Dog Entitlement with Behave Atlanta04 Nov 202500:59:22

Dogs are family — and these days, they’re welcome almost everywhere: cafés, breweries, stores, and even offices. But as our world becomes increasingly dog-friendly, some are wondering… have we taken it too far? In this episode, Chris chats with Lillian Ciardelli, ACAAB, and Amy Campbell, CPDT-KA, of Behave Atlanta, two canine behavior experts who help people and dogs navigate real-world settings with empathy, skill, and good manners.

Together, they unpack what happens when “dog-friendly” tips into “dog-frenzied,” how to balance freedom with respect, and why understanding natural dog behavior is the key to creating harmony in shared spaces. Whether you’re a dog lover, trainer, or business owner, this conversation will make you think about life with dogs in the modern world.

In This Episode We Explore:

  • Why we’re seeing more dogs in public than ever before
  • The difference between inclusion and entitlement
  • Are we putting our own desires ahead of what’s best for our dogs?
  • Natural dog behaviors vs. “bad” behaviors
  • How to manage overstimulation and anxiety in public spaces
  • Training tips for café- and brewery-ready pups
  • Dog etiquette starts with human etiquette
  • How to handle unwanted attention or off-leash encounters politely
  • The growing concern over fake “service animal” claims
  • The “social contract” of responsible dog ownership
  • How trainers, vets, and business owners can model better behavior
  • One simple mindset shift that benefits every dog and every person

Key Takeaway
Being truly “dog-friendly” isn’t about allowing dogs everywhere — it’s about creating spaces where dogs and people can coexist safely, respectfully, and happily.

Easing Pain, Restoring Motion: The Galen Myotherapy Approach with Lisa Buchanan, CPDT-KA, MHS21 Oct 202500:51:51

Galen Myotherapy is a holistic, mindful approach that goes far beyond massage—helping dogs feel safe, understood, and pain-free while deepening the bond they share with their people. In this episode of PetAbility Podcast, Cathy and Chris explore this powerful form of canine bodywork with Lisa Buchanan, a certified Galen Myotherapist. Lisa explains how her gentle, evidence-informed, choice-led treatment protocols help dogs release tension, move more freely, and even improve behavior. Most importantly, listeners will discover why addressing a dog’s emotional and physical wellbeing together is the key to lasting comfort and mobility.

Highlights include:

  • What makes this therapy different from other canine bodywork approaches such as massage, chiropractic care, or physical therapy.
  • Core principles of the Galen approach, including assessing posture, movement, and emotional cues.
  • The types of dogs that benefit most — from puppies to seniors to dogs recovering from injury or surgery.
  • How quickly guardians may see changes in their dog’s mobility, relaxation, and overall demeanor.
  • Insights to what a typical session involves - environmental changes, passive touching techniques, and movement/exercise.
  • How practitioners identify tension or discomfort before starting treatment.
  • Heartwarming success stories — dogs whose quality of life improved dramatically through this work.
  • How pet owners and professionals can learn more or even pursue Galen Myotherapy training themselves.

  • Symptoms: From panting and pacing to aggression, hiding, and over-grooming

Getting "Schooled" on Fish Rescue with Gwendolyn Church28 Dec 202100:57:57

If you’re listening to PetAbility, then you’ve likely had a fantasy at some point in your life about having a rescue, likely for dogs, cats, or even farm animals. But I bet you never dreamed of having a fish rescue!! Dive in as fish rescuer extraordinaire, Gwendolyn Church of Friends of Philip Fish Sanctuary, tells us what it takes to properly care for fish while dispelling myths and bringing tons of compelling information about fish ownership to the surface. Her goal is that our fish not simply survive, but actually thrive in their homes! “Fishes are sensitive, intelligent animals who deserve so much more than we give them,” says Gwendolyn. Fish are different from ALL other animals because they have gills, fins, and live only in the water. However, these differences don’t mean that they are any “less than” our furry friends. So let’s make an o’fish-ial commitment to spread the word about our fish friends and the care they warrant!

