Antennas and Cables

The 11-meter band sits within the **high-frequency (HF)** spectrum, and its properties significantly affect the performance of CB radios. Frequencies within this range can travel through the ionosphere, especially during favorable atmospheric conditions, making **skip propagation** possible. Skip propagation allows signals to bounce off the ionosphere, potentially reaching hundreds of miles beyond their typical range.

However, not all conditions favor such long-distance communication. Atmospheric disturbances, solar cycles, and interference from other devices can limit the effective range of CB radios operating in the 11-meter band. For most users, this range averages between **1 to 15 miles**, depending on the terrain and other factors.

AM vs. SSB Modes: Performance and Usage

CB radios typically operate using one of two communication modes: **Amplitude Modulation (AM)** and **Single Sideband (SSB)**. Both have their advantages and trade-offs, impacting how CB users experience clarity, range, and performance.

AM (Amplitude Modulation)

The AM mode is the default communication method for most CB radios. It works by modulating the amplitude of the radio wave to carry the audio signal. AM is relatively simple in terms of technology and is favored by truckers and casual users for local communication. However, it has limitations, particularly in clarity and range.

AM transmissions are more susceptible to **noise interference** from electrical devices, power lines, and atmospheric conditions. The sound quality tends to degrade over longer distances, and the range can be limited, typically extending no further than **5 to 10 miles** in most conditions. While convenient for general communication, AM may not offer the performance needed for long-distance or emergency communication.

SSB (Single Sideband)

SSB mode offers a significant upgrade in performance, allowing CB users to achieve greater range and clarity. Unlike AM, which transmits a full signal that includes a carrier and both upper and lower sidebands, SSB transmits only one sideband (upper or lower), removing the carrier. This makes SSB more **efficient** in terms of power and bandwidth usage.

In practical terms, SSB can extend communication range by **50 to 100%** compared to AM, making it ideal for those who need to cover larger areas. It also provides clearer audio, especially in noisy or interference-prone environments. The trade-off, however, is that not all CB radios support SSB, and it requires more precise tuning for optimal performance.

FTA Satellite for Preppers?13 Aug 202400:18:31

FTA Satellite is not what it once was, but it's still a viable alternative to paid TV especially if you're interested in news with different views. In this episode Caleb discusses the benefits of FTA Satellite and why a prepper may consider adding it to their communications plan.

Although FTA satellite systems have largely faded from mainstream use, a small community of enthusiasts remains committed to preserving this technology. They emphasize its unique ability to access international programming, which has kept a niche audience engaged, particularly among those interested in content from different languages and cultures. For a time, this interest sustained the FTA community, but the rapid growth of streaming services soon eclipsed these efforts, pushing FTA further into obscurity.

While FTA satellites are no longer widely used, some hobbyists still refurbish old dishes and exchange knowledge online. These dedicated individuals continue to discover unencrypted feeds and network programming through FTA systems, even though the widespread availability of internet-based content has greatly diminished the demand for such technology.

Is there a place in your comms plan for FTA Satellite? For me? Yes.

Editors Note:

Attention. This program was recorded less than 24 hours before President Joe Biden announced he was giving up his re-election bid. This significant development suggests further changes are on the horizon. You are encouraged to Prepare your communications accordingly.

The past ten days have been nothing short of tumultuous. Honestly, I foresee even more chaos before we see any real calm. With that said, thank you for tuning in to this episode. Today, I jump into current events (against my wishes), including the Trump Rally Shooting and the CrowdStrike outage. Then we also explore the use of aviation scanners and a faithful listener (Craig) reminded me of that end of the spectrum ('scuse the pun).

Additionally, I discuss how your $20 walkie-talkie isn't truly a scanner but might suffice in a pinch. The $35 pawn shop scanner is still a better choice!

Remember, ScannerMaster remains the premier destination for all your scanner needs, and I'm here to assist with any questions you might have (VM/DM, email).

