Wrapping Up the Fall Season (RG90)

mardi 9 novembre 2021Durée 46:08

It has been a few weeks since our last episode so we thought we’d get together to catch up. In this week’s episode we wrap up our own personal golf seasons and discuss what went well, what didn’t, and what we’re hoping for next year. We also sit down and do a fly-by wrap up of both the PGA and LPGA Tours’ fall events.

Finally, the other big headline that has been dominating golf circles for the past few weeks has been the announcement of Greg Norman as CEO of the newly formed LIV (“Live?” “forty-five” “L-I-V?”) Golf Investments that will be funding a 10-tournament series within the Asian Tour, of which Norman will serve as commissioner. The rival tour is not without controversy as it is fully backed by Saudi investors and aims to lure away some top talent from the PGA and European Tours. We discuss what we know so far (not much) and speculate who may make the jump and discuss some larger implications.

Since our offseason schedule will be a bit more sporadic, make sure you follow us at any/all of the below to make sure you don’t miss out on any new episodes. Also, be sure to subscribe or follow us in your favourite podcast player:

USA Wins the Ryder Cup (RG89)

mercredi 29 septembre 2021Durée 51:41

After crushing defeat in 2018, Team USA stormed back with a historic 19-9 victory at the Ryder Cup, the most lopsided win of the modern era. In this episode we recap all of the action, discuss not only what went wrong for Team Europe, but what Team USA did so well at Whistling Straights on their way to victory.

There is a lot of hype around this fresh, young core that will likely become the base of Team USA for many years to come. But what will future teams actually look like? Will USA continue to roll out these 12 guys and expect to keep winning? How big of an overhaul is needed for Europe? We get into some standouts and disappointments for each side and predict who we may be seeing again in Rome when the Cup is once again up for grabs in 2023.

Preview of the 149th Open at Royal St. George's (RG80)

mardi 13 juillet 2021Durée 01:16:32

As the title suggests, we spend most of this week’s episode previewing the highly-anticipated Open Championship, back after being cancelled in 2020. As per usual, Brent takes us through the historic course, some design elements that make it unique, as well as some notable holes to watch out for. While the weather forecast for the weekend isn’t looking too harsh, this course is a great example of true links golf in the most traditional sense and should be a real test for the field.

We do things a bit differently with this preview when it comes to breaking down the field. Rather than devoting too much time on the big names who you’ll surely know plenty about, John takes us a bit deeper down the field list and helps identify some great value picks for the week. We also take a look at players who have seen success in their careers playing the Open and find a few stats that will lead to success at St. George’s.

Before getting into the preview, we also cover a few headlines:

  • John’s most recent golf excursion

  • Glen Abbey is saved!

  • Recap of the Tours, including some great results for Canadians at the US Senior Open

  • PIP moments of the week

Check back next week as we recap all the action from the UK and see who takes home the Claret Jug.

Nelly Korda Wins the KPMG Women's PGA Championship (RG79)

mardi 29 juin 2021Durée 50:13

With Brent away at the cottage this week, Eric and John recap the action from the Atlanta Athletic Club where Nelly Korda put on a dominant performance to bring home her first major victory at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship. Nelly has been on absolute fire this year, also winning the previous week at the Meijer LPGA Classic. Her final score of -19 was only two strokes shy of tying the record score relative to par at a women’s major championship. We also discuss a valiant effort put forth by Lizette Salas who was unable to match Nelly’s play, but also separated herself from the pack, finishing in second place, 6 strokes clear of the third place finisher.

And what would any major championship be without some controversy? The one knock against Salas’ play was her pace, as she routinely took well over a minute to take her shot. While a slow play penalty was assessed in this tournament, it actually wasn’t against Salas.

After a great finish in Atlanta, we turn to a somewhat less exciting finish up in Cromwell, Connecticut where The Travelers Championship took EIGHT playoff holes to determine a winner. While this should has set up to be one of the most thrilling finishes, it ultimately fell completely flat as viewers watched Harris English (the eventual winner) and Kramer Hickok trade pars for over two hours.

We wrap up the episode talking about the final qualifiers for the women’s Olympic golf event and John takes us through his PIP moment of the week, which, unsurprisingly, is not PIP related at all.

mercredi 23 juin 2021Durée 01:01:09

Jam-packed episode this week! We start things off by recapping yet another fantastic major as Jon Rahm takes down a loaded leaderboard and emerges victorious as the 121st US Open champion. We discuss Rahm’s clutch play down the stretch as well as some other highlights from an exciting final round.

