Episode 236 – The ABCs of Disney: Things we like that start with the Letter T!The ABCs of Disney: Things we like that start with the Letter T!
Hey everyone, I’m Mike, she’s Sophie, that’s Brenda, and he’s Grogu, and we’re On the Road with Mickey! This is episode 236 and this week our feature topic is The ABCs of Disney: Things we like that start with the Letter T! In this episode, we continue our ABC series with the things that we like that start with the letter T! Here’s what we talked about:
Cheddar from the Big Cheese:
Sophie: Coming to Hollywood Studios in the Summer of 2025 – an all new Villains Show, featuring such villains as Cruella de Vil, Captain Hook, and Maleficent, among others! It will be where the Lightning McQueen Racing Academy is, so if you want to see that one last time, check it out before it closes on October 7th.
Mike: The 2024 Christmas season is arriving at Disneyland Resort beginning November 15th! Continuing through January 6th, 2025, there will be a lot of holiday fun to be had! Let us know if you are going to be there during that time, and tell us what it was like!
Brenda: On Disney Cruise Line news, bookings for the Disney Destiny will begin on September 12! The maiden voyage will be out of Port Everglades on November 20, 2025 for a four-night cruise. After the maiden voyage, the inaugural season will be four and five night cruises to the Bahamas and Western Caribbean. Every cruise will feature a stop at either Castaway Cay or Lookout Cay – and some will have both! Lastly, don’t forget about Cask and Cannon, the new pub inspired by Pirates of the Caribbean!
Kourtney offered up this delicacy: “Cheeseburger spring rolls!!! It’s a favorite in our house”
Sheila said: “Gaston’s tavern cinnamon rolls” and added a tip for us “I finally figured it out making with cake flour makes them so light and fluffy”
Friend of the show Cindy added her favorites: “I loved the Chicken and Waffles from the Honey Bee-stro (F&G) and the Red Wine Braised Beef Short Rib from Pastoral Palate (FOTA). The beef is probably the best savory dish I’ve ever had at a festival!”
Feature Topic: The ABC’s of Disney: Things we like at Disney that start with the letter T!
“”Why worry? If you’ve done the very best you can, worrying won’t make it any better.” – Walt Disney

At CommuniCore Hall, you can find the Macatizers Menu with four different types of Mac & Cheese!
Near Mission: SPACE is the Coastal Eats Menu, where Daddy can enjoy the Warm Water Lobster Tail with garlic butter.
In World Showcase there are a lot of options, of course, but one that piques my interest is in China, the Pan-fried Chicken Dumplings with house-made sweet and spicy sauce, and the Crispy Duck Bao Bun with hoisin sauce!
Lastly, don’t forget about our favorites in Canada: The Cheddar Cheese and Bacon Soup served with a pretzel roll and the Filet Mignon with mushrooms, Boursin Garlic & Fine Herbs mashed potatoes, and Boursin Garlic & Fine Herbs butter!

A little bit of Walt
“I like corn.” “When I was a kid, a book I read advised young artists to be themselves. That decided it for me. I was a corny kind of guy, so I went in for corn.” – Walt Disney

On the Road w/Mickey 225 – Where in the World is Sophie?

Episode 225 – Where in the World is Sophie?Where in the World is Sophie?
Hey everyone, I’m Mike, she’s Sophie, that’s Brenda, and he’s Grogu, and we’re On the Road with Mickey! This is episode 225 and this week our feature topis is Where in the World is Sophie? In this episode, Sophie is sharing a lot of photos and Brenda and I are trying to guess where they were taken! Here’s what we talked about:
Cheddar from the Big Cheese:
Brenda: Coming to Hollywood Studios this fall, “The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure”. This is a brand-new reimagining of the movie.
Mike: Over at Islands of Adventure, the new show “Hogwarts Always” castle projection show has started. One thing that is neat is that there are four different endings to the show, each one featuring a different house.
We had some listener feedback on our Instagram channel! This is from Pam, who writes: “I listened to the podcast yesterday and I started thinking of my magic places. Disney World is just my magic place…but my special places are just looking at/arriving at the beautiful castle, riding it’s a small world, riding Peter Pan (I love the classics), viewing the nighttime fireworks and music (can bring tears to my eyes), and getting that text message saying “your room is ready!”
Listener Feedback Disney Cruise Itineraries:
Donna writes: “As long as it is DCL it doesn’t matter.”
Sheila has some ideas on her top cruises: “12-Night Mediterranean with Greek Isles Cruise from Civitavecchia (Rome) ending in Barcelona; Or 9-Night Mediterranean with Greek Isles Cruise from Civitavecchia (Rome). My husband loves cruises but is very picky about where to go.
Friend of the show Chrissy writes that she has never been on a cruise and doesn’t know what itinerary she would want, but here’s what she added: “I know I want my first one to be a week long one and Disney.”
On YouTube, Pam writes: “I really enjoyed the info about Disney cruises. I had no idea there are so many international itineraries. I’m looking forward to checking them out online. Happy birthday Sophie.”
“There’s a great feeling of satisfaction in winning an award for a job well done, whether it be for winning a footrace, designing a rocket, or making a motion picture. Now, we haven’t done too well with the first two on the list, but pictures, that’s something else. No one person can take credit for the success of a motion picture. It’s strictly a team effort. From the time the story is written to the time the final release print comes off the printer, hundreds of people are involved – each one doing a job – each job contributing to the final product. And, if the picture wins an award, the feeling of satisfaction we were speaking of can rightfully be shared by each and every one.”- Walt Disney

