Why film, tv, and commercial actors need to care about the video game strike with Zeke Alton & Sarah Elmaleh22 Aug 202400:29:56

Another strike? Whattt?? That’s right. Video game actors are standing up to big corporations and taking a stand for all of us. In an industry that makes more than sports and TV profits COMBINED, video game artists are continuously being neglected by one of the most lucrative industries in the country. As key figures in SAG-AFTRA negotiations, actors Zeke Alton and Sarah Elmaleh provide insights into the urgent need for AI protections including the unions main three concerns: consent, compensation, and transparency. They emphasize the risks of working on non-union projects during the strike and outline steps actors can take to protect their careers and their colleagues. I was blown away by the financial magnitude of the video game industry, and we get into why every actor needs to care about what is being fought for here. As a union, one genre’s win is a win for us all. The fight that we are having here will effect commercials, will effect theatrical, will effect film, and will effect us all. If you’ve been wanting to get involved and know more about why we’re striking, this is the episode for you.

Gabrielle is now my roommate and you can be sure to let Caleb and Corey know. No, but really, we have spent a LOT of time together recently and we wanted to sit down together and really get into how living with each other has given us brand new perspectives on the industry. We are going into how we view each other’s individual journeys, our varying audition experiences, and the realization that smaller acting roles can still significantly contribute to an actor's career. That’s right: we are in a market that now values career expansion over leveling up, and if you don’t know what we’re talking about, then listen through all the way to the end and you’ll know exactly what we are probably going to be seeing in 2024 and beyond. It even makes your job easier when you get auditions! But... there is SO MUCH content to watch these days, with streaming channels constantly sending out new series all at once, or networks introducing new shows and canceling them faster than the blink of an eye. 121. Bionic Actor & Disability Advocate Angel Giuffria07 Oct 202101:05:51
Angel Giuffria, bionic woman and disability advocate, can be seen on Chicago Med, FBI: Most Wanted, Snowpiercer, as well as on films such as The Tomorrow War. Today, she joins Sam to dissect her experience in the industry and the nuances of being an actor with a limb difference. Having been born with only one arm, Angel speaks about how her mom always taught her that what makes her different is actually her strength. She mentions the harm that came along with having such low visibility of disabled people in media when growing up, and how that translated into her believing she shouldn't take up too much space when acting on set. It wasn't until Director Martin Campbell made her a featured extra on the film Green Lantern that she began to see that she could (and should) take up space — that she could act in roles that had nothing to do with her disability. Angel also speaks about the how far commercials have come in regards to disability representation and just how far TV and Film still have to go. In terms of her acting career, Angel goes into depth about how her disability has shifted her casting type and how it even changed the framing of her headshots. She explains her feelings on abled actors portraying characters with disabilities, how to make stories more inclusive, the need to make sets and casting offices more accommodating to those with disabilities, her thoughts on being labeled "inspirational" for simply doing everyday tasks, the value of having disability consultants on set, and how the industry should work towards having more diversity across the board in every category. At the end of the day, we all love this industry and should want to open up opportunities for all actors of every community to be able to audition for any role. That love for what we do doesn't mean it's not a difficult industry to be in. While Angel has a Master's degree in Psychology, acting is what makes her heart whole and what she chooses to continue to pursue despite all of its ups and downs. When things get tough, she reminds us that we all just have to keep going and try to do the things that remind us why this is the thing we simply can't not do. 120. Decision Fatigue + Three Ways to Fight It30 Sep 202100:19:08
As actors, we have to make countless decisions every single day. How much energy will I give my day job today? What part of my career am I going to work on when I'm not auditioning? Should I reach out to my representation since I haven't heard from them in a while? The more obligations we have, the more decisions we need to make, and the more drained we become as the day goes on. If we're not careful about pacing ourselves through all of these little choices, we can easily become burnt out and not able to tackle the fun, creative acting decisions asked of us for auditions. In this week's episode, I talk about this exact problem. While there may not be a perfect system that permanently solves decision fatigue, I do have some tips that have helped me. I share my morning routine, how I've streamlined my audition process, and how I use any free time that I may have. I also discuss my "Someday, Maybe" list and how invaluable it has been in organizing all the little things that need to get done (Like uploading my auditions to Dropbox!). We'll always have decisions to make, but I hope that these tips can help give you the mental breathing room that they have given me in my day-to-day actor life. 119. What I Thought This Would Look Like...23 Sep 202100:14:22
This week, we tackle how this career is so different than what we could ever plan it to be. I go back to that young 22-year-old Sam who landed in Hollywood ready and willing to do anything to make my dream come true. I had a laser-sharp focus on all things acting, and I believed that all the issues I had with my body, finances, and emotional well-being would be resolved with booking that one job. Boy, was I wrong.  But 10 years later, things haven't turned out like I expected them to. Looking back, I never factored in Sam the human when I was making a plan for Sam the actor. Join me as I talk about all that was unexpected in these past 10 years, all that's still to come, and how no matter where we go, there we are. 216. Embracing Change: How to Transform the Rest of Your 2024 (Part 4)25 Apr 202400:20:49
In the final episode of the April series on the One Broke Actress podcast, we are focusing on looking back at all of our past goals and what we want to change going forward to get us closer to our ideal more. I’m going to introduce an equation to help you set up the next three months of your life, focusing on accomplishing and enjoying what's been done, the current vibe of 2024, and desires from an ideal morning exercise. This is going to involve selecting one area (health, finances, career, mindset, relationships, spirituality) to focus on for improvement. Choose something that actually works for you, that you will work towards, because we need to actually execute plans rather than merely discuss them. Put your plan into action!! And trust me, I know it’s hard. We get really honest about what I’ve been struggling with and want to change for the future: improving my mindset. I’m revealing vulnerabilities about trusting in my career and my struggles with self-doubt. But we are also going to take those feelings and outline specific goals to support my mindset, including limiting my daily tasks, spending time alone daily, and ensuring all other goals support my main focus. Hold me to it, and I’ll hold you to yours! What goal are you focusing on for the next three months of 2024? Season 8 Announcment16 Sep 202100:03:22
Season 8 is FINALLY on its way!! We have so many exciting things in store for this season that I am so glad to finally be sharing it with you all. We are shaking things up this time and have lots of changes coming your way. Instead of our usual 12 episodes that have a 1 hour+ episode structure with guests, this season I wanted to sit down and talk to you one-on-one. These new-and-improved Solo Sam episodes will be way shorter in length and let me chat with you about everything that's on my mind about the entertainment industry, what I've learned recently, and we will even have some Q&A's to answer whatever questions you have. We will also have professional guests that are not actors but still have things to share with the rest of us about the industry. But fear not!! We will still have plenty of acting guests in the season and long episodes, they just won't be the only thing to look forward to. As always, thanks for listening to the One Broke Actress podcast and I cannot wait to share everything that we have in store! -------- Want more? 213. How to Readjust Your Acting Career (Part 1): Reflecting on Goals & Celebrating Victories04 Apr 202400:23:28
We are going to do a little mini series for the both of April where we focus on resetting our goals and structuring routines. I’ve noticed and also felt the low morale we all have post-strike here in the entertainment industry, and I want to help us all get through it a little bit easier. I am going to empower you, yes you, to take charge of the areas of your life that you have influence over, not what is out of our control. Each week, I will ask you a weekly question to reflect and work on — each covering different aspects of life including financial, career, health, relationships, and mindset. I’m even going to get vulnerable and share my own reflections. Trust me, it’s so important to look back on your year while it’s happening rather than just when it is over, and make sure we are taking steps to find happiness within ourselves, even if the rest of the industry is full of chaos.
