Re-ranking USCfootball.com's Top 30 Most Important Trojans for 202431 Aug 202400:50:16
Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino are back together for a special behind-the-scenes edition of the Helium Boys Podcast. The Helium Boys work through the process of compiling and debating a post-fall camp re-rank of USCfootball.com's Top 30 Most Important Trojans' list. For the last five seasons, the USCfootball.com staff has counted down the Top 30 Most Important Trojans in a series of offseason articles leading up to the kickoff of fall camp. Each year under Lincoln Riley, the USC roster has seen significant turnover each year making it a bit of a guessing game trying to figure our who is going to play and how valuable they are going to be toward the team's success, so we've incorporated a re-rank when the Trojans' football team makes the transition from fall camp to game preparation in the week leading up to the season opener. Each USCfootball.com staff member submits his own list of whom he/she believes will be the most important Trojans. Considerations for the rankings take in a wide range of factors including positional depth, 2023 stats, overall talent, departures from the previous season, projected development and expectations. The only guidance we try to follow is that the most important factor for placement is if this particular player was lost for the season, how detrimental would it be to the team and the overall success of the season. The individual lists are submitted and compiled before Shotgun and Chris come together to sift through the information, debate and assemble the official USCfootball.com rankings. In this podcast, the Helium Boys give you a peek behind the curtain, allowing you to listen in on the re-rankings discussion as we sift, sort and come up with the final preseason rankings. The re-rank includes several risers on the defensive side of the ball, including Gavin Meyer and Anthony Lucas, as well as players whose importance declined whether through an inability to lock up a starting role or the emergence of other players. USC Triple-Double Podcast: Previewing rivalry matchup; assistant Kurt Karis talks about his rise from walk-on to Trojans coach25 Jan 202401:30:49
The USC Triple-Double Podcast returns with co-hosts Shotgun Spratling and Connor Morrissette (aka Mr. Triple Double) previewing USC men's basketball's upcoming rivalry game against UCLA this weekend and breaking down a tough road trip for the USC women's basketball, which lost back-to-back games for the first time this season. The Women of Troy slid out of the top 10 to No. 11 in the Associated Press top 25 poll after losing to No. 20 Utah and No. 3 Colorado on the road. The disappointing campaign for the men's team continued with the Trojans losing their fourth game in a row, falling at Arizona State after turning the ball over 22 times in the game, including 15 times in the first half -- the most by any Power Five team in any half this season. Shotgun and Connor break down all the latest action for both teams, including looking closely at JuJu Watkins and her fouling out with 5:50 remaining at Colorado, focusing the spotlight on Bronny James and looking at exactly where the Trojans stand statistically and in the standings. The podcasting duo also look at the positives and negatives of the recent USC basketball action from both squads and look forward to the next week to preview what lies ahead. For the men, they prepare for the Galen Center iteration of the Crosstown Showdown against UCLA while the Women of Troy host Washington and Washington State. USC men's assistant coach Kurt Karis also joins the show to discuss the Crosstown Showdown rivalry and his favorite moments going against the baby blues during his nine years with the Trojans. Karis also talks about his career path and trajectory from Chicago-area native playing at Chicago State to USC walk-on to Trojans' staff member. Family Feud Podcast: Bye Week Bests08 Oct 201801:13:42
A bye week? In the middle of the season? What's up with that? A year after playing 12 straight games without a bye, the USC Trojans got a reprieve in October. USC played a tough September schedule and came out with a 3-2 mark after an unsatisfying 24-20 road win over Arizona. But it got a chance to regroup, recoup and recover. Now where will the Trojans go from here? Shotgun Spratling and Keely Eure are back in the studio to discuss that and more in the latest episode of the Family Feud Podcast. This week, they break down USC's trip to the desert and how the Trojans held on for a victory but disappointed the fan base even more along the way. Before getting into their normal segments, Shotgun and Keely debate the merits of trying to invest the extra time afforded by a bye week in trying to get healthy versus trying to get better. USC chose rest and recovery over full pads and tougher practices with as many as 26 players missing a single practice during the abbreviated bye week practice schedule. In this week's Stock Up/Stock Down segment, the duo of debate discuss the Trojans' rushing attack in different ways, look at a pair of young linebackers that got extra playing time against Arizona and talk about the effects of getting a week off from the regular grind on the positive side. Snapping, Pac-12 officiating and a pair of second-year defensive backs end up on Stock Down, but Shotgun and Keely have to argue over where special teams should be placed.  In the 'Heard it on the Sidelines' segment, USCfootball.com duo have plenty of observations and overheard chatter from the Arizona game, including one player's off-hand post-game remarks that really stood out. The dynamic of the offensive line and the coaching being presented to the group is also examined. Following a week free of a USC game, the 'Agree/Disagree' section is replaced with a special 'Bye Week Bests' segment that looks back at the first five games of the season with the best position groups, players and impactful plays highlighted. Shotgun's top position group is unexpected while Keely argues about whether there should even be a 'Best Win' category. The Family Feud Podcast is looking to feature your question on an upcoming episode. Family Feud Podcast: Changing the momentum28 Sep 201800:50:19
