She Runs a Law Firm From the Beach With No Billable Hours01 Oct 202600:57:39

Ariella Cohen Coleman was going to work in fashion. She wanted to be a Bloomingdale's buyer. Then her dad was diagnosed with stage four colon cancer when she was thirteen, and he died when she was seventeen, and by the time she got to college her entire world had reoriented around advocacy.

She went to law school to fix healthcare. Not to practice law. To fix the system that had her mother spending every day of her father's illness fighting insurance companies just to get covered care covered.

Then she got sick herself, got told never to talk about it professionally, and spent years believing she was the only lawyer in the country with a complex health history.

Today she's the founder of The Wellness Esquire and host of its podcast, and she runs Ariella Law with no billable hours from beaches around the world.

In this episode we cover:

  • Why she went to law school with no intention of ever practicing
  • Watching her mom become her first example of an advocate
  • Getting diagnosed during her first year of law school and what she learned about staying safe
  • Six concussions, and the one that finally made her stop
  • Working through a concussion for a month because stopping felt like weakness
  • How boredom turned into the first real questions she'd ever asked herself
  • Being told never to discuss her health professionally, and what happened when she finally did
  • The law student who messaged her after that first post, and where she is now
  • Why we're too quiet about the options, and how many ways there actually are to be a lawyer
  • Her two pieces of advice for any lawyer who knows something is wrong
  • Building a firm with no billable hours, chosen clients, and a written mistakes policy
  • The Wellness Esquire directory and why community is the missing piece

She Offered to Quit. They Said Get Another Nanny: with Jessie Brown24 Sep 202600:42:22

Jessie Brown wanted to be a writer. She was an English major doing an MFA in creative nonfiction when she lost both of her parents and realized she had no financial safety net. So she did the practical thing and went to law school.

That pattern, choosing the safe path over the one that actually fit, followed her for the next two decades. It picked her practice area. It kept her in litigation long after her body was telling her something was wrong. It even had her enrolled in a backup master's program while she was already building the business she actually wanted.

Today Jessie is a coach and retreat facilitator working with attorneys at every stage, from brand new associates to partners planning their exit. She's also a trained forest bathing guide, sound healer, breathwork facilitator, and meditation teacher, and she leads nature-based retreats in Sedona.

This conversation is about what it takes to finally stop letting fear pick your life for you.

In this episode we cover:

  • Why she chose law school after losing both parents and having no safety net
  • The senior partner who told a room of young female associates the truth about how she "had it all"
  • The annual review where she offered to resign and was told to hire a second nanny
  • Leaving, staying home, moving across the country, and sitting for a second bar exam on her own dime
  • The deposition that made her physically ill and changed her practice area
  • Stepping down from the partner track and taking a pay cut to do work that fit her
  • The Clifton Strengths result that finally explained why everything felt so hard
  • Being the unofficial office therapist for her entire career and what it was telling her
  • The safety-seeking part of her that picks every path, and how she learned to spot it
  • What actually happens to a nervous system on a retreat, and why in-person still matters

Lawyer. Reality Star. Public Defender. Sydney Segal Refuses to Pick Just One17 Sep 202600:42:30

Sydney Segal is a lot of things. Brooklyn Law grad. Public defender in New York. Survivor 41 competitor. Runner-up on The Challenge: Vets and New Threats. Former Division I track athlete and California state cross-country champion. Five-language speaker. Solo backpacker through 60+ countries. And someone who has figured out how to be all of those things at once — without apologizing for any of them.

She didn't stumble into this life. She built it deliberately, starting with two gap years, a very clear sense of what she didn't want, and the willingness to bet on herself before anyone told her she was allowed to.

This episode is about what it looks like to refuse the box — and actually pull it off.

