I'm in awe of the Kansas City Chiefs and all the incredible life lessons they keep throwing our way! We can learn a lot from the Chiefs, and in this episode, I'm sharing seven life lessons I picked up on over the last 48 hours. If you missed it, you might also love last week's episode where I talked about lessons from the speech Patrick Mahomes gave on the sidelines when they were down. Links to articles I referenced:

The Kansas City Chiefs were down 24-0 in the first 20 minutes of the game last weekend. Everyone thought they were doomed. Quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, kept his cool, remained calm, and gave a speech to his team. "Let's do something special," he said. What can we learn from the speech that spurred the comeback? In this episode, I share four thoughts from Mahomes' speech that we can all apply to get the outcomes we want at work, in sports, and in life.

| 80. Mark Cucuzzella: On Nutrition, Running, and Fast Shoes | 12 Nov 2019 | 00:56:06 | |
I was honored to have Dr. Mark Cucuzzella for this episode. We covered a bunch of topics, including nutrition for runners, low carb vs high/moderate carb, how focusing on nutrition first can help those who are more sedentary feel like exercising, and the Nike Vaporfly controversy. I've always thought of Dr. Mark as a biomechanics expert, but his knowledge runs much deeper. He is the author of Run for Your Life: How to Run, Walk, and Move Without Pain Or Injury and Achieve a Sense of Well-Being and Joy, as well as the owner of a running store, a university medical professor, a family practice doctor, an Air Force Reserve Lieutenant Colonel, and he conducts Continuing Medical Education courses on health, fitness, and running through HealthFitU and developed the US Air Force Efficient Running Program. I could have talked running with Dr. Mark all day. I hope you enjoy our chat!

HIIPA stands for High Intensity Incidental Physical Activity, and it could be the secret to helping millions of Americans improve their health. With HIIPA, there is no minimum amount of time a person needs to move. It’s about adding high-intensity moments into the existing structure of someone’s day. The key is to find ways to put yourself into situations where your heart is beating hard and you have to catch your breath. Learn more about HIIPA, and how it can boost your health, in this episode! | 77. What is a Fartlek and Which Runners Need Them? | 24 Sep 2019 | 00:14:02
Fartlek is Swedish for “speed play,” and by definition, it should be unstructured. I like to think of fartlek runs as an opportunity for my athletes to get in some speed work without the stress of feeling like they need to hit specific interval times. When I write training plans for more experienced runners, I include fartlek runs as a transition to help them prepare for a phase of training that includes more intense speed work. For my newer runners, I use fartleks as a way to help them learn to vary their pace, and I schedule several of these runs prior to introducing structured intervals. Learn all about fartlek runs - and why you need them - in this episode! Let's Make a Commitment! The week of June 24th is National Triathlon Week, so I’m doing a series of podcasts, videos and posts about triathlon. Today, I am talking about the excuses we make that hold us back. Because, even though it seemed like everyone was on board, so many of these things popped up for us, and continue to pop up even this year. So I am going to cover the most common reasons people avoid taking part in a triathlon—and tell you my tips for moving past those obstacles. Now, if you truly aren’t even the slightest bit curious, that’s a whole different story. This episode is for those of you who are on the fence. | 58. Slay What's Next: Challenging Stereotypes About What it Means to Get Older | 21 Jun 2019 | 00:20:35
The way we think of aging is influenced in a big way by the images we see in the media. And, without examples of active, vibrant, intelligent older adults, it is logical that we will buy into the stereotype of the sedentary, confused older adult who is content to sit in a rocking chair and talk about the good old days. We are learning that the stereotypes and pre-conceived notions we have about what it’s like to age, or what it means to have a disease or to have cancer, really affect how things go moving forward. | Can You Protect Your Brain? The Link Between Alzheimer's and Menopause | 07 Jun 2019 | 00:20:28
Welcome to Free Thinking Friday, a brief episode where discuss some of the things I’ve been pondering throughout the week. I was alarmed when I woke up and read an article one of my friends posted on Facebook. It talked about the link between Alzheimer's and menopause. At the end of the article, almost as a footnote, they mentioned that no one had yet studied how this affects breast cancer patients on hormone-blocking drugs. I felt like I was going to hyperventilate. The article said that surgical removal of the ovaries increases the risk of Alzheimer's by 70%... This was not exactly the statistic I wanted to wake up to. I did a little digging to see what else I could find about this menopause/Alzheimer's link, and I'm chatting about that research on this week's episode. I also shared an article that discussed why your personal trainer should be as important as your financial advisor. Both of these topics are related, and I hope you enjoy this episode. | 55. Are You Slipping? Checking in with Your Habits | 04 Jun 2019 | 00:26:45
As I started looking more critically at my own habits, I noticed something: I've been slipping. When we gain weight, or lose fitness, it's easy to blame middle age, or a medication or an unfortunate turn of events. But sometimes, we need to take a look at our habits. Are we doing the things we know work for us? Or are we sliding into a behavior pattern where we are constantly making exceptions? In this episode, I give you three areas to check on your own habits, and I give you some real world examples of how this is working in my own family. I offer one-on-one coaching and group coaching for 5K through marathon distance. If you're ready to train for an event, let's chat! It broke my heart when one of my daughters spilled all the feelings that had been bottled up for months and months. Over the course of three years, she’s gained about 40 pounds. She would get on a roll with her fitness and nutrition and start to lose weight… and every time she got to a point where she was gaining momentum, something would happen. In this episode, I share some of her story, wonder why we put so much emphasis on appearance, encourage you to find additional ways beyond appearance to compliment the people in your life... and share my HEART acronym for creating behavior change.
