I Was Born For This | 1000xRESIST Analysis (Ep. 113)27 Aug 202402:30:20
We sinned. We sinned and we are still paying for it to this day.

This week, Rick is joined by Dave (Tales from the Backlog) and Matt ("Fun" and Games) for a critical analysis of 1000xRESIST, a work that blends the aesthetics of theatre, philosophy, and lived, human experiences into a striking package. Part I features a broad, non-spoiler discussion on big picture ideas, themes, and mechanics, and continues into an in-depth analysis of the narrative. There's so much to say about this game, and it was clear it needed to be fast-tracked onto the show. We hope you enjoy!

Episode 19: At Dead of Night20 Oct 202101:47:45
Who says hotels are just for The Shining?

In this week's episode, Ben and Rick traverse the Seaview Hotel in the relatively recent horror game "At Dead of Night." This is a shorter episode with plenty of opinions from both parties; in addition to the game's mechanics, tropes, and story, we talk about what makes a horror game good to us, trick or treating, and even go down some tangents about the Star Wars Sequels. Peek around the corner, check down the hallway, and give this a listen!

Episode 18: The Cat Lady12 Oct 202103:01:39
"My name is Susan Ashworth. I live alone in this old two-bedroom flat. I rarely go outside. Some would say it's a lonely life... I only trust in my cats these days, and I will miss them dearly... but they will understand, like they always have. Teacup stays with me 'till the end. He watches me, as if he knew... Because, early tonight, I swallowed a whole bunch of pills. Any second now, I will be dead. I've only got one thing to say now. Thanks for nothing... Goodbye."

This week on Pixel Project Radio, Ben and Rick kick off their month of Spooky Games in October with The Cat Lady! They talk about the atmosphere and world building, music, and some real fumbles the game makes. All in all a great play, and we (sort of) recommend it! Check it out!

Knowing that Ben and Rick will cover Undertale, in all of its narrative, gameplay, and quirks...it fills you with DETERMINATION. We both have a lot of affection for this game, so we are thrilled to bring it to our platform!

Episode 16: Music in Video Games10 Sep 202101:31:01
For many of us, it's ingrained in our memories: opening up our very first game, booting it up, and hearing the iconic music greet and embrace us for a very special journey to come. Whether it's Super Mario, the Legend of Zelda, Final Fantasy, or more, music has become not only ubiquitous but integral to the creation and enjoyment of video games. In this episode, Ben, Rick, and Vince read off some of YOUR responses to your favorite music, talk about our very favorites, discuss the merit of engaging with culture, and more. And as you might expect, we edited a LOT of good music into this one.

Episode 15: Bioshock Infinite31 Aug 202102:57:31
"I don't understand."
"We don't need to, it'll happen all the same."
"Why?"
"Because it does. Because it has. Because it will."

Welcome to another episode of Pixel Project Radio! This week, join Ben and Rick as they talked, talk, and will talk about Bioshock Infinite! The two boys feel pretty differently about this game as a whole, and a LOT of healthy discussion is had! We speak to the game's narrative, talk about some theming choices and why we believe they did or didn't work, and Arrested Development makes an appearance. Oh, and did we mention the music, as usual for the Bioshock series, is terrific? Lots to love about this one - check it out!

Episode 14: Bioshock20 Aug 202102:27:57
"A man chooses...a slave obeys."

Join Ben, Rick, and Vince as they venture somewhere beyond the sea to cover one of the most well regarded games of all time, Bioshock. A game steeped in the logical conclusion of a hyper-free market and capitalist dystopia, you play as Jack, a silent protagonist who is navigating the landscapes of Andrew Ryan's underwater city of Rapture. In the episode, we talk about the world building and lore, how the ideology of Objectivism shaped the narrative, and of course *that* scene. Listen to this episode, would you kindly?

Episode 13: Firewatch11 Aug 202102:04:54
"I came out here for a breath of fresh air and adventure."

A lot of folks hear the phrase "walking sim" and roll their eyes, imagining boredom. Firewatch is a game that proves this notion to be false, as inside is a short little game filled with a atmosphere, ambiance, and character development. From the writers of "The Walking Dead" comes a game that explores themes of isolation, relationships, and honesty. Lots of good discussion in this one!

Mario? In my JRPG? It's more likely than you think.

