This is the expertise of the Chief Connection Scientist.

My life mission is to spread the health benefits of human connection. I’m looking for allies.

RHR 160: Easing Employee's Transportation Barriers with Ryan McManus12 Jul 202300:33:26

Send us a text

About Ryan:  Hi and thanks for reading this 'about me'. I am a mobility entrepreneur and a few years ago I started SHARE Mobility to be a part of the transformation of the automotive industry into the mobility industry. I am very interested in autonomous vehicles and the connected car innovations that will create a future where everyone is a passenger. Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) is going to enable people to use multimodal transportation and mobility subscriptions will replace car ownership. My goal with SHARE Mobility is to get large organizations and cities to offer MaaS as a benefit.

I host a podcast about transportation called Commute. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJGh3av0JOnxupilM5g6pew

I write about transportation and mobility on Medium. www.medium.com/@rynmcmns

About Share Mobility:

The way you move determines the way you live. SHARE Mobility was founded to create a future where transportation is more sustainable and equitable. As the world evolves from motors to mobility, we are committed to making transportation that works for everyone - especially those who lack reliable transportation. We are not here to take your car. We exist to bring transportation to those that need it.

We develop technology and manage world-class mobility services to deliver the most efficient and sustainable mode of transportation. You can call it MaaS, microtransit, or mobility - just don’t call it ride-sharing.

It’s time to eliminate transportation as a barrier to employment and we are here to help your company with everything you need to provide commuter benefits.

RHR 158: Supporting "Messy Middle" Leaders with Betsy Kauffman28 Jun 202300:37:41

Send us a text

BETSY KAUFFMAN is a globally recognized Organizational Agility Coach with more than 20 years of experience working in Fortune 500 companies as well as the Founder, CEO, and Coach at Cross Impact, speaker, and mentor in the Charlotte Women in Business Mentoring Program. In addition to a Bachelor of Business Administration from James Madison University, she spent 20+ years working in corporate America trying to figure out how to balance motherhood, working full time, and climbing the corporate ladder in a competitive tech environment where women weren’t supportive of each other.

Experts point to a broken rung at the first step to manager level as holding women back. For every 100 men who are promoted from entry-level roles to manager positions, only 87 women are promoted. As a result, men significantly outnumber women at the manager level, and women can never catch up. There are simply too few women to promote to senior leadership positions because the best candidates are often held back at the stage she calls “the messy middle”. And the disparity is even more glaring in senior leadership where only one in four C-suite leaders is a woman.

Over the years, Betsy learned to find her voice and use it to positively support and influence colleagues, clients, and various companies. In 2014, Betsy started Cross Impact when she realized the organizational work she was doing and 1:1 leadership coaching were desperately needed in organizations worldwide.

RHR 155: A Cure for the Common Company with Dr. Richard Safeer07 Jun 202300:32:30

Send us a text

Research indicates less than 3% of Americans are sufficiently active, eat a healthy diet, maintain a healthy weight and abstain from smoking. A key factor in the ability to achieve one’s health goals is whether those goals are supported by the people they’re closest to—at home and at work. Generally, organizational employee wellness programs are only partially successful because they expect the individual to bear the full responsibility of changing their behavior rather than in conjunction with a supportive environment.

For the past 20 years, workplace health pioneer and thought leader Richard Safeer, M.D. has assessed cultures, trained leaders, and conducted research on the intersection of individual and organizational behavior. He currently serves as the Chief Medical Director of Employee Health and Well-Being for Johns Hopkins Medicine. He is a regular conference speaker on building a culture of health and well-being and has published numerous journal articles on the topic.  His full bio is below.

In his upcoming, groundbreaking book available on January 19, 2023, titled, A Cure for the Common Company: A Well-Being Prescription for a Happier, Healthier, and More Resilient Workforce (Wiley),Dr. Safeer becomes the first author to provide a step-by-step roadmap for creating a well-being culture that integrates science with practical solutions as demonstrated by the numerous real stories from successful companies.

RHR 153: The Future Workplace Experience with Kevin Mulcahy24 May 202300:40:54

Send us a text

During the pandemic many remote-working employees began slip-sliding away from their organizations’ mission, culture, and values.  They began losing their emotional connection to their work, their sense of purpose, and other aspects of the employee experience (EX) that are crucial to business success. The three most pressing disconnects that employers now struggle with are:

In 1999, she spearheaded the movement to institutionalize financial wellness programs in the workplace and has influenced legislation around requirements for financial professionals to ensure they work in the best interest of investors through the fiduciary standard.

