| Lofoten, Norway, the challenges & successes of my first adventure in the Lofoten Islands! | Episode 177 | 04 Jun 2025 | 01:15:59 | |
In this one, I dive into what went well nailing Aurora shots even with low-KP activity and what could’ve gone better waiting for that perfect light to hit. You’ll get my first impression favorite spots, stories on dealing with Lofoten’s fast-moving clouds and the reality of Lofoten Islands' limited pathways & parking.
This podcast is all about scouting this jaw-dropping Arctic spot, chasing the Aurora Borealis and seeing some unreal landscapes celebrating the wondrous look of Norwegian Fjords. Think near-misses over Hamnoy Bridge’s iconic red buildings balanced with pure wins like stumbling on the green grass water pools off Havveringen Road. This episode is packed with the highs and lows of photographing in a place that DEFINITELY needs to remain on your Bucket List!
| My Top Ten Favorite Milky Way Images Part 1 | Episode 178 | 16 Jun 2025 | 01:23:36 | |
I’m counting down my top five favorite Milky Way shots of all time - up to now at least. Each one’s a story of what went well and what could have gone better chasing the stars at these brilliant locations. Sometimes an image is in my Top Ten because of my work nailing the perfect frame and learning from the times I totally botched it. But sometimes these images are in the Top Ten just thanks to where they are and how easy it is to get something amazing there!
From the wild southern skies of New Zealand to the rugged canyons of Utah, these locations have shaped how I see the night sky through my lens. You’ll get the highs and lows of each shoot, plus some solid tips to help you snag your own killer Milky Way pic.
Oh, and if these spots get you stoked, my upcoming eBook "Photog Adventures' Milky Way Field Guide has ALL of my favorite locations and helpful tips on how to get there. Tune in for the full scoop or click here when ready to grab your copy: https://bit.ly/45YC4FL

| Sand Survival at the 2026 Sand Cave Adventure | Episode 180 | 06 Jun 2026 | 00:52:48 | |
Utah's 2026 drought turned a road I have driven many times into a completely different beast. In the first half I tell the story of what happened out there and why after a dry winter you probably should double-check conditions before deciding to drive dusty roads you maybe have driven JUST LAST YEAR which may have changed entirely. This road was mostly a medium challenge six times in a row...not this time! Here are the DOs and DONTs of sandy driving that kept me from getting stuck in the middle of nowhere.
After the break I walk you through my favorite steps for capturing a portfolio worthy image at the Sand Cave. From picking your position around the dune, to getting your sky before the important stars leave the window of the cave and then finally the foreground captures that bring the whole image together in post. You will also get the honest truth about my opinion on stacking sky images again but this time I will explain the two situations where it actually makes a difference versus the one where you are just wasting your time.
| Escalante Devil's Garden | Milky Way Compositions, Moon Lessons & My Favorite Spots | Episode 179 | 26 May 2026 | 00:57:51 | |
PSA: Anyone planning a trip to Devil's Garden in Escalante. Hole in the Rock Road is now getting paved! It already has ten miles and goes nearly through to Devil's Garden. It's so amazing to experience the drive out there being so incredibly smooth. It's a million times better experience than it has ever been. If you have been putting off this trip, your excuse just got a lot weaker!
In today's episode I talk about last week's night out at Devil's Garden and how I could have better planned for the moon and why going impromptu on moon photography is a lesson you only need to learn once. You will also be reminded about mastering your camera's quirks! These issues only reveal themselves when you are standing under the stars at 2am. Get out often to help you find yours BEFORE your next big trip rather than during it.
In the second half I share my absolute favorite compositions at Devil's Garden from my favorite Adventure Pinnacles to Metate Arch and its very specific window of opportunity you need to nail the best composition at the Arch. With a smooth ride all the way to the Devil's Garden parking turnoff, you don't have any excuses to get out there and have an Escalante Adventure asap!
| Phil Sisto | Artist in Residence at Capitol Reef National Park in Utah | Ep 164 | 29 Jul 2021 | 01:12:57 | |
Phil Sisto joins me to talk Milky Way Photography in the less-mentioned Capitol Reef National Park here in Utah where he was the 2020 Artist In Residence! Phil shares how he got the gig and the secrets to a good application. While also dishing on the great situation he had there with the amazing house they gave him to use while working there!
From amazingly deep mud cracks around Cathedral Valley to making a 45-minute hike THREE HOURS LONGER, Phil shares his successes and misadventures while being the Artist in Residence.
Phil uses Star Trackers in his Milky Way Photography and shares his best tip for post-processing the masked blend of your foreground and sky in photoshop.
If you are seeing the podcast cover art I used from Phil, you are NOT getting the full glory of that image and will need to go Phil's Website to see this amazing image from the beautiful Milky Way at the top and the incredible hyper-foreground of the deeeeep cracks in the mud! It is an amazing shot! Check out Phil's Work right away!

