From hosting parties as kids on two home hifis in a small west country town to playing some of the biggest clubs and festivals in the world, schooldays best friends Nick Halkes and Andy Smith have enjoyed amazing careers both individually and together. Here they talk about remixing , touring and so much more as they prepare for the release of the third instalment of the Reach Up Disco Wonderland compilation series on BBE that Andy compiles.

As schooldays best friends Andy and Nick ran a mobile disco together and hunted for bargain 12 inch vinyl in their childhood home town of Portishead near Bristol. At this point they had no idea that Andy would supply beats and tour the world with Portishead before one of the top 100 djs in the world nor that Nick would go on to set up the XL and Positiva labels becoming one of the UK mst respected dance and electronic music industry executives.

Reach Up launched more than five years ago at London basement venue The Waiting Rooms and soon after appeared at Carl Cox’s night at Space, Ibiza where they played for three seasons on the bounce and then also began packing out their monthly London residency at Peckham’s South London Soul Train (hosted at the legendary Bussey Building).

Following the 2017 release of the Reach Up Disco Wonderland compilation on the renowned BBE Records, Volume 2 was released in 2019. Andy and Nick’s re-edits of two tracks on the 2017 Reach Up Disco Wonderland comp were just the start. Nick’s collaboration with Full Intention, both to release original music on Midnight Riot and remix State of the Nation feat the Jungle Brothers, gained support from Purple Disco Machine, Dimitri from Paris and Roger Sanchez.From there a chart topping Nick Reach Up remix of Hideaway by De’lacey followed and a Nick Reach Up collab with Birdee and vocal legend Barbara Tucker that scored coveted daytime Radio One play in the UK whilst hitting top 3 on Traxsource. An invitation to remix Mel C took the Nick Reach Up sound into new territory whilst a rework of Body Work by Hot Streak also took off. Most recently Nick was approached to remix the Kylie single Magic taken from her album appropriately entitled ‘Disco’ and in October 2020 had 4 remixes of his simultaneously in the Music Week Upfront Top 20. In the time that all this was happening amongst other achievements Andys re-edit of Will Sessions & Amp Fiddler feat. Dames Brown – Lost Without You notched up a tune of the month accolade in Mixmag.

Despite having much to look back on Reach Up’s monthly radio show on the award-winning Soho Radio features regular guest mixes from the likes of Full Intention, Jumpin’ Jack Frost, Young Pulse, Danny Rampling and more showcasing the hottest new music along with classic and more hidden gems from back in the day. Despite knowing each other for decades maybe this is still just the start for Nick and Andys Reach Up Disco Wonderland adventure?!

