| 187: Let's Clean Up This Entire Ocean! | 28 Oct 2024 | 00:36:16 | |
Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. We've got the typical trio back in the house once again, and a whole bunch of video gaming goodies to discuss, so let's get right into it! John gets things started off with his thoughts on Loddlenaut, as he ignores the adorable Axolotls and still manages to see the credits roll. Randall picks up the torch from there, as he continues to dump A TON of time into SNK vs. Capcom: Card Fighters' Clash on both his Analogue AND Neo Geo Pockets. Finally, Kevin wraps things up with his thoughts on the latest Kingdom: Two Crowns DLC, Call of Olympus, after seeing the credits roll while our old pal DJ was in town for the weekend.

Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels, and welcome back to another edition of 'Save it for the 'cast!' First things first...the first ever Pursuing Pixels Community Jam is officially under way! After that, Kevin does his best to keep the intro short & sweet, as he quickly revisits a few things he's been playings — and in the process, totally forgets to mention that he & John also dive into his resolution game for this year, Return of the Obra Dinn. After that, John rattles off a whole bunch of the games that he's been booting up on his Steam Deck lately — which ends up leading us into a number of other discussions!

After that, Kevin shares some first impressions on one of the latest games published by Annapurna Interactive, Flock, after checking it out on Xbox Game Pass. Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. We've got the usual trio in the house tonight, and a whole slew of video gaming goodness to dive into, so let's get right into it... This week, we kick things off with some additional thoughts on a few of the games that we've discussed on recent episodes of the podcast, before kicking the ball over to John for his first impressions on Splatoon 3 — after just saying he wasn't going to pick it up a couple weeks back. From there, we all dig into our impressions of the heavily retro inspired Panzer Paladin, and inevitably end up praising some of our favorites from Tribute Games in the process. Finally, Randall closes things out with his adventures at this year's Portland Retro Gaming Expo, which was his first time getting a chance to go back to the show since 2014!

Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. We're missing Randall this week, but Kevin & John have all sorts of video gaming goodness to dig into, so let's get right into the action... After teasing it just a little bit last time around, we kick things off by digging into a couple of the latest games to come to Netflix — POINPY and Into the Breach — both of which have been monopolizing a lot of our time, as of late! From there, John moves on to a trio of games that have also had his attention in recent weeks, none of which happen to be Elden Ring, but all of which are AAA experiences — and shares a handful of gripes, as well! Finally, Kevin closes things out with a couple of indie demos that really caught his attention after checking out the opening bits, during a livestream with our pal ParaDyme from the Indie Game Collective.

Kevin & John kick things off with some more overwhelming praise for Into the Breach after receiving a recent DLC expansion, thanks to...Netflix? From there, Kevin touches on a few more games that he's been sinking his teeth into lately, including the latest release from Sokpop Collective (at the time of recording, anyways) — and also briefly mentions a couple of other gems from Annapurna Interactive, one of which we've discussed before, and one that he's just now finally playing! Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. We've got the usual trio back together this week and, of course, all sorts of gaming goodies to dig into, so let's get right into it... Kevin kicks things off with the only 'new release' that any of us has been playing, and gushes all over Frogun in spite of getting his butt kicked in true retro-inspired fashion. Randall continues to hang around in 3D platformer land after that, and shares some final thoughts on Super Mario 3D Land after wrapping up the remainder of the Bowser's Fury campaign! From there, Kevin takes us into 2D platforming territory and digs into the Plague of Shadows campaign — and the Shovel Knight series in general — after it won a recent poll amongst our monthly supporters! Finally, John wraps things up by polishing off the home stretch of his Xenoblade Chronicles 2 save file, in preparation for the recently released third game in the series — and also delves into some various thoughts on JRPGs as an artform in general.

Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. We're running as a duo once again this week, swapping Randall in for John from the last recording session. We're jam-packed as always though, so let's get right into it... We kick things off with a bit of an Xbox tangent before Randall shares some closing thoughts on the remainder of his time with Kirby's latest adventure on the Nintendo Switch. And while we're talking games from Hal Laboratory on Switch, Kevin gives a shoutout to BOXBOY! + BOXGIRL! after almost finishing up the co-op campaign with DJ recently. From there, Kevin keeps the puzzle train rolling, and gives some love to a couple of other games that have been sucking up a bunch of his time lately (when he's not playing Into the Breach, of course) — a brainteasing fungus-filled narrative adventure in She Remembered Caterpillars, and a turn-based tactical roguelike in Undergrave. Finally, Randall takes us back over to Nintendo Land, and shares some of his thoughts on the Bowser's Fury expansion that was added to the Super Mario 3D World Nintendo Switch port!

