Mill Valley Music Festival - Meet the Headliners: Margo Price, Anders Beck (Greensky Bluegrass) and Eric Johnson (Fruit Bats)03 Sep 202401:02:28

Listen in as Tales From The Green Room corrals three star power artists from the 2024 Mill Valley Music Festival! Margo Price joins the green room conversation after her festival performance and moments before her late night exclusive show at Sweetwater Music Hall later that evening - musing on demystifying psilocybin, her journey to “California Sober” status, touring with her husband of 20-years, and her penchant for speaking out on important issues. Dobbrow guitar-player-extraordinaire, Anders Beck of Greensky Bluegrass, follows with what turns out to be a “cosmic” discussion with host Dennis Strazulo about Anders’ all-time favorite Grateful Dead show which coincidentally was Dennis’ first, then reflecting  on the thrill of playing with his heroes and sharing some memorable stories experienced along the way. Eric Johnson of Fruit Bats closes out chatting about his Marin County music connection, the resurgence of his band, their expanding audience, and the inspiration behind his music.

Wolf Jett07 Mar 202400:51:09

Wolf Jett founding members Jon Payne (drums) and Chris Jones (guitar/lead vocals) share their evolution from playing in their first band together (Scary Little Friends) leading to their soon-to-be released (March 8, 2024) second album, “Time Will Finally Come.” Their journey took an unexpected turn when they were hunkered down during COVID at Jon’s 3 acre property in the Santa Santa Cruz Mountains. Just days after construction of Jon’s dream studio was completed, his home on the property - and the studio - were destroyed by a massive lightning fire. Their story of inspiration and perseverance is a testament to the resiliency of these fine gentlemen -  and is reflected in their soulful sounds dubbed as “Cosmic Mountain  Music” emanating the joyful vibe of their folk, blues and americana inspirations.

Sound Summit 2024 - Grace Bowers, Lech Wierzynski (California Honeydrops), and James Wallace (Skyway Man)03 Oct 202401:18:00

Hosts Dennis Strazulo and Tami Larson sit down backstage with a divergent group of talent at Sound Summit 2024, the annual music festival atop majestic Mt. Tamalpais across the Bay from San Francisco.

Fresh off her releasing her debut album, Wine on Venus, and her appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, rising Nashville star and Gibson Guitar endorsed phenom, Grace Bowers (Grace Bowers & The Hodge Podge), chats about how she was influenced by BB King and her humble rise to prominence -  from playing in her bedroom to appearing with Dolly Parton and Tyler Childers -  and explains why she is not a prodigy!  Demonstrating she has a mind and soul beyond her 18 years of age, Grace expresses what drives her -  a profound hope and passion that her music makes people feel something - whether it makes them dance or feel an emotion.

Super-soulful, Lech Wierzynski, leader of The California Honeydrops, who like Grace Bowers, returned to his Bay Area roots performing at Sound Summit - the band’s first stop on their national tour promoting its new album, Keep on Diggin’ -  discusses the band’s improvisational influences, the role of Spotify in the new music industry landscape, and the impact of the mentors who shaped his trumpet skills, and provides a peek into his iPod sourcing the playlist for the band’s touring road trips, introducing listeners to an array of obscure, delightful music to add to their own playlists.

Multi-talented James Wallace - aka, Skyway Man, delves into the eclectic inspirations of his music, originally sourced from his random discovery of mysterious letters in an abandoned motorcycle shop in North Carolina, filled with esoteric and UFO-related content, touching on the brotherhood of aliens and ascension to a fourth dimension. Wallace shares how his  passion for storytelling through song remains unwavering, providing a glimpse into the mind of Skyway Man and an example of the resilience and creativity that drives artists to keep sharing their gifts with the world.

Reed Mathis Unveils the Rhythm and Spirit of True Musical Creativity23 Jan 202500:55:14

In an insightful discussion on the "Tales from the Green Room" podcast, Reed Mathis provides host Dennis Strazulo and listeners with a detailed preview of his upcoming podcast series “The Gifts of Improvising” which debuts January 29, 2025 on the Osiris Media Podcast Network. Reed opens the door to a new, profound exploration of the role and challenge of artists as they navigate improvising the music of their heroes and legends, analyzed in detail during discussions with fellow musicians throughout 12 introspective episodes. Reed delves into the dynamics of the jam band scene and the authenticity of spontaneous musical creation.

Previously connected with iconic projects like Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey and Tea Leaf Green, and with artists including Steve Kimock, Billy Strings, and Bill Kreutzmann, Reed shares the conception and evolution of his podcast with refreshing candor and excitement - describing it not merely as an exploration of improvisation but as a spotlight on the reenactment versus innovation debate within music. Listen as Reed challenges the norm of merely quoting musical heroes and urges a portrayal of personal truth through music. The essence of his message is about fostering a space where musicians are encouraged to "play themselves," offering a raw reflection of their true, creative essence rather than adhering strictly to established templates.

