Episode 183-"The Importance of the Father in his Baby’s Life" Guest: Roland Warren15 Nov 202200:40:33

Episode 182-"Milestones to Manhood" Guest: Dave and Steven Arms01 Nov 202200:37:49

Milestones to Manhood is a way for fathers to help connect with their sons through a Christian right of passage.  The book is a blueprint that specifically instructs a dad in how to do this for their 13-year-old sons.  The idea is for the boy to look back at that point in time where he became a man.  The book outlines the steps to take and how to do the specific events and can also be modified for any family.

The book outlines specific steps that help make a father and son relationship stronger as well as giving the son other men in the family or mentors to look up to.  There is a beautiful element of surprise for the son in this right of passage that will take him out of his comfort zone. This can be done for sons of single moms as well by trusted mentors and men in the church.  It’s important that these sons also have mentors to look up to and go to for advice.  There are 4 ways that separate men from women. 1. Physical Strength 2. Authority Figure 3. Men are called to be natural leaders, the head of household 4. Provider and Protector.

Episode 181-"Raising the Explosive Child" Guest: Dr.Ross Greene18 Oct 202200:39:50

Dr. Ross Greene sits down with Dr. Meeker to discuss his book, The Explosive Child and the approach called

Collaborative & Proactive Solutions (CPS). Dr. Greene discusses the problems and frustrations that make a child

explosive or implosive. He explains that concerning behaviors are caused by unsolved problems and expectations and

if those problems are never solved, the behaviors are going to still exist until we find a solution. Medical diagnosis like

Autism Spectrum Disorder do not tell us everything we need to know about a child. Each child is unique in the way they

process unsolved problems or expectations.

Some topics covered:

• The collaborative and proactive solutions model is just as applicable to impulsive kids as it is to the explosive kids.

• Concerning behaviors are simply the means, by which the kid is communicating that there is an expectation they are

having trouble meeting.

• Finding solutions to the unsolved problems.

• Identify certain expectations causing the unsolved problem(s).

• Engage kids in the process of solving problems in a way that they’re heard, the caregiver is heard, and we are

coming up with solutions that must address the concerns of both parties.

Episode 179-"Helping Teens Overcome Self-Defeating Thoughts" Guest: Jon Acuff04 Oct 202200:41:47

DR. MEG MEEKER with guests JON ACUFF

Name something you want to do and then write down your first thoughts… Are they positive and encouraging? Or negative and self-critical? How we speak to and about ourselves is vitally important – not only to ourselves, but also to future generations. Our teenagers are watching us, listening to us – What we do, what we say, what we believe, how we act. A parent’s view of anything, and how we speak about it, can instill either positivity or negativity in our teens. The good news is that we get to choose our thoughts, and our words! We can choose to think and speak positively about ourselves, overcoming self-defeating thoughts, and we can teach our teenagers to do the same.

Don’t miss this encouraging episode, where Jon Acuff discusses:

  • Watching out for absolutes (Asking yourself 3 questions about what you’re telling yourself)
  • Disbelieving lies and embracing truth
  • Being brave enough to be “bad” at something new
  • Performance & Teens: Reinforcing character strengths over performance
  • Individual and Family “Soundtracks”
  • How speaking the truth about yourself will help you speak the truth about others
  • Learning to be the best version of yourself – Don’t tell your teen that they can be anything they want to be.. Kids are smarter than we think and they know that’s not really true. Instead, tell them, “You can be the best You that there is.. Be the very best version of yourself!”

Episode 176-"Developing a Strong Faith in a Scary Culture" Guest: Ken Harrison06 Sep 202200:40:57

Ask Christians what they expect to happen to them after they die, and most will say they will go to heaven. And they’ll probably say that they will meet Jesus and hope to hear Him say, “Well done good and faithful servant.” But many believers know they are not living up to God’s calling on their lives. In fact, many might even admit their lives don’t honor God at all—at least Mondays through Saturdays.

