Kiril Sokoloff - Lessons From One Of The Greatest Investors Of Our Time18 Aug 202201:09:04

This week I have the great honor of welcoming the distinguished investor Kiril Sokoloff, CEO & Founder of 13D which he started back in 1983.

Kiril is an original thinker who has achieved phenomenal success over his decades of investing, often by going against the consensus. He is also a big advocate of thematic investing and has said “Over the last 40 years I don’t think we missed a single major technological transformation”.

In the late 1970s, he correctly anticipated an inflationary blow-off due to the fall of the Shah in Iran. In the early 1980s, he foresaw a period of disinflation and an ensuing takeover boom that nobody was prepared for. His firm became the expert in 13D filings and between 1983 and 1986, 175 of his firm’s recommendations were taken over. He then understood the great opportunity China in 1992 represented and co-founded the first pure Asian hedge fund during a period when the Hang Seng rose from 4900 to 12000. This was followed among over achievements by investing in internet and e-commerce companies in the 90s pre dot com crash and Oil in 2002 when it was only $20 dollars, riding the trend to over $140 at its peak in June 2008.

In this interview, we discuss the current macro environment and the intricacies of his investment strategy including theories on Anomalies and Contagion plus the implications of the new world order and rethinking supply chains.

This is one of my favorite interviews. Kiril is one of the few great investors of our time.

Chris Camillo - Turning $20k Into $30 Million | Re-post01 Sep 202200:53:48

Get Opto’s best content every day, by subscribing to our FREE Newsletter: www.cmcmarkets.com/en/opto/newsletter

Today we revisit one of our most popular interviews to date.
In October 2020 we spoke to Chris Camillo, Founder of Dumb Money and an investor that had turned $20k into over $30 million.

Having led and founded a series of successful tech and software companies, in 2018 Chris - and his two friends Dave Hanson and Jordan McLain - gave up their day job to invest their own money, full-time. Not only have they already recorded extraordinary success, but Chris and co. have also pioneered a unique investment strategy, or what they call ‘Social Arbitrage’.

Chris hasn’t stopped there, Dumb Money have chronicled every high - and low - on their eponymous YouTube channel, now a mainstay among individual investors. The channel had 52,000 subscribers when we last spoke, now their audience is more than double that size.

Chris gives us a real insight into his strategy, but not only that, he highlights several burgeoning trends that on reflection almost 2 years later, prove to be prescient investment calls. Enjoy!

Edwin Dorsey - Shorting Bad Businesses, Investigating Care.com & Dorsey the ‘Anti-Zuckerberg’16 Dec 202101:02:02

Edwin Dorsey is Founder of The Bear Cave, a short-focused newsletter that investigates and uncovers ‘Bad businesses’.

Edwin’s passion for investing began in third grade, and when his grandmother funded an E-Trade account for him whilst still in elementary school, he was hooked. Whilst at Stanford, Dorsey shone a spotlight on the nefarious Care.com, having instigated an international investigation, that culminated with a Wallstreet Journal front page, a C-suite overhaul, and IAC’s ultimate acquisition of Care.com in early 2020.

Edwin relives that story and many more like it, including the equally awe-inspiring tale of Root Insurance’s unsavoury practices, and subsequent demise. We discuss how to identify these bad businesses and what red flags investors can look out for, before concluding by talking Twitter, and Edwin’s super-fandom of both Dorsey and the company’s monetisation potential. Enjoy!

Gil Baumgarten is President & CEO of Segment Wealth Management, a 36-year veteran of the securities and investment industry.

After 25 years on Wall Street, Gil had grown tired of brokerages routinely putting their own interests above those of the client. Gil lifts the lid on the nefarious practice’s endemic amongst these Wall Street institutions, before taking us through the diametrically opposed investment approach, employed at Segment.

Gil identifies the most common mistakes made by individual investors, before explaining the power of unrealized gains. And to finish, Gil describes Segment’s ETF investment strategy, demonstrating how their Core and Satellite positions complement each other, to form a robust, diversified portfolio. Enjoy!

Ali Urman - ARK Invest, DNA Sequencing & the Genomic Revolution11 Nov 202101:01:35

Ali Urman is ARK Invest’s Genomic Revolution analyst, responsible for the company’s research on Gene editing, DNA sequencing, Stem cell technologies & Immunotherapy. As of September 2021, ARK’s AUM stood at a colossal $42.4 billion, spearheaded by investing legend and household name, Cathie Wood. To speak to ARK’s Genomics analyst as a global pandemic thrusts Biotechnology into the spotlight was a huge privilege.