Buddy’s downward dog stretch you see in the early morning is integral to his overall wellness. Stretching maintains or increases the flexibility of soft tissues (muscles, tendons, ligaments, joint capsules, etc.) and helps to prevent injury by prepping the body for activity. Proper flexibility makes any movement easier. Pets tend to lose flexibility as they age or as a result of an injury – both situations limit their ability to stretch on their own. As owners, we need to stretch our pets to help them move easier or heal faster. Listen to Cathy and Chris give tips on how to:

  • Get your pet's cooperation for a stretching session;
  • Warm up the tissue before stretching;
  • Stretch the major muscle groups; and
  • Monitor different signals while stretching your pet.

Listen to this episode and stretch your mind so you can stretch your pet. Everyone will feel better!

Agility = Teamwork + Fun for ALL with Nolan Ring 30 Nov 202101:00:37

What do you get when you take people and dogs of all shapes and sizes and ask them to race through an obstacle course? AGILITY! Of course, there's lots more to it than that, but agility is fundamentally about enhancing the relationship with your dog. Essentially, you learn to talk to one another!  You learn how to read their signals, motivate them, and communicate your desired outcome through verbal and non-verbal cues. Agility is a very versatile sport that can accommodate any team that wants to try it, but mostly it's tons of fun. You may choose never to compete (and most don't), but you can still reap the benefits of relationship building, physical exercise, mental acuity, confidence boosting, and enrichment - and that's just for you, not to mention your dog!! So go find an agility class near you and embrace the obstacles on the course!

Neuroplasticity: How Experiences Rewire the Brain for Healing with Dr. Amie Lamoreaux Hesbach16 Nov 202100:58:24

So your dog has an injury? Lesson one: the nervous system is adaptable. Lesson two: don't be afraid to touch your pet! It does more than you might ever imagine. Whether it’s a neurologic or orthopedic injury, providing sensory input can help the body to heal faster and more fully. Sensory input is smell (a huge part of the dog's brain in devoted to this so give them something savory to smell), hearing (play a relaxing soundtrack), vision (bring them outside to watch the squirrels), taste (give them their favorite yummy treat) and touch - warmth/cool, massage, brushing, vibration, pressure, etc. Why is all this important? Because it changes your pet's brain to promote healing. By providing comfortable, novel, positive sensory experiences, we can impact our pet's ability to recover from trauma. Listen to Amie Hesbach, PT, DPT, MS, NCPT, CCRP, CCRT, CKTP, describe how new pathways between the brain and the body are created to teach old dogs new tricks given the right sensory input and environment!

Veterinary Chiropractic with Dr. Linda Rogers 19 Oct 202100:54:33

Chiropractic for pets? Yup, it’s a thing. A really good thing! If you notice that your pet is not moving quite right or is holding themselves oddly, chiro may be the answer. And its not what you may think in terms of snap, crackle, pop. It’s a very gentle manual technique that our furry family members are surprisingly amenable to. Why? Because it makes them feels better! Listen to Linda Rogers, DVM, describe what it looks like to perform this holistic technique, share the broad spectrum of conditions that chiropractic can positively impact, and what its benefits are. The science and art of chiropractic impacts the nervous system to alleviate pain, promote proper movement, and ultimately restore homeostasis. Like we said, veterinary chiropractic is a really good thing!

The Nose Knows! Canine Nosework with Michele Ellertson CNWI05 Oct 202100:56:04

Dogs navigate their environment through their amazing sense of smell. So why not utilize this natural gift through practicing nose and scent work with your canine companion?  It doesn't have to be formal or fancy, although there are classes and competitions aplenty. This relatively new sport (~2007) uses the canine olfactory system to solve problems and instill confidence. Moreover, EVERY dog can - and should - do this because it's what they are born to do! And when it comes to enrichment and gentle movement, this is an activity that senior dogs, physically disabled dogs, and blind or deaf dogs can master! Listen to Michele share what nosework is, how its trained, and its myriad of benefits.

