62: Building, Selling, and Reinventing as a Creative with Mike Janda28 sept. 202601:13:09

Send us Fan Mail

A “safe” creative career can flip overnight, and Mike Janda has lived that reality from the inside. We talk through his jump from a creative director role at Fox into freelancing after the dot-com bust and 9/11 fallout, then the gritty path of building Riser from a basement setup into a fast-growing agency. Along the way, Mike breaks down what actually creates momentum in the agency business: relationships that turn into referrals, the scary first hires, and the mindset shifts that help you keep moving when the ground changes.

We also get real about downturns. Mike shares what the 2008 recession felt like when you are responsible for payroll, watching budgets tighten, and trying to protect your team while the market keeps sliding. From there, we move into what many creative leaders debate today: office culture versus remote work. We unpack why a great space can be a “home court advantage” for client confidence and team cohesion, while still admitting remote models can unlock talent and scale in ways a single city can’t.

Then we step into the AI era with clear eyes. We discuss tools like Claude and Meta’s Muse, why content is getting noisier, and why authenticity matters more when anybody can generate polished “AI slop.” Mike lays out the most important strategic shift for designers and agency owners: you can’t just sell logos and layouts anymore. The future is consulting, business fundamentals, brand strategy, marketing strategy, and positioning yourself between the client and the AI tool so your value keeps rising.

61: Full Pipeline? Don't Pause Your Marketing with Logan Singleton21 sept. 202600:34:50

Send us Fan Mail

When things get busy, marketing is usually the first thing to get “paused” and it is one of the fastest ways to lose momentum. We sit down with Logan Singleton from HatchMark Studio for a practical look at always-on marketing and why treating your own business like an ongoing client is the difference between steady demand and stressful peaks and valleys.

We talk through the psychology behind turning off ads, slowing social media, or skipping content when your pipeline is full. Then we zoom out to the long game: marketing has lag, sales cycles vary by industry, and the habits you build now are what keep you visible later. We share real examples of lighter-touch marketing like email newsletters, education content, and simple updates that keep you top of mind without running 100 miles an hour.

60: A Modern PR Playbook For Brands with Whitney Lee14 sept. 202600:59:10

Send us Fan Mail

AI is already telling people where to eat, where to stay, and what brand to trust. The question is whether your business is giving it anything worth recommending. We sit down with Whitney Lee of True Story PR, a hospitality-focused PR and marketing leader.

We get specific about the misconception that PR equals press releases or “getting on the news.” For Whitney, PR is the visibility engine that pulls new eyeballs in and keeps loyal customers from forgetting you. She explains how earned media, influencer marketing, partnerships, and pop-up activations fit together, why editorial coverage is tougher in a search-driven publishing world, and what metrics actually make sense when a client asks for ROI.

Then we go deeper into the human side of brand building. We talk thought leadership on LinkedIn, why faces outperform logos, and how to humanize brands that do not have a neat founder story. We also dig into differentiation, the courage to be known for something, and how to handle reputation risk and crisis communications with transparency instead of fear.

59: From Sports Newsrooms to Credit Union Marketing with Jennifer Perez08 sept. 202600:50:57

Send us Fan Mail

A credit union rebrand is one of the fastest ways to learn what your audience really trusts and what they ignore. We’re joined by Jennifer Perez, VP of Marketing at Gulf Winds Credit Union, who brings a rare perspective from sports broadcasting, journalism, and mortgage marketing into the world of community banking and financial services branding.

We talk about the storytelling rules she learned in newsrooms and how they translate directly into content strategy today: know your audience, move faster than your approval process wants to, and stop treating “polished” as the goal. Jennifer shares why raw, timely content often beats perfect content on social media, and how marketing teams can build repeatable content pillars that work across LinkedIn, Instagram, and whatever platform changes next.

58: How Professional Service Firms Can Win Trust on LinkedIn with Sean Johnson31 août 202600:44:39

Send us Fan Mail

Most professional services leaders don’t need another reminder that “you should post on LinkedIn.” You need a way to do it without feeling cringe, without turning into a motivational influencer, and without getting trapped by metrics that don’t translate into real business development.

We sit down with Sean Johnson, founder of Madison, to break down what actually works for boutique consulting firms and other B2B service businesses: executive thought leadership that sounds like a real human, shares specific lessons from client work, and builds trust over time. Sean explains why faces consistently beat logos, why company pages still matter as an on-ramp, and how a service-first mindset removes the narcissism objection. We also talk about the “trust in the aggregate” approach, the belief that no one post's metrics define the success of your efforts.

If you want a simple, repeatable LinkedIn marketing strategy for B2B growth, hit play.

57: How A County Brand Wins Jobs & Talent with McCall Lugo18 août 202600:41:58

Send us Fan Mail

Most people think economic development is a closed-door game of incentives, spreadsheets, and political talking points. The truth is messier and far more human: companies don’t just choose a site, they choose a life their workforce will tolerate or even love. That’s why we brought on McCall Lugo, Director of Economic Development at the Baldwin Alliance, to talk about what modern economic development really demands from a fast-growing county like Baldwin County, Alabama.