Ardalan Enamored first by traditional Iranian music and classic jazz and rock, Ardalan’s taste began to transform with his childhood years spent moving back and forth from Iran and California. “Mr. Spock.” Call it beginner’s luck, or more likely, a sign of what was to come–in2010, Ardalan shared one of his earliest studio explorations with Justin Martin, which became the foundation for the breakout hit. “Mr. Spock,” in its bizarre and booty-shaking glory, has been accredited as one of the “tracks that made Dirtybird famous,” helping to define the label’s now darling reputation as a trusted source of ridiculous, off-the-wall dance floor bangers. Since, he continued to translate his deep-rooted connection to the dance floor in the studio with remixes on Toy Tonics, Play It Down, Yoshitoshi, and Dirtybird. T Williams  West London’s T.Williams is one of those people, having accomplished a full sweep of merited recognition over the years. Emerging onto the house scene in 2010, T.Williams instantly marked himself as a breakthrough artist with a difference; his unique take on house music turning heads. Far from a newcomer, his path as a musical artist started in the grime scene as Dread.D. Signed at the tender age of 17 with grime anthem Invasion on Jon E Cash’s Black Ops label, Williams went on to have mass success in the grime and bass world selling thousands of singles worldwide. After a five-year reign, Williams found himself veering towards the world of house music. releasing solo works on his imprint Local Action and Pattern with remixes for Maya Jane Coles, Ben Westbeech and Skream. The end of 2011 saw Williams nominated for ‘Best Breakthrough DJ’ by DJ Mag, ‘DJ Stars of 2012’ by Time Out and featured in The Guardian. Two relationships came to the forefront in 2012 that propelled Williams to greater heights. The first was his weekly show on legendary London station, Rinse FM and the second, Williams’ relationship with label PMR through his remix of Javeon McCarthy’s ‘Lost Time’. The remix was named Record of the Week by BBC Radio 1 and supported by tastemakers Annie Mac and Fearne Cotton. From here T. signed to the label exclusively releasing his debut EP for the label in September 2012, and in the process receiving further support from BBC Radio 1. Further remixes of Mikky Ekko, Wretch 32 and Lianne La Havas followed suit, as well as his biggest to date - Disclosure’s ‘Latch’. Powering dancefloors across the globe. Gaining his own monthly residency show with BBC Radio 1, 2013 ended with T. having played over 100 shows across four continents. 2017 marked the launch and release of the first collaborative EP with UK producer Julio Bashmore, via their joint independent Conch Records, a label aiming to push out more underground cross-genre music with heavy rotation from the likes of Moxie and Shy One. With an ever-expanding global tour schedule and further solo releases on the legendary NYC house label Strictly Rhythm turning heads, T.’s upward trajectory has never showed signs of slowing down. Using his technical prowess as a musician to educate the next generation of rising stars at London’s respected Point Blank Music School has cemented his status as one of the UK music scene’s key players.

The space includes many studios for art and music. As we talk about DJ'n and producing within the electronic music scene on this show the Beaumont studios is the home to many DJ's, Producers and the base for the infamous B-side radio. Over a 1000 Dj's and producers have come through the Beaumont and have grown their music careers from this space as well as hosting events here for rave events and more. I found that this space coming close to being shut down due to the rise in property taxes and rent prices and as a collective in the music scene we know how important it is to keep creative space open for the future of music and art. In this episode we are joined by one half of "Haynes" that is Tommy lee Haynes.   Haynes' brothers are DJ / Producer duo coming front Kent in the medway towns. Haynes have been in the scene for many years DJ'ing and producing which has seen them signed by well respected labels and making an impact in the Uk DJ scene.  

Beginning as a solo artist back in 2014, Tommie begun by playing the house music circuit in Kent & London. Liam's musical journey came to a start in 2016, often inspired by his brother, gaining a love for house music. It wasn't until after a few sets playing alongside each other that they realised their true potential as a duo and so HAYNES was born.

The two young producers stuck to a sound they wanted to make their own. Heavily influenced by their love for old school hip hop, breaks and miami bass, their music is well received during a peak time slot. Their career has started off brightly securing some huge releases on some of tech house's biggest labels.

The turn of the decade has seen a track released on Hector Cuoto's mighty Roush. Being inspired by Jesse Perez, it was a dream come true to sign a two track EP to his label Mr Nice Guy Records. The rest of the year is looking to be a busy one with forthcoming releases coming on Roush and La Pera.

Jake has been around house/tech house since the womb...quite literally, dating back to 97’ where he was raving in his mum’s stomach at 'Wiggle' events! Producing from age 14, he is now in his early 20's and after getting into DJ’ing within the past 2 years, he has already released on a host of well established labels (see discography).  

Working with the likes of top respected artists including; Orlando Voorn, Terry Francis & Damolh33. His mixing has also brought him alongside both Superfreq + Wiggle - supporting/playing at their parties.  

The unique style Jake brings to the ‘underground’ scene seems to be the perfect bridge between tech houses original grass roots... and where it is now heading in modern day times!  Recently charting at #2 in the Beatport Top 100, his single “Audioerotica” then went on to get national radio play on BBC Radio 1.  

The future is looking bright (or should we say dark) for Jake, as we all know this kind of Tech House is a thing of the night.