The soon to be released series features an impressive roster of musicians, each bringing their unique experiences and insights to light, including: Joe Russo, Marco Benevento, Steve Kimmock, Adam McDougald, and Jay Lane taking a deep dive into musical philosophies and personal anecdotes that reveal much about these beloved names in music.

“The Gifts of Improvising” also includes a touching homage to Phil Lesh, featuring reflections from Natalie Cressman, Elliot Peck, and Grahame Lesh - a moving tribute to Lesh’s indelible impact on both Mathis’s own career and the broader music landscape.

Enjoy this discussion as Reed muses about the art and joy of truly improvising in anticipation of his podcast release.

Quotes From The Episode

He looked like he had just fired down six fat ones…and he doesn't smoke…and his eyes were spinning. - Dennis McNally describing David Hidalgo after playing Jerry Garcia’s Alligator guitar.

The instrument's a living thing. It has a life of its own. It shouldn't be kept behind glass. It should be out in front of people. With that emotion passing through.- Jack Barton

The biggest bummer about it these days is just how everybody's got a super computer in their pocket, and everybody's addicted to the shit, and unless you engage with social media, people don't know that you're active. - Sam Grisman

I never imagined myself becoming a guitarist ever. I never had big aspirations to be a musician or play guitar at all. But I started playing during the pandemic. - Bella Rayne

Honestly,  I was thrilled to play with all of these musicians, but I have a special place in my heart for the guys from Los Lobos. Yeah. I mean, holy cow. What a thrill. - Jill Simmons

From the beginning, I'm grateful. That we've been able to do what we've wanted to do all these years. And for it to come around to where it's at now.  And the friends that we've made along the way. That's why we're here today. - David Hidalgo

Quotes From The Episode

I grew up with improvisation, all the time, hearing it, seeing my father do it, and Miles Davis, Coltrane, playing in the house all the time  growing up, so, it just seemed the most natural thing in the world to improvise. - Jeff Matson

The thing I always heard was that the East Coast audience were a little more vociferous. And, West Coast audience were a little more chill, like  “we don't get carried away.” I mean, wherever you come from, if you're a deadhead, you love the music. -Jeff Matson

It's a perfect warm up for anyone planning to catch SGP shows as they tour the country,  and a chance for listeners who have already heard this must-see band to learn more about two of its extraordinary members. Listen and you'll want to hang out with them!

Highlights

There's something about the groove here. It's different. I kind of always say I don't trust a drummer who hasn't spent some time in New Orleans. Yeah. I mean, it's just, it's in the air. You feel it, you're so spoiled down here, man. It's just amazing. It’s unifying too!

-Wally Ingram praising the New Orleans music scene

Detroit's got such a rich musical tradition, and I had a chance to come up under a lot of the greats and people like Ralph Armstrong, who played with Mahavishnu Orchestra and got a chance to play with Allan Barnes, sax player from Donald Byrd and the Blackbyrds. I had great teachers like Rodney Whitaker, the great upright bass player in Detroit. So I got a strong foundation in blues bebop, R&B, and then played in church and also in Michigan there was a strong jam band community, so I was kind of always in and out of that.

-Ari Teitel on learning from the greats in his home state of Michigan

It opens you up. You stay open for the moments, for those times when you might go off script. But that's where the magic is. That's the sauce. Those are the moments I freaking live for. You're on the edge, you don't know what's gonna happen, and then you come up. Especially if I were playing with like Wally or Andrew, I'm confident in that unknown. It will present a lot of opportunities for some great moments, and  in those moments you discover some new musical ground and then everybody shares a smile.

-Ari Teitel on how his jazz training opens him up to magical musical moments

When I was 19, I met Clyde Stubblefield. in Madison, Wisconsin. A friend of mine brought him to see me play, and I met him and I asked him if he teaches lessons. He goes, no, no man, just play. Just come down every Monday night. I’m at this club. Just come down. So I would go down there and watch him play. Just like what you guys were talking about. And he would say, oh yeah, you're that guy. A drummer, okay, you're up next set. And you'd have to just sit in with his band, which is a full R&B band with horns and they'd be like, oh shit. Clyde's got another drummer. Shit. So you'd have to sit in with his band and hold your own. He was very open to that. And we became great friends his whole life and we played together a lot.

-Wally Ingram on learning from legendary James Brown drummer, Clyde Stubblefield

I was at the show seeing Robert Randolph when I was 11 years old. My dad got everybody in the section to point at me…this kid, this kid! So he calls me up. I played for two minutes and then his guitar tech came to usher me off. Like, okay, that was it. Good job buddy. And then Rob Randolph waved him off, and said, no, no, no, he's staying up. So I  played a whole 20 minutes with him. He lifted me up. Yeah. Put me on top of a chair. I didn't know it was happening, my legs were flailing!

