| Only Three Lads: The BellRays - Top 5 Albums of 1973, Part 1 | 16 Sep 2024 | 01:20:26 | |
**Part 1 of 2!
We're havin' a party this week! Joining us for a lively, laugh-filled exploration of 1973 albums is the heart and soul of The BellRays, singer Lisa Kekaula and guitarist Bob Vennum, who have been gloriously blending high octane punk, powerful soul music, deep blues, gritty garage rock, and whatever else they want to throw into the stew, since 1990. This is a band that defies expectations or pre-conceived notions and transcends any one genre or scene. Their music is all about energy and feel, and that makes them authentic no matter what the style is. To quote their 2020 compilation, It’s Never To Late To Fall In Love With the Bell-Rays. For some of you, it may be this very day when you listen to this podcast. In fact, it’s actually the perfect time to fall in love with the BellRays, because they have a brand new album of blazing rock n' soul, Heavy Steady Go!, and are embarking on a tour on September 5, 2024 - playing some headlining dates on the west coast before heading out for a North American tour with Social Distortion.

Hello, friends! This week on The Struts Life, we explore the magic behind Luke Spiller's unmistakable voice. In this episode, Luke takes us on a journey back to where it all started — his self-taught vocal development. With stories from his early school band days, Luke shares how covering iconic songs from bands like AC/DC and Queen helped him hone his range and discover his vocal strengths. Spoiler alert: unless you were born with Luke’s natural gift, you might not be able to replicate his journey. But don't worry, we've got plenty of tips and tricks that just might bring you closer to unlocking your vocal potential.
Of course, we also couldn’t resist chatting about the Oasis reunion, where Luke shares his excitement and the lengths he went to stay up for the big announcement. Although he hasn't snagged tickets yet, he’s pulling all the rock star strings to make it happen. As we catch up with Luke about his time in the studio, he gives us a sneak peek at the latest project, “Can’t Stop Talking,” and his upcoming solo ventures.
If you’ve ever wanted a backstage pass into Luke’s world, this episode gives you just that—and then some!

| Ugly American Werewolf in London: U2 - The Unforgettable Fire | 14 Sep 2024 | 01:17:43 | |
U2 were on a sharp trajectory up after 1983's War and the 1984 live album Under A Blood Red Sky. With sharp guitar licks from The Edge, powerful and earnest vocals from Bono and a killer rhythm section with Larry Mullens, Jr (drums) and Adam Clayton (bass), U2 were on their way to being the next great rock band. However, the boys yearned for something more than rock stardom and big American fame through disposable pop hits. They wanted a more European sound that was cultivated by the likes of Roxy Music and Ultravox.
So much to the chagrin of Island Records founder Chris Blackwell, they employed Brian Eno (Roxy Music, David Bowie) and his engineer Daniel Lanois to help guide them on a mystical musical journey that would change their sound forever. And while they did score a big radio with with Pride (In The Name Of Love), most of the album is more ambient and often subdued. Deep cuts like Bad, A Sort of Homecoming and Indian Summer Sky may have caught the attention of fans and rock DJs, the album didn't become the game changer for which they may have been hoping. However, it set the groundwork for the next album, The Joshua Tree, which would propel them to superstar status around the globe. As it turns 40, we explore this left turn by U2 which would eventually pay enormous dividends.

| Shout It Out Loudcast: Album Review Crew "Foot Loose & Fancy Free" | 11 Sep 2024 | 02:39:53 | |
On the 56th Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & special guest, author James Campion, review the 1977 legendary album by Rod Stewart, "Foot Loose & Fancy Free."
"Foot Loose & Fancy Free" was Rod Stewart's eighth studio album. It continued Rod's 70's solo artist success. Rod's legendary vocals were in prime condition and he had tremendous band behind him. He had three guitarists, Gary Grainger, Jim Cregan and Billy Peek. His bassist was renowned session player Phil Chen. The keyboard player was Jon Barlow Jarvis and on the drums was the legendary Carmine Appice. This band could match up with any other band in the 1970's.
The album featured three huge hits that have been in rotation on rock radio since the album was released, including "Hot Legs," "You're In My Heart (The Final Acclaim)" and "I Was Only Joking." Those three songs even had videos which were starting to become fashionable. The album also includes typical Rod Stewart ballads, some funk, some psychedelic rock, prog rock and more.
The album made it to Number 2 on the US Billboard charts and has now gone 3X platinum.
The album was produced by legendary Tom Dowd and was considered the last of his rocking 70's albums.
As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew.
This was Zeus' pick.
So tune in to the documentary type of breakdown of the "Hot Legs" video and to see if the guys man crush on Rod is stronger than theirs on Michael Hutchence of INXS!