Brenda:On the Disney Wish, one place I want to “investigate” for our listeners – of course, all in the name of research – is Inside Out: Joyful Sweets! We’re talking freshly made waffle cones, signature desserts based on each of the emotions (in cupcake form), and nearly 40 flavors of gelato and ice cream!
Sophie:Coming to Disney+ on Disney+ Day, which is September 8th, is a brand new original series, “Cars on the Road”. Featuring Mater and Lightning McQueen, the story is that they are traveling across the country to visit Mater’s sister back east! This looks to be a 9 episode series!
Mike:Lost a little bit in the headlines, August 1st, Coronado Springs Resort celebrated its 25th anniversary! The resort opened on August 1, 1997, and was our first Disney on-property resort that we stayed at back in 2007.
2) SpaceShip Earth “Fire of Library in Alexandria”
1) Water smell PoTC with the use of bromine
Brenda:
3) Avatar: Flight of Passage. When the banshee lands in the cave.
2) Mickey’s PhilharMagic – Be Our Guest scene with the desserts
1) Karamell Kuche smell
Honorable Mentions: The scents from the Polynesian Resort and the Yacht Club Resort.
Mike:
3) Original Soarin’ ride – the orange grove scene
2) The incredible smell of fresh popcorn at Town Square in the Magic Kingdom.
1) The smell of the rain on the pavement during Extra Magic Hours with the cooler evening temperatures.
Listener Interaction:
My sister Robin loved the scent at the Yacht Club when she came over to visit before they all headed home. She also loved the scent of sunscreen and laughed about Sophie’s infamous “cough syrup” drink. 🙂
John said he loves the smells at the Grand Floridian, at Basin at Disney Springs, and at the Riviera.
Cindy said Pop Century’s lobby, the Taj Mahal scene in Soarin’, and that water smell you encounter on all of the boat rides. I wouldn’t want that last one as a candle, but I definitely associate it with the parks.
Sandi loves the smell of fresh popcorn for the collectable popcorn buckets
“Animated picture-making is an expensive business. One wrong pencil line can cost hundreds of dollars. I can’t hold a pencil to the artists in my studio. I credit the success of my films to the teamwork in my organization.” – Walt Disney

This series takes place prior to the events of Rogue One, and focuses on Cassian Andor’s journey and the pieces that come into play that lead to the beginning of the rebellion! This is a 12 part series, and I know that Daddy and I are really excited about it! If you haven’t seen the trailer yet here is the YouTube link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cKOegEuCcfw
Mike: This is not Disney related, but On the Road with Mickey would like to extend their prayers to the family of Vin Scully, in my opinion the greatest sports broadcaster ever known, on his passing. He died on August 2nd at the age of 94. As someone said, he’s still calling games, but now he’s doing it for the Angels.

