Lessons in Faith from Viktor Frankl: Faith in Action Friday 0114 Nov 202500:04:33

In this first Faith in Action Friday episode, Lessons in Faith from Viktor Frankl, I share how Viktor Frankl’s experience in the worst human conditions helped me reconnect with my own faith. Not religion, not routine, but real faith in meaning, faith in people, and faith in myself. Frankl’s story reminds us that even when everything is taken from us, we still have the power to choose our response. In this short reflection, we explore people, process, and progress through the lens of faith and consider where a little trust could lighten the load we carry.

Key Points:

  • Faith is not ceremony, it is connection and trust
  • Many people have lost faith in something larger than themselves
  • Frankl’s story shows the strength of choice in the middle of suffering
  • Faith reconnects us to purpose, people, and ourselves
  • Today’s consideration invites you to notice where faith could help you breathe easier

Listener consideration:

Where in your life have you been carrying the weight alone when a little faith could lighten the load?

Closing message:

  • People first, process aligned, progress together.
  • Own your mind, move your body, anchor your spirit.

In the episode, I also share how extreme ownership has existed for over 1,000 years and was practiced by Marcus Aurelius, according to Ryan Holiday of "The Daily Stoic." the five barriers we have to accept ownership and the five ways to embrace owning up to mistakes.

How to Improve from Suffering with Viktor Frankl's Tragic Optimism Approach | Foundations Friday 8503 Mar 202300:06:07

Man's Search for Meaning is the most influential book I've read. We learn about Frankl's loss and suffering, but more impactfully, about how he maintained optimism and hope during his agony in the Nazi concentration camps.

In this episode, I share quotes from his book on the value of suffering and three key ways we can all use tragic optimism within our lives.

God and Gantt Charts - Expecting Trials in Life and Rewriting our Personal and Professional Scripts | KEV Talks #2328 Feb 202300:07:36

Great sharing wise words from Father Mike of the @hallowap on dealing with Temptation in life. While Father Mike focused on how we approach temptation in our personal lives, I also took the message to reinforce how we can look at fitness in our professional lives.

In this episode, Kim Colegrove and I talk about her growing up in Kansas City, how she learned Meditation at a young age, the loss of her husband David to suicide, and how she and Pause First Academy provide First Responders and U.S. Military Veterans resilience training focusing on holistic wellness and work-life balance.

Kim Colegrove is a veteran meditator and speaker with over 40 years of experience and the Author of Mindfulness for Warriors. In 2014, Kim lost her husband David to suicide, less than three months after he retired from a 30-year law enforcement career. She created The PauseFirst Project to honor David’s memory and to help other first responders cope with stress and trauma.

Where There is Simplicity, There is Efficiency | Foundations Friday 8417 Feb 202300:03:33

I share my perspective on creating more efficiencies when we teach people core troubleshooting and problem-solving skills like the Foundational Five.

Why Developing Core All-Hazards Planning Skills are more beneficial than using the Hospital Incident Command System (HICS) | KEV Talks #2114 Feb 202300:19:59

My thesis:

"Teaching Hospital and Healthcare personnel the skills and principles of All-Hazards Incident Management pay more positive dividends and develops more well-rounded response skills than teaching the same people how to follow the Hospital Incident Command System (HICS) structures."

So, I believe using the standard ICS is more holistic and beneficial than using HICS.

Episode takeaways:

  • Choose the most qualified for ICS positions, not the highest ranking
  • Let the situation dictate what's needed in Operations, not the preset HICS structure
  • Use ICS for planned events and unplanned incidents
  • Practice with internal and external partners, often
  • Create a Policy Group that complements the core ICS org structure

What to Do When Escalation is Not Enough | Foundations Friday 8310 Feb 202300:02:50

I've found that I can raise an issue, whether asking for a critical decision, guidance, or awareness, that sometimes isn't enough. Sometimes, as Project or Program Managers, we can raise awareness, but maybe we don't have the right people assembled. Or, perhaps we have room to improve our communication around the issue.

In this week's Foundations Friday, I elaborate a bit more on this.

Training is Good, Practice is Better | Foundations Friday 8203 Feb 202300:02:44

During my conversation with Chase O'Donnell, Chase mentioned she had extensive training. She also mentioned that the level of formal training she completed is not necessary for acting or comedy. Throughout our conversation, Chase talked about how many times she was able to act, write jokes, and cold open shows. To me, this practical application is more valuable than the training that sets the foundation. This is what I expand on in this brief episode.