Punishment and its Fallout with Ran Courant-Morgan, M.S., Behavior Analysis21 Sep 202101:05:16

Of course, none of us wants to think that we are actually punishing our pets! But in truth, punishment is simply anything that results in a decrease of a behavior either by adding something (positive punishment, perhaps a verbal reprimand) or removing something (negative punishment, maybe taking away a coveted toy). So we are all likely to be inadvertently punishing our pets without realizing it. This can result in unintended consequences. Listen as Ran, an expert in behavior analysis, helps Cathy and Chris to decipher what punishment actually is, what its outcomes are, what to look for in a dog that's experienced it, and ultimately, how we can mitigate its fallout.

The ABCs of CBD with Dr. Joshua Sosnow24 Aug 202100:46:09

There is a lot of "buzz" going around about the use of CBD to help our pets. Listen to Josh Sosnow, DVM, share his vast knowledge about CBD. We address what is known and unknown, but its potential use is immense and evolving. The use of CBD to help your pet’s osteoarthritis, anxiety, cancer, allergies, or seizure disorder is certainly worth exploring with your vet; however, the primary challenge today is accurate dosing. Another challenge is ensuring the product is high quality, free of heavy metals, pesticides, and other harmful contaminants. Dr. Sosnow helps us navigate what to look for when purchasing CBD given limited product regulation. The good news is that CBD is a natural alternative to prescribed drugs, plays well with other medications, has little to no side effects, and is generally very safe. Although not a panacea, the potential is HUGE! Stay tuned as real science continues to be published about these plant-based chemicals.

Hip Dysplasia with Dr. Michelle Powers29 Jun 202101:06:11

You wince as you hear your vet tell you that your 2 year-old German Shepherd has hip dysplasia. You did nothing to cause it. The special x-ray he just got told you he was born with excessive laxity in his hip joints. You thought he was a little lazy because he didn't always want to follow you up the stairs or jump into the car. Sometimes, the morning after a big hike, he didn't even want to get up to go outside and then laid down to eat his breakfast. At times, he would snap his head around when you gave him butt scratches, but you thought that was because it tickled. And no matter how much your daughter tried to get him to stand on his hind legs for a treat, he just wouldn't do it. It isn't that he is lazy; it's because his hips hurt!

Even though his loosey-goosey hips could not be prevented, there is still plenty you can do to manage the onset and severity of hip joint arthritis that follows. And it’s pretty simple stuff like weight management and strengthening! After listening to Michelle Powers, DVM, DACVS, CCRT, DACVSMR educate you about hip dysplasia, your worst fears will be allayed and you'll feel empowered. Hip dysplasia is not a death sentence, just an unfortunate and very common orthopedic condition that needs lifelong management. You got this!

Environmental Enrichment for Cats with Tenara Kuznezov, CVT 17 May 202101:05:36

This episode focuses on what environmental enrichment for our feline friends might look like, along with its many benefits, as we continue our discussion with cat expert, Tenara Kuznezov, CVT.

A cat's inner dialogue might go something like this: Food in my bowl is boring - throw my kibble cuz I want to hunt it! And by the way, fresh water please - but not in that disgusting metal bowl those dogs use! The red dot is here! The red dot is here!! I love when it suddenly appears and I can chase it from room to room - vroom up the wall it goes!! Whew, I'm a bit tired now from all that exercise. Will you give me  a soft stroke from head to tail? Purr thanks. I think I'll nap on the top of my cat tree. I really like being up high because I feel safe and can survey my domain from above. Now that I've rested, I think I'll saunter to my perch in the window to see if there are any birds out there at the feeder. Yay butterflies!!! Time to sharpen my nails on my nifty rope post. Can I  please have a new fuzzy mouse or crinkly ball to chase around since I've been such a good girl today? No? Wait, you are bringing me grass and leaves from outside instead?!?! You are the best pet parent ever! You know I need to do so much more than sleep all day!! I love you.