USC bounced back from two straight losses to get a 39-36 win over Washington State. It wasn't pretty and was far from perfect, but the Trojans kept their perfect record at home under head coach Clay Helton. They did it by changing the narrative. After back-to-back games seeing the momentum snowball against them, the Trojans showed some mental fortitude and responded multiple times to attempts by Washington State to take control of the game. Keely Eure and Shotgun Spratling return with the latest edition of the Family Feud Podcast to discuss what went right for USC and where the Trojans can still make improvements as they prepare for a trip to the desert to take on Khalil Tate and Arizona on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. PST on ESPN2. In this week's Stock Up/Stock Down segment, Keely and Shotgun both give some props to freshman safety Talanoa Hufanga for stepping in and making an impact immediately...as in second defensive play of the game. They also agree that there was a noticeable difference in the chemistry between JT Daniels and his veteran receivers as the USC offense continues to evolve. Shotgun also makes the unpopular choice to place two much-maligned units in his stock up. He argues that both the offensive line and special teams improved and agrees with Clay Helton that the "offensive line took a step forward." Stock Down is scattered around the team as there are still some team issues that have to be addressed as well as defensive specific concerns and a decline in the playing time and production of USC running back Aca'Cedric Ware. But one interesting note Keely and Shotgun saw in practice is that USC is actively attacking some of the issues it had from the week before rather than continuing to go with the same routine they have previously had. (Audience submissions also make the cut for Stock Up/Stock Down this week.) In the 'Heard it on the Sidelines' segment, Shotgun hears a familiar sound on the sidelines and talks about how the players and coaches reacted to the near touchdown by Michael Pittman Jr. just before halftime and the subsequent review. He also brings up a new sideline alignment the Trojans have implemented while Keely talks about Johnny Nansen's emphasis on contact in practice. The USCfootball.com duo talk about redshirting and playing time for young players in the Agree/Disagree segment. They debate how much Arizona will attack with Tate's legs this week and discuss the importance of each defender doing his assignment rather than trying to be a hero. The Family Feud Podcast is looking to feature your question on an upcoming episode. Family Feud Podcast: USC takes on Washington State21 Sep 201800:56:07
After hitting the road for a second week in a row, Shotgun Spratling and Keely Eure are back in the studio for another episode of the Family Feud Podcast. This week, the duo breaks down what went wrong in Austin and previews what the Trojans need to do in order to get a victory Friday. First off, Shotgun relives the exhaustion of traveling to Austin with the added difficulty of a short week. If the duo is this tired from USC's schedule, how will the fatigue factor affect the Trojans? Could the shortened schedule add a level of difficulty to Friday's matchup? Along the same lines, Keely and Shotgun debate head coach Clay Helton's decision for USC to practice only in shells this week. Is it necessary to practice in full pads during a short week? Will the lack of physicality rear its head on gameday? In this week's Stock Up/Stock Down segment, Keely and Shotgun have to work diligently to find Stock Up candidates following the lackluster showing the Trojans produced in Texas. They both agree that true freshman Amon-Ra St. Brown was a bright spot from the loss. The wide receiver had a career night that has his stock trending upwards. Keely adds a player to the Stock Up column even though he didn't have the best performance in Austin, while Shotgun highlights a solid performance by true freshman quarterback JT Daniels. It was much less difficult to find Stock Down candidates after a woeful performance from multiple USC units. The Trojans were not consistent enough to sustain drives, which bogged down repeatedly between the 30- and 50-yard line. A lot of the concern falls on the offensive line, who never seemed to be able to put together five stellar blocks on the same play and struggled with the Longhorns' zone pressures. Keely and Shotgun wonder if it's possible for USC to have a quick on the offensive line considering that the Trojans will see some of the same stunts and pressure from the Cougars front seven. In the 'Heard it on the Sidelines' segment, Keely gives her take on football in the state of Texas and what the atmosphere was like in the Darrell K Royal - Texas Memorial Stadium. Shotgun and Keely also share their thoughts on how practice went this week and if there were any notable changes. The USCfootball.com duo talk about coaching and offensive line play in the 'Agree/Disagree' section of the podcast, wondering aloud the impact the offensive line has and will have on the team this year, with Shotgun believing it is the most crucial element to the season. Keely and Shotgun also discuss what could happen if USC loses on Friday. Could the wheels start to come off for the Trojans? The Family Feud Podcast ends this week with questions you emailed us (familyfeudpod@gmail.com), including Josh from the Mojave Desert's take on Clay Helton. USC Triple-Double Podcast: Assistant Courtney Jaco joins the show after Women of Troy knock off No. 2 UCLA19 Jan 202401:36:00