Owning Your Response to Grief | S7 Ep903 Oct 202500:04:39

Grief shows up uninvited, and it doesn’t leave on our timeline. But we can own how we respond.

In this Reset Friday episode, Owning Your Response to Grief, of People, Process, Progress, I share tools that helped me face grief and keep moving forward: journaling, routines, connection, and honoring those we’ve lost.

How to Break Into Comedy and Avoid Student Debt with Comedian Chase O'Donnell | KEV Talks #1931 Jan 202300:50:18

Chase O'Donnell is hilarious, and her Instagram series of reels "If Musicals Were Real" is amazingly entertaining. Chase has been in "the biz" for quite some time. Chase grew up in a suburb of Los Angeles, started dancing at a young age, and made appearances on hit shows, including "Judging Amy."

As Chase grew, she knew she wanted to make people laugh and pursued a career in standup comedy. Along the way, Chase wrote a play called "Too Blondes," in which she and Savannah Brown starred and received rave reviews. Feeling the call for home Chase went back west, kept doing standup comedy, and was fortunate (but also worked hard) to connect with Christina P., who is acting as a mentor in many ways.

Chase is now opening for Christina P. on a national comedy tour, and now Chase has her very own comedy special coming out. Chase's special is called "People Pleaser" and will be released on YouTube on February 2, 2023.

It was a pleasure to meet and talk with Chase, and I look forward to watching her continued success.

Share Your Experience Before Your Opinion | Foundations Friday 8127 Jan 202300:03:17

While walking this morning I listened to one of my favorite podcasts, Masters of Scale with Reid Hoffman. This episode from Thursday, January 26, 2023, was part of the Rapid Response series and focused on how Lululemon CEO Calvin McDonald not only kept the doors of Lululemon open during COVID, but grew the business.

In the episode, Calvin shares how within your first 100 days as a leader it's important to share experiences for teams to consider, but not necessarily your opinion that may sway projects in one direction or another. Calvin also states that your opinion when a leader new to the company may also be wrong.

Are you Effective or Infective ? Leadership Lessons from Coach Prime | Foundations Friday 8120 Jan 202300:05:18

Deion Sanders or "Prime Time" is one of the greatest Defensive Backs to ever play in the National Football League (NFL). In fact, he was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in 2011. In addition to being a professional American Football player, Deion Sanders also put in a respectable career in Major League Baseball (MLB).

But that's not why we're here today. Instead, we're going to focus on Deion Sanders' (now Coach Prime) positive impact on Jackson State University and the coaches, staff, and players there. Coach Prime leads from the front in the show of the same name on Amazon Prime.

Coach Prime's statement, "Are you effective or infective?", the title of this episode, comes from the last episode of the series where Coach Prime puts a vote up to this team and coaching staff to help deal with someone spreading negative vibes throughout the Jackson State University football family.

So, hit play and hear more about how this decision went and how we can all benefit from asking ourselves, "Am I being effective or infective?" when leading or part of sports, project, or public safety teams.

Uncover the Civil War's Hidden Leadership Secrets with JD Baker of OMNA International | KEV Talks #1717 Jan 202301:15:51

In November 2014, I was fortunate to meet JD Baker on the hallowed grounds of Gettysburg National Military Park. JD walked my fellow Public Safety and Incident Management Team (IMT) members and me through leadership decisions made on the same grounds 151 years earlier. This event was called a "staff ride" and was part of the L-580 Leadership is Action course. L-580 is designed to teach senior IMT leaders historical leadership lessons that can be applied in the modern era. This staff ride has had a lasting impact on me personally and professionally ever since.

I'm fortunate to have JD Baker as a guest on this episode as we talk about the leaders, decisions, and actions that shaped the Union and Confederate Armies leading up to the Battle of Gettysburg.

3 Life Lessons from my Alpha Dog Gringo | Foundations Friday 7906 Jan 202300:07:59

On January 5, 2023, my wife and I decided to put our dog Gringo down. He fought a good fight against Lyme Disease and old age, but it was time. This is never easy. We've had to make this decision twice before, and each time it broke our hearts.

Gringo was a true Alpha Dog. He loved humans and set the tone around other dogs. In this episode, I'm sharing three life lessons I'll carry with me that Gringo taught me.

