She highlights that stability and compliance are prevalent in the profession while debunking the myth that podiatrists are uninspired or 'boring.'

The conversation covers the importance of questioning the status quo, balancing adherence to rules with innovative thinking, and stepping out of one's comfort zone for personal and professional growth.

Deb also shares insights into behaviour types and the necessity of continuous self-improvement. This episode contains anecdotes, examples, and advice to inspire podiatrists to embrace change and challenge themselves.

The Power of Persuasion: The Mindsets, Strategies, and Tactics that Enhance Leadership Success and Profitability with Dave Frees

This LIVE one-day event with Dave Frees will be life-changing.

If you've listened to my podcast, you would know I have been travelling to Tempe, Arizona, every October since 2015 to attend his Business Black Ops event.

It is rare to have this calibre of speaker in Australia, let alone Cairns, so I suggest doing whatever you can to attend. There are only a limited number of seats available, so I would not sit on the fence too long.

238 - Care Differently with Jeff Peterson21 Dec 202201:17:52

What does Care Differently mean? If you want your business to be different, you've got to care about your clients differently, and giving them a discount does not mean you care; it only means you're trying to be cheaper than your competitor down the street. If you put your client's needs first, the rest of your business will fall into place naturally.

My guest, Jeff Peterson, is the owner of Interstate Music in Wisconsin, USA, an online music business with a Musician's First Mindset.

Jeff's marketing strategy with Interstate Music is mind-blowing and utterly different from how marketing is usually done in the music industry. It is pure genius, which is why he won the top honours at the Wisconsin Small Business Awards.

I've always said you should learn from what others are doing in different industries and ask yourself, how can I apply that in my business?

In this episode, Jeff and I discuss the following:

  • The power of storytelling and how it can emotionally connect with the receiver.
  • Human nature is about connectively. You either connect or don't connect with people, which can make everything or break everything in business relationships.
  • What makes a person think they are good enough in their career to lead the charge to be an expert in their industry?
  • Don't die with the music (or knowledge) still in you.
  • The benefits of sharing what you know with others.
  • You don't have to have all the answers.
  • Business didn't come naturally; it was something I had to learn.
  • When your business gets bigger, people will take potshots at you.
  • What Jeff learnt taking over a business that went into bankruptcy and the importance of understanding the numbers of a business.

Hire Good People

When you're looking for people to join your Team, you should hire good people, not good resumes. They either have it or they don't. If they don't, they're not for you.

Care Differently

You've always got to consider what your customers want and need and whether you can provide it. You cannot keep being the same as everyone else and expect a different result, and simply saying you care more or giving discounts to beat your competitors does not mean you do.

You need to show them you care more with your consistent actions. You must find out what truly matters to your customers and deliver on that.

At Interstate Music, they developed a Musician's First Mindset; they take what they do for a living and help them develop it further. They help them create content (video, photos, etc.) and work with them to develop their exposure in the industry.

By building authentic relationships with Musicians, Jeff and his Team at Interstate Music are building long-term trusting relationships within the music industry. If musicians buy their equipment from Interstate Music in the future…well, that's a bonus.

Do you have a Client First Mindset or are you focused on your needs?

Slow Bleed & Loss of Energy

If you focus too long on your competition and not on your own business, it is a death spiral and slow bleed for your business, especially if they are not spending time thinking about you.

Be aware of your competitors, and pay attention, but don't become obsessed.

Everyone gets into business for a reason, and there will always be some form of energy behind them making this decision. Don't waste your energy worrying about what everyone else is doing.

If you do, you won't have the energy to work on your own business.

Social Media

Don't use social media platforms just because someone else is doing it. Ask yourself, will this platform work for my business? Are my ideal clients using this platform? If they are, work on a long-term strategy to make it work for you, don't just follow what everyone else is doing.

The Power of Marketing

When we recorded this podcast (and YouTube video), Jeff and I were drinking a can of Liquid Death, which is just a can of water.

There's no screw top lid, which makes it slightly impractical and not very portable, but it is cool, and they have marketed it exceptionally well. Their tagline is 'Murder Your Thirst'.

Jeff and I agreed you don't have to do something new, but you need to market it better or differently.

  • How can you apply this idea to your podiatry business?
  • What can I do to charge a premium in my podiatry business?

Adapt Over Time

You should be evolving and adapting your business over time. You should be updating how you do things. You should always be looking for a different perspective. Staying the same while others are moving forward means you are falling behind.