Scanner Radios - Peak Listening09 Jul 202400:19:14

Listening to scanner radios is fascinating and engaging. Whether you're new or experienced, the right police scanner can offer real-time info and fun. In this episode Caleb covers more of the need to know about scanner radios, from how they work to picking the best one- including the best place in the USA to buy one!

What Are Scanners?

A scanner is a radio receiver that quickly monitors ("scans") many channels. It lets you listen to two-way radio calls. Police, fire departments, and other services use these radios. They send short bursts of info on thousands of channels. Scanners help you follow these transmissions, giving a peek into local authorities and emergency services.

Types of Scanners Handheld Scanners

Handheld scanners are portable and let you monitor frequencies anywhere. They're great for listening from different places. Popular models often have rechargeable batteries, built-in antennas, and easy-to-use interfaces.

Base/Mobile Scanners

Base or mobile scanners are bigger and meant for fixed locations or vehicles. They usually offer more range and features than handheld models. These scanners are ideal for enthusiasts wanting a strong setup at home or in their car.

Digital Scanners

Digital scanners can decode digital signals, common in public safety communications. These are crucial if you want to listen to agencies using digital trunking.

Trunking Scanners

Trunking scanners follow conversations across multiple frequencies, key for modern, complex radio systems used by many public safety agencies. This tech ensures you don't miss any part of a conversation.

What to do if you just don't know what to do?

When unsure, consult experts at Scanner Master. They can guide you to the perfect scanner. Visit their website to learn more.

APRS: ALL About It! A HR360 Replay pt.120 Jun 202501:09:46

The listeners have spoken—so I'm breaking my own rules and releasing this episode out of sequence.

I've been getting a lot of APRS questions lately, and instead of trying to answer them all on Instagram or Facebook, I figured it was time to bring this one back.

This is a replay from the HamRadio 360 podcast, where I sat down with Kenneth W6KWF to talk about APRS—an old-school messaging system that works without any infrastructure. No cell towers, no Wi-Fi. Just radios doing what radios do best.

It's simple, powerful, and way too overlooked. If you're into emergency comms or prepping, APRS should be on your radar. Honestly, it's worth getting your ham license for this feature alone.

Enjoy the throwback—and check out more at prepcomms.com or dig through the full archive at hamradio360.com.

Hurricane Helene: AAR Upstate SC pt202 Nov 202400:27:08

After the storm, getting the generator going early and setting up the hand pump for the well made all the difference. A quick project with leftover well pump wire turned into a solid clothesline—an unexpected but handy addition that Carla LOVED. Through it all, AT&T held strong, and Starlink was exceptional. If you're interested, see below for a link featuring a free month for both you and me.

It felt like living a real-life episode of "Prep Comms." The ZBM2 Industries antennas are outta sight—thanks, Deric! While the local 2m repeater was down, it didn't hold us back; we had the gear ready, so radio wasn't top of my mind. That's one big lesson: when you've prepared well, the need for comms isn't a distraction, freeing you to focus on other tasks.

The WLN KDC1 handheld radios continue to be incredibly reliable and cost-effective, with GMRS as our go-to system for family comms. It's a perfect service that doesn't require any testing, making it ideal for family use. Though I used my ham radios sparingly, they came in handy for checking in on 40m HF (JS8Call) and daily Winlink check-ins over VHF Packet.

Just North of us the Mt. Mitchell Ham Repeater was a true lifeline, saving lives daily. Be sure to watch KM4ACK Jason's video, linked below, about the welfare nets on this repeater. Locally, our phones worked well, so ham radio took a backseat for us, though just 45 minutes away, it was a crucial lifesaver.

Brother-to-brother comms on CB were also reliable, showing that there's a role for every communication method. And while I stayed busy with work, the family stepped up; we learned countless lessons that we'll carry forward. Although some coax-internet is still down, Verizon failed most while ham radio absolutely shined across North Carolina. The BTech 6x2Pro proved essential for both farm and fire department communications.

This experience underscored the value of preparedness and inspired us to add an ECOFLOW 2700W solar generator to back up our primary generator. No matter where you're starting from, take that first step toward readiness. Don't be discouraged—I'm here to help!

