| “Mississippi Queen” by Mountain (f/Scott Mellinger) | 24 Jul 2024 | 00:49:45 | |
This week, Zao guitarist Scott Mellinger joins us to explore Mountain's 1970 smash hit "Mississippi Queen." We ride the musical train back to the roots of metal, exploring how this southern rock anthem, with Leslie West's iconic guitar riffs and raw vocals, helped shape the heavy metal landscape. We trace the genre's evolution from its gritty beginnings to its modern, head-banging incarnations, and speculate on where it might go in the future. So, get your bell bottoms on and join us as we dissect the impact of "Mississippi Queen" and its legacy in the world of heavy music.

| "Rico Suave" by Gerardo (f/Paul Menotiades) | 01 Feb 2023 | 00:35:41 | |
Do you hate it when you show up to a date’s house in your best ripped jeans and leather jacket, only to be offered disgusting food by their scumbag mother? Well this episode’s for you! This week, we’re joined by my good buddy and bandmate Paul Menotiades to discuss Gerardo’s 1990 hit “Rico Suave”, a song that becomes infinitely more shocking when you dive into the lyrics. Oh, don’t worry…we do that in this episode. Our only addiction has to do with the one hit wonders, and today, we eat Gerardo raw like sushi.

| "Something About You" by Level 42 | 25 Jan 2023 | 00:33:03 | |
Welcome to the most bass-heavy episode of One Hit Thunder ever! Thanks to Level 42’s 1985 hit single “Something About You”, we get into a LOT of talk about the best instrument in the world…the good old electric bass. Frontman Mark King’s bass proficiency is impressive, but his songwriting is…well…next LEVEL. Stay tuned for a fun conversation about a jazz fusion band that drew us into the stream of undefined illusion.

| "Beds Are Burning" by Midnight Oil (f/Scott Mellinger) | 18 Jan 2023 | 00:38:36 | |
Midnight Oil shined a light on the plight of the Aboriginal communities in the Australian Outback with their 1987 hit “Beds Are Burning”. This anthemic song is widely considered one of the greatest pieces of music to ever come out of Australia, and any Australian listeners will likely be shocked that we’re discussing this band on a podcast about one hit wonders. The charts don’t lie, however, and this was Midnight Oil’s only Top 40 Billboard hit in the US. This week, we’re joined by Zao guitarist Scott Mellinger to decide if this band makes us want to dance when our earth is turnin’ or sleep while our beds are burnin’.

| "Informer" by Snow | 11 Jan 2023 | 00:33:28 | |
In 1993, the world was introduced to a white Canadian reggae artist named Snow. His hit song “Informer” topped the US Billboard charts for nearly two months straight, while Snow himself sat in a prison cell for maybe or maybe not puncturing another human being with a knife (aka stabbing them). This semi-autobiographical tune echoed a warning to whoever snitched on him, in the form of being “licky boom boomed down” by the artist himself. Are we risking this fate ourselves by discussing Snow this week, or is the assault on our eardrums punishment enough? Stay tuned to find out!

| "New Age Girl" by Deadeye Dick (f/ Johnny Yetsconish) | 04 Jan 2023 | 00:43:55 | |
Sometimes we have to bend the rules to qualify artists as appropriate subject matter for One Hit Thunder, but not this week. Deadeye Dick are an undeniable choice, as they are almost universally known ONLY for their catchy pop rock hit “New Age Girl”. This week, we’re joined by Johnny Yetsconish to decide if the Dumb and Dumber soundtrack was the EXACT place this song should be, or if there’s more meat on the bone when it comes to this fun 90s band.

| "Waiting For a Star To Fall" by Boy Meets Girl | 28 Dec 2022 | 00:34:40 | |
The songwriting duo Boy Meets Girl wrote chart-topping songs for several iconic artists, but it wasn’t until their 1988 single “Waiting for a Star to Fall” that they made a name for themselves as performers. The song was an enduring adult contemporary juggernaut, even finding its way into the hit film Three Men and a Little Lady a few years later. Even after their marriage ended, their song collaborations forged ahead, and they continue to release pop gems even today. This week, we explore their story and their songs, and we try to decide if Boy really should have met Girl in the first place.

