The Impact of Storytelling with Colette McBeth
Épisode 137
lundi 30 décembre 2024 • Durée 50:11
Welcome to a very special Real You Real Money episode series! To kick off 2025, I wanted to gift you a handful of episodes to combat the negative chatter that can run wild in the online space. Those voices that say things like ‘nothing worked in 2024, the algorithm is against you, the game has changed and left you behind’. Sound familiar?
All of those generalisations can make you feel like giving up and keep you from reaching for your goals… and while people say these things like they’re universal truths, the secret is that they are absolutely NOT!
During this series, I’ve invited 5 different guests who absolutely smashed it in 2024 to talk through how they did it. We dive deep into their unique stories and break down how they shifted away from those beliefs and toward a business that worked for them.
In the first episode of the series, I welcome the brilliant Colette McBeth to the podcast. Colette shares her journey from being a Television Correspondent for the BBC to a prolific author and coach who helps business owners use storytelling not just within their marketing, but throughout every aspect of their work.
The usefulness of storytelling doesn’t end with how you speak to your audience; Colette shares how the stories we tell ourselves can have a huge impact on how we set goals and define our self-worth. Tune in for tips on how to connect deeply with your audience AND your own desires!

Ready for a Midlife Career Change? with Josh Peck
Épisode 136
jeudi 7 novembre 2024 • Durée 42:42
My guest today is the wonderful Josh Peck! This is the first time I’ve had the chance to chat with Josh, a midlife career change coach who helps mid to senior level professionals find more fulfilment in their careers without sacrificing salary.
Josh and I dive deep into why so many people seek career changes in their 40s, plus what that process looks like practically, the challenges of finding a new balance, and the fulfilment that waits on the other side. We break down common pitfalls, like the pressure to stick to an 8 hour workday, how to avoid becoming your own toxic boss, and challenging the idea that a career change means starting completely from scratch (hint: it doesn’t!).
Tune in for insights on how to balance what you want in life with what you want from your career, and of course the money side of it all.

QUOTE
“If you want a career change, it's because your job's here and you're way over there and there's this gulf between them. If you want to realign who you are with what you do, you've got to be really bloody clear about who you are at this point in your life. Because we change so much and no one teaches us stuff, most just aren't that clear unless you've done a fair amount of work on who you are.”
“Money’s not bad, its neutral. What you choose to do with it is what YOU choose to do.”
“What we learn when we're really small is that all of our worth and our value comes from doing rather than just being. Is it any wonder that we get absolutely addicted to working, working, working? If we're not working, then what value do we think that we have?
Calling all neurodivergent business owners! with Claire Paniccia
Épisode 127
vendredi 12 juillet 2024 • Durée 49:36
My guest today is Claire Paniccia, a brilliant business coach helping neurodivergent, spoonie, and creative rebel online entrepreneurs figure out how to do business (and make money) in ways that work for THEM.

Tune in for insight on how running your own business can expand your earning potential, how to get your business to work for you, plus some really helpful tips on how to balance fluctuating energy levels with income consistency.
On Jul 22nd - Jul 25th, Claire is hosting a free 4-day online event to help you toss out the “rules” and build your online business to work for YOUR unique brain.

QUOTES
“What was a successful, functional, proven path for someone else might not be a successful path for you. Let's say they had really good hiking shoes, and you have flip flops for the brain. Your flip flop brain is not going to do well on the hiking path that they used cleats on.”
“I love an unregulated industry because there's so much opportunity without gatekeeping. But a flip side of that coin is that there are gross opportunists. It’s kind of baby with the bathwater.”
Money Does Not Demand your Perfection
Épisode 37
mardi 2 novembre 2021 • Durée 19:02
Money Does Not Demand your Perfection. It never has.
I said these words in an Instagram post a little while back, and ever since it’s been one of my favourite topics.
In this episode, I’m going to dive in again, and talk about exactly what this means. We’re going to talk about how we’ve personified money as this entity you can never be good enough for, never work enough for, never reach high enough expectations for. If this sounds familiar, here’s your reminder: money is not a person! Society is the thing that is demanding your perfection, and it’s up to us to challenge this as the real humans that we are - flaws, strengths, and everything on the table.
Listen to the episode to hear me chat about how to do this, and why the typical idea of professionalism is the idea of what is professional is largely racist, sexist, homophobic, ageist, ableist, fatphobic bullshit. You can make money with ease exactly as you are, right now.

