Have you ever felt like you're losing your little one as they grow into a teen? Imagine the mix of pride and heartbreak as your child starts to pull away, seeking independence while you long for those cozy, close moments. How do we navigate this bittersweet transition?

Today, I explore the emotional rollercoaster of transitioning from parenting young children to guiding adolescents. It's a journey filled with unexpected challenges and poignant moments of letting go. As our children grow and seek more independence, we often feel a deep sense of loss, coupled with the fear of not being needed anymore. But this phase, while challenging, is also a crucial period of growth for both parents and children.

I’ll share with you my own struggles and realizations during my daughter Esme's transition into adolescence. From feeling like the center of her world to navigating the painful moments of rejection and the need for autonomy, I want you to understand how important it is to reframe these experiences. By leaning into connection, understanding our children's need for independence, and finding new ways to bond, we can maintain a strong, supportive relationship.

In This Episode

  • The emotional impact of children growing up
  • Coping with feelings of loss
  • Understanding your child's need for autonomy
  • Navigating the push-pull dynamics of adolescence
  • Balancing safety and independence

Manifesting the Relationship You Want14 Sep 202300:13:33

As a parent, I have come to understand the significance of positivity and self-belief. In today's world of parenting, it is crucial to reshape our relationships with our children. Instead of labeling them as "difficult," we should view their behaviors as a sign of struggle and support them accordingly. By fostering strong connection with our kids, we can bring a positive change in family dynamics and have a profound impact on our children's lives.

Why I Don’t Correct My Kids12 Sep 202300:17:25

Today I want to challenge some long-standing parenting beliefs, specifically the idea of correction and why the conventional methods of correcting our kids might not be as effective as we think. Children already know when they've made a mistake and our role as parents should be to connect and empathize rather than correct. I encourage you to try a ten-day challenge where you put aside correction and focus on nurturing your parent-child relationships through empathy, play, and affection. I truly believe it’s a journey worth exploring.

Unpunished: Understanding Your Parenting Instincts07 Sep 202300:11:15

As parents, we often encounter difficulties when our children bring up unresolved emotions and behaviors from our own upbringing. It is essential to be aware of these emotions and reprogram our natural parenting instincts so that we can respond with love, kindness, and understanding instead of anger and punishment. Today, I would like to share an excerpt from my book, "Unpunished," along with some useful journaling prompts that can help us explore our own history and emotions as parents. By doing so, we can gain a deeper understanding of our reactions to our children's behavior and improve our parenting skills.

Understanding Your Child's Temperament05 Sep 202300:13:35

As parents, we often encounter kids with two distinct temperaments. The first type values their authenticity and won't betray themselves, even if it means risking their relationship with their guardian. The second type of child remains loyal to their caretaker and will do anything to comply with their wishes, often leading to a lack of personal growth. Rather than resorting to control to bring these kids to a middle ground, we can help them find balance by using connection and unconditional love.

The Mother Wounds31 Aug 202300:12:01

I was deeply hurt by two mothers when I was young, my biological mother who left when I was twelve, and my stepmother who came into the picture shortly after. Both of these mother wounds shaped the way I began my parenting journey and set me on a path that would have been similar for my children.

But it was this that led me to find connected parenting and I was able to change the way I parent and in turn, limit the mother wounds for my kids. If we want to prevent these mother wounds then we have to do the deep transformative work in our parenting.

Today, I'm digging into sibling dynamics. From my own struggles with my sister growing up to parenting my two daughters, it's been a journey. When I became a parent of two girls I immediately started overcorrecting their fights, because I didn't want their relationship to be like mine was growing up. But that only fueled the fire. It took me a while to realize my actions were rooted in my past triggers.

Here's the deal: connection is everything. Sibling relationships thrive when individual bonds are strong. Check out today’s episode and the replay of my masterclass on Sibling Rivalry, it could be a game-changer for you.

Case Study: How We React to Tantrums17 Aug 202300:18:20

Today, I have a conversation with Danielle, who is one of my students in the connected parent mastermind group. We discussed the significance of connection and how providing our children with emotional support during intense moments can have a positive impact on future interactions.

During our conversation, Danielle shared a story about an incident that occurred while camping with her son. Her son had a tantrum and even went as far as pointing a fake gun at her. However, what surprised her was how both of them handled the situation.

How Can We Be More Empathetic with Our Kids10 Aug 202300:11:41

I understand that learning empathy can be a challenging journey, especially if it's not something that was modeled for us in our own upbringing. However, I've learned that empathy is a crucial component of creating a strong connection with our children. That means being present with them, especially during times of big emotions, listening with an open heart, and truly hearing what they have to say. If we can do that, we have the power to turn those moments into opportunities for connection, and that can make all the difference.