| "Christmas Wrapping" and "I Know What Boys Like" The Waitresses | 21 Dec 2022 | 00:31:11 | |
The holiday season is here once again. To celebrate, we’re discussing the bizarre case of The Waitresses, which are a band that we’re able to discuss on One Hit Thunder because they’re a one hit wonder in two different countries for two different songs. While “Christmas Wrapping” is now considered a Christmas classic, it wasn’t well-known in the US until many years after its release. Meanwhile, “I Know What Boys Like” was ONLY a hit in the States. This week, we’re diving into the short-lived career of this Akron, Ohio band to determine if they bring the holiday cheer or leave us with a holiday sneer.

| "True" by Spandau Ballet | 14 Dec 2022 | 00:38:17 | |
Today is our 150th episode, so we had to bring the heat with an undeniable 80s jam. Spandau Ballet may have formed out of a love for the Sex Pistols, but their 1983 musical love letter “True” was inspired by the soulful sounds of Al Green and Marvin Gaye. This smooth pop classic dominated the radio airwaves for years, but we needed to know more. Can Producer Matt Kelly pronounce their name? Is “True” really Adam Sandler’s favorite song? Did Spandau Ballet TRULY bring the one hit thunder? On this week’s show, we ask the important questions about this well-dressed band.

| "Wasting My Time" by Default | 17 Jul 2024 | 00:35:41 | |
In this week’s episode, we dive into the Canadian rock band Default and their 2001 hit "Wasting My Time," a song that left an indelible mark on what many would call the "butt rock" genre. Our Patreon supporters voted for this track, so Matt and I are breaking down the elements that make this tune both memorable and, in some ways, quintessentially generic rock. Default's name feels fitting as we struggle to pin down any genre beyond that. Despite their breakup in 2013, the band's lead singer Dallas Smith took a surprising twist in his career that has us scratching our heads about the Canadian charts. Join us as we explore whether Default was truly wasting our time or if they hit a fleeting moment of musical thunder.

| "Insane in the Brain" by Cypress Hill (f/Matt Jurcevich) | 30 Nov 2022 | 00:38:35 | |
This week, return guest Matt Jurcevich joins us to discuss something that’s got US feeling insane in the membrane — the fact that we can categorize legendary rap group Cypress Hill as a one hit wonder. Despite having multiple high-charting albums and decades of widespread popularity, their 1993 single “Insane in the Brain” is the only one to cross over into the Top 20 on the Billboard charts. In this episode, we’ll break down their catalog, their vocal stylings, and even the awesome way they got banned from Saturday Night Live.

| "99 Luftballons" by Nena (f/Justin Humenik) | 23 Nov 2022 | 00:40:54 | |
Against all odds, a song completely sung in German floated all the way up to #2 on the Billboard charts in 1983, rising above some of the biggest artists of the 80s. Even more surprising, the danceable pop gem “99 Luftballons” was actually a protest song about a theoretical nuclear war. This week, we’re joined by Cheer Up Dusty vocalist Justin Humenik to find out if we should all pick up a few Nena records with the money we’ve got, or if we should think of them and let it go.

| "Black Velvet" by Alannah Myles | 16 Nov 2022 | 00:44:29 | |
After two decades of pursuing a music career, a 30 year old Canadian singer named Alannah Myles scored a #1 hit in 1989 with “Black Velvet”. While her success continued for years after in the Great White North, she completely fell off the Billboard charts of the United States. This week, we try to determine if the blame for her US decline should fall on the lack of promotion from her record label, or if the rest of Alannah’s catalog just lacked that slow southern style.

| "Standing Outside a Broken Phone Booth with Money in My Hand" by Primitive Radio Gods | 09 Nov 2022 | 00:36:57 | |
We’ve discussed close to 150 one hit wonders on the podcast at this point, but none have had as bizarre of a series of events that led to a hit as Primitive Radio Gods. Producer Matt Kelly considers “Standing Outside A Broken Phone Booth With Money In My Hand” not only a song title that he’s sure to butcher in this episode, but also a song that he considers one of the greatest of the 90s. Does the rest of the band’s catalog live up to the moody vibe of this jam though? This week, we try to figure out if Primitive Radio Gods leave us downhearted baby, or if we should bathe ourselves in the zebra flesh of this unique musical project.