Sophie:Last Tuesday the 26th was the 70th (or is it 71st) Anniversary of the release of Alice in Wonderland. To commemorate the anniversary, Disney Artist and Historian Stacia Martin wrote a post on the Disney Parks Blog, along with an accompanying YouTube video, showing how to draw the Cheshire Cat.
Brenda: Late this summer, the Boardwalk Deli will open up at the location that used to be the Boardwalk Bakery. Featuring authentic delicatessen sandwiches, it will also have a lot of sweets to enjoy as well. No official opening date has been announced, but if you look at the calendar for the restaurant it shows operating hours starting on August 15. Also, it’ll be open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Episode 131 – Disney Legends!
Disney Legends!
Hey everyone, I’m Mike, she’s Sophie, that’s Brenda, and and he’s Grogu, and we’re On the Road with Mickey! This is episode 131 for July 25, 2022, and today our feature topic is Disney Legends! We’ve talked about Disney Legends previously. At the start of last year we talked about all of the Nine Old Men when Brenda joined us, and then later that year we talked about them some more when we looked at Fred MacMurray, Ub Iwerks, and Julie Andrews. Well, today we’re continuing our look by focusing on Mr. Dick Van Dyke, Roger E. Broggie, and the incomperable Lillian Disney! Grab your favorite beverage, sit back, and relax, and tell us in the comments below what you think! Here’s the rundown of what we talked about:
In the group, we asked what Wowza foods you’ve encountered at Disney. We had a great response! Check out the answers we received:
Sheila said “The salmon at the Hollywood Brown Derby in DHS . It was so tasty! The salmon was on a bed of rice in a pool of pesto; with a decorative piece of puff pastry.”
Chandler chimed in: “We were on our last day and our last quick service meal during our 3-day visit in Jan, 2020. We were tired, hungry, ready to end our day, and simply needed something to eat. We didn’t know anything about Satu’li Canteen, and just happened across it. This ended up being the absolute BEST meal we had. When we visit again in the future, Satu’li will most likely be in the MUST DO list.” – Chandler, from the picture it looks like the Combination Bowl: Grilled Beef & Chicken. Let me know if I’m wrong.
Chrissy added her favorites: “The Gray Stuff, Homecoming’s Deviled Eggs, Satuli’s former Family Platter which had a little of everything on it, and Space 220’s King Oyster Mushrooms.”
My sister Robin added her Wowza food: “The salad at Liberty Tree Tavern! Stephanie and I scarfed that down like it was manna from Heaven!”
Lastly, my friend Cindy added her pick: “It’s just a little dessert, but the 50th anniversary lemon chiffon at Sunshine Seasons is amazing and gorgeous!”
You can see some of the pictures that were shared with us over at the Facebook Group or you will also see some of them on our YouTube of the episode.
Feature Topic: A Look at Disney Legends!
This week on the podcast, we are taking another look at some of the incredible Disney Legends that have been selected over the years. Each of us has done our research on our pick and we are looking forward to sharing that with you. We hope you enjoy this as much as we do!
Brenda: Dick Van Dyke
Richard Wayne “Dick” Van Dyke was born December 13, 1925 (just 11 days before my daddy) in West Plains, Missouri. He is an American actor, producer, comedian and writer.
After serving in the Air Force during WWII, he and a friend formed a pantomime act, “The Merry Mules” and performed Laurel and Hardy-type performances in nightclubs across the country. He broke into television and in 1961 he was cast as comedy-writer Rob Petrie on the hit series The Dick Van Dyke Show.
Although the show was a huge success, Walt Disney had never heard of him. When casting for Mary Poppins, Dick’s name was suggested to Walt and after a private screening of an episode of The Dick Van Dyke Show, Walt chose him on the spot – no audition needed!
Dick Van Dyke, of course, played Bert the Cockney chimney-sweep/kite-peddler/sidewalk artist/one-man band in the 1964 Academy-Award-Winning film, Mary Poppins (a film in which Walt Disney devoted four years of his life to creating).
When Dick read the script, he decided he also wanted to play the part of the old bank chairman, Mr. Dawes. He told Walt, “I’d like to play Mr. Dawes – and I won’t charge you a nickel.” Walt said, “The price is right, but you’ll have to test for the part.” So, Dick went to the studio and did a screen test as doddering old Mr. Dawes, long white beard and all. The actor improvised a slapstick scene of a wobble-kneed oldster descending the steps with a cane. Walt loved it so much he had a step added to the boardroom set so Van Dyke could do the bit in the movie.
Because of union rules, Dick Van Dyke wasn’t allowed to do the role for free – but Walt suggested an alternative. The Disney company paid Van Dyke $4,000 to play the part of Mr. Dawes, and the actor donated that amount to Walt’s favorite cause, CalArts.
Dick Van Dyke said those months he spent filming Mary Poppins were the happiest, most fun few months he had ever spent in his life. The best part was working with Walt. “What I liked about him”, Dick said, “was that he had the enthusiasm of a ten-year-old about the work. To work with him was one of the most serendipitous things that ever happened to me.”
Dick Van Dyke was inducted as a Disney Legend in 1998 under the FILM category. Alongside him as fellow inductees that year were: Kurt Russell, Roy E. Disney and a man named Paul Kenworthy (who I don’t know but I like his last name). lol
Roy E. Disney said of Dick Van Dyke, “Every time I see Mary Poppins, I’m amazed at how Dick’s brilliant performance effortlessly ties this film together. After all, it is Dick who first welcomes us to number 17 Cherry Tree Lane. It is his chalk pavement picture that provides entry into one of the greatest fantasy sequences of all time. And, it is Dick who bids Mary Poppins goodbye at the end of the movie.”
For many years after Mary Poppins, Dick Van Dyke had many roles in other Disney productions.
It was Dick who inducted Walt Disney into the American Television Hall of Fame in 1986. Joined on stage by Mickey and Minnie, he presented the award to Walt’s wife, Lillian.
Dick is also the voice narrating Walt: The Man Behind the Myth (and if you haven’t seen it, I HIGHLY recommend it).
Dick Van Dyke is now 96 years old. He celebrated his 90th birthday at Disneyland. The festivities included a parade down main Street, a flash mob performing “Step in Time,” the presentation of a silhouette of Bert dancing and all the guests of the park gathering to sing “Happy Birthday” to him.
In his personal life, Dick was married to Margie Willett from 1948 until they divorced in 1984. He married Arlene Silver in 2012 and they are still married. He has 4 children: Barry, Stacy, Carrie and Christian Van Dyke.
Every time I see him, I smile. He is playful, just a kid-at-heart. He is utterly charming and loves to entertain – especially making people laugh. He is still amusing us all, all these many, many years after he entered our hearts.
Mike: Roger E. Broggie
Roger E. Broggie was inducted as a Disney Legend in 1990. Born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts on October 22, 1908, Roger joined the Disney Studios in 1939 as a precision machinist. His initial assignments were to work on installing the multiplane camera at the new Burbank studio and working with Ub Iwerks on special effects. In 1949, though, Roger Broggie worked with Walt Disney to create model trains for Walt’s ½ mile long Carolwood Pacific Railroad located in the backyard of Walt’s home. He is credited with supervising the building of the Lilly Belle, a 1/8th scale miniature working live steam locomotive named after Walt’s wife, Lillian.
Roger Broggie is considered to be the first Disney Imagineer.
Roger was promoted to be the head of the Disney Studios Machine Shop in 1950, and he became the transportation specialist. He created the special effects for the film 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, and as they were working on Disneyland, he was in charge of development of the Santa Fe & Disneyland Railroad, the Disneyland Monorail, and the Matterhorn Bobsleds. He was instrumental in developing the mechanical aspects of all Disney attractions at Disneyland and Walt Disney World, including the Omnimover ride transit system, which he co-developed with Bert Brundage.
Roger and his machine shop co-workers developed the first fully functioning Audio-Animatronic human figure in 1963. Can you guess which character that was? Between 1973 and 1975, Roger Broggie worked on the EPCOT Center project at Walt Disney World.
Roger Broggie passed away at his home in Carmel, California on November 4, 1991. On October 21, 2003, Roger Broggie, Jr. and Michael Broggie, his children, rededicated the Walt Disney World Railroad steam locomotive No. 3 Roger E. Broggie in honor of their father. It was the fourth and final locomotive to be overhauled. Local trivia – it was overhauled at the Tweetsie Railroad in Blowing Rock, NC.
Lastly, on March 30, 2007, Roger E. Broggie was honored with a window on Main Street, U.S.A. at Disneyland. The text reads: “Can Do Machine Works / Mechanical Wonders / Live Steam Engines / Magical Illusions / Cameras / Roger Broggie, Shopmaster / Advisor to the Magic Makers”. He has also had a window installed in Town Square at the corner of the Fire Station and Emporium. That one reads “Broggie’s Buggies / Roger Broggie, Wheelwright – Wagons – Surreys – Sleighs”
Sophie: Lillian Disney
Born Lillian Marie Bounds on February 15, 1899 in Spalding, Idaho.
Youngest of 10 children, her father died when she was 17.
After her high school graduation, she attended a year of business college before moving to Southern California in December, 1923. She lived with her sister Hazel.
Kathleen Dollard was hired in ink and paint to help with the Alice series, and Walt asked her if she knew anyone. She went to Lillian and told her “I have a job for you, but I am telling you about it on one condition: don’t marry the boss.” Lillian decided to go for it, and went to the studio for an interview. It was there that she met Walt for the first time, and recounted that he wasn’t wearing a suit. Rather, a brown coat, sweater, raincoat, and pants. One January 19, 1924, she got the job at 15 dollars a week…
Despite Kathleen’s warning, Walt quickly became enthralled with Lillian, offering to drive Lillian and Kathleen home on late nights. The thing of it is… Lillian lived closer to the studio, yet Walt always drove her home last.
It is also said that Lillian admitted once, “I was not very artistic at all, and I was not very good at inking and painting. Later, Walt made me his secretary, but I made too many mistakes when he was dictating. He always said I was so bad that he had to marry me.
And marry her, he did. On July 13, 1925, they were married at Lillian’s Brother’s home. It doesn’t say which one. But Lilly made her dress herself, and was given away by her uncle. They had two daughters, Diane Marie, and Sharon Mae. And like Lilly and her siblings, the two girls gave them 10 grandchildren.
She was credited with working on Plane Crazy, and her sister Hazel was recruited as the head of “Ink and Paint” after Lillian started working there.
He took her advice and didn’t name the famous mouse Mortimer.
He named one of his Disneyland railroad cars “Lilly Belle” in her honor.
And the paddle steamer replica at downtown Disney was named “The Empress Lilly” and was christened by Lillian herself.
In 1987, she pledged $50 million to the construction of the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles.
On December 15, 1997, Lillian passed away from a stroke, exactly 31 years after the death of Walt.
She was inducted into the Disney Legends in 2003 alongside Roy’s wife, Edna Francis Disney.
“As the original Mary Poppins budget of five million continued to grow, I never saw a sad face around the entire studio. And this made me nervous. I knew the picture would have to gross $10 million for us to break even. But still there was no negative head-shaking. No prophets of doom. Even Roy was happy. He didn’t even ask me to show the finished picture to a banker. The horrible thought struck me: Suppose the staff had finally conceded that I knew what I was doing.” – Walt Disney

