The right SEO strategy can help to grow your practice. In this episode, Gilly is joined by the founder of Market Your Clinic Online, Chris Dann. Clinic not working perfectly? Book a free chat with Gilly to find out how to fix it! bit.ly/osteobizchat

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • There are a lot of misconceptions around SEO and the biggest misconception is that SEO is something that you do to your website and then it's done and then that's it.
  • If you have plenty of information on your website, downloadable resources and explainer videos, Google is going to rank your website favourable as it will provide the person searching with the information they need.
  • If you want to have your website rank well for Google searches, you need to consider what other organisations are saying about you on their website. Do you have good reviews? Are you reputable?
  • A good example of SEO is where other websites produce backlinks on their sites and direct users to your website. An example of this is partnering with your local library, and care homes and offering referred traffic a discount.

BEST MOMENTS

“If you go back 20 years, Google was quite a simple indexing algorithm. These days Google is vastly more sophisticated.”

“Offering plenty of value and usefulness to the user is the first part of a successful SEO strategy.”

“Trust signals across multiple sites will result in a better SEO ranking for your clinic.”

LGBT Inclusive Healthcare with Philippa Oakley02 Oct 202200:49:31

Gilly is joined by experienced chiropractor and founder of Acorn Health, Philippa Oakley. Together they discuss Phillippa’s journey into healthcare, the challenges the LGBTQ plus community faces and why PTSD and post-traumatic stress can hugely impact brain development and cause ongoing pain.

Clinic not working perfectly? Book a free chat with Gilly to find out how to fix it! bit.ly/osteobizchat

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • It is recognised that there is an enormous barrier to meeting the health care needs of LGBTQ communities. There are systemic failings in place and the health inequalities, that the LGBTQ community experience has a very real impact on their health trajectories.

  • The LGBTQ plus community has an increased prevalence of certain conditions like PTSD to post-traumatic stress disorder which can cause an enormous impact on the brain and the way that the brain develops as a child who is perhaps growing up.

  • Research over time shows that microaggressions do actually have an impact on somebody's health experience. PTSD is widely accepted as an illness that is predisposed to developing persistent pain or developing ongoing pain and we know that the LGBTQ plus community are at an increased risk of PTSD.

  • Statistically, there are an enormous amount of, um, LGBTQ plus people in the UK who aren't seen by any healthcare professionals. It’s estimated that 20% of LGBTQ plus do not have any healthcare professionals aware of their sexual orientation.

BEST MOMENTS

“We start at the very beginning.”

“As a chiropractor, there is a role that we can place in addressing health inequalities and being aware of the impact of those inequalities on the patient.”

“Different groups and different demographics of people have specific health needs is something that I think we can broadly accept to be true.”

How to Thrive in a Recession24 Sep 202200:06:56

Let's talk about how to thrive in a recession. Discover why a recession can actually be a time for great opportunity, innovation and acceleration in your business, learn how to double down on your marketing and resonate with new customers, understand how to invest in yourself and uncover the right strategies to thrive during tough times in today’s episode of the Osteobizness podcast.

Clinic not working perfectly? Book a free chat with Gilly to find out how to fix it! bit.ly/osteobizchat

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Cutting your marketing spend will dry up the lifeblood of the business by slowing down the influx of new clients. In a recession, the last thing you should do is cut your marketing budget, instead, you should look to invest, even more, innovate and solve the problems of your community to drive more business to your clinic.

  • In a recession, businesses will tighten their belts and strangulate their business at a time when actually it's a good moment to accelerate.

  • The businesses that do well in a recession are the ones who invest in themselves, look at the problems of their clients and innovate with ideas to add value and help them further.

  • Keep repeating what your customers tell you and put it back out there in your marketing, and you will resonate with other people with the same problem. Marketing through a recession will enable you to come through the other end faster and ahead of the competition.

BEST MOMENTS

“It doesn't have to be all bad in a recession.”

“Your competitors might cut back, play small and be fearful which could be an opportunity for you.”

“The best thing you can do is double down and market yourself”

Having a Cash Cushion10 Sep 202200:05:07

Recession-proof tip number nine, keeping a cash cushion in the bank. Join Gilly as she explains why in the current economic climate, it's essential to cover your business expenses with cash in the bank. Learn how to overcome turbulent times, invest in your practice and increase profitability.

Clinic not working perfectly? Book a free chat with Gilly to find out how to fix it! bit.ly/osteobizchat

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • The rate of inflation is high and the cash we have in the bank is consistently being devalued. So it buys us less and less and clinic owners are feeling the pinch.

  • Having three months' worth of expenses in cash set aside will protect you if anything happens to derail your business. Having cash available will help you overcome turbulent times and ride out any months when you see patient numbers dip.