The USC Triple-Double Podcast returns with co-hosts Shotgun Spratling and Connor Morrissette (aka Mr. Triple Double) breaking down the Women of Troy's big rivalry win over UCLA in a top 10 matchup at a sold out Galen Center and looking at the recent skid of a banged-up men's team. The Women of Troy remain jumped up to No. 6 in the Associated Press top 25 poll after their big Crosstown Showdown victory, but have no time to rest on their laurels with another huge Pac-12 week coming up. The cursed season for the men's team continued as the Trojans followed their first winning streak since November with more injuries and more losses, dropping three starters and three straight games. Shotgun and Connor break down all the latest action for both teams, including looking closely at former No. 1 overall recruits JuJu Watkins and Isaiah Collier, focusing the spotlight on Bronny James and looking at exactly where the Trojans stand statistically and in the standings. The podcasting duo also look at the positives and negatives of the recent USC basketball action from both squads and look forward to the next week to preview what lies ahead. For the men, they complete their three-game stretch away from home this weekend when they take on Arizona State while the Women of Troy prepare for the second-toughest road trip in the Pac-12 this season, going to No. 20 Utah and No. 3 Colorado. USC women's assistant coach Courtney Jaco also joins the show to discuss the Crosstown Showdown win and what the Trojans improved upon to be able to take the victory in the second matchup against the No. 2 Bruins in two weeks. Jaco talks about her experience this season watching the interest in the team grow, culminating in Sunday's packed house at Galen where she couldn't even communicate with the players on the court at times. USC's career three-point percentage leader also chats about what advice she gives shooters when they get into a slump. Please review, rate and subscribe to the Peristyle Podcast on Apple Podcasts! Family Feud Podcast: USC heads to Texas13 Sep 201800:57:24
Womp. Womp. Womp. USC went on the road in the always-intriguing early season top 25 conference matchup against Stanford and laid an egg. While it wasn't quite the giant goose egg, the Trojans only managed three little quail eggs for points, falling 17-3 to the Cardinal. The blame was plentiful and easily spread among a number of Trojan units and the coaching staff, in particular. Keely Eure and Shotgun Spratling return to the USCfootball.com studio for a rare Wednesday episode of the Family Feud Podcast to discuss who USC fans should be really upset with and where there should be concern as the Trojans take to the road for a second week in a row. The Trojans head out of state for the first time this season, traveling to Austin, Texas to take on the burnt orange Longhorns on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. PST on FOX. In this week's Stock Up/Stock Down segment, Keely and Shotgun have to work diligently to find many Stock Up candidates following the lackluster showing the Trojans produced on the Farm. They do both agree on the positive work USC's backup safeties, C.J. Pollard and Talanoa Hufanga, did once they were thrown into the fix following an injury to starter Isaiah Pola-Mao on the first defensive drive of the game. A couple of defensive linemen also make the Stock Up cut to stay out of the Stock Idle pileup that collected many of the defensive Trojans. It was much less difficult to find Stock Down candidates after a woeful offensive output. USC was not consistent enough to sustain drives, which bogged down repeatedly between the 30- and 50-yard line. It got to midfield seven times and finished with just a single field goal. A lot of the concern falls on the offensive line, who never seemed to be able to put together five stellar block on the same play and struggled with some long, looping stunts that Stanford combined with zone pressures to create disruption up front for USC. Keely and Shotgun both agree that the tight end position had a poor showing in Palo Alto as well, but there could be possible good news soon as Josh Falo has practiced the last two days, Austin Applebee could be be back next week and Daniel Imatorbhebhe did some light work for the first time in more than a week. In the 'Heard it on the Sidelines' segment, Keely tries once more to display to Shotgun that Stock Neutral is a thing...and something all the youths are partaking in. She also takes a look at the vibe on the USC sideline, particularly in the second half of a game where the Trojans were only down by two scores but had the look of a team that had no chance. Shotgun talks about the different punctuation of a quick talk Clay Helton gave to the team right after stretching finished on Tuesday as compared to what Helton said last week about Stanford being the Trojans' toughest game all yea. The USCfootball.com duo talk about coaching and offensive line play in the 'Agree/Disagree' section of the podcast, wondering aloud the impact the offensive line has and will have on the team this year, with Shotgun believing it is the most crucial element to the season -- one that will determine where the Trojans go after their first loss of the season. The Family Feud Podcast ends this week with the questions you emailed us (familyfeudpod@gmail.com), including what Dr. Shotgun would prescribe for the USC team to fix their ailments and whether the Trojans are prepared for a focused Tom Herman and a trip to Austin. The Family Feud Podcast is looking to feature your question on an upcoming episode. Coach Harvey Hyde breaks down the UNLV victory 9/202 Sep 201800:54:28