| "I'll Be There For You" by The Rembrandts (f/Brian Rodrigeuz) | 02 Nov 2022 | 00:53:41 | |
Originally intended to be a theme song and nothing more, “I’ll Be There For You” gave The Rembrandts a Top 20 Billboard hit on the wings of NBC’s juggernaut of a sitcom Friends. The visual that the song provokes in everyone’s mind, however — that of a group of white twenty-something Manhattanites dancing and clapping around a fountain — soon led to the band actually apologizing for the song on MTV News. This week, High School Slumber Party’s Brian Rodriguez joins us to discuss not only the career of The Rembrandts, but also his fandom of the 90s sitcom.

| "Whoomp! There It Is" by Tag Team | 26 Oct 2022 | 00:37:50 | |
Hey Party People! One Hit Thunder back again. This week, the REAL tag team - myself and my co-host and producer Matt Kelly - jump in the ring with the massive stadium anthem “Whoomp (There It Is)”. The song never REALLY went away, but a recent resurgence thanks to an ice cream themed insurance commercial exposed this party classic to a whole new generation. Should Tag Team continue to repurpose this song in every possible way, or should the world be scooping into the rest of their almost impossible to find back catalog? Stay tuned to find out.

| "Home" by Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros (f/Tessa Markle) | 19 Oct 2022 | 00:42:01 | |
In 2010, a song by a ten-piece hippie folk pop group unexpectedly started appearing in seemingly endless amounts of movies, TV shows, and commercials. This sincere and lively tune caught the ear and heart of this week’s guest Tessa Markle, who later found herself dancing and singing along to them at an Arts Festival. The singsong love ballad leaves all of us asking what “home” really means, and if we should all be more hot and heavy pumpkin pie over Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros.

| "California" by Phantom Planet (f/Matt "Team Goldie" DiStefano) | 12 Oct 2022 | 00:58:12 | |
Phantom Planet had a modest radio hit with their single “California” in 2002. When a little TV show called The O.C. debuted and used the song as its theme song, however, it skyrocketed the band to stardom. The album The Guest was not just a favorite of this week’s guest Matt “Team Goldie” DiStefano, but it also had a permanent place in the CD rotation on early Punchline tours. When it came time for Phantom Planet to record a follow-up album, their shift in sound led to a slide off the charts. This week, we’re driving down the 101 and looking for the number one reason this great band didn’t reach even greater heights.

Break out the cherry wine and prepare to have your brain stimulated…we’re FINALLY taking a deep dive - or should we say SKINNY DIP - into Jermaine Stewart’s hit 1986 single “We Don’t Have To Take Our Clothes Off”! Should we all avoid showing up at Matt Kelly’s house unexpectedly? We’ll answer all these questions and more in this episode.

This week, we’re thrilled to be joined by Joe and Toby of the Riffs on Riffs podcast to dive into the compelling story of mid-90s artist Tracy Bonham and her iconic hit “Mother Mother.” Tracy, a classically trained musician for over a decade, collaborated with producers who had helped bring Radiohead and The Mighty Mighty Bosstones to the ears of millions, infusing her music with a unique blend of alternative rock and classical influences. Despite her immense talent, record label issues stalled her career before she could fully achieve mainstream success. Join us this week as we celebrate Tracy Bonham’s prolific journey and the impact of her unforgettable music.

There’s a good chance that if someone mentioned the song “But It’s Alright” by J.J. Jackson, you would say “uh…how does that one go?”. | "Pro Nails" by Kid Sister (f/Matthew Milligan) | 14 Sep 2022 | 00:46:20
Being that Matthew Milligan is currently our most frequent guest, we tend to give him a little more leeway with his song choices. That being said, he chose Kid Sister and her minor 2008 hit “Pro Nails”. Prior to this episode, neither producer Matt Kelly nor myself had ever heard this song from the Chicago based artist, which is surprising because it features Kanye West during a very prolific era of his career. But hey, this is what One Hit Thunder is all about: discovering music we may have missed otherwise. So get your toes done up with your fingernails matchin’, and join us for a deep dive into Kid Sister.

| “Cantaloop (Flip Fantasia)” by Us3 | 31 Aug 2022 | 00:36:18 | |
In the early 90s, London-based producer Geoff Wilkinson was given full access to legendary jazz label Blue Note Records’ entire discography to use samples in his project Us3. The resulting album Hand On The Torch mixed modern hip-hop with classic jazz, and on the heels of the first single “Cantaloop (Flip Fantasia)”, the record quickly ascended to the top 10 on the Billboard charts. Today on the show, we dive into the rest of Us3’s music to decide if there should’ve been a few more biddy-biddy bops in the mainstream, or if this project was just too funky funky to enjoy more success.