  • Keep a cash cushion behind you to cover expenses and invest a small portion towards improving your business, growing it, increasing patient numbers, making it more efficient and increasing profitability.

BEST MOMENTS

“It’s really important to have some cash available in case you need it.”

“A little cash cushion gives you a lot of relief and keeps debt off of your credit cards.”

“We’re all in business to make a reasonable profit so we can look after our families.”

“If there is a further downturn in the economy it's gonna bite.”

Clinic not working perfectly? Book a free chat with Gilly to find out how to fix it! bit.ly/osteobizchat

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • When in a recession we need to audit our finances and only keep what is essential to keep our business growing. For example, marketing costs are vital as it keeps you front of mind in your community and drives patients to your clinic.

  • Tighten up your finances and be circumspect about what you invest your money in. Be careful you’re not spending all of your income on learning, courses and education because whilst important you need to focus your finances on what is going to grow your business today.

  • If you’re spending money on enhancing your skills which will lead to more patients and a service that your competitors don’t offer then it’s a worthwhile investment.

BEST MOMENTS

“Tighten up your finances and go through everything on your bank statement.”

“Please don't spend all of your money on stuff that isn't vital for right now. Just be a little bit cautious.”

“Look at everything and get rid of anything that isn't vital to running or growing your clinic at the moment.

“You can still grow during a recession.”

Clinic not working perfectly? Book a free chat with Gilly to find out how to fix it! bit.ly/osteobizchat

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Analyse your patient journey and identify where you can improve your service and enhance their experience. This could be focusing on follow up appointments, providing them with a treatment plan or simply educating them on how to avoid.

  • Aim to offer the absolute gold standard service to your patients. Take money out of the equation and look at the value you’re offing them. The patient won’t care about money if they get the very best outcome.

  • Focus on the outcome and tweak the way that you operate to give an even better service because if things are tough out there, those that don't give great service are the ones that are in trouble.

BEST MOMENTS

“You're already giving a great service, but I would urge you to look at the patient journey.”

“Have you given your patient the best possible outcome for their pain?”

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • In a recession, the first thing a lot of companies do is axe their marketing department but you should never cut off the people that bring in new business. Never stop promoting your brand, your services and what you do to help people.

  • Companies that cease marketing activity during a recession are the ones that will fail.

  • During a recession, your marketing activity needs to educate and inform the people in your community about what you do and how you can help them. Marketing will keep your income consistent during tough economic times.

  • Clinics cannot solely rely on word of mouth because it is very difficult to grow and you do not have any control over when it stops. Focusing on marketing and education will help to generate a pipeline of patients for your practice.

BEST MOMENTS

“In large companies, you can get lost as a cog in a wheel without making any real difference.”

“Getting rid of the marketing department in a recession is the worst thing that you can do.”

Having a Recession-Proof Mindset16 Jul 202200:06:22

Welcome to a brand new series focusing on recession-proofing your business. Join Gilly as she dives into all of the talk around an economic downturn and how you can change your mindset from negative to positive and why there’s actually a lot of opportunity for your practice in a recession.

Clinic not working perfectly? Book a free chat with Gilly to find out how to fix it! bit.ly/osteobizchat

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What you’re thinking and feeling about your business is so important because if you’re in a state of panic, worry or anxiety, it’s going to filter through, into everything else you do.

  • Sometimes a recession that is so often viewed negatively could be a huge opportunity. It could be the best thing to happen to your business.

  • Recessions come and go and as an economy, we go through boom or bust periods but it’s all cyclical and continuously changing. We might think we're in one static period at a time but we never are.

  • If you change your mindset and always aim to look for opportunities, you will start to operate your business differently and evolve how you serve your community, earn money and add value to your patients.

BEST MOMENTS

“We are always in a state of flux and things are either moving towards a recession or out of a recession.”

“There will always be people who do well because their eyes are open to opportunities.”

“We need to work on ourselves, give ourselves space and catch ourselves when we’re thinking negatively.”

“Often all of the worry and anxiety is pointless because in the end, nothing really bad could happen in the future.”

Living with Uncertainty in Business02 Jul 202201:03:02

In an exciting new episode of The Osteobizness podcast, Gilly shares a recording of her keynote speech, courtesy of the Midlands Osteopathic Society. Learn how to thrive in uncertain times and why the mindset, market, manage and money model can help you achieve your goals.

If you'd like Gilly to come and speak virtually (or maybe in person!) at your Regional Society, please get in touch via email: gilly@osteobiz.com

Clinic not working perfectly? Book a free chat with Gilly to find out how to fix it! bit.ly/osteobizchat

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Preparation is the key to success and in the midst of chaos, there is always an opportunity. In uncertain times we need to stay positive, keep going and have unshakeable confidence in ourselves, the service we provide and the business we’re growing.