This week, Rick is joined by Matt "Stormageddon" Storm ("Fun" and Games, Screen Snark, and more) to talk over Mario's first jaunt into JRPG japes: Super Mario RPG! Whether you grew up with the SNES version or are a newcomer with the (terrific!) Switch remake, this episode will be for you. We talk about the beginnings of this Square and Nintendo collaboration, the "Saturday Morning Cartoon" feel, version differences, and more. With a killer OST by the one and only Yoko Shimomura, you won't want to miss this - do it up!

Episode 3: The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask14 Apr 202102:09:20
"You've met with a terrible fate, haven't you?"

In this week's episode of Pixel Project Radio, Rick and Ben tackle a fan favorite of the Zelda series - and indeed both hosts' favorite in the franchise - Majora's Mask. Set on an incredibly tight schedule and making use of its predecessor's engine and models, Majora's Mask seemed doomed to fail from the start. Nevertheless, it defied the odds and produced one of the most depressingly charming games of the series. Which is the best dungeon? What's the best mask? Which is the best song in the game? "Evil Is Evil. Lesser, Greater, Middling, Makes No Difference. The Degree Is Arbitrary, The Definitions Blurred. If I'm To Choose Between One Evil And Another, I'd Rather Not Choose At All."

In episode 2, join Rick Firestone and Vince Buzzelli as they dive into CD Projekt Red's magnum opus - The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Episode 105: Super Mario Galaxy22 Mar 202401:35:16
Quick note: I reversed the instrumentation when describing the initial observatory theme. I didn't realize until it was too late. Sorry!

This week, Rick is joined by friend of the show Ryan (List Off Podcast) to talk all about the Wii smash hit, Super Mario Galaxy! Endlessly creative, this game was seen as the true successor to Super Mario 64 and kicked off a new era of creativity in the mainline Mario games. Join us as we talk about the dev history, how the mechanics compare to previous/future titles, the phenomenal score, and more. Genuinely had a great time - do it up!

Mario? In my pocket? It's more likely than you think.

This week, Rick is joined by Andre (Fine Time podcast) to talk all things Super Mario Land - that's right, all three! These were Mario's first forays into big time handheld gaming. Now that we're in 2024, how do they hold up? Each of these play so differently, and they all have their own distinct quirks and charms. The music to the physics to wacky enemies - we talk about it all. Do it up!

Episode 103: The Many Pieces of Mr. Coo29 Feb 202401:18:39
He gets chopped up, I'm sure he's beside himself. Haha! Do you get it? Because he is in pieces?!

In this episode, Rick is joined by friend of the show Mikey (0-2 Heroes) to talk all about The Many Pieces of Mr. Coo, a short, surrealist point and click adventure game! Created by animator Nacho Rodriguez (A Life Story, 2013), this game has you trying to get poor ol' Mr. Coo back together again after being lopped into thirds by a nasty croc. This game is light on narrative, so we get into the weeds about surrealism and why interpreting art can - and should! - differ between people.

Check out this interview with Nacho Rodriguez!

Episode 101: Final Fantasy IX, Finale26 Feb 202402:44:34
Thanks for giving me time to think. To keep doing what you set your heart on...It's a very hard thing to do...What to do when I felt lonely...That was the only thing you couldn't teach me. But we need to figure out the answer for ourselves... I'm so happy I met everyone...But I guess we all have to say goodbye someday. Everyone... Thank you. Farewell. My memories will be part of the sky...

The emotional conclusion to our Final Fantasy IX series is here. Rick and Eric begin by wrapping up some notable side quests throughout the game before tackling the rest of the narrative. The true nature of Zidane and Kuja's origins, the breakdown of our leader, the theories of the collective unconscious and the eternal return, and even the meaning of life...we talk about it all in this episode. Thank you, all, so much for being a part of this journey. I am so proud of what we have created.

Episode 100: Final Fantasy IX, Part 419 Feb 202402:11:21
Save your valediction, Steiner. We will live to see another day.

The saga continues, as once again Rick and Eric return to go through the entirety of Final Fantasy IX. This episode picks up after what we learned in Black Mage Village and sees us continue until we return there later - meeting a new Chocobo friend! This episode has us go through the beginning and majority of disc 3. Traditionally, this is seen as the part where the narrative tends to "drag" - but is that a fair assessment? Join us to find out. Do it up!

Episode 99: Final Fantasy IX, Part 311 Feb 202401:54:15
"You're very kind to use our words. But you already know what it means to live...and to die. You're asking about our friends who have 'died,' not 'stopped.'"

Note: This series has been extended to 5 parts rather than 4.

