Double Figures, Double Trouble!24 Jul 202500:37:41

In this milestone 10th episode of Racing Back, Nick and Julian celebrate hitting double figures by diving into all things two-wheeled and fast! The duo kicks off by looking back at the recent MotoGP action from Brno, where Nick confesses his fondness for bars of the drinking kind over the tyre-pressure variety, leaving Julian to delve into the technical details.

From high-speed racing to low-tech reporting, Nick and Julian reminisce about the early days of motorsport journalism. From the desperate hunt for a telephone line, to the wonder of fax machines, and photographers developing photos over a cup of tea — it’s a charming blast from the analog past. Nick even recalls the time he got racing legend Kenny Roberts to do cricket commentary for the BBC!

They wrap up with a look ahead to the post-summer break MotoGP round at Austria’s Red Bull Ring, this weekend’s World Superbikes at Hungary’s Balaton Park Circuit, and the British Superbikes showdown at Brands Hatch.

Dressing Gowns, Endurance, and the Great Lost Talent07 Aug 202500:37:33

In this jam-packed episode of Racing Back with Nick Harris and Julian Ryder, Jules takes the reins for a deep dive into the fascinating world of the FIM Endurance Championship. Can he convince Nick—the voice of MotoGP—to embrace the long-haul racing life?

From there, our two-wheeled historians take a hilarious detour into the past, revisiting one of the more unusual pre-race press conferences: Assen 1998. What do Carl Fogarty and dressing gowns have in common? You’ll have to listen to believe it.

The spotlight then turns to the legendary Casey Stoner, as Nick and Jules reflect on the sheer brilliance—and untapped longevity—of one of MotoGP’s most naturally gifted riders.

And to top it all off: breaking news! Nick reveals that Doctor Martin Raines, the beloved stats guru, will be arriving on the show soon. Just in time, too—as MotoGP prepares to celebrate a historic milestone: the 1000th premier class Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring, Austria, in just two weeks' time.

Bikes, banter, and a bit of bathrobe nostalgia—what more could you want?

Locked Out, Lights Out, But Never Off Air!04 Sep 202500:34:19

Disaster strikes before the microphones even switch on: Nick manages to lock himself out and ends up loitering in the porch like a soggy stray cat, while Jules suffers a full-blown power outage and is left podcasting by candlelight. But nothing—not keys, not rain, not electricity—can stop the Racing Back duo from hitting record.

They set the stage for an unmissable weekend of racing: MotoGP roars into Barcelona with the big question—can Márquez seize control of the title chase? World Superbikes line up at Magny-Cours, and British Superbikes hit Donington in what promises to be a triple-header of adrenaline.

The episode also takes a reflective turn as Nick and Jules explore the illustrious career of Jonathan Rea, following his announcement that he will retire at the end of the 2025 season. It’s a heartfelt deep dive into the legacy of a true legend.

Finally, they tease the long-awaited return of the good Doctor, Martin Raines, who’ll be back next week armed with stats that never fail to blow the baffles.

Another ride worth tuning in for—enjoy!

Where Are the Brits in MotoGP? – with Niall Mackenzie18 Sep 202500:33:35

This week on Racing Back, Nick and Jules are joined by none other than the legendary Niall Mackenzie. Together, the trio dive into all the action and storylines from Misano, look ahead to the prestigious Bol D’or endurance, and preview the thrills of BSB at Assen.

They also take a deep dive into one of the sport’s hot topics: the lack of British riders in MotoGP. What are the causes and consequences? Are current infrastructure limitations – including the Moto3 age limits – part of the problem? And with many riders comfortable in BSB or WSB, is the drive to move into MotoGP being blunted? It’s a fascinating insight into the state of British representation at the very top.

A lively, insightful episode with expert analysis, anecdotes, and plenty of passion for the sport – gremlins in the internet connection included!

Jerry Burgess_Part 122 Jan 202600:35:05

MotoGP Legend Jerry Burgess on Rossi, Doohan & Gardner | Racing Back Ep 34

#RacingBackPodcast #JerryBurgess #MotoGP #ValentinoRossi #MickDoohan #WayneGardner

Nick and Jules are joined this week on Racing Back by one of the most influential figures in Grand Prix motorcycle racing history — Jerry Burgess.

JB is Australian, he was doing the standard European tour in 1980 when friends he was staying with in South London put him forward for a mechanic’s job at Heron Suzuki. He worked for Suzuki for three years, primarily for Randy Mamola before moving to Honda - where he stayed for 21 years.
he started as a mechanic for Ron Haslam before being moved to Freddie Spencer’s team to work for race engineer Erv Kanemoto, from whom Jerry learnt the art of being a crew chief during Freddie’s double championship year 1985.
Honda then moved him to be race engineer for Aussie new recruit Wayne Gardner, winning the title in ’87.
JB was again moved by management to be crew chief for another young Aussie, Mick Doohan in 1989. The first title came in 1994 and was followed by four more consecutively. It was an era of total domination. Doohan retired in 1999 and the arrival of Valentino Rossi at Honda kept JB in the sport. Three world championships with Honda followed by four more after a sensational move to Yamaha. He applied to analytical ability he learnt from Kanemoto and his own experiences. JB is an acute observer of paddock behaviour Above all, he wanted to win as much as his riders and he knew how to make victory possible
All of which makes Burgess the most successful crew chief in MotoGP history.

Packed with humour, honesty, and hard-earned wisdom, Episode 34 is a must-listen for racing fans, engineers, and anyone fascinated by the human side of elite motorsport.

Whether you’re a MotoGP fan, racer, engineer, or motorsport history lover, this is an unmissable conversation with a genuine legend of the sport.