| Inspired & Tired our 13-mile hike to look for our lost Inspire 1 Drone at the Wedge Overlook | Ep 69 | 14 Feb 2018 | 00:56:19 | |
Going out on a Saturday to the mini-Grand Canyon of Utah - the Wedge Overlook - for some fun location scouting and filming with the drone should be an easy going uneventful day. Well our trip with Daniel Lindhardt a couple Saturdays ago reminded us why some of you think of Photog Adventures as a Laurel and Hardy act or enjoy it because we are a couple of boneheaded photographers having a blast and you just enjoy our comedy of errors!
This Photog MISAdventure starts out with some fun driving through Buckhorn Wash enjoying the Petroglyphs and Pictographs of the Archaic and Fremont Indians in the Barrier Canyon Style panel. But soon it turns into the panicked realization that we just flew our drone out beyond our reach, well at least not without a long hike!
Come listen to how that 13-mile hike went and how the search turns out!

| Five days of Sunrises & Sunsets over Arches, Canyonlands, Deadhorse Point & False Kiva | Ep 68 | 08 Feb 2018 | 01:33:26 | |
To start on 2018 really well, we joined Jeff Pedersen, Tim McGowen, Drew Armstrong & Kirk Keyes out in Moab to enjoy never sleeping and lots of Photography! We just missed Ed Shanahan out here, it was really too bad we missed him on this trip but he got an AMAZING sunrise at Mesa Arch that Monday. Jeff and Tim bragged about it allll week long as we never had that amazing of a sunrise at any location but some really great sunsets where the sky just blew up with pink afterglow!
We capture the Windows area in Arches National Park both for Landscape Photography and Milky Way Photography as well as Star Trails at Balanced Rock one night. Then Mesa Arch, Deadhorse Point and the Gossips for sunrises.
Other than being crazy sick with Bronchitis, it was an amazing trip!

| Announcing the Faroe Islands Workshop with James Kelly coming Sept. 10th - 17th, 2018 | BONUS | 19 Jan 2018 | 00:45:39 | |
We talk with James Kelly about our upcoming Faroe Islands Workshop that is going to be a tremendous experience that we couldn't have imagined and really hope twelve of you will want to join us this September!
James talks about his connection to the Faroe Islands, his years of experience there, the weather, culture, awesome potential for Landscape Photography and the blast we are going to have from Sept. 10th through 17th out there!
Learn more about the workshop here: https://goo.gl/oe5BB3
The Faroe Islands are an archipelago of eighteen islands half way between Scotland and Iceland in the North Atlantic Ocean.
We have created this workshop for you to experience photographing some of the most breathtaking scenery on offer with steep sided mountains that rise out of the sea to almost 1000 meters making them the tallest cliffs in Europe, small fishing villages with grass covered roofs, huge cascading waterfalls that flow strong after the smallest rainfall, deep like fjords and black sand beaches with tidal pools scattered all around.
Each location we visit will offer a new adventure and we will even make the drive into the heart of the mountains of Vestmanna, Spáafelli on Suðuroy and to the summit of Sornfelli that stands almost 2500 feet above.
The Islands are a true source of inspiration to anyone who visits. With the constant changing weather making every photograph unique.
| We recap some "bests" of 2017 & declare goals for 2018 with Jordan Younce | Ep 66 | 11 Jan 2018 | 01:19:22 | |
Enjoy this Christmas Morning episode talking about our Goals for 2018 and recapping some of the "bests" we had in 2017. We begin the podcast talking about Jordan Younce's new adventure and the end of a chapter in his life. Then we go over his awesome recommendation on Picture Books, the best challenges, moments and images from 2017 and what we plan on doing in our Photography business goals for 2018!
Sorry for the delay on this podcast causing all the Christmas Morning talk to be three Mondays too late, but a couple weeks of illness and crazy difficult time-sucking edits on the Oregon podcasts made it impossible to get this one out. Argh
| What we learned in 2017 in our Landscape Photography and Milky Way Photography | Ep 65 | 08 Jan 2018 | 01:00:18 | |
In this second to last episode of 2017 we go over some of the major things we learned through more practice in our Landscape Photography and Astrophotography. Some of these can be obvious and are things we all know, but until you are out there enough and recognize when you are NOT doing them DESPITE KNOWING them or when you realize you are doing them just a little wrong it can make a big difference to your photography.
After a year of going out to over 65 DIFFERENT LOCATIONS for photography in 2017 Brendon and I have learned a LOT about where our strengths and weaknesses lie. Thanks for being a part of this adventure in 2017 and we can't wait to report that we are practicing what we are preaching in this podcast!
| Finishing our Oregon Coast trip talking Thor's Well, Cape Kiwanda & Cannon Beach | Ep 64 | 07 Jan 2018 | 02:29:39 | |
In this CRAZY EXTRA LONG EPISODE we cover our adventures from Sunrise out at famous Thor’s Well, awesome but frustrating sunset at Yaquina Head Lighthouse, great sunrise at Yaquina Bay Bridge, an AMAZING and highlight of the trip Sunset out at Cape Kiwanda and then an equally amazing sunrise out at Cannon Beach to finish out our trip along the Oregon Coast in November. We are joined by listeners John Henry Maurice and Kyle Kephart throughout this podcast and at times it happens suddenly. Despite my best efforts editing them in, some transitions will be sudden. Apologize for that and the length of this podcast but there is just too much good stuff to get stingy in episode 64!
1 hour and 26 mins into this podcast listen as Brendon finally reveals that he has possibly FOUND his lost memory card that carried thousands of images from his entire first half of the Oregon Coast trip!
Again thank you to all of you who joined Brendon and I on this Listener Adventure to the Oregon Coast! We really had a blast out there with listeners Drew Armstrong, Kirk Keyes, John Henry Maurice, Kyle Kephart and new friends Michael Shainblum and Serena Ho. Not going to be an adventure soon forgotten and definitely worth the extra long feature on the podcast. So many amazing places out in Oregon! If you haven’t been there yet, start planning to join us next year for the November Listener Adventure 2018!