Coach Harvey Hyde breaks down what he saw in USC's 43-21 victory over UNLV to start the 2018 season. Special thanks to our sponsor ZipRecruiter. Try it for free at ziprecruiter.com/style We start off talking about the offense that Coach Hyde thinks looks the exact same as last year and he has real concerns with the lack of physicality in the red zone. When USC got down inside the 20, it was all quarterback JT Daniels and the receivers instead of the offensive line and the run game. Coach Hyde wants to see more smash mouth football when you get down close and he isn’t seeing that. We also had a question from Earl in West LA about the offensive line not looking ready for the opener for the third year in a row.   Coach also brought up an interesting play where backup quarterback Matt Fink came into the game in the red zone for one play and took a three yard loss. Curtis in Moreno Valley called in about this play, saying that USC needs more room to run and pass when an athletic quarterback comes in because the defense sits on the read option play, looking for the QB to run. Tight ends and their lack of production was a discussed topic on the show and the coach thinks they are only used as blockers and they don’t really even block all that well. He thinks they need to be utilized more in the offense and we had a couple of questions from listeners that expressed the same concerns. Coach feels tight ends can be a great mismatch but you have to get them involved in the passing game to exploit it. Going 5-for-5 on field goals is great for the kicker, but not for the offense. USC really had a chance to set the tone early after a fumble recovery by Porter Gustin. But the drive stalled and the Trojans had to settle for a field goal. Tarik wrote in and wanted to know if Daniels can audible at the line of scrimmage. Coach Hyde thinks he should be able to, that is part of football to get out of bad plays. He said sometimes they would only call a formation and then have several plays ready to go just depending on what the defense would show. Matt in Woodland wanted to know if it is was some sort of record that USC had 26 players make tackles, from Cameron Smith and Isaiah Pola-Mao leading the way with 7 to several players who finished the night with one. We doubt it is a record, but there were a lot of guys getting in the game and a lot of them made plays. Coach also goes off during another question about special teams. It doesn’t look like things got any better from last year and that should be a concern going forward. John from Beaverton called in asking about the offensive line play and what sort of impact having a true freshman center had on the team. Coach Hyde thought Brett Neilon played very well, starting plays well and getting Daniels in a good position to run the play. Keith in NJ wants to know if coach is concerned if Daniels focuses too much on Amon-Ra St. Brown? Coach Hyde said the team shouldn’t worry about who catches what, just go out and win the game. Everyone has to do their part. To learn more about listener data and our privacy practices visit: https://www.audacyinc.com/privacy-policy Learn more about your ad choices. Family Feud Podcast - Ready for the season opener31 Aug 201800:46:41
Fall camp is over. The "mock game week" is over. Game week is here and the Trojans are ready to open the season. In the last week there have been plenty of developments around the teams as USC named a starting quarterback, unveiled its depth chart for the first game and made some subtractions from the roster. Keely Eure and Shotgun Spratling return to the USCfootball.com studio with a new episode of the Family Feud Podcast to discuss all of that and more. They break down the positives and negatives from the week, seeing where the Trojans stand leading into the season opener against the UNLV Rebels on Saturday at 1 p.m. PST on the Pac-12 Networks. In this week's Stock Up/Stock Down segment, Keely and Shotgun discuss the position battles that were settled over the last week, including the two spots in the defensive secondary where redshirt freshman Greg Johnson's technique earned him praise from his position coach and defensive coordinator and the starting cornerback spot for Saturday's game. The dueling duo also look at how the quarterback competition shook out. What earned true freshman JT Daniels the nod over two more experienced quarterbacks and what can we expect from the Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei product in the opener? And even though Daniels won the competition, experience still played a factor in the quarterback depth chart. Shotgun looks at the Trojans' overall team health and where it stands compared to the first couple of weeks of fall camp. He presents a positive picture while Keely questions whether the Trojans are more injured than it seems, particularly with center Toa Lobendahn as Clay Helton has been dropping breadcrumbs over the last week. The duo then dives into the Agree/Disagree portion of the podcast where Keely peppers Shotgun with thought-provoking statements. Could Amon-Ra St. Brown finish second in receiving yards by the end of the season? Is there a logical fallacy between wanting USC to win big against UNLV and also wanting young players to get significant playing time? This episode of the Family Feud Podcast concludes with the questions that you emailed us (familyfeudpod@gmail.com), including Jackson in Virginia's series of over/under questions pertaining to the first game of the season and which Trojans might be the first to accomplish a number of feats this season. Keely and Shotgun are looking to feature your question on an upcoming episode of the Family Feud Podcast. Family Feud Podcast - Mock Game Week Gets Testy24 Aug 201800:50:57