Our coverage of Final Fantasy IX continues! Rick is joined once again by Eric (The Unlockables Podcast) as they continue through the world of Gaia. This episode covers the story from the beginning of disc 2 until arriving at Madain Sari. This episode is about growth: Garnet learns that she must foster her own independance; Steiner and Beatrix begin to see the true colors of the crown; and Vivi learns of his origins in one of the game's most famous sequences. It gets heavy - we hope you enjoy!

We'll never forget you. We'll remember you every time we stand at your grave. And we won't let the fear of death, which each of us knows, stop us from living our lives. Because my friends will remember me when I'm here.

This is part 2 of 5 for our Final Fantasy IX analysis series. I am joined by Eric, from the Unlockables Podcast, who shares a deep love for this game. In this episode, we play from the beginning of the game up until the very end of disc 1. We meet the bulk of our cast, learn some disturbing truths about political powers, and much, much more.

Episode 97: Final Fantasy IX, Part 131 Jan 202400:48:48
You Taught Me That Life Doesn't Last Forever. That's Why We Have To Help Each Other And Live Life To The Fullest.

This is the beginning of a miniseries on Final Fantasy IX, one of the most important games in my life. This is the first time the show is revisiting a game that has been covered previously. In this personal essay, I explain why I made this choice, give some background history on the game, and speak about why this game means so much for me. This is part 1 of 5. We hope you enjoy this series - it has been deeply moving and rewarding to put together.

Episode 95: Gex: Enter the Gecko24 Dec 202301:22:03
This is like writing a podcast description at Terry Gross's house.

Get ready for some 90s pop culture quips and a whole lotta Tail Time, because this week Rick is joined once again by friend of the show Charlie Young to talk all things Gex: Enter the Gecko! This is the essence of the 1990s distilled: pop culture references, a mascot character with attitude, and questionable camera controls. This was a heck of a fun episode that really felt more like shooting the breeze with a good friend - and we hope you enjoy that kind of vibe here!

Gex 2 Version Differences, as mentioned in the episode

Episode 94: Lost Odyssey, Part 321 Dec 202302:04:42
"And when this too-long life of mine draws to a close," Kaim thinks, "I'd like to be sent off with the sound of bells like this if possible." Because he knows that day will never come, Kaim walks on, never stopping, never looking back. His long journey is far from over.

Our three-part series on Lost Odyssey comes to a close in this final installment. The threads of the plot come together in an exciting conclusion - but is it earned? What do Rick and guest host Thrak (The 3DO Experience) think about the ending as it relates to the thematic identity of the game itself? Tune in to find out - it's an exciting ride!

Episode 93: Lost Odyssey, Part 230 Nov 202301:56:08
It is the voice of the little girl from eighty years ago, ringing ever clear, sweet and innocent, declaring farewell to the man who will travel life forever...

We return for Part 2 of our miniseries on the Xbox 360 exclusive JRPG, Lost Odyssey. This episode is entirely story, and sees us pick up where we left off last time; if you are playing along, this episode covers up to and through the large "freezing" event that occurs on disc 2. We meet the rest of our party, learn more about Gongora's intentions, and begin to see the implications of the ever-shifting political landscape. Enjoy!

Episode 92: Lost Odyssey, Part 120 Nov 202301:58:23
Deep in the heart of someone seeking freedom is the fact of freedom denied...

This week, Rick is joined by friend of the show Thrak (The 3DO Experience Podcast) to dive into Lost Odyssey, somewhat of a hidden gem of a JRPG exclusive to the Xbox 360. What does it mean to live - to truly live - when one cannot die? This question lives at the core of the story being told - by none other than Hironobu Sakaguchi - as players take control of immortal Kaim Argonar, seeking for the stolen truth of his past. In part 1, we go over development history, the score, overall thematic concepts, and a portion of the story; if you're playing along, we conclude today's episode after getting captured by General Kakanas. This was such a blast to put together - do it up!

Episode 91: Tiny Tank10 Nov 202301:23:23
Little tank, big attitude.

This week on the show, Rick is joined once again by Charlie Young to talk about a forgotten PS1 mascot platformer: Tiny Tank! Starring a smart-mouthed sentient tank, Tiny Tank is a sort of hybrid third person shooter/platformer. Do the controls hold up? Does it deserve to be forgotten? Did we ever get tired of Tiny's constant, nonstop quips? Tune in to find out!

Episode 88: Resident Evil 7: Biohazard23 Oct 202302:10:03
Now with double the evil residents!