In A Daring Faith in a Cowardly World, Ken Harrison masterfully uses his stories as a Los Angeles police officer in one of the deadliest areas of the country to explain and illustrate deep truths from God’s Word. This isn’t your typical inspirational book—it’s a hard-hitting work that packs a lot of truth into an easy-to-read page-turner. Each chapter starts and ends with a gripping story that has a twist, a “rest of the story” at the end of the chapter, and packs intense biblical truth and wisdom in the middle. Are you ready to take the first step towards a more courageous and bold life lived in Jesus? In A Daring Faith in a Cowardly World, find the motivation that you’ve been longing for.

Episode 175-"Raising a Child with Autism" Guest: Jessica Daley30 Aug 202200:37:10

From suspecting something was different with her son early on when he was a toddler, to researching on her own and approaching her son’s pediatrician with questions and concerns, to a formal diagnosis of autism, guest Jessica Daley has been on an unexpected journey that many parents may also find themselves facing. Jessica explains the importance of having a good pediatrician, as she shares, “Pediatricians hold the key and open the door for parents to get the resources and tools that are needed to support our children with autism, so having a pediatrician that you trust, that you feel supported by, who cares about you and your child, is vitally important to the autism journey.”  Jessica further describes her son’s individual needs, which have included speech therapy, occupational therapy and even physical therapy at times, as well as what she anticipates that life will be like going forward, as her son continues to grow throughout childhood and into adulthood. Listen in as Jessica and Dr. Meeker discuss the complexities (and victories!) of supporting a child with autism – shared from the engaging viewpoints of both a parent and a pediatrician.

Episode 174-"Impossible Odds" Guest: Jessica Buchanan16 Aug 202200:38:18

DR. MEG MEEKER with guest JESSICA BUCHANAN

Jessica Buchanan had just completed education advisory meetings in southern Somalia, and was in transit to a guest house where she would stay overnight before heading back home the next morning. She was in a convoy of three Land Cruisers – armed guards in the front, Jessica and her colleague in the middle with a driver and their security advisor, and armed guards in the back. After driving 10-15 minutes, they were cut off by another Land Cruiser, which smashed out all the windows and the windshield of their vehicle. Initially Jessica thought, ‘Wow, who drives like that?’ But then she heard the crack of the butt of an AK-47 on the car hood, and realized, ‘Oh boy, something bad is happening.’

Jessica Buchanan joins Dr. Meg in this “inspirational Life” episode of Parenting Great Kids, sharing details of her harrowing kidnapping experience, and ultimate rescue, which was widely reported in the news. Jessica faced and overcame impossible odds that not only changed and affected her life as an individual, but also as a parent to her children.

Episode 172-"Mental Health in Kids " Guest: Erica Komisar19 Jul 202200:38:08

Clinical social worker, psychoanalyst and parent guidance expert Erica Komisar joins Dr. Meeker to discuss the alarming mental health crisis in America today. How have we come to the place where teenage boys walk into schools and shoot people? How did that evolve? What are the contributing factors to mental health issues in kids today? What are the responsibilities of parents, and what are some common mistakes that parents make regarding the mental health of their children?

The physical, emotional, hormonal and societal challenges that kids are facing today can be overwhelming. But there are things that a parent can do to help ensure a secure foundation for their children. Erica Komisar explains how parents can help their children better cope with loss, rejection, and disappointment – feelings that often lead to anxiety, depression and other deeper mental health issues. Additionally, Dr. Meg and Erica discuss the all-important topic of how we as parents must not be blind to our own mental health, and how we must stop using our kids as a dumping ground for our own issues. This episode is a must-listen!

Episode #171 - "Nutrition & Kids: What You Don’t Want to Overlook" Guest: Dr. Marie Seiler12 Jul 202200:52:45

Kids and nutrition – this may sound like an oxymoron! With the astounding number of food options available today, especially all of the processed items cloaked in clever and colorful packaging, designed to entice children of all ages, how can parents be sure their children are getting the proper nutrition that they need? A critical part of health and development, better nutrition is related to stronger immune systems, lower risk of non-communicable diseases, and longevity. Healthy children learn better, and kids with adequate nutrition are more productive in school, and at play. Some topics covered in this episode include:

·   Vitamin D: Is this supplement suggested for breast-fed babies? Formula-fed babies?

·   Which supplements/minerals are most needed, and at what age should kids begin taking them?

·   Which mineral specifically helps with anxiety, and is a good source of relaxation for children?

