FINALE - All Good Things...31 Dec 202101:12:58

ELIO
Well, here we are… at the end of another year. Despite a concerted effort to try and rush towards a return to some form of pre-pandemic life, the impact of this global catastrophe will ripple for years to come. In one way, shape, or form - all our lives have been changed.

Now, many of us are looking ahead and thinking of what’s to come in 2022. Cautiously optimistic and hopeful that things will gradually continue to improve and change for the better. On behalf of the entire team at Priority One: We wish you nothing but the best in this New Year and years to come – that you live long and prosperous lives.

Narrowing our focus on our little corner, 2021 was a monumental year for Priority One. In March of 2021, our production celebrated its 500th episode and 10 years of weekly podcasting. That is no small endeavor. To celebrate the occasion, we were privileged to host several Trek Stars - new and veteran - and with donations from listeners like you, along with a matching gift by Rod Roddenberry - we raised over $4,000 for The Poor People’s Campaign. I can think of no better way to celebrate such a milestone than to work towards finding ways of giving back.

Now, here we are - having just wrapped our 535th episode. As I look back over the last 10 years, I find myself in complete awe over all the things we’ve accomplished. The conversations we’ve had with each other and special guests. The panels we’ve participated in. The events we’ve attended and hosted. The places we’ve been. The laughs we’ve shared. The friendships we’ve forged.

But… as the saying goes… All good things must come to an end.

You're listening to the final broadcast of Priority One Podcast!

I realize this announcement may come as a surprise to most - if not all - of you. With so much going on in the Star Trek Multiverse, why would we stop covering the latest from our favorite franchise? I wish I could give you a simple and satisfying answer but, there isn’t. Behind the scenes, we’ve had long conversations about the future of the show, our goals, our hopes. In the end, we came to the conclusion that now was the best time to jump on our horses and ride off quietly into the sunset – leaving behind an incredible legacy of passion and love for an I.P. that has touched so many of our lives.

CAT
It’s been such a fantastic experience being part of the podcast for the past few years. I’m truly amazed at the talented group of people that work behind the scenes that edit and assemble the show. Also to Elio and the other co-hosts and guest hosts that we’ve had - thank you so much for putting up with my dogs and allowing me to join you each week. Getting to discuss Star Trek on these shows has been one of the most enjoyable experiences and during the pandemic - it’s been a lifesaver.

With that said, we want to continue to support our Patrons since they have given so much to support us. We will be pausing all Patreon charges until further notice - but we are considering still continuing our after-hours show for you all. If you are a Patron - please reach out and let us know your thoughts.

So, even though the main podcast is ending, we still want to keep in touch via Patreon- or come and play Star Trek Online with the Priority One Armada - you know we are not going anywhere. We’ll still host our livestream every Saturday - everyone is welcome!

ROSCO
I was the most recent addition to the crew. I am one of the many people on this podcast who went from listener to being part of the team.  I think I said yes because I felt welcome, and that was just by listening to the podcast.

What I soon realized was that I had found my people. I had found like-minded people who were passionate about one of the things that has been a huge influence on my life. I got the chance to talk about Star Trek EVERY WEEK!!  What a dream job.

And although it’s coming to an end and we may not be producing any more episodes, you'll still find our entire back catalogue on our website and wherever you get your podcasts.

I want to add my own personal thanks to my co-hosts for making me feel welcome, my respect and admiration to the team that works behind the scenes to put this show together, and to thank you for listening.  We’re an amazing community to be a part of, it has been a privilege to share the news about it.

ELIO
Before we leave you, I need to thank the team that has made this possible. Over the last 10 years, we have had a remarkable group of people volunteering their time and talents to this production. Fans of Star Trek from all over the world who decided to come and play with us each and every week. From as far as Australia, the UK, from Germany, Canada, from Argentina, and the US, Priority One was brought to you by a global team of amazingly talented people.

Whether it be our website and social platforms, our livestreams, the copy written for our weekly shows… to the weekly undertaking of editing our ramblings – no single person is responsible for this production. I encourage you to visit our website and look over our cast and crew page to learn more about these remarkable individuals… because without their incredible dedication over the years, this show would not have been made possible.

I also want to thank some of our most influential collaborators and contributors. To folks like Al Rivera at Cryptic Studios who always supported and believed in the work we did to share in the joy that Star Trek Online has brought over the years. To John Champion and Rod Roddenberry, for recognizing our work and welcoming us into the Roddenberry Podcast Family. I will forever cherish the words John and Rod shared with me when I informed them of our decision. It has been an honor.

But, most importantly, a big thanks to you. Our listeners – our friends — our extended family. Over these 10 years, you have been our driving force for producing this weekly show. The team and I are forever grateful for your dedicated and loyal support. For joining us and welcoming us into your weekly routine. It has been an honor to produce this show for you and I am grateful to each and every one of you.

As sad as this may be, it’s important for us to hang on to the best parts of our lives. With that in mind, let’s remember some of those moments and share some laughs with you… Take care.

Not Every Loss Is Eternal

By Jake Cobb

If you haven’t watched Star Trek: Discovery’s season 4 episode 4 “All is Possible” our next story contains spoilers. You’ve been warned.

Still here? Good! Let’s get started!

In the aforementioned “All is Possible”, Discovery said goodbye to one of its own: Lieutenant Sylvia Tilly. This week, TVInsider sat down with Tilly actor Mary Wiseman to talk about the episode, her departure, and the future of Tilly.

Before going any further, let’s get the big question out of the way: will Tilly be back, and in what capacity? Wiseman answered (unsatisfyingly) ”I can say that you’ll see me later on in the season.” She continued (also unsatisfyingly) ”I’ll say that her hair is slightly different and she’s wearing a different outfit.”

And she'll make new friends along the way! Image: ViacomCBS, via Tor.

Being less vague, Wiseman recalled her on-screen goodbyes, telling TVInsiders Meredith Jacobs ”you tend to create a found family and that’s very much the story of our show, both on and offscreen, that we are a found family. So it felt really important to honor those relationships…[i]t kind of feels like...she’s going off to do this thing and all of these people show up for her to say, ‘we’ll still be here for you when you come back and we love you and we’ll miss you’.

It’s true, we’ll miss you–a lot.

ViacomCBS: Deal With It

By Cat Hough

In some not very shocking news, ViacomCBS CEO Bob Bakish confirmed that Paramount+ is moving towards exclusivity for its major IP franchises, by reducing the amount of third-party licenses...just like the recent buy-back deal for Star Trek: Discovery from Netflix.

In a recent media conference, Bakish was asked about the third-party licensing deals and he said that while the company continues to bring in revenue for many deals cut before the launch of Paramount+, its priorities have definitely changed and that they are not likely to renew any prior third-party deals.

They are altering the deal. Pray they do not alter it further. Image: ViacomCBS/Trekmovie

Bakish elaborated on this, saying, “as we increasingly transition to leveraging our particular franchises and original production for our owned and operated streaming assets, principally Paramount+…that, in turn, will create a decline in that third-party business over time as these deals roll off. I would note that as an example of that, we just took back Star Trek: Discovery internationally from Netflix. And so we now have that property globally. That’s clearly a core franchise for us, and it’s working.”

It appears that these efforts are working for Bakish, as he stated that Paramount+ had its best week ever and best month ever in November. However, Discovery has yet to be confirmed for a fifth season. Historically, additional season pickups are announced around the time of the launch of a new season, which they did for Star Trek: Prodigy.

Paramount+ Opens Revenue Channels

By Cat Hough

Speaking of Paramount+, it just announced the launch of 18 linear channels that let subscribers surf through dedicated-themed collections of shows called Live Channels. The content comes from all ViacomCBS properties including CBS, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, BET and the Smithsonian Channel as well as from other sources. The themed “live” channels, streaming 24 hours per day, feature the service’s most-streamed genres or specific franchises like Star Trek. Just think Star Trek Channel: all Trek, all the time.

Not like this. Not like this....Image: ViacomCBS, via Space.com

Paramount+ Live Channels also will potentially provide a new bucket of advertising inventory for the streaming service to sell. At launch, there won’t be ads in the channels for either the Paramount+ Premium ($9.99/month) or the ad-supported Essential ($4.99/month) tiers, but eventually ViacomCBS may introduce ads for customers with the Essential package. Through Dec. 31, new subscribers can try Paramount+ for 30 days free by using the promo code “PEAKSALE.”

This comes after GOG and Activision teamed up to celebrate 55 years of Star Trek, rereleasing six games including Voyager Elite Force and  Star Trek: Bridge Commander updated to work on modern operating systems. In Star Trek Armada, war is raging in the Alpha Quadrant with four races to command. The story is then expanded in Armada II, with Species 8472 entering the fray in Federation Space. Both games are available to purchase on the GOG store.

A Dual Trilogy In Fleet Command

The latest update has dropped for Star Trek Fleet Command, with Patch 37 bringing with it Part 3 of the Duality Arc, with three notable additions to the game as well as the usual collection of new officers, missions and bug fixes.

Officer presets are now available, meaning you can create, name, and save specific sets of bridge officers which may then be assigned to your preferred ship.  Also a third permanent research queue is now unlockable through the in-game store.

On top of this, the Syndicate has now arrived!  The morally green Orions bring with them tiers to unlock, daily goal multipliers and an exclusive officer, Ghrush.  You can earn Syndicate XP from select events, a daily claim within the Syndicate menu, or from the Offers tab.

ASTROMETRICS REPORT

For this week's Astrometics Report, we go way past the final frontier to hunt for exoplanets--not just around other stars, but in distant galaxies. And we aren't just talking the homeworld of the Andromedans from the TOS episode "By Any Other Name." They're just from the Andromeda Galaxy, a mere two million light-years away. No, this tantalizing new discovery was found in the Whirlpool Galaxy, or M51, at a whopping distance of 30 million light-years. And this potential planet was found in a particularly wild system. So how do you search for exoplanets in other distant galaxies, when we've only barely started finding them in the nearby reaches of our very own Milky Way galaxy? It's a classic example of the scientific method at work: thinking about what we know, coming up with a hypothetical way to do a different kind of search, and being rewarded with an exciting detection.

Now if you've been following exoplanet discoveries, you may already have heard of a search strategy kjnown as the "transit method." In a nutshell, astronomers hunt for planets orbiting other stars by looking for a small tell-tale dip in the star's brightness, that would happen when a comparatively tiny planet passes in front of its star--blocking a little bit of its light. This only works with planetary systems that, by the roll of the dice, happen to be aligned perfectly edge-on with our vantage point, allowing us to see the transits. Statistically that's a pretty small fraction of al the star systems out there. But it's been incredibly productive so far, leading to the discovery of nearly five thousand planets around other stars in the Milky Way. Since planets are small compared to stars, these dips in brightness may be only a fraction of a percent of the star's overall brightness. It works best with stars that are nearby and can be measured precisely. So the obvious question is how could you hunt for transiting planets in other galaxies, where the light of the stars gets mushed into an unresolved haze?

X-ray: NASA/CXC/SAO/R. DiStefano, et al.; Optical: NASA/ESA/STScI/Grendler

That very question prompted researcher Rosanne Di Stefano and her team to consider looking far past visible light to another part of the spectrum: namely, X-rays. Only the very hottest processes in the universes light up in this high-energy party of the spectrum, including an unusual kind of system called an X-ray binary. These are typically either a compact neutron star, or black hole, in a close orbit around another star. Gas spilling of the star gets swept up into a disc around the super-dense companion. the inner regions of the disc get heated to incredible temperatures. A large galaxy may gave at most a few dozen X-ray binaries that are so bright we can see them millions of light-ears away. but each one is a single compact source. So what if one of those has an orbiting planet that transits in front of the glowing disk? The team reasoned it would produce a transit signature that would briefly dim the X-ray light, so they went looking for one. And that's how they found the candidate planet in the Whirlpool Galaxy, using data from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory.

It turns out x-ray data sets are ideal for this kind of search. These telescopes typically have to sit and stare at a target for days, or even weeks, to collect enough x-ray photons to build up a picture. Those long staring observations are very similar to those used by exoplanet hunters searching in visible or infrared light. The transit they detected indicates a planet in an X-ray binary system called M51-ULS-1, where they saw the X-ray glow vanish for about three hours. They were able to rule out a variety of other factors that can cause X-ray variability, making a Saturn-sized planet the best explanation for what they saw. The signal was so strong because, in this case, the transiting planet would be much larger than the relatively compact part of the disc emitting the X-rays. So in X-ray binary systems, a planet would pretty much block all of the high energy light for a while.

Image: NASA/CXC.

Now I have to emphasize this is only considered to be a potential planet since confirmations require multiple transit detections. Unfortunately this planet likely has an orbital period of around 70 years or so, which means confirmation could take a very long time. However it points us towards a whole new way to search for other distant planets in the universe, and the awesome thing is that a lot of the data we need is already in hand. This research was carried out on archival data taken in other research programs--reminding us that our vast collections of research data in astronomy can be used to make new discoveries over time. You can bet scientists will continue searching data from Chandra and other X-ray telescopes for other possible planet transits.

I should point out any planets in systems like this are not going to be at the top of the list for habitability searches. Such worlds are going to be flooded with deeply-destructive X-rays way past what you'd get in a doctors office. Our search may be restricted to stars a little closer to home.

Finally I do have to comment on how excited the whole astronomical community is for the upcoming launch of NASA's Webb telescope on December 22. if you want to learn more about Webb, or the exogalactic exoplanet, make sure to check out Ask the Astronomers Live on universeunplugged.org. Every month our host Phil Lamar chats with a couple of astronomers about some of the coolest, or hottest, discoveries in the universe. 526 - Sit Back And Zap Open An Old One08 Oct 202100:48:26

This week on Episode 526 of Priority One:  the Next Generation of tours is in full swing at Ticonderoga, set photos from Picard Season 3, Star Trek Online gets spoOoOoOoky in their first Halloween special, and we review the latest episode of Lower Decks: "wej Duj"!

TREK IT OUT

Touring the Next Generation in Ticonderoga

By Elio Lleo

Over the years, we’ve had the privilege of attending some phenomenal Star Trek themed events and exhibits [or seething with jealousy at it–Ed.], but few are as spectacular as what you’ll find in the sleepy town of Ticonderoga, New York. You see, James Cawley–who grew to fame as an Elvis impersonator–is also a die-hard Trekkie. His passion was so great that he decided to rebuild the sets for The Original Series where an old retail store used to be. He didn’t just want to build the Enterprise…he wanted to recreate the old Desilu Set.

Closest we'll probably come to having a religious experience. Image: Star Trek Set Tours.