Cheddar from the Big Cheese
Mike: The EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival runs from July 14 – November 19, 2022, and along with it, the Eat to the Beat Concert Series will run from July 14 – November 14, 2022. Each night will feature three performances at the America Gardens Theatre – 5:30 PM, 6:45PM, and 8:00PM. We’re sharing a link to the Disney page that will show the complete list of performers and their dates of performance, so check it out here: https://disneyworld.disney.go.com/entertainment/epcot/food-wine-eat-to-the-beat-concerts/
Sophie: We’ve talked before about the retheming of Splash Mountain at Disneyland and Walt Disney World. Well, recently it was announced that the ride will become Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, and will come to both Walt Disney World and Disneyland in late 2024!
Today for our feature topic, we are all going to talk about what we liked most about our recent trip to Walt Disney World. Since Sophie was the reason for the trip, I’m going to let her go first!
Sophie:
1) Having the On the Road with Mickey Meetup to ride the PeopleMover.
2) Being in the moment, especially at Epcot
3) Enjoying her time with McKinley and Aleyah
4) Also time at Hollywood Studios with Daddy.
5) Sophie’s Right of Passage at turning 21
Brenda:
1) Her time with her girls
2) Seeing the excitement of her girls seeing the characters again and them being able to ride the rides together instead of one with Mimi and one with Papi.
3) LOVED the Bread Pudding Challenge!!!! Also loved Liberty Tree Tavern where Cindy sat with them.
4) Meeting friends for the first time. Cassie & Sophie, Chris & Chrissy and their families
“I wanted something live, something that could grow, something I could keep plussing with ideas, you see? The park is that. Not only can I add things but even the trees will keep growing; the thing will get more beautiful every year. And as I find what the public likes—and when a picture’s finished and I put it out—I find out what they like, or they don’t like, and I have to apply that to some other thing; I can’t change that picture, so that’s why I wanted that park.” – Walt Disney