·   What is a common misunderstanding when it comes to giving children milk?

·   Handling the picky eater who doesn’t want to eat healthy foods

·   Cooking healthy meals doesn’t have to be difficult or time-consuming! Learn how to simplify.

·   Why family connection during meals is vitally important to the formation of children

·   Substitute healthy snacks for processed ones (which are full of chemicals and actually harm our children)

·   How setting a good precedent for kids in terms of healthy eating begins with parents

Episode #170 - "Raising Emotionally Strong Boys" Guest: David Thomas05 Jul 202200:28:49

DR. MEG WITH GUEST DAVID THOMAS (Part 1)

Boys need to be coached in the hard work of building emotional muscles. For many boys, the muscles are simply weak or underdeveloped. But weak muscles can get stronger with work. Building emotional muscles is some of the most important, yet most neglected, work in a boy’s journey to manhood. Impacting his everyday life as a son, brother, student, athlete, and friend, these muscles will define who he will become as a husband, father, friend and coworker. Guest David Thomas shares in simple yet profound detail how boys can develop the 3 R’s (Recognize, Regulate & Repair) -- Much like a car’s dashboard, they can pay attention to emotional signals that come along, and how the proper response can keep them from facing further damage down the road.

DR. MEG WITH GUEST DAVID THOMAS (Part 2)

Helping boys find their way to the full experience of being human and being fully masculine is what guest David Thomas is aiming for in all his work. Dr. Meg and David Thomas continue their candid conversation, discussing topics such as:

·   What is the value of allowing your son to feel discomfort?

·   Do violent video games have an effect on the emotions and actions of a boy?

·   How does technology affect boys?

·   The connection between “healthy risk” and why boys seem to be less passionate about masculine things than in the past generations

Episode #167-"Adolescent Substance Abuse" Guest:Richard Capriola07 Jun 202200:47:03

DR. MEG WITH GUEST RICHARD CAPRIOLA (Part 1)

Many times, mental health and substance abuse go hand in hand. Guest Richard Capriola explains how parents are often surprised when they find out the extent of either (or both) diagnosis in their teen. They missed the warning signs because nobody told them what to look for. Richard wrote his book, “The Addicted Child: A Parent’s Guide to Adolescent Substance Abuse” in an effort to help parents know what warning signs to look for, which assessments may be needed, what the options are for treatment, and to hopefully make parents feel more confident and less afraid of the topic of adolescent substance abuse, should they need to confront it.

In this episode, Richard discusses whether some personalities are more prone to addictive behavior in children as they get older, or if every child is at risk. He sheds light on the different warning signs parents need to be looking for, as well as how to effectively deal with their teen’s behavior during substance abuse treatment, without the fear of driving them away.

BREAK

DR. MEG WITH GUEST MAX LUCADO (Part 2)

Richard Capriola and Dr. Meg continue their conversation about adolescent substance abuse, discussing which substances are most commonly being used among teens today, including a very alarming rise in vaping. Also discussed is how the COVID-19 pandemic affected adolescents – while the pandemic drove down adolescent substance abuse, it caused a dramatic increase in mental health issues among teenagers, including depression, anxiety and fear. Richard also talks about the effect of marijuana on teenagers, now that this substance has been legalized in many states.

Episode #163 - “Raising Sons of Promise” Guest: Roland Warren19 Apr 202200:40:34

DR. MEG & ROLAND WARREN (Part 1)

Roland shares his own story, as a son of a teenage mom, raised with three other siblings in a home without a father present. Out of this upbringing, a passion was planted in his heart, in regards to the impact of the absence of a father in a home. An absence that not only affects the children, but also the single moms left to parent on their own. If you are a single or divorced mother of a boy, you will want to listen in as Roland speaks out of his own personal experience, giving a powerful perspective of what your growing son might say, if he had the emotional maturity and ability to share what’s going on in his heart and mind.

DR. MEG & ROLAND WARREN (Part 2)

The conversation continues with Roland Warren offering further guidance and wisdom to moms who want to raise their sons in a way that will help them make and keep their commitments, while breaking destructive father-patterns to become better men of character and action.

