57. ARNOLD vs. GROUP PROJECTS [S3,E16 - “Part Time Friends”/”Biosquare”]19 Aug 202500:36:46

In what is perhaps the darkest pair of episodes in the show’s canon, we take a step away from wholesome, grounded slice-of-life storytelling in order to take a detour to see just how poisonous Arnold’s closest relationships can be.

55. DOWN WITH THE MAYFLOWER [S3,E14 - “Arnold’s Thanksgiving”]20 Nov 202400:41:20

After discussing which characters would bend which elements in the Avatar universe, we look at what is perhaps the strongest holiday-focused episode in the show’s run, particularly due to it’s excellent and well-earned pairing of Arnold and Helga, along with an uncompromising portrayal of the ever-present conflict between expectations and reality surrounding the holidays. Also in today’s discussion: weird unconventional Thanksgiving recipes

54. MAUVENGERS MAUSSEMBLE! [S3, E13 - “Arnold & Lila”/”Grand Prix]17 Oct 202400:41:24

The show continues its stellar track record of portraying the universality of unrequited childhood crushes as Michael recalls his own trials and tribulations with like-liking girls and them not like-liking him back. Afterward, we get an action-packed, high-octane thrill ride while discussing Eugene and color theory as well as offensive European stereotypes.

53. COACH WITT-ADVERB RETURNS! [S3,E12 - "Best Man"/"Cool Party"]01 Oct 202400:42:30

We spend way too much time reading into the unseen specifics of Coach Wittenberg & Tish’s relationship and question the community's perception of their union, and later discuss arbitrary elitism and classism perpetuated by none other than one Rhonda Wellington Lloyd!  Also: Chicken wing eating techniques & Final Destination. Oh, and adverbs. Lots and lots of adverbs.

We strap in for a wild ride through the Jolly Olly Man’s heart of darkness in addition to sharing our theories about how such a disgruntled purveyor of frozen treats came to be. After that, we are served a piece of slice-of-life greatness when Harold gets to explore his softer side.

50. COULDA, SHOULDA, WOODSPERSON-DA [S3,E9 - “Aptitude Test”/”Oskar Gets A Job”]30 May 202400:41:12

The potential for gainful employment is in the air this week as we discuss how unrealistic and potentially harmful it is to use standardized testing as a means to tell 9 year-old children what the course of their future will be. Also, Oskar is still a deadbeat slacker. All this and more, including: reminiscing on our own childhood career aspirations, the Universal Studio Tour, the 1990s’ fascination with paperboys, and polka-dotted boxer shorts.

Afterward, we not only sing the praises of Mr. Hyunh’s commitment to both artistic and personal integrity, but we also spend way too much time quoting “Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story”.

Season 3 gets off to a fantastic start when Helga embarks on a hijinks-filled heist to recover an embarrassing answering machine message (remember those?) detailing her love for Harold, while Harold continues to make a case for himself as perhaps the most lovable member of PS 118's student body as he has a meet-cute with his love of meat.

Arnold’s attempts to preserve his vision for a parade float honoring the city from Big Bob’s soulless interference brings up a rather timely discussion of the conflict between art and commerce. It’s an age-old tale of the haves versus the have-nots when Arnold & Gerald face off against the deliciously pretentious Rex Smythe-Higgins III in a rousing display of maritime mayhem. Afterward, Arnold & his friends try to wrap their heads around the adult world of labor disputes as they try to save their summer vacations.

38. EUGENE IS THE ORIGINAL STAN [S2, E17 - "Eugene Goes Bad"/"What's Opera, Arnold?"]12 Jan 202401:01:30

Years ahead of its time, the story of Eugene coping with his hero The Abdicator not being what he seems shows us what happens when fandom goes wrong and reminds us to keep our parasocial relationships in check. It is then followed up with an all-time classic that reminds us that opera is anything but a snooze fest, especially when bangers from Carmen are on the setlist.

37. WITTENBETA [S2, E16 - "Coach Wittenberg"/"Four Eyed Jack"]09 Jan 202400:49:41

Arnold enlists the help of Coach Wittenberg, giving him a shot at redemption as a mentor and a chance to prove himself to his estranged wife, all while possibly doing so in memory of his son Tucker who was possibly killed off-screen in a freak free throw accident (that’s our headcanon and we’re sticking to it). Afterward, we laud “Four Eyed Jack” as a dark horse standout of season 2, thanks to its striking horror aesthetic and a fun teamup dynamic between Arnold, Gerald and the Boarder Bros.

Absolute power corrupts absolutely, even for sweet kids like Phoebe. Meanwhile, Harold becomes a man in the eyes of the Jewish faith, while we reflect on just how much legwork '90s Nickelodeon did in earnestly educating kids about the basics of God's chosen people.

In his pursuit of upward mobility, Gerald falls victim to the predatory practices of multilevel marketing, a concept that has particular resonance for one of our hosts. Afterward, Michael & Sean can’t tell who’s more exasperated, Arnold as he tries to patch things up between Rhonda & Nadine, or Sean & Michael as they try to talk about Arnold as he tries to patch things up between Rhonda & Nadine.

30. S2,E9 - "Mudbowl"/"Gerald Moves Out"05 Oct 202300:36:30

It wouldn't be the mid-1990s without at least one episode of this show dedicated to Arnold and his underdog pals going up against the bigger and meaner kids in a winner-take-all game of sportsball, right? "Mudbowl" delivers on that promise and then some. Meanwhile, Gerald learns the hard way that the grass isn't necessarily greener within the walls of the Sunset Arms Boarding House. Does this crazy turn of events eventually give way to a warmhearted, sentimental lesson? The answer MAY surprise you.