Hind Limb Passive Range of Motion: There's Nothing Passive About It!20 Apr 202100:46:14

Essential, imperative, necessary, vital. These are just a few words to describe the importance of joint range of motion in your pet’s quality of life. Imagine if you had a stiff knee, how difficult it would be to squat down to get that pan out of the kitchen drawer. It hurts so bad as you struggle to rise again, that the next time, you choose simply to bend at the waist. Oh no!  After doing that a few times, now your back is killing you. Your dog goes through the same thing when climbing the stairs, squatting to eliminate, or simply sitting. How can we help? By doing passive range of motion (PROM), which is having someone, like the pet owner, move their joints through their normal motion for them. PROM aids function by protecting the joint cartilage, increasing blood flow, decreasing swelling, and ensuring all tissues are at their ideal length. Arthritis from injury or aging is one of the top diagnosis for which pet owners seek veterinary care, and the first step in treatment should be PROM.  As we perform PROM, we can assess not only the quantity of the motion, but also the quality of the motion. Is there crepitus (crackling in the joint), warmth, swelling. Getting our hands on our pets provides all this information and more. Listen to Cathy and Chris to learn the mechanics of how to perform PROM on your pet’s pelvis, hip, knee, ankle, and toes. Your pet will thank you!

CCL Tears with Dr. Mary Ann Nieves06 Apr 202101:04:10

Your dog is an athlete. You ask him to perform feats of athleticism on a daily basis whether you realize it or not: jumping into the back of your SUV from a stance, sprinting across the field for a ball, hiking up that steep trail, or running beside you for your morning jog.  And then there’s the “squirrel’s revenge!” Yes, your dog always sees that squirrel taunting them as you open the door and takes off like a shot, leaping over the stairs, only to come to a dead stop at the base of the tree. Can you imagine if you did this upon waking in the morning? You might think you’d injure your knee and that is exactly what happens to your best friend. He suddenly comes up lame in the hind leg. It doesn’t get better so you take him to the vet and sure enough, he’s torn his cranial cruciate ligament or CCL (ACL for us humans).  Then you find out, it doesn’t heal on its own so your vet recommends surgery! Believe it or not, this scenario plays out all the time because tearing the cranial cruciate ligament is THE most common orthopedic diagnosis seen by veterinary surgeons.

Listen as we talk with Mary Ann Nieves, DVM, MS, DACVS, about everything cranial cruciate ligament:

  • Anatomy of the dog’s knee and why does slope matter?
  • The function of the CCL and why it’s so important?
  • The complicated and multifactorial reasons that lead to CCL tears.
  • Does this injury happens in all species, even our cat friends?
  • Can we do anything to prevent these injuries?
  • Surgery vs. conservative management: pros and cons.
  • What is a TPLO, TTA, and lateral suture?
  • Arthritis and chronic pain after a CCL tear, especially if no surgery is performed.
  • What is the role of prehab and rehab for CCL injuries?

Find Dr. Nieves at Blue Pearl Pet Hospital.

Vestibular Dysfunction with Dr. Gena Silver09 Mar 202100:50:04

Vestibular what? You might not have ever heard of vestibular dysfunction, but according to veterinary neurologist, Gena Silver, MS, DVM, DACVIM, it is one of the top three neurological issues in dogs.  Imagine suddenly feeling dizzy, nauseous, stumbling, and even falling over. That is what an animal with vestibular dysfunction might abruptly experience. You might see your pet's head tilted to one side, their eyes darting, and they can't walk without support. This can feel devastating and even scary. But according to Dr. Silver, don't judge a book by its cover! Depending on the source of the problem, signs can disappear over time as with "old dog vestibular." A  correct diagnosis, through an MRI, determines prognosis and treatment plan.  However, a "wait, watch, and see" approach with supportive care at home may work as well. Listen as Dr. Silver explains why all pet owners should be familiar with signs related to 8th cranial nerve issues.  Although vestibular dysfunction is common, signs may vary from the very subtle and difficult to recognize to the more overt where the dog is alligator rolling and vomiting. Let’s all learn the signs together because timely and accurate diagnosis determines prognosis.