  • Too often Osteopaths will rely solely on word-of-mouth referrals to generate business and have no systems of data management in place to embrace technology, marketing and systemisation that will take your clinic to the next level.

  • Take consistent action to make sure that you achieve your goals. Plan to be an effective business owner in times of uncertainty with a robust organisational structure that can cope when changes happen.

  • Follow the mindset, market, manage and money model to success. With the right mindset, you can achieve anything and if you don’t have the right attitude towards running your business it can affect your market.

  • A robust marketing strategy, which consistently brings a flow of new patients is the lifeblood of your clinic and you must focus on creating improved operations and systems so that you save time by working smarter, not harder.

  • Increased patient numbers and a more efficient clinic will result in more money, less waste and more cash flow with a better fee structure that maximizes your profits as you scale.

BEST MOMENTS
“We've been living in very unreal times during the last two years.”

“By surviving through the pandemic you’ve demonstrated resilience and have continued to help your community with your services.”

“Review your service, systems and situation regularly to assess the choices you might have to grow your client.”

“There is a massive demand for osteopathy at the moment as people can’t get in to see GP’s.”

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • You can't grow and scale your business whilst you're busy whackamoling all day, it's exhausting and it’s not healthy because it can often lead to burnout.

  • Rather than running every aspect of your business yourself, you need to introduce processes and systems that can help to get your business organised so that you can spend your time seeing clients, not firefighting.

  • Invest in your business to make your processes more efficient. This is the only way in which you can scale your practice, see more patients and grow your team.

  • Don’t get caught whackamoling, working crazy hours and constantly dealing with problems with very little profit to show for it. An organised practice will run smoothly, and efficiently with a great patient journey and you’ll end up with more profit.

BEST MOMENTS
“Whackamolling in your business is exhausting.”

“We are helping more clinics than ever before all across the world and it's fantastic, but we hit a ceiling.”

“You cannot grow the business without starting to get much more systemised and organised and have everything as streamlined as it possible.”

“Don’t end up whackamoling your way through the week.”

9 key mistakes in osteopathic practices18 Jun 202200:28:07

Many clinics make mistakes that can lead to loss of profits, overwhelm and a drop off in patients. In this episode of The Osteobizness podcast, Gilly shares with you 9 key mistakes practices make and how you can avoid them.

Special Offer: During June you can join the Osteobiz Mastermind program to Recession Proof your clinic in just 90 days! For more information about this, message Gilly via social media or by

email: gilly@osteobiz.com

Clinic not working perfectly? Book a free chat with Gilly to find out how to fix it! bit.ly/osteobizchat

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Relying on word of mouth should not be your only way of generating business. Your marketing strategy should drive a steady amount of leads to your clinic with word of mouth and referral acting as the icing in the cake.

  • Marketing should be a key focus every week and your mission should be to educate and inform your community.

  • Many clinics are being run in a disjointed way which can lead to overwhelm. Systems and processes make your clinic work efficiently and improve the experience for the patient.

  • A key mistake clinic owners make is having an incorrect fee structure which can lead to a low income. Your fees need to be priced correctly and increase over time to represent the time and value you’re offering your patients.

  • Don’t ignore previous patients, they are valuable to you. You've done your marketing, you've increased your patient numbers and you’ve finished their treatments but that doesn’t mean your relationship ends there. They will come back and have more problems that you can solve, so stay in touch.

BEST MOMENTS

“Referrals are nirvana, they show your loyal patients recommending your services.”

“But beware; relying solely on referrals is putting the success of your clinic in other people's hands.”

“Marketing is a critical part of any business.”

“There are thousands more people all around you within touching distance that have no idea you exist.”

“Technology is all around us. It's improving and changing all the time.“

Clinic not working perfectly? Book a free chat with Gilly to find out how to fix it! bit.ly/osteobizchat

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Since the pandemic, people have struggled to see GPs which has seen a massive increase in demand for manual therapy.

  • You don't need to be fearful of a recession, there are always opportunities to be had during tough times, although you do need to focus on protecting your business and planning and strategising to block book clients in for treatment.

  • Do not reduce your prices at any point in the coming months. Keep your prices high and continue to increase them incrementally too, because otherwise, you're going to really feel the pinch on your profits.

  • To protect your clinic during a recession, ensure that everything is systemised and streamlined to make sure it is as time-efficient and profitable as possible.

BEST MOMENTS
“There’s a lot of competition in the manual therapy space and a lot of clinics are trying to expand.”

“With a potential recession looming we need to protect our businesses.”

