St Peter’s packed to hear celebrity  Stone Mason05 Mar 202600:07:06

Stonemason and best selling author, Andrew Ziminski spoke at St Peter’s on Wednesday 4 March.

Over 200 people listened to his tales and experiences of repairing churches (he also specialises in ancient bridges).

The audience was wholly rapt up when he spotlighted pieces of technique, purpose and designs. The wonders of self repairing lime cement a good example.

He had views about special features of St Peter's itself and Rev Hughes gave a speedy tour of the church with his usual flaiir and enthusiasm

The event was organised by Rural Strides and with One Tree Books doing a roaring trade in Andrew’s book Church Going; Andrew's next book is about castles.

International Women’s Day is a moment to celebrate the achievements, resilience, and contributions of women everywhere04 Mar 202600:04:43

The Winter Warmer Café in Sheet offers a perfect local setting for that spirit of community. Each year, this day encourages reflection on progress toward equality while reminding us of the work still ahead. The night skies above Petersfield in March 202603 Mar 202600:05:56

Welcome to our 3rd anniversary ‘Sky Watch’ episode!

We’re incredibly fortunate to be within one of the best stargazing areas in this part of the planet! The south of England boasts a number of areas that are ideal for stargazing.

The 'Petersphere' is more or less in the midst of this astronomically blessed region. Our town is inside a Dark Sky Reserve inside a National Park. Not only that, but our part of the world includes two planetariums, one in Winchester, one in Chichester, and an observatory halfway between.

What better place for stargazing - and of course 'Sky Watch' brings you the latest highlights every month.

Written by Petersphere resident, astronomical expert and amateur astronomer Geoff Burt, and voiced by Claire Vennis, every month Shine Radio presents a Sky Watch of our unique dark skies.

Councillors on the spot at well attended Town Meeting03 Mar 202600:11:40

Around 150 people attended the Town Meeting on 2 March to hear from the Council's five committees - Finance, Sport Recreation and Environment, Public Halls, Festival Hall Development and the Planning Committee (as the Town council comments on all applications the Planning Authorities consult on.)

Projects reported on were the £400k Council chamber upgrade, £255k on the Heath toilets, £283k for new lights rigging on the Festival Hall stage, £140k on the Penns playground and £55k on The Avenue tennis courts.

Lots of information was provided and Rochelle Halliday the Town Clerk, said it will all appear in the Council's Annual Report which will be available shortly.

We also hear from Robin Davison, the newly appointed Deputy Town Clerk.

The Mayor's charities this year - Winton House and the Scouts - made presentations about their work.

The South Downs National Park also spoke about the excellent working relationship with the Town Council. The park has 18.8m visitors overall and they gave details of the £800k town focused spending (from the section 106 levy on new buildings) which had been spent on, for example, the play area, signage, CCTV and the pond. Part of another fund - the Community Infrastructure Levy  - has also allocated £250,000 allocated to the Council.

Audience members had a few 'back and forths' with councillors about some things - the full costs of the Festival Hall work, trees being removed and not replaced, planning discussions but not involving local people.

The Mayor made awards for 'service to Petersfield' to Jenny Tickner from Winton House, Jenny Cummings from Home Start Butser, Jen King from the Free Shop, Jordan Beech from the Friends of the Heath, John Wade-Palmer from the Physic garden and Steve Field for Agencies Working Together.

Julie Butler and Mike Waddington report.

As part of the effort to encourage attendance the Town Criers were used to publicise the event and Martin Johnson played a song about it on Rams Walk,

Hampshire County Council ask for views about dementia care 12 Mar 202600:05:32

Audrey Morton from Dementia Friendly Petersfield says this is an important opinion survey and people should not hold back from recording their view about what it is like for them if they have dementia or are caring for someone with the disease.

She’s filling it in herself; it’s anonymous so say what you need to.

Many groups, including Dementia Friendly Petersfield, are putting it on Facebook and at meetings so all views can be collected - in writing as well as online.

Audrey says, "the front tine" - people with dementia or carers - needs to be heard but also needs to be spoken.

Hampshire County Council say:

We want to know what matters to you – people living with dementia, families, carers and anyone with experience to share.

The survey should take around 10 minutes to complete and closes at 11.59pm on Sunday 12 April 2026.

You can use the online survey

Ratting with the West Sussex Warreners01 Mar 202600:25:23

Spirits are high as 18 dogs and their owners brave the rain to clear rats from an area of cover crop on a shooting estate in Hampshire.

It’s a “bobbery” pack of different breeds, from a sizeable lurcher to a mini sausage dog, along with terriers and hounds. Host Kate Fairweather marvels at how the different breeds instinctively apply their skills to the jobs that suit them best - marking the rat holes, digging or standing by to chase any rats that slip past the terriers.

After months spent gorging on grain left for the pheasants, the rats have multiplied in the area around the grain bins and ‘cover crop’. Poison is the only alternative to dogs, with the attendant risks to wildlife, so the gamekeeper welcomes the rat pack as the most effective and humane option.

It’s noisy, it’s muddy, it’s exciting and it’s certainly quick - a hard bite to the neck, combined with a shake kills the rats instantly, and the dogs move on to the next, cheered on by their owners.

Kate Fairweather was guest of the West Sussex Warreners. Feel free to get in contact with the West Sussex Warreners if you have a farm or a shoot with a rat problem in Hampshire, Sussex or Surrey. They are fully insured and all their dogs are broken to livestock.

A new film - Reined In - sees Town Criers in new roles27 Feb 202600:07:37

Reined In is a new comedy film by Godalming’s Richard Stride, currently on the Festival Circuit.

Richard has hopes it might also be made into a six part comedy series (the Caulfield Chronicles).

Petersfield’s Town Criers, Faye and Martin Thompson, were invited to play roles in the wedding scenes set at a stables. They told us about the experience.

Richard tells us more about the film, its roots in vintage British comedy, his own roles in Star Wars, and also about happenstance; how moving one way or the other leads on to big developments - or not.

Faye and Martin enjoyed the crowd scenes and you can see a fleeting glimpse in the trailer on YouTube (below)

Healthwatch contacted the service providers and found they wanted opinion so Healthwatch have now produced a self help guide on how to collect feedback and opinions.

Siobhan McCurrach, Healthwatch's Hampshire Area Director, spoke to Mike Waddington (also a member of Healthwatch) about why this is important.

Your opinions - positive and negative - about trees and green spaces sought23 Feb 202600:07:13

At the beginning of April all households will receive a survey through their letter box, from the Petersfield Society, about trees and green spaces in the town.

Andy Moffat from the Petersfield Society tells Mike Waddington about the Petersfield Green Space and People's Survey (funded through a grant from Waitrose) and why opinions are being asked for.

There will be development in the town too, so how should we plan for trees and green spaces and also check that developers deliver what the planning permission asked for.

Andy says they are looking for views both positive and negative as all help the thinking to keep the town a beautiful place to live.

Watch out for the survey in your April Directory delivery.

Starting a business is tough but is recommended by Stroud entrepreneur19 Feb 202600:07:18

Heather Coulson runs her own business, the Home Projects Companion, from Stroud.

She recently joined the Stroud Village Hall Board as a Trustee.

She launched her business to help people with domestic projects - from making your own cleaning products to larger work on your home; running courses as well as larger project work.

She recommends going into business but works harder now, if flexibly, than when she had a 'regular job' and says it’s not for the faint hearted but likes it.

Speaking to Mike Waddington she talks about her motivations and challenges.