| My Weekly Mixtape: The Ultimate Gin Blossoms Playlist (Robin Wilson of Gin Blossoms Interview) | 10 Sep 2024 | 00:49:06 | |
In this week's Catalog Dive episode, I am joined by Robin Wilson of Gin Blossoms, and we’re diving into songs from across the band's entire discography, including their massive hits like “Hey Jealousy” & “Found Out About You," fan favorites & album cuts such as "Cheatin'" & "Memphis Time."
We also discuss: the musical evolution of the songs that made the leap from from their original independent release “Dusted” to their hit-versions on “New Miserable Experience;” how a single photograph inspired “Allison Road;” recording their cover of KISS’ “Christine Sixteen” for the “KISS My Ass: Classic KISS Regrooved” compilation; his opinion on how the 1995 film Empire Records compared to working in a record store (something he did for over a decade growing up); the pressure their label was putting on the band to record hits like “Til I Hear It From You” and “Follow You Down;” why their 2006 album “Major Lodge Victory” isn’t available on streaming; their 2024 summer tour with Toad The Wet Sprocket & Vertical Horizon, and so much more!

| Only Three Lads: The Apartments' Peter Milton Walsh - Top 5 Winter Songs | 10 Sep 2024 | 01:36:57 | |
"Top 5 Winter Songs? A winter themed episode, lads? In August?!? Good timing, doofuses!"
We hear you, imaginary (and, frankly, rather rude) podcast critic. And our retort is that our friends in the southern hemisphere are still firmly in the grips of winter. For example, our Third Lad this week, one of the greatest songwriters that Australia has ever produced (and an artist who is on the short list of Brett's musical heroes), Peter Milton Walsh from The Apartments!
PMW has led the Apartments in various incarnations since 1978, starting with the spiky indie pop of the EP 'The Return of the Hypnotist' on The Go-Betweens' Able Label. After brief stints with The Go-Betweens and Ed Kuepper's post-Saints band The Laughing Clowns, the Apartments reformed in 1984 with the classic single "All You Wanted." Their first full length, 'The Evening Visits...And Stays For Years', followed in 1985 on Rough Trade, with the 1987 single "The Shyest Time" featured on the John Hughes soundtrack for Some Kind of Wonderful. Among the Apartments' string of breathtakingly gorgeous, diverse records are 'Drift' (1993), 'A Life Full Of Farewells' (1995), 'Apart' (1997), 'No Song No Spell No Madrigal' (2015), and 'In And Out Of The Light' (2020). For the uninitiated, Welcome to Walsh World!
Peter stopped by in between sessions for a forthcoming record. Just as a small forewarning, we recorded our lists afterwards...so any juvenile, off-topic or off-colour side conversations about pillows, tank tops, getting lost in department stores, or Art Garfunkel lookalikes are no reflection on the pure class of Mr. Walsh. Hopefully, to quote the man himself, we didn't "take something good and make a mess of it".
Special thanks to Marc Shea from the great fellow Pantheon show Performance Anxiety for the introduction, and much gratitude to Peter's wife Kate for the coordination. This was an incredible thrill for us!