| Oregon 2017 Part Two: Bandon, Shore Acres & Heceta Head Lighthouse at Night | Ep 63 | 30 Dec 2017 | 01:34:00 | |
Second Part of our Oregon Coast 2017 Listener Adventure and this time we are in Bandon, Shore Acres State Park and at the Heceta Head Lighthouse! This trip had been fantastic but a day of rain moved us from the Brookings area up to Bandon with hope that the skies would clear by sunrise the next day and boy did the skies change! We talk about our working hard to take advantage of the gap in the cloudy skies at Bandon and later on Shore Acres on our way up to Heceta Head Lighthouse. We ended up barely catching a short-lived mostly clouded out sunset from the road at an overlook across the bay from Heceta Head Lighthouse and then hike up to the lighthouse to capture it at night while the lights are shining. It was a stunning adventure from Bandon to Heceta Head and was made even that much better with another day of hanging out with Michael Shainblum and Serena Ho!
Again thank you to John, Kirk and Drew for joining us on the podcast to share their what went wells and challenges!

| Late Season Milky Way Photography over Sand Dunes | Ep 58 | 11 Dec 2017 | 00:55:35 | |
We go out with Daniel Lindhardt for some late season Milky Way Photography over the Sand Dunes of the Little Sahara here in Utah. Looking forward to enjoying the peace and quiet of cold October temperatures out at the Sand Dunes but instead we find that there are hordes of people out there! We talk about the challenges of lighting the dunes with only one light, staying safe amidst all those Can-Am and ATVs flying all over the place and difficulty with composition over light polluted spots and the 1-hour visible only Milky Way Core.
THIS IS NOT A RECOMMENDATION JUST INFO: http://amzn.to/2kn0ocg
We have optimism this light will work great but until we give it some real tests we can't recommend it.
| Sunrise & Star Trails at Bryce Canyon with the Pocatello Photo Club | Ep 57 | 05 Dec 2017 | 01:16:10 | |
Invited by Larry Petersen from the Pocatello Photo Club to join them at Bryce Canyon National Park for a day, we got the opportunity to capture a beautiful short sunrise at Inspiration Point, a sunset from the top of a mile hiking trail in Losee Canyon and hang out roadside capturing Star Trails over Red Canyon's famous drive through arch on a night of a Full Moon.
We discuss the challenges of meeting up with a group we have never met in person in the pre-sunrise pitch black morning, getting a room for a few hours of shut eye mid-day, how we don't remember hikes being as hard as they end up being, seeing the awesome cliffside tree at Losee Trail, more afterglow amazement and then end the day the best way possible with some Astrophotography doing Star Trails in Red Canyon.
This week's Listener Photog Adventure features Kevin Bell's shot at Bassi Falls near Lake Tahoe in California. See his image and more of his story at the Show Notes at PhotogAdventures.com/ep57!