Episode #162 - “Raising Resilient Adolescents in the New Age of Anxiety” Guest: Erica Komisar12 Apr 202200:38:08

Dr. Meg & Guest Erica Komisar (Part 1)

Adolescence is typically a traumatic time, with hormonal shifts, puberty, shifting social scenes, identity formation - all contributing factors that can make kids vulnerable to anxiety and depression. And in today’s society, everything has been amp’d up, creating more stress in kids’ lives than ever before. Bombarded with increased academic pressure, social pressures, and expectations to be more adult-like earlier and earlier in their lives, adolescents are often dealing with anxieties that are above and beyond what they can emotionally handle. There is good news though! Parents can offer their children hope through being their emotional home-base. Guest Erica Komisar explains how adolescence actually stretches from age 9 – 25, giving parents another chance after early childhood to build the emotional foundation needed to become the secure home-base for their adolescent child.

Dr. Meg & Guest Erica Komisar (Part 2)

Guest Erica Komisar and Dr. Meg continue their candid conversation, shedding light on topics that parents may find themselves facing as they raise their adolescent children:

·   How reacting strongly to your child’s expression of their individuality can cause them to become rebellious

·   How to handle gender or sexual identity issues that your child may be experiencing

·   The importance of remaining calm and non-judgmental through adolescent phases, which are often only temporary

·   How ADHD and learning issues affect a child’s development, self esteem and mood

·   Plus much more!

The mother of three grown sons, she has hundreds of “daughters” whom she has helped launch into productive and fulfilling adulthood. PGK-Episode 160: Teen Suicide (with guest Jason Reid)22 Mar 202200:46:09

After losing his son, a grieving father goes on a mission to understand teen suicide. Jason Reid uncovers painful truths about the lives of teens, the impact of unfettered access to the internet and social media, and the shocking rise of depression among America’s youth. In examining his son’s technology use, he discovered what no parent wants to find. Seeking to uncover the warning signs that were missed, he instead found ways to reverse the isolation and disconnectedness that is killing our youth.

Dr. Meg & Jason Reid (Part 1)
Guest Jason Reid begins this episode by describing the days leading up to his 14 yr old son Ryan’s unexpected suicide. Looking back, he realizes that there were some warning signs, but he didn’t know how to read or respond to those signs at the time. Since Jason himself never struggled with depression, he didn’t know how to recognize it in his son’s life, and he didn’t talk to Ryan about mental health because it was never on his radar to do so – in his mind, depression and suicide were things that only happened to other people. Jason describes how he made the mistake of thinking that Ryan was “just another grumpy teenager” who wanted to be alone more and more, and retreat to his room. On a broader scope, Jason expresses how our culture needs to move from “creating awareness” of teen suicide to actually doing something to change the trajectory of it. He believes that we have the ability to end teen suicide by the year 2030, and answers the burning question, “How can that be done?”

Dr. Meg & Jason Reid (Part 2)
Jason Reid doesn’t want any other parent to have to endure what he and his wife went through in losing their son to suicide. With this in mind, he and Dr. Meg discuss the incredible need for parents to be aware of the mental health of their children. There is immense pressure on kids today, much more so than in years past, and their adolescent brains are not developed enough to know how to process the stresses and pressures that they are experiencing on a daily basis. Parents must not only be aware of their kids’ mental health, but every parent needs to be actively talking with their children about mental health, whether they suspect there may be any issues or not.

Women today typically deal with more stress than in past generations, and often struggle to find work/life balance. What is work/life balance? Is it a 50/50 split? How do mothers today juggle all that is required of them? Christy Wright, author of “Take Back Your Time: The Guilt-Free Guide to Life Balance”, provides tactical steps to create your own version of balance – where you get to decide what’s right for you!

Dr. Meg & Guest Christy Wright (Part 1)

Guest Christy Wright discusses the underlying narratives that mothers deal with on a regular basis, and provides a new definition of the word, balance. She poses the question, “What if balance isn’t something that you have to do, like a verb; what if it is something you can create in your life – to be able to feel a sense of balance in an out-of-balance world?” Another word for balance can be “peace” – You can be busy, and still be balanced, and at peace. You can be confident in your choices and decisions in how to spend your time. But how is this attained? Christy offers practical insights into what balance is, and provides 5 tactical steps to create your own version of balance in your life – you get to decide what’s right for you!