| Love That Album - Interview with Glen Humphries, author of "Aussie Rock Anthems: The Stories Behind Our Biggest Hit Songs" | 07 Sep 2024 | 01:21:25 | |
As music lovers, we've all had a soundtrack to our lives....it's provided to us by the radio. Maybe at this point in the 21st century, that's less of a given. Was it the internet that killed the radio star? Who can truly say, but for most of the rock era, radio has provided songs that millions of music fans would discover, sing along to, discuss with their friends, learn to play on their instrument of choice, get amorous to, get stoned to, or cherish for some personal reason.
Welcome to episode 179 of Love That Album.
It's been said that in the early days of rock and roll, tyranny of distance made Australian music tougher than its Northern Hemisphere counterparts. Henry Silva might have asked, “Bullshit Or Not?” What is for certain is that Australian rock musicians could often become huge in their home country, but not raise an eyebrow anywhere else (the reverse is also true, but that's a story for another episode).
Author Glen Humphries has just published a terrific book called “Aussie Rock Anthems: The Stories Behind Our Biggest Hit Songs". He writes 40 essays about popular songs from the 1960s through to the first decade of the 21st century. These essays tell stories about songs that many Australians grew up with. Some became popular outside our borders, some didn't. These songs show a huge diversity – where else will you get Shadap You Face occupying the same tome as Khe Sanh? At some stage or another, these songs all meant something to the wider Australian populus, and Glen weaves fascinating tales that cover politics, sporting pride, cultural cringe, and musical invention. I was rapt to have someone to discuss these songs with me. Neither of us were fans of every one of the songs covered in the book, and inevitably, people will argue about what was left out. What's important is that these songs all have interesting backstories and are worthy of being celebrated.
Tune into find which songs Glen and I absolutely detest...and those we love.
You can watch the videos of all the songs in the book at:

| Ugly American Werewolf in London: Oasis Reunion Hot Take 1 | 07 Sep 2024 | 00:52:13 | |
Oasis was one of the world's biggest bands in the 90s and 2000s. Led by main songwriter and lead guitarist Noel Gallagher and lead singer Liam Gallagher, the band achieved heights rarely seen. But in the UK, Oasis were about as big as The Beatles and were the soundtrack to a moment in time around Cool Britannia and forward looking socioeconomic and political change at the time. Though they didn't become nearly as popular in the US, they attracted a core fan base including The Wolf (eventually). We've done shows in the past on the difference between the band's success in the US vs. the UK (episode 78).
When they announced 14 dates (now 17) in 5 cities in the UK and Ireland on August 27, it was the biggest news around the world. So we felt compelled to give you our Hot Take reactions to the announcement, when and where they were playing, how we could attempt to get tickets, who will be playing in the band (Paul "Bonehead" Arthurs and Gem Archer have been confirmed) and where they might go after those initial dates. As some additional information has come out since we recorded our Hot Take, we address that news at the end of the show. We're beyond excited for this reunion but worried we might be left out in the cold on tickets! Should we pay way too much for 2nd hand tickets and see their first few shows before they breakup? Should we stay put and hope they come to the US? We discuss it all and hope for the best!

| I'm In Love With That Song: Big Star - "September Gurls" | 06 Sep 2024 | 00:22:29 | |
One song can’t really define a whole genre, but “September Gurls” by Big Star comes pretty damn close – it IS the sound of Power Pop. Jangly guitars, plaintive vocal, angelic harmonies, all neatly wrapped up in under 3 minutes. It became a template to inspire bands as diverse as R.E.M., Cheap Trick, The Bangles, KISS, and The Replacements. Discover why Big Star is often called “the most influential band you’ve never heard of”.

| What Difference Does It Make: Pop Songs 1984 vs. 2017 | 06 Sep 2024 | 00:59:48 | |
Most people believe the year they graduated high school was the greatest year in pop music history. We put that theory to the test as we match up the year Dave graduated high school, 1984, against 2017, the year his daughter, Emma, graduated. It's quite a battle, and you may be surprised to find, like Holly, that you might like the songs from 2017 a bit more than those from 1984. This is not a "grody to the max (1984) episode nor is there any "clapback" or "facepalms" #2017, just a gnarly (1984) chat and some banging #2017 tunes.