You don't do this just for your patients; you're also doing this for your Team. They need to know they are in a progressive business.

Your Team needs to buy into your vision for the future.

Learn & Share

If you make a mistake or do something wrong, you've got to be able to work out why it was wrong and learn from it, and when you learn something new, share it with those that will listen.

Don't keep it as the best-kept secret.

237 - The LOVED ONE's Test with Jonathan Small15 Dec 202200:39:22

Suppose someone in your family needed medical treatment. Would you be happy if the treating doctor only gave them limited treatment options because they had a limited skill set, or would you prefer the doctor explained ALL the available treatment options, even if it meant they had to refer them to another doctor or specialist?

This is the basis of The LOVED ONE's Test.

Jonathan Small has appeared on this podcast nine times. I keep inviting him back because he delivers relevant, practitioner-driven content every time, and The LOVED ONE's Test is no different. He is also the owner of Health First Foot & Gait Clinic in Southam, UK.

In this episode, we discuss the following:

  • Informed Consent.
  • The Patient Experience.
  • Providing the best level of care.
  • Building trust with your patients through referrals, don't be afraid of losing patients.

Suppose you cannot treat a particular problem. In that case, it is better for the profession if you can refer them to another podiatrist that can treat the problem instead of referring them to a Physiotherapist or General Practitioner.

236 - What is the Podiatry Marketing Podcast with Dr Jim McDannald, DPM08 Dec 202200:32:46

Did you know I co-host a second podcast show called the Podiatry Marketing Podcast with Dr Jim McDannald, DPM, aka Big Jim Mac? At the beginning of January 2022, Jim and I thought it would be fun to create a podcast about the two things we loved most, Marketing & Marketing.

Each week we take turns interviewing each other. Jim interviews me on a particular marketing subject that I'm passionate about, and then on the alternative week, I turn the tables on Jim, and he gets to choose the topic.

Most episodes are less than 25 minutes long, making them easy to consume and grasp the BIG IDEA from each show. If you enjoy the Podiatry Legends Podcast, you will also enjoy the Podiatry Marketing Podcast.

12-Week Podiatry Business Reboot

Have you done the 12-Week Podiatry Business Reboot? It will change the way you think about your podiatry business.

235 - Career Transition with Kirsten Sinclair30 Nov 202200:50:11

Kirsten Sinclair is a Scottish podiatrist who qualified from Queen Margaret University in 2001. She believes that if you’re unhappy with any aspect of your podiatry career, you need to take action and change it.

Kirsten initially worked in the NHS; however, after falling pregnant with her first child, within the first 12 months of her employment, she was not allowed to return to the NHS part-time. She was given a choice; work full-time work or leave the NHS.

Kirsten decided to leave the NHS and instead developed a part-time home visit service to work around her children.

From Routine Care to MSK

In 2018, after her children had grown up, Kirsten decided to open her own stand-alone private practice, some 17 years after graduating, and as Kirsten puts it, “it’s never too late”.

However, after doing home visits and routine care for 17 years and not using her MSK knowledge, it did take some time for her to transition back into this area of podiatry.

She found attending biomechanical seminars and weekend workshops and asking questions, especially from her orthotic laboratory, was especially helpful in improving her MSK skills.

“If you want something bad enough, you will be prepared to do the work”.

Bigger is Not Always Better

Kirsten learnt that owning her own business can be stressful and bigger is not always better. You have far more responsibilities and stress when you expand and take on more team members.

The stress of business ownership was difficult, and she often asked herself if going bigger was a good idea or if she should have stayed small and continued to work as a solo practitioner.

“I think a lot of podiatrists as themselves this same question”.

Therapeutic Lasers

In 2019 Kirsten was introduced to therapeutic lasers (aka photobiomodulation therapy/PBMT), which changed everything for her. Before this, she only used shockwave therapy but found laser therapy far more effective.

In 2021 she started working for Celtic part-time and then in January 2022, decided to transition again from business ownership and take on a full-time position as a clinical demonstrator and trainer, teaching others how to use MLS laser to benefit their patients, their practice and them as practitioners.

If you think entering business awards is a bit WANKY, we're here to tell you it is the exact opposite. Joe Keain is the co-owner of Pod Fit Podiatry, and he was named Australian Podiatrist of the Year at this year's Allied Health Awards. Joe and I encourage all podiatrists to step up and positively represent the podiatry profession when the opportunity arises.

