| Shrew! - Episode 2 - To Woo The Shrew | 17 Mar 2025 | 00:25:32 | |
Petruchio tells Hortensio he’s come to Padua to find a partner to give him renewed life after grieving the loss of his first wife. Hortensio tells him about Baptista’s daughter, Katherine, but warns him that she’s quite the shrew. Petruchio realizes he knows her father and is not put off. Hortensio agrees to provide an introduction if, in exchange, Petruchio presents him to Signior Baptista as a tutor for the object of his affection: Bianca. As they agree to the deal, Grumio announces the arrival of two other rivals vying for Bianca: Gremio and Lucentio, now disguised as Cambio. Hortensio introduces them to Petruchio and tells them of his intentions with Katherine, who once coupled will make Bianca available for marriage. Meanwhile, Katherine laments her isolation in her chamber at Baptista’s house. She impulsively frees her sister’s canaries from their cage to find the freedom she craves. When Bianca enters and sees what Katherine’s done, the two fight savagely until Signor Baptista arrives to break it up. He sends Bianca away and scolds Katherine, lamenting his struggles as a single father until he hears the arrival of Gremio, Grumio, Tranio (as Lucentio), Lucentio (as Cambio), Hortensio (as Licio) and Petruchio. Petruchio tells Baptista of his lineage and his desire to woo Katherine. Baptista says she’ll never agree but Petruchio persists, introducing Hortensio (as “Licio”), who he says will make inroads as her banjo tutor. The others go to great lengths to outdo each other as they compete for Bianca. Gremio presents a Latin tutor (Lucentio-as-Cambio) and Tranio-as-Lucentio claims to be the son of Vincentio, “the Tomato King”. Baptista welcomes them all to his house and wishes them luck with his daughters.

| Love's Labour's Lost - Episode 3 - Tonguing In French | 03 Jul 2023 | 00:30:12 | |
In a rehearsal room at the Howard Conservatory of Music, Don Armado debates the nature of love with Moth before releasing Costard from bondage to deliver a love letter he wrote to Jacquenetta. Costard celebrates his payment and is about to set off on his errand when Berowne hires him to deliver a love letter he wrote to Rosaline. Off campus, the Princess and her entourage admire the king performing dressage on his horse as they prepare to hunt. Costard arrives to deliver Berowne’s letter to Rosaline but accidentally delivers Armado’s letter, which Boyet reads out loud to the delight of all the ladies as they set off on the deer hunt. Later, the scholars Nathaniel and Holofernes critique the deer hunt on a bus ride back to campus. Jaquenetta gets on board and asks Nathaniel to read the letter Costard delivered to her out loud because she cannot read it herself. Holofernes realizes that the letter has been delivered to the wrong person. She tells Jaquenetta to bring it to the King. Jaquenetta sets off, taking Costard with her.

| Introducing...Everyday Shakespeare | 30 Jun 2023 | 00:47:22 | |
Introducing...Everyday Shakespeare. Hosts Caroline Bicks and Michelle Ephraim are Shakespeare professors and close friends who love to bond over the ways Shakespeare’s plays help them through their everyday dramas.
Episode 3: "Let's Talk About Sex"
Sex can be fun and exciting, but it also raises all kinds of issues about power, control, and freedom. In this episode, we’ll be looking at how people in Shakespeare’s day were understanding sexual anatomy, pleasure, and reproduction, and discuss how the debates and anxieties that surfaced back then connect to some of our present-day divisions. We’ll be using doctor-approved language—from multiple centuries—but we’ll also be talking about sexual pleasure and consent, and referencing scenarios that some may find difficult to hear. Listener discretion advised.