-Ari Teitel reflecting on his big moment on stage with Robert Randolph at age 11

I didn't really know the function of a keyboard in a band fully until I heard about Ray Charles and heard what he did for the first time. I had never played a Rhodes piano. It felt insane the first time I played one. It was Ray Charles really that opened my mind. And then it was like Art Tatum and Oscar Peterson. And that was cool with my parents 'cause they were classically proficient. But then it started to deepen. Then you, obviously, learn about Miles Davis

NOLA's River Eckert, Jake Eckert & Shaggy Davis (ft. Luther Dickinson) - Musical Legacy and Culinary Traditions -Behind The Scenes at JazzFest (Part2)04 Jun 202500:50:29

In this engaging episode restaurateur, music promoter, and local legend  Chris 'Shaggy' Davis welcomes Tales From The Green Room and  listeners to  Day 2 of the 10th annual NOLA Crawfish Festival, a celebration that marries New Orleans' rich musical heritage with its vibrant culinary culture held at The Broadside New Orleans. The episode features an interview with rising star keyboard player/vocalist/singer song-writer, and band leader, 15-year-old River Eckert and his father, Jake Eckert. Father and son reflect on their musical journeys, from River's early days learning jazz and blues to Jake's extensive experience with the Dirty Dozen Brass Band and his current gig with The New Orleans Suspects. The conversation, recorded after River's appearance at the NOLA Crawfish Festival and an hour before his next gig playing with George Porter, Jr., delves into the significance of familial legacy in New Orleans music, personal anecdotes about growing up around legendary musicians, and the impact of the city's supportive musical community.

A special guest appearance by Luther Dickinson (North Mississippi All-Stars and Crawfish Fest stalwart) adds to the rich tapestry of stories, illustrating the unique cultural ecosystem of New Orleans, with Luther revealing the secret to his improvisational skills.  Additionally, Shaggy shares his personal history, from boiling crawfish in his backyard to founding Crawfish King (the episode’s presenting sponsor along with Cochon King BBQ), and offers insight into the festival's evolution and his friendship with Dave Matthews.

HIGHLIGHTS

To be honest, what I do, what I really get paid to do at the highest level and what I did with
Phil Lesh, or what I did with the Black Crowes, or whatever, like high end, high octane stuff, fearless improvisation, I learned at The Maple Leaf. . Johnny (Vidacovich) and George (Porter) taught me how to roll…I'd show up with songs and set lists, but they didn't want that man. They didn't even want songs. They just wanted to improvise for two full sets. And it would scare me to death. But I learned how to do it, man. And that's the real juice.I have a huge debt to the  New Orleans culture.
-Luther Dickinson on his relationship with New Orleans

It's not ever annoying to hang out with older people because they're the ones with the knowledge. I'm my age and my generation's the one who's learning in the present moment. So when I'm around all those guys, it's just I soak up any information that I can possibly get.

-River Eckert on being 15 and hanging out with older guys in the music scene

There's a lot of music in the family. My great-grandmother and great grandfather. My great grandmother was a well-known vaudeville musician, And they were really menstrual types and well known at the time, Goldie Green and Bart Green and that was way back, silent movies, you know. Every department store, every function. That was before sound and movies. So they kind of got going like that. I tracked my grandmother all around and learned that lifestyle. My grandmother said to me before she passed, she said, you know, you got the blessing and the curse!

-Jake Eckert on growing up in a musical family.

I started just having backyard boils outside of the fairgrounds. I was close with all the New Orleans musicians. I'm lucky to call 'em friends.  So I used to say, hey, come play in this backyard…do a cheap ticket, all you can eat, crawfish kind of thing. And we'd get anyone from Anders Osborne to George Porter. It was just always cool. Put food and music together. It's kind of my jam.

Zachary Richard - Canadian Star, Louisiana Native - on Music, Cajun Culture, and Heritage - Behind The Scenes at JazzFest (Part 3)25 Jun 202500:38:26

In this episode of 'Tales from the Green Room,' the hosts engage in an enlightening conversation - and history lesson -  with singer-songwriter, Cajun culture activists, and International recording artist, Zachary Richard. Richard first reflects on his deep ties with Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley, CA  - playing and hanging with Huey Lewis and Bob Weir - before musing on his touring experiences and unique cross-cultural identity as both an American and  French Canadian artist. The interview was recorded in the green room at Chickie Wah Wah, a premier New Orleans music venue, just after Richards's set on the last day of JazzFest 2025, moments before his after-show at the club that evening.

The discussion delves into the historical and cultural impacts of the Acadian deportation and the preservation of French culture in Louisiana; while Richard recounts his career in music, his prolific work in both French and English, and his passion for children's literature and poetry. The episode offers a heartwarming look at Richard’s collaboration with his neuro-motor handicapped grandson on a musical project - his latest album Handicap Bonheur - and his hopes for cultural and linguistic preservation through nonprofit endeavors. Richard’s reflection on his  performance at Jazz Fest and his thoughts on American and French cultural intersections add depth to this rich dialogue on music, heritage, and identity.

Highlights

I'm the most American of the French Canadians and the most French of the Americans because I've been going across the border of Quebec, singing in French for 50 years. So, it's a little disheartening to see the tension between the United States and our friends to the north,  especially since I've spent most of my professional career singing in French and working in Quebec. But so goes it, and I’m still part of that culture…I'll be playing in Quebec this summer, which, which I really enjoy doing,  'cause it gets so hot in Louisiana.

