Who is a perfumer? It's not as simple a question as we might think. The role of a perfumer, along with their rights, visibility, autonomy, and authorship, has been evolving over centuries, with little progress in protecting the most prolific, creative, and influential contributors from IP slavery, forced anonymity, and many other issues.

Social media, in this case, emerged as a hero (for once!), and with the help of the fragrance community and beauty industry-affiliated enthusiasts, we began to uncover the people behind our favorite scents. These individuals have shaped history and cultural legacy, even influencing dating norms to an extent. Who would want to hear on the third date, "Oh, my father/mother wears this scent"? We have an abnormally long memory for scents, yet the people who shape our olfactory history enjoy few rights over what they contributed to society. Is this finally about to change?
