On the show today is Ed Maunder. Ed is an exercise physiologist with expertise in metabolic responses to endurance exercise, and metabolic adaptations to endurance training. Ed is a Lecturer in the School of Sport and Recreation and part of the Sport Physiology and Nutrition Research Group at SPRINZ. Ed is also a British Association of Sport and Exercise Science (BASES) accredited applied exercise physiology practitioner in the Sports Performance Clinic at AUT Millennium. Ed holds a BSc (Hons) in Sport and Exercise Science from the University of Bath (UK), an MRes from the University of Birmingham (UK), and a PhD from AUT. Ed won the 2018 BASES Masters Dissertation of the Year Award for his work on carbohydrate nutrition in recovery from acute exhaustive endurance exercise. Ed was awarded a prestigious Education New Zealand International Doctoral Research Scholarship for his PhD, which investigated the effect of exposure to environmental heat stress on acute metabolic responses to endurance exercise, and skeletal muscle and metabolic adaptations to endurance training.

On today's episode is ultramarathon runner and coach Zach Bitter. He held world records for the 100-mile run (track) and the 12-hour run. Bitter claimed both records with his performance during the Six Days in the Dome event in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on August 24, 2019. His 100-mile time of 11 hours, 19 minutes and 13 seconds, bested Oleg Kharitonov’s 2002 world record by almost 11 minutes, and was more than 20 minutes faster than his own American mark of 11:40:55.  After claiming the 100-mile record, Bitter continued running for another 40 minutes and upped his own 12-hour distance world record to 104.8 miles, an improvement of more than three miles over the previous mark.

Dr Bellinger is a young, emerging researcher with a track record in enhancing athletic performance through nutritional modulation and supplementation, and via manipulation of training. More recently, Dr Bellinger has employed a technique using MRI and spectroscopy to identify the muscle typology of elite athletes in order to use this information to fast track promising young athletes to senior success and to individualize exercise training.

On the today's episode is Dan Fichter. Dan  has been involved in strength and conditioning for well over 20 years, Wannagetfast became a reality in his garage in the early 2000s. With boots on the ground in the early 90’s, Dan has studied closely with some of the elites in the field of physical preparation.  Dan has a very diverse education that literally spans the globe. Dan was responsible for designing and implementing speed, strength, conditioning, and mobility training programs for athletes in men’s lacrosse, alpine ski, volleyball, tennis, swimming, basketball, football, lacrosse, and a variety of other sports. As a high school coach Dan has won 8 sectional titles in track and football and has coached numerous professional athletes, olympians, and some of the most high-profile hockey and lacrosse players in the world.  Fichter has traveled the country lecturing to numerous NFL, MLB, NHL, on speed training, strength training, and nervous system development and how to pull these elements into a comprehensive package.  At the High School level Dan teaches fundamental postural and force absorption techniques, and how it easily translates into sporting prowess and bullet proofing against injuries.

Today on the show is Dr. Phil Price. Phil is a Senior Lecturer for BSc Strength and Conditioning Science and also lectures on the MSc S&C programme and the Masters of Research programme at St Mary’s University. Phil has been teaching at St Mary’s for nine years. Phil completed his BSc in Sport, Health and Exercise Science at St Mary’s University back in 2008, completed his Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education (PGCHE) in 2011, and his MSc in Strength and Conditioning Science in 2012. Phil completed PhD in Bioengineering from St Mary’s University in 2018, which investigated the use of a musculoskeletal model for the assessment of knee osteoarthritis. Phil is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (NSCA), an Accredited Strength and Conditioning Coach (UKSCA), and is a former lead tutor for the British Weightlifting Association (BWL). Phil has over 8 years of experience in S&C delivery to athletes from a wide range of sports, including rugby, ice hockey and combat sports. He is the former head S&C coach of Ealing Trailfinders RFC and has worked with athletes ranging from national to international level. Away from St Mary’s, Phil enjoys attempting all sports, competes in obstacle course racing, and loves mountaineering and reading.

Derek is an International Sport Performance Consultant that has been working with athletes all ages and abilities in speed, strength and power sports since 1988. His coaching career started in Track and Field, providing instruction to sprinters of all ages eventually working with collegiate sprinters, hurdlers and jumpers. His career evolved rapidly working closely with some of the top performers in the world as a coach and a consultant – including Olympic medalists, world record holders, Canadian National team athletes, and professional athletes from numerous sports. He worked as the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach for Simon Fraser University for 14 years, the first non-US member of the NCAA. He also serves as a performance consultant to numerous professional teams in the NFL, NBA, MLS and NHL, as well as major NCAA Division 1 programs throughout North America, specializing in speed development, strategic performance planning, return-to-competition protocols and neuromuscular electrical stimulation programming. Derek is asked to speak on speed development and high performance training on a regular basis for major events around the world and has also authored a number of books, chapters and journal articles on these subjects.

Dr. Moore is a Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Medicine and joined the school in 2013 as a postdoctoral researcher and became a lecturer in 2015. Dr. Moore spent six years at the University of Exeter, completing her undergraduate degree and PhD thesis entitled "Running self-optimisation: Acute and short-term adaptations to running mechanics and running economy". Her research currently focuses on running gait retraining and she also works on several injury epidemiology projects, advising National Governing Bodies on injury prevention and management strategies.

She has published in a range of international peer reviewed journals and has experience conducting biomechanical gait assessments for a range of elite and non-elite athletes (runners, triathletes, amputee sprinters, marines, rugby players and tennis players).

On the show today is Abdullah Zeinab. Abdullah, as of late has cut his teeth in the ultra endurance cycling world. Winning the Indian Pacific Wheel Race 5,450km in 14 days and Trans-America Bike Race 6,800km in 16 days 9 hours 56 minutes, which stands as a record. Both of these were his first attempts at each of the races. Then after these endeavours he went on to total 904km in 24hrs on his second attempt at the 24hr time trial. Outside of ultra endurance Abdullah is a man well beyond his years in wisdom. He shares a ton of great insights within this podcast. Today on the show is Doctor Philip Skiba. You may recognize Dr. Skiba from the famous Nike Breaking 2 documentary, where he, and a few other selected scientists worked with a group of elite runners to break the two hour marathon barrier. Dr. Skiba is a board certified physician in family medicine and sports medicine. Also, he has a Phd in exercise physiology from the Jones Lab in University of Exeter, and has published many great papers in the field. He holds the role as team physician for the University of  Illinois and the physician to many other professional, university, and high school athletes. On top of that he has trained some of the most elite elite endurance athletes in the world. Lastly, he is the program director for sports medicine fellowship at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, in Chicagoland, and is Regional Director of Sports Medicine for the Advocate Aurora Medical Group.

Evan spent many years out of Training Think Tank testing and coaching elite crossfitters and also consulting for the military, professional sport teams, professional athletes, and coaches. He is currently the chief physiologist and bioscientist for NNOXX  a biotech company.