This year there were over one hundred podiatrist submissions, and in this episode, Joe explains the five key questions he had to answer that formed a major part of his application.

We also discuss the benefits of entering awards, whether you win or not, and how to use the awards process in your marketing to build social proof with your community.

Kent Sweeting graduated from the Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, in 2004 and over his career, he has kept saying yes to every opportunity presented to him.

This 'just say yes' attitude has been integral to developing his career from clinical podiatrist and owner of Performance Podiatry & Physio to researcher and eventual owner of Queensland Orthotic Lab.

In this episode, we discuss the following:

  • Why he decided to leave a well-established running clinic to pursue a broader scope of podiatry practice.
  • Setting up his practice with his brother.
  • The tough learning curve of business ownership.
  • Patients can wear you down over time.
  • Buying the Queensland Orthotic Lab.
  • Why saying yes made a huge impact on his career.
  • Saying YES leads to other opportunities. Some you don't see coming.

328 - Thirteen Things You Would Do Differently21 Jun 202400:33:09

Have you ever considered what you would do if another highly skilled podiatrist opened a podiatry business directly opposite your business?

You should ask and answer this question every year with your team. Of course, the chance of this happening is slim, but I have seen it happen many times.

But why wait for it to happen? Why not think about it now and have a game plan in place? You never know; some of the ideas you come up with can be actioned immediately. Why wait?

This episode has been produced off the back of Ep 74 from the Podiatry Marketing Podcast

227 - Bigger Is Not Always Better with Dr Brandon Macy05 Oct 202200:45:09

Dr Brandon Macy is the owner of Clark Podiatry Centre in Clark, New Jersey, and he has run a very successful solo practice for the past 41 years. As his business grew, he did consider employing another podiatrist; however, bigger is not always better, so he decided not to go down that path and instead focus on training his team and making his business more efficient.

Within his business, he has also established a niched paediatric practice called the New Jersey Children's Foot Health Institute, and even though he is a solo practitioner, his business joined the New Jersey Podiatric Physicians & Surgeons Group (a supergroup) in 2014.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Not getting overwhelmed as the business grows.
  • How and why he set up a niched paediatric business within his primary business.
  • The benefits of joining a supergroup.
  • Why do you need to connect and network with others, especially as a solo practitioner?
  • The importance of finding your patient's WHY. Why do they have a foot problem?
  • How coaching helped him establish his niche.
  • How you can run a solo business and still have a life.

226 - Valuing & Backing Your Podiatry Skills with Dr Richard Chasen28 Sep 202200:52:22

For the sake of the podiatry profession, every podiatrist needs to start valuing what they do. They need to back their knowledge and skills when treating foot and ankle problems, and they should never take a backward step when dealing with other healthcare providers.

My guest, Dr Richard Chasen, is the owner of The Lower Limb Clinic in Melbourne, Victoria, and was previously on Ep 99 – More Than Just A Pod; on this episode, we discuss why most podiatrists live the life that happens to them instead of the life they want.

Misconception

When it comes to your career, you have the choice to do what you want, and GPs should not control you, nor should they be in a position not to make you sink or swim.

Also, there's a misconception that allied health professionals are a diluted version of a GP. This is not true; we are all professionals in our own right.

If you don’t believe in what you do, why should your patients?

Communication & Discounts

What you say to a patient only accounts for 8% of your communication; the rest comes from your body language and facial expressions.

If you're giving patients a discount or spending more time with them each consultation, it's useless unless the patient is aware you are doing this. If you provide them with a discount, point it out. If you're spending more time with them, over and above what you usually would allow, make sure they know this.

You lose value in the consultation by not communicating all the extra things you for them that they may take for granted.

Extra Time May Be Hurting Your Business

When you spend extra time with patients because you do not have a patient booked immediately afterwards, do you know it could annoy your patient, especially if they need to be elsewhere?

They may be asking themselves, is this going to happen every visit? Or, they get used to the extra time, and when you cut it back to the correct amount of time, they will think they've been underserviced.

Price Rises

As soon as you put your prices up, it adds value to your skill set. Patients chasing the cheapest podiatrist don't care who they see or the quality of the work.

If you value who you are, your patients will value you as well.

How Do Podiatrists Run A Bulk-Billing Business?

The only way a podiatrist can run a bulk-billing practice is by not knowing their numbers or not understanding how revenue and profits work.