“You're not in business to earn less year on year, you’re in it to earn more and to make sure you provide properly for your family.”

Overworked and Overwhelmed04 Jun 202201:00:57

Gilly is joined by the Founder of A Little Peace of Mind, Entrepreneur, Podcaster and Coach, Nicola Bird. They discuss how the pandemic has changed society, how to overcome anxiety and why remaining in a natural state can help your decision making and aid your clinic.

Clinic not working perfectly? Book a free chat with Gilly to find out how to fix it! bit.ly/osteobizchat

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • The osteopathic profession has a lot more anxiety and overwhelm in the community and among practitioners and patients. Often anxious patients rub off on the clinic and it can create a tough working environment.

  • The pandemic changed the way society operated and we all became scared due to the new pressure and stresses of COVID. Being scared and anxious became part of normal everyday life.

  • It’s important to make decisions about your business in your natural state and not when you’re stuck in a thought tangle. A thought tangle will revert back to a natural state over time but it’s essential to spot them when it happens when you become overwhelmed and your mind is screaming at you.

  • Don’t make decisions in an anxious state and let imposter syndrome take over. You need to learn to ignore yourself.

BEST MOMENTS
“My business hit seven figures and there was just an empty feeling.”

“I'd found peace of mind and the thing that I'd been searching for”

“People are scared, but they had no problem being scared. They were just scared and there’s a real difference.”

“Osteopathy is an art and you’re totally absorbed by it. It just flows through you naturally and you're not even aware of it.”

“If you don't know, you're drunk, you're in trouble. That's a great analogy.”

“If you understand what's going on, you can just ignore yourself.”

The Art of Delegation Part 228 May 202200:37:56

In part two of a new mini-series, Gilly and Osteopath and owner of a multi-disciplinary clinic, Jim Roddick to discuss the art of delegation. Discover how to offload the day-to-day tasks and increase your profits, learn how to focus on the strategy and culture you’re trying to build in your community and understand the power of delegation and how it can help you scale.

Clinic not working perfectly? Book a free chat with Gilly to find out how to fix it! bit.ly/osteobizchat

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Growing your business starts with getting rid of the day-to-day tasks. If you are bogged down there's just not enough time and there's no mental bandwidth for you to work on your business. There’s no time to grow it or plan to increase your profits or save more time.

  • By delegating tasks you’re able to focus on the strategy and culture you’re trying to create within your community of practitioners or within your clinic.

  • Having the people and resources to delegate to is the first step, delegating and making sure that your team is well-trained and experienced enough to achieve the tasks to the standard you set is the second step.

  • Delegation will allow you to scale your clinic faster. You're the soil of the plant and you need more people to create a grow plant because, without it, you're going to reach a size that it just can't grow anymore.”

BEST MOMENTS
“I’m the happiest in my clinic when everything is organised and delegated away.

“A large proportion of the operational day-to-day stuff drags down business owners.”

“Having your training resources all in one place and within a clinic handbook can help with training your team and keeping standards high.”

Common Communication Mistakes And How To Fix Them With Chris Chippendale21 May 202200:50:56

Gilly is joined by Doctor of Chiropractic and Clinical Director, Chris Chippendale in this episode of The Osteobizness podcast. Together they dive into the patient journey, how to manage expectations with treatment plans and why communication within clinics is essential to success.

Clinic not working perfectly? Book a free chat with Gilly to find out how to fix it! bit.ly/osteobizchat

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Communication with patients regarding their recommended treatment plan is so important. It’s essential that osteopaths communicate the expectations for a treatment plan and explain the how and the why for each visit so that the patient knows it’s coming from a place of care and wellbeing.

  • Education and awareness around the patient's care is vital as it’s their health that can be impacted so you need to break down the treatment you’re giving and give the patient confidence in why you’re doing it.

  • Insecurity, fears, hang-ups and worries can often get in the way of putting the patient first. Effective patient-centred care puts all of the doubt aside and serves the patient with the solution to their problem.

  • The social styles model is a simple framework for identifying the patient's preferred communication style based on outward behaviour. As an osteopath, you can use this method to serve and communicate with your patients in the way in which is most effective for them, which in turn improves their experience.

BEST MOMENTS
“There's a lot more overlap in the venn diagram than differences between chiropractors and osteopaths.”

“We're all learning from each other as the science advances as a rising tide lifts all boats.”

“I don't want to be one of those chiropractors or osteopaths that’s feared, it’s a stereotype.”

“There's so many things that we can spot as to ways they can improve their life, health and wellbeing.”

“Try not to overwhelm your patients at the start, aim to drip feed the education and build a rapport.”

“There's so many more variables that are outside of our control and you can't ever get to a point where you will fix everybody that produces some anxiety.”