Dr. Meg & Guest Christy Wright (Part 2)

Dr. Meg and guest Christy Wright continue their engaging and informative conversation about balance, and how women can take back their time by creating their own balance that works for them. Fight the pressure of the culture that tries to tell you what a “good” mom is. Pinpoint what is stealing your time and energy. Decide what matters and then protect what matters by setting boundaries and saying no, when needed. It’s different for everyone. But the bottom line is: stop applying so much pressure on yourself. Find the balance that works for you, and begin to take back your time!

PGK-Episode 158: Midnight Dad Devotional (with guests Becky Thompson and Dr. Mark Pitts)08 Mar 202200:29:20

This episode features the Dad-Daughter duo, Becky Thompson and Dr. Mark Pitts, co-authors of Midnight Dad Devotional: 100 Devotions and Prayers to Connect Dads Just Like You to the Father. Men will be encouraged to learn how God is with them through their parenting journey, in all seasons of life, and will be strengthened in their resolve to become the best father they can be.

Dr. Meg & Guests Becky Thompson & Dr. Mark Pitts (Part 1)

Dr. Mark Pitts explains how fathering seems to have moved from being rooted in relationship and connection with their kids to becoming more of a utilitarian role – provider and protector, sans any real relationship. A father’s role is often scaled down to tasks – disciplinarian, driver, coach, homework checker, money lender. Yet Dr. Pitts is finding that more and more men desire a return to being in true relationship with their children and they want to know how they can develop a deeper connection and long-lasting bond with their kids.

Dr. Meg & Guests Becky Thompson & Dr. Mark Pitts (Part 2)

Becky Thompson and Dr. Mark Pitts share further insights from Midnight Dad Devotional, explaining how the daily devotions give men a sense of connection with other fathers, strength for the day ahead, wisdom from the Bible for tough situations, affirmation of the importance of their role, and the reassurance that God is with them, no matter what.

PGK-Episode 157: Teaching Your Kids Not to Worry (with guest Joshua Straub)22 Feb 202200:40:57

Children don’t often know how to voice their worries, and they may even think the things they are worried about are silly or unimportant. Today’s guest, Dr. Josh Straub, along with his wife, Christi, co-wrote the children’s book, “What Do I Do With Worry?” as a way to help parents foster emotional awareness in their kids. Listen in and be equipped to help your kids deal with worry and anxiety in a positive way.

Dr. Meg & Guest Dr. Josh Straub (Part 1)

If a child doesn't have the language to express what they are worried about, it can manifest in ways that show up as disobedience, anger, fear, or in other ways. Experiencing this firsthand with their own children was a major reason why Dr. Josh felt compelled to write, “What Do I Do With Worry?” While many parents focus on addressing the outward manifestation of negative behaviors, Dr. Josh explains how they can dig deeper into their child’s heart to find out if their child may actually be feeling worried – while manifesting a different, negative behavior. The focus should be on the emotion that the child is experiencing, not just the behavior being exhibited.

Dr. Meg & Guest Dr. Josh Straub (Part 2)

As the conversation continues, Dr. Josh Straub explains the difference between worry and anxiety in children. What causes anxiety in kids? How can we best help our kids deal with anxiety? Dr. Josh uses examples from the book to teach parents how to connect with their children when it comes to dealing with anxious thoughts and behaviors: Talk about it. Label specific worries. Be grateful. In a very finite way, parents can help calm their children’s brains when they are worried or anxious, when they sit with them and listen to what they have to say.

Episode #156 - “I Am Here: The Journey From Fear to Freedom” (with guest Ashley LeMieux)15 Feb 202200:42:37

Dr. Meg has a heart to heart conversation with Ashley Le Mieux, who shares how she tragically lost three of her children – two to the foster care system, and one to a premature birth. Rising from the ashes of pain and loss, Ashley describes her journey to finding healing and transformation, and shares how you can do the same.