WE are at the Electric love music festival and caught up with an old friend.  

JGarrett is the primary music project from Vancouver-based musician and producer Josh Garrett. A native of Ann Arbor, MI, with deep family roots in Detroit, Josh came to techno and house within the shadow of the Motor City and with direct involvement in the Detroit techno and rave communities of the ‘90s. In 2000, Josh relocated to Vancouver and over the years has become an integral member of the Vancouver techno community, from running the well-respected label Subspec Music as well as a key member of the Proper Event Productions crew.   

JGarrett original and remix material has appeared on Perc Trax, Gobsmacked, Dirty Minds, Advanced (Black), Smashead, SubSensory, and many other labels. Josh has a foot in Detroit and industrial techno camps and his varied and open approach to his sound has won support across the techno continuum... receiving play from notable artists such as Dax J, Perc, Electric Indigo, Rebekah, Dave Clarke, Mørbeck, among others.   

JGarrett’s performances generally focus on his ever-evolving live p.a., which is based around creating on-the-fly reworks and recombinations of his studio material wherein no set list is ever repeated. Active since 1995. Founder of Xynthetic Netlabel and Subspec Music.  In addition to producing and performing music, Josh is an Abelton certified trainer and provides one on one tutoring for people interested in learning Ableton or improving their use of it.

Henry C is a DJ, musician based in Vancouver, Canada. His roots take him all the way back to a small, but beautiful country, El Salvador. It is his unique roots that bring an especially exquisite taste for his music selection. Henry C combines different forms of house, minimal and techno to create a distinctive sound, which helps generate his refined and renowned sets. In addition, Henry C is always expanding his knowledge for music, nowadays by pursuing new sounds through production.  

With 5+ years of experience, constantly practicing and mastering his mixing techniques, Henry C has been able to achieve quite some recognition around the underground scene in Vancouver, Canada. He is been a resident DJ for the last two years at one of the biggest clubs in underground music in the city, Are you MIA. Where he has manage to establish himself as one of the favourite to open up for big shows. Such as: Dom Dolla, Dillon Nathaniel, Dubfire, Eagles & Butterflies, Josh Butler, Gene Farris, Pete Tong, Richy Ahmed, Sonny Fodera and more. This year, at this club he played his longest live set to date, 6 hours set.  

Thinking he can still offer some more to the community, He teamed up with some of his closest friends to create this new group or movement called "The Initiative". Which in less than a year, they have achieved quiet some recognition around members of this city. They pulled off two underground raves with almost a 1,000 attendees, Now they have the opportunity to bring their events to different nightclubs around the city. They are bringing this new energy and look to their well-known parties.  Henry C has also achieve some recognition and love around some countries in Latin America, such as Mexico, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Colombia and others.

Released on Ben Watt's Buzzin' Fly label, played by Derrick Carter and Pete Tong, and licensed by Steve Bug, the single got Martin's recording career off to an impressive start. Additional singles for Buzzin' Fly and Utensil were out by the time Martin and Claude VonStroke co-founded the Dirtybird label, an outlet for both producers' solo tracks, Martin's partnership with Christian Martin (as Martin Brothers), and other artists such as Ardalan. Martin's debut album, Ghettos & Gardens, was released on Dirtybird in 2012 with new productions, a handful of remixes, and a "remake" of Goldie's "Kemistry" all part of the program.   

Justin moved away from dirty bird pursue in his new sound and focus on his productions. With this Justin had started his own label, whilst not ready yet, Justin continues to put the hard work into his new label by doing all the designing, editing, organizing you name it, his 100% effort has started and will continue to grow his label.

His visually captivating, high-energy live shows are favourites among freaky festival folk and are even known to turn electronic music’s skeptics into fast fans.   

 His releases include music on Insomniac Records, Club Sweat, Vibrancy, Westwood Recordings & Mixfeed, as well as recent collaborations with Volac, Smalltown DJs, Dread MC, Kid Enigma, Ill Phil and Neon Steve. His music has gained play and support from artists including Tiësto, Marten Horger, Marshmello, Oliver Heldens & Nicky Romero to name a few.  