Finally, he gives a quick shoutout to Monolith, which was recently gifted to us by our pal Mark — the very first listener to ever reach out to us when we first started the podcast — as soon as he heard we had never played it in the Discord. Thanks again Mark! :D After that, Join join in on the fun as we chat about everything from Kevin's surprising level of moving progress, messing around with synthesizers and PICO-8, and even the short-lived blog that Randall & Kevin started up many moons ago...

| 131: Doing Hadoukens All the Time | 25 Jul 2022 | 00:47:27 | |
Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. We're back to our normal audio quality levels this week and digging into all sorts of multiplayer madness, so let's get right into the action... First things first, we dig a little deeper into Mario Strikers: Battle League after getting Randall's first impressions on the podcast a couple weeks ago. Kevin & Randall also ended up playing through the entirety of TMNT: Shredder's Revenge together on Xbox Game Pass, after syncing up for their Strikers session! From there, John & Kevin dig into an online multiplayer session of their own, after syncing up with their bandmates for some Steam Remote Play action! The highlight of the night was definitely Pac-Man 256 — and we wrapped things up with Golf With Your Friends, after struggling to remember what the heck we played before the recording tonight...

Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels, and welcome back to another edition of 'Save it for the 'cast!' As always, Kevin gets things started with a couple of things that he's been digging into lately — including a recent playthrough of Super Mario World while saving the switch palaces for last, and another developer play + chat session with our good pal Kevin Cole of Super∴Try Studios. From there, John & Randall join the conversation, and we get into all sorts of goodies — including more thoughts on Elden Ring, Formula 1 Racing in VR, Mario's various costumes over the years, and much more...

Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. We've got the full crew back in the house once again and lots of video games to discuss, so let's get rolling... John kicks things off with an update on (the) Gnorp Apologue, now that he's seen the credits roll. After that, he gives us his first impressions on ULTRAKILL. From there, Kevin dives into some first impressions of his own, after a couple of his favorite indie games in recent memory were ported to Nintendo Switch — FROGUE and Gun Rounds. Randall closes us out with an update on his time with Balatro, which he has been going absolutely berserk on since the last time we discussed it (for nearly an hour!).

| 130: I’ve Got it Baked in My Brain | 11 Jul 2022 | 00:50:56 | |
Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. First things first, you'll probably notice right away that we had a little hiccup with John's audio this week, as his computer decided to record the built-in microphone instead of his Yeti — but we're rolling with the punches, because we've got all sorts of video game goodies to discuss this week... Randall kicks us off with his early impressions of Mario Strikers: Battle League, as we find out how well this new entry in the series stacks up to the original?! From there, Kevin fires off a couple of arcade-y indie games from a couple of his favorite indie developers, PUNKCAKE Délicieux & Kultisti — Ecstatic and Curseball, respectively! After that, we kick it back over to John, who has been thoroughly enjoying his time with Moonglow Bay, which has provided some much-needed 'low-pressure' gaming to go alongside all of that Elden Ring & Triangle Strategy that he's been playing lately. Finally, Kevin wraps things up with a puzzle-filled 'metroidvania' of sorts, Elephantasy, which has completely captured his attention — even after having to start the game over from scratch, thanks to a misclick...

Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels, and welcome back to another edition of 'Save it for the 'cast!' Per usual, Kevin gets things started with a little bit of an indie game round-up. First, he gives a quick shoutout to our weekly series of handpicked 'free-to-play' games, PP Potpourri, which just recently crossed the 200+ games threshold!?! From there, he also shines some light on a trio of games that we've had the pleasure of playing during recent livestreams, while 'interviewing' and chatting with the developers about their work along the way! Finally, we close things out with a bit of a deeper dive into Elden Ring, which both John & Randall have been continuing to sink a healthy number of hours into — we're keeping things mostly spoiler-free, but digging into more of the nitty-gritty...