DR MEG & GUEST ASHLEY LEMIEUX (PART 1)

This episode begins with Ashley explaining how she and her husband were permanent guardians of two children for over four years, and how they were in the process of adopting when the adoption was unexpectedly contested. As quickly as the children had come into their lives, they were taken from them, literally overnight. Three and a half years later, Ashley and her husband also tragically lost a biological son. Ashley describes these heart-wrenching experiences before she and Dr. Meg dive into discussing her book, “I Am Here: The Journey from Fear to Freedom”. Key points include:

    • What if it’s not fear? What if it’s love?
    • Moving forward in the face of loss and sadness
    • How our past can serve our present, which can then serve our future
    • Why happiness is unfulfilling when compared with peace

DR MEG & GUEST ASHLEY LEMIEUX (PART 2)

Dr. Meg and Ashley LeMieux continue their conversation, discussing the process of reimagining your future and reclaiming your power. Ashley introduces a tool called, “Clarity Mapping,” which helps determine priorities in order to create tangible, bite-sized, actionable items for each day. Listeners can learn to move through their pain and loss to find clarity using these confidence-building practices.

PGK-Episode 155: The Heart of Grandparenting (with guest Dr. Ken Canfield)08 Feb 202200:40:40

Grandparenting is different now than it has been in past generations. Many households require two incomes and, with both parents often working outside the home, grandparents tend to fill the gap in taking care of the kids. While this gives grandparents a special window into their grandkids’ lives, it can be tricky in that they must follow the parameters set by their adult children in how they want their children to be raised – often different from generation to generation. Dr. Meg, along with her guest, Dr. Ken Canfield – both involved grandparents themselves – impart wisdom and insight as they share real-life experiences and discuss essential keys to help navigate the joys and difficulties of grandparenting.

DR MEG & GUEST DR KEN CANFIELD (PART 1)

So much of being a good grandparent is being a good parent all over again to your adult children. A strong relationship with your adult child will have a big impact on your relationship with your grandkids. In part one of this episode, Dr. Canfield, who authored the book, “The Heart of Grandparenting,” discusses the importance of reconciliation between generations. Grandparents often desire a “do-over” of their own parenting years, as they realize the mistakes they made, and want to help their adult children do better with their kids. However, grown children don’t always want to listen to advice from their parents, especially when it comes to raising their own children. This creates a tension that needs to be carefully navigated, and Dr. Canfield shares tips with grandparents on how to successfully do so.

DR MEG & GUEST DR KEN CANFIELD (PART 2)

Continuing their conversation on grandparenting, Dr. Meg and Dr. Canfield discuss generational synchrony - the unique relationship between grandparents and grandchildren. If a grandchild knows how their grandparent met their spouse, where they went to school, what they did for a living, and so forth, it helps with their identity formation and gives them a sense of belonging. Children seem to thrive when they have a generational connection with a grandparent, and grandparents have a special opportunity to teach and help shape their grandkids in a way that could benefit them throughout their lifetime.

PGK Episode152: Reconnecting with your Adult Child04 Jan 202200:30:21

We raise our children with the hope of enjoying a unique closeness and intimacy with them all the years of their lives. From the moment they are born, we pour our hearts and souls into them. And as they mature, they have a clear realization that they are fully dependent on us. These two factors draw us together, forming a strong bond. When that bond breaks, the pain burrows deep. The part a parent plays in reconciling with their adult child isn’t for the faint of heart! But parents.. don’t give up! In this episode, Dr. Meeker offers parents a chance to take an honest look at themselves. While providing the difficult keys that parents need to apply to themselves, Dr. Meg also infuses some much-needed “light at the end of the tunnel” hope in the midst of the storm.

    Keys:

    1.) Acquire humility

    2.) Take the first step

    3.) Assume all responsibility

4.) Be willing to forgive, without requiring forgiveness from your child

    WELCOME

  • MEG (PART 1)
  • Dr. Meeker jumps right in by answering the question, “Why is the disconnection so painful?” Parents must realize that if they are experiencing pain from the estranged relationship, then their adult child is more than likely feeling pain from the estrangement as well. No matter their age, every child craves their parent’s approval, attention and love. So regardless of how a parent may feel, it is vitally important that they do what they can in moving towards reconciliation - for their own benefit in reconnecting, but even more importantly, for the well-being of their adult child.