-Zachary Richard on being part of both American and French-Canadian Cultures

To become a Canadian citizen, I have to swear an oath of allegiance to the king now. It  just struck me as something that I couldn't possibly imagine doing. Swearing an oath of allegiance to a British monarch when my ancestors had suffered so terribly from the fact that they had refused to sign such an allegiance.

-Zachary Richard on loyalty to his ancestors.

I was torn the United States, back in the nineties and  Sweetwater was our home, away from home, in the Bay Area. Sweetwater was so cool! Jeanie Patterson…. she was a real firecracker and we had a lot of fun with Jeanie and she was so welcoming. And the club was really a lot of fun to play because it was easy to pack. And Huey Lewis would come out, Bob Weir came out, and then we'd go and party at Bob's place. I can't remember too much about that, but I know it was good.

-Zachary Richard on his memories playing at Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley, CA

A Deep Dive with Holly Bowling: From Classical Roots to Jam Band Sensation11 Jun 202500:50:38

Super-creative, virtuoso pianist, Holly Bowling joins the show in the first-ever podcast recorded in The Green Room at Garcia’s Chicago. Holly shares the etiology of her genre-crossing and improvisational style in between her two incredible debut appearances at this spectacular venue - playing the music of Phish and The Grateful Dead on solo piano! The episode delves into Holly’s classical training, influences, and balancing the dual aspects of meticulous arrangement and spontaneous performance in her work, highlighting her diverse approaches to both solo and collaborative concerts.

Holly fondly recalls with the hosts her time learning under Phil Lesh at Terrapin Crossroads and the impact it had on her musical career and relationships. The conversation takes listeners behind the scenes of Holly’s musical endeavors during the pandemic, uniquely recording while immersed in spectacular national landscapes (The Wilderness Sessions), and how she cleverly lured GreenSky Bluegrass into her world. Holly also provides a glimpse into her personal life, including her experiences as a mother and the musical talent of her young son, Ryland.

HIGHLIGHTS

The whole point of playing music for other people is to connect emotionally.  It’s the sameness of the human experience… we're all human doing this life thing together. My favorite shows I've ever attended are the ones where there is that kind of emotional range and depth, whether it's total joy and ecstasy to shows where I have wept in public.

-Holly Bowling on how she uses the piano to evoke the emotions and feelings of an audience, much in the same way Jerry Garcia did with his guitar.

I’m really excited about it. Everyone's like, “you're doing a solo piano show, a quiet listening thing at Cervantes?” I'm like, yes. It's going to be amazing. We’re gonna totally turn the expectations upside down. It’s also a party.  My shows are a much more inward experience, so we’re going to drop a grand piano in there, put seats in, and transform it in a way that most people have never seen Cervantes.

"Danny's Live Dead" - Curating Chemistry and Community with Danny Luehring17 Jul 202500:48:29

In this episode of Tales From The Green Room -  mixed with joyous reflection, levity, and emotion - drummer extraordinaire Danny Luehring discusses the origins and evolution of Danny's Live Dead, a weekly Grateful Dead show hosted by him every Wednesday at Peri’s Tavern in Fairfax, California. Danny shares insights into how the show started after the closure of  Phil Lesh's beloved Terrapin Crossroads, the challenges and rewards of curating a rotating lineup of musicians, and the significance of community and chemistry in live music.

The hosts delve into Danny's musical background, memorable moments from his performances at Terrapin with his band, San Geronimo, and his first time playing with Phil Lesh, as he lauds the lasting impact of the Terrapin era. The conversation highlights the magic of live music, the depth of the Grateful Dead's influence, and Danny's future aspirations for his musical endeavors.

HIGHLIGHTS

You see all the people that you know are ready for it and that trust you. That’s the chemistry, too. I mean, chemistry, community…all those things. You can just line it up just right. And every night's different, but, my thing is I want it to be fucking amazing every night!

I think music is a dimension. I don't know how else to explain it. Music is such a unit, like a dimension…the way it affects people, in general, like a blanket, on people, it just makes me feel like it's gotta be bigger than we think. And the Dead is probably one of the things that really got me thinking about that.

My dad played guitar and I wanted to be a guitar player. So, for my fifth birthday he bought me an electric guitar and I remember it was at a costume party and I was dressed as a Denver Bronco and I put this thing on, and I broke the high string and it snapped back and hit me. And I thought it shocked me. 'cause it was an electric guitar. I mean, I was five. I was just like, oh my God. Drumsticks, please!

Terrapin for me was something that a hundred percent changed my direction in life. I wasn't a Deadhead.I literally knew like two Dead songs. The first time I played at Terrapin I just kind of had to learn under fire. It is not like I didn't know who the Dead were, and they were obviously on my radar, I just wasn't, I wasn't ready until I I was in those circumstances. And then just in that… I don't know, it's hard to explain what happened.