The Art of Delegation14 May 202200:12:05

In part one of a new two-part mini-series, Gilly discusses the work of 2nd generation Osteopath and owner of a multi-disciplinary clinic, Jim Roddick. Learn how to master the art of delegation, get more done, increase your revenue and free up time in today’s episode of The Osteobizness podcast.

Clinic not working perfectly? Book a free chat with Gilly to find out how to fix it! bit.ly/osteobizchat

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • One of the most important things in running a clinic is delegation because as owners we want to control everything and we end up running out of time and in there lies overwhelm, exhaustion and burnout.

  • You are too valuable to your business to be doing small operational or unskilled day-to-day jobs when you could be seeing patients and using your skills to generate more revenue for your clinic.

  • Creating a clinic handbook will help to streamline your practice and produce standard operating procedures for each area of the business. A handbook will help you train up staff on tasks you were previously doing and will teach them the exact way you want it to be done so that you can spend more time seeing patients.

BEST MOMENTS
“Once we've got operations and marketing handled, we then move on to getting that clinic handbook done.”

“Find somebody who would do those tasks for a lot less than your value per hour.”

“You have to delegate and get some of that stuff off your desk and get someone else to do it either in the team or by paying someone external to do it.”

Delivering a Full Resolution30 Apr 202200:13:44

Let's talk about delivering real results! In today’s episode, Gilly explains the need for providing patients with a full resolution to their problems. Learn why you must offer a full treatment plan and get patients booked in for follow up treatments so that they do not leave with the perception of a poor osteopathy experience.

Clinic not working perfectly? Book a free chat with Gilly to find out how to fix it! bit.ly/osteobizchat

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Osteopaths need to provide patients with a full resolution to their problems, even if that means a number of treatments over a period of time. What you cannot do is give a partial resolution, not solve the problem and leave the patient in pain and with the perception that osteopathy doesn’t work.

  • Always give patients the option to book their next appointments so they can get the times that they prefer, that suit their diary and their schedule. Don't just give them a partial result.

  • This is private health care and people know that they need to pay for that so focus on the result and not the money.

BEST MOMENTS
“We've got one chance with a patient, you've got one chance to give them a result.”

“Give them a full result, deliver what you're capable of and keep talking to them.”

“People are prepared to pay for private health care that is high quality.”

Common Mistakes Clinics are Making16 Apr 202200:22:50

There are 5 common mistakes many Osteopaths make. In today’s show, Gilly talks you through why you need to keep in touch with your patients, addresses how you price your treatments and why you should make a potential patient's experience as seamless as possible.

Clinic not working perfectly? Book a free chat with Gilly to find out how to fix it! bit.ly/osteobizchat

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Not keeping in touch with patients. A newsletter now and again can engage with patients and keep them updated with your practice and maintain a rapport.

  • Check-in with your patient database. It’s important for your reputation that you ensure that every single patient gets the very best and receives the ongoing treatment that they need. It's good practice to get them back again and make sure they don't need a bit more treatment and reassurance and help them.

  • Create a proper treatment plan for every single patient. Show them the path ahead and the journey to better health.

  • Don’t be scared to raise your prices. Pricing is too often linked with our own self-worth but pricing correctly is very important to the growth of your practice and Osteopaths shouldn’t make assumptions about how patients will prioritise their life and how much they’re willing to pay for treatment.

BEST MOMENTS
“Keeping in touch and maintaining rapport means that next time they need treatment you’ll be top of mind.”

“Give them reassurance that they can achieve their end goal, whatever that might be.”

“Clinics now must offer an online booking option, it’s about making the journey easier for the patient.”

Marketing 101 - Does Marketing Push Your Buttons?09 Apr 202200:22:38

Does marketing push your buttons? In this episode of The Osteobizness podcast, Gilly breaks down her Marketing 101 approach to social media, connecting with your potential patients and building a community. Discover how to make the social media algorithms work for you, what to post and when to post it to get yourself known and build your brand.

Clinic not working perfectly? Book a free chat with Gilly to find out how to fix it! bit.ly/osteobizchat

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Most potential patients aren't seeing what you post because you’re not posting enough and, perhaps surprisingly, you can never post too much. It therefore goes without saying that if your potential patients don’t see your posts, they still don’t know who you are or how you can help them.
  • Social media algorithms, particularly Facebook, show your posts organically to around only 5% of your page followers, so by posting more you're certainly not being a pest as only a few people will be seeing it.
  • We have to attract the attention of your potential patients and build a community so don't be afraid to use humour or to be entertaining. It is social media and it’s about connection, relationships and sharing.

BEST MOMENTS
“Post more often than you feel comfortable with.”