And Ali doesn’t disappoint. We discuss the Genomic revolution – how the sequencing of the first human genome cost $1bn and took 13 years, whereas today, that same process costs anywhere between $100-$1000, and takes just 1-2 days. Ali explains the transformative convergence of Next-generation DNA sequencing, Artificial Intelligence & CRISPR gene editing before we break down exactly how ARK picks their Genomics stocks! Lyn Alden - Network effects, Bitcoin & Finding Quality, Undervalued Stocks01 Apr 202101:05:11

On Friday 19th March I spoke to Lyn Alden, founder of Lyn Alden Investment Strategy. Jeff Ross - The Opportunity in Bitcoin & The 'FILMS' Equity Model18 Feb 202101:00:12

This week we’ve got Dr Jeff Ross who is both a radiologist and the founder of a successful hedge fund Vailshire Capital Management which utilises an innovative “all-weather,” full-cycle portfolio management strategy for its clients. Achieving triple digit returns over the past year.

In this interview however we dive into something both Jeff & I have an interest in, Bitcoin. We go from the basics, why does Bitcoin have value, to the opportunity and risks ahead in this market environment including analysing the future performance of stocks vs Bitcoin and any impact from potential rising rates further down the line.

We finish up by discussing hias films criteria for selecting equities which is not dissimilar to a VC investing strategy for later stage startups.

Jeff has some really interesting insights and above all it’s very topical for today's markets.

Steve Hanke is a professor of applied economics at The Johns Hopkins University and senior fellow at the Cato Institute. Hanke takes us on a fascinating journey through post-war politics and economic policy, not forgetting to explain the current landscape, just a week after Biden’s inauguration and days after Janet Yellen’s appointment as US Treasury Secretary. Hanke also allows me to tie his more macro insights back to global equity markets, speculating on where they’re likely to head in what promises to be an eventful 2021. Enjoy the episode!

Denny Fish - A $5.4 Billion Fund, The Inflection Election & Favourite Tech Innovators22 Oct 202001:05:55

This week I spoke to Denny Fish, Portfolio Manager at Janus Henderson, an asset manager responsible for £272.5 billion of client money. Denny manages Janus's Global Technology and Innovation strategy, a position he’s held since January 2016, and combines those duties with his role as Head of the firm’s Technology Sector Research Team. Denny's fascination for Tech stretches back to his time in Palo Alto, having worked for cloud giant Oracle in the late 90s.

I ask Denny where Tech stocks are headed next, with the market zeitgeist turning towards cyclicals. We speak about the innovative companies that make it into a fund that’s returned nearly 50% in the past 12 months, and Denny finishes by highlighting his favourite tech innovations that are yet to make it into the public consciousness. Chris Camillo - Turning $20k Into $30 Million01 Oct 202000:53:16

Today I’m talking to Chris Camillo, Founder of Dumb Money and an investor that’s turned $20k into over $30 million, and counting.

Having led and founded a series of successful tech and software companies, in 2018 Chris - and his two friends Dave Hanson and Jordan McLain - gave up the day-job to invest their own money, full-time. Not only have they already recorded extraordinary success, Chris and co. have pioneered a unique investment strategy, or what they call ‘Social Arbitrage’.

Chris gives us real insight into his strategy, but not only that, he identifies the advantages enjoyed by those managing their own investment portfolios, up against the financial might of institutional money managers – a breath of fresh air. Enjoy the episode!

Kathryn McDonald - An ESG Chief on Sustainable Funds' $71 Billion Boom10 Sep 202000:49:40

Today, I’m welcoming Kathryn McDonald to the Opto Sessions podcast, Co-Founder of Radiant ESG. Earlier this year Kathryn and Radiant CEO Heidi Ridley left renowned Quant House, Rosenberg Equities - The ‘Original Quant’ if you read Rosenberg’s website. The duo had decided to take the ESG integration synonymous with their former employer, one step further.

I speak to Kathryn about why, with global inflows into sustainable funds up 72% in Q2 2020, ESG is booming right now. We then discuss how Kathryn and Co. have captured this global zeitgeist, in Radiant’s product offering, with two new strategies primed for imminent market release.

Kathryn’s commitment to what we now call Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) investing began over 30 years ago, and I learnt a lot about a sector that added $71 billion in the second quarter of this year. Kathryn identifies the themes she thinks will lend further intrigue to an industry on the lips of market commentators all over the world, and I hope you find the interview as valuable as I did. Enjoy!