On the Road w/Mickey 126 – 5 Things we’re looking forward to!
13 Jun 2022

Episode 126 – 5 Things We’re Looking Forward To!5 Things We’re Looking Forward To!
Hey everyone, I’m Mike, she’s Sophie, that’s Brenda, and and he’s Grogu, and we’re On the Road with Mickey! This is episode 126 for June 13, 2022, and today our feature topic is 5 Things We’re Looking Forward To! Our trip is right around the corner, and we are looking forward to at least five things for our trip. Grab your favorite beverage, sit back, and relax, and tell us in the comments below what you think! Here’s the rundown of what we talked about:
Cheddar from the Big Cheese
Mike: According to Anika Noni Rose, who is the voice actor of Princess Tiana from Princess and the Frog, the re-imagined themeing of Splash Mountain will be completed in 2024 and will open at both Walt Disney World and Disneyland. Officially, Disney has not confirmed the timing for the renovation, but more information may be released at the end of the month.
Brenda: What a special moment at Walt Disney World. The resort welcomed several of the Special Olympics USA Games athletes to the Magic Kingdom. They were celebrated as honorary grand marshals in a parade down Main Street, U.S.A. The Special Olympics games this year are in Orlando, with the majority of the events being held at the Wide World of Sports complex. There’s an awesome YouTube video about it in the show notes, check it out: Disney World Welcomes Special Olympics Athletes With Glittering Parade | Walt Disney World Resort
Sophie: Coming to Disney+ on August 10th – “I am Groot!” This series of original shorts – five in all – will focus on Baby Groot. Vin Diesel, who is the voice of Groot in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, also will voice him for the series.
Sophie: Lastly, coming back to Walt Disney World starting June 29th – the Minnie Van Service! It is handled through the Lyft app and is only for transportation around the resort – it will not go to the airport at this time.
Chrissy added to our list of ways to stay cool at Disney. Here’s what she added: Neck wrap cooling towels, the big huge new hand fans, or a small one, tank tops, get one of the insulated tervis style canteens or cups filled with ice, stay cold all day even in hot vehicles. When entering the park, walk through the long street stores in the AC instead of the main street to stay cool. Biggest mistake constantly made: DO NOT wear spirit jerseys during the months of April thru mid December, people wear them then complain it’s so hot. January/ February is the best time for those. If you start to get overheated, ask for ice water and take an ice cube. Place it on your wrist to bring your body temperature down to.
Feature Topic: 5 Things We’re Looking Forward To!
Brenda:
5) Getting to celebrate Sophie
4) Sharing time with her family
3) Spending time with Good Friends and meeting one of her clients for the first time! Cassie and Sophia
2) Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind!!!!!!!!!!!!!
1) Looking forward to R&R at the Yacht Club!
Sophie:
5) Getting my next pair of ears for her collection.
4) Riding Splash Mountain some more
3) Trying the Bread Pudding at ‘Ohana and Raglan Road with Brenda
2) Riding Guardians of the Galaxy with Aunt Robin and Aunt Brenda
1) The On the Road with Mickey Meetup!
Mike:
5) Staying at the Yacht Club
4) On the Road with Mickey Meetup
3) Seeing our friends at Disney and meeting new friends
“The idea of Disneyland is a simple one. It will be a place for people to find happiness and knowledge. It will be a place for parents and children to share pleasant times in one another’s company; a place for teachers and pupils to discover greater ways of understanding and education. Here the older generation can recapture the nostalgia of days gone by, and the younger generation can savor the challenge of the future.” – Walt Disney

