92. making practicing piano easier19 May 202500:14:23

Make practicing piano easier for our students by:

1. prepare them to practice in the lesson by teaching and reviewing landmark notes, demonstrating rhythm, and testing them to figure it out on their own.

2. external motivators as you see fit, and encouraging the parents to make sure practicing happens at home.

3. teach them the difference between playing, practicing and performing.

91. Pro Tips Summer Studio Contests with Larissa Humphries25 Apr 202500:34:58

Larissa Humphries (a cello teacher friend) puts on these Summer Contests with her mom Stephanie Hinckley (my piano teacher friend). Such a great idea!

First you look at what technical challenges your students may be having, gaps in their learning, things they need to work on.

Second, choose a theme and think of 7 musical projects they could do on their own. Some easier than others.

Larissa wants to also mention that she tells the students they are working toward the grand prize, she doesn't share that they only have to complete 5 out of 7. That gives her the flexibility to see if 4 out of 7 is enough work for some grand prizes to be awarded.

Remember to choose themes and projects that work for YOU in YOUR studio, these are ideas that worked for Larissa in hers.

Also check out last week's episode 90 for a repost of more summer ideas including groups, camps, and creative ideas.

Maybe this will be the best, most musical summer ever!

81. accelerate or adjust? the pace for progress25 Oct 202400:25:04

When should we accelerate our piano students forward, and when is it better to adjust and take a different approach?

To challenge or not to challenge?

In this episode, we explore the delicate balance between pushing students forward or decelerating that motion a bit. It's an art, not a science—

🔑 Key takeaways:

  • Learn the personalities of the students for which kids love a challenge, and which get overwhelmed easily
  • Involve the parent every step of the way
  • Why labeling pieces "easy" or "hard" can miss the bigger picture
  • Navigating student challenges, from small wins to overcoming difficulties
  • Practical tips for pushing students just enough while keeping their growth steady and fun

This episode offers strategies to keep progress steady without overwhelming them. Tune in to find out how to strike balance in your teaching!

77. [encore] 3 ways to teach rhythm...you choose the way!22 Aug 202400:14:30

As we wrap up the last of the summer encore episodes, I HAD to include this one because rhythm is the essential life blood of all music, and is often not taught effectively.

I explore 3 ways of counting rhythm -all of which I use with different students and in different situations

1. traditional "one-and-two-and..."

2. "TA and titi"

3. fruit names!

Don't worry it's all explained, and I'd love to hear how you help YOUR students with rhythm! Find me on Instagram @angelatoone_

76. [encore] correcting notes....positively!15 Aug 202400:17:18

This episode got a re-record and an upgrade to explain how I help piano students fix notes in a positive way, and in a way that positively fixes that note more permanently in these common scenarios:

1. They realize It’s not right and fix it themselves immediately

2. They can hear something is wrong, but they can’t tell which note exactly

3. They know where the right note is, they just accidentally played a different one

4. They don’t realize the note is wrong. Either their ear says it sounds fine, or they mis-memorized…or both. They think it’s right, but it’s not.

That last one is the hardest to fix I think, but I’ll tell you exactly what I do in the lesson, and by extension how to practice at home more effectively.

How would you handle these situations?

75. [encore] landmarks and intervals...this is the way!08 Aug 202400:16:23

I think this episode deserves a place in the top ten, so I am showcasing it as an encore episode. I describe the best way I have found to teach note-reading to piano students, and best of all, it works with whichever piano teaching method you use, propelling students forward in these 3 ways:

1. Remembering which clef is which,

2. Learning all their notes quicker allowing them to learn more and more music (and have more fun of course!)

3. Helping them become better sightreaders overall, useful wherever music takes them in their life!

74. [encore] the musical alphabet11 Jul 202400:16:11

I get questions from piano teachers:

"Thanks for your first lesson video, I love it...what do I do next?"

This episode answers that question!

How to recognize the white note letter names without having to start at A all the time (takes forever!)

Plus I play games with little erasers to remind students which white notes are which!

I learned many of these ideas from my piano teacher in High School, she mentored me to get started teaching.

71. Pro Tips with Patricia Kelsey Graham23 May 202400:43:13

This sweet, warm, kind, musical, dedicated, creative Grandma-lady was my piano teacher through all my elementary years. She's been teaching since 1962, and has 16 studeents to this day!

You'll hear how she started paying her aunt Mabel 50 cents for each piano lesson, to all these years later and the students she calls "music friends" that have made her life full and sweet.

Talk about a mom job, she has done all of this while raising 6 of her own children.

She shares a few more than 3 prime tips for beginning piano teachers

Here are some things she taught me:

-sandwich the constructive between the compliment

-have a solo recital when students finish a book

-group classes were called "piano parties"

-be creative and always try something new

-the two piano book with Classical pieces we referenced is Favorite Classics accompaniment by Lancaster and Renfrow

69. "growing" money09 May 202400:10:42

Another one of my hobbies is gardening, but for aliving I’m growing piano students.

Think for a minute of what you are growing as a piano teacher. Not only students getting taller than their teacher, but they are growing in knowledge week in and week out, month after month, recital after recital. Growing in their abilities to play more and more complex and beautiful pieces, having varied experiences, and making new friends.

AND your income can grow and grow to move the needle of your financial goals, increase memories with your own family, and go into your own personal growth.