| "Walk the Dinosaur" by Was (Not Was) | 17 Aug 2022 | 00:38:23 | |
I am most definitely a sucker for all songs that have an associated dance. I know this is an audio-only podcast, but I can say FOR SURE say that you’d all have enjoyed watching One Hit Thunder producer Matt Kelly “walk the dinosaur” when we recorded this episode. We recorded this one as another episode of our “Ya Snooze, Ya Lose” category, since we’re pushing 150 episodes and no one has chosen it yet. We expected to have a funny conversation about a goofy dance song from the late 80s. What we DIDN’T expect was just how crazy of a career the guys in Was (Not Was) have had. You most certainly don’t want to miss this T-rex of an episode. Stay tuned!

| "Blue (Da Ba Dee)" By Eiffel 65 (f/Eric Taft) | 10 Aug 2022 | 00:45:06 | |
In the late 90s, three DJs living in Italy spent a few hours creating a club track that couldn’t even keep people on the dance floor. That would quickly change thanks to a little radio airplay, and before they knew it, “Blue” became an international hit. The song is equal parts catchy and silly, but what exactly is it about? This week, we’re joined by Eric Taft to help figure it out. Beyond producing, engineering, and playing in The Great Heights Band and So Fetch, Eric is also secretly one of Eiffel 65’s biggest fans. He helps us dive into the lyrics of “Blue” and figure out what’s really happening in this Europop classic.

Why is it that every time you turn on an episode of One Hit Thunder, you gotta listen to me do some intro where I try to be clever? Man, FUNK DAT! Just get to the episode! That’s what we’re about to do, as Matt and I dive into the career of Baltimore’s premiere grievance poet, Sagat.

| "Axel F" by Harold Faltermeyer | 03 Jul 2024 | 00:31:46 | |
Today, the new Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F movie has dropped on Netflix, and in honor of that, Matt and I decided to dive into the iconic theme song "Axel F," written by Harold Faltermeyer. This breakdance-inspired instrumental not only became a Top 5 hit but also defined the sound of the '80s. We explore the artistry behind this unforgettable tune, marvel at the intense talent of composer Harold Faltermeyer, and try to pinpoint the last time an instrumental song topped the charts. Join us as we celebrate this synth masterpiece and its lasting impact on both music and pop culture, just in time for Eddie Murphy's triumphant return as Axel Foley.

| "More Today Than Yesterday" by Spiral Starecase (f/Paul Menotiades) | 27 Jul 2022 | 00:35:40 | |
My good friend and musical collaborator Paul Menotiades always brings the heat with his song choices. Paul joins the four-timer club this week, and he follows up episodes about Harvey Danger, EMF, and the Dead Milkmen with yet ANOTHER classic banger in “I Love You More Today Than Yesterday” by Spiral Starecase. This enduring love anthem appeared on the band’s one and only album before their breakup, but did the rest of the album bring the thunder as much as this one did? Stay tuned to find out.

| "What Would You Do?" by City High | 20 Jul 2022 | 00:31:09 | |
It’s mind-boggling how many guests have passed on the opportunity to talk about City High’s catchy-yet-serious 1999 jam “What Would You Do?”, so Matt and I had no choice but to institute a new “Ya Snooze, Ya Lose” category of One Hit Thunder episodes and do this one ourselves. We can’t even imagine who WOULDN’T want to discuss this highly danceable song about having to do whatever it takes to feed your child, which also inexplicably breaks into Dr. Dre’s “The Next Episode” halfway through. What would WE do without this catchy yet lyrically-heavy hit? Stay tuned to find out.

| "Nobody Knows" by Tony Rich Project (f/Johnny Yetsconish) | 13 Jul 2022 | 00:49:45 | |
Return guest Johnny Yetsconish has an impressive track record of choosing the very best sad songs to discuss on One Hit Thunder. He keeps his streak alive this week by picking “Nobody Knows” by The Tony Rich Project. This relatable R&B jam took over the airwaves in 1996, but Tony quickly faded away from the mainstream soon after. Did we figure out why, or does nobody know it but him? Stay tuned to find out.