| Performance Anxiety - John Ford Coley | 05 Sep 2024 | 01:24:45 | |
Today’s guest should probably do his own podcast. Welcome John Ford Coley to the show. He’s a great storyteller with a lifetime of stories to share. He grew up outside of Dallas where he was classically trained on piano as a kid. He grew up on opera, show tunes, and church music. But rock and roll wormed its way into his soul and he struck a deal with his piano teacher to show him how to play popular songs. While John is most well known for his band England Dan and John Ford Coley and what is now known as yacht rock. But his early bands were a bit heavier. At one point, he even opened for Vanilla Fudge and Led Zeppelin. But that’s when John and Dan started creating their softer music.
John talks about how he met his musical partner, Dan Seals, and how they got their monikers, England Dan and John Ford Coley. He reveals the greatest mistake he’s ever made, the coincidence that got him in the studio to watch a Joni Mitchell session, and working with former podcast subject, Jim Gordon. After hits like I’d Really Love To See You Tonight, Sad To Belong, & We’ll Never Have To Say Goodbye Again, the duo had run its course. John played in some other musical projects before getting into acting. His Godfather connections helped out there. He eventually left music all together. But he couldn’t stay away forever. The emergence of yacht rock revitalized his career (except in The Philippeans, where he’s basically royalty). He tours, playing his hits and telling stories. I’ve seen him live and it’s a treat. Check him out on Facebook at John F, Coley. His music is streaming and also on his website johnfordcoley.com where you can stay up to date with him. You can follow us @PerformanceAnx on socials. Merch is at performanceanx.threadless.com. We accept coffee money at ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety. Now let’s party like it's 1979 with John Ford Coley on Performance Anxiety, part of the Pantheon Podcast Network.

| First Concert Memories #14: Scott Holiday of Rival Sons on Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers | 04 Sep 2024 | 00:42:59 | |
As a teenager, did you ever fantasize about sitting at home when there was a knock at the door, only to find that there stood 3 young California Girls ready to take you on an adventure for the night? Well Scott Holiday, lead guitarist of Rival Sons, didn't have to dream about it because it happened to him on June 10, 1995 as an 18 year old living in Huntington Beach. So as a red-blooded American boy, he naturally jumped in with them to The Hollywood Bowl to see Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers.
But the story takes a turn when an unexpected addition to the evening comes in the form of a party favor before the show starts. From there it's a journey great music, bright lights, giggly girls, a quest to find the car and a trip back to Huntington Beach. It was a memorable night for Scott (and I'm sure for the ladies as well) and now he and Rival Sons are making memories on co-headliner bill with Clutch in the US this fall. Skip Taylor's life and times are part of rock legend. He cut his teeth in the LA music scene in the 60s working with the who's who of rock at the time. However, Skip is best known as Canned Heat's manager and has been managing the band since the mid-60s, shortly after discovering them playing at a UCLA frat party. Also playing at that fateful frat party were The Doors, and he shares how he got both bands a record deal. Skip was in the center of it all at Woodstock and Monterey Pop, and recounts his adventures in opening Kaleidoscope, the hot nightclub in Hollywood that became a short-lived dream thanks to some greedy LA gangsters.
This interview is packed with great stories from a guy who was in the middle of some of the greatest rock moments of the time, so let’s get into it!

| The Metallica Report 57: Kirk Hammett; James Hetfield; Metallica’s Tour Manager, Eric Johnson | 03 Sep 2024 | 00:29:34 | |
The week of August 28, 2014 on The Metallica Report…
Our two favorite guitarists stop by for a little chat with Steffan and Renée.
With Metallica getting ready to hit the stage at Lumen Field this weekend, Kirk thinks back to another visit to Seattle, 35 years ago, when the band played possibly the fastest version of “Whiplash” we’ve ever heard.
Then, James talks Westerns and what it was like on the set of The Thicket, the new film starring Peter Dinklage and Juliette Lewis. The film also features none other than Papa Het in his element out in the wilderness.
Finally, Eric Johnson, Metallica’s Tour Manager, shares his version of life on the road and how he stays busy during the downtime with his own artistic expression.