Now, after 4 years of being open to the public, Cawley is expanding! As they work to acquire an adjacent building, Cawley and his team have begun diligently recreating the sets from The Next Generation. Local news station WCAX got a sneak peak of their progress: when speaking to reporter Cat Viglienzoni, Cawley explains he has all the original blueprints as well as a direct line to Star Trek’s legendary creators Mike and Denise Okuda.

Star Trek: Picard Producer’s Sweet Sneak Peek Pics

By Cat Hough

If you’ve been following Star Trek: Picard executive producer and co-showrunner, Terry Matalas on Twitter, then you’ve seen the images he’s been sharing from the set of the show. If you are not following him, then you may want to. Since Season 2 has wrapped filming, the images he posted are likely sneak peaks from season three–either way, they are definitely interesting.

https://twitter.com/TerryMatalas/status/1442660363573465090?s=20

The images are all from what appears to be a Starfleet vessel from the late 24th century: the first image features the helm console for the ship, with Matalas noting the LCARS interface introduced on Star Trek: The Next Generation. Also of particular interest: the replicator display and table setting that includes a 24th-century Starfleet emblem and some new sci-fi cutlery. We still don’t know what the second season holds, but we have been told that the Q storyline will wrap up in Season 2. It’s also very likely that Jonathan Frakes will return to direct some episodes of Season 3.

Episodic Season Habit (It Becomes Automatic)

By Cat Hough

Anson Mount recently spoke about Strange New Worlds, echoing Akiva Goldsman’s description of the show: “we wanted our show to be more or less a throwback in every way we could... which meant more of an episodic structure. And so every episode is a distinct story...but the star of the show is the ship and the big idea of the week.”

Bridge to Astrocartography, figure out why we keep getting lost in those eyes. Image: TrekMovie.com

As we’ve also discussed on prior episodes, filming for Strange New Worlds was done using Augmented Reality and Mount also spoke about that experience, saying, “It’s wild, man. Imagine an entire soundstage where the walls are all high-definition screens and there’s a ceiling projection...it’s really interesting to be in these environments because it’s a whole other level of filmmaking than I’ve ever seen before.”

A release date for Strange New Worlds has not been announced, yet. A big thanks to TrekMovie for sharing this exclusive interview from their coverage of Star Trek Day.

Quick News Roundup

Here are a few headlines that we didn’t discuss but might interest you.

  • In book news, the first novel in the Star Trek: Coda series has been released. This trilogy continues the adventures of characters from The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager. The three books in the trilogy are Moments Asunder by Dayton Ward, The Ashes of Tomorrow by James Swallow, and Oblivion's Gate by David Mack. Moments Asunder is already available, with the two sequels following in October and November. The pre-order pages include synopses for the books, revealing a plot dealing in time travel.

  • Finally, are you ready to take flight on a midlife crisis of cosmic proportions? Then you should definitely trek out the series idea from the creators of Saturday Night Live. This new show would be titled “Star Trek: Ego Quest,” following the voyages of the SS New Shepard and its crew of random weirdos. Its mission: to just...sort of fly around space goofing off in a ship that looks like a penis.

Discovery Season 2 Deleted Tilly Scene

The second season of Star Trek Discovery released this week on Blu-Ray and DVD.

In a teaser last week on the IO9 website, CBS released an exclusive deleted scene featuring Tilly and her Mycelial parasitic pal, May Ahearn.

The scene opens on Tilly trying to ignore the mysterious May by reading a PADD. May peeks around the edge and grins. Tilly, exasperated, tries to flee to the bathroom of her quarters, only for May to suddenly appear in that room. Clearly on the edge, Tilly declares that she can't be in the Starfleet Command Training Program if she's mentally unsound, to which May quips "Well that hardly seems fair!". May argues that Tilly's mind works in “Fascinating ways. I'm inside it, feeling the throb of your neurons, the rush of hot oxygenated blood coursing between hemispheres.” To which a confused Tilly responds, "Are you coming on to me?"

May convinces Tilly to help her in her quest to observe and speak to the Captain. She promises that she can help Tilly reach her ultimate potential and change the universe for the better. Once she's gotten her message to the Captain through Tilly, May swears she'll be gone. And the scene ends.

The Season Two Blu-Ray release boasts over four hours of special features, including behind-the-scenes featurettes, cast and crew insights, and two of the show's Short Treks - "Runaway" and "The Brightest Star". If this deleted scene is any indication, some great material from Season Two wound up on the cutting room floor!

Captain Pike Short Trek Teaser

StarTrek.com dropped a sneak peek at the upcoming Captain Pike centered Short Trek, "Ask Not" this week. As Pike narrates that the Enterprise has picked up a distress call from the U.S.S. Bowman, we see a young Starfleet officer in red working frantically at a console. Suddenly, the two wall displays behind her explode in a shower of fire, smoke, and glass. The scene fades to black and announces that the Short Trek would release on November 14th. Next, we see Pike himself declaring to someone offscreen, "I need you to let me out of here." We see an officer in gold, presumably Pike, being led by two guards through a bulkhead door in restraints and a black hood. Next, we see a dark-haired young woman declare that he's a prisoner whose orders carry no weight. An angry Pike barks "Cadet! I am giving you a direct order to release me!" The cadet refuses, and Pike warns that she will never see the inside of a starship again. Ominous music swells as the scene cuts to the Short Treks logo and the date November 14.

There are plenty of sudden cuts and one-sided conversations in this teaser.  So it's possible, even likely, that the relationship between the captive Pike and this cadet will not play out entirely as it seems. What's certain, though, is that Anson Mount's Pike will find himself in chains and in peril aboard another Starfleet vessel. Is he the victim of a trap? Was there a mutiny or piracy aboard the U.S.S. Bowman? What are Number One, Spock, and the Enterprise doing to rescue their Captain?  If you haven't already, check out the Short Trek now on CBS All Access.

Star Trek: The Animated Series Leaving Netflix

Streaming giant Netflix announced this week that all seasons of Star Trek: The Animated Series will be removed from the service on December 1, 2019. This announcement applies only to Netflix viewers in the United States, for now. The show, which aired for 22 episodes over two seasons, has been carried by Netflix since 2016. Though there has been no announcement, it seems likely that the show will be moving to CBS All Access after it leaves Netflix. While not widely considered essential Star Trek viewing, the Animated Series carried on the tales of the U.S.S. Enterprise where TOS left off. Almost the entire original cast returned to voice their characters for the show. If you're a Trek completist who hasn't yet seen it, or if you just enjoy the wilder side of Trek explored by these animated stories, you can still catch it on Netflix for now.

Anthony Rapp's Engagement

Star Trek Discovery actor Anthony Rapp took to Twitter this week to make a big personal announcement. He tweetedSo something happened tonight. I asked Ken if he would marry me and he said yes. I am so very happy, and I'm so very thrilled to share this news” The tweet was accompanied by a smiling picture of the happy couple. Voices of actors and fans from around the Star Trek world chimed in to share their best wishes. Everyone here at Priority One Podcast would also like to send our very best wishes and congratulations to Anthony and Ken!

Captain Spock Statue

Are you a die-hard collector of Star Trek merchandise? Then you might be interested in a brand new exclusive Captain Spock statue announced for pre-order by Sideshow and Darkside Collectibles Studio. According to the announcement it is “Recreated from original CBS Studio Inc. archived materials and through a thorough examination of the original filming costumes the statue features a breathtaking likeness of actor Leonard Nimoy as Captain Spock of the U.S.S. ENTERPRISE as he appears in the Paramount Pictures STAR TREK II The Wrath of Khan film directed by Nicholas Meyer in 1982.

Leonard Nimoy, posed in the official Starfleet salutation, measures over 25 inches and is presented in an authentically sculpted detailed captain’s costume. The statue captures the noble feeling and character of Spock and is accompanied with the United Federation of Planets flag.

The statue is truly amazingly detailed, capturing one of Nimoy's greatest performances as Spock in one of the most beloved Star Trek films. Two versions are available, one with Spock's hands behind his back, and another depicting Spock in the act of the famous Vulcan salute. The statue's $1299 price tag might deter all but the most determined collectors, though.

Mayor Tory Beams Into a Toronto School, Discovery Style

Mayor’s log, stardate 47634.44. I find myself on a planet that is demonstrating - peculiar - customs. It appears the children, and in some cases adults, dress in costumes. Then they approach dwellings and ask for tricks or treats. In every case, treats are distributed, though more study may be required.

Trick or Treat! This past week, many people around the world celebrated All Hallows Eve - or Halloween! If YOU celebrated by dressing as your favorite Star Trek character, then you weren’t alone. Toronto Mayor John Tory donned a blue Discovery Admiral Uniform while visiting school children this year, later explaining his motivation to the just-happened-to-be-there news crew. ”This is the uniform of a Star Trek Admiral. It is really in tribute to the show Star Trek, which a lot of people of course are very familiar with through all of its generations. But also people may not know that Star Trek: Discovery, which is the present series on television, is being produced here in Toronto. And they’ve made a huge contribution to the success of our film and television industry. They’ve spent more than 250 million dollars in Toronto. They’ve created 4000 jobs in the three seasons that they’ve been here. So it was my pleasure to be able to put on one of the Star Trek admirals uniforms.

The Motion Picture Association of Canada released an infographic of Star Trek’s impact on the Ontario economy, which included the creation of 4,199 local jobs and $257 million spent in local production costs! For a link to the interview and infographic, trek out the show notes!

CBS Interactive CEO Jim Lanzone Leaves His Post

Regardless of your feelings about CBS ALL ACCESS, or Star Trek’s residing on the platform, there is no denying CBS’s forward-thinking approach in instituting the service. Now the man in charge of overseeing the launch of the Video-On-Demand service, CBS Interactive CEO Jim Lanzone, is bidding the company adieu.

On Monday November 4th, news outlets reported the 48 year-old Lanzone, who’s contract with CBS expires at the end of 2019, will leave CBS Interactive to become an executive-in-residence at Benchmark Capital. Filling the role of CEO will be former Chief Operating Officer of CBS Interactive, Marc DeBevoise.

In a statement, Lanzone said ”It's been an honor to lead the CBS Interactive team for nearly nine years, and I’m thrilled that Marc will seamlessly continue the great work we’ve done together. Marc was one of the first executives I hired back in 2011, and he has been central to our digital transformation of CBS ever since. We've been planning this transition together since early in the year, and I know our team is in great hands going forward.

George Takei Explains Lack of LGBTQ Representation in TOS

George Takei is an icon. Whether he is spouting his famous “OH, MYYY”,creating a presence on social media, raising awareness about the internment of Japanese Americans by the US government during World War II, acting as a leader for the LGBTQ community, or portraying Hikaru Sulu in Star Trek, it’s clear that Mr.Takei is tireless....and he always has been.

In an interview with PBS Newshour, Takei praised the original Star Trek for its bravery and diversity before recalling a conversation with Gene Roddenberry regarding the series tackling “the gay issue”. Takei said he stole a quiet moment with Roddenberry at a pool party, offering his suggestion as a liberal rather than a gay man, because he “was too closeted then”. “I said, You know, we’ve dealt with almost every social issue. Every civil rights, human rights issue and the gay issue is another important one. Have you ever considered addressing that? And he said, ‘you know you’re right.I’d like to do that but’, he said, ‘I’m walking a tightrope. The interracial kiss was very controversial [...], and so I’ve got to keep the show on to tell the stories that I’m telling which aren’t being dramatized metaphorically on any other show. I’ve got to keep the show on. And that, as you say, may be a bridge too far’

“Let it Go” + Klingon = Awesome

With fire and steel did the gods forge the Klingon heart. So fiercely did it beat, so loud was the sound, that the gods cried out "On this day we have brought forth the strongest heart in all the heavens. None can stand before it without trembling at its strength. But then the Klingon heart weakened, its steady rhythm faltered and the gods said, "Why do you weaken so? We have made you the strongest in all of creation." And the heart said...

...The kids asked to watch Disney’s “Frozen” again.

But fret not Brothers and Sister, for we have a hero - Jen Usellis, The Klingon Pop Warrior!

Highlighted on Nerdist.com, The Warrior/Singer demonstrates how to make “Let it Go”, the song heard round-the-world, new-ish again. Take the diddy, originally performed by Idina Menzel, throw it in a blender, add a heavy dose of throaty Klingon pronunciation, and pour it into our Star Trekgoblets...no ice required!

The four minute and twenty six second song is a little more folksy - and a LOT more aggressive -  than the original release, but it is no less beautiful! If you can’t get enough of popular songs in Klingon, be sure to follow our link to the Klingon Pop Warriors YouTube page!

WEEKLY TOP TIP

One of the most wonderful things about Star Trek Online is its ability to immerse us into the universe of Star Trek. Nothing accomplishes this more than the LCARS user interface with which we use to interact with the game. When you create a character and choose a faction you’re also choosing the LCARS style for that Faction. And sometimes it may not quite fit the theme you’re going for with that character, or you may just like a certain style of LCARS better. Well, you can, in fact, change the LCARS color palette. You can not only choose from the other LCARS faction palettes but also from specific races like Remans, Orions, Gorn, specific versions from TNG or Voyager, and even from classic versions of the Federation and Klingon palette. There is also an option to disable the Red Alert mode so the interface stays the theme colors when going into battle. But who would want to do that? This gives you some options when creating new characters or to spice up the experience on your trusty main character. You can find these settings in the options menu under “Basic” on PC and under “Options” then “Options” again on consoles.

Two Discovery Actors Honored In Miami

Wilson Cruz and Anthony Rapp, the actors behind Star Trek Discovery’s on-screen couple, Hugh Culber and Paul Stamets, were honored last weekend by the National LGBTQ Task Force - Miami at it’s annual Gala. The honors were in recognition of the actors’ contributions to expanding the human rights of those in the LGBTQ community through their portrayal of the first openly gay couple in Star Trek’s television history. Speaking at the gala, Anthony Rapp said //QUOTE// Star Trek has always presented a vision of the future where the things that have divided us as people over the centuries – race, gender, sexual orientation, age, color, all of that – none of that matters in Starfleet. It’s solely about who you are as a human being and what you are inside that matters. //ENDQUOTE//

Mr. Cruz, who once himself worked for the task force was especially touched, saying //QUOTE// To be honored by the task force for my work as an actor and as an activist is incredibly moving to me. I know the hard work this organization does on the ground, in the grassroots, on the state level, on the city level, on the municipal level, so it’s incredibly moving.//ENDQUOTE//

The gala’s theme for the year was “50 Years of Fierce”, in honor of the five decades the national task force has been championing their community.