So teaching piano is not just a job, it’s money for growth. Growing students, improving piano teachers, and increasing your income at the same time.

64. performance without anxiety28 Mar 202400:20:17

Heart beating,

palms sweating,

breathing faster,

hard to concentrate….you know what that means….stage fright or performance anxiety.

Something we all deal with to some extent, and our goal is not to stop feeling nervous, but work with it, and bring in the good feelings with helpful thoughts!

Inthis episode, I share what has worked for me as a pianist, what I learned from my college professors, and my own experience as an independent studio teacher. And of course what has worked for my piano students!

We discuss the thoughts that cause those physical sensations, and what to replace them with

Much more in-depth discussion, including the similarity between feeling nervous and excited, what students think others think about them, what experts have taught me, and more personal experiences, at a live zoom masterclass on this topic.

63. by heart, teaching memorization14 Mar 202400:20:26

Have you or your students experienced these worst-case scenarios?

  1. Go up to perform…can’t remember the starting notes.
  2. Or the performance is going pretty well, then get stuck and can’t finish!
  3. Or a huge break in the middle or skipped parts!

Mortifying! Traumatic even!

I know from experience!

I share some masterful ideas to help students play by heart.

I‘d recommend pausing this episode and clicking on episode 41 “teach how they learn, 3 sensory modes” for an overview of visual, kinesthetic, and auditory learners. In this episode 63 I talk specifically about how to teach piano memorization differently to the 3 different learning styles. One thing that helps us all….Starting places! Have you heard of them?

 .

Let me show you these and more memorization hacks in a live Zoom Masterclass next week: Memorization Mastery.

62. Pro Tips with Rachel Ehring07 Mar 202400:26:45

Dr. Rachel Ehring is a true creative! She shares all the many hats she wears, and the solutions she has found and developed for each. We talk:

  • teaching resources, private and group
  • accompanying (she has a new how-to course coming out! link)
  • podcasting

All the things! Here are her top 3 tips for beginning teachers

1. Don't try to do everything. It's easy to get "shiny object" syndrome and want to try everything you hear about, but you have to choose what is going to be the most useful thing right now and focus on that

2. That being said...don't be afraid to try new activities, games, tools. You will start to build an arsenal of activities that you can use "on the fly" if you have a squirrely student or one who is having a hard time grasping a concept.

3. Stories are a great way to connect with students. You can use storybooks about music. I've also created short "sound effect stories" that I use with my beginning students to teach simple musical concepts.

Speaking of stories, characters and stories can be fantastic to help students memorize, details to come about techniques to teach Memorizing Mastery and Performance without Anxiety!

57. imagine that!27 Jan 202400:19:49

Our culture sees imagination it as kind of childish, I'm here to offer that imagination can not only enhance our students' musical expression, but can improve our lives as we picture the studio and life of our dreams!

I pictured in my mind a job at home with my kids, teaching children something I am passionate about, with the flexibility I can manage around my life! Teaching piano became the reality.

Imagine having a set of questions to help students find their notes on their own!

Imagine having a set of sayings to match the rhythms you can pull out for that particular student who just isn't getting it!

Imagine your students having a knowledge of scales and how they connect to chords they can carry with them to wherever music takes them!

Imagine a small community of piano teachers we can bounce ideas off each other, learn the best usable tools, and get your questions answered!

Only a few days left until the Piano Teacher Toolbox 6 week group closes: January 31st at midnight! Only 8 spots available come join!

on the brain.

50. 3 things I am thankful for25 Nov 202300:16:44

In honor of Thanksgiving, and my podcast turning 1 year old, I am feeling so grateful for 3 things in particular that piano teaching has given me:

1. A chance educate cute kids, be a kid myself, and watch these kids grow into teens and adults creating lifelong relationships

2. Piano teaching brings so many positive emotions! Amazement when they surprise you with huge growth, wows when they make incredible strides, and satisfaction of knowing I helped them gain this valuable skill!

3. Finally, I am thankful for the extra income piano teaching has brought to our family. The debt we've paid off, the things we've saved for, and the security it brings.

Finally, thank YOU for being here and sharing this podcast with me! Please share this podcast with someone who could use a boost in income, likes kids, and might love the fulfillment of teaching them music!

49. 3 tips on choosing music for students16 Nov 202300:12:30

One of the most challenging things about teaching piano lessons!

I get a lot of questions about choosing music for students, so I have 3 tips for you!

1. Have the student try it out, sightread

2. Play 3 choices for them either you play the piece for them on the piano, or look up good recordings on YouTube.

3. Consider students' strengths and weaknesses. I explain times when we play up their strengths and times we strengthen their weaknesses!

I'd love to hear your suggestions too!

45. Pro Tips with Laura Francis: Teaching Adults05 Oct 202300:33:58

My friend Laura and I could not stop talking!

She has been teaching piano for 30 years, and teaches cello as well.

Like me, she has mentored students with teaching also.

Laura has developed an innovative way of teaching adults that is flexible, automated, and supports them in their musical goals!

She had me laughing hard more than once!

Her top 3 tips for beginning teachers

1. Don't be afraid to teach differently than how you were taught

2. Have mentors. Connect! Ask questions and keep learning

3. Connect with students as a person and what excites them.

Be patient and encouraging. Enjoy the journey!