“Use organic posts, don't pay Facebook any money.”

“Only a few people will see your posts organically, but it's still vital.”

“If you stop posting to your page, Facebook will think the page is dead and it's not going to show anything to your potential clients.”

Gilly and Gayle dive into the financial and strategic decisions you need to make in order to scale your practice and accelerate growth. Why taking a loan isn’t a bad thing and how building your team helps to build the foundation for growth.

Clinic not working perfectly? Book a free chat with Gilly to find out how to fix it! bit.ly/osteobizchat

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • One of the most common pitfalls business owners face is trying to take on everything themselves, but the challenge is ‘how do you manage to do everything when you've got limited resources?’ Far too often people focus on saving costs rather than the time aspect of doing that task themselves costs.

  • You must evaluate if certain tasks are worth your time or If they can be outsourced at a cost so that you can see more patients. Otherwise, you may be reducing your own turnover by not sticking to your primary skillset.

  • To scale your practice and accelerate the speed of growth sometimes it’s beneficial to take out a business loan when you factor in how long you want to run your practice. Depending on your goals, a financial loan could help you grow your client base quicker and provide you with more working capital as a result.

  • Building a team within your practice can actually save you money in the long run and you can build business relationships that become instrumental in helping you create a self-sustaining and profitable practice with happy patients generating you an income.

BEST MOMENTS
“You could be doing yourself out turnover and instead be increasing the number of patients you see.”

“There's always solutions to a lack of finances, it could be taking on a loan or finance so that you can get yourself a better footprint in terms of profitability quicker.”

“Before hiring, ask yourself does this role really add value to my business and can the money be earnt from the role?”

Community, Knowledge and Measuring Success with Elizabeth Curphey27 Mar 202200:52:46

How do you measure success in your practice? Gilly is joined by an experienced osteopath and owner of the founder of The Therapy Rooms, Elizabeth Curphey. Together they explore the value of sharing knowledge, how to serve your local community and how to measure success.

Clinic not working perfectly? Book a free chat with Gilly to find out how to fix it! bit.ly/osteobizchat

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Osteopaths know how to treat patients, they know how to practice but it's the business side of running your practice that can be really demanding. Osteopaths need to join communities, learn from each other and make mistakes so that they can grow as business owners.

  • How do you measure success? Understanding from the beginning that you need to set boundaries and determine how to will measure what a successful practice looks like is important to staying motivated and providing great customer service. Success means not comparing ourselves to others and not thinking your practice is better than another, success is different for every osteopathy.

  • Osteopaths provide a really important service to the community and people really value the knowledge that osteopaths have. It’s important to realise you’re not selling a service the community don’t need, it’s something every one of your patients is going to benefit from in more way than one.

BEST MOMENTS
“My vision was to have a multidisciplinary practice and at its peak, we had osteopaths, counsellors, therapists and nutritionists; my vision came to life.”

“This profession has given me such a lovely, wonderful and fulfilling life.”

“When people have tough experiences and they’re feeling demoralised about their practice I don't want them to feel alone.”

“We do our very best with every patient that comes through the door, but there may well be one or two in your weekly list that don’t quite get it.”

Gilly is joined by the principal osteopath and owner of Osteopathy For All, Pippa Cossens. Clinic not working perfectly? Book a free chat with Gilly to find out how to fix it! bit.ly/osteobizchat

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • As an Osteopath your passion is solving people's pain and therefore you stop worrying about the competition or other things that you cannot control and focus on serving your patients and growing your practice.

  • Patients will not fully recover from just a physical approach, a mind and body approach makes much more of a difference. Understanding why the muscles have got tight, why the nervous system is agitated and the new loop, the neural loop that comes from that can transform your practice.

  • Osteopaths are well-placed to help the health of the nation and during the pandemic, osteopaths have massively stepped up in helping their community and serving patients with chronic pain, overcoming fear and serving patients when often hospital appointments were hard to come by.

  • Osteopathy is about being truly authentic and resonating with anybody that walks into your practice. You have to be confident to be in your niche and focus on your passion to help people.

BEST MOMENTS
“If you build up your reputation in your local area people will travel further to come and see you because of the quality of the work that you do.”

“Word of mouth and social media can br an amazing force for growing your practice”

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • If you’re a first-time parent there will understandably be some anxiety about the baby's development and how their progressing.

  • Due to a lack of home visits and support from the NHS, often midwives are only able to support new parents via phone calls. This can be stressful for the new mum and leave them vulnerable as they’re seeking advice and guidance on how to feed, soothe and hold their newborn.

  • New parents may not have all of the right information they need to support and understand their newborn. Osteopaths and other healthcare professionals can share their knowledge of baby development and share key fundamentals to put new parents' minds at risk with things such as feeding and growth.