| Love's Labour's Lost - Episode 2 - Dance Beneath My Stockings | 26 Jun 2023 | 00:26:29 | |
Costard is put under the guard of Don Armado, who continues to dote on Jaquenetta. Meanwhile, the Princess, chauffeured by her Counsellor (Boyet) arrives on campus at Howard University in her Model T along with her Ladies-In-Waiting (Rosaline, Maria and Katharine). She sends Boyet to announce their arrival to the King of Navarre, who sends back word that he cannot house the Ladies under his roof but will provide shelter in a tent on campus, instead. The Princess is offended and demands that the King answer her father’s suit: that he return the land of Aquitaine to France. The King counters that her father has not paid him back the money he lent for her father’s war. The Princess accuses Navarre of lying and asks Boyet to provide proof of payment. Boyet says it will take another day for that proof to arrive. As they banter, Berowne tries to flirt with Rosaline, who turns him away. Dumaine and Longaville are smitten with Katharine and Maria, and ask Boyet for their names. He teasingly obliges. After the men depart, Boyet tells the Princess he believes the King is in love with her. She laughs it off as she strolls to their newly erected tent.

| Love's Labour's Lost - Episode 1 - All Kinds of Woman | 19 Jun 2023 | 00:29:42 | |
The King of Navarre gathers together with his best friends (Longaville, Dumaine and Berowne) in the library at Howard University where he gets them to agree that they will devote themselves entirely to their studies without dating or indulging in food, drink or sleep for three full years. Berowne protests and reminds the King that the Princess of France is going to arrive soon to plead a case on behalf of her ailing father. The King promises to handle the situation and Berowne agrees to stick with his vow despite his reservations. They decide they’ll amuse themselves during their downtime by laughing at the antics of Don Adriano de Armado, a visiting scholar from Spain who is hilariously full of himself. Almost as soon as the King’s proclamation is issued, Sir Anthony Dull delivers a letter from Armado accusing Costard, a groundskeeper at Howard, of having an affair with Jaquenetta, a young lady who lives nearby. The King punishes Costard with a week of fasting on bread and water. Meanwhile, Armado confesses privately to his young friend and confidante, a Custodial Assistant named Moth, that he is painfully in love with Jaquenetta and vows to win her affections.

King Alonso trudges through the rain-soaked island searching for any sign of his lost son. Gonzala does her best to comfort him over the derision of Antonia and Sebastian, who blame the King for his misfortunes and ridicule Gonzala’s optimistic idealism. Ariel arrives to cast a spell over Gonzala and Alonso, putting them to sleep under the guard of Sebastian and Antonia. Meanwhile, Caliban bristles at having to haul wood for Prospero until he hears the approach of Trinculo, the King’s jester, who he mistakes for one of Prospero’s demons. He hides under a cloak, which Trinculo discovers and uses as shelter from the rain. There, he finds Caliban, who he presumes from his stench is a strange mis-shapen creature from the island. Stephano, the King’s butler, drunk from the liquor that he found after the shipwreck, happens upon the pair and is joyfully reunited with Trinculo. Together, they get Caliban to drink liquor for the first time. In return, Caliban offers to be their devoted servant and renounces his loyalty to Prospero.

| The Tempest - Episode 1 - What's This? Moody? | 10 Apr 2023 | 00:29:39 | |
Twelve years after having been deposed in a coup, Prospero, the rightful Duke of Milan, uses magical powers with the help of his spirit servant, Ariel, to shipwreck his enemies who are en route home from the wedding of the King of Naples’ (Alonso’s) daughter to the Prince of Tunis. Prospero’s daughter, Miranda, frets over the fate of the voyagers, but Prospero reassures her that they are unharmed before telling her the truth about their history: His sister, Antonia, conspired with Alonso to overthrow Prospero, putting him out to sea with Miranda in a rickety ship in the hope that they’d drown. Fortunately, a noble citizen named Gonzala secreted some clothing, food and water onto the ship, along with Prospero’s most prized books, by which he practiced magic. After Miranda falls asleep, Prospero beckons Ariel, who he commands to help him with more tasks now that the storm has ended. Ariel resists, but Prospero reminds the spirit that he freed it from slavery to the evil witch, Sycorax, who ruled the island until Prospero took over. After he threatens to re-enslave Ariel, the spirit relents and agrees to do Prospero’s bidding. Once Ariel is gone, Prospero wakes Miranda to show her a wondrous sight…