That Simple Pump from Scott Hunt (Practical Preppers) was a true lifesaver, keeping water flowing through it all. Men, husbands, dads—let's get you started! Plan C Solutions and The Family Radio Guy are coming soon to help you and your family prepare for the upcoming unknown. And if you're looking for quality water filters, check out Hub City Mercantile for your Berkey replacement filters.

Hurricane Helene: AAR Upstate SC pt102 Nov 202400:25:59

Here's a timeline rundown from our Helene Prepping and Recovery

After preparing gas and propane midweek, we ensured all equipment was charged and ready. At 0400 on the 27th, my mini comm hub was active. By 0630, local repeaters went offline, and at 0730, we lost power. With severe winds raging, we canceled work, activated our generator at 0800, and monitored fire and ham bands on the BTech 6X2Pro. Once the rain subsided, we utilized the Simple Pump, though filling the tub beforehand had slipped my mind. We assessed farm damage, surveyed nearby areas, then focused on family, using GMRS almost exclusively. Around day 2, the local club activated the backup 2m repeater.

We quickly learned the importance of organizing supplies, checking on neighbors, and securing water for extended family. Thankfully, AT&T held steady, and Starlink was invaluable. Our generator was essential, though a wiring fix was needed post-storm. By Sunday, life resumed as near-normal, with only brief setbacks. Reports of coax internet still remain down. Fiber proved resilient yet delicate, and Verizon was unreliable. Ultimately, radio communication, though modest in our setup, was a lifeline for many in WNC, showcasing its critical role during a crisis.

What MURS Can't (and Can) Really Do04 Aug 202500:19:09

Digital Modes, Text Messaging, Repeaters—and Why Clarity Matters

In this episode of the Prep Comms Podcast, we dive into one of the most misunderstood parts of MURS radio: digital modes.

Is digital really banned on MURS? Can you send a text? What about crossband repeaters or modes like MT63, RTTY, or APRS?

Caleb clears the air by breaking down what the FCC actually allows—and where people still cross the line. From legal analog data modes to banned digital voice, this episode brings clarity to a confusing corner of the radio spectrum.

We'll also hit:

  • Texting over MURS (yes, it's possible)

  • Why repeaters—including crossband—are a no-go

  • How your antenna system makes or breaks signal strength

  • What "manual control" and bandwidth limits really mean

FRS radios are a great start, but they aren't the whole plan. They work for kids, neighbors, and short-range use — but when the storm hits or the grid goes down, you may need more.

In this episode, Caleb Nelson (K4CDN) explains how FRS fits into a complete family communication plan, including:

  • The strengths and limits of FRS radios

  • How GMRS, MURS, and ham radio build on that foundation

  • Why thinking in layers — the Cascade Protocol — makes families stronger

  • How National Preparedness Month is the right time to move from gear to plan

FRS is a tool worth having, and combined with clarity, it's what keeps families connected.

FRS Mini-Series: The Gear That Works (and What to Avoid)03 Sep 202500:16:24

FRS radios aren't all created equal. Some blister-pack sets are cheap toys that break in a weekend, while others are solid enough to trust on family trips or in an emergency.

In this third episode of the FRS Mini-Series, Caleb Nelson (K4CDN) takes a practical look at the gear:

  • What really matters in an FRS radio (durability, batteries, usability)

  • Why you shouldn't believe the "35-mile range" marketing

  • The difference between throwaway blister packs and quality FRS options

  • Caleb's go-to pick for a reliable family radio

This isn't about buying the most expensive radio on the shelf — it's about choosing gear that works when your family needs it.

And with September being National Preparedness Month, there's no better time to make sure your radios are ready.

20 Years After Katrina: Remembering Carl (KB5WMY-SK) and Amateur Radio's Role29 Aug 202501:00:27

August 29, 2005. Hurricane Katrina slammed the Gulf Coast, the levees failed, and the water swallowed entire neighborhoods. Phones went dead. Power grids collapsed. Families were cut off and 911 calls were rerouted anywhere a signal could land.