Or, they've set the bar so low for themselves and over time, they have devalued who they are and what they do.

You can't say you're the best at treating a particular problem in the foot and ankle and then not charge correctly. Incongruency will kill your business.

Side Note

If you needed neck surgery and one surgeon said they could do it for $4500 and the other said they would do it for $450, who would you choose and why?

7 Things That Happen When You Charge More?

  1. You provide a better patient experience.
  2. You can attend better CPD (National and International)
  3. You can attend more events, conferences and workshops.
  4. You'll have more up-to-date equipment.
  5. You can offer more treatment services.
  6. You'll have a happier team.
  7. You'll be a more content employer, parent and partner.

If you think you’re not worth what you’re charging, then you’re right.

Give Patients an Experience

When patients visit your podiatry business, you need to make their visit an experience, not just a transaction. No different to going to a top-end restaurant.

Be the Best

If you want to be the best in the foot and ankle space, and you think podiatrists are the best profession to look after that space, you have a responsibility to do a couple of things:

  1. You've got to be the best at it, and you've got to know your stuff when it comes to treating the foot and ankle.
  2. You've got to communicate with other people (referrers, etc.) to help them understand that their patients are better off seeing you because you're in the foot and ankle space all the time.
  3. Educate the patient to help them understand the importance of their treatment.

Final Tip

You have a responsibility to be a podiatry futurist. Where will the world be, and what is the next stage for podiatry? Try and skate to where the puck is going to be, not where it's been.

224 - Forensic Leadership with Paul Kinkaid16 Sep 202200:43:27

When a podiatry business grows, you end up with a team, and that team needs to be led, and how you lead them will leave both positive and negative traces, which are referred to as Green Traces (positive) and Red Traces (negative).

In this episode, I am joined by Paul Kinkaid, an Executive Leadership Coach and retired Commando-trained Lieutenant Colonel in the British Army, and we're discussing how private practice owners need to step into the leadership domain if they want to thrive.

We also discuss:

  • The difference between leadership and management.
  • Self-awareness.
  • The best leaders are always studying leadership.
  • How you lead could be based on elements you've seen before, but did these examples of leadership leave positive traces (Green) or negative traces (Red) on you?
  • Not asking questions results in the Law of Unintended Consequences.
  • Difference between servant leadership and servile leadership
  • A good leader will have a clear INTENT (Goal) and they need to paint this picture of the future for their team to follow.
  • How a business benefits by creating leaders instead of followers.
    • Followers will ask you constantly what they should do next, whereas leaders will tell you what they intend to do next and will keep moving forward.
    • Creating leaders around you creates more space in your diary and mind, allowing you to be more strategic in your thinking.
  • Managing processes is not leadership.
  • Born leaders are doing leadership by default. This is also no good leadership.

Three guiding principles of forensic leaders:

  1. Lead from a position of care.
  2. Notice people and, where appropriate, give recognition or notice when they are struggling and lean in and help out. That’s when the leader gets their hands dirty. They see patients when it's busy and when required, they get back on the tools.
  3. Be appropriately transparent and communicate your intent - your vision, your purpose, and your strategy in a compelling way so everyone understands their part in the plan and therefore they’re going to get on board.

Doing the right thing always leaves GREEN traces on people and doing the wrong thing will leave RED traces.

The standard you walk past is the standard you accept.

You’ve got to sweat the small stuff; you’ve got to look at the details; they are that important.

When you start leading poorly and leaving red traces on your team, the good people will leave because they back themselves to get another job, and the less than good people will stay. This is damaging for your business.

Forensic Leadership - pay attention to the guiding principles and traces.

4 Key Questions

  1. What will happen if I do it?
  2. What won’t happen if I do it?
  3. What will happen if I don’t do it?
  4. What won’t happen if I don’t do it?

When you put the answers to all these questions through the forensic leadership filter, what green and red traces are going to be left and what is the impact on my people, then you know what the right decision is.

Every successful podiatrist leaves clues, green traces, and every unsuccessful podiatrist also leaves clues, red traces.

If your employer says the wrong thing in a meeting, you can easily say that was a bit red, or if was very red, you could say that left a really big red trace. As an employer, you don’t want to leave red traces.

Habit stacking

When you get up in the morning, what version of you has gotten up? Sometimes you’re just grumpy, or maybe you get cut off on the road on the way to work. Be aware of how you feel, as this will influence your leadership ability that day.

