| Heart Surgery to Himalayan Heights: A Mountaineer's Inspirational Journey | 17 Sep 2024 | 01:01:33 | |
#67 Inspired by Warren Zevon’s philosophy to "enjoy every sandwich," Billy Haas walked on the treadmill for hours, eating sandwiches post open-heart surgery in order to cope with depression and the reality that his world had changed in an instant. In this episode, Billy shares about how drinking too much coffee on Denali led to a dual diagnosis of Septal Defect and Partial Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Return resulting in open-heart surgery instead of a trip to Pakistan. A year later, he began to experience Severe Vena Cava Occlusion leading to the placement of a stent. Billy walks us through how this major health challenge offered him a fresh lens to view success and failure. Ultimately, Billy successfully navigated his path to physical and emotional wellness and got to go on that trip to Pakistan. Bravo Billy. | Why Heart Patients Must Monitor Symptoms and Be ER Ready: Critical Insights | 03 Sep 2024 | 00:50:36
Hey Heart Buddies! Oooooo today's episode is another episode I needed when I was starting my heart journey. I interview Jennifer Johnson, an ER nurse, who dishes on all the things our doctors aren't going to tell us heart patients... at least I haven't had one tell me all that Jenn shares in this episode. She emphasizes the importance of being proactive about health, grieving, and understanding women's unique heart attack symptoms. The discussion covers practical tips for heart patients, including keeping a detailed symptom journal, bringing medication lists to the ER, and financial assistance for medications. They highlight the significance of humor, intuition, and having an advocate in healthcare settings. The episode underscores the value of early intervention and proactive care to prevent severe cardiac events and complications. Subscribe to join the supportive heart patient community on Patreon. Find Jenn's books here30 Days: A Symptom Tracker for Heart Patients: Johnson RN, Jennifer A: Amazon.com: Books TheIntuitiveNurse - Etsy Canada About Jennifer JohnsonHi, I’m Jennifer Johnson, and I am a wife, mother of two, and a Registered Nurse in Ontario, Canada. I have spent the last sixteen years of my career in the emergency room of big and small hospitals all over Northern and Southern Ontario. I have personally been a part of all the heartbreak, drama, bullying, life to death moments, and then also trying to cope in the ER during an ongoing pandemic. My books are my rally cry to all the other nurses struggling through this pandemic and finding that they are losing their love of nursing. They (as well as I) are burnt out and depressed and feeling hopeless. The love, caring, and camaraderie of nursing have changed for all of us, and the expectation that we continue to show up to a job that puts our lives on the line is new to us, and we are not doing well. I wanted to put this book out there to let nurses know they are not alone. Bringing back the love of nursing is possible. Now more than ever, we need to support and help raise each other. | From Triple Bypass to 70.3 half Ironman in One Year | 30 Jul 2024 | 00:33:04
#61 Despite leading a healthy lifestyle, John Spilman required a triple bypass due to severe blockages. He describes warning signs like fatigue and shortness of breath that led to lifesaving surgery. John's recovery included challenges like Afib, but through cardiac rehab and determination, he completed a half Ironman just a year later. His experience emphasizes being your own health advocate and finding support in the heart patient community. John's inspiring journey offers hope to others facing major health obstacles. More about John Spilman: I've been in endurance sports for over 25 years, participating in over 35 marathons, 15 half Ironman triathlons, and 6 full Ironmans. My routine involved early workouts, a full day of work in corporate strategy, and family time. In July 2023, I learned I had severe blockages requiring a triple bypass. Despite being a vegan and monitoring my health, my heart struggled with >90% blocked arteries. Signs of fatigue and shortness of breath led to necessary tests and surgery. The surgery was successful, and I quickly started recovery. I faced challenges like AFIB but continued to push forward. Cardiac rehab and personal workouts helped me regain strength. By July, nearly a year after surgery, I completed a 70.3 half Ironman. My experience taught me the importance of being your own advocate and focusing on recovery. Listen to your body and keep moving forward every day. | The Hidden Power of the Brain: The Impact of Pain On Healing | 21 May 2024 | 00:41:54