29. S2,E8 - "Freeze Frame"/"Phoebe Cheats"03 Oct 202300:45:41

We again join Arnold & Gerald as they play junior sleuths to uncover a plot involving Mr. Green, Porkpie, Slick, and a few too many innuendos that either allude to killing someone or performing some sort of X-rated act. Nextly, in the real highlight of this offering, we sing the praises of the statue of Emily Dickinson, and theorize whether she is a vengeful spirit, or simply a manifestation of Phoebe’s insecurity and drive to be the best. Phoebe may have stolen the poem, but Ms. Dickinson undoubtedly steals the show.

In the show’s first pairing of Arnold & Sid, we learn that even for all of his Buddha-esque serenity, our favorite football head’s patience runs just as thin as the rest of us. Afterward, we realize that in their efforts to take a day off from school, Arnold & Gerald wind up karmically paying for their decision to skip out on Helga’s play all the way back in Season 1.

Afterward, we see what happens when Lila moves into town and elementary mean girls go too far. Lastly, we start our ongoing casting call to figure out who would play these iconic characters in a live-action shot-for-shot remake. 18. S1,E18 - "False Alarm"/"World Records" (feat. Kay)26 Oct 202201:04:28

PRESENTING TO YOU FOR YOUR LISTENING PLEASURE, OUR VERY FIRST IN-PERSON RECORDED EPISODE, INCLUDING A SPECIAL GUEST!

This week, we're joined by our good friend Kay to cover the introduction of who is perhaps the most chaotic and unhinged character of the entire "Hey, Arnold!"-verse: Thaddeus "Curly" Gammelthorpe. Therefore, it's only fitting that this is also the most chaotic and unhinged conversation we've had so far on this podcast (with a little help from adult beverages). Also, we get into the simultaneous boldness and triviality of setting/breaking world records, and consider whether Arnold intentionally puts his friends in harm's way in order to chase clout and personal glory. So, strap in, smear some peanut butter all over your hands, sharpen your Wankyland pencil and order yourself the world's biggest pizza puff, because you're in for a hell of an auditory ride.

17. S1,E17 - "Abner, Come Home"/"The Sewer King"13 Oct 202200:36:12

Sean & Michael reconcile with what is admittedly the redheaded stepchild of Season 1. The ethics and real world implications of domesticating a pig are pored over, the overall outlandishness of The Sewer King and his cavernous domain are taken to task, and there are several references to Anya Taylor Joy and "The Queen's Gambit".

Additionally, as of this posting, our show has been downloaded OVER 1000 TIMES! So, whether this is your first episode or your seventeenth, thank you for joining us on this journey. Truly.

16. S1,E16 - "Olga Comes Home"/"Sally's Comet"07 Oct 202200:42:37

First, we discover the only thing darker for Helga than living in Olga's shadow is sweet black revenge, while Michael discloses his own story of sulking in bed with the same song on repeat. In the second half, we ponder the inflation rates of cereal as Arnold, Grandpa Phil and Gerald embark on a quest that culminates in a truly wholesome moment of intergenerational bonding. 23 SKIDOO!!

13. S1,E13 - "Das Subway"/"Wheezin' Ed"14 Sep 202200:38:41

Would you rather be stuck in a dark subway tunnel, or go hunting for buried mafia treasure? It's back to back kid-ventures this week as we see for the first time how the gang is perceived by adult strangers, while we also consider the possibility that their excursion to Elk Island is an homage to the 1985 classic "The Goonies". Now, get out of your house, find yourself a big, open space and take a listen!

12. S1,E12 - "Benchwarmer"/"Cool Jerk"07 Sep 202200:43:11

Rather than spend too much time talking about the value of teamwork, integrity and the dangers of nepotism, we rightfully sing the praises of one Coach Wittenberg, who steals the show with his endearing blend of well-intentioned buffoonery and a questionable grasp of grammar and the English language. Afterward, we realize just how in over his head Arnold was in seeking older male mentorship from Frankie G, whom behind the veneer of Fonzie-esque cool lies a cold-blooded, manipulative criminal. We know it sounds like a bit much, but just trust the ball and listen. Thank you.

11. S1,E11 - "Arnold's Christmas"01 Sep 202200:32:32

It may be August for us, but it's Christmas for Arnold as he tries to find the perfect gift for Mr. Hyunh it what is undoubtedly one of the most heartfelt, touching stories in the entire series. The cast and crew wear their hearts on their winter coats, expertly blending tone, music and characterization to create a holiday classic that's right up there with the likes of It's A Wonderful Life, The Santa Clause, Love Actually, and even Jingle All The Way. That's right, you heard me.

9. S1,E9 - "Mugged"/"Roughin' It"16 Aug 202200:36:46

Our favorite football head falls prey to the cycle of violence after he gets "MUGGED" , while in the process, Sean and Michael clarify the true meaning behind "H.A.T.E Arnold!". Meanwhile, the boys marvel at the differing visual style of "Roughin' It" compared to Season 1 up to this point, in addition to speculating about just how many fart noises the sound designers had to choose from when editing Grandpa Phil's nighttime flatulence. So, whether you're making doody behind a tree like a big bear or you're just walking around trying to figure out where's the bus stop, tune in and enjoy!