Make leadership deliberate, conscious and intentional.

Think about how you lead, the traces you leave on other people, and the traces that are left upon you, and you have to own those traces.

Combine that with a compelling narrative that gives the intent in a clear and compelling way you will have a fantastic team.

223 - AFTER the Richie Brace with Dr Doug Richie08 Sep 202200:46:10

Before inventing the Richie Brace, Dr Doug Richie was content growing and developing his sports podiatry practice; however, that all changed when podiatrists started using it to treat Post Tib Dysfunction.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • What happened AFTER the Richie Brace was invented.
  • The changes it made to his career.
  • How he pivoted and embraced this change to create a booming podiatry business that was no longer sports-focused.
  • The positives of changing your patient demographics.
  • Reinventing yourself, which many podiatrists do about 15 years into their careers.
  • Leaving your EGO at the door.

How did the Richie Brace become so popular?

It was all by accident; there was no self-promotion. Dr Doug Richie was unexpectedly invited to speak at many conferences and, along the way, developed a series of educational lectures and workshops on the correct use and application of the Richie Brace and Post Tib Dysfunction treatment.

Make sure you listen to Episode 216 - Before the Richie Brace

222 - Practice Resilience with Emily Ball31 Aug 202200:52:14

Emily Ball is the Founder of Active Step Foot & Ankle Clinic Ltd, Hampshire UK, which she started in 2013. Over eight years, she developed a great, profitable business; however, it took an immediate downturn following the shock diagnosis of leukaemia in her 3-year-old in November 2021.

Because Emily was forced to step away entirely from her practice, her business experienced the devastating impact of the absence of leadership on her business.

Emily was quick to learn that there is a big difference between business coaching and business leadership.

It's important for your team to come to you with plans and solutions, instead of only coming to you with problems. That's when you know you've developed true leaders.

221 - (Part 2) Medico-Legal Aspects of Practice & Dispute Resolution27 Aug 202200:47:57

Did you know podiatrists under investigation perform at 45-55% of their capacity? And are you aware that your consent form does not immediately protect you? In part two, Dr Cam Wareham digs deeper into the medico-legal aspects of practice, how it can affect you professionally and steps you should take to avoid being sued.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Are universities to blame?
  • The problem with sticking with treatment modalities that don't work.
  • Delayed Suffering.
  • What do you do if there is a payout and you've been found responsible?
  • The emotional rollercoaster.
  • How to psychologically survive.
  • Note taking the right way, so the patient fully understands what treatment you are undertaking and the full extent of complications.
  • Why a consent form is not good enough?
  • The dispute resolution process.
  • Vicarious Liability and why employers need to have standard operating procedures.

220 - (Part 1) Medico-Legal Aspects of Practice & Dispute Resolution with Dr Cam Wareham18 Aug 202200:50:59

Regardless of how competent you are, there is still a real possibility that one day a patient could blame you for their pain and suffering and want to take legal action against you.

Dr Cam Wareham is known to many in Australia and the UK as a Consultant Podiatric Surgeon and Professor in Healthcare for the University of Sunderland. He previously was Head of School at the University of Western Australia.

In addition to this, he has a Master of Law in Dispute Resolution and in this episode, we're going to dig into his knowledge in the area of medical-legal aspects of podiatry and what he does as a medical expert in legal cases.

Topics of Discussion:

  • What is negligence and what is not?
  • Balance of probabilities.
  • Duty and standard of care.
  • Some patients are more high-risk than others.
  • The power of communication.
  • Dispute Resolution and Arbitration.
  • Top Three Reasons Patients Sue:
    • They don't want what happened to them to happen to anyone else.
    • They want an apology and want to understand why it went wrong.
    • Compensation.

Dr Cam Wareham also explains two real-life examples. One is a patient with an ingrown toenail, and the other is a patient with heel pain.

214 - What to Look for When Buying A Clinic with Dr Patrick McEneaney07 Jul 202200:49:10

What should you look for when purchasing an existing podiatry business?

My guest, Dr Patrick McEneaney, is the owner of Northern Illinois Foot & Ankle Specialists, and over 2.5 years, he has grown his podiatry empire from three (3) clinics to fifteen (15) clinics. In this episode, he shares lessons learned and pitfalls to avoid.