Everything puppies! with Kristy Williams, CVT, CCFT23 Feb 202101:09:48

Raising your puppy should be FUN! From the little learning sponges in the neonate stage to the fantastic, mature, sound adults they become, and everything in between, it’s here! Join us as we discuss the world of puppies with trainer, Kristy Williams, CVT, CCFT! She’ll open your mind to puppy things that you never even considered. Did you know it’s actually appropriate to stress the puppy within two weeks after birth – just a little bit - so they can handle stress better later in life? Or that early play with littermates contributes to bite inhibition as they age so your dog knows when to let go? What are the fabulous consequences of  teaching our pups that nothing in life is for free, that they must earn it?!? Have you thought that you may be accidentally reinforcing undesired behaviors and then failing to provide positive options? You need to establish clear rules immediately as everything becomes much harder when your dog is 60+ pounds. The early days, weeks, and months are so important. Everything matters!

These are just of few of the pearls of wisdom heard in this episode. We also discuss:

·       What a good breeder does before we get our puppy.

·       The three physical stages of development and how this is determined based on growth plate closure and sexual maturity.

·       Picking a puppy that’s right for you.

·       The effects of the coronavirus pandemic on our puppies.

·       Fear periods – what are they and when are they?

Canine Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome with Dr. Bronwyn Riggs09 Feb 202100:50:12

Why is my 13 y.o. dog seeming so confused by every day tasks? She doesn't seem to recognize me anymore and went to the window to be let outside. Then she seemed to get lost on our usual walk and became quite anxious. She is pacing all night long and then sleeps throughout the day. She's never had an accident, and now urinated on the dining room rug twice last week! Sound familiar? According to Bronwyn Riggs, VMD, DACVIM (Neurology), perhaps it's cognitive dysfunction that is responsible for changes in her behavior, disorientation, and confusion. The brain experiences age-related degenerative changes just like muscles. Impairment of memory and learning with age exists across all species. Factors such as genetics, diet, environment, lifestyle, and metabolic diseases contribute to susceptibility. Although there is no cure, cognitive decline can be managed with enrichment, behavior modification, targeted nutrition, medications, and certain supplements. To exercise their brain, you can teach your old dog new tricks!

Whether it's 10 degrees below or 110 degrees, there are plenty of easy, fun exercises that you can do with your pet in the comfort of your home. Cathy and Chris share some of their favorites: squats, walking backwards, high tugging, reaching, digging, front feet up, spinning, high 5s, tunnels, obstacle coursing, and happy trails!! They explain why each exercise is beneficial – maybe it strengthens your pet’s hind end or stabilizes their core or stretches their hips or makes them more aware of their feet or promotes balance. These activities are appropriate for dogs of all sizes, shapes, and ages. Even the cat lovers out there can do many of these! Grooming to Maximize Health and Function with Meghan Terwilliger29 Dec 202000:56:31

“Humanity over vanity!” Grooming is much more important than just making sure your pet looks pretty or smells good. Grooming is vital to maximizing your pet’s overall health and well-being. No grooming or improper grooming can lead to pain, decreased mobility, skin and ear infections, issues with thermo-regulation, poor oral hygiene, and the list goes on. Most don’t realize that the groomer is in integral part of your pet’s care team. By bringing your pet to regular grooming appointments every 4-6 weeks, the groomer becomes a first line of defense – examining skin, coat, teeth, ears, and nails, finding things that may need attention long before your pet’s next scheduled veterinary appointment. As a certified fear-free groomer, Meghan does all this while making your pet’s experience as pleasant as possible, establishing trust, and changing their emotional response to grooming. She describes what a fear-free appointment might look like and how she works to make it a positive experience for your pet by inviting them to participate in the process. Meghan listens to what the dog is telling her, allowing her to work around any anxiety-producing issues. When your pet looks forward to grooming, it will more likely look forward to other experiences such as veterinary appointments. Finally, we get into the nitty gritty of salon safety, sanitary clips, senior comfort grooms, and the recommended frequency of bathing, brushing, and nail trims. By the way, Meghan bets your dog’s nail are too long!

