A few years ago, I met Marianne Costa in a garden in Avon, France, along with a mutual friend who was on a pilgrimage to George Gurdjieff’s grave, located just around the corner from where I live. We had a fascinating conversation, during which she spoke insightfully about Tarot and her collaboration with Alejandro Jodorowsky, among other topics. Though I was impressed by her depth of knowledge, I remained somewhat indifferent toward Tarot at the time. A few years later, my wife gifted me The Way of Tarot, which Costa co-authored with Jodorowsky. It turned out to be the most practical and compelling book I had ever read on the subject, sparking a personal journey to explore the symbolism of the Tarot. It wasn’t until a few years after that, during a psycho-magic reading in a smoky bar in Paris, that I realized I had encountered Tarot symbolism before. Synchronicities abound! Bio: Marianne Costa, born 1966, holds a M.A. in comparative literature and is a renowned Tarot expert. She has published several books translated in various languages, among which : No Woman’s Land (novel, Grasset 2004), The Way of Tarot (with Jodorowsky, Inner Traditions 2005, German edition Windpferd 2008) and Metagenealogy (France 2011, USA 2014, a study of family as both a treasure and a trap, also with Jodorowsky).  She collaborates with institutions and museums as a symbology expert — most recently with the Guggenheim Collection in Venice and Accademia di Belle Arti in Palermo. Her last opus, an essay on Tarot’s history, symbolism and iconography Le Tarot pas à pas («Tarot step by step ») is already available in French, Spanish and Italian. Her polyfacetic carreer includes being a professional actress and singer, writing and translating poetry, novels and essays, and teaching groups worldwide in Tarot, transgenerational psychology and what she calls « healing fictions », an original technique that combine and surpasses therapy, self-development and artistic expression. She is the translator of Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s poetry in French. Her base is in Paris and she has been a passionate tango dancer and singer for the last decade. The first of a monthly series of discussions, Love or Die, in which Marc elaborates on what he has called 'The global intimacy crisis' and 'CosmoErotic Humanism'. How can we rewrite the source code of the present epoch and create a new story? The stakes are high. It’s Love or Die!

Dr. Marc Gafni is a visionary thinker, social activist, and passionate philosopher. He is known for his “source code teachings,” including Unique Self theory, the Five Selves, the Amorous Cosmos, A Politics of Evolutionary Love, A Return to Eros and Digital Intimacy. He is author of over twenty-five books, including the award-winning Your Unique Self: The Radical Path to Personal Enlightenment. He holds a doctorate in philosophy from Oxford University, as well as Orthodox rabbinic ordination.

Most Gurus wouldn’t admit to having started a cult. Imagine Osho apologising for creating his cult in Oregon, where his students practised actual bio-terrorism! Impossible to conceive of!

But Andrew Cohen is different — a humbled and repentant Guru, which may seem like a contradiction in terms. In any case, Cohen’s harrowing story of meeting the shadow of the Guru is compelling. And in our merciless world of cancel culture, I think it deserves to be told.

Cohen has written a new book entitled “The Shadow and the Bodhisattva” — it could have been called The shadow and the Guru. While he clearly admits his failures and blind spots, he also defends his achievements and the Guru principle in general. A word without great spiritual masters — and access to a vertical dimension — is a postmodern flatland. This new course from PARALLAX ACADEMY’s “Rebuilding Spirituality” curriculum - starting March 5th 2023, aims to explore comparative symbolism and examine the differences between eastern and western arcane symbol systems. We will ask ourselves: what is true in magic and mysticism, and what is new-age bullshit? How can we practice symbolic contemplation without self—delusion and fantasy, or falling into various states of 'egregore possession' or ego inflation?  What exactly is gnosis, magic, and mysticism and how to distinguish between them?  What are the practical uses of symbolic contemplation and work with archetypes?   How do we become symbolically literate?   