Kevin kicks things off with Belle Boomerang, after having a blast checking out the first handful of levels of this awesome retro-inspired hop 'n' bop platformer! From there, we move over to Windjammers 2, a sequel to an arcade 'classic' that Randall & Kevin recently dove into on Xbox Game Pass. After that, we finally get to hear some of John's first impressions of Triangle Strategy after digging into a healthy chunk of the campaign. Finally, Kevin wraps things up with Tinyfolks, an incredibly stylish & deceptively deep 1-bit, turn-based strategy game that he had the pleasure of checking out on a recent livestream while chatting with the game's developer, Pierre Vandermaeson — link to the video is in the timestamps! :D

Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. We've finally got the usual trio back together, and we've got a whole heck of a lot to say about a couple of this year's biggest 'AAA' releases, so let's get right into it. All three of us share our takes on Kirby and the Forgotten Land on Nintendo Switch. Kevin kicks things off with a brief discussion about a handful of games that he and our pal Mikee kicked around a few weeks back, including classics like TowerFall, alongside classics-in-the-making like Samurai Gunn 2. From there, Randall & Kevin dive into the recently released Grapple Dog from Super Rare Originals, which we've both been absolutely loving—along with our thoughts on the demo for Rusted Moss, which also features a grappling hook! After that, Randall appears to have found his latest sports-simulation obsession, this time digging into Retro Bowl, which recently made its way over to the Nintendo Switch. Finally, John closes us out with his initial impressions on Pokémon Legends: Arceus, after swinging over Kevin's apartment for a quick livestream a few weeks back in an effort to talk him out of succumbing to his latest case of FOMO...

Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. This week, we're joined once again by our good pal Kevin Cole of Super∴Try Studios—this time, we're taking more of an 'interview' approach and digging deeper into Kevin's personal work, so let's get started! We obviously dive head first into Kevin's work within the video game realm, but we also chat about his upcoming TTRPG Space Kings and its associated podcast, Pretend Friends—and much, much more...

| 180: Just Learn Math, Baby! | 22 Jul 2024 | 00:45:23 | |
Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. We're shorthanded this week, with Randall out thanks to a super hectic schedule over the last few weeks — but Kevin & John are here to hold down the fort with all sorts of gaming goodies, per usual! Kevin kicks things off with a bit of a deeper dive into Wildfrost, after spending quite a bit more time with this deckbuilding roguelike since he last brought it up on a recent Save it for the 'cast! episode. John takes the opportunity to dive a little deeper into a couple of games that had the hooks in him the last time we got together — (the) Gnorp Apologue and Hexle. And finally, Kevin wraps things up with some rare board game action, after having an incredible first time experience with Fire Tower.

| 121: Normal Person’s Lunchtime | 21 Feb 2022 | 01:00:27 | |
Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. This week, we're bringing you a double dose of Kevin, as we are joined this week by our pal Kevin Cole of Super∴Try Studios! We'll be digging deeper into his work next week, but for now, let's talk about some video games... We kick things off with a deep dive into ElecHead, one of the tightest designed platformers that either of us have played in recent memory! From there, we dip into some roguelike action — anywhere from some of the more modern foundational classics, alongside a couple of potential classics-in-the-making! After that, we gush about Go! Go! PogoGirl & [Speer] from our pal and0 over at Ohsat Games — a couple of masterclass homages to the retro platformers of yesteryear! Finally, we close things out with a little tabletop talk and dig into the 'Commander' format of Magic the Gathering — and even venture off into HeroClix territory...

| Save it for the ’cast! — Issue #15 | 14 Feb 2022 | 00:35:05 | |
Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels, and welcome back to another edition of 'Save it for the 'cast!' As (almost) always, Kevin gets things started with a trio of indie gems that he's been playing through over on our Twitch channel lately, all of which happen to be platformers this week! After that, Randall joins the conversation and we get into all sorts of gaming goodness, including retro gaming in the 16-bit era, Go! Go! PogoGirl, and how much older we are than the folks who tend to make the games we play...

| 120: Saving It For The Sequel | 07 Feb 2022 | 00:49:31 | |
Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. You're stuck with the original duo of Kevin & Randall this week, but we've got plenty of games to talk about, so let's get right into it... Kevin kicks things off this week talking about a few of the livestreams he's been doing over on our Twitch channel lately, starting off with the all-time classic, Super Mario World. He's also back on his cursor-clicking bullshit, and really enjoying his time with Please, Touch The Artwork and Townscaper. From there, Randall shares his thoughts on the latest installment in the Mario Party franchise, and it sounds like Nintendo finally got this one right after a few half-hearted entries in the long-running series. Kevin wraps things up with a couple other games that he played during livestreams recently, including a short & sweet metroidvania, Trash Quest, and an incredibly addictive arcade roguelike, UPSQUID.