Reconciliation is absolutely do-able. Yet, although the process of reconciliation is simple, walking it out may be one of the hardest things a parent may ever have to do. Dr. Meg shares why, and provides thought-provoking keys and necessary action steps, along with powerful insights as to why it is the parent who must begin the reconciliation process.

    BREAK

  • MEG (PART 2)
  • What happens if your adult child refuses your attempts of reaching out to them? What is the underlying factor motivating them to do so? They may test you, to see how long you will keep reaching out. How should a parent handle a response of defensiveness, anger or a barrage of painful words? Discover one of the biggest mistakes a parent can make when trying to reconcile with their estranged child, and how to avoid it.

Dr. Meeker does a quick recap of the 4 keys a parent needs to apply in the process of reconnecting with their adult child. The process is simple, yet hard; but totally worth it!

PGK Episode151: Babies and Sleep (with guest Dr. Bob Hamilton)21 Dec 202100:57:23

Babies need to be taught human traits early on, and one trait is that humans aren’t created to be nocturnal. Nighttime is for sleeping, and sleep is a learned phenomenon. Most adults don’t wake up and eat in the middle of the night. In the same way, babies don’t (typically) need to eat during the night either. The sooner parents train them not to do so, the sooner everyone will get a better night’s sleep! Join Dr. Meg and sleep expert Dr. Bob Hamilton as he shares multiple proven ways to get your baby to sleep through the night. This will be a win-win for everyone!

  • MEG (PART 1)
  • Dr. Meeker and Dr. Hamilton share different scenarios on training babies at different ages (newborn - 24 mo) to sleep through the night. If babies sleep less during the day, they will sleep more deeply at night. Also, establishing and sticking to a consistent bedtime routine is key to your baby (and you!) getting a healthy amount of sleep each night. It’s best if breast-feeding mothers don’t allow their baby to fall asleep at the breast. Newborns need to be cognizant from an early age that they are being put in their crib after breast-feeding, and aware that you will be walking out of the room as they fall asleep.

Episode 149: How to Get Your Baby to Sleep Through the Night in 7 Days or Less-Dr. Meg Meeker07 Dec 202100:41:00

Chances are, if your baby hasn’t been sleeping through the night, your heart may have skipped a beat with hope and anticipation as you read the title of this week’s episode. It may seem like your baby will never sleep through the night, however it is possible to sleep-train your baby to do so. Babies need a good sleep rhythm, and so do parents. Lack of sleep is one of the biggest factors keeping parents from parenting well. If we could parent from a rested state, we would parent so much better than we do from a place of fatigue. When babies sleep through the night, parents too can get proper rest, and as a result can experience more positive moods and have more patience and energy to spend with their children. Join Dr. Meeker as she shares how you can train your baby to sleep through the night in less than a week! The rewards will be amazing!

Episode 146: Child Sex Trafficking & The Social Media Grooming Process26 Oct 202100:44:45

    DESCRIPTION

Child sex trafficking doesn’t only happen overseas. About 80% of the kids being trafficked are U.S. citizens - born and raised in the United States - kids from all walks of life, all neighborhoods, all backgrounds. And they are not being abducted, they are being lured, manipulated and groomed on social media. Since about 2015, more than half of the kids being trafficked in the United States are recruited off of social media, and the #1 place they are being recruited from is Instagram. Sex trafficking is a difficult topic for parents to talk about, and is probably one of the worst experiences that one could ever have or imagine. It is critically important to be aware of the trafficking dangers all around, especially on social media, and to know the most common methods being used to lure kids in. Parents, you can help guard your kids against online sex trafficking predators and recruiters. Listen closely as Roger Martin, the founder of Humans Against Trafficking, a non-profit whose mission is to use technology to empower people to fight human trafficking, joins Dr. Meeker in this sobering discussion about the realities of child sex trafficking and the grooming process that recruiters routinely use.