Liz is the pioneer of the financial wellness movement and an advocate for the 99%. About Money Strong:

The book is an extension of our mission to bring unbiased financial wellness coaching to as many people as possible. Liz wrote it to distill the learnings from 23 years of running Financial Finesse, and working with passionate employers to positively impact millions of employees, into a digestible guide that is relatable and empowering for everyone, no matter where they are financially. It’s approachable, actionable, and motivating. We’ve been saying it reads like having a conversation with a trusted coach who’s got your back no matter what but also isn’t afraid to push you to achieve your goals.

Also, of note, the book is organized around Liz’s STARTTM framework which maps out five keys to success that anyone can employ to build the life they’ve always dreamed of:

  • Set Yourself up for Financial Success
  • Tackle Your Financial Stress
  • Attain the Life you Want
  • Role Model Positive Financial Habits and Behaviors
  • Thrive by Living your Purpose

Finally, half of the book’s proceeds will go towards supporting a new philanthropic initiative Financial Finesse is working on to deliver free financial education to college athletes who can now make money from their name, image, and likeness (NIL), but who currently lack the financial coaching needed to effectively manage this opportunity.

RHR 148: Communicate with Courage with Michelle Gladieux19 Apr 202300:34:02

Send us a text

About the author: Michelle Gladieux (Glad-ee-oh) is the author of Communicate with Courage: Taking Risks to Overcome the Four Hidden Challenges and President of Gladieux Consulting, a Midwest-based team known for top-notch design and presentation of seminars in communication and leadership topics around the U.S. She provides executive coaching and facilitates strategic planning for clients in diverse industries, in governments, at non-profits, and in academia. She has 18 years of collegiate teaching experience at three universities in her home state of Indiana, accepting her first adjunct faculty position at age 23. Her students (whether in introductory public speaking or graduate-level organizational psychology courses) benefitted from her deep commitment to helping others grow as communicators.

She's worked as a Corporate Human Resources and Training Director in the cold storage, robotics, and construction industries and enjoys visiting conferences as a keynote speaker and workshop presenter. She's served on several boards of directors including the National Public Radio affiliate in her hometown for more than a dozen years. Michelle has mentored thousands of people and her positive effect on those she advises is evident even after just one interaction. Her clients and friends are delighted that she's finally documented some of her best tips (AKA "Pro Moves") in Communicate with Courage

Raising our game as communicators is the best way to make a difference in our careers and relationships, but it takes courage to find our voice, open up, and invite others to open up to us. As a life-long communication coach and top gun in her field, Michelle has discovered four obstacles keeping us from becoming the best communicators we can be:

  • Hiding: Fear of exposing our supposed weaknesses
  • Defining: Putting too much stock into our assumptions, being quick to judge
  • Rationalizing: Leaning on pessimism to shield ourselves from taking chances, engaging in conflict, or doing other scary but potentially rewarding actions
  • Settling: Stopping at “good enough” instead of aiming for something better in interactions

RHR 147: FIRED Leadership with Paul McCarthy12 Apr 202300:50:02

Send us a text

About Paul:

My entire life changed after being fired from 4 executive leadership roles.

Fired for demonstrating the leadership qualities that I was hired for. Later this simple acronym would become the FIRED leadership framework and lead the way in regenerating the future of leadership.

F – Fresh Thinking
I – Inquisitive Nature
R – Real and Accountable
E – Expressive and Challenging
D – Direct and Transparent

In early 2017, after my 4th firing, I realized the current leadership model was broken. I had developed leaders for over 25 years, though the qualities I was hired for and later fired for were not present in the leadership development programs I was delivering to clients.

I then became curious if we were identifying, recruiting, onboarding, and developing leaders with the leadership qualities needed for the future. I reviewed hundreds of global leadership hiring processes, onboarding practices, and development programs which revealed we were not. I then asked the boldest question that no one wanted to ask.

Are organizations complicit in this hypocrisy?

I researched and shared my perspective on this question through writing, speaking, and meeting others who started asking similar questions.

Slowly and deeply more people began to listen.

My research (including feedback I received) reveals that organizations are proactively or passively developing and reinforcing organizational and leadership cultures of hypocrisy, systemic dysfunction, and toxicity. Organizations continue to normalize and incentivize this dysfunction, which leads to and results in a misaligned and broken leadership model.

I now serve as a dedicated guide to help Boards, CSuite, the HR Community (VP, Director, Business Partner), and Chief Disruption Officers reinvent and regenerate the future of leadership using an evidence-based, experiential and experimental approach.