In this episode we cover:

  • Why she took two gap years before law school — and why she'd tell every young lawyer to do the same
  • How she ended up on Survivor during a COVID semester and never looked back
  • The comp day strategy that made reality TV possible — twice — without leaving her job
  • Why she chose public defense over big law and has never once regretted it
  • What it actually feels like to be on reality TV — and what it exposed about herself she didn't expect
  • How being a D1 athlete shaped how she handles the mental weight of criminal defense work
  • Her rule for the work phone: it stays home, every time, no guilt
  • What she means when she calls it a life resume — not a bucket list
  • "Bet on yourself" — what that actually looked like in practice before she had a safety net
  • Leaving for China solo in ten days to check off her seventh wonder of the world

ICU Nurse. Big Law Attorney. Now Building the Life She Actually Wants23 Jul 202601:19:37

Tatyana Norman Webler graduated nursing school in May 2020 — straight into the COVID pandemic. She spent three years as an ICU nurse watching the healthcare system fail patients in real time, asking why the left hand never talked to the right hand, and wondering if there was a way to fix it. Then she went to law school.

She graduated — in labor — passed the bar with a newborn at home, and landed in big law. Eight months later, she was gone.

This is the story of what happened in between. And what the blood work proved.

In this episode we talk about the moment Tatyana realized big law wasn't just misaligned with her values — it was bad for her biology. We talk about high functioning depression, the Body Keeps the Score, and what it actually looks like to climb out of survival mode and build a life from scratch that actually fits who you are.

In this episode we cover:

  • How a single moment on a hospital ethics committee made Tatyana want to go to law school
  • Graduating law school in active labor — and walking across that stage anyway
  • Passing the bar with a newborn and four hours of study time a day
  • What eight months in big law actually cost her — and how her biomarkers told the whole story
  • The week she didn't nurse her daughter once because of an artificial deadline — and the rage that followed
  • Why she left and what happened to her blood work six months later
  • High functioning depression: what it is, how it's different from burnout, and why so many lawyers are living in it without knowing
  • "You can't outthink your way out of depression" — and what she's doing instead
  • How coaching helped her stop strategizing and start actually doing
  • The portfolio career she's building: Lucid Edge Advising, the Ohio Brain Capital Alliance, and her podcast Lucid Commons
  • Why two things can be true at the same time — and why that's the permission slip most of us need

  • High Functioning Depression by Dr. Judith Joseph

Burnout Will Kill Your Business as Fast as Bankruptcy — with Danielle Hendon09 Jul 202600:35:35

You left the firm to build something on your own terms. But somewhere between getting clients, managing a team, and handling everything else that comes with running a business, the freedom you were chasing started to look a lot like another job.

Danielle Hendon has seen it a hundred times. As founder of 4 Corners CFO, she works exclusively with female-founded law firms as a fractional CFO — helping them understand what their numbers are actually saying, structure their revenue for real profit, and build firms that support their lives instead of consuming them.

This conversation is practical, direct, and exactly what solo and small firm owners need to hear.

In this episode we cover

  • How Danielle went from opera singer to accountant to fractional CFO for female law firm owners
  • Why hanging your own shingle often just means trading one boss for many — and what to do about it
  • The rule of thirds: how your P&L should actually be structured for sustainable profit
  • Why time tracking still matters even when you swore you'd never do it again
  • What "closing the closables" means and how it can free up cash immediately
  • The case study: how one estate planning client's first quarter profit equaled her entire prior year — after making one key hire
  • Why the numbers aren't a judgment — they're a story and a roadmap
  • How to know when you're ready to hire (hint: it's 10 billable hours a week)
  • The line of credit conversation every attorney needs to have before they need one

In this episode, Misty shares the winding, intentional journey that led her to finally go out on her own — and why the bravest thing she ever did was stop asking "can I do this?" and start asking "do I even want to?"

In this episode, we cover:

  • How Misty accidentally stumbled into ERISA law via a newspaper job listing in Charlotte — and why it opened doors in Big Law
  • What five years in-house taught her that she never could have learned at a firm

Tamara Holder has never done anything the traditional way — and it has made her one of the most powerful women's rights attorneys in the country. She's the principal of Tamara Holder Law, a Chicago-based boutique firm she founded in 2005 focusing on women's rights globally — including sex trafficking, sexual assault, workplace harassment, and institutional sexual abuse. She Got Laid Off Twice and Started Her Firm the Next Day14 May 202600:49:11

Ruby Powers has been doing what the rest of the legal world just figured out — for over a decade. Board-certified immigration attorney, founder of Powers Law Group, law professor, author of Power Up Your Practice, and one of the earliest adopters of remote law practice and AI-driven legal tools, Ruby built her firm from scratch — including from Dubai — on her terms, on her timeline.

