Abigail formally retracted a fun “fact” she had previously shared on the podcast regarding artificial banana flavoring being based on the Gros Michel banana instead of the Cavendish banana, which is the most common banana cultivar eaten today. The 2013 SciShow video where she first learned this false fact has since been edited to remove any reference to this hypothesis but points to this article that explains the hypothesis. This Hank Green video first brought the debunking of this hypothesis to Abigail’s attention.
Abigail asked if Mischievous Grin would count as a “cream tangerine” (we have officially gone zero episodes without mentioning the White Album!).
Barry had heard that the three war songs on this album were inspired by the Falklands War between Argentina and the United Kingdom that lasted for a little over two months in 1982. Abigail had always pictured the Vietnam War, partly because of the imagery in Ride Across the River, and partly because Abigail’s consumption of war media was heavily influenced by The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien, a novel about the Vietnam War.
Abigail presented Circle the Drain by Katy Perry as a counter-example to the more playful breakup vibes of . That led us into a conversation about our respective “ moments”: See , , and, most recently, .
Grimm Chat, Man (Tracy Chapman and Grimm Artisanal Ales)
Barry spoke about his memory of encountering a curfew during a period of race riots in Bridgeton, New Jersey, where he grew up, when he was eight years old.
Prior to this episode, Abigail knew Tracy Chapman best from her version of O Holy Night.
Read about Luke Combs’ cover of Fast Car that made Tracy Chapman the first black woman to win Song of the Year at the Country Music Awards in 2023. Watch Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman perform Fast Car together at the 2023 Grammys.
Matt and Jeff initially met around 2003 to promote a show on which Matt’s band The Pantones and Jeff’s band The Gentleman Callers were billed together.
Both Matt and Jeff release music under a number of different names. In addition to The Stick Arounds and The Pantones, Matty is the frontman of Harborcoat. While The Gentleman Callers no longer release music, Jeff currently plays in a country duo called Deer & Elk.
Listen to Deer & Elk’s single, , and that Matty shot.
Adult Beverages (Katy Perry and Urban South Brewery)
In looking deeper into the fun fact from Carlo’s Corner about salt killing yeast, we stumbled upon this article on the history and science of Goses written by the brewmaster of Anderson Valley Brewing Company in Boonville, California, a brewery known for their Goses. Per the article, some Goses from the early 20th century had between 130 and 280 ppm of salt. Anderson Valley typically adds about 800 ppm of salt - but only after fermentation. It is thought that as little as 100-150 ppm of salt can cause osmotic stress to the yeast and therefore decrease fermentation rates, but the salt concentration required to completely inhibit fermentation or cause death for the yeast are much higher than humans would tolerate as palatable in a beverage.
Abigail then entered Why? into the Abigail Hummel School of Speaking Smartly About Music with a comparison to How Come? from the original off-Broadway cast recording of Children's Letters to God.
We closed by playing a clip of Katy Perry’s 2024 single WOMAN’S WORLD, which was co-written and produced by alleged sexual and financial abuser Dr. Luke. Watch the music video if you are so inclined!
Revolver is one of Barry’s favorite Beatles albums. He compared the throat clear at the beginning of She Says What She Means to George Harrison’s counting on Taxman, the opening track of Revolver.
Abigail had confusion over Seems So Heavy, which by title alone seems to be a rip-off of/tribute to I Want You (She’s So Heavy) by The Beatles. Later, she would compare the opening couple of notes of Suppose They Close the Door to the opening couple of notes of I Want You (She’s So Heavy).
Abigail shared that one of the best meals she ever ate was in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, from where Sloan originated. She ate sea-cuterie at Waterfront Warehouse.
Barry compared the piano in Chester the Molester to the piano in Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da by The Beatles.
We briefly discussed James Taylor’s eponymous debut album, which was released on The Beatles’ Apple Records (the first non-British artist on the label), was recorded at Trident Studios concurrently with the White Album, and features Paul McCartney and George Harrison on bass guitar and backing vocals, respectively! But Barry had part of the story backward - Something in the Way She Moves inspired the opening line of Harrison’s Something, not the other way around. (Coincidentally, Taylor has said he had meant for the song to be called “I Feel Fine,” but that title had already been taken by The Beatles!) We played a little bit of the version of Carolina In My Mind that appears on this debut album - the version with members of The Beatles included. Later, Abigail mentioned that she kept hearing How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You) by James Taylor in I Wanna Thank You.
The “fact” we learned in Carlo’s Corner has been partially debunked. If you’re interested, you can learn more about Niels Bohr, Carlsberg, or Jarlsberg.