**Alert! The name of this podcast is changing on June 4th! Be sure to subscribe so you don't miss the announcement. Be sure to subscribe to the newsletter!** Pain is real. Ignore it at your own peril. Think of it as your check engine light. While pain is not a good parameter for how much damage has happened, it does play a role in helping you assess how dangerous the situation is. Boots Knighton and her physical therapist, Ann Alton, take you through a 40-minute lesson on pain, the brain's role in pain perception and recovery. They compare different types of pain, from broken legs to open-heart surgery, emphasizing the brain's influence and the importance of context. Ann shares her journey from chronic pain to becoming a pain neuroscience expert. They discuss the importance of clear medical explanations, the impact of emotional scars, and the brain's ability to rewire for healing. Ann highlights the need for patient-provider teamwork and in order to address healthcare biases. Ann also walks us through how pain involves the whole body and all systems. Nociception is the perception of pain. Areas of the brain used to determine pain are: sensory cortex, somatosensory cortex, anterior cingulate cortex, insular cortex, prefrontal, visual, thalamus, cerebellum, and premotor motor. Big thanks to Ann Alton for spending time with Boots today and in the clinic to help her navigate healing from a tib/fib spiral fracture! 00:00 Experiencing chronic pain led to becoming a physical therapist, inspired by pain neuroscience. 03:58 Pain is an alarm system, not a measure of damage. 09:30 Pain perception is based on context and prior experience. 11:36 Chronic body issues trigger brain's perceived danger, intervention options. 13:52 Pain perception is subjective; varies based on individual experience and expectations. 18:10 Extra nerve endings and inflammation signal danger to brain, causing concern and irritation. 22:44 Bias in medical system affects care for diverse patients. Research based on white men overlooks differences in care needs. 26:24 Practitioners struggle to keep up with new information and must learn independently. 29:57 Our brain helps us evaluate and visualize situations for appropriate action and memory recall. 34:01 Understanding and clarity bring relief. 35:19 Seek help for understanding medical information, simplify explanations. | Why Diet Culture is Bad for Your Heart and Your Mental Health | 07 May 2024 | 00:49:20
**Alert! The name of this podcast is changing on June 4th! Be sure to subscribe so you don't miss the announcement. Be sure to subscribe to the newsletter!** In this impactful episode of The Heart Chamber Podcast, hosts Eden Morris and Boots Knighton delve into critical heart health issues. They discuss the stark effects of diet culture on heart health, emphasize the importance of tailored nutrition for heart patients, and explore the emotional challenges post-surgery. Eden, a dietitian, shares her personal struggle with sports-related energy deficiency and underscores the need to advocate for comprehensive care in the medical field. They introduce listeners to intuitive eating, emphasizing body respect and mental well-being. This episode provides essential insights into overcoming heart health challenges and embracing a supportive approach to nutrition and body image. Tune in to learn how to nurture your heart and mind. A Little More About Today's GuestEden Morris is a Registered Dietitian (RD), Licensed Dietitian (LD), and Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor based in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. She is a former collegiate softball player turned mountain biker/skier who decided to become an RD after her diagnosis and experiences with Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (REDs). She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Texas A&M University and combined it with a Master’s of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics through the Coordinated Program at Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia. Eden internalized so many of diet culture’s messages as a teenage girl and young woman, and she hit diet rock bottom hard at the end of her collegiate athletic career. 