The week also had a ton of other headlines worth discussing, including:

  • Nelly Korda getting her second win of the season at the Meijer Classic

  • Olympic qualifiers have been set for Tokyo

  • A special Father’s Day edition of This Week in PIP

Finally, we wrap up by discussing the next major on the LPGA schedule, the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship.

US Open Preview (RG77)

mercredi 16 juin 2021Durée 01:11:46

This week we skip the headlines and get straight to the good stuff: our 2021 preview of the US Open! This week we see golf’s biggest tournament return to Torrey Pines in beautiful La Jolla, California. Last time the event was hosted at this venue, Tiger woods came out victorious completing his 3rd career grand slam, defeating Rocco Mediate in sudden death holes on a broken leg. Here’s to hoping that something equally as historic will go down this week!

In our standard preview format, we open up by talking about the course and some differences we may see from the USGA’s setup vs. the PGA Tour event that takes place here every year. Brent also takes us through some challenging stretches and some ongoing themes and challenges that the course will present all week long.

Then we break down some of the field and discuss who we’ll be watching out for this week. John does a deep dive into some key statistics that will lead to success at Torrey and we debate which type of player should come out one top: someone who plays Torrey Pines well, or someone who plays well at the US Open.

Finally, we wrap up the episode with some picks for who we think will take home the Championship Trophy and the largest payout of the year.

Yuka Saso wins the USWO & Memorial Recap

mardi 8 juin 2021Durée 56:01

Another exciting weekend of golf and we’re here to talk about it!

First, we kick off the episode with a recap of the 76th US Women’s Open at The Olympic Club which was won by 19-year-old Yuka Saso. Saso held off Nasa Hataoka on the third playoff hole to capture her first major victory. We discuss her impressive round as well as a complete meltdown from Lexi Thompson who saw a 5 stroke lead evaporate and the title slip through her fingers. We also talk about a couple of surging amateurs who found themselves in the top 20, including 17-year-old Megha Ganne, whose name we’ll be hearing plenty more of in the coming years.

At the same time, a ton of excitement was going down at Jack’s Place as Patrick Cantlay took home his second victory at The Memorial, also in a playoff beating out Collin Morikawa. Although the two put on a great display down the stretch, the victory was certainly overshadowed by some controversy surrounding Jon Rahm as he was forced to withdraw from the event while holding a 6-stroke lead after the third round due to a positive COVID-19 test.

Check back next week as we do a full preview of the 121st US Open at Torrey Pines. In the meantime, keep up with all things Ready Golf at:

PGA Championship Recap (RG74)

mercredi 26 mai 2021Durée 46:20

What an incredibly fun weekend of golf that was! On this week’s episode we discuss all of the excitement around Phil Mickelson’s historic victory at the PGA Championship. The win represents his 6th major victory, which puts him in some pretty elite company. It also earns him a place in the history books as he sets the new record for the oldest major champion. Most impressive was the way Phil was consistently the best player in the field and pulled off some very creative golf shots on his way to taming an incredibly difficult course setup at the Ocean Course.

Of course as we discuss Phil, we need to give plenty of attention to Brooks Koepka and his inability to show up when it mattered most on Sunday. But Brooks wasn’t alone; several other big names were unable to capitalize down on Kiawah Island, including DJ and JT, who both missed the cut.

Such an exciting event will be difficult to follow up, but we’ll be back next week with our diamond episode - #75! Until then, keep up with all things ready golf at:

PGA Championship Preview (RG73)

mardi 18 mai 2021Durée 01:20:26

This week’s episode is all about setting up the year’s second major, the PGA Championship taking place at The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort, South Carolina. We get into details on the course’s history, some unique design elements and discuss the challenges the field will be facing this week in what Golf Digest has named the most difficult course in America. We also break down the players and debate which style of game should see some success out there. We also make our standard head/heart/wildcard picks for who we think will take home the coveted Wannamaker Trophy.

But before getting into the PGA Championship we also (quickly) take you through the headlines of the week, which include:

  • A feel-good victory at the British Masters for journeyman Richard Bland

  • A *shrug* victory for K.H. Lee at the AT&T Byron Nelson

  • Another botched handling of a prestigious women’s event by the NCAA

The Ocean Course is set up to be the longest course in Major tournament history measuring at 7,876 yards and we hope you all enjoy every moment of it! Check back with us next week for our recap.