Episode 224 – Top 5 Disney Cruise Itineraries!Top 5 Disney Cruise Itineraries!
Hey everyone, I’m Mike, she’s Sophie, that’s Brenda, and he’s Grogu, and we’re On the Road with Mickey! This is episode 224 and this week our feature topis is Top 5 Disney Cruise Itineraries! In this episode, we are sharing our favorite itineraries for Disney Cruise Line cruises. Some of these are realistic, and some of them are bucket list items (I’m looking in the mirror for that!) Here’s what we talked about:
Cheddar from the Big Cheese:
Sophie: Coming to the big screen next month: The Lion King! The original from 1994 is being re-released to celebrate its 30th anniversary! It arrives in theaters starting July 12th.
Brenda: The incredible Disney Legend Dick Van Dyke just became the oldest Daytime Emmy winner – at the young age of 98!
Mike: Disney has welcomed its first guests to Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point, Disney’s newest private island!
James, Lawrence, Louis – The Princess and the Frog
A little bit of Walt
“Disneyland is like Alice stepping through the Looking Glass; to step through the portals of Disneyland will be like entering another world.” – Walt Disney
Coming Next Week: Where in the World is Sophie?

On the Road w/Mickey 125 – Staying Cool at Disney!

Episode 125 – Staying Cool at Disney!Staying Cool at Disney!
Hey everyone, I’m Mike, she’s Sophie, that’s Brenda, and and he’s Grogu, and we’re On the Road with Mickey! This is episode 125 for June 6, 2022, and today our feature topic is Staying Cool at Disney! Summer is here, even if it’s not here officially, and these tips will help you stay cool while at Disney. Grab your favorite beverage, sit back, and relax, and tell us in the comments below what you think! Here’s the rundown of what we talked about:
Cheddar from the Big Cheese
Mike: Coming to The Mandalorian, Season 3 – which, by the way, will be released in February, 2023! – the fan favorite character Babu Frik from Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker – will be appearing at some point during season 3! I don’t know about you, but that is so intriguing to me. Absolutely one of the most poignant moments in any of the Star Wars movies was C3P0 looking around one last time “Taking one last look…at my friends” before his memory was wiped. I don’t know about you all, but my eyes kept leaking at that scene for some reason.
Brenda: Speaking of food – wait, were we speaking of food? – no, oh well, no matter, we are now! Hoop Dee Doo Revue is reopening on June 23rd! You can make dining reservations now for June 23rd and later now, so have at it!
Sophie: Disney+ Day is returning again this year on September 8th. Premerieng on the streaming service that day is the Live-Action Movie, Pinocchio! Here’s the Teaser Trailer of the show if you want to watch it: Pinocchio | Teaser Trailer | Disney+
Now that the calendar has flipped over to June, as far as I’m concerned, summer has arrived. For June, July, and August, the average high temperature is 90 and 91 degrees. With that in mind, this week we are taking a look at some of the ways that we can beat the heat at Walt Disney World during the summer months. Listen to our suggestions and let us know what we missed!
Our tips for staying cool at Disney:
Utilize a hand-held fan – Sophie uses a Chinese fan that opens and closes as she needs and it works well for her!
Misting Fan – battery powered and has water for misting to cool you off as well.
Wearable Neck Fans
Get to the parks early
Take advantage of the water rides. Splash Mountain, Kali River Rapids, Pirates of the Caribbean (depending on where you sit)
Stay hydrated! Carry your bottle of water, and ask for free ice water at locations in the parks.
Indoor attractions, located throughout all of the parks. Some examples: Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion, Hall of Presidents
Eat a Mickey Premium Ice Cream Bar!!!!
Ice Cream Cookie Sandwich with Mint Chocolate Ice Cream
Banana Split
“Pool Time is the Best Time when it’s hot!” said Brenda
Browsing the stores to get out of the heat.
Find a good place to sit
Don’t forget a hat to wear!
Sunscreen
Moisture wicking clothing
Put up with it and embrace the rain
Cold washcloth to put on your neck to keep you cool
Cold Water Bottle but use the condensation in the same way as the washcloth
Go in the morning, leave in the heat of the day, come back later
The Splash zones in the water shows, specifically World of Color
Not for everyone, but consider flip flops for your feet.
“I don’t pose as an authority on anything at all, I follow the opinion of the ordinary people I meet, and I take pride in the close-knit teamwork with my organization.” – Walt Disney