Nichelle Nichols Documentary Shines A Light On Her Work With NASA

It is no surprise to Star Trek fans that the great Nichelle Nichols, Star Trek’s original Uhura, has long been an icon and a hero to women and minorities around the world. But what you may find surprising is that in 1977, when NASA was on the cusp of the Space Shuttle program that would define decades of American space exploration, they turned to Nichelle Nichols for help in bringing greater diversity to the astronaut recruiting program. This story is the subject of a new documentary film titled “Woman In Motion”, currently screening at select film festivals. The film chronicles Ms. Nichols’ life, her challenges, and her pivotal role in convincing women, African-Americans, and other minorities that there could be a place for them in America’s space program. The film’s website features a trailer showcasing Star Trek legends like George Takei and Walter Koenig, celebrities like Pharrell Williams and Neil deGrasse Tyson, Nichelle herself, and several NASA astronauts. The website also provides a copy of Nichol’s report to NASA on the results of her team’s recruiting efforts.  According to the report, when the project began in February of 1977, from 1500 applications to the space program only 30 were minorities, and only 75 were women. At the completion of the recruitment push, the report states that some 8000 applications were received by NASA. Nearly 1500 of those were from women.

When this remarkable documentary is released to the public, you can bet we’ll let you know! Meanwhile, check out the project website yourself at WomanInMotionMovie.Com.

Star Trek Picard Movie & TV Collection on Blu Ray

If your ideal Starfleet Captain is principled, intelligent, diplomatic, tough, inspiring… in a word, Picard, then it’s a great time to be a Trekkie! Just in time to prepare yourself for the forthcoming Picard series, CBS Home Entertainment has released a six disc Blu Ray set dedicated to the great Captain himself.

Titled the “Star Trek Picard Movie & TV Collection”, the set includes all four Star Trek: The Next Generation movies (Generations, First Contact, Insurrection and Nemesis) as well as special editions of two-part episodes “The Best of Both Worlds” and “Chain of Command”.  These specially reconfigured episodes have been edited to play both parts seamlessly, like a single film.

The new Blu Ray set also includes over 10 hours of previously released special features, like behind-the-scenes interviews and featurettes, gag reels, deleted scenes, and more.

And to cap off the set, IDW Publishing, the home of official Star Trek comics, has created an exclusive 16-page comic book titled “Star Trek: Sky’s The Limit”. Several sample pages of the issue are previewed on StarTrek.com. In the preview, we pick up with a scene of the Enterprise-D crew reminiscent of where “All Good Things” left them - playing poker with Captain Picard. Just as Riker applies the pressure to Picard, calling his bluff, the game is interrupted by a priority Starfleet communication. The Enterprise must respond to a Maquis hostage situation on Akavan 3.

Sir Patrick Stewart Beaming Into Destination Star Trek

And if you’re an international Star Trek fan who watched, maybe a little enviously, while we brought you our New York Comic Con and PaleyFest coverage of Star Trek Picard, then hold your breath no longer and book your trip to Destination Star Trek in Birmingham, England.

The Captain himself, Sir Patrick Stewart, has been confirmed as a special guest appearing on Saturday, October 26th to talk about the new show. Tickets to his appearance in the main theater are available through the event website, linked in our show notes.  Each ticket also includes a limited edition DST “Star Trek: Picard” poster.

UK’s Channel 4 Buys Into Star Trek: Discovery

In other news of interest to our U.K. listeners, British TV network Channel 4 has purchased the rights to stream Star Trek: Discovery on their E4 digital channel, along with the comedy “Man With a Plan” starring Matt LeBlanc.  According to CBS Studios International president of sales, Barry Chamberlain, “Channel 4 is already a licensee for several of our top-rated franchises, including ‘The Good Fight’ and ‘Charmed’, and we are confident they will have continued success with ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ and ‘Man With a Plan’.

Galaxy Quest Documentary Coming to Theaters

If I asked you, “What’s the funniest Star Trek movie, what would be your answer?”

Obviously, the only right answer is the 1999 classic “Galaxy Quest”!

We’re coming up on the film’s 20th anniversary, and Fathom Events have announced a One-Day-Only special event “Never Surrender: A Galaxy Quest Documentary”.  The documentary, which will screen on November 26th in select theaters, explores how the movie has become a cult classic and fan favorite.

The film features interviews with almost the entire cast, including Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, and Sam Rockwell, as well as appearances by Wil Wheaton and Brent Spiner and other celebrities. Sadly, of course, Alan Rickman passed away before he could be interviewed, but his cast mates share their touching recollections of working with him. Roth Cornet, a producer, says “If you love Alan Rickman, that's the moment for me, when we talk about Alan passing. I got choked up.

Of the documentary and the film itself, Cornet also says “Something like this highlights [that] when people love something and they come together, it can really, really, really have a huge impact on their whole life, even just a little movie about a TV show. And we're making a documentary about a movie about a TV show.”

U.S.S. Franklin from Star Trek Beyond

The Kelvin Universe continues its invasion of Star Trek Online with the newest Tier 6 ship being that of the U.S.S. Franklin, from the third Kelvin-JJ-Lens Flare movie, Star Trek Beyond. The Freedom-class exploration frigate features a Lt. Commander Universal/Miracle Worker Bridge Officer Station and a Lt. Commander Universal/Pilot station. It can be equipped with 5 forward weapons and 5 tactical consoles. It comes with the Universal console, VHF Disruptive Transmission, which when activated blasts high frequency radio waves towards nearby foes dealing electrical damage, and will increase the ship’s maneuverability. The console also passively boosts electrical damage and hull capacity. The level five starship mastery trait is Smooth Landing, when slotted activating Evasive Maneuvers will apply Brace for Impact, and activating Brace for Impact will also apply Evasive Maneuvers.

You can obtain the Freedom-class frigate from the Special Requisition Choice Pack found in Research and Development packs from now until October 31st. R&D packs purchased from the Ceeeee-store will grant either 10 Lobi crystals or the Tier 6 Promotion Ship Choice pack. You can choose from any of the previous ship available in the choice pack or you can fly home this brand new U.S.S. Franklin style Freedom-class frigate. For more details and stats on the ship, trek out the show notes.

Defend the Kobayashi Maru to Earn another Free T6 Ship

With the return of Starfleet’s ultimate test, the Kobayashi Maru, captains on PC can also earn rewards towards another free Tier 6 ship from the Ceeee-store. You can now find the event details in the shiney new Events tab in the mission journal. There are a few changes to the event. First, the amount of progress needed to claim the reward has been reduced from 3,000 to 2,100. Because the overall progress is spread over several events, when you use the buyout option for a single event you will receive up to 700 progress in the Event Campaign. The actual amount will be determined based on the amount of progress you’ve already made in the single event and the pro-rated discount. There will still be bonus progress periods, however, expect them to be less frequent this time around.

Also, the Kobayashi Maru scenario will see some changes as a Featured TFO. There is no minimum level to participate. As long as your character has completed the tutorial, chosen an allegiance for Romulan and Jem’hadar, or traveled to the present timeline for Discovery and TOS characters, they can participate in the TFO. Also, while the TFO is featured it will complete after wave 6 and the failure conditions of either all players being dead or the transport being destroyed have been removed. After its run as the featured TFO the “infinite” version of the scenario will return with the failure conditions and normal rewards. This feature TFO runs from now until November 7th.

Weekly Top Tip

The Gambling Device, found in the Lobi store for 30 crystals, is probably the best buff device you can get. For those of you not familiar with the Gambling Device, it’s a ground item that when you activate and win, it will buff you +10% Crit Chance, +10% Crit Severity, +15 Dodge for one hour. If you lose it will give you negative buffs for one minute. Now the really great thing about the Gambling Device is that you can remove it and swap in another device without removing the buff. Now don’t get too excited, this buff does not stack with Tribbles. But if you really need that Laser Dino, Hypospray, Frequency Remodulation, and Shard of Possibilities, you can swap in the Gambling Device, buff up, and then swap the good stuff back in.

New York Comic Con - Star Trek: Discovery

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f8wy08KcdI4

If you wanna wake up in a city that doesn't sleep  - then you go to New York City. BUT if you want to start spreading the news - well - you ALSO go to New York City. That’s exactly what Star Trek’s Discovery and Picard teams did for the Star Trek Universe panel, hitting Madison Square Garden on Saturday October 5th.

At 1PM Eastern, Discovery’s producers and stars, including Michelle Paradise, Heather Kadin, Alex Kurtzman, Sonequa Martin-Green, Doug Jones, Mary Wiseman, Anthony Rapp, Wilson Cruz, and David Ajala, took over the Hulu theater at Madison Square Garden. While the team was - predictably - tight-lipped, they did shed a little light on Discovery’s romp 930 years into the future.

Series lead Sonequa Martin-Greene gave insight into the direction of the season, saying “That’s what so exciting about season 3 is that when we jump to this future that is full of uncertainty, like we’ve all been saying. We have to grapple with how that’s going to affect how we see ourselves, and then how we’re going to navigate this. And sometimes it’s ugly, and uncomfortable, and inconvenient, and hurtful - but duty calls.

Trek rookie, David Ajala, told the Madison Square Garden audience that we’ll meet his character, Book, straight away ”Cleveland Booker, you’ll meet in the first episode. You’ll see early interactions between Cleveland Booker and Michael Burnham. It’s slightly unorthodox but very exciting

New York Comic Con - Star Trek: Discovery Teaser Trailer

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46ec8WnBHes

But that’s not all! The Discovery team brought a goodie for the NYCC crowd - Discovery’s FIRST Season 3 Teaser Trailer!

The one minute and ten second video, which ends by promising the new season in 2020, can be found in our show notes!

Red Carpet Interviews From Paleyfest

We caught up with several of these Trek Stars at PaleyFest NY during a Red Carpet event! Let’s TrekOut our follow-up questions for Doug Jones, Sonequa Martin-Green, Anthony Rapp, Mary Wiseman, and Wilson Cruz!

A huge thanks to Sue from Women At Warp for rushing to the Paley Center after a panel at the Javits Center to back me up on these interviews!! Be sure to #TrekOut their latest episode featuring an interview with Kate Mulgrew!

New York Comic Con - Star Trek: Short Treks

But that’s STILL not all! Kurtzman referenced short treks, then said “Last season, obviously we had Captain Pike and Spock and Number One, and that was an incredible - I think - journey for everybody. And we heard you loud and clear how beloved those characters were and are, and so we did a bunch of Short Treks with them. The first one is actually dropping this very moment. It’s LIVE right NOW.

And it did. But we’ll discuss that in ON SCREEN!

A schedule was also released for the remaining five Short Treks. Following the already released episode titled “Q&A”, … and  will continue on October 10th with “The Trouble with Edward", November 14th with “Ask Not”, December 12th with “The Girl Who Made the Stars" and "Ephraim and Dot”, and will end on January 9th with “Children of Mars”.

At the end of the trailer for “Q&A”, fans cheered and, as seems to be the case EVERY time Spock, Pike, and Number One are referenced, there were calls for a Pike-led series with a response from kurtzman saying “Yeah. I love that idea. We’ll bring it to the board

New York Comic Con - Star Trek: Picard

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FySrgrKJguE

About 45 minutes into the panel, the Discovery team was tagged out by the Picard cast and crew.

Kirsten Beyer, Hanelle Culpepper, Heather Kadin, Akiva Goldsman, Michael Chabon, Alex Kurtzman, Sir Patrick Stewart, Isa Briones, Santiago Cabrera, Michelle Hurd, Allison Pill, Harry Treadway, and Evan Evagora took the stage - and said less about what’s to come in “Star Trek: Picard” than the Discovery team did of their show. The plot and characters of the highly anticipated series are under lock-and-key, but Sir Patrick brought goodies of his own - “Star Trek: Picard’s”  SECOND trailer!

The team did spend a good deal of time sharing their memories of the show’s genesis. Originally, brainstormed to be a #ShortTrek featuring Picard, it immediately grew into something bigger. But, according to Akiva Goldsman it was a hard no from Stewart.

Alex Kurtzman:Patrick walked in the room and was very reserved and gracious, as always, but very unsure.”

Akiva Goldsman: “Wait No No. He wasn’t unsure. He was sure. He said no.”

Alex Kurtzman:He was sure about saying no. He was positively negative about the whole thing.”

Akiva Goldsman:Yeah that was a No. I know a no.”

Later, Stewart spoke about the importance of ensemble --- and how, this cast truly came together … saying “Well, you have used the word that has been most important to me since an April day in 1987. I looked on every aspect of Next Generation as being ensemble based. And in fact that has been very much an indicator of where I was in my career. That the ensembles that I’ve worked with whether they were in the theater, or film, or  television have always been, to me, like another character. What the ensemble actually amounts to. And so I think when we first met and talked in those early discussions it was my use of that word as the ensemble and the uniting of the group. Because here we sit. Well I can only speak personally, kind of in love with these people on my left...and of course the people on the right too. And that’s where the ensemble element comes from and it’s very important.”

Perhaps the most telling piece of the creative process they shared was about how they did not want this to be a TNG reunion show. Every character, every choice they made, had to influence and propel the story forward. “A big concern was we did not want it to be, and especially Patrick did not want it to be a TNG reunion show. And I think what you can even tell from the trailer, and what you’ll definitely tell when you watch the series is, we only brought people back if their story really mattered to the story we were telling. We didn’t want it to be like ‘Whoop, and then over here is Riker’, you know, because I don’t think the fans would have appreciated that either. And it was really important to Patrick, who obviously has long-standing, deep relationships with these people, that also if we’re going to go to them and say ‘join a show that’s called Picard’ that we give them something significant to do. And I think that you’ll see that each one of them has a pivotal emotional story to tell in our ten episodes.”

The Kobayashi Maru Returns to PC

The Kobayashi Maru is stranded and in danger… again! From October 17th through November 7th, Captains above level 50 on PC can participate in this Featured TFO Event.  Working with a team of 5 players, complete at least three levels per day of this TFO to earn daily progress. Complete 14 days of progress to unlock the Event prize - a Kobayashi Maru Resupply Beacon Device.  Details of the device have yet to be announced.

Priority One Armada News

This week in Armada news - a couple more fleets, Alpha and Gamma are getting close to finalizing their Tier V upgrades to their colony holdings. Congrats to those fleets! Also, we have regular events, like TFO Tuesday and special events - like the Halloween Costume Contest - where we are giving away some pretty cool prizes

Weekly Top Tip

Today’s tip can help take some frustration out of a TFO that can be difficult for newer players or uncoordinated teams, specifically the Tzenkethi Front TFO.  The initial objective of the TFO is straightforward: destroy some Tzenkethi battleships to steal their Protomatter bomb devices. Next, you must carry the bomb to within range of one of five Tzenkethi mobile bases and activate the device without being interrupted. This is where the object can become frustrating if you’re not prepared to work as a team. Even a single hit from a Tzenkethi enemy will interrupt your activation of the bomb device, making it a long and difficult slog to clear all five bases. But here’s how you can be a hero to your next Tzenkethi Front team. Before entering the TFO, equip one of these to your build: the Tethered Non-Baryonic Asteroid ship trait, the Graviton Displacer universal console, or the Tractor Beam Repulsor power with a Graga Mal duty officer to change the repulsor into a pull effect.