QUOTES
“We have muddled up society deeming us worthy with us BEING worthy, both from a kind of more existential, ‘what am I worth as a human’, but also from an absolute self-worth place. And then in turn… we've muddled that up with us deserving or being given permission to make money.”
“I think it's professional to be polite and kind - that doesn't mean unboundaried. I think it's professional to deliver on what you said you would deliver. I think it's professional to speak to people with respect. You can do that with your hair looking anyway, you can do that in any accent, in any body.”
“If you're feeling pressure and if you're thinking, ‘I don't quite fit into this’, there are loads of ideal clients also feeling that way. And if you can present them with something else, they will flock to you.”
“Changing how we feel about money demands our imperfection.”
2021 has been hard... and here‘s what to do about it
Épisode 36
mardi 19 octobre 2021 • Durée 23:23
I’ve been thinking about the beginning of the pandemic a lot, and what it meant to businesses like mine. There was a sense that navigating 2020 would mean ‘something’. Something uniquely special to small businesses, to limited companies, to sole-traders and anyone navigating this new territory with only a small team by their side… and in some cases, even alone. If I could successfully survive, it would be ‘something’ to tell.
At the time, there wasn’t much (if any) support for limited companies from the government. Yes there was a lot of fear, but there was also a push to dig deep, of necessity and of having to make this work.
Surprisingly, I know a lot of businesses that, at the end of the day, had one of their best years in 2020. Which brings us to now.
All the sudden, it seems the exhaustion has set in. The tedium of scrolling endlessly. Of feeding this digital machine. Of wanting genuine connection yet being uncertain what that means for you in a world of screens. If you’re feeling this, you can be sure that your clients are too.
During this episode, I lean into this feeling that so many of us are experiencing, and look at how you can work with it to keep growing, selling, and connecting. Now isn’t the time to run from your business or feelings— the exact opposite. Now is the time to reflect, take a deep breath, and keep communicating and learning.

QUOTES
‘We tend to be like, oh, I'm done with online. People don't seem to be interacting with me the same online. If you’re feeling done online, if you're feeling exhausted by all of this, that's how your clients are going to be feeling too.’
‘Have a think about reflecting on what's gone on. What's worked? What's not worked? What are you no longer doing that you used to love? Because I think one of the things about 2021 is we have gone into… survival.’
‘We've gone into this kind of… no person's land of ‘what's happening’. We've gone from having this sense that we were all in it together to ‘it's everyone out for themselves.’
‘There's a third way to regulate our nervous system. And it's a newer way. And that is connection. It's to reach out to people. It's what happens when you are feeling scared and you hug someone. And you take a deep breath’
‘Sometimes our feelings are big and we need to sort of gently nudge them out. That's okay. But to retreat at this moment, when there feels like there's a shift happening, when it feels like there is an opportunity to show up as who you are to be really truthful in your message to speak to your people… what I really want you all to know is that this is not a time to hide. This is not a time…to make this all about you and to run away. This is a time to really step up. It doesn't mean you can't balance that…with rest and looking after yourself.’
Mythbusting Self-care with Mara Glatzel
Épisode 35
mardi 12 octobre 2021 • Durée 53:51
When it comes to talking about self-care, it’s easy to get lost in the buzzword that it’s become. That’s why I loved chatting with Mara Glatzel, who is an intuitive coach and writer.
During this episode, we demystify self-care, moving past the bubble baths and scented candles and one fits all solutions that oversimplify the term, and look at how you can actually reclaim space for your needs (nothing against bubble baths, of course).
We get into the nuance of the self-care discussion, like the dynamics of privilege within common ideas of self-care and the accessible ways that you can invest in ‘working on yourself instead of against yourself’, as Mara says, including everywhere from free resources to courses and coaching.
We also talk about the very concrete ways self-care can improve your business and moneymaking, even if it may seem like an intangible thing.
Mara breaks down the difference between ‘consistent self-care’ and ‘emergency self-care’, and why it’s important to build a relationship with yourself just like you would any other relationship in your life.
As you can see from the piles of quotes below, this is one you don’t want to miss!
About Mara
Mara is an intuitive coach, writer, and Needy podcast host. She describes herself as ‘a queer, femme wife and mother of two, recovering control freak, and a human who deeply understands the impulse to relegate her needs to the bottom of a very long to-do list in an attempt to prove her worth.’
Mara creates courses and circles that help you tend to your own self-care, ignite your courage, and connect you with a community grounded in the belief that each one of us is deserving of deep nourishment. Mara’s work does away with the one size fits all ‘self-care’ that continually misses the mark, and shows you how to rebuild the chasm in your relationship with yourself so that you can feel seen, heard, and adored, no matter what.