Embracing Soulful Wellness: Transforming Corporate Culture with Pam Buchanan26 Feb 202500:34:32

Send us a text

Can nurturing the soul unlock higher productivity and satisfaction in the workplace? Join us in a thought-provoking conversation with Pam Buchanan, the visionary founder of Quantum Sense, who brings four decades of corporate wisdom to our discussion. Pam challenges the status quo by highlighting the often-neglected domain of soul health, urging organizations to see beyond conventional physical and mental wellness programs. By reimagining corporate culture to include an understanding of each individual's essence, businesses can foster environments where authenticity thrives, ultimately benefiting both employees and the organization.

Moving beyond theory, we explore the tangible impact of our sensory experiences on workplace wellness. Pam shares her insights into how attention to sensory inputs—colors, sounds, and surroundings—can transform our daily work environments. This sensory mindfulness can help shift employees from mere survival to truly thriving, enhancing engagement and fostering a culture that values curiosity and creativity. By embracing these principles, leaders can create spaces that resonate with employees, improving overall satisfaction and success.

As acceptance of holistic well-being grows, we delve into innovative wellness solutions that incorporate soul health into the workspace. RHR 144: Resumes that Work with Doug Levin22 Mar 202300:32:25

Send us a text

Join Kyle Roed as he discusses with Doug Levin how to cultivate a resume and job search that works!

About Doug:
As the Owner of JobStars USA LLC, my daily commitment is ensuring the delivery of top notch career services.

I run the day-to-day operations and serve as the lead resume writing practitioner. This means empathizing with clients, stepping into their shoes, and leading the process of developing ATS-friendly documents that communicate context, highlight achievements, and provide an accurate portrayal.

HOW I GOT HERE

In 2011, after nearly seven years working in the corporate world and earning an MBA in Marketing, I chose to quit my comfortable job and venture into the unknown. All I knew is that I had an entrepreneurial itch to scratch.

It took blind courage to leave my job and I didn’t have a plan when I made the leap. So, I needed a way to make ends meet. That’s when I started working as a freelance Resume Writer. Day after day (with rare exceptions), I worked on new Resume projects. In total, amassing 10,000+ hours of experience as a Resume Writer by continuously shaping, mastering, and refining my skills over 10+ years.

Concurrently, I started building my business (JobStars USA LLC). This involved developing an e-commerce website, establishing a menu of services, creating processes to serve multiple clients simultaneously, as well as managing all the other aspects of running a business.

Nowadays, I am living my dreams as a small business owner. Thank you JobStars clients!

RHR 143: GOLDEN: The Power of Silence in a World of Noise with Leigh Marz14 Mar 202300:33:31

Send us a text

Silence isn’t just the absence of noise. It’s a presence that brings us energy, clarity, and deeper connection.

Justin Zorn and Leigh Marz take us on an unlikely journey—from the West Wing of the White House to San Quentin’s death row; from Ivy League brain research laboratories to underground psychedelic circles; from the temperate rainforests of Olympic National Park to the main stage at a heavy metal festival—to explore the meaning of silence and the art of finding it in any situation.

Golden reveals how to go beyond the ordinary rules and tools of mindfulness. It’s a field guide for navigating the noise of the modern world—not just the noise in our ears but also on our screens and in our heads. Drawing on lessons from neuroscience, business, spirituality, politics, and the arts, Marz and Zorn explore why auditory, informational, and internal silence is essential for physical health, mental clarity, ecological sustainability, and vibrant community.

With vital lessons for individuals, families, workplaces, and whole societies, Golden is an engaging and unexpected rethinking of the meaning of quiet. Marz and Zorn make the bold and convincing argument that we can repair our world by reclaiming the presence of silence in our lives.

We discuss:

  • The economics and psychology of why there's so much noise today—in our ears, on our screens, and in our heads
  • The neuroscience of why silence is essential for our bodies and minds
  • New and accessible approaches to getting beyond the auditory, informational, and internal noise of the modern world, as well as finding deeper immersion in silence
  • How to honor silence in workplaces
  • Building a society that honors silence—including the transformation of the attention economy.

