E129: How We Are Helping Bryce Navigate Through Friendships26 Aug 202400:37:08

In this episode, we talk about Bryce's recent sleepover with his best friend, Michael, and how we helped him work through his hurt feelings and emotions.
It's not easy to watch your son struggle with his feelings of hurt and sadness. It's also not easy to figure out the right words and instructions to help teach your son who thinks in a completely different way that yourself. We are very grateful that the Lord continues to give us wisdom as we pray for it daily!

We also talk about how we may feel isolated at times because we don't have others to help care for Bryce - However, we each need to relook at our situation and make sure that we are making the effort to help others understand our children and learn to TRUST! We know from experience that it's not easy and takes time. We have also learned from experience the importance of being able to have some quality time together without Bryce and to also allow Bryce to spend time with others who love him and want to spend quality time with him.

We also have a "real conversation" about this past week's reading consultation for Bryce and how we worked through a very rare disagreement that had us both in tears because of our hurting hearts for Bryce.  We were also hurting for each other. Autism is  not an easy journey to travel. If feelings and hurts are buried, they will eventually erupt.

Lastly, we shared Bryce's new Etsy Store information: ARTIGRAPHSforAUTISM. Bryce is creating paintings to sell for a new refrigerator. Ours is too boring for him. With the holiday season upon us, we are helping him with his project.

E107: The Challenges of our Crazy, Busy Schedule + Bryce Shares his Vacation Highlights30 Jul 202300:41:27

In this episode, we talk about the long list of activities and services that we have to prioritize and schedule as we roll into Bryce's 4th grade season. It is NOT easy at all. In addition to his school education, each activity and therapy also has significance for Bryce. As his parents, we also recognized the importance of scheduling time for ourselves as a couple and as individuals, too.  We also are making sure that we schedule family time on Sundays for our special fun time with Bryce in our home. It's not always easy to manage with doctor appointments or other unexpected needs popping up, but we do our best and continue to learn that we are working on Bryce's timeline which does not mirror his peers' school timeline. It's definitely new territory for us!

This episode also has Bryce talking about his highlights from our mountain vacation! He asked me when we would be doing a podcast, so he could talk to all of you.

E104: VACATION PART TWO: Taking Bryce Out of our Bubble and into the Real World16 Jun 202300:47:57

In this episode, we talk about the second half of our recent ten-day vacation with Bryce. It's been a few years since we took a long trip with multiple destinations. There were a few times that Bryce's questions and answers made us cringe and laugh. We never know what's going to come out of him when he is out in public being exposed to new places, people, and experiences.

You will hear about our visit to the USS New Jersey battleship and our tours of a submarine, ship engine room, and a historic prison in Philadelphia.  Bryce had his first underground subway experience on SEPTA from Center City to Lincoln Financial Stadium. We talk about our time at The Linc and Sandy's dream come true to have Bryce at the stadium with her as participants in the Eagles Autism Foundation Fundraiser Walk!

Lastly, you will hear about Bryce's Otis elevator tour which was arranged by one of our former Artigraphs Photography clients who works for Otis in New Jersey-Philly area. This experience will be a lifetime highlight for Bryce that ranks above Disney World!

Our next episode will be about the many changes that are taking place for Bryce with his therapists and services. We will also talk about the hyperbaric chamber that we have rented for three months. Our goal is for Bryce to have at least 60 hours inside of the oxygen chamber before we return it.

E102: Bryce's first set of Neuro-Psych Evaluations + Teaching Life Skills07 May 202300:52:58

In this episode, we talk about Bryce's first four hours of testing with his new psychologist for neuro-psych testing as well as teaching Bryce life skills. This was recommended by his vision and auditory doctors as well as his neurologist. Our goal is to identify Bryce's strengths and weaknesses that will help guide us to the best curriculum and tools for his education as he approaches his tenth (10th) birthday in October. It has become clear that he has a learning disability that affects his ability to write words which most likely is a result of his stroke.

On a more positive note, Bryce is asking more questions and has also expanded his vocabulary. We are excited and encouraged by his growth in this area.   With more words, comes more humor. Bryce's delivery of his thoughts and questions have had us laughing out loud more than once the past couple of weeks.

Bryce is maturing and learning how to manage his emotions and behaviors by sharing his feelings with us. He continues to find new language and is articulating his thoughts to us in ways that we are better able to understand. We still have to "crack the code" sometimes, but we sure have come a long way! E89: Our Visit with Bryce's New Autism / MAPS / Functional Medicine Doctor27 Aug 202200:47:13

This episode is a conversation about our visit to Bryce's new autism doctor. This type of doctor is also referred to as a MAPS doctor (Medical Academy of Pediatric Special Needs), or a Functional Medicine doctor.

Our first autism doctor experience helped us achieve our goals for Bryce. After a difference of opinion for the next steps and a bit of a plateua/regression, we felt led to make a change with a fresh perspective as we move into the future.

It was a great decision! We are thrilled to see Bryce progressing again with some changes that we were advised to make with his supplements. Bryce had his first experience with a hyperbaric chamber. The autism doctor visits have definitely been "information overload" but each of them have been  well worth the investment due to the positive results we have seen with Bryce.

E88: Our Amazing "Deliver the Dream" Autism Family Retreat14 Aug 202201:15:19

This episode is a conversation about our recent weekend retreat with the Deliver the Dream and other autism families. We are humbled and honored that we were selected to be the guests of this incredibly kind and loving organization. It was such a beautiful  opportunity to meet other autism families and share laughter, tears, our stories, and suggestions. It was a judgment-free zone that our families were able to enjoy without inquisitive questions, stares from strangers, or a need to apologize.

The Colter Family will be forever grateful for the kindness and love that was poured upon us for three days. We hope that our listeners will learn from this episode that these organizations and opportunities exist. The autism journey can feel isolated and lonely at times. Please remember that you are not alone!

Bryce is a funny, mechanical, HAPPY little guy who was diagnosed with autism at age two and is now eight years old. His pure joy makes this world a much better place!

E87: Helping Bryce with Developing Friendships15 Jul 202200:57:55

This episode is a conversation about a listener's recent questions about helping Bryce develop friendships. We also talk about a new ASD school curriculum that Bryce seems to really like for reading.

We are certainly grateful for all of his progress during the past six years and know that development will continue come in Bryce's timing (and more specifically God's timing). God had created Bryce's brain and we just continue to pray for wisdom and direction to help him.