In this episode, we talk about how she went from laid off to law firm founder overnight, the three roles every firm owner has to navigate, and what actually happens when you stop being the only manager in the room.

In this episode we cover:

  • Why she registered her law firm the day after being laid off — for the second time
  • Running a remote law firm from Dubai in 2011 before anyone thought it was possible

The People Pleaser's Guide to Quitting: How to Have the Breakup Conversation with Your Law Firm19 Feb 202600:41:30

Hey Powerhouses! This week we're talking about what happens when you wake up and realize you're living someone else's perfect life—and what it takes to create one that actually fits. Wendy Meadows, seasoned family law attorney, former litigator, certified life coach, mediator, and author of the bestselling book Sparkle & Grit, joins us to share her journey from BigLaw burnout to building a practice (and life) on her own terms.

We dive into why Wendy left her firm after 13 years (spoiler: asking permission for vacation was the last straw), how Beachbody coaching taught her more about running a business than law school ever did, and why so many lawyers who go solo end up making MORE money while working fewer hours than they ever imagined. Wendy breaks down the math (yes, there's a spreadsheet), walks us through the hardest part of going solo (the breakup conversation with your partners), and explains why hiring an assistant before you think you need one is non-negotiable.

We also talk about the Sparkle and Grit framework—why you need both the feminine (sparkle) and masculine (grit) energy to succeed, how to recognize burnout before you hit the wall, and why 2026 is Wendy's year of "ease." Plus, Wendy gets real about her divorce, redefining success on her own terms, and learning to let opportunities flow to her instead of grinding for them.

And yes, she wore two different shoes to court. Twice.

From Interviewing Pop Stars to Running Lawyer.com: Why Fun Is Actually a Business Strategy12 Feb 202600:31:33

Hey Powerhouses! This week we're diving into the wild world of legal tech with Colleen Joyce, CEO of Lawyer.com. From interviewing A-list celebrities at Popstar.com to building one of the leading online legal marketplaces, Colleen brings authenticity, energy, and a growth-first mindset to everything she does—including her new ice skating lessons (yes, really).

We talk about riding the AI wave instead of getting crushed by it, why your competitors are already using AI and what you need to know, and how Colleen runs Lawyer.com like a startup with a flat organizational structure where anyone can bring an idea to the table. The conversation highlights the importance of leading by example, creating a culture where fun is a pillar (hello, dress-up days!), and why community and networking are some of the biggest growth levers you can pull.

Colleen and I delve into the challenge of being a beginner at something, the power of testing every AI platform out there (even if you don't buy anything), and why understanding your baseline metrics is critical for growth. We also discuss how the legal tech space has shifted from buttoned-up lawyers to a more casual, Google-style startup environment, and why joining masterminds and communities—even when it's uncomfortable—is what builds longevity in business.

Plus, Colleen shares her legally blonde moment of walking into a glass wall while scrolling on her phone (we've all been there), and invites us all to embrace the chaos, have fun, and maybe even lace up some ice skates.

From Zero Clients to Retiring Her Doctor Husband: Building a Tech-Powered Law Firm05 Feb 202600:47:02

Episode Description

What happens when you start a law firm with zero clients, zero contacts, and a vision that doesn't fit anyone else's mold? Gabriela Smith did exactly that—and built it so successfully that her anesthesiologist husband retired from medicine to join her. In this powerful conversation, Gabriela shares how she transformed from a BigLaw litigator who hated asking permission for vacation into an entrepreneur building a tech-powered, human-centric M&A law firm that's rewriting the rules. She talks about legal subscriptions replacing billable hours, why AI can't replace human intuition, creating a law firm "umbrella" for entrepreneurial attorneys who want freedom, and what it really takes to walk through the thick mud of reinvention. This is for every attorney who's ever felt like they don't fit the traditional mold—because you don't have to.