Patrick was also my guest on Ep 048: Rapid Business Expansion (Nov. 2019), Ep 074: 8 Business Tips During COVID-19 (April 2020) and Ep 108: You Cannot Manage Ten Clinics Yourself.

We covered the following topics:

  • Create a business model for podiatrists that want to sell and for others that want to sell and stay on.
  • The benefits of a gradual transition of new ownership.
  • Developing a purchasing checklist, which grows with each purchase.
    • Overheads and expenses.
    • Looking at existing competitors.
    • The size of the town and the number of existing podiatrists.
    • Demographics of the neighbourhood.
    • What services do you have that can easily be introduced will quickly add to the revenue and profits.

211 - Jason McAninly Physical & Mental Road to Recovery14 Jun 202200:34:29
In 2020, Jason McAninly was crossing the road with a friend when a car ran a red light and ploughed directly into them. After being thrown 12 metres from the impact, Jason suffered multiple lower limb ligamentous injuries, fractures, hand and arm injuries, and a fractured lower back.

In this episode, Jason explains not just the physical hurdles he had to overcome to get back to work but also the mental struggle, made worse by his marriage breaking down and long periods of isolation during Covid.

We also discuss:

  • Learning to prepare for things that can go wrong
  • Understanding mental health.
  • Intrusive Thoughts: We all have them.
  • A mental health injury should be treated just like any other injury. It takes time.

If you want to connect with Jason, you can find him on LinkedIn and Instagram at @jmcpodiatry.

210 - Why I Left Podiatry (Part 2)09 Jun 202200:54:17
There's a big concern that too many podiatrists are leaving the profession, so it was suggested that I track down and interview a few of them and ask WHY they have left the profession.  If you missed Episode 209 (Part One), I suggest going back at some stage and listening to it.

At the end of this episode, I share my thoughts and takeaways from each of my five guests.

209 - Why I Left Podiatry (Part 1)03 Jun 202200:58:08
A friend recently asked me, why do you think so many podiatrists leave the podiatry profession? I did have an opinion; however, instead of sharing my thoughts, why not ask the podiatrists themselves?

So over the past three months, I interviewed several ex-podiatrists, and I think I have gathered some fascinating information that needs to be shared.

I want everyone to be aware that the purpose of this episode and next week's episode (Ep 210) is to shed some light on this problem and, hopefully, find some solutions.

Sarah O'Connell is the owner of Momentum Foot & Ankle Specialists in Oranmore, Galway, Ireland, and is a lecturer at the National University of Ireland with a focus on orthotic manufacturing.

Sarah was immediately on my radar after seeing her listed as a speaker at the most recent online OSGO Foot & Ankle Show. She talked about Utilising Orthotic Therapy in a Painful Pes Vavus Foot & Ankle.

In this episode, we discuss:
  • Her journey into sports podiatry.
  • Becoming a sports podiatrist was always her plan; however, she was advised against it.
  • Understanding biomechanics did not come easily and was initially very frustrating.
  •  Having great mentors and having them challenge you.
  • Going out of your way to learning the skills you do not have.
  • The highs and lows of setting up her own business.
  • The importance of having friends in and out of the profession.

"Be inspired by the people you associate with".

207 - Leticia Moran is My Graphic Designer19 May 202200:39:22

Have you ever looked at a competitor's podiatry business and thought, geez, everything about their business seems so professional? There's a good chance your potential patients are thinking the same thing if you have.

When it comes to developing your business brand and credibility, I highly recommend engaging the services of a top-notch Graphic Designer.

Today, my guest is Leticia Moran from Moran Creative, who has been responsible for all my current logos, etc., over the past eight or so years.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Brand Consistency.
  • Developing your brand asset.
  • What Fiverr does not offer.
  • Credibility with your patients and instilling confidence.
  • Logo orientation and Social Media.
  • What is a STYLE GUIDE?
  • Using a graphic designer sooner rather than later saves you money and time long-term.
  • Patients can tell when you've gone cheap; it's obvious.
  • Developing a new brand versus re-branding.
  • Knowing when it's time to re-brand and leave the past behind.

"Your logo is a reflection of your business confidence, professionalism and integrity".

Final Tip

When you approach a graphic designer, think about your ideal outcome. Do you want a redesign or a new logo and approach them with a clear plan.

"To not use your knowledge is a little bit insulting to our profession".