| Fall Colors Sunset Photography in Dry Canyon with amazing afterglow | Ep 56 | 28 Nov 2017 | 01:19:54 | |
We share the successes and failures of our photog adventure up Dry Canyon. Hiking almost two hours to get to this amazing view from a rocky outcropping on the side of this Rocky Mountain foothill is such an amazing setting for some fall colors and Landscape Photography. The Sunset was potentially going to be blocked by a thick layer of clouds but optimism and perseverance won the day as the clouds opened up and bathed the magical, colorful landscape in amazing light.

The wife asked if we could go away camping to the Grand Canyon last weekend. A bit different Thanksgiving, but who was I to say no? So...I was able to book a site at Mather Campground on Tuesday after spending a couple days constantly refreshing the website to see if one would become available. Lucky!!! Drove the family 7ish hours from Orange County Thursday morning and arrived to the campsite at 3PM.
I have a lot of images over the 2 days we spent there, but here is one from Friday morning at 5AM trying to get the opposite side of the Milkyway core.

| Waterfalls, Pratfalls & Fall Colors in North Carolina with Jordan Younce | Ep 52 | 09 Nov 2017 | 01:33:28 | |
In one of our longest podcasts yet, we recap our fantastic week long trip out to North Carolina where we hang out with Jordan Younce of PictureMonk Fame and SleekLens.com notoriety. We muse on the discomforts of airplane travel, preparing for a photog adventure correctly, Brendon's famous waterfall break dance, challenges of sunrises and sunsets in a land with a lot of tall trees, being too early for fall colors, sunrise with fog at a nearby lake, the beaches of North Carolina and the crazy apes we met at the Linn Cove Viaduct.
In short, we saw ALL of North Carolina with Jordan and Roger Younce from the Blue Ridge Parkway all the way to the beaches south of Wilmington and had a blast out there!

Their hard work on keeping the Facebook group from sucking and being really fun guys to work with deserved some recognition so Brendon and I spend an hour hearing about their beginnings in photography, their scariest adventure this past year, where they love to go close to home for photography and the one thing they have learned this year that they want to pass along.
If you don't mind a bunch of dudes ribbing each other, laughing loudly and hanging out giggling like a bunch of 14-year-old girls you will enjoy this podcast.
Special thanks to our other two Facebook Admins who unfortunately couldn't make it this episode: Brent Huntley and Josh Moore.

| The Opposites We Pray For | Ep 162 | 20 Nov 2020 | 00:48:59 | |
If you want a great sunset and I want a great Milky Way and beg nature for clear skies, I am going to ruin your landscape photography.
Skies. We constantly complain about them. We want the opposite sky than we are getting more often than not. Depending on our type of photography, we might benefit or lose.
In this episode, I talk about the different conditions, goals, mindsets and challenges faced by Landscape Photographers vs. Milky Way Photographers. We all want light but there is this curious love we have of LIMITED light. We want the light we have to exist but also be uniquely limited in some way so that it looks even more awesome to us.
Join me as I detail the differences in both disciplines of photography, share another story from the Upper Peninsula workshop and encourage all of us to get out there and enjoy the conditions coming up that actually gives BOTH types of photography really great skies!

| Jordan Younce | Two ways to go Full-Time in Photography | Ep 42 | 04 Aug 2017 | 00:57:52 | |
Today's episode is not a normal episode. It is about inspiration. Many of us as we discover our love of photography dream about that day when your entire job is playing with a camera all day! But how can we do that? We are Landscape Photographers. We are Milky Way Photographers. So how are we going to win the photography lottery and make money doing those?
You probably won't. You are probably like me and Brendon and will need to find a revenue stream that will support your lifestyle of going out doing your favorite type of photography and allow you freedom to travel with your camera at any time during the day.
PictureMonk Jordan Younce joins us to reveal the two things he is doing to earn his paycheck: Sleeklens.com content creation and Real-Estate Photography.