This week, Rick is joined by friend of the show and friend in real life Dustin to tackle Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. Rick's first Resident Evil game! RE7 pays homage to many of the horror greats that came before it, in both mediums of game and film. The result is a montage and cornucopia of tension and atmosphere (...and I didn't even THINK about playing it in VR!). We talk all things mechanics, lore, dev history, sound design, and more. Also, I do a bayou accent. It's bad, it's no good. Do it up!

Episode 87: Blair Witch10 Oct 202301:49:54
"Okay, here's your motivation: You're lost. You're angry in the woods. And no one is here to help you."

In this episode, Rick is joined by Ryan (List Off Podcast) to venture into the woods of Burkittsville, Maryland in the 2019 horror game Blair Witch. Set only a couple of years after the events of the movie, players are tasked with finding a missing 9-year old boy armed with nothing but a flashlight, a walkie talkie, and your trusty companion, Bullet the dog. Immersion and exploration play a huge role in this game, as Bloober Team - the minds behind Layers of Fear - flex their psychological horror chops. How does this game stack up to the other horror giants? You'll have to tune in to see. Do it up!

Episode 86: Inuyasha: The Secret of the Cursed Mask22 Sep 202301:53:54
This week, a tripe to Feudal-era Japan! Rick is joined by Bill Barber (The Gaming and Collecting Podcast; The 3DO Experience) to talk about the early 2000s JRPG Inuyasha: The Secret of the Cursed Mask! Licensed games can be a mixed bag, and this one is no exception; while the battle system is perfectly serviceable and the visuals are quite nice, the game itself feels like an elaborately done fanfiction. Mechanics, voice cast, memories of waking up at 2am to watch the show, and more - do it up!

Episode 84: Parasite Eve, part 111 Sep 202301:31:37
"Even if you don't understand... don't worry, your mitochondria will. They've always known..."

This week, Rick is joined by Nomad of the Retro Wildlands Podcast to face biological horror within the cult classic Parasite Eve. A genuinely unique marriage of JRPG and survival horror, Parasite Eve is a special game in the catalogue of Square. In today's episode, Rick and Nomad dive into the development history, talk all things mechanics, explore the soundtrack, themes, and more. I've heard it said that the play button is the powerhouse of the podcast...so press it, why dontcha!

Episode 83: Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth31 Aug 202301:50:30
Out of all of the Digimon games, this is most definitely one of them.

This week, Rick is joined by Aaron (Super Pod Saga) and Chris (A Novel Console) to dive into the digital world as they cover Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth! This was the first Digimon game the US got after the series had been more or less dormant since 2007. While it has plenty to like about it, there is much holding it back. In this episode, we go over the facts and figures of how the game was made and who was involved, the writing and narrative, and the crunchy, stat-based goodness that is the farming system. All of this and more - no digivice required!

Xenosaga Episode I Analysis, Part IV (Ep. 112)18 Jun 202402:21:46
Don't be so surprised; this is the power of will, a fundamental power that exists within everyone. What you are witnessing is simply your perception of it. And you know what? Perception and pain are but one and the same. So... go ahead... Feel my pain for yourself!

The final installment of our miniseries on Xenosaga Episode I is here! We reach an exciting conclusion, but are ultimately left with more questions than answers: Who were Albedo and Junior in their pasts?; What is Abel's Ark?; and why is Shion being drawn to Old Miltia? We unfortunately do not see these answers play out until episodes II and III. In this episode, we discuss the final areas of the game, see Albedo's true ruthlessness, and more. Do it up!

Episode 78: Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver20 Jul 202301:44:31
I choo-choo-choose y- wait, that's a different long-running animated franchise...

This week, Jay Davis of Super Bracket Bros joins Rick to talk all about Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver, remakes of the original generation 2 Pokemon games. What more can be said about Pokemon? It's one of the longest running media franchises out there, and is absolutely ubiquitous in our culture. Gen 2 games were particularly well-beloved, and the same can be said of these remakes. We talk plenty about the originals, what worked and what didn't in the remakes, and the franchise as a whole. We hope you enjoy!

Episode 76: The Music of Nobuo Uematsu30 Jun 202301:47:20
Earthbound Papas is such a good name.

It's difficult to discuss the music of video games without encountering a few titans of the industry, and among the tallest stands Nobuo Uematsu, a veteran composer perhaps most well-known for the Final Fantasy series. Uematsu's influence and styles run so much deeper than what many of us might expect, though. In this episode, Rick is joined by Jameson of the barSILENCE Video Game Music Podcast to discuss the legend himself, as well as dive into three unique OSTs of his with which you may be unfamiliar. And of course, there's plenty of Final Fantasy talk. We hope you enjoy!