We dig into how Baldwin Alliance supports recruitment, retention, and expansion while also working in workforce development, talent attraction, and the partner-heavy reality of being a “connector” across government, industry, and local communities. McCall shares how and why Belong In Baldwin evolved from a talent attraction campaign into a flexible community identity used by municipalities and employers to help new hires plug in faster. We also unpack why a strong brand and online presence can give a region an edge long after incentives get attention.

56: Past, Present, & Future of Tourism Marketing with Lindsey Steck10 août 202600:52:44

Send us Fan Mail

Everyone's chasing "destination vibes" on social right now. But the real work behind tourism marketing is a lot more technical, and a lot more human, than a pretty feed makes it look.

We're joined by Lindsey Steck, Marketing and Communications Manager at Visit Pensacola, to talk about what it actually takes to promote an entire county. She walks us through how a destination marketing organization earns media coverage, builds an organic social strategy people actually use to plan trips, and moves past the scroll-and-forget content everyone else is putting out.

We get into the real mechanics of creator marketing and influencer partnerships. How does Visit Pensacola use visitor research to choose the right creators? What do negotiations and deliverables actually look like? Lindsey breaks down why the line between earned and paid media keeps getting blurrier, especially as creators publish through legacy outlets, broadcast partners, and newer platforms.

Then we zoom out to platforms and performance. Short form video comes up, along with why Pinterest still drives real website conversions, and why YouTube might be the most underrated long game for travel marketing and SEO as search behavior keeps shifting.

If you've been chasing trends or obsessing over likes, this one's a good gut check to focus on saves, web conversions, and real intent instead.

55: Trade Show Marketing That Converts with Chris Tonn27 juil. 202600:43:31

Send us Fan Mail

It's easy to assume marketing in 2026 means going all in on digital: automation, targeted ads, algorithms doing the heavy lifting. But Chris Tonn, co-founder of Rocket Drones, is proof there's still real money on the table when you show up in person.

We talk about why trade shows and conferences remain one of the most underrated ways to convert leads, especially if you sell something complex. Chris shares how Rocket Drones turns booth visits into genuine conversations using hands-on demos like their inflatable drone cage and flight simulators, and why that kind of engagement builds trust faster than any ad campaign can.

If you've been wondering whether trade shows are still worth the investment, this episode makes the case for why in-person still works, and how to make the most of it.

54: How An Executive Assistant Keeps Marketing & Operations Moving with Kate Simmons20 juil. 202600:37:27

Send us Fan Mail

Ask most people what an Executive Assistant actually does and they'll guess wrong. We're back on Practical Rebels with Kate Simmons from Sunchase Companies, and she's laying out what the job really looks like once you're the one making things happen behind a growing company's clean org chart, marketing coordination, problem solving, and all.

Kate walks us through why she left a big institution for a smaller, faster-moving team, what it's like when onboarding hits full speed by day two, and why this role hands you confidence before you ever feel ready for it. She also produces Sunchase's own podcast start to finish, guest outreach, scheduling, editing, publishing, social promotion, and shares how her marketing responsibilities grew after a rebrand until she became the one trusted point person everything ran through.

Then we get into the practical stuff. How she switches gears all day long, what she does when three "urgent" requests land at once, and how she keeps the plates spinning without dropping the ones that matter. Kate breaks down her decision filter, why a quick check-in with leadership beats guessing, and the tools that actually keep her sane, Google Calendar as her single source of truth, and handwritten notes for the context an AI note taker will always miss.

We also talk imposter syndrome, owning your mistakes out loud, and what she'd tell young professionals trying to break into a hiring landscape run by AI. If you're job hunting, building a career in marketing operations, or just trying to make your transferable skills and your network work harder for you, this one's worth the listen.

53: How to Use Deep Research Mode in ChatGPT for a Competitive Advantage04 déc. 202500:19:42

Send us Fan Mail

Many marketers use AI only for quick answers or surface-level tasks. In Episode 53 of Practical Rebels, Veronique and Logan explain why that approach leaves valuable opportunities on the table. They explore how deep research mode in ChatGPT can help teams gather insights, analyze competitors, and organize information that drives stronger strategy.

The episode begins with a breakdown of what deep research mode actually does. It helps teams work through complex questions, identify hidden patterns, and pull together structured analysis that normally takes hours of manual research. Because of this, marketers can speed up decision making and focus more energy on creativity and execution.

Veronique and Logan explain how to compare brand messaging, evaluate service offerings, and uncover positioning gaps that can shape marketing strategy. They walk through practical examples that show how to turn raw research into usable insights.

Additionally, the episode covers the importance of setting clear prompts. With the right guidance, ChatGPT can organize findings, summarize sources, and create strategic frameworks that teams can use during planning sessions. This is especially helpful for small teams that want to move quickly without sacrificing depth.

Finally, the team shares tips for integrating AI into everyday workflows. They show how deep research mode supports better brainstorming, faster campaign planning, and more informed creative thinking.