| Thomas Heaton | Talking YouTube & Landscape Photography | Ep 39 | 28 Jun 2017 | 00:48:57 | |
Taking a break from our travels on the road to Bandon, Oregon, we have the awesome opportunity to have a call with Thomas Heaton and talk about his success in YouTube, pick his brain for what he does right whether intentional or not and got to hear about some of his awesome Landscape Photography adventures.
Learn why Thomas doesn't do Astrophotography, how he isn't interested in the analytics and strategies of YouTube but just likes to focus on sharing the story of getting out there with your camera. He brings us along to Zion National Park, talks a future trip to Antartica and explains how his perspective has changed as he has done Landscape Photography.
| Impromptu LIVE Sunrise Adventure at Bloods Lake | Ep 38 | 21 Jun 2017 | 00:45:56 | |
When a scheduled podcast is requested by the guest to be pushed back a couple weeks, we decide to go on a last-minute impromptu adventure and bring our podcast equipment along with us! We travel up Big Cottonwood Canyon to Guardsman Pass and then hike to a potentially perfect spot for the sunrise. We talk about the challenge of making the most of a cloudless sky, using PhotoPills to know where to set up the camera and push ourselves into a sleepless night just to make sure the podcast doesn't go out any later.
| Live Listener Q&A with PhotoPills' Rafael "The Bard" Pons | Ep 37 | 12 Jun 2017 | 00:58:25 | |
Rafael "The Bard" Pons joins us on the podcast & LIVE on YouTube to answer listener questions about the PhotoPills app. A MUCH DIFFERENT podcast than the usual as we take listener questions live and in my edit I skip over the questions. Most likely better as a video, see the live uncut presentation here: https://youtu.be/n0VUDOB9F8c
With listener questions and our own, we learn many previously unknown shortcuts where a single tap or double tap can lead you more quickly to the next astronomical milestone. Rafael also explains to us how to use the Search tool from the bottom bar of the planner, what the column of blue bars are next to the circled Milky Way image on the Planner, how to best plan for Golden Hour light, how to be certain you won't be in the shadow of terrain and many other tips.

| Milky Way Photography out in Escalante National Monument | Ep 36 | 11 Jun 2017 | 01:05:50 | |
We spend Memorial Day Weekend out at the Grand Staircase - Escalante area and experience crazy dust, beautiful clear night skies, terribly annoying washboard dirt roads, actually visible but partial Aurora and get lost walking in a straight path. All with our buddy and guide Jeff Pedersen.
Astrophotography is usually a challenge, but out at Escalante there are photogenic setting on top of photogenic setting making the only difficulty waiting until the next nightfall so you can start capturing images again. What a beautiful place for Milky Way Photography.
Sorry for the delay, the audio quality and the shortened Gear Time. We intended gear time to talk up the contest that would have been ending two days after the podcast was released but audio quality delays and flooding at Aaron's house delayed the podcast edit. Sorry all!

| Mark Gee | Astrophotography Planning with Australian Photographer | Ep 34 | 23 May 2017 | 00:46:34 | |
We hangout with world renowned Australian Photographer Mark Gee and talk about the incredible patience and planning it took for him to capture his famous video of the full moon rising on top of silhouettes of people enjoying the view at a lookout in Wellington, New Zealand. If you haven't watched the video yet, go to the link below and watch it right now! Everything was so well planned out and perfected over months of trial and error. It is awe-inspiring!
We also go over the scary and the hilarious of getting out with your camera at night and absorb all the wisdom and info Mark is willing to impart for how he deals with noisy foregrounds, captures timelapses and when is best to travel to New Zealand for the best view of the core of the Milky Way.

| I'd Rather be a Crack Addict than an Aurora Chaser | Ep 161 | 17 Nov 2020 | 00:46:21 | |
With three napkins filled with the scrawls of locations and weather predictions strewn around her, MaryBeth announced the next likely location for the workshop. Copper Harbor! A discussion and a decision later. We were heading West! MaryBeth had woken up early that morning to find us an opening in the skies so we had a better chance of seeing the Aurora should the conditions arise.
The evidence of her hours of meticulously checking multiple weather models & predictions filled the napkins with data written in a legibility only MaryBeth was capable of reading. As she gathered her nearly falling apart napkins she laughed to herself and commented aloud, "See what I mean about rather being a crack addict than an aurora chaser?" Implying that it might be even less crazy to be on crack than participate in the chase she loves best.
In this podcast, I share some of the what went wells and could have been betters about last week's Upper Peninsula Aurora Workshop.
From weather and aurora chasing, to the sights and waterfalls of the Upper Peninsula and my first chance using a Tiffen Fog Filter to capture Orion in the darkest sky most of us had ever been under, this past week lived up to the Photog Adventures motto of getting out there on an adventure!