Episode 124 – You’re In Charge at WDW!You’re In Charge at WDW!
Hey everyone, I’m Mike, she’s Sophie, that’s Brenda, and and he’s Grogu, and we’re On the Road with Mickey! This is episode 124 for May 30, 2022, and today our feature topic is a fun one! You’re In Charge at WDW — 3 Changes You’ll Make! We have been given the keys to the Kingdom, so to speak, and we’re each giving three things that we would change. Grab your favorite beverage, sit back, and relax, and tell us in the comments below what you think! Here’s the rundown of what we talked about:
Cheddar from the Big Cheese
Sophie: The Tumbling Monkeys are returning to Festival of the Lion King! They will be returning on July 16th, so unfortunately after our trip, but we are very excited for all of you that are able to enjoy seeing them in person!
Brenda: Are you looking to plan your trip to Walt Disney World for 2023? Well, Mike and I are pleased to let you know that pricing for 2023 vacations will open up on June 8th! We’d love to help you with your trip. We have a quote request form here on the website, you can select either of us to submit your quote request to, or you can email me at brenda@pixievacations.com or Mike at mike@pixievacations.com and we’ll start the conversation that way. Thanks!
Mike: Our record date for the podcast this week is on May 25th. That is my sister’s wedding anniversary, so happy anniversary to Robin and Jim! Unfortunately, though, that wonderful celebration of their love for each other is tempered by what happened in Uvalde, Texas, yesterday. In the aftermath of such senseless, tragic loss, there is a lot of sadness, a lot of anger, a lot of calls for change to prevent something like this from happening again. We’re not going to get into the details here because we don’t know how many young ones listen to the show and you can learn all you need to know about it from other avenues. We don’t have the answers here, nor do we pretend to have them, but you should know this. Brenda, Sophie, and I, and millions of other people are doing the only thing we can do in the face of unspeakable evil – we are praying. Praying for God to comfort those families; praying for God to provide His Strength to all of us; praying for God to send His Peace upon us all; and praying for God to bring His swift justice upon those that would harm. At the end of the day, prayer is our most important tool, and we utilize it day in and day out. Now, we are led to carry on in the best way we can, and that means trying to bring you an entertaining show to provide some comic relief from a chaotic world, so let’s do just that!
Feature Topic: You’re In Charge at WDW – 3 Changes You’ll Make!
Sophie:
1) Bring back the Animation Academy!!!
2) Revamp the Canada Pavilion and add a New Zealand Pavilion
3) Add a Wall-E attraction to Tomorrow Land
Brenda:
1) BRING BACK THE OSBORN FAMILY SPECTACLE OF DANCING LIGHTS!!!!!!!
2) Bring back the Magical Express
3) Bring back Year of a Million Dreams and Extra Magic Hours for every resort guest!
Mike:
1) Bring Back Paper FastPasses!
2) Double-Decker bus and Street Performers in World Showcase
3) Bring Back Mickey & Minnie’s Country Houses
Listener Feedback:
My wife Cindy added her list of things she would change: 1) Bring back the Main Street Bakery the way we remember it; 2) Bring back the Design my Virtual Roller Coaster; and 3) Extend the Skyliner.
Chris has his list of 3 things he’d change: 1) Bring back the Sorcerer of the Magic Kingdom game; 2) I’d bring back the days where characters would walk around the parks to allow magic moments in pictures. 3) I’d lower pass prices to help passholders keep affording trips to enjoy their happy places at Disney.
Chrissy has her changes as well that she’d change: 1) Bring back the Sorcerer game update version. 2) Dining plans and not just for hotel guests, ap holders get to buy them to and ticket guests for the day. 3) Change the Prices for specials over next couple years to 1980, 1990, and 2000 prices for promotional themes Throughout the year at various hotels. With AP holders getting rates pre 2014 prices.
My friend Cindy has her list of things she’d change: 1) Bring back any time park hopping (not just after 2pm). 2) Bring back evening EMH for ALL resort guests, not just deluxe. 3) Find a way to limit how many of each item people buy. I know they have rules, but the resellers find a way around it. This way new, special merchandise will be available to everyone for a longer period of time before it sells out.
Here is what Heidi would change: 1) Bring back the dining plan and offer free dining at off times. 2) Stop charging extra for every little thing (and don’t charge for resort parking!) 3) I agree with Cindy on her #3.
Lee has a list of things he would change: 1) Go back to having each resort individualized instead of having one mug for all, as an example. 2) Manage reservation systems better so no one has to spend their vacation fighting constantly on their phone just to eat or enjoy an attraction. 3) Prices will never be dropped, but release more special promotions and deals, like on par ticket pricing for foreign visitors.

In addition, the project is being combined with other zoos and wildlife centers across the country in order to measure and ensure that the rhinos get the best care possible. If you want to learn more, check out this YouTube video: (2) Disney Takes Rhino Care One Step Further | Walt Disney World Resort – YouTube

“Ever since the beginning of wisdom, man has been fashioning a brighter light and a stronger glass to help him probe deeper and deeper into the marvels of nature’s secret world. Today, with the modern microscope, we can peer into dark corners we’ve never seen before. Often we can’t explain what we see, but just looking is always a dramatic and thrilling experience.” – Walt Disney

Fingers crossed!