A feature in DJ Mag where Rumpus was named one of “12 Emerging Acts to hear this September“, receiving the award for Sask Music 2020 Electronic Artist Of The Year, and also a nomination for the 2020 Western Canadian Music Awards ‘Dance Artist of the Year’,  shows the continued acceleration for this eclectic producer, drummer and DJ and is proving this Rumpus is just getting started!

We were chuffed to have Jesse Bro on the show straight after his boiler room set. Jesse tells us how he thought his set went and how he got into his musical journey.

West Coast producer, MC and DJ Jesse draws full-bodied, impressionistic lines where less finessed artists draw blanks. Taking his creative cues from early-90’s sample-based hip hop, Bru’s deep house treatment remains decidedly modern – and mighty soulful. He also moonlights as one half of Vancouver duo Hot Keys (alongside Ryan Trann). His sample-strong debut album, MidCity (2012) on UK label Audio Parallax finds his sharp, fluttering grooves laced with hints of cut-up jazz, dubby acoustics and celestial vocals.

London bred taste maker T.Williams, has accomplished a full sweep of merited recognition that has accelerated over the last five years.  2017 has been no exception, with a series of notable achievements that have not gone unnoticed, highlights of which include, Williams on the front cover of the Move Magazine. The in depth interview covered topics from his emergence on to the scene in 2010, his growth as an artist inking a deal with PMR records, a spot on the prestigious Radio 1 “Residency” which facilitated a number of bookings and performances the world over. The article also touched on his on going support from Red Bull Academy to his return to his independent creative roots with his Today Tomorrow records, the innovative spread covered every base.   

Another mile stone of 2017, was the launch and release of the collaborative efforts of Williams and Julio Bashmore, their first EP, one of many scheduled for further releases in the forthcoming year via their joint Independent Conch records. Avid students of house music, the label aims to push out more underground cross genre music with heavy rotation from Moxie & Shyone.    

The tastemaker also released an EP on  the legendary NYC house label "Strictly Rhythm" stand out track "Moody Dubs" premiered by Annie Mac and Kerri Chandlers Madhouse Records, the stand out track "Together" reaching No.10 in the traxsource chart.  

As this year comes to a close, this year has proved to be a stellar one for the West Londoner as he starts work on Vol.3 of his "Sodality” Series. Williams continues to produce class remixes, all the while further expanding his global touring schedule for 2018.

Joel has played multiple times at Shambhala, Electric Love Festival, Festivus, and FozzyFest. In 2018, Joel played Melkweg in Amsterdam during ADE. Joel has released music on Kneaded Pains, Coincidence, No Match, Superfreq, Groundwerk, Kiko, Play, Air Texture, East Van Digital, Nuevadark, Cuete, and Woodwork. JGarrett is the primary music project from Vancouver-based musician and producer Josh Garrett. A native of Ann Arbor, MI, with deep family roots in Detroit, Josh came to techno and house within the shadow of the Motor City and with direct involvement in the Detroit techno and rave communities of the ‘90s. In 2000, Josh relocated to Vancouver and over the years has become an integral member of the Vancouver techno community, from running the well-respected label Subspec Music as well as a key member of the Proper Event Productions crew.    JGarrett original and remix material has appeared on Perc Trax, Gobsmacked, Dirty Minds, Advanced (Black), Smashead, SubSensory, and many other labels. Josh has a foot in Detroit and industrial techno camps and his varied and open approach to his sound has won support across the techno continuum... receiving play from notable artists such as Dax J, Perc, Electric Indigo, Rebekah, Dave Clarke, Mørbeck, among others.    JGarrett’s performances generally focus on his ever-evolving live p.a., which is based around creating on-the-fly reworks and recombinations of his studio material wherein no set list is ever repeated.