  • There are many reasons that can cause a newborn baby not to thrive and it’s important to recognise them and seek support but also realise that as a new parent you’re not a failure.

  • COVID-19 and the access to healthcare, as a result, has had a huge impact on the well-being and mental health of new parents.

BEST MOMENTS
“A lack of support leaves new parents feeling very vulnerable.”
“There’s a lot of expectations put on new mums who may not have a support network around them”

“If a newborn is not thriving it’s important to remember you’re not a failure as a parent”

“Just by knowing how many feeds a baby needs in 24 hours, Osteopaths can help new parents.”

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Integrating systems in your business that will save you time is the number one thing you can do to stay in love with your business because inefficiencies in the way a practice operates, directly creates even more stress and overwhelm.

  • Clinics can fail to succeed because of one fundamental issue and that’s what’s going on in the owner's head. Often something is holding them back such as long-held beliefs or negative self-talk and they’re unable to grow, unable to modernise existing systems and it can halt the clinic's progression.

  • Focus on shifting your efforts towards the patient and creating a gold-standard patient journey. Financial independence with Philippa Scobie20 Feb 202200:42:08

In today’s episode of the Osteobiz podcast, Gilly is joined by the founder of Financial Foundations and business consultant, coach and advisor Philippa Scobie. Together they explore the importance of financial accountability in your practice, why you need to set two-week deadlines for your finances and break down the profit-first mindset.

Clinic not working perfectly? Book a free chat with Gilly to find out how to fix it! bit.ly/osteobizchat

Interested in working with Philippa on your practice finances? Contact  info@ffcoaching.co.uk for more information.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • The profit-first mindset is focused on removing your profit from your sales first. Take 5% profits and separate it into another account to be your quarterly dividend. You are an investor in your business and you should be rewarded for that.

  • Often clinic owners are not tax-efficient and don’t have a structure in place for their own salary to meet their lifestyle. 50% of sales should be set aside for the practice owners personal account.

  • Expenses and overheads should account for no more than 30% of your turnover. Practice owners should prioritise expenses that have a positive return on investment. Overheads can be reduced when you analyse what you’re paying out each month.

  • A positive financial foundation is about being accountable and sticking to two-week deadlines.

BEST MOMENTS
“You need to take a forward view of financial planning and take learnings from past years”

“Staying on top of finances can be the most important part of a business”

“You should never be the lowest-paid employee in your practice”

“If you want to grow your practice, you need to know about the financials”

Diana Rowlands Explains Why Blog Posts are a Website Essential13 Feb 202200:35:11

Gilly is joined by ex-Osteopath and expert blog writer Diana Rowlands. Together they discuss the power of writing, how to design a best-in-class website to represent your practice and grow your business and why it’s essential to showcase your expertise and remain patient-focused at all times.

Clinic not working perfectly? Book a free chat with Gilly to find out how to fix it! bit.ly/osteobizchat

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • It is painful writing blog posts when you're trying to run your business and your focus is elsewhere. I ease, the pain of osteopaths having to write their own blog as often they don't want to or don’t have enough time.
  • The benefits of adding a blog to your clinic's website are huge. It really gets you and your work noticed, it helps to build your brand and it gives you a voice to connect with the community. The best way to grow your practice is for people to be able to come and look at your website, demonstrate that you’re helpful and provide a solution to their problem in a trustworthy manner.
  • Blogs shouldn’t be harsh or salesy, it doesn’t fit with Google and your traffic will bounce. Blogs need to build trust and help you come across in a friendly and authentic way.
  • A simple five-page website template design gets straight to the point and can be easily focused on the potential patient. You don’t need a massive website where the user can get lost, it needs to be relevant, serve what people are searching for and written in an easy to understand terminology that people can understand.

BEST MOMENTS
“Having the right voice is key to the people that you're trying to serve because when people are searching for a solution, they're searching for something on their own, in their own language”

“A website needs to be patient-focused and there must be a shop window into how that potential patient might come through the door.”

“A block page is great for displaying blogs and especially in osteopathy we often talk about therapeutic relationships and people.”

“What is your best business tip for? Showcase your expertise.”

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • When you run your own clinic you have the expressive freedom and creation to do amazing things. You’re able to choose your own path and to be completely adaptable to problems that arise on a daily basis.

  • Most people misunderstand the perception of stress. Stress is a situation you cannot control whereas it’s likely you’re just facing a challenge that you can overcome. The bigger your practice grows the more challenges you will face and situations you will need to adapt to.

  • Osteopaths need to move more into prescribing exercises because it's an evidence-based science that helps to empower people and the patient is actually involved in their active recovery.

