Want to make your own botanical fruit tree spray? Here’s a recipe to try. While this spray is all-natural, it can harm beneficial insects like bees, so be sure to spray at a time when bees aren’t active (early morning and late evening). Keep an eye out for bird nests and avoid spraying near them. And remember, you wouldn’t want to get this in your eyes or on your skin, so handle it with care!

Garlic Fruit Tree Spray

Garlic is known for its strong scent, which can deter many types of pests, from aphids to caterpillars and even some types of fungi.

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound of garlic
  • 1 gallon of water (rainwater is best)

Instructions:

  1. Peel and Mince: Start by peeling the garlic cloves. Then, mince or finely chop them to release the essential oils. The finer, the better.
  2. Simmer: Combine the minced garlic with water in a large pot. Bring the mixture to a simmer (not a full boil) and let it cook for about 20 minutes. This process infuses the water with garlic's active compounds.
  3. Cool and Strain: After simmering, take the pot off the heat and let it cool. Once it's cool, strain the mixture to remove the garlic pieces. A cheesecloth or a fine mesh strainer works great for this. You want the liquid as clear as possible to prevent any sprayer clogs.
  4. Dilute (Optional): Depending on what you're dealing with, you might want to dilute the mixture. A common approach is to dilute the concentrated garlic water with more water. This step is adjustable based on your needs and the sensitivity of your plants.
  5. Bottle Up: Pour the strained, cooled liquid into a spray bottle or a larger sprayer for application. It’s ready to use!
  6. Apply: Spray it on the leaves of your fruit trees, covering both the tops and undersides where pests like to hide. Early morning or late afternoon is the best time to apply, avoiding the hot midday sun to reduce the risk of burning the leaves.

Tips:

  • Storage: You can store the garlic spray in the refrigerator for up to a week. For longer storage, freeze it in an ice cube tray and thaw cubes as needed.
  • Test: Always test the spray on a small area of the plant first to ensure it doesn't react badly.
  • Reapply: After rain or watering, you might need to reapply, as it can wash off.
Bury Your Briefs to Evaluate Soil Microbes with Cameron Ogilvie and Kari Dunfield25 May 202100:42:53

Soil microbes play an essential role in releasing nutrients from the soil in a form that our fruit trees and other plants can access. So, if your soil doesn't have a healthy and diverse microbe population, your fruit trees will not thrive. The problem is that microbes are so tiny that we can't see them with the human eye.

How do we know if we have a good microbe population? According to the Soil Conservation Council of Canada all you have to do is bury a pair of 100% cotton underwear in the topsoil of your garden. Leave your undies in the ground for a couple of months. Then, when you dig them up see what they look like. If your soil microbes have been busy digesting and recycling organic matter, then all that will be left is the elastic waist band.

To learn more about this process, I've invited two experts from the University of Guelph to talk about the "Bury Your Briefs Campaign" and about the role soil microbes play in keeping our fruit trees and other plants healthy. They are Cameron Ogilvie, Knowledge Mobilization Coordinator and Kari Dunfield, Canada Research Chair in Environmental Microbiology of Agro-ecosystems.

Native Apple Trees with Paul Kron22 Dec 202000:37:36

Most apple trees that we grow in our gardens and orchards are not native to North America. DNA tells us that these trees originate in the mountains of Kazakhstan in Central Asia. But there are some crabapple trees that are native to North America. In this episode we talk to Paul Kron, Research Associate at the Plant Population and Evolution Research Lab at the University of Guelph about native apple trees.

Click here to watch a 9-minute video segment from the hour-long podcast to learn the history of apple trees, how feral apple trees differ from native ones, and to learn the mystery around Malus coronaria's reproduction.

MORE INFORMATION:

  • Most of the Husband lab research on Malus coronaria has taken place at rare Charitable Research Reserve in Cambridge, Ontario (https://raresites.org/). Rare is an excellent spot to see Malus coronaria trees in a publicly accessible area.
  • Paul's lab offers apple identification services to homeowners who want to identify the variety of an old apple tree near them.

How to Prune Old Fruit Trees with Bob Lever22 Oct 202000:40:57

Old fruit trees may be hollow but they can still produce fantastic fruit and they provide invaluable habitat to wildlife, sometimes for very unique and specific species.
In this radio show learn how to prune old apple trees and how to care for them with UK-based orchard educator Bob Lever.

"If you want to make a veteran tree for the future, you need to choose a nice vigorous variety that you know is capable of being long lived and put it on a nice vigorous rootstock. That is how we will get the veteran trees for the next hundred years." -Bob Lever

"While I can't transplant an old tree to my park right now, what I can do is do something for people in a hundred years time." -Susan Poizner

Growing Fruit Trees in Extreme Climates with Greg Peterson22 Sep 202001:03:13

Growing fruit trees can be very difficult in extreme climates and no one would understand that better than Greg Peterson of UrbanFarm.org, who grows his fruit trees in Phoenix, Arizona. There, the summer temperatures can soar above 100 degrees F.  Greg also sells over 5,000 fruit trees a year to residents of the Greater Phoenix Area and he educates the public about fruit tree care to ensure that their fruit tree growing experiences will be a success.

This month's recommended resource was Tom Robert's book "100% Natural Organic Pest Control for Home and Garden".