When your teammate picks up the bomb device, just escort them to the mobile base, trigger your equipped power of choice, and drag the enemy ships a safe distance away until the base is destroyed. You’ll want to ensure that you’ve built your ship with enough toughness to handle any concentrated fire thrown by pulling a group of enemies close to you, of course.

Step three, bask in the gratitude of teammates who appreciate your strategic thinking!

As a bonus, similar tactics can prove useful in other TFOs like Gravity Kills or Operation Riposte. Give it a try!

Star Trek Fleet Command Armadas

Early this week, the Star Trek Fleet Command social media outlets dropped a new video teasing the release of the Armada feature in the month of October. And within the game itself, details of the new system were outlined in patch 8.0 release notes. According to the patch notes, “Players use an Armada to band together with members of their Alliance to form a greater force that is capable of taking on tougher enemies.” These new enemies appear as Armada Targets within level 20 and higher star systems. They can only be attacked by Armadas, not solo players, and are immune to many combat bonuses and abilities. Defeat these Armada Hostiles to earn Armada Credits and upgrade your Armada Control Center. Leveling up the Control Center will unlock improved rewards in the Alliance store. Beware, though, because as you gather your Armada forces to attack the Armada Target, another Armada could arrive to attack you and take the Target for themselves. For full details, check the release notes in the in-game news system.

Weyooops...Jeffery Combs With i09

By Jake Morgan

A great actor makes you feel. Whether joy, anger, love, hate - a truly gifted thespian makes you ache for their presence - be it revered or reviled. We Star Trek fans are graced with many such actors and characters. Nimoy’s Spock. Whoopie’s Guinan. Comb’s Weyoun. Comb’s Brunt. Comb’s Penk. Comb’s Shran. Comb’s...well, you get the picture. This week, i09 sat down with the prolific Star Trek trouper Jeffery Combs to talk about our latest favorite Comb’s role - the devious supercomputer Agimus!

Comb’s had glowing things to say about the writing staff of Star Trek: Lower Decks, explaining to James Whitbrook of i09 what drew him to the show. ”I liked the script a lot and I’m really happy with how it turned out. I find it—the show—just to be really... witty. Rapid-fire. The joke is past you before you go, “Wh-wh-wha?” A different tone from any other Star Trek I’ve ever done. And I kind of like that. It’s refreshing. It doesn’t take itself quite so seriously as some of the other iterations.

While Combs was complimentary of Lower Decks, he wasn’t shy about his feelings towards the entertainment industry. When asked whether he’d return to a LIVE-Action version of the franchise, Comb’s said ”You have to be asked to dance. You have to be invited. It’s really not up to me. But I kind of feel I still have some gas in the tank. But you know, when it comes to commerce and entertainment it’s just like cereal: “New and improved!” [...]. So, I don’t really know what goes through decision-makers’ minds, but there always seems to be some sort of a disconnect between what the fans would enjoy and what they wind up doing. Not always. Not always.”

To find out how Comb’s felt about playing an antagonist, his thoughts on Voice Acting, and much more, be sure to follow the link in our show notes at priorityonepodcast.com!

One big happy TNG family

By Rosco McQueen

Some news that as Star Trek fans we’ve all known for a while, but is heartwarming to see it confirmed.  Yes, the cast of The Next Generation really do all like each other.  In fact, they’re all incredibly close.

In an interview with The Express in the UK, Marina Sirtis confirmed that the cast do indeed see themselves as a family.  They’ve been friends since the early days of the series… and the producers hated it.

"They hate when the cast like each other because they talk. Producers don't want you talking. They want us all hating each other and being competitive with each other, so that they can lie to you."

Sirtis explains how after the death of her husband, it was the crew who were there for her soon after. Lavar Burton, Brent Spiner and Michael Dorn all immediately visited with Sirtis on the day her husband, Michael Lamper, died. She also spoke about the support she received from Gates McFadden.

Akiva gets his Wish

By Cat Hough

Akiva Goldsman has been extremely busy of late, acting as executive producer and co-showrunner for both Star Trek: Picard and the upcoming series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. If those two roles weren’t busy enough he also wrote and directed the pilot episode of Strange New Worlds. Goldsman told Trekmovie.com that it was really important to him to set the tone and style of the show, saying “I really wanted to make a show that would have appealed to the 12-year old me that went to that Star Trek convention in 1974. And it felt like the best way to do that would be to kind of help set the tone visually, and really more in storytelling.”

He also notes that the audience will notice some changes in the uniforms and sets from how they appeared in Discovery, since he wanted it to look more in line with the Original Series.

As we have mentioned in previous episodes, Strange New Worlds will be episodic, and Goldsman expounds on that, saying “Our characters will carry with them what they suffer from, or what they learned, from episode to episode. But the stories are episodic.”

In addition to the show being episodic, Goldsman says that the show is meant to be an ensemble piece - so it won’t just be ‘The Pike Show’ and while it won’t go into every character’s backstory each episode, there will be a “focus” on different characters as the show goes on.

Starfleet snippets from Prodigy showrunners

By Rosco McQueen

Star Trek: Prodigy is a month away from its debut, and the showrunners are dropping some tiny trek nuggets in interviews.  In a chat with TrekMovie, Prodigy executive producers Kevin and Dan Hageman and co-executive producer/director Ben Hibon reinforced the idea that this new series, specifically for kids, is an entry point to the franchise.

Kevin Hagemen said “While these are kids in our show, they’re in the adult world of Trek. And they’re gonna slowly discover it, and have their falls, and their victories and stuff. It really is a show for people who have not experienced Trek before.

The journey of the Prodigy crew starts in the Delta Quadrant, with many familiar races that Voyager came across. In the interview the producers mention there are very well thought out reasons why we will see so many Alpha species in the Delta Quadrant, but that no one has really got it yet. They also mention that the USS Protostar was launched after Voyager returned home, but then quickly halt the conversation around the prototype’s secret origins.  The show takes place in 2383, five years after Voyager returned home.

Combat Alert! Defense screens up! Arm the lasers!

Prompted by a recent STO Reddit thread, website Massively OP dedicated their “Massively Overthinking” column on September 23rd to one question. “Would you play your favorite MMO without its IP?”

Many MMO’s were on the table for discussion, but there were some interesting opinions on Star Trek Online.

Writer Andy McAdams pointed out “I started binging on Star Trek Discovery again and it made me want to play the game, so I downloaded it. But I know I don’t particularly enjoy the game and I’m only playing it for the IP. For me, I don’t think it would stand on its own.”Another writer, Tyler Edwards, says “I don’t think I’d ever have spent any significant amount of time on this game without the IP”.  But he hits an important note pointing out that “What makes the game work is the massive amount of love the people behind it clearly have for the Star Trek universe.

CBS CEO Joe Ianniello Talks about the Future

Following last week’s news of a CBS-Viacom re-unification, CBS CEO Joe Ianniello sat down with the LA times to talk about his place in - and the direction of - the newly merged ViacomCBS.

LA Times Staff Writer Stephen Battaglio asked how the 51 year-old-Iannello was able to guide CBS through the tumultuous departure of former-CEO Les Moonves. Iannello’s response sounded very PIKE. “The most important thing is you have to listen and you have to be decisive in what moves you make. In the middle of all of this what I would say is, forget about what you think you know. Go around, meet the people and listen. Take a deep breath and go with your gut.

In regards to the push-and-pull of exclusivity vs. distribution, Ianniello discussed ViacomCBS’ approach “I understand the tension between the two. But what I would say is we kind of have the best of both worlds where we’re able to redeploy licensing dollars into more content. We want to put enough content in there to make sure we’re driving subs. With “Star Trek” internationally we licensed the first series to Netflix and the second one to Amazon. CBS All Access will be the only place to get all of [the “Star Trek” series], so it does differentiate us among its competitors.

Michael Dorn’s “Worf” Pitch Isn’t Dead and Buried

With excitement for “Star Trek:Picard” reaching fever pitch, it could be easy to forget about an older “Next Generation” spin-off pitch - Michael Dorn’s “Worf” series. But fear not, the Star Trek alum will NEVER let us forget.

Speaking at Keystone Comic Con in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Dorn discussed his proposed addition to the Star Trek mythosI wrote it in 2012-13, and it’s been going like this: a lot of interest, no interest, a lot of interest, no interest ... A guy who was a producer at this one place that I was pitching it came up to me before the meeting and [said], ‘I gotta tell you, your character meant so much to me' ... It fits so well into this new Star Trek universe. It just fits right in there. We’ll see.

Fellow TNG co-star and long-time friend of Dorn - Marina Sirtis - added her thoughts, saying “I read [his pilot script] and I called him up and said, ‘How did you do that? He had all the action stuff minutely detailed … I was very impressed with my best friend.

Prop Store To Auction Spock’s TOS Uniform

If you’re interested in television and movie props, or you’re just a trekkie with some money burning a hole in your pocket, then we’ve got a story for you!

Film and TV memorabilia company, Prop Store, will be hosting “one of Europe's largest and most exciting Entertainment Memorabilia Live Auctions across two days at the ODEON BFI IMAX in London, September 30th and October 1st 2019”. Upcoming Patrol User Interface

Last week, on the Ten Forward weekly community live stream, Ambassador Kael and UI Artist Jo Gianulis gave players an introduction to the forthcoming Patrol UI. The new Patrol UI will be presented as a new tab on the Operations UI alongside TFO, PvP, and Private operations. Players will be able to directly launch any Patrol mission directly from this UI, regardless of their Sector Space position, and will be returned to their starting position when the mission is completed. Patrols are designed for single player action, though they’ll support a full team, with no wait for queueing. Just click ‘Launch’ to immediately get into the mission. The new system will come with five brand new Beta Quadrant patrols and five pre-existing Delta Quadrant patrols. More of the many existing patrols will be added quickly post-launch. The new Beta patrols are tied to the new Awakening story line surrounding the Mycelial Network and Spore colonies. And for the completists among us, new Accolades will also be introduced with the new system.

Test Your Build on Tribble at Starbase 234

According to STO’s recent blog, “Starbase 234 has been rebuilt from the ground up to once again serve as a training ground for Alliance starships. This improved Starbase makes extensive use of holographic technology to allow captains to engage in simulated combat in a wide variety of situations.”  What this news means for players is a built-in mission that allows them to choose their own combat challenge, specify desired difficulty, and get real-time feedback from STO’s own combat parsing functionality. At least for now, the entirely new system will be available only on Tribble via interaction with the Tribble Test Vendor on Drozana Station. Starbase 234 will offer no mission rewards, but presents a unique opportunity to test builds and measure combat effectiveness against a variety of enemies and situations.

New Romulus Command Decides to Share the Love

After teasing the change in a recent fiction blog, Cryptic announced last week that “[Romulan] leadership has decided it’s time to return the trust that has been shown to them, and allow their trusted allies the opportunity to test out their Singularity technology and specialized ship”. Nearly all Romulan ships that were exclusive to that faction will become available to Starfleet, KDF, and Dominion Vanguard captains. The captains need only have completed the Tutorial and, if applicable, advance to the 25th century. If you’ve been waiting years to put your Federation Captain in command of a Scimitar, well now’s your chance!

Event UI - Prelude

On Tuesday, August 27, the Star Trek Online team officially announced their newest UI update: The Event Rewards Tab

In a post, written by UI artist Joanna Gianulis, it was stated that “The Events now live on their own tab in the Mission Journal. There can now be multiple types of events, each tailored to their own specific goal and rewards.[...] Progress will now work like earned XP where you simply gain it until you reach your goal and then you can claim your reward. [...] All progress for upcoming Events will also now be truly account-wide, allowing you to participate in any of the new activities on any of your characters without having to worry about who had how much progress toward which reward on your account.

Information is still scarce, but we are monitoring the situation, and will likely have more to report next week!

Star Trek Leaves Spacedock in CSC

Crypto Space Commander, CSC, launched for Early Access this summer, and now on August 29th, Star Trek will be crossing over into CSC’s Galactic Federation. We’ve introduced listeners to CSC before, a sandbox space MMO built on an Ethereum based player economy. When this event begins on August 29th, the game will sell off the original Enterprise NCC-1701, the first of its six new Star Trek starships, in a six day Dutch auction, starting at $200,000 going down to as low as $0. Yes, we said $200,000. Other new Star Trek ships will be auctioned in turn after that. Additionally, 10,000 Star Trek Supply Crates will go on sale for $25 each. Each crate will contain one Star Trek starship and four random Star Trek modules. In the Supply Crates, you’ll have a 90% chance of obtaining a Rio Grande Runabout-class starship, as seen in Deep Space Nine. The remaining 10% of crates will have one of these rarer starships: the Enterprise, Enterprise-D, Voyager, Defiant, or Rotarran. Viacom and CBS Merge to Become  - ViacomCBS

There are stories that we cover here on Priority One Podcast that tend to keep popping up. Star Trek Kelvin IV, Tarantino Trek, how Guard Frequency is a pretty good show and you should check it out. But one story that has popped up for years, the reunification of Viacom and CBS, may finally be getting a conclusion!

It had been suspected that talks were “Heating up” between the two National Amusement properties back in April, when CBS Acting Chief Executive Joe Ianniello’s contract was extended through 2019. It was believed that Ianniello, who had been serving as former CBS CEO Les Moonves’ replacement since September 2018, was both amicable to - and necessary for - a re-unification of CBS and Viacom. On May 30th, CNBC reported that merger negotiations were set to resume in mid-June. Then, on July 15th, both CBS and Viacom announced that they would present their financial earnings reports on the same day, August 8th, for the first time in “many quarters” - sending the industry into a state of rampant speculation. Finally, on August 13th, the deal was announced.

The new entity, known as ViacomCBS, will merge assets from both companies - including Showtime, Nickelodeon, CBS Television Studios, and Viacom’s newly acquired streaming service Pluto TV. Viacom CEO Bob Bakish will serve as President and CEO of the newly merged company, and former CBS interim-CEO Joseph Ianello will serve as a chairman and CEO of CBS. Board Chair, and orchestrator of the merger, Shari Redstone said in the official announcementMy father once said ‘content is king,’ and never has that been more true than today. Through CBS and Viacom’s shared passion for premium content and innovation, we will establish a world-class, multiplatform media organization that is well-positioned for growth in a rapidly transforming industry

Star Trek was specifically cited as an asset by CEO Bob Bakish in an investment press presentation, expanding on the release by saying “We will have one of the largest libraries of iconic intellectual property, including more than 140,000 premium television episodes and over 3,600 film titles. Notably, this library reunites TV and film rights for some of our most popular franchises, including Star Trek and Mission: Impossible. And we see significant potential to better leverage these and other properties across platforms and assets, including film, television, live events, recreation and consumer products.

