This week we have a masterclass on digestion in our Foundations Series.

The digestive system plays a major role in your overall health as it brings nutrients to your body. Without good digestive health, you will experience a host of uncomfortable symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, indigestion, and more. Additionally, you may also get a lack of proper nutrition from the food you eat, which can negatively impact your health and wellbeing. This is why digestive health is so important.

So, how do you keep your digestive system healthy? Listen to find out!

Lymphatic Massage for Health & Detox with Dayna Marsh19 Dec 202200:42:36

Show your lymph some love! Dayna Marsh joins the show today to talk about the benefits of lymphatic massage. Dayna is a Licensed Massage Therapist, Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, and owner of Body Therapy Salt Lake, in Salt Lake City, UT. She offers in person massage therapy sessions and in person or virtual nutritional therapy services.

Lymph, is like blood in that they both are liquids circulating in the body. Unlike red blood's circular, pumped by the heart movement, lymph moves just one way: out. However, lymph has no organ pump so it's up to individuals to help move it along.

Lymph is the body's liquid trash can. It picks up waste products formed from all the chemical reactions needed to keep people alive, ushering them out of the body.

Besides the congested head, puffy eyes, and swollen ankles that signal lymphatic dysfunction, there are more signs and symptoms of lymph blockages that may not be as obvious as fluid buildup. However, they can be severe lymph-related issues just the same. These signs include:

  • Bloated stomach or extremities
  • Brain fog
  • Cellulite
  • Chronic headaches
  • Chronic sinus infections
  • Constipation
  • Eczema
  • Excessive sweating
  • Mucus and phlegm production
  • Painful and hard swellings (especially in armpits, groin area, and neck)
  • Sluggishness
  • Stiff or painful joints

Key takeaway from this episode: If you have one or more of these signs of lymphatic blockage, you can't eliminate toxins, and you'd benefit from supporting your lymphatic system with massage and a variety of other techniques.

Misinformation vs. the Truth: What Every Parent Needs to Know with Dr. Peter McCullough17 Oct 202200:57:48

Dr. Peter McCullough is a practicing cardiologist with over 30 years of medical experience. He is a clinical scholar, frequent news contributor, AND, as a leading expert on cardiovascular medicine, Dr. McCullough has been outspoken, sounding alarm bells about the heart-related risks he believes could be attributed to mRNA technology, including myocarditis and adverse reactions in high endurance athletes.

There are many questions parents have, that are going unanswered or with answers that can feel like gaslighting. Dr. McCullough holds nothing back in this interview as we have a truly bold conversation about topics that are being aggressively censored from the internet.

Holly Jean and John discuss the latest controversy over Cosmopolitan magazine and the cover photo featuring obese women with the caption "this is healthy". The magazine has come under criticism, being accused of glamorizing obesity, for being irresponsible for displaying obesity as the picture of health during a time where a global pandemic is disproportionately affecting people with obesity and metabolic disorders more adversely. Then there is an outrage in response to the criticism from the body positivity and the body love movement. Holly Jean and Jonathan discuss the valid opinions and arguments on both sides of these discussions and how conversation is opening a lot of doors to understanding and dissecting a complicated topic.

Jonathan shares his proven success formula he uses to help clients:

The ROAD method

R – Remove O – Observe A – Action D – Discipline

402: Discover Your Unique Blood Sugar Patterns to Optimize Health with Continual Glucose Monitoring07 Dec 202000:55:47

Welcome to Low Carb Conversations with Leah Williamson, Holly Jean Barrett and Amber Horn, Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioners.

Carlee Hayes is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and the Lead Dietitian at NutriSense, a company that leverages continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) technology and data to prevent disease and improve health span. With an extensive background in nutrition counseling, weight management, and metabolic health, Carlee is on a mission to stop preventable disease and help people live their healthiest lives.

Conversations around blood sugar dysregulation and blood sugar balancing are important because blood sugar affects all aspects of human physiology. Inflammation and disrupted hormones caused by high blood sugar directly contribute to specific diseases and conditions, including diabetes, PCOS, leaky gut, heart disease, Alzheimer's, and even cancer.