Advice columns have been a part of our culture for almost as long as there have been newspapers to print them. People of all backgrounds have turned, anonymously to these sources of cultural wisdom for help with all manner of personal issues. There have been few advice dealers more prominent than Ann Landers and Abigail Van Buren a.k.a. Dear Abby, In the latter half of the 20th century, they were two of the most influential columnists in the word. But what you might not know about them is that in real life they were known as Esther and Pauline Friedman, twin sisters who counseled millions and hated each other's guts.

| Playing Anne Frank - The Drama Behind The Drama | 17 Feb 2023 | 00:29:14 | |
Using archival material and interviews with surviving cast and crew members, Forward executive editor Adam Langer presents a story that's never been told: the backstory of "The Diary of Anne Frank," the Pulitzer Prize-winning play and Oscar-winning film, and how this iconic work shapes those involved in performing it — including high school students putting the show on today. The Diary of Anne Frank, which debuted on Broadway in 1955 and then later toured the country, was one of the most influential plays of the 20th century, and a life-changing experience for many of those who saw it. It introduced millions of Americans to the Holocaust and its victims. But what did reenacting Anne's story mean to the people who created and acted in the play or the 1959 film? How did dramatizing her life affect their lives and careers? Who were they? In seven episodes, "Playing Anne Frank" weaves together stories of art and culture and, ultimately, deep humanity.

As Florizel proclaims his love for Perdita to all the guests at the Sheep Shearing festival (including his father and Camillo who are still in disguise), the Old Shepherd calls for their wedding to take place during the celebration. The unknown guest tries to persuade the young man to hold off until he’s told his father, or at least discussed it with him, but Florizel refuses, saying his father must not know anything about it. Enraged, Polixenes finally removes his disguise and condemns his son, Perdita and her father, threatening to disfigure Perdita and kill the Old Shepherd if either of them come near his son again, and to disown Florizel if he even mentions her name. After his father departs, Florizel insists that he will stay with Perdita. Camillo, however, sees an opportunity to bring Polixenes and Leontes back together and persuades Florizel and Perdita to flee with him back to Sicilia. As Camillo describes the plan, they come upon Autolycus celebrating his pickpocketing success and demand that he change clothes with Florizel so that he won’t be recognized on the road. Perdita agrees to go along with the plan.

As Perdita prepares for the sheep shearing feast, Florizel flirts with her and vows he’ll stay with her no matter what. Perdita is less carefree, fearing the repercussions that will come if the king discovers his son has been cavorting with someone beneath his station. Perdita’s father, the Old Shepherd, arrives and tells his daughter to greet their guests, including two strangers (Polixenes and Camillo, disguised as farmers), who banter with her about the flowers she admires. Florizel and Perdita proclaim their love for each other as the guests applaud and dance. Polixenes (in disguise) questions the Old Shepherd about the young man who’s wooing his daughter as two shepherdesses, Mopsa and Dorcas, squabble over the affections of the Shepherd’s son. A servant rushes in to announce the arrival of a peddler (Autolycus), who enters with a song. He wins over the crowd with his music and exotic wares as he secretly conspires to rob everyone at the party. The servant returns to announce the arrival of a group of acrobats she calls “hairy goat men”, who enter with a cacophony of shouts and drums.

| Measure for Measure - Bonus Content Episode 4 - Nat Cassidy - Pt 2 | 06 Dec 2022 | 00:45:56 | |
In Part Two of his interview, Nat Cassidy explains why the “rape room” got cut, why horror exists, why writing a script is forty-seven thousand times easier than writing a novel, why actors should celebrate the audition even if they don’t get the job, why Open Source Shakespeare is the adapters’ best friend, and why the elitism and classism of rehearsal rooms drove him from pursuing a career as a classical actor. Plus, a special easter egg for all you logophiles: listen for the word stichomythia in action!

| Measure For Measure - Episode 6 - Truth Is Truth | 02 Dec 2022 | 00:24:06 | |
Friar Lodowick (Duke Vincenzo) informs Isabella that Claudio has been put to death on Angelo’s orders. He persuades her to confront Angelo and ask for justice at the city gates, where Angelo and Escalus are to meet the Duke and surrender power back to him. At the Capitol, Escalus and Angelo try to make sense of the Duke’s imminent return and his strange request that they invite the people of the city to air their grievances at the changeover of power. Alone, Angelo privately regrets his actions. The Duke returns the monk's robes to Friar Thomas, and instructs him to carry out his plan at the Town Square. There, Friar Thomas meets Mariana and Isabella. As Angelo enters with the Duke, Isabella confronts him with accusations of his wrongdoings. Lucio vouches for her, but the Duke and Angelo cast aspersions on her story. The Duke orders Isabella’s arrest for defaming Lord Angelo but is interrupted by the entrance of Friar Thomas, who promises to absolve Angelo of all guilt with the testimony of a mysterious surprise witness.