While much of the excitement centers on the combination of intellectual properties - including “Mission Impossible”, “NCIS”, “Transformers”, “South Park”, “The Twilight Zone”, and of course “Star Trek” - a big factor in the merger seems to focus on “Direct to Consumer” video-on-demand services. In an investor call made on August 13th, Ianello said “Just think about adding content from Nickelodeon, BET, MTV, Comedy Central to CBS All Access, and Paramount movies to Showtime. And also imagine our [ad-supported video on demand] properties like CBS Sports HQ and ET Live being added to Pluto [TV]. Plus, all of this will increasingly be done on a global basis.”. When asked whether the price-points of ViacomCBS’s current VOD services will be affected by the merger, Ianello said ViacomCBS would take a “slow and steady” approach to any changes.

Awakening: Beneath the Skin!

Previously in Star Trek Online, the villainous J’Ula unleashed her fearsome Mycelial weapon upon the Federation, catapulting her fleet of 23rd century Klingons into 2410, along with your Age of Discovery player Captains. Awakening: Beneath the Skin will be the next episode in the story, releasing on PC September 10th and later this year on consoles.  Joined by Star Trek Discovery’s Anthony Rapp, voicing a holographically reconstructed Paul Stamets, your Captain must venture into the Mycelial Network itself to stop J’Ula before she turns the power of her weapon on the planet Andoria.

Putting the “Temporal” in “Temporal Starships”

A number of frequently requested changes will be coming to Star Trek Online soon(™)!

First, the entire collection of T6 Temporal Destroyers and Science Vessels originally released with the Temporal Lock Box are being brought up to date with the Temporal Specialization. These ships will now boast a Temporal Operative specialization on the Commander bridge officer seating, and will gain access to the Molecular Reconstruction game mechanic.

Second, ships formerly called “Flight-Deck Cruisers” are being uniformly updated to “Flight-Deck Carriers”. As such, they will retain the 8 weapon configuration of Engineering cruisers, while boasting 2 hangar bays as carriers. All ships of the type will also have access to the Shield Frequency Modulation and Attract Fire cruiser commands.

Lastly, not unlike the changes to Flight-Deck Carriers, current Escort Carriers are also being updated. To reinforce the differences between these ships and other true carriers, these ships will be reclassified as Strike Wing Escorts. Additionally, their Quick Deployment ship mastery will be replaced with Enhanced Weapon Systems.

XMPP Sunset

As of September 19th 2019, Star Trek Online will end support for XMPP client connections to its internal chat systems. This change has been explained in a Cryptic blog as a measure taken in order to cut down on gold spamming activity over in-game chat channels.

TREK IT OUT

by Jake Morgan

Discovery and Short Treks

This is it. San Diego Comic Con. The biggest pop culture convention. In. The. World. And Star Trek was there in FULL force. On Saturday, July 20th, Star Trek’s creative teams and on-screen talent took over the vaunted “Hall H” for an hour and a half, and gave us a taste of what’s to come from our favorite franchise!

First to take the stage was the Star Trek: Discovery team, including showrunner Michelle Paradise, Star Trek Franchise Lead Alex Kurtzman, Executive Producer Heather Kadin, Series Lead Sonequa Martin-Green, and series newcomer David Ajala. Kurtzman started the season 3 discussion by saying “So there will be lots of huge changes in season three. There will be things you recognize, there will be things you don’t recognize. Part of the fun of it is that we get to honor canon but shake it up hugely. We’re not erasing anything, so please don’t worry about that. It’s all still what it was

Kurtzman also discussed Discovery’s newest character, “Book”. “His full name is Cleveland Booker and he will be a character who isn’t exactly what you expect right away. When they get to the other side of the wormhole, they have big problems. In fact, even getting to find each other may be really difficult, because they may not have actually landed in the same place.

After announcing the addition of SIX new Short Treks, the panel released a one minute and forty-two second trailer that featured Anson Mount’s Christopher Pike, a “Fascinating” Turbolift ride with Number One and Ensign Spock, and tribbles galore. Kurtzman explained that there will be THREE Short Trek’s that include Pike, Number One, and Spock, two animated featurettes, and a Prequel to “Star Trek: Picard” that takes about 15 years prior to the series start.

Finally, Alex Kurtzman teased a possible Pike series by saying “There’s obviously been a lot of speculation about whether Pike and Number One and Spock would get there own show. So I guess my question to you guys is, do you want them to get their own show? [FANS CHEERING] Okay, we’ll think about it.

Star Trek: Lower Decks

Next to hit the stage was the team from Star Trek’s upcoming animated-comedy - Star Trek: Lower Decks. During the panel, moderated by series regular Jerry O’Connell, Mike McMahon described the time frame of the show, saying “It takes place in 2380, so it’s right after “Nemesis”, Voyager is back.I’m a TNG guy, I really wanted to do it like that

McMahon, with the help of panelists and series stars Tawny Newsome and Jack Quad, described the uptight Ensign Boimler and the Devil-May-Care Ensign Mariner saying “Boimler and Mariner are often given the same jobs and go about it in totally different ways.”. Of the newly-graduated-Medical Ensign Tandi, McMahon says “there’s no gross alien illness that she’s not just absolutely thrilled to be dealing with”. McMahon goes on to compare engineering Ensign Rutherford to another famous TNG engineer “like Geordie LaForge, he is amazing at engineering stuff, but unlike Geordie LaForge he DOES NOT solve the problems by the end of every episode

Finally, McMahon discusses the California-Class U.S.S. Cerritos’ command crew “It was important to me that our ship felt like it was a real operating ship in Starfleet, and that there were characters in the ship, Senior officers, who consider it to be their show - even though it’s not

Star Trek: Picard SDCC Panel

Last, but certainly not least, the production team and cast of the upcoming “Star Trek: Picard” took the stage, and they did not disappoint. During their forty minute panel, the team discussed the highly anticipated series..

Sir Patrick Stewart and Alex Kurtzman reiterated points regarding Stewart’s return to the character and the difference in tone between Picard and Discovery, with Producer Heather Kadin referring to Picard as more “Lyrical and Grounded” than Discovery. The cast could not say much about their roles, but most agreed with Allison Pill, who plays Dr. Agnes Jurati “think the really interesting thing about this cast as a  whole is everybody here is pretty broken, in terms of their character, in very interesting ways and different to a lot of what we’ve seen. There’s just a lot of lonely sad sacks.

Then, Sir Patrick Stewart introduced the series first full-length trailer. The excitement in Hall H was so high, they had to play it twice.

In the two minute and nine second presentation, a conflicted Picard recalls the sacrifice of Commander Data and admits that, despite trying, he does not feel that he belongs on the family vineyard. A young woman -Dahj - approaches Picard in need of help, and the former Starfleet officer feels drawn to do so. We are introduced to the cast of the series with bits of action, a possible Borg experimentation facility, a Borg cube, and the ominous proclamation that “She’s the end of all, she’s the destroyer”. As the action slows, Star Trek: Voyager’s 7 of 9 - portrayed by Jeri Ryan - asks Jean-Luc Picard if he’s there to save the Galaxy. In the final scene, Picard is holding a hand of cards. He looks up and says “I don’t want the game to end”, and it is revealed that Picard is speaking to Commander Data, who replies “I can see that Captain”.

Following the trailer, Jeri Ryan, Brent Spiner, and “Star Trek: The Next Generation’s” Hugh of Borg - John Del Arco - joined the panel. In responding to a question regarding his return to the iconic role of Data, Brent Spiner replied “The possibility of standing next to Patrick on a set again was just more I could say no to. And I had to consider the fans as well. To think that this was going to happen, and there was a possibility that I might be there - there was no way I could refuse that. Of course I had to be there.”. But Stewart and Spiner will not be the only Next Gen Alumni to appear on the upcoming series. Show-Runner Michael Chabon said “The joy on Patrick’s face on the days when we’ve had returning cast members, and in particular one whose name came up earlier - but I just want to mention is a part of “Star Trek: Picard” - not only having directed 2 episodes, but will be returning along with Marina Sirtis, and that is Jonathan Frakes

Picard After The Panel With TV Line

While the news that dropped on the stage of Hall H was HUGE, some of the clarifications after the panel were equally interesting. In a ten minute interview with TV Line, the cast shed some light on what we saw and heard.

John Del Arco, the actor who played the Borg “Hugh” in “Decent”, confirmed Hugh’s status. “I can confirm to you that I’m still a part Borg, and that I am a developed human version of the last time I saw [Picard]. As they’re leaving the planet [In “Decent, Part II”], I say ‘well what are we going to do now, we have no leader?’ and Picard says ‘I don’t think that’s true’. So the implication being, in TNG, I ended up with this colony of Borg. And all I can say is that he has developed further in his leadership capacities.

Brent Spiner also cleared up any confusion about who he’ll be playing in the upcoming series. When asked if he was indeed playing Data, not B4, Spiner elaborated “Correct, although i think in that draw is B4. But Data is indeed on the show. I spoke to Alex Kutzman about this morning to be able to say that, not to lead you down a path, but he isn’t in every episode. He makes some  appearances, but he is IN THE SHOW in other ways

Sir Patrick spoke about his thoughts on more of his Star Trek: The Next Generation costars joining him on Picard. Stewart was clear that he did not want to remake TNG, and said “I know that our lovely fanbase were hoping that they would see the crew of the Enterprise all back. But no, that’s NEVER going to happen, but there are encounters - some of which have been shot, some of which are only still in the planning stage. But hopefully we will have more than one season and there will be other opportunities. And apart from the principal cast of Next Generation, there were other characters that we encountered at different times who also might show up again”Finally, Stewart teased a return to the TNG uniform, saying “I did strongly make the point that I did not want to be in a uniform. At all. And I spoke strongly about that, and I have just made myself look slightly foolish by insisting that in the end of next week’s work, I will be in a uniform [...] It’s a  flashback, and I said in order for this to have the right kind of context, I need to be in a uniform.

TREK IT OUT

“Star Trek: Picard” Key Art Revealed

The “Star Trek: Picard” team gave us a nice surprise before San Diego Comic Con and Star Trek Las Vegas - Star Trek: Picard’s Key Art!

On July 10th, the art was dropped by both Sir Patrick Stewart’s and Star Trek’s social media outlets. It features the contemplative former Captain in a long coat and high boots. His back is to the audience, though his profile is visible. He is not overlooking the beautiful vineyard and explosive sky that stands in the distance, or the wine barrels nearer, but rather he is looking down - away. But the good Captain is not alone. With him sits - A DOG! His assumedly-loyal companion is wearing a collar sporting a Starfleet Delta, which some keen eyed fans noticed looks to have “_1” on it.

Later, Star Trek’s twitter account added an animated gif that pans across the landscape, landing on the final piece of static art.

Levar Burton Expects Geordie in “Star Trek: Picard”

So we MAY be getting a “Number 1” - of sorts - in the new Picard series, but will we ever get to see the proper Next Gen cast join Sir Patrick? LeVar Burton thinks so!

Appearing at the premiere of Disney’s “The Lion King”, Burton - who played Chief Engineer Geordie LaForge - was asked by CNN about the likelihood of a TNG reunion on “Star Trek: Picard” “Each of us, I would say certainly, right? It is unreasonable to assume that he doesn't know those people anymore, or that he stopped talking to them. And if he did there's good storytelling in why

But Burton also made clear that this wasn’t “Star Trek: The Next NEXT Generation” - it was “Star Trek: Picard” “Are you gonna see all of us together, again, in a scene or episode? I don't know. There's a lot of paper that needs to be papered, before we get there.

McKenzie Westmore On “Star Trek: Picard”: “Cat’s out of the bag”

The Westmore family has made quite an impact on Star Trek, and it doesn’t look like they are done yet!

On Saturday, July 13th, McKenzie Westmore posted a time-lapsed video to her instagram feed. The video shows the 42-year-old actress, best known for her work on the NBC Soap Opera “Passions”, getting a full head cast. Accompanying the post, Westmore said “There’s such a great story to go along with how all of this came about from beginning to end but for now here’s a little peek at what I went through to transform into what @nevillepage created! More of the story to come!

I can’t express enough how great it was to be part of the Star Trek family again with @sirpatstew even if just a moment. I’ve known him for 30 years! Thank you to all involved!! #startrek #picard #comingsoon #family #excited #cantwait #transformation #saturdayvibes #saturdaymorning #actor #actorslife #moretocome #sirpatrickstewart #honored #hollywood

Westmore, who has worked as an extra and guest star on Star Trek before, said later on TwitterCats out of the bag! #StarTrekPicard

David Mack a Consultant on a Pair of Star Trek Animated Series

Prolific Star Trek author David Mack has some exciting news as well.

Mack, the author of over 30 Star Trek novels, broke the news on Twitter, saying “Now it can be told (because my agent secured me permission from the production company): I am excited to be working as a consultant on two new Star Trek animated TV series — Lower Decks, and another whose details remain classified. And that's all I can say about that. #DreamJob

Following a story that claimed Mack was in the writer’s room, the 50 year-old author clarified on TwitterIn case you see this story before it gets corrected: The headline and story are INCORRECT. I am NOT in the writers room on either animated series. I am NOT providing writing services to either show. I am an outside consultant, and my services are strictly advisory in nature.

WEEKLY TOP TIP

Shopping on Risa

Before the summer event ends I wanted to draw attention to a few items that, if you don’t have or know about, can be really helpful. If you don’t have at least a very rare floater and power board you’re just doing Risa wrong. Not only will they help you grind out more Lohlonat Favors, but it’s just plan fun to zoom around the island in style. And on the plus side, you can also use the power board on your fleet’s Colony World. Do you need an ultra rare power board? They can really make you fast in the races, but unless you’re an expert power boarder, I find the speed of the ultra rares makes me lose more races then win. But your mileage may very. Don’t forget that there’s a new Baseball themed Tribble this year. Rumour has it feeding a Tribble a Stadium Soft Drink or a Jipper will create a Grand Slam Tribble. But I wouldn’t hit it with a baseball bat, but petting it will give you a 2.5% run speed boost and 5% melee attack damage boost. The last item I want to mention is the Kit Module Graviton Spike. This Tactical Kit module is a staple in many Tactical ground builds. When activated your next weapon attack for 20 seconds triggers additional kinetic damage with 50% shield penetration, knock backs enemies towards the center of the area of effect, and slows enemies by 50% for 5 seconds. Even if you’re not a Tactical officer, check out the other kit modules available in the Summer Event store. You may be surprised to find something useful. Also, once you have access to the Summer event store by completing the welcome project when you first get to Risa, you will always have access to the Summer Event Store in the Events Reputation tab.