We will begin by exploring the so-called 22 "arcanum" of the Tarot card deck from diverse perspectives, such as Valentine Tomberg's Christian Hermeticism, Alister Crowley's Magick, and Alejandro Jodorowsky's psycho-magic.  We will then explore what Dion Fortune called the 'yoga of the west'  or the Tree of life or Sefirot.  We survey some of David Chaim Smith's ideas in his book "The Kabbalistic mirror of Genesis" and his non-dual and "non-emanationist" view of symbolism.   Finally, we will look at symbolism from the point of view of Buddhist tantra, my own tradition of practice.
There will be lectures and dialogue, readings and meditation. With the guiding star of Rene Girard, Tomas Hamelryck makes an analysis of the present culture and the need to distinguish between ritual time and times of prohibition.  Without the release valve of ritual carnival transgression, the murderous scapegoat mechanism and mob will capture the culture; whereas with too much prohibition, the culture becomes rigid and tyrannical.  In the present culture, we have ‘unsatisfying ritual time’ in the form of banal entertainment; our prohibitions are unclear and tend to devolve into scapegoating.  This is why we need to understand the tension between sutric law (prohibition) and tantric transgression (ritual) and bring back intelligent religious prohibition and satisfying art and collective ritual. 

Thomas Hamelryck is a Girardian scholar and professor of machine learning. His research focuses on rethinking the foundations of religion from the perspective of mimetic desire, scapegoating and ritual, synthesising Girard, Nietzsche, and eastern tantric religion.

Owen Cox and Andrew Sweeny talk to OG Rose ( pen name of Daniel and Michelle Garner) about the creative dance between literature and philosophy. They discuss how literature makes philosophy real by putting ideas into the conflict between different human subjects, requiring the reader to evaluate and undergo their process of self-discovery and self-becoming in reading. They discuss the pitfalls of rationality and intellect divorced from the body and how art helps keep the two together. They think about tragedy and trauma in literature and critique notions of "post-tragedy". And they think about the state of modern literature and culture in general, where it goes wrong, and what it needs.

O.G. Rose is the penname of Daniel and Michelle Garner, consisting of Michelle’s maiden, middle, and their shared last name. While at the University of Virginia, O.G. Rose spent several years working collaboratively with other artists at Eunoia, a creative community Rose helped develop. Rose now lives on a farm, manages a wedding venue named Mead Lake Lodge, operates Frozen Glory Photography, and teaches piano using visuals from the DLG Pattern Method.

Layman Pascal will host the second session with David Lynch’s Fire Walk with Me. Fire Walk with me is as controversial as Layman, receiving boos at the Cannes Film Festival for it’s shocking, controversial use of imagery and narrative. In Layman’s words “‘Fire Walk with Me’ has some of the most stark and disturbing commentary on abusive and violence in America, but also a truly spiritual emergence of transcendent goodness.” What’s not to like!

Robert Gray will reverse the darkness in the third session with Japanese Film-maker Akira Kurosawa’s The Hidden Fortress, as two bumbling military deserters are tricked into helping a princess and her most heroic general escape death and bring the princess to safety. One of Kurosawa’s most well received films, the Hidden Fortress is a great introduction to on of the best directors of all times and a dramatic tale of power, deception, folly, and triumph - oh, and it inspired George Lucas’ star wars (and is much better imo), so if you like adventure and fantasy films, this will be a great time for you!

John Vervaeke will take us into the heroic fantasy of The Fall (2006). Critically acclaimed and then virtually lost to the internet due to poor distribution and lack of streaming, The Fall imaginatively challenges the art of storytelling with exotic locations (shot in 24 countries over 4 years of filming), stunning arrays of characters (over 1000 actors participated in the filming), and dramatic narrative as life and fantasy blur for the characters - mystics, warriors, explosive experts, and even a monkey - who grapple with the ups and downs of their complex inner and outer lives.

Andrew Sweeny looks at The Dawn of Tantra by Herbert V. Guenther and Chögyam Trungpa. A basic introduction to classical Buddhist tantra and its practices and philosophies; how it can be practised and understood in the west—and how it differs from Sutra , paganism and Neo tantra.What is Parallax Sangha?