Episode 144: Encouragement for Children Who are Adopted and in Foster Care28 Sep 202100:41:58

Imagine not being given a name until you were two years old. Imagine living in constant fear of your father, whom you knew might literally kill you at any moment, for any reason. Imagine becoming a street kid at the tender age of four, after running away from your abusive home life. Imagine having to steal scraps of food, and no one knowing your name. How does one survive such a childhood? This is the extraordinary story of Peter Mutabazi, a surviving street kid who didn’t even think about the future beyond where his next meal would come from, yet eventually became an entrepreneur and the founder of Now I Am Known, a grassroots coalition focused on adoption and foster care. A single dad, Peter has fostered many children in his home through the years. He understands what it’s like to have no father in his life, to be abused, to have no food.. he knows what it means to be neglected. With this personal experience, it’s easy for Peter to relate to foster children, and to help them through their trauma. Listen in as Peter shares with Dr. Meg how he went from being a homeless street kid to a thriving entrepreneur and foster parent -- all because a caring stranger took notice of him, called him by name, fed him, gave him the chance to attend school, and ultimately changed the trajectory of his life. Peter refuses to allow bitterness to keep him from a bright future. He has been given much, and wants to give back much in return. In Peter’s own words, “I can not change the past, but I can change tomorrow.” His goal is to bring love and acceptance to foster children in the very same way that he himself received it. Every parent -- biological, foster or adoptive -- will benefit greatly from this powerful conversation by learning how to show their children that they are valued, seen, loved and known.

Episode 143: How To Talk To Your Kids About Sex14 Sep 202100:24:50

    DESCRIPTION

Kids are exposed to sex today as never before. Social media, the internet, movies, television and music videos typically portray sex in a crass and shameful manner. Our kids desperately need to understand that sex is amazing, it’s wonderful, and something they will enjoy for decades to come.. when done in the right context and timing. Your child not only needs to hear about sex from you, he/she actually wants to hear about sex from you. They want to know what you think about them and sex. You are the one who can present sexual information to them in a positive way. You can empower them to postpone their sexual debut as long as possible, and in doing so, decrease the number of potential sex partners that they will have. As parents, we must be the ones to give the initial talk, and subsequent talks, about sex with our kids. Today’s sexualization of our kids has taught them that sex is dark and twisted, but as parents we need to teach them just the opposite -- that sex is a wonderful gift that should be cherished and cared for. Dr. Meg gives helpful insight and information to equip parents to tackle this difficult subject with their kids.

In this frank and honest discussion, Dr. Meg doesn’t beat around the bush when it comes to talking about sex with our kids -- she shares startling statistics of STI’s (sexually transmitted infections) in our children.. the impact of which goes far beyond the physical consequences. Dr. Meg shines a light on the behaviors and emotions of kids when involved in teenage sex, and explains why depression is so often linked to our kids’ sexual activity. The bottom line? Sex is not for kids. It takes guts to parent against today’s current culture, to train kids to delay sexual activity. Dr. Meeker equips and encourages parents to raise their children above the toxicity and sexualization of the culture, which will profoundly impact decades of their lives.

#142: Show Me the Father (with guests Alex and Stephen Kendrick)31 Aug 202100:46:08

    DESCRIPTION

The role of a father is vitally important. There is a place inside of every child that desperately wants and needs their father’s affirmation, acceptance and love. Yet many families have suffered generations of dysfunctional behavior, leaving those core needs (from father to child) unmet. Fathers in general don’t believe they are doing a good job with their kids -- they struggle to love their kids because they weren’t shown love by their own father. They don’t know how to bless their children because they never received a father’s blessing themselves. Research shows that disappointment in children due to a father’s absence, disinterest, mistreatment or abuse will often lead to a rejection of God, our heavenly Father. Alex and Stephen Kendrick share with Dr. Meeker how we typically get our first concept of what God is like from our earthly father. If a dad is loving and present in a child’s life, it’s easy for them to see God that way. If he is distant, absent or abusive, children will often view God in that light. It’s crucial that we view God for who He really is, and not for what our earthly father was like. The good news is that the chains of any family tree dysfunction can be broken! We don’t have to continue on in the pain and wounded-ness caused by an earthly father. God not only knows your story, but He wants to redeem your story for good. The Kendrick Brothers share how their new documentary, Show Me the Father weaves together four real-life fathering stories, providing an inspiring, hope-filled reminder of the importance of fathers in families and society, while also reminding us that we have a perfect heavenly Father who wants to heal our deepest wounds.