In the middle of that chaos were volunteers — amateur radio operators who carried their share of the load when the systems failed.

One of them was Carl, KB5WMY (Silent Key). In 2015, he sat down with me to share his story of working at the Bossier Parish 911 center after Katrina. Carl spoke openly about the calls he could help, the ones he couldn't, and the weight of serving in those days.

Now, on the 20th anniversary of Katrina, we honor Carl's memory and service by replaying that full conversation. It's a behind-the-scenes look at how ordinary people with radios made a difference when everything else went silent.

FRS: Real-World Family Use Cases26 Aug 202500:11:54

FRS radios aren't long-range or flashy, but they're still one of the most useful family tools you can own.

In this episode of the Prep Comms Podcast, Caleb Nelson (K4CDN) dives into how families actually use FRS today, including:

  • Keeping kids connected in the neighborhood

  • Calling everyone home for dinner without shouting

  • Car-to-car communication on road trips and caravans

  • Staying in touch at theme parks, malls, and campgrounds

  • Why short range and lack of privacy don't have to be deal-breakers

FRS may not be perfect, but it works — and when it comes to family connection, that's what matters most.

What is FRS and Why It Matters19 Aug 202500:11:52

In 1996, the FCC created the Family Radio Service (FRS) to give everyday families a simple, free, and legal way to stay connected.

You've probably seen these radios before — blister packs on the shelves at Walmart, Bass Pro, or Target promising 30 miles of range. The truth? They don't go nearly that far, but they've kept families connected for decades.

In this first episode of our FRS Mini-Series, Caleb Nelson (K4CDN) shares:

  • The history of FRS and why the FCC gave it to the public

  • How blister-pack walkie talkies became household items in the 90s and 2000s

  • The real strengths of FRS (simple, free, license-free)

  • The real limits (range, fixed antennas, crowded channels)

  • Why FRS still matters in your family's communication plan today

Whether you've already got a set sitting in a drawer or you're new to radios, this episode will help you see FRS in a whole new light.

Is MURS Still Worth It?13 Aug 202500:21:24

Episode 4 – Is MURS Still Worth It?
Why This Forgotten Band Might Be the Most Reliable Tool in Your Family's Kit

After four episodes, we're wrapping up the MURS Mini-Series with a hard look at one question—does MURS still have a place in 2025?

For 15+ years, I've used MURS radios on our farm for everything from driveway alerts to in-vehicle comms on family road trips. In this episode, I'm breaking down:

  • Real-world MURS performance from long-term use

  • Why antennas matter more than radios (and my trusted picks)

  • How MURS compares to FRS, GMRS, CB, and ham radio today

  • Who MURS is perfect for—and who should look elsewhere

If you've been wondering whether to add MURS to your comms plan—or keep using it—you'll have the answers after this.

GMRS — The Family Band That Actually Works16 Oct 202500:25:06

What you'll learn (fast):

  • Why GMRS is the practical "bigger brother" to FRS: same 22 channels, different rules, more capability.

  • The license is simple: $35, 10 years, one license covers your whole household (apply at FCC.gov).

  • Range reality: terrain + antennas matter. Main channels allow up to 50W transmitter output; interstitials are lower.

  • Privacy tones ≠ privacy. GMRS is open-air. You must ID every 15 minutes and at the end.

  • Why certified radios matter (and why new FRS/GMRS combo handhelds aren't sold anymore).

Caleb Nelson (K4CDN / WRBR 237) walks through:

  • Teaching your family how to power on, adjust volume, and find the right channel

  • Labeling radios so anyone can grab one and talk

  • What privacy tones really do (and what they don't)

  • How GMRS repeaters extend your range — and the simple steps to use them correctly

  • Why practice matters more than equipment

You'll also hear about the new BTech GMRS-50 Pro, the PeliComms ¼-Wave Base Antenna now in stock at PrepComms.shop, and the launch of the Prep Comms Network — a private members-only group for real-world radio users who want to keep learning together, solve problems, and stay connected without the noise of social media.