Star Trek Conflick Review

In the newest tabletop offering from WizKids games, Star Trek: Conflick in the Neutral Zone, players will send their ships into the neutral zone to collect dilithium, grow their fleet of starships, and earn command points to win the game. Unlock most other Star Trek boards games, this is also a dexterity game. In Star Trek: Conflick you literally flick your wooden starship tokens across the board trying to either land on a planet to collect resources or you’re trying to knock your opponents’ ship tokens off the board to gain a command point. Each player starts with either a fleet of four Federation ships or four Klingon ships. During the game you can spend your hard earned dilithium crystals on acquiring new star ships. You don’t have to stick to one faction though, you can purchase any of the four ships available. Klingon, Federation, or even non-aligned ships like Romulans or even Species 8472. The more ships you have the more flicking you can do. But aware of asteroid blocks that opponents might place to protect their ships. In a 2 or 4 player game the board will have 1 large planet in the center that gives command points and two smaller planets that will give dilithium crystals. The 3 player side has the large planet in the center, but has 3 dilithium planets. If you have any collector ships resting on any of the planets at the start of your turn you will gain one of the appropriate items. Once a player accumulates 10 Command points each other player takes a final turn and the player with the most points wins.

The game is a nice departure from the more thinking strategic games that normally have the Star Trek theme applied to them. Instead of trying to negotiate treaties or roll dice to attack ships, you’re literally flicking your ships to attack other ships. There is something giddy and fun about the physicality of sending your starships sailing across the table into the Neutral zone, bashing into other ships, and usually flying off the other side of the board. While the game itself is fun, especially for kids as my 6-year-old quickly became a flicking expert, Star Trek fans will immediately find the cracks in immersion. First off, they advertise the Enterprise D on the box, but the only Enterprise ship disc is the Enterprise E. You’ll find your other favorite Federation and Klingon starships like the Defiant and Voyager, which makes you think the time setting for the game is late 24th century. Circa Insurrection or Nemesis. But then they also included ships like the Reliant and Qonos One. The other theme breaking is that you don’t need to stick to one faction. You may start with an all Federation or Klingon fleet, but you can purchase any available ship to add to your armada. So unless you want to sacrifice strategy for theme, you’re probably going to have an allied fleet. And it’s hard to immerse yourself in a situation where you’re knocking out your opponent's Federation ship with your own, while your Undine Bio-ship is collecting command points.

The game is solid fun. And if you can get past those seemingly minor canon flaws you should definitely head to your friendly local gaming store and pick up a copy. Star Trek: Conflick in the Neutral zone is for 2 - 4 players, suggested age range of 14 and up, and plays in about 30 - 50 minutes, depending on the number of players

Of course, as always, before we wrap up the show, we’ll open hailing frequencies for your incoming messages!

How, if at all, did the Grand Nagus affect your opinion of the Ferengi?

Gersha Phillips on Star Trek Design

This week, Star Trek.com advertised the final days of Star Trek: Discovery’s Paley Center exhibit - Fight for the Future - by speaking with Costume Designer Gersha Phillips.

In the 4 minute, 43 second video, Phillips spoke about re-designing the Talosians “The Talosians were a really cool species that we got to do, reimagining them from the TOS and the Original Pilot. My first design, one of the notes I got from Alex [Kurtzman]was to try to look at the original things and revamp them. So I did my very first design, one of the notes that I got from Alex [Kurtzman] was to try to look at the original things and revamp them. So I did my very first design, and he actually threw back to me and said ‘Can I go a little bit further and do what you do?’

Star Trek’s costume designer also discussed the Red Angel suit, sighting Scarlett Johansen’s “Ghost in the Shell” costume as inspiration. She continued, saying “When we were given the task, Mario [Moreira] came up with this idea of the propellor wings that would push her through time [...] and we had this whole other idea where we were gonna build - it was gonna be a pod - and then the angel suit would come out of the pod. [...] When we were first given it, it was said that the suit was a thousand years in the future, and then it turned out to be a suit that her mom was wearing from the past

Wallace Shawn Remembers the Grand Nagus

Can you imagine the Ferengi without their Grand Nagus? The thought is inconceivable!  The capitalist species could have fallen victim to any number of classic blunders. The most famous of which is 'never get involved in a land war in Asia,' but only slightly less well known is...well, it doesn’t matter!

What we’re REALLY talking about is the incomparable Wallace Shawn, and his portrayal of Top-Ferengi - Grand Nagus Zek. This week, the 75 year old New York native sat down with Star Trek.com to talk about his time on Deep Space Nine. Shawn told the site that he had never owned a television and only saw pieces of Star Trek: The Next Generation when in hotel rooms, but he was impressed ”I always thought, “Wow, the cinematography is so great and it's so interesting-looking, with these interesting-looking people and creatures.” So, when I was asked to do DS9, I was thrilled. I loved the idea.

Shawn also had kind words about Star Trek’s fans, telling StarTrek.com “Star Trek fans are a particular group. They're very distinctive as people. There seem to be no evil Star Trek fans. They're a distinctly goodhearted group of people [...]. It's an interesting group of people.

Trek the Stars with “Antique Roadshow”

If you like history, reality TV, or are just REALLY jonesing for some new small screen Star Trek representation, PBS might have something for you.

This week, the long-running appraisal series - “Antique Roadshow” - is setting its sights on outer space. The episode, titled “Out of This World”, is part of PBS’ “Summer of Space” promotion, and will feature signed memorabilia from Emilia Earhart, John Glenn, and Neil Armstrong - as well as production pieces from Star Trek!

TV Guide’s description of season 23’s 19th episode reads “Space-themed treasures are featured, including NASA Space Program autographed photos; a 1737 celestial and terrestrial atlas; and a Star Trek treatment, script, and letters.

The Chicago Tribune also posted an interview with long-time “Antique Roadshow”  appraiser, Leila Dunbar.

Sir Wilfrid Laurier’s #SpockingFives

Sir Wilfrid Laurier...are you out of your VULCAN MIND?!?

Who is Sir Wilfrid Laurier, you may be asking?  Well, he is the first French-Canadian prime minister of the Dominion of Canada and the face of Canada’s Five Dollar Bill - and he is being transformed into our beloved Mr. Spock.

In a trend that is currently accompanying the hashtag SpockingFives, budding Canadian artists are drawing pointy ears, slanted eyebrows, and Star Fleet Deltas on the Canadian five dollar bill, turning the Former Prime Minister into a Vulcan first officer.

While the act is technically NOT illegal, the Bank of Canada warnsthere are important reasons why it should not be done. Writing on a bank note may interfere with the security features and reduces its lifespan. Markings on a note may also prevent it from being accepted in a transaction. Furthermore, the Bank of Canada feels that writing and markings on bank notes are inappropriate as they are a symbol of our country and a source of national pride.

Michael Chabon Named “Star Trek: Picard” Showrunner

We may not know if Jean-Luc Picard will take command of a Starfleet vessel in the upcoming series - “Star Trek: Picard” - but we DO know who will take command of showrunning duties. Michael Chabon.

The 56-year old American born Chabon is a pulitzer prize winning author with experience in screenwriting, including his work on “Star Trek: Discovery’s” Short Trek, “Calypso”. In a press release, Star Trek Franchise Head Alex Kurtzman said //QUOTE//Daring, lyrical, humane, whimsical, celebrated: words that describe both Jean-Luc Picard and the literary genius of Michael Chabon. Despite a laundry list of accomplishments most writers only dream of, Michael shines with the heart and soul of a Trekkie who’s finally found his dream job. We’re so fortunate to have him at the helm as we explore this next chapter in the great captain’s life.//END QUOTE//

Chabon continued //QUOTE//Star Trek has been an important part of my way of thinking about the world, the future, human nature, storytelling and myself since I was ten years old. I come to work every day in a state of joy and awe at having been entrusted with the character and the world of Jean-Luc Picard, with this vibrant strand of the rich, intricate and complex tapestry that is Trek.//END QUOTE//

Star Trek Plans on Making a Splash at SDCC

Convention season is upon us, and though Star Trek Las Vegas holds a special place in our Trekkie hearts, there is no denying that the big kahuna of the Convention season is San Diego Comic Con. But there’s no need to be jealous, because our beloved series is set to invade San Diego Comic Con 50 with it’s”Star Trek Universe”  campaign.

Star Trek will take over the prestigious Hall “H” for an hour and a half - 11:30AM to 1:00PM - on Saturday, July 20th! Kicking off the three half-hour panels is the cast of Star Trek: Discovery.  Moderated by Comedian-Actress Tig Notaro - Discovery’s Jet Reno - the panel will include series lead Sonequa Martin-Green, and executive producers Alex Kurtzman, Michelle Paradise and Heather Kaydin. Next up is Star Trek: Lower Decks, the animated comedy from “TNG Season 8” creator and “Ricky and Morty” Showrunner Mike McMahon. StarTrek.com teases the possibility of a special guest or two, as well as a “First Look” at the upcoming series. Finishing off the take-over is Sir Patrick Stewart and the cast of Star Trek: Picard. Joining the on-screen talent will be executive producers Alex Kurtzman, Michael Shaybon, Akiva Goldsman and Heather Kadin.

But SDCC isn’t just about panels, Star Trek: Universe is taking to the floor as well. From the “Star Trek: Discovery” interactive transporter experience - which will allow you to board the Discovery - to the “Jean-Luc Picard: The First Duty” exhibit - which will feature uniforms and props from TNG and “Star Trek: Picard”, there’ll be plenty of Star Trek to experience.

Finally, if collectables are your thing, the Star Trek Universe has something for you too. From StarTrek.com //QUOTE//All week long a Starfleet Headquarters visitors badge will be available for those who visit and complete the Star Trek transporter experience on the show floor. On Saturday afternoon and Sunday, a limited quantity of pins featuring the debut of two characters from the upcoming CBS All Access animated show Star Trek: Lower Decks will also be available from the Star Trek booth. At the Jean-Luc Picard: The First Duty museum experience at Michael J. Wolf Fine Arts, fans can get an exclusive replica pin of the Picard family crest as seen in Star Trek: Picard.//END QUOTE//

Rebecca Romijin and Ethan Peck Back. Short-ly

If you thought Rebecca Romijin’s time as Number One wasn’t LONG enough, or that Ethan Peck met the TALL order of playing Spock, and you wanted more - then you may be happy to hear that they’re likely getting their own SHORT Trek!

On May 30th, Writer/Director/Producer Mark Pellington posted an Instagram photo of a Star Trek Discovery Director’s Clapboard with the title “Chaos Theory”, along with the message//QUOTE//Goodbye Toronto. Thanks for an amazing crew and adventure//END QUOTE//. Pellington followed up with a second Instagram photo of himself, on June 30th, flanked by Rebecca Romijin and Ethan Peck, posting //QUOTE//Romijn, Pellington, Peck. Trek Shorts. #chabon #trek #rebeccaromijin #ethan//END QUOTE//

While the story, brought to light by Trekmovie.com on June 23rd, may not definitively verify a Spock/Number One Short Trek, the evidence certainly points to “MORE-THAN-LIKELY”

Variety’s Showrunner Panel - Michelle Paradise

On June 15th, Variety posted a drama panel discussion - A Night in the Writer’s Room - which featured show runners from some of entertainments biggest programs; including “Good Girls”, “The Walking Dead”,”Ozark”,and “Star Trek: Discovery”

Michelle Paradise represented the CBS All Access Science Fiction Franchise, and had some interesting insight into Star Trek’s writers room. On the topic of how disagreements are handled, Paradise said //QUOTE//Sometimes, on our show, we find that if someone has a reason for bumping so strongly on something, that there is something we really do need to look at. In Sci-Fi, you can have space and aliens and all sorts of things like that, but it always represents what’s actually happening HERE, and what’s happening in society, and what’s happening culturally. And so if someone is really bumping on something, it may be that there is an angle that the rest of us in the room aren’t quite seeing yet//END QUOTE//

On the difference between having a show written before filming and writing a show in the process of filming, Paradise reflected on her time on Ex’s and Oh’s - a show written before filming - and Star Trek: Discovery which writes during production, saying //QUOTE//It’s just tricky. It just makes for a lot of balancing. We try to write as many episodes as we can [...] but inevitably you have to start shooting. And then inevitably, as your doing that, time in the room slows down and then you’re trying to catch up and trying to keep ahead of the train that is coming - right for your face.//END QUOTE//

Marina Sirtis Talks Deanna

On the day of this recording, June 25th 2019, Marina Sirtis will make her West End debut in the comedy “Dark Sublime”. She spoke with Digital Spy about the production - and of course - Star Trek.

Sirtis was asked about “Star Trek: Picard”, and her involvement with the production, to which she reiterated previous statements //QUOTE//If they ask me, I would love to be in it. But I have to be honest, the phone hasn't rung yet, so I'm not holding my breath. But I'd love to do it – as long as I don't have to wear that spacesuit again, because I've put on a bit of weight since then, and I don't fancy going to the fat farm to lose it all again!//END QUOTE//

On the possibility of her own TROI Spin-off, Sirtis replied //QUOTE//To be honest, I don't think there's ever going to be a Troi spinoff. I don't think that's going to happen.[...] The reason I'd love to do it is not just because I'd like to resuscitate Troi, because actually I've played her. As far as an acting challenge goes, it's not one, really. I've played her for so long. But I'd just love to work with my mates again, because that was the best time of my life.//END QUOTE//

When asked who she would cast as Troi, Sirtis told Digital Spy //QUOTE//I think Mila Kunis would make a good Deanna Troi. I think she's a lovely actress. She's got the right kind of look, and that wouldn't be too much of a stretch for her to play that part.//END QUOTE//

THIS WEEK IN STAR TREK HISTORY

This week in Star Trek history, we travel to the year 1991 to watch Mr Robot Gleam the Cube in a Will Scarlet-Red uniform.

On June 21, 1991, Christian Michael Leonard Hawkins got his Star Trek break, filming as an unnamed Excelsior Communications Officer in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. The then-21 year old actor, a life-long trekkie, got the part thanks to his mother - casting director Mary-Jo Slater - and was better known by his stage name...Christian Slater.

