Welcome to Funky Pearls, where we celebrate the icons of R&B and soul. Today, we’re exploring the musical journey of Oliver Cheatham, the man behind the timeless hit 'Get Down Saturday Night.'
Oliver Cheatham, born in Detroit, started his career in various local bands before making his mark as a solo artist.
His big break came in 1983 with 'Get Down Saturday Night,' a track that would later become a staple of dance floors around the world.
Throughout the 80s and 90s, Cheatham continued to release music and collaborate with artists like Jocelyn Brown and Leo Sayer.

Today, we’re spotlighting the incredible career of Leo Sayer, an artist who’s been captivating audiences since the 1970s and continues to make waves today.
Leo Sayer, born in 1948, first gained recognition in the early 70s with hits like 'The Show Must Go On.' His unique style and voice quickly made him a favorite on both sides of the Atlantic.
Collaborating with artists like Roger Daltrey and Three Dog Night, Sayer became a household name.
Throughout the 70s, Sayer released a string of hits including 'You Make Me Feel Like Dancing' and 'When I Need You,' which topped the charts globally.
His success was not just limited to his own performances; his songwriting talent also shone through in songs performed by other major artists.
In 2006, Sayer returned to the top of the UK charts with a remix of 'Thunder In My Heart.'
Now an Australian citizen, he continues to produce music and perform.
His 2019 album 'Selfie' showcases his enduring passion and creativity in the industry.
Leo Sayer’s journey is a testament to his lasting impact on the music world.

Oleta Angela Adams, née le 4 mai 1953, est une chanteuse, pianiste et compositrice américaine.
Après un succès limité au début des années 1980, elle se fait connaître grâce à ses contributions à l'album acclamé de Tears for Fears, The Seeds of Love (1989).
Ses albums Circle of One (1991) et Evolution (1993) atteignent le top 10 au Royaume-Uni ; le premier incluant une reprise nominée aux Grammy Awards de "Get Here" de Brenda Russell. Adams a été nominée pour quatre Grammy Awards et deux Soul Train Music Awards.
Fille d'un prédicateur, Adams grandit en écoutant de la musique gospel.
Sa famille déménage à Yakima, Washington, où elle débute sa carrière musicale dans l'église.
Dans les années 1970, elle s'installe à Los Angeles et enregistre une bande démo.
N'ayant pas trouvé de succès dans l'industrie musicale disco-dominée, elle déménage à Kansas City sur les conseils de son coach vocal Lee Farrell.
Elle y participe à divers concerts locaux et sort deux albums auto-financés au début des années 1980.
En juin 1985, alors qu'elle se produit au Peppercorn Duck Club de l'hôtel Hyatt à Kansas City, elle est remarquée par Ian Stanley de Tears for Fears. Ils lui proposent de collaborer sur leur album The Seeds of Love.
En 1989, l'album sort avec le single "Woman in Chains", un duo avec Roland Orzabal et Phil Collins à la batterie. En 1990, Adams part en tournée mondiale avec Tears for Fears.
Après cette collaboration, Fontana Records lui propose un contrat d'enregistrement.
Son album Circle of One (1990), produit par Roland Orzabal, atteint la première place du classement des albums au Royaume-Uni en 1991 grâce à "Get Here". En 1991, elle participe aussi à l'album hommage "Two Rooms" avec une reprise de "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me". Son album Evolution (1993) rencontre également un grand succès commercial.
En 1994, Adams épouse le batteur John Cushon après avoir interprété un tremblement de terre comme un signe divin indiquant qu'elle était prête pour le mariage.

Linda Clifford, born on August 20, 1948, in New York, is a talented singer. From the age of seven, she performed in several television variety shows.
At 17, she won the Miss New York State beauty pageant and began singing in nightclubs.
She joined the Jerico Jazz Singers and then formed her own jazz trio, 'Linda and the Trade Winds'. In 1974, she recorded 'A Long,
Long Winter' for Paramount Records, followed by a record for Gemigo.
In 1977, she joined Curtom and achieved success with 'Runaway Love' in 1978. In 1979, she signed with RSO Records and had a hit with 'Bridge Over Troubled Water'. She continued to appear on the R&B charts with Capitol Records and the Red label. In 2001, she covered 'Going Back To My Roots' with Chris Bangs.
Linda Clifford also acted in films like The Boston Strangler and Coogan’s Bluff before focusing on her music career. She released six albums under Curtom Records and collaborated with Curtis Mayfield and Isaac Hayes.
In 2015, she collaborated with Martha Wash and Evelyn King on 'Show Some Love', reaching the sixth spot on the Billboard Dance Charts.

Dexter Gilman Wansel (born August 22, 1950) is an American R&B and jazz fusion singer, as well as an arranger, musician, composer, conductor, synthesizer programmer, and artistic director.
Early Life:Dexter Wansel began his career as a runner at the Uptown Theater in Philadelphia (1959-1963), where he met many influential artists. He played in bands with Stanley Clarke during his high school years. In 1970, after his military service, Wansel worked with synthesizers like Wendy Carlos and Dick Hyman, programming the EMS VCS 3 'Putney' and ARP 2600 at Sigma Sound Studios. In the 1970s, he played keyboards for Instant Funk, Yellow Sunshine, and MFSB.
Career:Signed by Philadelphia International Records as a songwriter/producer/arranger, he collaborated with Cynthia Biggs and other writers. He produced hits for various artists and won a Grammy for Lou Rawls' album "Unmistakably Lou" in 1977. His music has been widely sampled in hip-hop by artists such as Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Drake, and others. In 1979, Wansel was the conductor of the MFSB Orchestra and musical director for the first celebration of 'Black Music History Month' at the White House. From 1978 to 1980, he was A&R director for Philadelphia International Records. His LP "Time Is Slipping Away" (1979) produced the disco hit "(I’ll Never Forget) My Favorite Disco." In 1981, he wrote "Nights Over Egypt" for the Jones Girls. In April 2021, he signed with Digital Jukebox Records.
Influence on Jamiroquai:Jay Kay of Jamiroquai stated that Dexter Wansel's song "Life on Mars" sparked his passion for jazz and funk at the age of 14/15.
Personal Life:Dexter Wansel is the father of producer Pop Wansel and a U.S. Army veteran who served during the Vietnam War. He is the author of the novel "Shortwave" (2011) and brother to author Teri Woods.