For marketers who want to elevate their work, this episode offers a clear path forward. Deep research mode is more than a tool. It is a way to work smarter, stay competitive, and build stronger strategies with confidence.

What SEO best practices are you implementing in 2025?

Creating SEO content is a great way to drive organic traffic to your website. That being said, SEO is not a set it and forget it game. Google’s algorithms are always changing, meaning you’re constantly dealing with a moving target. To make matters more challenging, the “best practices” today might not be the same tomorrow. You have to constantly have your ear to the ground and do the research to stay in the know.

2025 is shaping up to be a year that takes a stand against bad content. We’ve all seen it. The blog on the website that is loaded with junk content that was only made to rank. With Google’s core update in August 2024, we saw a lot of that kind of content getting pushed out, making room for great content that is helpful and that people actually want to consume. This is good news for content creators who are already doing the hard work. Bad news for the people taking shortcuts. Sorry, not sorry.

We sat down with Logan on this episode of Practical Rebels to discuss how you can start implementing SEO best practices for 2025, how AI is playing a role, and why your search optimization should be extending to your social strategy. Come nerd out with us on this latest episode! Now streaming on all of your favorite podcast platforms.

25: Shaking Up The Mobile Service Scene with Dannon Byrd of Tap the Coast25 sept. 202400:55:59

Everyone will remember at least three things from any wedding or event: a really bad speech, the food, and the drinks.

Tap the Coast is a mobile beverage service based in our hometown of Pensacola, Florida. Founded by Dannon Byrd, the idea was born out of the perfectly shaken mix of a well-timed Pinterest photo, a noticeable demand in the region, and a post-pandemic wedding rush. Transitioning from the nonprofit world, Dannon used her connections and fundraising knowledge to start her business in late 2019. She had no industry background. No bartending experience. What she did have was an unwavering passion for events and a drive to make the very first mobile beverage service in Northwest Florida succeed. Leveraging word of mouth marketing, Tap the Coast has quickly risen to a go-to provider of customized beverage menus and service at weddings, corporate gatherings, and fundraising events.

Dannon joined us on the Practical Rebels podcast to talk about the growing success of her business which she attributes to everything from a strong team and a really good CPA. Tune in to learn more about Dannon’s story and how the world of mobile services is taking over events.

Much of entrepreneurship, leadership, and life is learning, listening, and gaining experiences that guide your path. This week’s guest is a perfect example of someone who’s done just that. We were lucky enough to get an exclusive hour with our (very busy) hometown Mayor, @dcreevesmayor.

Our discussion ranged from his beginnings as a sports writer and his professional mentorship through @qdstuder to the lessons learned opening a brewery and his eventual appointment to City of Pensacola’s 64th Mayor. The Mayor attributes Pensacola’s recent and exciting growth to its invigorating entrepreneurial spirit and unwavering commitment to philanthropy mixed with a really good problem to have: people just want to come to Pensacola. As Pensacola’s youngest Mayor in over 100 years, Reeves is driven daily by the excitement of helping local businesses thrive, working to make Pensacola a better place to live for everyone who calls it home and sharing what’s so special about it with the rest of the world.

This is a very special episode that you won’t want to miss! We’re so excited about the growth and future of Pensacola and can’t thank the Mayor enough for taking the time to join us on Practical Rebels. They say never work with your friends, but we don’t agree with that. Over the years, HatchMark Studio has developed a reputation of being a team that is…a little close. Maybe too close at times. But what we’ve found is that working closely with friends can have a profound impact on workplace happiness and success.

Whether it’s bringing someone on the team you already trust or prioritizing an abundance of transparency throughout every layer of the business, working with friends or allowing yourself to get closer to your coworkers can ensure you’re always on a shared pathway to success. It can even enable you to take risks you wouldn't have otherwise taken knowing your bestie is there to back you up.

This latest episode of Practical Rebels takes a closer look at benefits of nurturing close relationships with coworkers and the potential drawbacks to look out for before they become a problem. We were in our feelings for this one, so you’ll want to tune in so we can share everything we’ve learned during our journey. Now streaming on all of your favorite platforms!

19: Social Media Ads 101: Why, How, and Where to Begin26 juin 202400:23:06

Send us Fan Mail

Do you need to be advertising on social media? 🤔

The answer is “yes.” But we know it’s not that simple for every business. You need to know how much you should expect to spend, what content needs to be created, and how to know whether or not it’s working.

For better or worse, social media platforms like Meta have switched their business model to encourage content creators to pay for their service. The good news is that you won’t have to spend nearly as much as you may think. However, the days of crossing your fingers and hoping for the best through a purely organic strategy might be slowly but surely coming to an end.

In this latest episode of the Practical Rebels podcast, Veronique and Ramsey dive into the world of social media advertising. They discuss how much you should spend, which content is performing the best, and how to optimize your marketing strategy to reach beyond social media.

Destyn’s people-first philosophy of business and quest to surround himself with friends who challenge him daily has led to success for his agency on both a local and national stage. More recently, the Lensea Film team found themselves in a production support role on the all-new @usnavyblueangels IMAX feature film with J.J.