Highlights

Spreading love and kindness and joy and being silly with each other. That's really what's gonna get us through. So, when you are lost or distraught or in the darkness for a little too long, just ask yourself, what can I do? What am I good at? What do I love doing.. and do that.

~Sunshine Garcia Becker

I spent a lot of time in Melvin Seals and JGB. And a third of that band is women.  I had the most spiritual and wonderful and warm and special experiences of my life on stage, off stage with the women in JGB.

~Zach Nugent

Everybody here knows exactly how it started for me. And I would say that being thrown into that is such a big part of my story and being literally thrown in headfirst. I learn so much still every day from everybody that I play with. And I say that I'm still pretty malleable and just pick up on a little bit of whatever I can.

~Bella Rayne

The last maybe six months, I've had at least two people tell me they've never seen a woman play drums. We play for these kids and those are some of my favorite ones because there's so many little girls there and they don't get to see bands often…for them, the one or two times they ever see a band, to see at least one woman on stage…I love that.

Joe Marcinek w/ Rick King (Dead Funk Summit) + Jeremy Hoenig (Melvin Seals & JGB) - Behind The Scenes at JazzFest (Part 4)22 Aug 202500:48:49

In this episode, Tales From The Green Room presents their conversations with Joe Marcinek and Jeremy Hoenig recorded before their respective performances during Jazz Fest 2025 in New Orleans – featuring two  musicians swimming in the same music circles in the San Francisco Bay Area and nationally - and both connected with Melvin Seals!   Marcinek joins the show before his stellar appearance leading Dead Funk Summit during the Crawfish Festival at The Broadside, and is joined by soulful percussionist, drummer, vocalist, Rick King – a member of the Summit on this day.  King talks about getting drawn into the Grateful Dead vibe, including with his own band, Rick King's Royal Hustle, elaborating on how magic happens on stage with Marcinek.

Hoenig sits down with the hosts before holding down the beat on drums at his gig with Melvin Seals & JGB at Café Istanbul -  made possible by venue host Mitch Stein, responsible for curating a stellar lineup of musicians at the venue during Jazz Fest.

The Marcinek segment – recorded the very day his new album, The Groove Sessions, was released -  delves into Joe’s late entry into music, his love for New Orleans sounds, the evolution of his Dead Funk Summit project now taking on a life of its own, and the special energy created by different musicians joining the venture around the country - including the likes of George Porter, Jr. and the aforementioned, Melvin Seals. The Crawfish King, Shaggy Davis, even makes a cameo during the interview!

Hoenig talks about his own musical journey  from being inspired by his father's record collection to his current gig with the iconic Seals, playing with Camille Boudin of The Radiators, and reflects on “falling into the groove” playing beats the first time he entered the New Orleans music scene. Jeremy identifies a cadre of his favorite New Orleans drummers and how playing with Melvin Seals & JGB is the perfect fit for him.

Joe Marcinek, Rick King, and Jeremy Hoenig go in depth sharing their experiences in the music scene, their love for improvisation, and the collaborative spirit they embody, providing for a heartwarming and informative episode.

HIGHLIGHTS

When you have a band that plays all the time, it's easy to kind of go through the motions…where if you've never played together or it's something new, everyone's really locked in. Are we hitting the changes? Are we going to the move? Any little change that a musician does, that's when the magic happens.
-Joe Marcinek on brining in different musicians to his "Dead Funk Summit"

I read something about Miles Davis saying, “ I don’t talk to my musicians about music, because if I would have to talk to 'em about it, I hired the wrong people in the first place. And I always think about that.
-
Rick King on the possibility of creating situations where magic can happen on stage among musicians, if you talk too much about it.

You can imagine how proud I am  to be playing this music, which for me has all the styles that I love, and  the music I gravitate towards. It's blues, it's funk, it's reggae, it's jazz, it's country. It's all these rhythms. And Jerry knew, when he had his own band, he wanted to explore all those different things. So that's why I feel it’s a very good fit for me… and personally, I just, I enjoy it. It lets me have everything that I love in one band.
-Jeremy Hoenig on being a member of "Melvin Seals & JGB"

Amy Helm – Legacy, Recovery, and the Midnight Ramble - High Sierra Music Festival (Part 3)09 Oct 202500:40:31

Fresh from bringing the spirit of the Midnight Ramble to the High Sierra Music Festival stage, Amy Helm sits down with the hosts for a moving and unflinching conversation about family, recovery, and carrying forward a legacy. Recorded backstage among the festival magic, this episode blends raw honesty with deep musical history.