Despite this being his first on-screen role with the franchise, Slater had connections to Star Trek prior to the cameo. Slater’s godfather, Michael Zaslow, played science officer Darnell, the first dead crewman in Star Trek history. Zaslow later had a role in TOS’s second season episode, “Mudd’s Women”.

Early in his career, Slater teased an interviewer that his signature eyebrows were due to the fact that he had shaved them to look like Mr. Spock, and they hadn’t been right since. The actor admitted later, though, that he regretted the joke, saying people still ask him about the "Halloween costume gone bad".

In regards to “The Undiscovered Country”, Slater’s credit, “unnamed Excelsior Communications Officer”, was the same credit given to former-Star Trek Yeoman Grace Lee Whitney and, in the novelization of the film, Slater’s would-be scene was given to Whitney’s character.

In a 2017 Interview with Graham Norton, Slater talked about his time on set, and admitted to stealing the uniform he wore in his scene //QUOTE//I stole the costume, by the way. I have it in a box somewhere. It was William Shatner's costume from Star Trek II, actually//END QUOTE//.

You’ll get to experience the events that brought them both to the first episode of Star Trek: Discovery, and you’ll get to be a part of the story alongside them.//END QUOTE//

Top Tip

Bailing, Brah

You’re on Risa, you’ve got a quiver of the best boards, and you’ve been hitting the waves. It’s glassy and you are ready to drop in and go off, brah. Well young grommet, the Powerboard Race can get choppy.

A common trap some of us fall into is overshooting the finish flag, fin chopping our first place finish into a runner up defeat. If you find it near impossible NOT to overshoot the flag, or lag has made it difficult to time the activation properly, the simplest solution is to bail off the board. Here’s how - First, drop the board in your hot bar. To make it easy, assign the board to the position in the tray that activates when the number “1” is depressed. Next, race your way to the finish line! Prior to crossing, aim your board directly at your flag. If you are neck and neck with another racer - and are not confident that you can pull off the maneuver YET - aim for the next highest flag. As you approach the flag and cross the finish line, hit the “1” key. This will remove your board, slowing you down but giving you more control of your character! Continue to move towards the flag if you are too far away. Step 4, hit f until the flag is yours! Finally, celebrate with an emote! This may take a while to perfect, but it will help if you have consistent trouble overshooting the flag!

Surfs up, Dudes!

Trekking Out the Big Apple

By Elio Lleo

Convention season is in full swing and New York Comic Con is next. Starting October 7th and ending October 10th, this four day event usually has stuff for everyone! Unique to this year’s presentation is hybrid participation: not only are organizers reducing the total number of attendees, you can also purchase a virtual ticket that will give you access to some of the panels right from the comfort of your own home.

But what’s so special about NYCC? As of right now, Paramount+ is slated to present at least two panels: on Saturday, October 9th at 12:45pm the cast and producers of Star Trek: Discovery take the Empire Stage. Wilson Cruz Harassed During Star Trek Day

By Elio Lleo

When it comes to communities, even Star Trek’s can be incredibly divisive. The majority of the time, it’s about NuTrek vs older Trek, who the better first officer is, or which ship is cooler. However, there are times when things can get dark and people start to show their true colors–like one fan who was offered the privilege of attending the Star Trek Day celebrations in person. Long story short, at one point during the event, while Wilson Cruz was on stage, someone in the audience yield out a homophobic slur. According to reports, no one did anything about it. The guest was not removed nor have they been identified (yet). With incredible grace and patience, Wilson continued on and later took to Twitter to address the matter.

https://twitter.com/wcruz73/status/1436333680880934927

Although he may not have wanted to draw so much attention to the matter, we want to take a moment to remind you–our listeners–that tolerance for the bigoted has its limits. When you see something, say something. Learn ways on how to be the best ally you can be for people who are marginalized on a daily basis. If you’re on social media and someone goes on a hate-filled rant, step up. It’s the inaction of those with the means to stand up to injustices that empower those who want to watch the world burn.

IP Theft, the Sincerest Form of Flattery

By Cat Hough

On Monday, we were treated to the big uniform reveal by General Jay Raymond, Chief of Space Operations for Space Force who tweeted, "Every winning team needs a uniform!.I’m excited to share the new look with you today." And to no one’s surprise, the Twitterverse immediately noticed some striking similarities to some other uniforms that we are quite familiar with. They were described by one person as "a blend of the Star Trek Enterprise dress uniform, but with the Mirror Universe diagonal."

https://twitter.com/SpaceForceCSO/status/1440323962697752590 [I am voluntarily putting this into my own shownotes for your edification, dear listener. You owe me.–Ed.]

Josh Weinstein, a veteran writer for The Simpsons and Futurama, said the uniform reminded him of the ridiculously tight outfits worn by Zapp Brannigan; Movies in Focus hopped on the satirical bandwagon with the image of an Imperial Star Destroyer officer from the original Star Wars trilogy. "These new Space Force uniforms are looking great," jokes the caption.

PSA: She Canna Take Any More, Cap’ns!

By Thomas Reynolds

To every thing there is a season–and in Cryptic’s opinion, the season for Windows 7 is long past. Starting February 15, 2022, anyone still using the 10-year-old OS (seriously, not even Microsoft supports it anymore) won’t be able to patch or log into STO and Neverwinter. Only Windows 8 and 10 (with the superior 64-bit intellect) will have a home on the final frontier. DirectX 10 support is also getting ejected like a spent warp core on February 15th, with both games requiring Feature Level 11 or higher. That means your computer needs to have one of the following video card chipsets to play:

  • NVidia GeForce GTX 400 or better
  • ATI/AMD Radeon HD 5000 or better
  • Intel HD Graphics 4000 or better

Given all the fun and excitement of buying graphics cards these days, if your current card isn’t up to the task...well, godspeed.

Aux2Bat Gets Boimed Out

By Thomas Reynolds

The aqueduct, the magnetic compass, the Aux2Bat. All of these simple technologies have withstood the test of time, but the last may be the most miraculous. Needing only three Technician doffs and one boff ability at minimum, the Aux2Bat ship build is easy to assemble, trivial to fly, and still keeps your bridge officers ready for whatever space wizardry you demand of them. Sure, it hasn’t been the meta in a sehlat’s age, but you know what? Aux2Bat does the job, it does it pretty well, and that’s pretty much all we ask...until now.

Ever drop a Gravity Well, and notice your Tyken’s Rift is now off-limits for 15 seconds? That’s the Shared Category Cooldown kicking in, forcing you to pace yourself rather than let everything rip at once. When Cryptic first released the Boimler Effect trait, it provided a 2.5% percent chance of resetting every bridge officer ability to its Shared Category Cooldown, whenever you used a non-specialist boff ability. Great in theory, but one-in-forty odds just aren’t worth a 200 Lobi investment.

Yeah, that's was also our reaction. Image: ViacomCBS, via TrekZone.de

So Cryptic did a little tweaking, like you do, and made it a 17.5% percent proc chance instead. As STO streamer @AugmentedDG declared on Twitter, “Boimler Effect is now as good as Aux2Bat...for cooldown reduction.” Bold words, to be sure, but there’s also a fairly convincing clip of him keeping eight of his escort’s twelve boff abilities concurrently running like an overambitious plate spinner. Trek out the tweet, scrape together that Lobi, and give your boffs more buffer time than they can handle.

Is there in Screen Accuracy No Beauty?

By Thomas Reynolds

One of Trek cosplay’s hallmarks is its hair-splitting fidelity to what’s seen on screen, even when the creators themselves don’t quite pull it off. Combine that tendency with STO’s promise of personal immersion, and it’s no surprise that some players want their captain’s threads to look “correct.” To help make that a little easier, Cryptic released official in-game color guides for both the newly-available Lower Decks Starfleet jacket, and their original Khitomer uniform creation. However, rapturous Space Barbie enthusiasts should make sure they’re using the second released Khitomer guide, as the first one had incorrect pant color codes.

The Sally Ride, the Ross, and You

By Shane Hoover

If you were a fan of the Star Trek Adventures web series “Shield of Tomorrow” or “Clear Skies”, you’re already familiar with the dangers and wonders of the Shackleton Expanse. If you weren’t, then be prepared for deadly spatial phenomena, ancient alien technologies, first contact with new species and lots of boldly going. It’s all there in Modiphius Entertainment’s newest STA sourcebook, the Shackleton Expanse Campaign Guide. The new sourcebook is available for preorder at $60 now and is expected to ship in December 2021. This is your tabletop gaming crew’s chance to follow in the warp trails of the U.S.S. Sally Ride and the U.S.S. Ross. Adventure into a nearly uncharted region of space beyond Federation, Klingon and Romulan borders.

Image: Modiphius Entertainment.

The new material includes five new playable alien species for STA including Orions. It also includes NPCs from Starbase 364 and around the Expanse, as well as stats for “hero” and NPC vessels. This sourcebook does require a copy of the Star Trek Adventures core rulebook, which is provided in PDF form with your order.

The Ar-mod-a Returns

By Thomas Reynolds

Maybe 2000 feels like a long time ago to you, maybe it doesn’t. Either way, the Star Trek: Armada and Armada II RTS games that came out then still hold a place in certain PC players’ hearts. So much, in fact, that the Stellar Parallax modding group has finally released what Activision would not: Star Trek: Armada III. Starting as a one-person passion project back in 2012, Armada III is a full-conversion mod for 2012’s Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion. Stellar Parallax’s devoted faithful can now command the Federation, Klingons, Romulans, Borg, or Cardassian Union at the beginning of the Dominion War.

See, Kurtzman? You can have more than one kind of ship in a fleet. Image: Stellar Parallax.

But really, how much demand is there for a nine-year-old game mod, following up on a twenty-year-old series? After its September 10th release, Armada III is the 51st most-popular mod on the ModDB site, out of over 46,000 entries across hundreds of games–so we’d say “a lot.” [Update: #21 as of publication. Star Trek Wins at the Emmys

By Elio Lleo

On the heels of the Star Trek Day event, the franchise had cause for more celebration. During the two-day Creative Arts Emmy Event this last week, Star Trek walked away with two wins. First up, an Outstanding Special Visual Effects in a Single episode for Star Trek: Discovery’s Season 3, “Su’kal.” Then, Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup For A Series for the Discovery episode, “If Memory Serves.” Now, Star Trek has been nominated for a total of 10 Emmys and the 75th Annual Awards show is set to air on Sunday, September 19th on CBS. So, let’s keep our fingers crossed that Star Trek takes home several more!

Praise the Word of Rod

By Elio Lleo

As Gene Roddenberry’s centennial celebrations continue, his son and CEO of Roddenberry Entertainment, Rod Roddenberry, spoke with Forbes’s Simon Thompson about the last 55 years and the future of Star Trek. With the first four original movies being remastered in 4K UHD, Rod remarks about how great it is to see how there’s still a hunger for the original incarnations of Trek, saying:

I think it makes Star Trek new again, especially for our new audiences. You’ve got the TV series now that has brought in a newer, younger demographic, and I think some people are resistant to look at older stuff. When it comes out in 4K, it looks fresh and new. I’m excited by them being introduced to Star Trek through the original movies.

...oh, UNITY, that's what the shirt says. Image: Paramount Pictures, via Forbes.

What about NuTrek? Well, for Rod, it’s all about ensuring that any of the recent incarnations stay true to the core of what his father’s vision was all about saying:

He wants people like J.J. Abrams and Alex Kurtzman and others to come along and do that. He also wanted to make sure that it remains Star Trek… [a]s long as they are continuing the tradition and the idea of it making you think. Having it entertain is extremely important, absolutely, but let’s be considering different points of view on this as well.

Rod goes on to discuss his own personal history with the franchise and how it was he grew to be so invested in his father’s legacy.

What Escapes In Vegas...Stays In...Hmmm…

By Cat Hough

If you’re headed to Vegas anytime soon, you should definitely trek out the new Star Trek: Discovery-themed escape room launched by Escapology. The game is set during the third season of Discovery and has opened just in time to coincide with the 4th season premiere on Paramount+.

https://player.vimeo.com/video/599794944/

Your role in the game is acting as a civilian engineer tasked with inspecting the U.S.S. Discovery NCC-1031 as it undergoes the refit and upgrade to the 1031-A. However, sci-fi things happen during your inspection and Discovery collides with a quantum filament, causing major hull damage. The filaments' quantum resonance has also caused a polarity shift in the antimatter containment system, leading to a progressive degeneration in the containment field. If field strength falls below 15%, it will collapse, destroying the vessel and everyone aboard.

Because sci-fi stuff happened, the main computer has closed emergency bulkheads across the ship and the turbolift control system has been disabled, leaving the bulk of the crew trapped and unable to begin repairs. In a convenient turn of events, your turbolift stopped near the Auxiliary Control section, so all you have to do is override its systems. At this point, you’re the best option for helping Discovery and its crew avoid this disaster.

Another reason to hate this design. Image: ViacomCBS, via CBR.

Then, you, and your team, must escape the turbolift and communicate with a senior officer. You can save everyone if you can just re-establish communications and work together to repair the antimatter containment field before the strength falls below 15% which is projected to be in precisely 60 minutes time. Or that’s how long you can book the room for: packages can be reserved at the Las Vegas Town Square location via the Escapology website and they currently show the price for 6 people is a little under $250.

Festivity Will Now Commence

By Thomas Reynolds and Rosco McQueen

It’s practically cliché at this point: the commercial Christmas season starts earlier every year, with candy canes and carols drowning out the trick-or-treaters and turkey dinners. But...what if December isn’t merely encroaching on the other months? Isn’t Christmas adding their celebrational distinctiveness to its own? Are they not being adapted to service Saint Nick? Yes, Christmas is assimilating the calendarand your holidays, as they have been, are over.

The Elf on the Shelf was the first to fall to the Collective; the angel tree topper is next. Image: Eaglemoss.

Festivity may be irrelevant, but that hasn’t stopped Eaglemoss from creating a grim messenger of holiday cheer.  Invading Sector 001 on September 30th, the Borg Cube Advent Calendar brings 24 Trek accessories and gifts to all good little Trekkies. Socks, coasters, coffee mugs: each item included in the box also includes a short note with trivia and stories behind it. The Calendar sells for a considerable $149.95, so your bank account might look like New Providence if there’s more than one Trekkie on your gift list.

However, if you’re after something a bit less “Sovereign-class”, then the California line of starships may be more your style.  Eaglemoss has revealed the new XL model of the USS Cerritos.  The model is 9.75” long and faithfully reproduces the Cerritos as it appeared in the first season. It’s due in January 2022, so not quite in time for Christmas, but it will soon be joined by a model of the U.S.S. Titan.

Both models were made using the actual VFX files used in Lower Decks, with both ships looking a little more animated than the usual line of starshipslike they could have leapt from the screen to your living room.

