Sustaining Meaning in The Art Life with Mary Lattimore (Harpist)

mercredi 13 août 2025Durée 53:07

For our 50th episode, we have an extra special guest who I was so honored to speak with: musical artist/harpist Mary Lattimore! Mary’s ethereal instrumental music, particularly her 2020 album Silver Ladders, was a cornerstone of my self-care in pregnancy, and I’ve been a massive fan ever since. Mary joined me virtually from her home in Los Angeles to discuss her favorite ways to build and nurture community and sustain inspiration in her artistry, the scoop on her favorite artist residencies, dreaming as a form of processing the nightmare that is the current political climate in the US, lucid dreaming, and oh so much more!

With permission from the artist and her management, this episode includes a snippet from Mary’s forthcoming song, “A Lock of His Hair Under Glass”

This episode touches on the following topics:

The Aces in Tarot (specifically the Ace of Wands)

Sustainable artistic practices

Building an artistic community

The value of practicing various art forms in an unskilled way

Where to find artist residency programs

Artistic inspiration through nature and unfamiliar environments

Animism relating to musical instruments

The arts as political resistance

Dreaming as a way to process our deep emotions

Lucid dreaming

School of Song and their amazing Brian Eno workshop (!!)

The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron

Your Brain on Art by Susan Magsamen and Ivy Ross

Intersectionality and Inner Teen Healing with Elizabeth Su (Author and Creator of The Adventure Tarot)

mercredi 10 juillet 2024Durée 01:02:57

On this episode, I interview the fun and fabulous Elizabeth Su about her amazing deck The Adventure Tarot and her decision to center Asian-American women in this project, working to actively dismantle the lack of representation in spiritual spaces that have so often centered the white experience. We discuss undoing patterns of codependency, encountering shadow figures in dreams, navigating neurodivergence, and her journey of embracing and celebrating her mixed racial heritage as a form of inner teen healing.

More from Elizabeth’s bio:

Elizabeth Su is the author and creator of The Adventure Tarot, a road trip-inspired deck about self-discovery, belonging, and celebrating Asian joy. She earned her master’s degree in Clinical Psychology from Columbia University where she researched burnout and perfectionism. Prior to that, she was busy hustling for her worth at a Silicon Valley start-up. Her work has been featured in, among others, the Los Angeles Times, POPSUGAR, and Bustle and centers around topics such as self-love, intersectionality, and the multifaceted nature of being human.

On this episode, Raven Robbins and I unpack the archetype of the Mother through the lens of both personal and collective experiences. We also discuss Jungian archetypes in a broader context and their significance on the esoteric path. We explore ritualized healing practices around creativity and reparenting the inner child, which can be incredibly potent at any life stage, and Raven describes her experiences during an extended “fasting” period away from media consumption.

Archetypal Artistry with Emily Weiner (Painter and Ceramicist)

mercredi 8 mai 2024Durée 01:08:11

On today’s new episode I got to interview Emily Weiner: visual Artist and fellow East Nashvillian, at her fabulous home studio! We discussed the distinctly Jungian and philosophical influence on her work, her creative process and career trajectory, along with her methods of incorporating both the personal and collective unconscious into her process — letting the layers of meaning unfold over time. Her dream she brought to discuss reflects the tension every artist must navigate between the institution and commerce around art vs. the authentic exploration needed to create truly resonant and enduring work. More from her bio:

Emily Weiner’s paintings consider the art canon through a feminist and Jungian lens. By reconfiguring symbols that have been recycled throughout the history of art, her work questions how archetypal images are shared across generations — and how familiar symbols might be reordered to generate new, collective understanding. Weiner approaches each layer of her painting intuitively, and by working in many layers of paint, finds synchronicity in combinations of colors, forms, and symbols. She creates multimedia frames to further demarcate spaces of suspended disbelief in each of her paintings.

Hypnosis and Non-Attachment with Ben Glover (Hypnotherapist and Musician)

mercredi 6 décembre 2023Durée 01:09:52

On this episode, Ben Glover educates me about the world of Hypnotherapy, which is all about connecting to the subconscious to facilitate change on a deeper level. When working with his clients to help with things like smoking cessation, anxiety, and addressing creative blocks, Ben often engages the language of symbol as a means of communicating with the subconscious mind. We discuss lucidity and receiving guidance in dreams, as well as Ben’s personal history and formal training in meditation practices that foster a sense of peace and inner connection. I also do an intro about the synchronicity of our recent visit to Ben’s homeland: Northern Ireland. Enjoy!

Hypnagogic Dreams and the Creative Lifestyle with Allison Filice (Illustrator and Designer)

mercredi 8 novembre 2023Durée 01:13:24

On this episode, I interview freelance illustrator, designer, podcaster, and fellow Jungian enthusiast Allison Filice about her experiences with hypnagogic (or, "in-between") dream states, and how her subconscious mind directly inspires her art on a daily basis. Allison and I share a mutual enthusiasm for the intersection of spirituality, the healing arts, and creativity which is reflected throughout our conversation. We pull cards from her fabulous candy-colored Oracle deck, The Journey, which deftly combines imagery from both our inner and outer worlds to facilitate profound insights. I also do an intro about surrealist artists such as Salvador Dalí using hypnagogic dream work techniques to inspire their incredible creations. Synchronicities abound and we have a blast - hope you love it too!