Listen to Amy open up about:

  • The Phoenix Rising: How Levon Helm turned personal crisis into renewal with the legendary Midnight Rambles in his Woodstock barn, sparking his recovery and Grammy-winning resurgence.
  • The Kitchen Meeting That Changed Everything: An encounter between the Helm and Lesh families that inspired Phil Lesh to build Terrapin Crossroads.
  • Holding a Legacy: What it means to carry forward a parent’s vision with authenticity.
  • Bringing the Ramble to High Sierra: The first-ever festival Ramble, with Amy’s son on drums alongside original band members, capturing the tradition’s family spirit.
  • Phil Lesh as Mentor: How Phil guided her into the Grateful Dead songbook and gave her permission to reinvent songs in her own voice.
  • Writing Silver City: Turning her own stories—and the story of a young fan lost to addiction—into songs of resilience, honesty, and self-discovery.
  • Festivals, Family, and Community: Why inclusive, non-pretentious festivals matter more than ever in an industry full of “taste-makers.”

Equal parts storytelling and testimony, Amy Helm’s words remind us that music is more than entertainment — it’s survival, legacy, and the thread that binds communities together.

HIGHLIGHTS

The whole thing about holding a legacy… it doesn’t matter whether your dad was a carpenter or a drummer. What matters is how other people are remembering it and feeling filled up by it.
— Amy Helm on carrying forward Levon Helm’s vision

The Midnight Rambles were about recovery — physically, spiritually, financially. My dad started with 20 people just to pay the electric bill, and from there he got his voice back, his career back, and won three Grammys.
— Amy Helm on the rebirth of Levon Helm

Phil showed me that these songs were meant to be rediscovered in every fraction of every moment. That gave me permission to find my own way into the Grateful Dead tradition.
— Amy Helm on Phil Lesh as mentor

Chaparelle - "Eroticana": Finding a Lane, Creating a World - High Sierra Music Festival (Part 2)19 Sep 202500:28:18

In this episode of Tales From the Green Room, the hosts welcome Chaparelle, the Texas-based pop, folk and classic-country band created by Zella Day, Jesse Woods, and Beau Bedford. The trio discuss their unique musical lane, inspired by a blend of romance, personal experiences, and a mutual affinity for original music, which has earned them a dedicated following. Special guest, Rob Bleetstein (SiriusXM Producer and Host) joins the show, having dubbed the band’s music style as “Eroticana” - while Zella Day describes the essence of her theatrical, sometimes sensual flair blending with the band’s authentic country-influenced performances.

Recorded after the band’s second remarkable set in two days at the High Sierra Music Festival - moments before they hit the road to promote their new record, Western Pleasure – Zella, Jesse, and Beau delve into their personal dynamics and the importance of collaboration. This episode encapsulates a blend of humor (touching on the difference between Texas and California hippies!), camaraderie, and heartfelt moments, offering a comprehensive insight into the lives and music of Chaparelle and a peek into their aspirations, surely leading them to a bright future.

HIGHLIGHTS

Zella and I got together romantically, and we wanted to start a band together… and write some songs… but writing songs while you're in a relationship, just two people, can be pretty difficult. It gets very personal, very quick, and we were still in our honeymoon phase, and we were like, why are we doing this to ourselves? Let's stick with the romance. Then we met Beau… that third angle on the triangle… and everything just fit.

-Jesse Woods on writing songs while in a romantic relationship with Zella Day and Beau Bedford saving the day.

If you look at the packaging of the vinyl…every last lyric, everything really is within the world we’ve created. And we're getting better and better at being able to decipher what that world is. Somebody recently said to me, which I really liked, that was good advice, and I think it's what we're doing here, is to find a lane and take that lane completely over.. And so that's what we're doing. We're the only ones doing it like we are right now.

-Zella Day on Chaparelle’s mission to dominate their lane.

Seeing you at clubs is one thing…but when you're on these bigger stages with bigger PAs, even though the music is totally country and it's put together, there's so much space in between everything, the way the songs are constructed, the way you guys play…there's just plenty of room for everything. But the rock element really comes through on so many of the songs… I have so many friends who saw you for the first time, and especially some younger ones who maybe are not big country lovers and they were just like freaking out.

-Rob Bleetstein praising Chaparelle's performance on the big stage at High Sierra Music Festival.

I think we want to just be surrounded with people that we really love and to make music that we love. I think we're talented enough for good things to happen, but the rest of the world's in control of that. We only in control of putting out songs that we love and that we believe in… and trying to hang out with people that we love.

-Beau Bedford on the band’s aspirations.

Andy Frasco's Evolution & Festival Tales - High Sierra Music Festival (Part 1) 09 Sep 202500:29:09

Fresh off a wild set at the legendary High Sierra Music Festival, Andy Frasco - bandleader, podcaster, and all-around force of nature - kicks back with the hosts for a candid, hilarious, and heartfelt conversation recorded right on the Plumas-Sierra County Fairgrounds.

Andy opens up about:

  • The magic of High Sierra and why community and family matter at festivals
  • His leap into music (inspired by piano teacher Holly Bowling) and how he built a career from scratch
  • Lessons learned from overcoming excess and finding purpose in writing songs that matter
  • Mentorship from legends like Dave Schools, Vince Herman, and George Porter Jr.
  • His podcast, where raw conversations with seasoned musicians fuel inspiration for the next generation

Equal parts levity and real talk, this episode is a love letter to live music culture and a reminder of why it’s worth preserving.