Perth Tolle - Emerging Markets: How to Invest in Freedom & Why That Excludes China03 Sep 202000:33:55

Today I was hugely lucky to speak to Perth Tolle, founder of Life + Liberty Indexes. First of all, Perth spoke to us from Houston, Texas, an area recently hit by Hurricane Laura. Luckily, Houston avoided any severe impact, but unfortunately, the weather did play havoc with Perth’s internet connection, which does mean some of the interview’s audio isn’t quite as clear as usual. But, after a herculean effort from our editors, I really hope you enjoy the episode.

And for a quick introduction, having worked as a private banker for one of the biggest asset managers in the world, Fidelity Investments, 10 years later Perth decided to found her own firm in 2014. Life & Liberty indexes is a purveyor of indices & ETFs designed to produce long-term outperformance in emerging markets while observing the freedom and human rights of the subjects within those nations. Frequently quoted throughout financial media, including numerous Bloomberg interviews, Perth was named one of the Ten to Watch in 2020 by Wealth Management Magazine.

If you’re serious about the impact your investments have on the world, this isn’t one to miss.

During the call, Perth mentions an article by colleague Jin Won Choi that busts the myth of Chinese outperformance in EM funds and indices, here it is:

Russ Mould - Is the 'Great Rotation' Finally Here? Stocks to Watch in a New Market Cycle13 Aug 202000:46:43

Today I’m talking to Russ Mould, a prolific market pundit and Investment Research Director at AJ Bell, one of the UK’s largest investment platforms with £54.3 billion of invested assets. Russ’s extensive experience in capital markets began in 1991, managing funds at Scottish Equitable, before being entrusted with UBS’s Tech coverage as an Equity analyst, two year later. 12 years on Russ decided he needed a change, becoming a writer, then Editor, at the renowned Shares Magazine - and once that was acquired by AJ Bell in 2014, Russ was chosen to head up the company’s investment research efforts, a role he performs to this day.

We discuss whether the ‘Great Rotation’ is finally here, what that means for investors’ portfolios, and where to find outperformance in a new market cycle, and in the new normal. Russ identifies the sectors, industries and companies that have shone amid unprecedented uncertainty, and which are likely to be at the vanguard of the next cycle.

Russ is consistently asked to contribute to Bloomberg, This is MONEY, CNBC and many other top publications besides, and it was a joy to have him on the podcast. Enjoy the episode!

Tony Greer - 'The Great Rotation': Exiting Technology & Buying Hard Assets02 Jun 202200:56:13

Tony Greer is the founder of TG Macro, an independent research firm that provides thought-provoking, insightful market analysis to institutional and retail clients alike.

Tony has been trading for 30 years, initially at Sumitomo bank in 1992, as the Quantum fund bet against the Bank of England, before really honing his craft at Goldman Sachs, after a 2-year spell at UBS from 1995.

We discuss ‘The Great Rotation’, a term coined by Tony to define the fundamental pivot away from big technology stocks, the darlings of investor portfolios for the past decade, into hard assets. Tony identifies the tailwinds bolstering the long-term performance of natural gas, oil, and commodities – a trend he expects is very much here to stay. Enjoy!

Fahmi Quadir - The 29-Year-Old Short Seller That Brought a $90 Billion Company to its Knees19 Jun 202000:59:15

Five years on from a now legendary short of Valeant Pharmaceuticals, a bet that brought a $90 billion company to its knees - and which has since been documented in the critically acclaimed Netflix series, Dirty Money - I’m catching up with Fahmi Quadir, the 29 year-old short-seller shaking up Wall Street. 2020 brings with it a new foe, Wirecard, a German payments company currently embroiled in a market manipulation probe, and one that’s been firmly in Quadir’s crosshairs since the start of 2018.

I ask how Fahmi identifies these high-conviction bets; how she battles discrimination in an industry marred by inequality; and which fraudulent, unethical business is next on her hit list.

Jens Nordvig is Founder & CEO of Exante Data and MarketReader. An alumnus of Goldman Sachs, Bridgewater Associates, and Nomura, we dig into Jens’ career to understand the world-renowned culture at Ray Dalio’s Bridgewater, and how those experiences have informed his unique investment approach.

Today’s focus is Japan, as the country’s finance minister warns Japan’s finances have become increasingly precarious, to an almost “unprecedented degree”, we first look back, to understand how the world’s third-largest economy has amassed the heaviest debt burden in the industrialised world.

Next, Jens’ covers Japan’s monetary policy, commenting on a historic move last December, and the BOJ’s decision to maintain the policy balance rate last week. Our focus on Japan ends with an explanation of the ripple effect this situation is having on equity and currency markets around the world.
We finish with Jens’ ‘next big idea’, an underreported economic trend he reckons listeners should keep a close eye on, in 2023.