  • So many Osteopaths have bottlenecks, they're spreading themselves too thin in their business and they're struggling to see results. Systems, operations and the accountability of joining a community can help to motivate Osteopaths to grow their businesses and solve their problems.

BEST MOMENTS

“The entrepreneurial brain is always looking for solutions in every aspect of life.”

“For small businesses, it’s very hard to have a set plan and strategy because there are lots of things that cannot be planned for. You’ve got to be smart and adaptable.”

“Due to the pandemic it's a constant adaption to the ever-changing situation we're currently in.”

“Stress is when you have no control of the situation you just have to try and adapt to it.”

“It’s time that osteopathy started to be a bit more profitable.”

“Every time we treat someone, that promotes osteopathy and we encourage the public to try it.”

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What’s the best opportunity for growth? Smaller clinics are able to keep their costs low and grow steadily as it’s a much smaller operation but bigger practices can grow rapidly if they have the right systems in place and make every room earn its money. When you grow a practice you’re able to work on your business and not just in it.

  • You have to make it easy for patients to find you and solve their pain. Digital online booking systems allow your practice to remain patient-centric whilst increasing efficiency. Everyone is time poor so you need to make the customer journey as quick, easy, simple and effective is essential to growing and scaling your clinic.

  • Marketing your clinic's services is key to growth and by utilising social media you are magnifying the effects of positive word of mouth referrals and building your brand awareness at the same time.

BEST MOMENTS
“There’s high demand for osteopathy and manual therapy because people can't get help from the NHS.”

“You shouldn't always be working in the business you need to set aside time to work on the business otherwise you’ll never grow sufficiently”

“When you grow your clinic to a certain level you need to outsource the £10 tasks that can be time-consuming”

“Take a step back and take a helicopter view of your business, rather than looking at it from ground level”

“The quickest way to reach your new patients is on social media.”

“Clinic reviews and testimonials are so important to build confidence in your potential patient.”

  • Practitioners need to be experts in what they do and provide a world-class services. This foundation needs to be set before Osteopaths can focus on the business side of things and grow their teams.

  • Often a principle of a practice is getting caught up in the daily grind of trying to firefight and keep on top of everything without thinking about what you really should be doing.  Being a small business owner is 24/7 and you never really get away from it. But it is very fulfilling.

  • The key foundations for a practice are really important if you’re to grow from a small to medium to large business. You need to run an efficient operation, have processes in place to onboard new staff, understand how to engage and educate your target audience whilst also asking for feedback from clients in order for you to grow.

  • To grow, you go from foundations to building on top of them to building a team and to creating a community. As a result you create leverage and your practice is more efficient with staff members that know their jobs and a team that will allow you to work on your business and not stuck firefighting.

  • In order to provide the best service you need your practice to generate cashflow and in order to do that, you have to have a business hat on rather than an Osteopath's hat on.

  • Unfortunately there are lots of very good practices and principals who are working really hard but not getting the gains that they need to grow. To make the business flourish you have to direct all of your energy into mapping out and understanding what you’re currently doing and how you can improve on the areas of your business that will bring you more clients.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • When you think of selling something to somebody you need to have the mindset that you’re actually aiming to inform and educate them to make the right decision. So growing your practice is about encouraging patients to book in and you’re just showing them how to do it so they know when it comes to the time that they may require treatment.
  • Cliniko can help you set business goals on a daily basis, monitor them and help you track how many patients you saw this week vs last week, future bookings and determine your income and outgoings.
  • Osteopathy is working out the puzzle behind their story and finding solutions with tailored treatment. The goal is to remove those roadblocks and restrictions to what has created the symptoms.
  • What's your best business tip? Online bookings. Simply put, online bookings can turn everything around and give you the systems and automation to be able to take bookings 24/7 whilst freeing up your time to work with your patients.
  • What would you say is your greatest achievement? Believing in my instinct about osteopathy, opening a practice and the doors to new adventures.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Mindset is crucial for the successful running of practice operations and for delivering excellent service and follow-up for patients. A strong mindset delivers well-thought-out decisions rather and positive and proactive reactions to problems.
  • Managing and having clarity of thought and understanding of your goals makes managing your team much easier. When everyone is on board with the business development plan, it makes it easier to achieve those goals.
  • There are many business models that you can deploy to create a successful and profitable practice but it’s about getting the balance right between outgoings and income.
  • Marketing is the oil, which keeps the clinic engine busy, productive and working. You need to continuously educate and inform your community about what you do and why it’s beneficial.
  • Mixing up money and self-worth brings us full circle to mindset. Knowing what we're worth means that we avoid being busy, knackered, and broke. So it’s important to set your fees that represent your worth as well as having a contingency fund as a cash cushion.