What factors are most important in weight loss – calorie restriction or blood sugar regulation?

In this episode we explore that question with with Carlee. We also acknowledge that there is shift happening in health and nutrition, towards a more functional, bio-individual approach and how only YOUR body can tell you what is best for YOUR health. Using a CGM is one way to give yourself health clarity in health, removing some of the guess work that comes with lack of data.

If you've ever wondered, how many carbs can YOUR body handle eating before spiking blood glucose? How your workouts impact your blood sugar? Your blood sugar patterns during fasting windows? A CGM can provide you with the data to answer those questions.

When you sign up with Nutrisense, all plans include complimentary dietitian support. Data can be tricky so the Nutrisense dietitians are trained to work with you to help you understand the results. No matter with dietary lifestyle you follow, a CGM can help you meet your health goals with real time, real life DATA support.

Welcome to Low Carb Conversations with Leah Williamson, Holly Jean Barrett and Amber Horn, Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioners.

This week on the Podcast, Leah and Amber chat with Marty Kendall from Optimising Nutrition. If you are a long time listener then you will recognize Marty's name as he has been on the podcast a few times – even as a Co-Host!

Marty discusses his new project: Data-Driven Fasting. DDF revolves around the concept of using your Blood Glucose as a fuel gauge. You just wait until your Blood Glucose level is below your personalised trigger so you know you actually need to refuel. As you chase a lower pre-meal blood sugar trigger, the fat loss follows.

  • Join DDF to receive a 145-page manual and baselining sheet.
  • The next challenge starts November 21, 2020 or  January 2,  2021.

Marty has a new book called Big Fat Keto Lies  which is a compilation of his learnings from his adventures in low carb and keto land.  Designed to help people who might have stalled on their journey, Marty busts some lies in the Keto world by explaining common misconceptions like why eating too fat much might not be a good thing.

In this episode we look at two lies:

  •  #7 Fasting for longer is better
  •  #9 Calories Don't count

Is fasting for longer hours better for you? Do you think Calories don't count? Tune in to hear this and more.

Medical Hypnosis for Health Habit Breakthroughs with Dr. Lucy Burns10 Oct 202200:37:20

Our guest today is Dr. Lucy Burns. Dr. Lucy  is a GP and a lifestyle medicine physician. And has a an online platform, program called Real life Medicine  and a podcast called The Real Health and Weight Loss podcast with her business partner Dr. Mary Barson.

Medical hypnosis can be an effective clinical tool for the relief of physical symptoms. Hypnosis is a voluntary, generally safe, and potentially effective process that involves a person and a therapist working together to bring about positive changes.

Practitioners may be able to use hypnosis to help people bring about both psychological and physiological change in three main ways:

  • using mental imagery to help a person visualize themselves accomplishing their goals
  • presenting ideas or suggestions that are compatible with what a person desires
  • unconscious exploring to identify whether past events or experiences are causing a personal problem in making positive changes
  • Individuals can also learn the technique of self-hypnosis as self-hypnosis is similar to mindfulness techniques and meditation.

396: Self-care not working? Perhaps it's time to redefine. Co-host Catch Up Episode26 Oct 202000:34:01

Welcome to Low Carb Conversations with Leah Williamson, Holly Jean Barrett and Amber Horn, Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioners.

On this episode Leah, Holly Jean, and Amber catch up and recap the amazing guests we've had on over the last month.

Then the discussion shifts to the importance of self care and what it means to them. Self-care is a popular buzz word, but what do people really think when they think of taking time for self-care. Or, perhaps a better question is, how many people make an effort to actually prioritize self-care?

On this episode our hosts explore the expectations and realities of what self-care looks like. They also share their personal tips for self care. Here is a hint: Self-care is not just an act of luxury, taking bubble baths, or pampering yourself.  Tune in to find out how to find rest and restoration in daily activities and practices – no day spa necessary.