205 - Mentoring Before Money with Blake Withers05 May 202200:57:01

Blake Withers works at Achieve Podiatry, located within a speciality sports medicine clinic in Newcastle, NSW. Most of his patients are musculoskeletal, which feeds into his particular interest in runners and paediatrics.

He also works at Newcastle University as a lecturer in Podiatric Biomechanics and as a clinical educator.

Blake was also on Episode 116: How First-Year Graduates Think In 2020

In this episode, we discuss:
  • Why mentoring should come before money if podiatry is your career and not just a job.
  • Your new employer may not be in a position to pay you more. You need to understand how numbers work within a podiatry business.
  • Owning up to your mistakes when they happen.
  • You are never going to be a weapon immediately after leaving university.
  • Experience teaches you how to communicate and ask good questions to your patients.
  • The Five Chimps Theory.
  • Why you should make an effort to work with more experienced podiatrists in the areas of podiatry you want to know more about or get better at.
  • Feedback from your employer improves and sharpens your skills.

When two podiatrists talk about a concept with open dialogue and an open mind to new information, they both benefit.

You can connect with Blake via his Instagram page @TheSportsPodiatryProject, and this is also the name of his podcast.

204 - Patient Centred Practice with Dr Nicole Graf Freels29 Apr 202200:48:41

Dr Nicole Graf Freels is the owner of Lexington Podiatry in Kentucky, USA, and she is a true inspiration and trailblazer when it comes to doing things differently. She has developed a business that is 100% patient-centred and focused on every touchpoint.

This care and attention to detail with her patients is why her business has 1745 Google Reviews with a 4.9 Star-Rating.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Developing team culture and making sure every new team member fits as they should.
  • Making an effort to make every patient feel special.
  • VIP - Very Individualised Person

It doesn't always take a lot of money to make a patient feel special, it just takes a lot of intention, planning and management.

  • Treat your team as good as you treat your patients and keep them happy because everyone is hiring.
  • Benchmarking and setting up consistent protocols.

What is Mod Pod?

Mod Pod is short for Modern Podiatrist, a hand-crafted product range designed for podiatry patients.

203 - Disgusting Man, Ladies Beware with Jonathan Small22 Apr 202200:41:50

Jonathan Small is the owner of Health First Foot & Gait Clinic in Southam, UK, and today we're talking about the importance of paying attention to online reviews.

Some years ago, Jonathan was the victim of a scathing 1-Star review, which said, Disgusting Man, Ladies Beware, and it wasn't until someone else pointed it out to him that he knew about it.

"There are a lot of online review platforms and you need to be paying attention".

If you get a negative review, use it as motivation to get more positive reviews. It's not the end of the world, but it can be more damaging if you don't respond.

Amazon

Amazone is one of the world's largest companies, and it only has a 1.8-star review.

  • 51 % 1-Star
  • 31% 5-Star

Only 18% of their reviews are in the middle (2-4 star reviews). Therefore it's clear that reviews are polarising, it's usually very good or very bad.

Do More Reviews Yourself

You should make it a habit of writing more reviews yourself because it will keep reviews fresh in your mind, which means you are more likely to talk about reviews with your patients.

"It’s up to you to manage each platform because it’s out there for all to see."

202 - A Podiatry History Lesson with Dr Timothy Shea14 Apr 202201:01:11

Dr Timothy Shea has been practising podiatry for 50-years. At 76-years of age, he is as passionate today about podiatry as he was when he was a student at the California College of Podiatric Medicine, learning from the early legends of our profession, Drs Merton L. Root, William P. Orien and John H. Weed.

In this episode, we discuss:
  • Joint manipulation is not new; it's been around since the late '70s.
  • The Golden Years of biomechanics and learning from the best.
  • The birthplace of orthotics and the first laboratory in the US.
  • What is a functional orthotic?
  • Maintaining your passion for podiatry long-term.

"Understanding biomechanics comes from a combination of mastering the basics, plus experience".

New Theories

All the new theories in biomechanics are derived from the old theories. They've taken the basics of biomechanics and converted them to specific areas—for example, the biomechanics of sports medicine.

Final Tips

Students: Take every opportunity to visit as many podiatry businesses as you can because you may never get the chance once you graduate.

First 10-years: Learn all the basics of podiatry really, really well. Build a strong foundation.

Next 10-years: Niche into areas you're really good at and become the best. You'll probably develop four niches over your career.

"You must be a doctor at all times, not just at work because that's what everyone else expects. It's about protecting your reputation."