A Fanatical Devotion to Charity

By Shane Hoover

It’s policy here at Priority One that we love charity bundles (and if it isn’t, it should be). The latest effort from STO and Fanatical.com is no exception. Following the familiar format, players can select one of two reward tiers based on their donated amount:

  • Tier 1 - $1 ($15 value)
    • 32c Vanity Shield Overlay
    • Rainbow Risian Caracal
    •  ‘Charitable’ title
  • Tier 2 - $7.99     ($82 value)
    • All items from Tier 1
    • Narendra-class Support Cruiser (T6)
    • Vor'ral Support Battlecruiser (T6)
    • 1 Fleet Ship Module
    • 1 Gold Tech Upgrade
    • 30 Lobi Crystals

Rarely is it this easy to support the needs of the many. Image: Fanatical.

But the benefits don’t stay in-game: each purchase of any tier in the bundle earns you a chance to win the Grand Prize! Tier 1 purchases earn a single Grand prize entry, while Tier 2 purchases net you five entries. The winner gets a place on Star Trek: The Cruise V, a ticket worth over $5000. I don’t know if God needs a cruise ship, but I sure wouldn’t mind getting on this one. The winner also receives a digital copy of every expansion pack available for Star Trek Online. That’s Legacy of Romulus, Delta Operations, Temporal Agent, Gamma Vanguard and Discovery Operations. All told, that’s over $720 worth of STO goodies. You can also get one free entry into the Grand Prize drawing by visiting a link which requires you to sign up for the Fanatical newsletter.

Nearly 90% of the sales price on these charity bundle items will benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, providing children with safe and fun places to grow and thrive, and offering mentoring life-enhancing programs.

STO Takes Another Hard Look In the Mirror

By Rosco McQueen

With the conclusion of the Klingon Civil War, you would think Starfleet and members of the Alliance would have time for a little bit of exploration in Star Trek Online. Think again!!  As a mirror universe admiral once said, “You haven’t seen the last of me!”

https://youtu.be/krG7YUY9JNw

This newfound peace is short lived, as a new danger emerges from the Mirror Universe. A former enemy, Admiral Leeta (voiced by Star Trek: Deep Space Nine star Chase Masterson) is being hunted by the Mirror Universe’s Kuumarke, a Terran Empire special agent. Players will team up with Admiral Leeta to stop Kuumarke and her Terran forces from using stolen information to bring destruction to the Prime Universe.

Captains can investigate this looming threat in a new featured episode, Firewall, as well as participate in a new ground TFO, “Operation: Wolf.” Captains can also earn daily progress by playing the “Counterpoint” TFO and the episode “Jabberwocky” to work towards claiming the brand new T6 Mirror Gagarin-class Miracle Worker Battlecruiser.  It’s worth noting the first Captain on your account to claim the ship also receives 8x Terran Empire Agony Phaser Weapon Packs which each contain your choice of starship weapon type, and 3x Ultimate Tech Upgrade - Beam/Cannon/Projectile Tech which may be used to upgrade any starship weaponry

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XlkM4MrvSR0&feature=emb_title

The new Terran ship has a 4 forward, and 4 aft weapon layout, compared to the regular 5/3 layout of the Prime Gagarin. It features a Lieutenant Commander Command Specialist Bridge Officer seat, and a universal console - the Destructive Protomatter Wave Projector.  The wave projector targets multiple vessels, ripping apart their hulls. If they are destroyed then they send out a secondary shockwave, which may infect other targets in a chain reaction.

Carriers With Crossover Appeal

By Thomas Reynolds

For years, STO was a preeminent source for new Trek storiesand what’s a new Trek story without a ship? Cryptic’s designs helped progress the post-Nemesis state of shipbuilding art, establishing distinct aesthetics for a modern 25th century. Now 2021’s a different scene, with five different television series and other MMOs generating new ships of their own. That said, STO’s contributions aren’t going unnoticed.

Yes. It's a cat carrier. Good job. Image: Cryptic Studios.

The Continuing Mission blog for Star Trek Adventures recently posted fan-made guidelines for bringing Cryptic’s Atrox- and Aspero-class carriers into the tabletop world. The unofficial STO-to-STA ship conversion assigns stats and traits based on their online counterparts, so you can drag-and-drop them into your campaign. It’s an interesting look at RPG mechanic design, if that’s your thing (and if you’re listening to this podcast, that’s a pretty safe guess). But it also reflects Cryptic’s success in creating ships that become Trek characters in their own right.

Quick Gaming News Roundup

  • With Reflections taking us back into the Mirror Universe, STO’s original ships are getting some fresh new looks--looks that could kill, that is. Ten of Cryptic’s 25th century Federation designs, including the fan-favorite Pathfinder, have been touched up for the new arc, ranging from new materials to full-blown remasters.
  • The Terran Empire is also getting their own versions of four shipsthe Shran, Reliant, Andromeda, and Pathfinderdressed to impress and distress. For fans of STO’s story blog posts, this was all related in a private communique from Vice Admiral Hemphill of Starfleet. Or is it Lord Baron Vice Admiral of Starfleet? The answer: yes.
  • If you launch STO through the Epic Games launcher - or if you want to get a free Terran Incursion Pack that includes a Terran Empire Sonic Phaser Stun Pistol, an Elite Services Starter Pack and a Small XP Boost, then you’d need to download the game and launch through Epic Games. The pack can be claimed once per account, all items are bound to account and you must complete the tutorial in order to claim it.

55 Years Of Trekking Across The Universe

By Cat Hough

This week marks the 55th anniversary of the airing of the first episode of Star Trek and, according to all the memes going around, the world has never been the same. But when you think about it...that’s a pretty accurate statement. Without the vision of Gene Roddenberry and the production of the original series, we would not even have this podcast. So let’s just take this opportunity to appreciate the reason we are even here today.

Fresh New Faces For Strange New Worlds

By Rosco McQueen

There’s no trailer yet, but we were treated to an introduction to the crew of the Enterprise under Captain Pike, with some new faces and some familiar ones as well. We are reintroduced to Anson Mount, Ethan Peck and Rebecca Romijn who reprise their roles as Captain Pike, Mr Spock and Number One.  From there we meet the new actors taking on classic characters, with:

  • Celia Rose Gooding as Cadet Nyota Uhura,
  • Jess Bush as Nurse Christine Chapel,
  • And Babs Olusanmokun as Dr. M’Benga.

New characters then come our way:

  • Bruce Horak as Hemmer,
  • Christina Chong as La’an Noonien-Singh,
  • And Melissa Navia as Lt. Erica Ortegas

Shadows Of Things That Will Be

By Cat Hough

Let’s break down the Picard Season Two trailer. We see Q snap his fingers and send everyone into an alternate reality where Earth has descended into a totalitarian state. But only Jean-Luc Picard and his new crew (maybe with Guinan’s help?) know that time has been altered. Then they decide to travel back to modern day Los Angeles in order to get things sorted. To get there, however, they need the assistance of the Borg Queen, played by Annie Wersching--who, in this alternate reality, appears to be a captive on Earth. What else is in store for Picard? We don’t know yet, but we do know he’ll be back in February 2022; it was also confirmed that Picard was renewed for Season 3.

But Will We Learn The Janeway Maneuver?

By Cat Hough

We also got a first real look at Prodigy as the first official trailer was introduced by Kate Mulgrew. This panel also included a pleasant surprise: the show will premiere on October 28 and the first episode is an hour long. The trailer shows us the crew of young aliens who happen to find an experimental Federation starship named the U.S.S. Protostar, but they’ve never heard of Starfleet or the Federation. So it’s up to Janeway’s hologram to teach them how to use the ship to navigate the cosmos, while the Diviner (John Noble) and Drednok (Jimmi Simpson) pursue the crew to get ahold of the ship.

Lower Decks Hits The Halfway Mark

By Cat Hough

After a hilarious and thoroughly enjoyable first half of the season, Lower Decks continues it’s second season with more adventure, more exploration, and lots more sci-fi stuff. The second-season trailer (that series creator Mike McMahon says he edited to remove spoilers) gives us glimpses of Rutherford vs "fricking radiation," Tendi as a giant bug, and Mariner and Boimler on an away mission that goes sideways [...so like every other away mission, then---Ed.].

Looking Four-ward To Discovery

By Cat Hough

The fourth season of Star Trek: Discovery premieres Thursday, Nov. 18, on Paramount+. The first image from the upcoming season was released during Star Trek Day. We also got to watch a panel featuring season four cast members Wilson Cruz (Dr. Hugh Culber), Blu del Barrio (Adira), Ian Alexander (Gray), and showrunner and executive producer Michelle Paradise. The panel of mutual love and discussion of found family was moderated by Wil Wheaton.

Taking Trek Back To School

By Thomas Reynolds and Rosco McQueen

With Labor Day on rearview sensors, the American student body is headed back to school–and so is the Trek franchise, if Kurtzman has his way. Back in Episode 519, we mentioned that a Starfleet Academy-situated series “aimed at younger audiences” was in the works. Since then, Eric Pesola at Heavy suggested that the new series concept is far older than it appears.

Don't worry, it's safe for them to wear red shirts because they're named characters. Image: IDW Comics, via Heavy.com.

Pesola draws parallels between JJ’s franchise “revival” in 2009, and Harve Bennett turning it around after The Motion Picture almost torpedoed it thirty years prior. Bennett helmed the next three series entries and more-or-less put Trek’s fortunes on the up-and-up. That said, after his Final Frontier almost finished it for good, Bennett pitched one more idea: a prequel film set at Starfleet Academy, with Ethan Hawke as Kirk and John Cusack as Spock.

The studio went with a thinly-veiled Cold War analogy instead but, twenty years later, class might finally be in session. During the Star Trek Day celebrations, Wil Wheaton asked Kurtzman about the future of Trek on TV, Kurtzman said that with five ongoing series, he’s “not in a hurry” to launch any more. But he did bring up the fan enthusiasm for a series set at Starfleet Academy.

Legends Of Yesterday

By Rosco McQueen

Fire up the phase inducers, it’s time to start a new ‘toon in Star Trek Online. The Agents of Yesterday recruitment event is active: new characters set in the TOS era playing through the entire Agents of Yesterday mission arc, and becoming Temporal Agents with updated rewards.  As we covered previously, if you haven't created a Temporal Agent character, it’s a great opportunity with lots of bonuses for your whole account.

You wish your family portrait looked this good. Image: Cryptic Studios.

But if the idea of leveling up a new character from scratch isn’t bringing you joy, then the Legendary TOS Federation Captain's Bundle has dropped to immediately boost your new character to level 65.  The pack comes with equipment, services, and other resources to allow this newly-boosted character to be ready to enter the high-level content of Star Trek Online. Plus, you’ll get account-wide access to the Legendary Miranda Multi-Mission Cruiser [T6]. It includes all of the consoles, starship traits, and costumes from the entire line of Miranda and Malachowski starship families. The bundle is available for the price of 12,000 Zen, with 50% OFF from September 8th at 8am PT to September 20th at 10am PT!

Parliament Is Now In Session

By Rosco McQueen

The next story arc is fast approaching, if this news item is anything to go by. STO announced this week that Lower Decks themed gear is making its way into the game. “Starting with the next story update which arrives on PC very soon, a brand new Tier-6 Starship will be added to the existing ship choices, and a series of exciting new Lower Decks-themed items will be added to the Lobi Crystal Store.”

The items include:

  • Lower Decks uniforms,
  • Portable Phaser Cannon
  • Multibarrel Phaser
  • Phaser Split-Beam Rifle
  • Phaser Sniper Rifle
  • T-88 Diagnostic Tool Kit frame - complete with purple stripe
  • Lower Decks Personal Traits, two space and two ground,
  • And a new starship, the Parliament Miracle Worker Surveyor Cruiser [T6].

Oof. Not looking forward to the environmental impact statement on this one. Image: Cryptic Studios.

The Parliament has a four front and four aft weapon layout, with a Controlled Gravimetric Demolition universal console, which deals “tremendous” kinetic damage. The console also provides a passive bonus to Kinetic and Physical Damage Resistance Rating, as well as Exotic Particle Generation and Structural Integrity. The items will be available for purchase upon the release of the next story update (no date confirmed as yet).

Operation: Sheep In Wolf’s Clothing

by Shane Hoover

A brand new blog from Cryptic has announced a forthcoming Mirror Universe TFO for Star Trek Online. The new bit of fiction finds Admiral Quinn providing feedback to Admiral Leeta on a new Starfleet training simulation to test special operations into the Mirror Universe. It seems despite her cooperation, Quinn finds her bloodlust a bit much even for a simulation. I mean honestly, if a Captain can’t use Exocomps as cannon fodder anymore what are you supposed to do? And just forget about bumping off your Terran counterpart, I guess! So much for Plan A, am I right?

What I've always loved about the Terran Empire: its understated subtlety. Image: Cryptic Studios.

Anyway, while details are obviously thin in this little teaser, it looks like Captains will get to beam their away team into a brand new Mirror Universe version of Earth Space Dock for some covert operations. So beef up those biceps, tone up those abs, and sharpen your daggers. We’re going Terran on the holodeck for “Operation: Wolf”!

They Belong In A Museum!

By Shane Hoover

It’s also worth noting that in celebration of Star Trek Day, from September 8 to 22, on all platforms, there will be a special Starfleet Museum in orbit above Deep Space Nine and Earth Space Dock. The museum contains the starring ships from Star Trek movies, television, and more. Hailing each ship will give you words from their crew, and both in universe and behind the scenes facts about the ship and show. Hailing all ten of the ships will grant you a special title: Historical Documents Expert.

Fleet Command Finishes TNG

By Thomas Reynolds

If TNG taught us anything, it’s that all good things must come to an end, and so it is in Star Trek Fleet Command. Patch 34 concludes Fleet Command’s first [nope, our bad—Ed.] foray into Prime Timeline storytelling, wrapping the TNG arc begun back in May while adding Tasha Yar to the officer roster. Meanwhile, your existing crew collection will gain Traits that boost the chance of Critical Success for Away Team assignments. And as for those assignments: as of Patch 34, assignments will automatically respawn once they are completed.

Star Trek Through Rose-Tinted GOGgles

By Thomas Reynolds and Rosco McQueen

Remember last week, when we said about a half-dozen vintage Trek games were going to be re-released on GOG Galaxy? Well they’re on GOG Galaxy now in time for Star Trek Day! In a release the company has confirmed the games have been updated so they run smoothly on Windows 10, with some even offering a working LAN multiplayer option.

I don't know what makes me feel older, the box art or the phrase "LAN multiplayer." Image: GOG.