Integrative Medicine for Pets Living with Cancer with Dr. Erica Barron 15 Dec 202000:56:29

It’s all about living with cancer, not dying from cancer. Dr. Erica Barron, owner of her mobile vet practice, wants the pets in her care to not just live longer, but live well. Listen as Dr. Erica describes how integrative veterinary medicine (in her case, acupuncture and herbs) aids pets with cancer to have improved energy, decreased pain, increased appetites, and overall better quality of life. Traditional cancer treatments, such as surgery or chemotherapy, can be augmented with Eastern medical philosophies. She looks at every pet as a whole, not as a diagnosis, that results in treating the totality of each animal – not simply their cancer. Dr. Erica emphasizes treating patients is not a one size fits all, but very individualized based on the needs, abilities, and desires of the  pet and their owners. As a veterinarian that goes into the pet’s home, she has a unique perspective that allows her to examine the pet’s environment and advise accordingly. The frequency of treatments, often once per week, enables her to have timely, important conversations so that pets in her care can live their best lives.

Doggone Pain!17 Nov 202000:48:50

None of us wants to think that our pets are experiencing pain. But in reality, many pets have both short-lived painful episodes throughout their lives or even chronic pain due to injury or disease as they age. So how do we know they are in pain? After all, they can’t talk to us. Throughout this episode, we discuss what signs to look for so you will be better equipped to realize what your pet is telling you. In addition, we converse about:

·         The definition of pain that is both physical AND emotional

·         What body language to look for that may be indicative of pain

·         Unrecognized or overlooked sources of pain

·         Acute vs. chronic pain

·         How pain is different than suffering

·         Signs of pain in cats

·         Sick bird syndrome

·         Unique characteristics of northern dog breeds

·         Importance of controlling our own emotional reactions to our pet’s pain

·         Keeping a pain journal

·         Simple things to do if you suspect your pet has pain

·         Signs of inflammation

So pain is a necessary evil that we and our pets both deal with. Empower yourself to help your pet!

“Covering” Beds – considerations for your pet’s best sleep!03 Nov 202000:42:21

This show covers everything you’ve ever thought about, or NOT thought about, when it comes to your pet's bed. If you’re like us, you get a bit overwhelmed when it’s time to select the right bed for your best friend. There is more to it than size and color. We will help you come up with a checklist of considerations to aid in picking out that perfect bed:

·                        What position does your dog sleep in?

·                        Can they get in/out of the bed with ease?

·                        What materials is the bed made of - both inside and out?

·                        Is it washable?

·                        Does this bed warm or cool your pet?

·                        Is it durable?

·                        Is it suitable for outdoors?

·                        Does it have a liner?

·                        Is the cover removable?

Ain’t Misbehavin’ with Behave Atlanta20 Oct 202000:58:41

PetAbility teams up with Behave Atlanta to explore how  trainers and behaviorists  intersect with physical rehabilitation so that pets may live their best lives. Have you really ever thought about how your pet’s emotional health might affect their physical health? Or why it may be important, even vital, to have a well-trained, emotionally balanced pet? Skills such as leash manners, a strong recall, and drop it/leave it can be the difference between life and death. And a well-behaved pet means they can  join you on exciting adventures out in the community, further enhancing the bond between you. We also discuss  how stress impacts your pet’s health and how to recognize the signs of stress,  including cortisol spikes. Heck, what is cortisol and why should you care? How do you keep your dog below their threshold by creating a Zen zone or taking a cortisol vacation? And did you know that your stress level can actually be mirrored by your pet? Yikes! Finally, think how different a visit to the vet might be if it was a wonderfully positive experience because they enjoy everything from the car ride there to being handled for their physical exam.  We think after listening to this episode, you will not only see your pet differently and focus on their emotional well-being in addition to physical well-being. Just like humans,  body and soul cannot be compartmentalized – each impacts the other.

Believing in Grieving with Laurie Levine, LMHC06 Oct 202000:58:14

If you’ve ever had the profound pleasure of loving a pet, you’ve undoubtedly experienced grief when they pass. But the loss of a pet is distinctive because our relationship with our pets is unique: non-verbal, ever-present, physical in nature, and full of unconditional love. We often have longterm and intense relationships with our pets that we have with no other human on earth. So to feel grief when our pet dies is real, wrenching, and normal. Laurie Levine helps us to understand how this loss can feel invisible in a society that has difficulty with death and dying, thus grieving the loss of a pet can feel very lonely. Laurie explains that grief is the other side of love. Pet grief is different; it is not a linear process, but a journey. In this episode we discuss the emotions of relief, guilt, and even embarrassment when our pet dies. Laurie discusses the importance of memorializing our pets and gives advice on rituals to help us through the grieving process. Sudden death vs. prolonged decline - how does this impact grief? Is there such a thing as anticipatory grief? What is a good death? How is euthanasia not only a responsibility, but also a gift? Finally, how can we support others who are grieving the loss of their pet?