| "Come Baby Come" by K7 | 06 Jul 2022 | 00:37:07 | |
Our Patreon really swung for the fences by choosing K7’s 1993 hit “Come Baby Come” as the song we’re diving into this week. Did you know that K7 was just one guy, and not the name of the group of four men who seem to be featured in every music video? Neither did we. And in this episode, we REALLY try to determine if this song is about beckoning a woman to come closer, OR if it really IS just about bodily fluids. Stay tuned to find out if we slam the door on K7, or if he made us “come baby come baby baby come come” back for more.

| "Three Little Pigs" by Green Jellÿ (f/Matt Jurcevich) | 29 Jun 2022 | 00:41:45 | |
In 1993, the band Green Jellÿ had an unlikely Top 20 hit with their song “Three Little Pigs”, which was a twisted, rockin’ version of a story that we’re all familiar with from childhood. A crudely animated yet unforgettable music video helped launch this song into the stratosphere, and it has remained lodged in many of our brains for 30 years now. This week, we’re joined by Another Cheetah guitarist Matt Jurcevich to discuss whether we should all let Green Jellÿ in, or if we need to call Rambo to take care of this wild one hit wonder.

Norman Sann is our guest this week, and if you haven’t checked him out on TikTok yet, you’re missing out on relatable verses with wordplay that often taps into nostalgia from our own childhoods. That being said, it’s no surprise that Norman chose Ahmad’s 1994 single “Back In The Day” to discuss this week. Should we all be diving deeper into Ahmad’s catalog, or should we just leave HIM back in the day? Lace up your British Knights and grab a Tootsie Pop, because we’re about to find out.

| "Baby's Coming Back" by Jellyfish (f/Scott Klopfenstein) | 08 Jun 2022 | 01:00:40 | |
First time guest Scott Klopfenstein came in HOT for his debut appearance, ready to discuss quite possibly the most heartbreaking casualty of the grunge era. The lush compositions and Willy Wonka inspired look of Jellyfish lacked only one thing: timing. Had they existed a few years earlier or later, the band’s trajectory may have been unstoppable. Instead, they got washed away by a sea of flannel and apathy. Is Jellyfish the baby we wish would come back? Stick around to find out.

Matthew Milligan is BACK…this time, to talk teen pop music, Radio Disney, and meta songwriting with “Potential Breakup Song” by Aly & AJ. | "F**k It (I Don't Want You Back)" by Eamon (f/Jim Logrando) | 25 May 2022 | 00:42:34
In the early 2000s, cussing was still considered shocking. Nowadays, everyone from toddlers to great-grandmas are dropping F-bombs and C-words like they aren’t even cusses. In 2004, Staten Island ho-wop singer Eamon knew that the days of having a hit song purely because of swear words were almost over, so he took a big swing and hit a homerun with “F**k It (I Don’t Want You Back)”. No matter how many bad words he based entire songs around after that though, he could never match the success again. This week, we’re joined by Jim Logrando to determine if we ourselves actually DO want Eamon and his filthy mouth back.

| "What's Up?" by 4 Non Blondes (f/Jonathan London) | 18 May 2022 | 00:40:17 | |
This week’s episode was recorded live during a charity livestream on the Geekscape YouTube channel. We’re joined by Geekscape founder Jonathan London to discuss “What’s Up?” by 4 Non Blondes, a polarizing song that either has you plugging your ears or screaming along. The band’s career might have been short-lived, but lead singer Linda Perry’s songwriting career has been a beautiful party. Should 4 Non Blondes have took a deep breath, got real high, and made another album though? We figure out what’s going on in this episode.

One Hit Thunder producer Matt Kelly has brought up the band Flobots on several occasions on the show, so it was only right that an entire episode was finally dedicated to their 2008 single “Handlebars”. What lyrically starts as basically “look ma, no hands!” turns into an epic commentary on power, corruption, and militarism. Today, we’ll dive even deeper into Flobots, and we’ll decide if we jumped the gun with the “one hit wonder” tag on a band that might still lead the nation with a microphone.

| "Flavor of the Weak" by American Hi-Fi (f/Tessa Markle) | 04 May 2022 | 00:37:56 | |
The turn of the century brought an explosion of music that combined pop sensibility with the spirit of rock. Bands like Sum 41 and Dashboard Confessional entered the mainstream and stayed there, building back catalogs of memorable songs and influencing young artists. Other groups - like this week’s artist American Hi-Fi - got lost in the shuffle. Today, we’re joined by Femme Regard co-host Tessa Markle to discuss whether American Hi-Fi should have been more than just the flavor of the week.