When the USC football team took the field this week for its "mock game week," they may have going through the schedule for a fake game, but the competition was for real. The Trojans put together two of their most fiery practices in back-to-back days leading to great battles throughout the duo of days at Howard Jones Field. Some even took place after the whistle as players got in a number of tussles and dustups amongst each other. Keely Eure and Shotgun Spratling are back in the studio with a new episode of the Family Feud Podcast to discuss the intense week of action. They look at where the Trojans stand with only a closed mock game that Clay Helton said will feature about 40 plays on Saturday and two more competitive practices next week before USC opens the season against the UNLV Rebels next Saturday at 1 p.m. PST on the Pac-12 Networks. In this week's Stock Up/Stock Down segment, the notorious feudsters actually agree on one portion! (We were surprised too.) They look at the safety spot opposite Marvell Tell III and discuss where that position battle between Bubba Bolden, Isaiah Pola-Mao and Ykili Ross seems to be trending. And what affect Ross missing out on some potential snaps during Wednesday's practice could have on that competition. Keely and Shotgun also look into the quarterback competition and see where the needle has moved between JT Daniels, Jack Sears and Matt Fink. And what type of movement could there be depending on who wins the job? In their Agree/Disagree segment, Shotgun surprises Keely with a question on the spot leading to flustered frustration as she debates back and forth how USC's depth chart will look when it is unveiled. This episode of the Family Feud Podcast concludes with the questions that you emailed us (familyfeudpod@gmail.com), including debating the impact of John Baxter being the full-time special teams coordinator and whether or not his units will play any better this season after a rough 2017 that included USC having its fewest number of punt returns per game in school history. Did the poor special teams play last year also hold USC back from blowing out some opponents? They also dive into the Family Feud mailbag and answer your questions!  Keely and Shotgun are looking to feature your question on an upcoming episode of the Family Feud Podcast. Family Feud Podcast: Mid-Fall Camp Evaluations17 Aug 201800:56:25
The USC football team has made it beyond the halfway point of fall camp, but just how far along are the Trojans?  Keely Eure and Shotgun Spratling are back in the studio with a new episode of the Family Feud Podcast to discuss that and more. They look at what has happened in the first 10 competitive practices over the first two weeks and evaluate who is pushing themselves to the forefront and who is lagging behind. The dueling duo jump right into their Stock Up/Stock Down segment to debate who is excelling and who they want to see more from. One of the more interesting cases comes in the form of redshirt junior Ykili Ross. The hybrid defensive back who can play the safety and nickel back positions only had one full practice before tweaking his hamstring. He came out of the spring as the incumbent at the safety spot opposite Marvell Tell III, but having not seen the field in over a week and a half, where does Ross' stock stand? A USCfootball.com podcast this fall camp would not be complete without a discussion of the quarterback competition. Find out where Keely and Shotgun have the quarterbacks in their Stock Up/Stock Down segment and see what impact injuries have had on some of the position battles. The feuders bring back the "Heard it on the Sidelines..." segment to give you some of the most interesting tidbits they've heard while roaming the sidelines and from speaking with the players and coaches during fall camp, including what everyone is saying about true freshman receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and how the dynamic between defensive backs coach Ronnie Bradford and new defensive consultant Dave Campo, a former NFL defensive coordinator and head coach, has played out. Finally, Keely and Shotgun end the show with their Agree/Disagree segment. In this segment, Keely asks if the Trojans should whittle down the quarterback competition after this weekend's scrimmage? The duo also discuss what kind of potential the USC defensive line has this season. Without Uchenna Nwosu, Rasheem Green and Josh Fatu, could the Trojans be even better than last year's team that tied for the most sacks in the nation? This episode of the Family Feud Podcast concludes with a discussion about season expectations and what type of record should be accepted as a quality season and what will be considered overachieving. Keely and Shotgun are looking to feature your question on an upcoming episode of the Family Feud Podcast.
