When the Provider becomes the Client16 May 202300:27:31

Send us a text

In this episode, we explore what it’s like for clinicians and social workers to step into the client role and seek therapy.  While it’s often said that to be a great clinician, one should prioritize their own mental health, this conversation dives into the “why” behind that advice.

We discuss the importance of therapy for social workers and mental health providers—not just for professional growth but also for personal healing.  Life be lifing and it doesn’t pause for clinicians, so addressing our own challenges is essential for providing the best care to clients and maintaining our own well-being.

What You’ll Learn in This Episode:

  • Why therapy is critical for clinicians and social workers.
  • How personal growth enhances professional practice.
  • The challenges and benefits of being a provider in therapy.

Join us as we unpack the significance of self-care and mental health for those in the helping professions.  If you’re a clinician or social worker, this episode will remind you that taking care of yourself isn’t just beneficial—it’s necessary.

Intro to Young Ladies of Our Future15 Nov 202200:26:55

Send us a text

In this episode, we spotlight Young Ladies of Our Future (YLOOF), a Black-led social service organization dedicated to breaking cycles of violence and creating pathways to empowerment. Often, smaller organizations doing impactful work in our communities don’t receive the recognition they deserve, and we’re thrilled to shine a light on their incredible contributions.

YLOOF was founded by Katrina Brown Lee, whose inspiring journey from surviving domestic violence to becoming a community leader is nothing short of extraordinary. After being repeatedly shot by her spouse, Katrina found healing and purpose, using her experiences to interrupt cycles of violence and support young women in her community. Her story of resilience and her commitment to giving back serve as a powerful example of the transformative impact social service organizations can have.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Katrina’s journey from survival to advocacy
  • How YLOOF empowers young women to break cycles of violence and thrive
  • The importance of supporting grassroots social service organizations

Follow Queen K on Instagram at @ms.katrina456 and @yloof19 to learn more about her work and how you can support this mission.

Send us a text

We’re back with Season 4 of the Queens of Social Work podcast! Thank you to all our amazing listeners for your continued support and thoughtful questions. To kick off the season, we’re diving into a powerful topic inspired by one of your requests: “Why Aren’t More Black Men in Social Work?”

Social work is a field dominated by women, and the presence of men—especially Black men—is significantly underrepresented. To unpack this nuanced question, we invited Christopher Scott, also known as King C and the Hip Hop Social Worker, to share his perspective.

Christopher, based in Portland, Oregon, is a school social worker, clinician, and host of the podcast The Hip Hop Social Worker. Through his work, he highlights the importance of representation in social work, particularly for Black men, and inspires others with his “Why Not Me?” philosophy.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • The barriers that discourage men, especially Black men, from entering social work
  • The importance of representation in social work and how it impacts the profession
  • Christopher’s journey into social work and the unique challenges he’s faced
  • Tips for encouraging more men to consider careers in social work

You can connect with Christopher on Instagram and Twitter at @hiphopsocialworker or visit his website at hiphopsocialworker.com for more insights and resources.

This is a must-listen episode for social workers, educators, and anyone invested in diversifying the profession and amplifying male voices in social work.

School Social Work and Child Abuse26 Apr 202200:48:55

Send us a text

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, and in this episode, we shed light on an incredibly important yet challenging topic: child abuse and neglect.  The statistics are alarming.  According to ChildHelp.org:

  • Over 4 million referrals are made annually to child protection agencies involving more than 4.3 million children.
  • The U.S. loses an average of 5 children every day to abuse and neglect, ranking among the worst records in industrialized nations.
  • In 2019 alone, over 656,000 children were identified as victims of maltreatment.

To discuss this critical issue, we spoke with Tabatha Ferrer, also known as Queen T, a Licensed Social Worker and school social worker.  She is also the founder of The 4AIR Project, LLC, an organization dedicated to creating mental health and wellness spaces for youth to learn about mental health, improve self-awareness, and develop skills to manage life’s challenges.

This episode also highlights the importance of mandated reporting and offers guidance for social workers navigating this sensitive responsibility.  Most states provide free training on mandated reporting to help professionals make informed decisions while prioritizing the safety of children.