We’re changing things up a bit today and bringing you a preview of a new podcast we’re enjoying and think you will, too. Where There’s a Will: Finding Shakespeare searches for the surprising places Shakespeare shows up outside the theater. Host Barry Edelstein, artistic director at one of the country’s leading Shakespeare theaters, and co-host writer and director Em Weinstein, ask what is it about Shakespeare that’s given him a continuous afterlife in all sorts of unexpected ways? You’ll hear Shakespeare doing rehabilitative work in a maximum security prison, helping autistic children to communicate, in the mouths of U.S. presidents, and even at the center of a deadly riot in New York City. In this preview, Barry takes us into California’s Centinela State Prison for a one-of-a-kind production of Shakespeare’s English history plays performed by incarcerated individuals. Barry asks: What makes Shakespeare a force of transformation and transcendence behind bars? Hear more from Where There’s a Will at https://podcasts.pushkin.fm/wtaw?sid=pop.

| Measure For Measure - Episode 5 - Death Is A Great Disguiser | 25 Nov 2022 | 00:27:19 | |
Isabella, Mariana and the Duke (disguised as Friar Lodowick) finalize their plans to trick Angelo. But even after the bed trick, Angelo persists in his plans to execute Claudio. Meanwhile, the Provost (Jailer) and Abhorson prepare to execute Claudio’s cellmate, the drunkard Barnardine, pressing Pompey into service as the executioner. Friar Lodowick (the Duke) convinces the Provost to send Barnardine’s head to Angelo and say it’s Claudio’s. Barnardine, however, refuses to die in drunkenness and Friar Lodowick (the Duke) refuses to force him to the chopping block. As luck would have it, another prisoner, the pirate Ragozine, dies overnight. The Provost suggests that Ragozine’s head be sent to Angelo instead of Barnardine’s. The Friar (Duke) celebrates the news and privately plans to write to Angelo of his imminent return to office. Plus, Pompey introduces his new podcast, “Bars”!

| Measure For Measure - Episode 4 - Angel On The Outward Side | 18 Nov 2022 | 00:41:23 | |
Duke Vincenzo, disguised as Friar Lodowick, visits Claudio in jail and inspires him to perceive his fate in a new light. Isabella arrives to tell her brother that Lord Angelo has demanded her body in return for Claudio’s life. Claudio tries to persuade his sister to agree to the bargain. Isabella leaves in disgust and despair. The Duke, having overheard their conversation, stops Isabella and tells her about a woman that Angelo wronged in the past. He convinces her to return to Angelo pretending to acquiesce to his demand, provided they meet in darkness and in secret. There, the wronged woman will take Isabella’s place, and Isabella’s honor will be preserved. Isabella agrees to the plan. As soon as she leaves, Elbow arrives with Pompey in custody for pimping. Lucio follows shortly afterward and refuses to bail him out. Once they’re gone, Lucio strikes up a conversation with the disguised Duke and proceeds to cast aspersions not only on Lord Angelo but on the Duke himself, saying he's a lech and a drunk, but that he hopes he’ll be back soon so they can be rid of Angelo. As soon as he leaves, the Provost arrives with Mistress Overdone in handcuffs. Escalus has her hauled off to jail for running yet another whorehouse, then asks the Duke, who she thinks is Friar Lodowick, about his visit with Claudio. He tells her Claudio is ready to die. Escalus praises his counsel and also describes the Duke as a good man. The Duke reflects on the state of affairs as he walks to visit Mariana, the woman who Angelo abandoned. There, he introduces Mariana to Isabella, who has arranged a meeting place with Angelo.