RHR 142: I Wish I'd Known This: 6 Career-Accelerating Secrets for Women Leaders with Brenda Wensil and Kathryn Heath08 Mar 202300:38:20

Send us a text

I Wish I’d Known This: 6 Career-Accelerating Secrets for Women Leaders (Berrett-Koehler) is a roadmap for success to guide any and every woman on her career journey. Whether a seasoned veteran who is feeling “stuck,” or a graduate just stepping into the workforce, this comprehensive resource is packed with compelling stories and tried-and-true strategies that provide women with the skill set to accelerate through obstacles along their leadership paths. In this indispensable guide, authors and executive coaches Brenda Wensil and Kathryn Heath of executive coaching firm Bravanti (formerly with Flynn Heath Holt) leverage their decades of
experience to provide a comprehensive accounting of the six blind spots that derail women’s careers and the strategies that set them on the path for an impactful, sustainable career.

These seasoned leadership experts have spent decades coaching more than 800 women and working with women executives, middle managers, and professionals across industries and age groups. Through their coaching, assessments, leadership and organizational development work at Bravanti, Brenda and Kathryn have amassed a treasure trove of data and case studies that have informed their keen insights into what works for women’s career advancement and the forces that delay or destroy it. Coupled with the data gleaned from coaching hundreds of women and responses from 4,000, 360-degree interviews, these renowned leadership experts have become
the go-to experts for executive coaching, especially for women, both in the US and abroad.

The authors emphasize the professional blind spots that women are prone to missing. These obstacles, they point out, can minimize career potential, impact, and advancement. The result is that some women end up drifting instead of driving through their careers, going it alone instead of building a posse, and leaving their “reputationality” (that special something we are known for) to chance.

In I Wish I’d Known This, Brenda and Kathryn outline six challenges women commonly face on their professional journeys and map a way to accelerate through them for higher-impact careers.

Readers will learn how to:
• Set a vision, strategy, and plan for their careers
• Learn who they are, what they offer, and how to tell their stories
• Seek and act on feedback to guide their paths
• Prepare and practice for the best outcomes
• Enlist help and support from others

Effective women leaders inspire innovation, sustain profitability, manage risk, and create environments for inclusion and diversity to increase. Chock full of strategies, stories, and practical skills, this book will hasten a woman's progress and impact as a professional woman and liberate her to excel in her career on her own terms.

RHR 141: Build Trust with Tech with Aaron Painter 01 Mar 202300:35:14

Send us a text

With remote work on the rise, the trend of fully remote interview processes are also becoming the norm. However both leave large swaths of companies– from HR teams and managers to IT officials – at risk of fraud. From FBI warnings of criminals using deepfake videos to interview, to remote hiring processes leaving opening to all sorts of forms of extreme dishonesty, there is a real need to know who’s really behind the other side of the screen. After all, the downside to remote hiring means that you may never interact with the coworkers you hire.

Aaron Painter is at the forefront of addressing this very issue, having seen employee fraud cases lek this firsthand. A former VP and General Manager at Microsoft, Aaron is now CEO of Nametag, a leader in Digital ID verification.

We discuss:

The ways criminals steal their “new employer’s” intellectual property and vanish without ever being identified by HR

Ways that HR team can verify every applicant they screen and deter fraudsters that might try to slip by without being identified

How to tie digital candidate profiles and applications to real people

His experiences helping HR teams close security gaps in their hiring process and get more visibility into their candidates

RHR 140: Recognition that Works with Tom Short 22 Feb 202300:38:17

Send us a text

Kudos’ Chief Customer Officer Tom Short is an employees-first entrepreneur. In the last 25 years, he has founded several successful companies, all of which have employee experience as their cornerstone. In his current role, he is invested in advocating for employee recognition over rewards — favoring the long term effects of recognition on well-being and motivation over the short term “object perks” of rewards.

Tom Short is the Founder of Kudos Inc., where he oversees business development, sales and marketing. Tom has founded numerous, highly successful, companies including Idea Machine, which was recognized as one of the top ten interactive agencies in Canada, which he later merged with Rare Method to create the largest independent interactive agency in Western Canada. Under Tom’s direction Rare Method was ranked as one of the fastest growing organizations in the Canada by Profit 100 Magazine several years running and as one of the top 50 small to mid-sized employers in Canada by the Queen's School of Business, Queen’s Centre for Business Venturing and Hewitt Associates.

At each organization Tom built, employee engagement was front and center as the key to building effective teams and successful companies. Kudos was the direct result of this philosophy and was a systematic way to build a systemic culture of appreciation. Today Kudos is quickly becoming a leader in social recognition and changing how companies around the world engage their team’s – one thank you at a time!

RHR 137: Unstoppable Leadership with Alden Mills01 Feb 202300:41:42

Send us a text

About Alden

Hi, I’m Alden Mills

I’m going to be your swim buddy—Navy SEAL speak for your teammate. I’m here to help you succeed. There is no greater pleasure that I get than from helping others, their teams, and organizations go beyond what they originally thought was possible.