Laurie offers phone, virtual, or personal sessions, as well as drop-in support groups in Arlington, MA, at SleepyDogVeterinary.

Prosthetics and Orthotics with OrthoPets founder, Martin Kaufmann22 Sep 202001:05:38

"It's always about the one." Those are the words from founder, Martin Kaufman, of OrthoPets. After helping more than 25,000 pets world-wide since its inception in 2003, Martin is still driven by serving that next pet in need. This podcast is packed with information: starting with describing what an orthotic (brace) and prosthetic (replacement limb segment) are, to learning if your pet might be a candidate, to the team-supported ordering process, and finally helping your pet adjust. Our pets naturally have the willingness and determination to succeed despite physical challenges they may face. We will discuss OrthoPets' most-requested and far superior custom knee brace for treatment of cruciate ligament tears as well as  custom braces for elbows, wrists/paws, ankles/paws, and shoulders. Listen to how Naki'o, a dog who lost all of his limbs to frostbite, thrived after receiving four prosthetic limbs (first ever!) and simultaneously transformed Martin's thought processes. We'll even talk about the orthotic for a goat named Jerry! Yes, a goat! The bottom line is that orthotics for an injury and prosthetics for a partially missing limb are all about improving function, decreasing pain, and  making mobility easier.  And we have the opportunity and responsibility to provide an improved quality of life for them via an orthotic or prosthetic. Let's do this together!

CAT-apaulting into Cat Rehab with Lillian Ciardelli, MA, ACAAB08 Sep 202001:01:01

Despite cats clearly being superior to all other beings (at least that's what the cats tell us), sometimes they need a little help from us lowly humans due to injury, disease, or genetic conditions. But how on earth do you get a cat to cooperate with a physical rehabilitation program? Anybody who knows anything about cats, knows that a cat isn't going to do anything he or she doesn't want to, right? WRONG! Listen as professional animal behaviorist Lillian Ciardelli tells the story of Sal, a rescue cat who had a front-limb amputation and hip surgery at the same time due to a trauma! Yes, Sal had a bit of a rough start in life, but Lillian applied her behavior training to the vet's prescribed rehabilitation plan, using Sal's natural  cat instincts and her own creativity for a successful outcome! She examined everything from his play style to what motivates him while being careful to avoid  stress. Turns out cats are highly trainable and benefit from physical rehabilitation after all.

Eddie's Wheels, "pet tested, pet approved!" with Leslie Grinnell25 Aug 202000:53:36

Listen to Leslie Grinnell, owner of Eddie’s Wheels describe how she and her husband Eddie, a mechanical engineer, created their first wheelchair for their beloved dog, Buddha, over 30 years ago. This labor of love turned into a business in 1999 that has manufactured over 25,000 custom mobility carts for pets! The patented unique welded saddle distinguishes Eddie’s Wheels from other carts, and they now have over 2,500 saddle designs. It is akin to riding a bike vs. hanging in a rock climbing harness, allowing your pet to experience consistency and start from a point of stability. Serving special dogs all around the world from 2 to 240 pounds, Eddie’s Wheels restores independence for every animal customer. But wait, it doesn’t end there! The company has created a cart with a variable axel that adjusts as your pet ages or their disease progresses. They make carts for dogs with amputations or simply needing a little assist after cruciate surgery. They can accommodate any skeleton (learn about Harry!).  Not only do these carts work for dogs, cats, and rabbits, but also aardvarks!! What? Listen to learn how a cart might give you or someone you know, their dog back. A cart isn’t the end, but rather a new beginning as mobility and independence is restored.