QUOTES
‘I started with five minutes, you know. I started taking care of myself as an extremely burnt-out person who really had no choice but figure out a different way.’
‘It's knowing yourself and caring for yourself in whatever way is doable for you. Really, it's about clearing out whatever is standing between you and knowing that you matter, and that you're allowed to have access to your own precious resources.’
‘I really like talking about money. Thinking about energy as a currency, especially for entrepreneurs. And you know, how we like… overdraw our bank accounts. The first time you overdraw, it's like a £30 fine, fine. But you continue to overdraft, continue to overdraw. It becomes this enormous financial emergency. And we do this with ourselves energetically, and it's really tricky because we can do it for a short period of time.’
‘You know, I think for a lot of entrepreneurs particularly, we get stuck in this cycle of… going all in to this hustle and grind for a launch or something like that. Doing way more than we possibly can. And then having to spend time recouping that energy that we expended only to do it again. And so, we get on that swinging pendulum of everything, to nothing, everything, to nothing and beyond.’
Part of it is really honouring your own needs as important in your business. It's not just having a certain model or having a certain amount of followers or having, you know, making a certain amount of money or whatever. It's like, my experience of this matters too.
‘The reality is that all of these quick fixes and 10 step plans and the things that we want, right- we want it to be easy. Or at least easier. They don't work, because what works is just being by your
The One Where Ray gets Interviewed
Épisode 34
lundi 20 septembre 2021 • Durée 48:31
This week, the tables are turned! In this episode, we switch it up and Jo Casey interviews me about everything that led up to me becoming a money coach and mentor, and everything that’s happened since.
We talk about how making 94k in the first year of my business wasn’t necessarily the relief it seemed it would be, and the unexpectedly scary and intimidating things that can come with reaching financial milestones, especially when they happen so quickly (yes, it’s possible for your diamond shoes to be too tight!)
I talk about trying to come back from a bad experience in my second year of business, and the different things that you can do to build yourself up after you’ve been knocked down.
We talk therapy, coaching, and how you can still be struggling and working through things while earning- the two aren’t exclusive! There are things that you can consciously do to make that shift from having a business that requires your perfection (nope), to having a business that works with you, your growth and ambitions (that’s more like it).
If this sounds like something you’re interested in, be sure to check out my new program Plenty More! ‘But a lot of my panic, a lot of my fear. A lot of the kind of emotional rollercoaster of like, of how I'd got to that 94k, was like: I can do this. I can do this. Oh my God. I don't think I can do this. I don't think I'm doing this. Or, oh my God. I need to hide in my bed and watch Grey's Anatomy because I’m terrified. Like that was kind of the three, like…the Bermuda triangle of emotion that I like swung around.’
‘I kept trying, I think it was like nine months to a year, I kept trying to fix myself and kept going for these quick fixes, like a short session with a hypnotherapist or a one-off session with a coach on something. And I just couldn't, it just wouldn't work.’
‘So even when we're in that high place where we’re like, ‘I'm feeling really excited, therefore none of the other stuff exists.’ I just squash it down and squash it down, squash it down, and then you can’t. You cannot squash stuff like that down. It's not how we work as humans. And so it just boils up and you're suddenly like, oh God, it's like utterly overwhelming.’
‘But there is that feeling of like, I've got wages to pay. I have always been the breadwinner in the family - I've got to support. If I don't make money. What do I do? And there's so much pressure, which is not the best thing when you're not feeling, you know, when you're feeling anxious or you've had your trauma poked at.’
‘It doesn't feel trustworthy. I think when I made that money fast. It felt very much like I'd been chucked up in the air and left. Then I was a bit like, what? Where am I? What's happening? I don't know. I didn't get here gently. It's why we should be much more positive about slow growth’

“Think about what your clients want and stay out of their pockets and their diaries and their holiday plans and their rest plans and how much time they should spend with their kids.”
“Don't be afraid to gamify it. In fact, do it. Money doesn't need to be treated so heavily and seriously all the time. In fact, it loves not to be. So how can you make it lighter?”

“None of my clients are getting the photos taken because they want to promote how they look. It's because they want to promote how they work, what they do, how they can help you. The body that they are in is important…and irrelevant.”
“In being the real you, people will be attracted to you. If you’re actively trying to blend in with all the other coaches, you just become one of a crowd. That's the countercultural aspect of showing up in front of the camera as yourself.”

"I didn't realise just how much that was passed down, I didn't realise it massively impacts how I live my entire life, in the fear that money could just disappear at any moment in time."
"It felt like one of my deepest, darkest secrets. How dare I admit that I not only want to earn money, but I think I can and maybe should earn money. "
"The whole point of this community is that...we are forming a resistance almost. We are here to support each other, but also to help each other to fight back."