Long live High Sierra!

HIGHLIGHTS

“ Long live High Sierra.!” This is bigger than us. This festival, the idea of this festival is important…. families come together, music is being made, kids laughing, smiling, families laughing and smiling. You don't see that anymore. People camping. That's why we gotta keep these things sacred …that's my goal.
-
Andy Frasco on the greatness of High Sierra Music Festival.

I stopped writing songs to make everyone happy. And I started writing songs to make me happy. You can't preach happiness unless you're happy with yourself. And I'm finally in a spot where I'm good with myself.
-Andy Frasco on his approach to writing songs and the good place he is in.

It doesn't matter, when you start loving yourself, you just gotta love yourself. Even if you're 60, even if you're 70. Even if you're 10,. We gotta remember when we were seven years old. on the fucking swings, eating some ice cream, laughing by yourself, you know? That's it. We gotta get back to that. You have to get that feeling.
-
Andy Frasco on the importance of loving yourself.

Reflecting on her influences and the eclectic style defining her performances, Karina also addresses the importance of songwriting -  how she has developed that craft - and her approach to creating music that integrates structured songs with improvisational elements.

This fun and insightful interview captures Karina Rykman’s vibrant personality with rich dialogue highlighting her talent, adaptability, and dedication to her craft.

If you don’t find Karina playing around New York City while rejuvenating from her summer tour, catch her at the Hard Rock Riviera Maya January 20 - 24, 2026 as part of Widespread Panic’s Panic En La Playa

HIGHLIGHTS

And then for the next seven and a half years, I worked for Rocks Off and ended up as a GM. I made a whole salary. That was my whole life. I was working, working, working…and playing in five bands at the same time, and getting kind of cool illustrious gigs -  I was on the Today Show with Julia Michaels backing her up and played on America's Got Talent in the backing band -  like I was doing shit for sure - but I never ever thought that would parlay itself to where I would play music for a living. There was not a part of me that thought that would be a thing.

-Karina Rykman on the unexpected outcome of her music career.

It's very intoxicating to have people sing your songs back at you. It is very intoxicating! And to see Joy Ride, my song, being played on NFL football games. It’s being played on the radio. Like all these things where I'm just like, shit…that's crazy.

-Karina Rykman on writing songs.

I met my band mates, and I asked them to practice improvising with me because I got this crazy gig where it was gonna be an hour of improv. IAnd they were like, yeah. And then all of a sudden we got all these gigs and all this attention. We were just stepping on stage with no roadmap, zero, not an A section, not a B section, not a cover, nothing, and just improvising from the ground up. And people liked it.

-Karina Rykman on the genesis of her improv band

Greg Loiacono and Stingray - “We Don’t Talk, We Just Play”27 Jan 202600:17:06

Guests:

 Greg Loiacano – vocals, guitar
 Michael Urbano – drums
 Vicki Randle – percussion

In this episode of
Only in the Green Room, we sit down with Greg Loiacono & Stingray, a Bay Area super-group built on deep respect, serious groove, and a whole lot of joy. What started as a solo recording session for Greg Loiacano quickly turned into something much bigger when drummer Michael Urbano stepped in—and the chemistry was instant. Add longtime collaborator and powerhouse percussionist Vicki Randle, and Stingray was born.

The trio talks about the
unspoken language that defines their music: listening more than talking, playing for the song, and letting structure and feel guide everything. Influenced by classic soul, R&B, funk, and rock—from Curtis Mayfield and Marvin Gaye to Sly Stone and beyond—Stingray’s sound feels timeless but alive in the moment.

We dig into:

  • How the band formed organically (and accidentally)

  • Why joy and laughter are non-negotiable onstage

  • The rare magic of musicians who truly listen to one another

  • Playing parts instead of overplaying

  • Balancing Stingray with busy touring and recording schedules

  • Recording at the legendary 2200 Studios and feeling the weight of Bay Area music history

  • What’s next: new singles, more shows, and getting back into the studio

With lineup support from Tom Ayer’s, Kofi Brown, and Danny Eisenberg, Stingray is prioritizing what matters most—great songs, great vibes, and genuine connection.

If you’ve ever wondered what it looks like when seasoned musicians stop chasing “projects” and start chasing
feeling, this conversation says it all.

New singles out now:

  • Come Back Home

  • I Hope We Get to Dance

Recorded backstage, moments after finishing their November 2025 set at Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley, California —because the best conversations always happen only in the green room.

Greg Loiacono. Founder of Stingray, is best known as a gritty rock and soul man of legendy San Francisco rock band, The Mother Hips and his collaborations with Chris Robinson

Vicki Randle has recorded and/or toured with Aretha Franklin, Mavis Staples, George Benson, Lionel Richie, Kenny Loggins, Celine Dion, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Branford Marsalis, Jeffrey Osborne, Laura Nyro and Lyle Mays. She appeared in the HBO documentary Mavis!. She became the first female permanent member of the Tonight Show Band with Branford Marsalis, starting in May 1992 and continuing through May 2009.