3 stress fractures in her left foot, osteopenia, secondary amenorrhea for 3+ years, and a wrecked relationship with her respective sport were the wake-up calls that finally snapped her out of the diet mentality. She realized she could never go on a restrictive diet again if she wanted a more peaceful relationship with food and her body, especially when she retired from competitive sport. She spent the next decade slowly internalizing Intuitive Eating principles, and now, she will tell you the best thing she has ever done for her health is heal her relationship with food. Eden aims to inspire others to recognize that a fueled body performs better than a starving body in all phases of life. She challenges everyone – in her mountain community and beyond – to not let the fear of food, fear of judgment, or fear toward anything else keep them from leading the lives they’re meant to live. If you ask Eden, the keys to becoming truly fearless are eating more food around our activities, appreciating our bodies for what they allow us to do vs how they look, and moving our bodies in ways we actually enjoy. | From Heart Defect to Triple Transplant Triumph | 09 Apr 2024 | 00:34:57
In episode 45 of The Heart Chamber Podcast, we dive into Aimee Mackovic's inspiring journey through a triple organ transplant during the pandemic. An accomplished poet and English professor from Austin, Texas, Aimee shares her battle with a congenital heart defect and subsequent heart and liver failures. Her memoir, "Contains Recycled Parts," available on Amazon, details this life-altering experience. Aimee was born with a congenital defect and needed the Fontan procedure at 15 months old. To her surprise, she learned at age 44, she would need a new heart and liver and then, eventually, a new kidney. We discuss the challenges she faced, including recovery, the importance of understanding medical information, and the invaluable role of community support. Aimee emphasizes the significance of emotional readiness and the impact of writing as a healing tool. Tune in to hear her incredible story of resilience and the life-saving power of organ donation. A Little More About Today's GuestAimee Mackovic was born with a congenital defect (a hole in the middle of her heart) and underwent her first open heart surgery at 15 months for a pulmonary banding, which was a temporary fix. That "fix" lasted until she was 22 years old. At 22, Aimee underwent another open-heart surgery to potentially now repair the hole. Due to the nature of the defect, a full repair was not possible, so they did a newly touted Fontan procedure, which was meant to be a bridge surgery to an eventual heart transplant. Well, another 22 years later with another hospital stay, she is admitted to Dell's Children Hospital in Austin, TX with heart and liver failure. The very complex and urgent nature of her case caused her to be taken on by Stanford Hospital in California, where she received her heart and liver on December 13th, 2019. She received a kidney transplant in June of 2022. In June of 2023, she moved back to Austin, TX, where she resumed her teaching life at Austin Community College and her social life with her friends. Her memoir, Contains Recycled Parts, is a humorous, gut-wrenching look at her triple-transplant journey. Insurance trauma. 22:01 Surgery was essential to go back to work, so Tim had to enlist legal help. 26:25 Professional, supportive, and unforgettable open-heart surgery experience. 28:15 Recovery, fear, and determination after medical ordeal. 30:55 Grateful for support. 37:12 From junk food to healthy eating habits. 38:08 Cholesterol medicine stopped; trainer helped improve health. 41:15 Cherishing life after overcoming adversity and health issues. A Little More About Today's GuestTim Rogers lives in Jackson Wyoming and has lived there for over 31 years. He came out to Jackson after graduating from St. Mary’s College in Moraga California in June 1992. Tim came to ski for one season and never went back to California. He's a 2nd-grade teacher at Colter Elementary in town. He's also a part-time ski instructor at the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. Tim has 2 daughters ages 15 and 17, who really seem to think they are better skiers than him which he begs to differ because he can carve on skis and all they do is ski straight down the mountain and never turn. Now for the not-so-fun stuff, Tim was diagnosed with AFib about 5 years ago when he was on the operating table for a hernia. One of the nurses noticed he was in AFib when she looked at the heart monitor. That was the beginning of his journey that ended up in having open heart surgery on August 25th, 2023 down at the University of Utah Hospital in Salt Lake. Tim was in AFib 24 hours a day for months. He went through his stress test in AFib, he had 3 cardioversions in November 2022 and an ablation down in Salt Lake in December 2022. That obviously didn’t work and he was referred to another electrophysiologist down in Salt Lake. He had his maize procedure down in Salt Lake on August 25th of 2023. This surgery with a change in his diet changed his life forever. Tim got a second chance with his life and he is not going to screw this up.