With over 40 years of success in different environments—sports, military, business, nonprofits, and community action groups—I know the rules for success are universal.

It starts with how you lead yourself and ends with how you serve others.

Principles of Success

These principles of success are what I call the three levels of Unstoppable Leadership. Think of them like ripples radiating from a pebble dropped into a pond’s still waters.

The techniques I share are ones I’ve used throughout my life—from leading Navy SEALs to creating an Inc. 500 company to leading communities to, and most importantly, raising my four boys.

In our latest Rebel HR Podcast episode, we promise you'll learn how to transition from the outdated command and control model to a leadership style that fosters trust, inspiration, and unprecedented employee potential. Covey’s transformative model is perfectly suited for today’s rapidly evolving work environment, driven by technological advancements and the diverse expectations of newer generations.

By focusing on three key leadership responsibilities—modeling, trusting, and inspiring—leaders can create high-trust cultures that drive productivity, creativity, and overall well-being. These stories show that by empowering your team, you unlock untapped talents and drive genuine success within your organization.

As we challenge the persistent dominance of command and control, we aim to inspire HR professionals to rebel against outdated paradigms and champion trust and inspiration as new leadership standards. The episode explores the nuances between motivation and inspiration, emphasizing the importance of fostering internal inspiration to boost productivity and creativity. Join us to explore how HR can serve as a catalyst for positive change by integrating trust-based leadership into your day-to-day operations, paving the way for a future defined by empowered and inspired teams.

RHR 135: From Conflict to Courage with Marlene Chism 18 Jan 202300:36:09

Send us a text

Unresolved workplace conflict wastes time, increases stress, and negatively affects business outcomes. But, Marlene Chism writes, conflict isn’t the problem—mismanagement is. The author, advisor, speaker, coach, and CEO of Marlene Chism Consulting’s new book From Conflict to Courage: How to Stop Avoiding and Start Leading  details how the “three A’s”—aggression, avoidance, and appeasing—are common yet destructive ways humans avoid the emotions triggered by conflict.

Chism’s book provides exercises, examples, and expert guidance to foster “conflict capacity,” stop workplace drama, and deal fearlessly with difficult issues head-on. Her techniques show leaders how to increase leadership clarity, identify obstacles, and reduce resistance to conflict.

When leaders see conflict as a teacher, courageously face it, and continually work on transforming themselves, Chism says, they can get the resolution they are seeking and can change minds.

About Marlene

From Conflict to Courage is Marlene Chism’s fourth leadership book; see her other works here.

She is a seasoned speaker, thought partner, advisor, coach, author, and widely recognized as the leading US authority on stopping workplace drama. She is CEO of Marlene Chism Consulting, which offers a comprehensive suite of consulting services to businesses and leaders. Marlene has a bachelor's degree in communications from Drury University, and a master’s in human resources development from Webster University.  She is an advanced practitioner in Narrative coaching. I started SSR because it’s getting harder to find and implement the right software. Plus, most of the advice online is very biased or too theoretical.

Personal Power: Navigating Influence and Authenticity with Chris Lipp12 Feb 202500:36:48

Send us a text

What happens when personal power is mistaken for mere likability? Chris Lipp, professor at Tulane University and author of "The Science of Personal Power," joins us to unmask the illusions surrounding personal power and its true essence. Through engaging conversation, Chris reveals his transition from studying persuasion to dissecting the power dynamics that shape our interactions. We explore how real personal power can uplift rather than overshadow others, using historical figures like George Washington as exemplars of how formidable leaders enhance those around them.

Chris challenges the conventional wisdom linking niceness with respect, drawing a distinction between superficial charm and authentic self-worth. With references to cultural stories like "The Wizard of Oz," we unravel how deceptive appearances can be. The dialogue delves into the importance of setting boundaries, moving beyond mere affirmations to establish respect and fortify relationships. This episode is an invitation to redefine your understanding of influence by fostering self-respect and mastering the behaviors that underpin genuine power.

Discover the profound connection between mindset, values, and success as we outline the themes of Chris's latest book. By aligning actions with personal values, one can significantly boost confidence and efficacy, particularly in high-pressure situations. Chris shares insights into workplace courage, illustrating that taking ownership, even amid failure, can earn respect and lead to career advancement. Encouraging leaders to question whether their teams are metaphorically getting "frostbite," we underscore the necessity of facing fears to make impactful decisions. Engage with us for a deeper insight into personal power and connect through social media for more riveting discussions.