Articles Discussed:

  • Why your self-care isn't working
    • "Self-care is just one fraction of the broader concept of self-love. Self-love includes, but is not limited to, recognizing your self-worth, being kind toward yourself, and fostering your self-growth throughout the course of your life. If your self-care strategies are not sticking, it may be because you are lacking the foundation of self-love."
  • It's time to redefine self-care
    • "Self-care is anything your future self will thank your present self for doing"

Ready to show yourself some self-love this fall? Join Holly Jean in her annual group cleanse, REVIVE: GI Reset.

The Fall 2020 GI-RESET is perfectly timed to support the circadian rhythms of your body and the naturally occurring processes of seasonal detoxification.

The REVIVE GI Reset program runs from Monday November 2 – Monday November 23. The focus is on gut healing and supporting seasonal detoxification.

This is the SELF Care RESET!

With the option to choose from different levels of participation, this is an accessible, online program designed to benefit anyone looking to make time for self-care, get back on track with nutrition, kick cravings, reduce inflammation, and provide an opportunity to revive and repair their bodies from the inside out.

How to Protect Children from Sexual Abuse and Grooming, with Feather Berkower03 Oct 202200:30:26

Our guest today is Feather Berkower, a licensed clinical social worker with a Master's of Social Welfare from UC Berkeley. She has been a leader in child sexual abuse prevention since 1985 and has educated nearly one-hundred fifty thousand schoolchildren, parents and youth professionals. Her well-regarded workshop, Parenting Safe Children, empowers adults to keep children safe from sexual assault. Feather co-authored Off Limits, a parenting book that will change the way you think about keeping children safe. It is available on her website at parentingsafechildren.com

Sexual abuse of children is a difficult topic to discuss, but that is why these conversations need to take place. The manipulative behaviors perpetrators use to set children up for sexual abuse are designed to be subtle and often appear innocent. As parents, nothing is more important than the health and safety of our children. What we, many parents, don't know or realize, is that in these unsettling situations, the perpetrators are also working the parents. Abusers will often groom a family, and not just a child.

Doug shares his thoughts on mono crops such as corn, wheat and soy and their impact on our health and the economy. We love his philosophy on getting back to nature and eating real food. So many people are disconnected from where their food comes from these days and Doug wants people to start connecting back to the source, read labels, and empower yourself with knowledge! Next we look at the Neanderthal diet – is this closely related to the Carnivore diet of today before finishing up with a new plant based protein- fermented wood. Would you drink a fermented wood protein shake?

Light Therapy for Detoxification, Anti-Aging, & Stem Cell Regeneration with Dr. Caroline Williams26 Sep 202200:37:12

Welcome to Real Health Conversations with Leah Williamson and Holly Jean Mullen, Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioners.

This week on the Real Health Conversations Podcast Holly chats with guest Dr. Caroline of Native Sun Nutrition & Functional Medicine Center

Dr. Caroline Williams is a Chiropractic Physician and owner of Native Sun Nutrition & Functional Medicine Center in Las Vegas.  Since 2001 she has been working with patients holistically to determine the cause of dysfunction whether it be physical, mental, emotional, or chemical.

Unlike supplements, photo-biomodulation (PBM), also known as phototherapy, helps the body repair cells and tissue by using a light source of a specific wavelength. This type of therapy has excellent efficacy in wound healing and pain relief. Dr. Caroline and I specifically talk about stem cells and glutathione in terms of light therapy. We talk about, how in our increasingly toxic world, it is vital to our health to ensure our bodies are properly detoxing. Glutathione is the body's master antioxidant and primary antioxidant for detoxification. Stem cells can help to lower inflammation, regulate the immune system, and regenerate damaged or diseased tissue in your body. By allowing tissue repair and reduced inflammation, stem cell therapy can help patients to live a healthier and better quality of life.