201 - Special Guest: My Wife Christine Franklin06 Apr 202200:43:33

In this episode, my wife, Christine Franklin, joins me to discuss the benefits of working with your significant other.

We worked together for over 20-years, and of course, we had ups and downs, fears and doubts, but we overcame all these challenges to create multiple successful podiatry businesses.

"Your business success will be much faster when you have someone in your corner, and you will have a far happier family life. It's all about balance".

We have heard friends say they could never work with their husband or wife; they would kill each other, but we're proof that that's not always the case.

199 - Dr Ivan Bristow WRITING Letters Reports24 Mar 202200:39:43

Dr Ivan Bristow was a guest on Episode 168, discussing Foot Dermatology; however, today, we're having a conversation about the benefits of writing letters, reports and referrals to our colleagues, professionals referrers and patients.  Writing a referral and receiving a reply can be used as evidence is an opportunity for self-learning and forms part of your CPD.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Writing is an artform we don't want to lose.
  • Why podiatrists need to write more letters, reports and referrals.
  • Using it with patients as a communication tool.
  • It is a great way to connect with other podiatrists who may have a skill you don't currently have.
    • Using Facebook to find patient answers is not the best method of learning.
  • Use letters as part of your MARKETING.
  • The importance of checking your grammar.
  • It can be beneficial to give your patients a copy of their referral letters.

A patient telling their GP that you want something examined or investigated further has no power, however giving the patient a letter to way under the nose of their GP is very powerful.

195 - Laura Welsh My DREAM Clinic24 Feb 202200:45:03
Laura Welsh is from Glasgow, Scotland, and she is the owner of two distinctly different podiatry businesses.

One business, A Step Ahead Podiatry, is purely a home-visit based business, while the other business is her dream clinic, called La Preme Clinic.

La Preme Clinic is a brick and mortar business targeting high-end podiatry services.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Lessons she learnt from her first business that she needed to correct in her dream clinic.
    • Valuing her time.
    • Stock control.
    • PRICING her fees correctly.
  • The benefits of clearly displaying her fees and having a New Patient Registration Fee?

Final Tip:

Write down your goals and what your dream clinic will look like without any money constraints. Then, when things get tough or off track, go back and look at your goals and revisit the dream.

194 - Dr Kent Hungerford Why Podiatrists Are Hesitant to Adopt New Technology17 Feb 202200:43:05

Dr Kent Hungerford is a Podiatric Surgeon from South Coast Foot Surgery in Shellharbour, New South Wales. This episode discusses why podiatrists are hesitant to adopt new technology.  It's not just podiatry; the whole allied health professional is a little hesitant. On average, it takes 17-years from intervention discovery to widespread implementation.  Shockwave has become very popular over the last 10-years; however, it was known around 40-years ago, and laser therapies have been in existence since the 1980s.

We also talk about:
  • The fear of trying something too early and being judged.
  • Social proof.
  • Looking at research.
  • Post-graduate education.
  • The price to adopt new technology can be a barrier.
  • Education is also a barrier, therefore put money into training and remove this barrier.
  • How to afford new technology and why you need to do this.

"The business needs to work for you so you can work for others to get them the outcome that they need in the most efficient way.”

Final Tip

It's up to you to look for better outcomes for your patients. Be open-minded, look at the research and see what is coming through. If you're unsure why someone is using something or if it works, find someone passionate about it and ask them questions.

193 - Joe Keain Transitioning from Employee to Business Owner09 Feb 202200:38:36

Joe Keain is a co-owner of PodFit Podiatry in Adelaide, South Australia. In the episode, we discuss his transition from being an employee to becoming a business owner in partnership with his former employer.

PodFit Podiatry was not Joe's first employer. He initially worked for a podiatry business providing home care services. After 12-18 months, Joe was ready to leave the podiatry profession, but that all changed when he obtained employment with a business that challenged, inspired and excited him.

We also discuss:

  • Losing MSK skills.
  • Enjoyment being part of a team.
  • How he asked to become a part-owner in the business.
  • The 12-month transition to business ownership.
  • The different mindset of an employee compared to an employer.
  • Leading by example and not cutting corners.

Tip for Employees - Employers, notice if you're doing well and if you're not doing well. You've got to be supportive and add value to the team. Work hard and make sure you do the one-percenters.

Tip for Employers - Don't be afraid to put trust in others and let somebody else into your business.