Michael Urbano  toured extensively with John Hiatt (1995–1999), as one of Hiatt's "Nashville Queens" that included bassist Davey Faragher (Elvis Costello) and guitarist David Immergluck (Counting Crows). He also spent time as a drummer Smash Mouth. Before Smash Mouth, Urbano had played drums with The Spent Poets, The Kinetics, Deathray, Third Eye Blind, John Hiatt, Black Lab, Cracker, Paul Westerberg, Red House Painters, Willy DeVille, Camper Van Beethoven, and Sheryl Crow.[2]

Jon Chi's Harmonious Circle: Celebrating Community, Collaboration, and Live Music17 Jan 202600:43:24

Marin County singer-songwriter, community and music collaborator Jon Chi joins “Only In The Green Room” as the first guest under the show’s new banner—recorded in the Sweetwater Music Hall Green Room before Jon played to a packed house for his birthday show at the iconic venue. In a conversation full of gratitude, community love, and live-music philosophy, Jon reflects on how the Terrapin scene helped shape his musical orbit, why vulnerability is where the magic lives, and how live shows remain irreplaceable—no matter what AI does to recorded music. Special guests Stephanie Salva (Tumbleweed Soul) and Elliot Peck (Midnight North, Phil Lesh & Friends) pop in before joining Jon on stage, adding stories about collaborations, harmonies, and the deep relationships built through the Bay Area music community.

Creators & Guests

Creators & Guests Creators & Guests

The “how lucky am I to have stumbled into this community?” moment—and why Jon leads with love

The Terrapin Crossroads/Marin/Bay Area musician ecosystem (and all the overlap that makes it work) - spawning collaborations and lasting friendships

Jon’s musical roots: Massachusetts → Berklee College of Music → Bay Area scene

The JP McClean (Melvin Seals JGB)) origin story: their first day as students at Berklee,  a chart that looked like “hieroglyphics,” and instant respect

Vulnerability on stage: choosing connection over perfection

The “Yoga Mafia” crossover: how Now Yoga in Corte Madera became part of the music ecosystem

Dead nights + mashups: blending Bee Gees, Biggie, Lou Reed, and more into jam sets

Widespread Panic as Jon’s “first jam band show”—and later collaborating with bassist Dave Schools

The passing-down tradition: Jon’s kids performing and singing at shows

 Guest drop-ins:

Stephanie shares what she’s working on (Tumbleweed Soul, new trio, gigs with Dave Nelson Band)

Elliot talks first duo collaboration with Jon, returning from hiatus, and community support

Jon Chi’s Birthday Show All-Star lineup:

Sean Nelson — Drums

Angeline Saris — bass

Jordan Feinstein — keys

Minglewood Lewis Jr. — percussion

Patrick Byers, Natalie John, Andrew Ferren - Horns

Elliott Peck and Stephanie Salva - Vocals

Memorable moments & quotes:

“I mean, I want to talk about how much I love everyone.”

“I’d rather make a bunch of mistakes on stage and stay open to connect with people.”

“If you’re willing to share vulnerabilities, that’s where deeper relationships grow.”

“Even if AI disrupts recorded music—how do you ever replace live music?”

Topics that hit hard:

Why this scene works: It’s collaborative, supportive, and built on people being decent humans and strong musicians.

Why live music wins: Because it’s shared presence, unrepeatable moments, and real connection.

Why mashups matter: They expand the audience and keep traditions alive without turning them into copies.

If you’re new here…

This episode is a love letter to the Bay Area’s live music ecosystem—where jam culture, original music, yoga communities, and deep friendships all collide in the best way.

STEVE POLTZ-Backstage at Sweetwater Music Hall-including Bob Weir Tribute05 Mar 202600:28:32

Backstage at Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley, “Only in the Green Room” interviews singer-songwriter Steve Poltz, co-writer of Jewel’s multi-platinum “You Were Meant for Me,” as he tours promoting his new green-vinyl album Joy Ride.

Poltz discusses why he loves High Sierra Music Festival—its Grateful Dead–like anticipation, multigenerational family vibe, and resilience through hardships—and says this year’s new location feels like an important inaugural moment.

He shares collaborations including “Life Is Easy” with Andy Frasco (featuring Billy Strings, Mike Gordon, and Daniel Donato) and “Love a Little Bigger” with Vince Herman, praises Sweetwater’s staff and sound, and explains his setlist-free, improvisational approach, pre-show prayer, and desire to help audiences forget how hard life can be.

Poltz also recalls leading a Colorado audience in singalong of “Ripple” on the 30th anniversary of Jerry Garcia’s death without knowing it (watch/ listen as recreates that moment during his show at Sweetwater), describes a Dead & Co Sphere moment near the rail involving rock and roll photographer, Jay Blakesberg, and talks about writing spontaneous songs and a humorous Trump–Elon breakup tune.

Enjoy this engaging and entertaining conversation with the muti-talented, one-of-a-kind, Steve Poltz!