There are so many adjustments you can make to find something that works for you. The following week we had Dr. Eva Detko on talking about our vagus nerve and how important it is for self regulating, immune function, digestion, and overall health and well-being. 377: Abel James opens up about his new projects, personal freedom, division tactics, and the power found in individual health.15 Jun 202001:03:02

Our guest today is Abel James – New York Times Bestselling Author, Musician, and Online Creator and the man behind the Wild Diet. He's host of the award-winning Fat-Burning Man Show, rated as Apple's #1 Health Podcast in 8 countries with over 50 million downloads and 2000+ 5-star REVIEWS .

In this episode, Abel shares his shocking story of how western medicine almost killed him and the amazing ways in which proper nutrition brought him back to living in vibrant health. He reminds us that we don't have to fear fat!

With so much conflicting and misinformation circulating in the news media, we have an interesting discussion around the ways in which tactics of divisiveness are used to control messages of true health through censorship and shadow banning. He stresses the importance of being able to express and be tolerant of different ideas.

Even though this episode was recorded in early May and we discuss current events, the conversation still has relevance, perhaps even more, still today. We hope you enjoy!

Episode Quote: "You can get more freedom by being healthy, and your freedom is taken away – your sovereignty, your ability to be your full, best self – is taken away when you don't have your health."

Watch the upcoming Mind Body and the Vagus Nerve Connection Online Summit

Your host, Dr. Eva Detko, became a health advocate through her own healing journey. Following a viral infection, she ended up bed-ridden with chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia. The conventional approach had no solutions for her, so she tackled the task of finding the root cause of her condition.

She realized that the real reason her body had not been able to cope with that viral infection was that she had overstimulated her nervous system for many years — the viral infection was merely a trigger for her CFS and fibromyalgia. Once she had addressed her nervous system dysfunction, she was able to get her life back.

She has since helped hundreds of clients overcome complex health issues by helping them restore their autonomic nervous system balance, which is critical to healing from any chronic condition.

She's here to help you by sharing what she learned.

The Mind, Body & Vagus Nerve Connection Summit will help you understand:
+ The location and many functions of the vagus nerve
+ How to measure vagal tone
+ Symptoms and root causes of vagus nerve dysfunction
+ The role of chronic stress and emotional trauma
+ Impacts of toxins, infections & EMFs
+ How to strengthen vagus nerve function
+ Physical and mind-based approaches
+ And so much more!

We will see you online at The Mind, Body & Vagus Nerve Connection Summit when you register today!

376: What you need to know about the Vagus Nerve with Dr Eva Detko08 Jun 202000:59:59

Welcome to Low Carb Conversations with Leah Williamson, Holly Jean Barrett and Amber Horn, Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioners.

This week on the Low Carb Conversations Podcast Leah and Amber interview Dr Eva Detko about the Vagus Nerve.

The Vagus Nerve is so important to our health as it touches so many of our major organs.  We have always known there is something pretty important about this nerve but Dr Eva takes us on a deeper dive.  We discuss how to stimulate our immunity (and there has never been a better time!) using the vagus nerve and can we also use the vagus nerve to help other issues like digestion?

The vagus nerve is the longest nerve of the human autonomic nervous system. Its fibers connect to all of your body's organs from the neck down (except the adrenal glands), making it the primary component of your parasympathetic nervous system.

Playing a key role in areas such as heart rate, breathing rate, gastrointestinal peristalsis, sweating, detoxification and more, optimal vagus nerve function is critical to maintaining one's health and longevity.

Because low vagal tone has been linked to:
+ Chronic fatigue
+ Fibromyalgia
+ Heart disease
+ Diabetes
+ IBS/IBD/SIBO/leaky gut
+ Autoimmune conditions
+ Neurological conditions
+ Cancer
+ And more!

You simply CANNOT properly address health issues — like gut, immune system or brain disorders — WITHOUT optimizing vagus nerve function!

In this 12-page eGuide, you'll find strategies to increase your vagal tone, plus facts on polyvagal theory, indications of low vagal tone and the connection between strong vagus function and a healthy immune system.

We also had a great discussion about the best time to fast and how to truly listen to your body to find what works for you as an individual.