  • Walk with confidence
  • Control your emotions
  • Keep up the fight

Godspeed and RIP Gringo. We know you're leading the pack in Heaven.

How are YOU Mentoring Others? - Reset Friday | S7 Ep827 Sep 202500:05:28

In this Reset Friday road edition, Kevin reflects on the importance of sharing what we know instead of keeping it bottled up. Too often, knowledge, skills, and experience leave with us when we move on from a job, a team, or even life itself. Mentorship—formal or informal—is how we make sure others don’t have to start from scratch.

Kevin shares examples from the workplace, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and fitness to illustrate how anyone can be a mentor, whether by giving pointers, offering structure, or simply encouraging someone to start. Whether you’re brand new or seasoned, you have something to offer. The challenge is simple: How are YOU mentoring others today?

In Lavender Oils for the Win (A Science-Backed Sleep Solution) I share the results of a 2015 scientific study. The study was conducted by Angela Smith Lillehei, Ph.D., Linda L. Halcón, Ph.D., MPH, RN, Kay Savik, MS, and Reilly Reis, MS that included 79 college students that reported difficulty sleeping. Lavender oil patches were used on college students in conjunction with good sleep hygiene habits (see Got Sleep). Alternatively, the other group also practiced good sleep hygiene, but without the added lavender oil patch.

How to Keep Project Managers Engaged by Following Johann Hari's Principles from his Book Lost Connections | KEV Talks #708 Nov 202200:31:50

This year I read Johann Hari's book Lost Connections. I provides invaluable insight into environmental and clinical causes of depression. As I've done in the past, I found value for myself but also for the Program and Project Management professions. So, I parallel Hari's disconnections to Programs and Projects and provide my $.02 on how I believe we can stay connected or reconnect with meaningful work.

Implementing the Power of "I will" and "I will not" statements | | Foundations Friday 7128 Oct 202200:02:45

For 'Words Matter (The Power of "I will" and "I will not" statements)' I recorded in my garage gym this morning. On today's episode I'm sharing a mindset that I’ve worked to adopt recently from listening to ‘s ‘Unfu*k Yourself’

- I will…(insert forward looking /positive actions)

- I will not…(insert what actions and behaviors you will not accept)

It really is up to each of us to determine what kind of life we have while we’re in this world. We can either move towards things, not accept things or stay stagnant. Stagnant things get rotten and devolve over time.

So, let’s not stay stagnant. Let’s move forward and freshen mines bodies and spirits.

- Have a plan So you and your team know what to do

- Stay informed With facts not fear

- Get involved To make life better for you and those around you

From Tactics to Strategy - Stepping Up from Project to Program Manager | Foundations Friday 7021 Oct 202200:03:55

In From Tactics to Strategy: Stepping Up as a Program Manager I share advice I gave someone in the r/Project Management to a Project Manager moving up to doing Program Manager level work.

"Sooo, you're now going to do more strategic work and your focus should be at the 30k ft. level, not the 100ft level. Make sense?

My $.02 for free:

  • Do you have PMs for each project?
  • If so, ask them to help shore up the information you need
  • If not, KISS
  • Gather what I call the "Foundational 5" of Leader/Sponsor's intent, objectives, team organization structure, resources and communications plans for each project
  • To track at a program level you need a list (MS Teams, Excel, Jira, etc.)
  • Suggested list headings
  • Project Name
  • Phase (Discovery, Design, QA/Testing, Deployment, Complete or Cancelled)
  • Estimated % complete (0, 25, 50, 75 or 100)
  • Primary workstream/swimlane/category
  • Owner
  • Status (Not Started, In Progress, On Hold, Complete)
  • Priority (High, Medium, Low)
  • Due/Go Live Date"

Poems from a Young U.S. Navy Hospital Corpsman | KEV Talks #416 Oct 202200:09:28

A bit of a program change this week on Podcast Poetry: Reading Poems I wrote as a Young Hospital Corpsman as I share three poems I wrote in September of 1996. At the time I was a U.S. Navy Hospital Corpsman working in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Bethesda Naval Hospital and aboard the USNS Comfort. I found poetry to be a release from the sickness and pain I saw on a weekly basis.

The Poems:

  • Give a Hoot
  • Hooyah!
  • Circle of Life

Thank you all for listening, subscribing and sharing with a friend.