The Extraordinary Lives of 2-Legged Dogs with differently-abled dog enthusiast, Domenick Scudera11 Aug 202000:43:58

What do you get when you have three noses, three BIG hearts, and six legs? You get a pack of extraordinary two-legged dogs! Meet Cyrus, Lucky, and Deuce! Cyrus, a little Terrier cross from CA, is the cutest little dog with the most soulful eyes who was born with only hind limbs. Lucky is from Egypt and was left for dead on the street after likely being hit by a car, and has only front limbs. Then there's Deuce, who runs with a pack of able-bodied dogs at the dog park on only his right front and right hind limbs. Although Cyrus and Lucky have wheelchairs to assist their mobility, their owner, Domenick Scudera, says Deuce pulls him on leash with his sturdy, solid, and stable frame. All are certified therapy dogs and all are Domenick's family pets. He and his dogs are on a mission to inspire and give hope to people who are experiencing similar challenges. These dogs dispel misconceptions and provide joy to all who meet them. According to Domenick, they are like "regular dogs" at home, with all the same routines because "dogs only know what they have, not what they don't." There are many life lessons to learn from these dogs, if we take the time to listen and learn.

ToeGrips - "Traction that Travels" with Dr. Julie Buzby 28 Jul 202000:50:04

The concept is simple - hard nails cannot grip hard floors - so lets add some rubber where the dog naturally grips (the grip zone at the end of their nail) to prevent them from slipping. That's what Dr. Buzby's ToeGrips do! Dr. Julie Buzby, integrative veterinarian, doesn't sell just these little toenail rings, she sells hope! Listen as she passionately discusses the instant transformation ToeGrips can provide with fear-free movement. Your dog can go from an anxious posture to one of confidence as they navigate their environment wearing ToeGrips. No longer trapped on the "carpet island" because their traction travels with them, our dogs are once again interacting with the family, playing, engaging the other pets in the household, and leading a more joyful life. Unlike a sock or shoe that can add weight, be cumbersome, and diminish their feedback from the ground, most dogs don't even know they are wearing ToeGrips! ToeGrips utilize a dog's natural biomechanics and are great for an array of orthopedic and neurological problems. Listen to see what all the Buzby, er rather, buzz is about!

Click Dr. Buzby's ToeGrips for more information about Toe Grips, Dr. Buzby, and the importance of traction.

Right to the Point with Acupuncturist, Carol Hetherington, LicAc, MAOM, DiplOM30 Jun 202000:48:59

Imagine getting a needle stuck in your head and having a feeling of complete and utter relaxation, even euphoria. That's exactly what happens with acupuncture. It's all about stimulating the right point and it is very safe. Thereafter, a cascade of processes are triggered in the body that signals the body to heal itself. Acupuncture "makes suggestions" to the natural healing powers that lie within. Effective at addressing pain, acupuncture also works synergistically with medications to increase their efficacy and minimize side effects. Acupuncture aligns with the integrative model of veterinary care combining Eastern and Western medicine, and is especially powerful in combination with physical rehabilitation. Treating both acute (post-injury or surgery) and chronic issues (osteoarthritis), acupuncture also helps the immune system, allergies, cancer, organ function, sleep, anxiety, PTSD and the list goes on. And a little trivia: acupuncture needles are so small that up to 30 of them can fit inside a needle used for shots! After listening, you'll get the "point" of acupuncture's powerful potential!!

Warm Ups and Cool Downs - it's not just for the "jocks" you know!19 May 202000:58:37

Do you like sandwiches? We do! And not just the food kind. We like to sandwich our pet's exercise with a warm up at the beginning and a little cool down at the end. The principles of warming up and cooling down applies to ALL pets and not just the athletes. Listen and learn what it means to actively warm up your pet. Will it prevent injuries? YES! Will it take long? NO! Will my pet enjoy it? YES! Even more importantly, will I enjoy it? YES! Do I have to be an expert trainer (either physical or behavioral) to learn how to do it? NO! Much of warming up is simply mimicking what you are about to do with the intention of breaking it down into steps and doing it more slowly. Not rocket science but so, so important. And cooling down is even easier - just reverse and repeat what you did during the warm up!

And if you happen to have a star athlete in your midst, then digesting this "sandwich" is imperative to a healthy diet!!