Punishing Aggressive Behavior Doesn’t Work08 Aug 202300:13:56

When a child starts hitting, kicking, or becoming aggressive, our initial reaction is often to punish them. However, punishing a child by sending them to time out, taking away their favorite activity, or grounding them for a weekend, does not effectively teach them right from wrong. I believe that no punishment can teach them because they already know what they did was wrong.

What’s going on in these circumstances is that their prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain responsible for reasoning, is not fully developed yet, making it difficult for them to make sound decisions, which happens as adults too. Today I’ll share with you what you can do when aggressive behavior shows up in your kids.

Parenting Is Relationship Building Not Behavior Control25 Jul 202300:11:34

As parents, it's natural for us to want our child's bad behavior to stop. But we must remember that kids will act in childish ways because that's just what they are – kids. We need to let go of the idea that we need to find a parenting technique that will miraculously stop bad behavior and instead, shift our mindset to cultivating a long-lasting relationship with our kids.

My Child Prefers the Other Parent18 Jul 202300:11:43

It's completely normal for young children to exhibit a preference for one parent over the other. This doesn't necessarily reflect on your parenting skills. It's simply a common phase that many kids go through. If your child is going through this phase, it's important not to take it personally. However, it's crucial to bear a few things in mind during this phase.

Challenging Conventional Parenting Wisdom18 Jul 202400:13:59

Ever wondered if punishing your child for bad behavior might actually be counterproductive? Picture this: your child hits their sibling. Instead of a timeout, what if you offered a hug and some empathy? How might that change the dynamic?

I want to challenge some deeply rooted beliefs in traditional parenting that may benefit from a new perspective, such as the notion that punishment is essential for teaching right from wrong. I believe our children naturally desire to do well and that their behaviors often indicate a need for connection rather than defiance. By understanding the underlying needs that drive your child’s actions, you can foster a stronger bond and guide them with empathy and respect.

In This Episode

  • Challenging the necessity of punishment
  • Understanding behaviors as cries for connection
  • Recognizing the inherent goodness in children
  • Responding to misbehavior with empathy
  • The impact of traditional wisdom on parenting
  • Empowering parents to connect with their kids

Schools Need to Prioritize Connection Not Curriculum06 Jul 202300:19:04

The impact of standardized testing on the learning experience is quite significant. Teachers are under an immense amount of pressure to produce results since funding is often linked to test scores. This puts them in a difficult spot, as they strive to educate their students while also trying to achieve good grades on tests. Unfortunately, this emphasis on test scores and the curriculum has led to a disconnect between educators and their students. Our education system is mainly focused on performance, but this approach may not be the most effective way to promote learning. If we prioritize building relationships and fostering connections, we may be able to give our students a better chance at academic success.

Fighting in Front of Your Kids Is Healthy as Long as You Do It Right04 Jul 202300:11:03

It's important to be mindful of how we handle disagreements in front of our kids. Engaging in arguments that involve belittlement, shaming, yelling, or even throwing things can cause anxiety and even aggression in our children. Moreover, they may mimic these behaviors in future arguments because that’s what they were modeled.

On the other hand, by demonstrating how to remain calm and composed during an argument, we can teach our kids valuable life skills. Fighting in a healthy way can teach them valuable life skills and positive conflict resolution.

How Connection Can Stop Kids Hitting, Kicking, and Biting29 Jun 202300:12:51

In our society, there is a common belief that children who exhibit strong emotions, reactions, and aggressive behaviors are the ones who need to be punished and corrected. However, it's important to recognize that the child who is hitting, kicking, or biting is likely the one who is in pain and struggling, and until we can help them feel better and more connected, everyone around them is at risk of getting hurt.

Society’s Need to Diagnose22 Jun 202300:13:37

Today I tackle a big question from one of my Instagram followers about the bent that society has to label or diagnose young kids with bad behavior, they tend to want to put these kids in a box but the problem here is that this box has been created using artificial parameters around rewards, punishments and threats. Today I share my thoughts on what needs to change because we want our children to be more than just obedient soldiers, which is what society seems to be trying to shape them into.

I Don’t Discipline My Kids, Here’s What I Do Instead25 Apr 202300:13:50

When I say discipline, most of us immediately go to a vision of punishing our kids when they do something wrong, like confiscating something or time outs. For some, it can even mean physical punishments like spanking. That’s because we have a very traditional sense of the word discipline.

I don’t use any of these traditional forms of discipline on my kids, that's because they are watching every move I make and will inevitably do the same when I’m not around. We have to give our kids credit for knowing what’s right and wrong and instead, try to model the behavior which we want them to embody.