“But the most exciting and by far the most important part of our Florida project… in fact, the heart of everything we’ll be doing in Disney World… will be our Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow! We call it E.P.C.O.T. E.P.C.O.T will be an experimental prototype community of tomorrow that will take its cue from the new ideas and new technologies that are now emerging from the creative centers of American industry. It will be a community of tomorrow that will never be completed, but will always be introducing and testing and demonstrating new materials and systems. And E.P.C.O.T will always be a showcase to the world for the ingenuity and imagination of American free enterprise. I don’t believe there’s a challenge anywhere in the world that’s more important to people everywhere than finding solutions to the problems of our cities. But where do we begin… how do we start answering this great challenge? Well, we’re convinced we must start with the public need. And the need is for starting from scratch on virgin land and building a special kind of new community. So that’s what E.P.C.O.T is… an experimental prototype community that will always be in a state of becoming. It will never cease to be a living blueprint of the future, where people actually live a life they can’t find anywhere else in the world. Everything in E.P.C.O.T will be dedicated to the happiness of the people who will live, work, and play here… and to those who come here from all around the world to visit our living showcase. We don’t presume to know all the answers. In fact, we’re counting on the cooperation of American industry to provide their best thinking during the planning and creation of our Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow…. And most important of all, when E.P.C.O.T has become a reality and we find the need for technologies that don’t even exist today, it’s our hope that E.P.C.O.T will stimulate American industry to develop new solutions that will meet the needs of people expressed right here in this experimental community.” – Walt Disney

Episode 119 – How Changes in Technology have changed the ridesHow Changes in Technology have changed the rides
Hey everyone, I’m Mike, she’s Sophie, that’s Brenda, and and he’s Grogu, and we’re On the Road with Mickey! This is episode 119 for April 25, 2022, and today our feature topic is How Changes in Technology have changed the rides. We’re taking a look at the attractions at Disney and are thinking about how those attractions have changed over the years. Grab your favorite beverage, sit back, and relax, and tell us in the comments below what you think! Here’s the rundown of what we talked about:
Cheddar from the Big Cheese
Brenda: Over at Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, the team has revealed their list of six songs that will be part of the experience. They are:
“September”
“Disco Inferno”
“Conga”
“Everybody Wants to Rule the World”
“I Ran”
“One Way or Another”
You won’t know until your ride starts which one you’ll get.
Sophie: Over on the west coast, Disney’s California Adventure welcomed World of Color back this past Friday, April 22nd. Everyone that’s listened know that I love that show, and I’m glad to hear it’s back now!
Mike: Disney has released the second trailer for the movie Lightyear, which is the origin story of Buzz Lightyear. The trailer is good and I think the movie will be too! It premieres on June 17th.
Feature Topic: How Changes in Technology have changed the rides.
When Walt Disney World first opened, there were set ways that rides were developed. In some cases, rides were imported from other places – a key example I’m thinking about in this case is how the Prince Charming Regal Carrousel was built in 1917 by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company. Before it ended up at Walt Disney World, it enjoyed runs at Belle Isle Park in Detroit, Michigan, and then Olympic Park in Irvington, New Jersey, before being bought by Disney in 1967.
Many of the early Disney attractions focused on how the Disney Imagineers would take common items and put them to extraordinary use in making a ride “come to life”. Some key examples are the use of mirrors in The Haunted Mansion and the use of lights and colored paper to give the illusion of fire in Pirates of the Caribbean. However, all of these early concepts still revolved around mechanical rides that didn’t vary from one ride to another.
With the advancement of computers, though, that changed how rides could be designed and how the technology really changed how attraction junkies like us were able to experience the rides. That’s what we are going to talk about today – how those rides revolutionized the way we think about rides.
The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror
Star Tours
Toy Story Mania
Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway
Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure
Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run – Hondo Ohnaka Audio-Animatronic
“The way to keep children out of trouble is to keep them interested in things. Lecturing to children is no answer to delinquency. Preaching won’t keep kids out of trouble. But keeping their minds occupied will.” – Walt Disney
(This reminds me of what I heard growing up “Idle minds are the devil’s workshop.”)

This is episode 118 for April 18, 2022, and today our feature topic is The Dining Reservation I’m most looking forward to. We’re taking a look at reservations at Disney and are thinking about those reservations that you just have to have, and can’t wait to get one day. Grab your favorite beverage, sit back, and relax, and tell us in the comments below what you think! Here’s the rundown of what we talked about:
Cheddar from the Big Cheese
Sophie: Giancarlo Esposito, also known as Moff Gideon in The Mandalorian, teased us with a possible season 3 opening date sometime this summer! No official date is released, but can you imagine if it were to come out, say, July 1st? Wow!
Sophie: Also, I know that we don’t talk about Bruno…but today, we’re going to talk about Bruno! The hit song from Encanto has become the best performing Disney song to date, beating out Elton John’s version of “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” from The Lion King in 1994. Also, Bruno spent five weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart! That’s phenomenal!
Brenda: Cast Member Previews for Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind begin today, April 18th, 2022!
Mike: On the Road with Mickey would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the family of Gilbert Gottfried. Known best in Disney circles as Iago in the movie Aladdin, he passed away at age 67 on April 12th. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, his children, and all those that knew him. All of us have been asked to please keep laughing as loud as possible in Gilbert’s honor.
Feature Topic: The Dining Reservation I’m most looking forward to…
Grogu: Looking forward to eating drinking at Oga’s Cantina
Sophie: Raglan Road at Disney Springs. For the June trip, looking forward to getting to ‘Ohana for dinner.
Brenda: The Chef’s Table Experience at Victoria and Alberts. Another on her list is Teppan Edo
Mike: Victoria and Alberts dinner for our 25th Anniversary. Also want to try Le Cellier in the Canada Pavilion.
Listener Feedback:
John is looking forward to eating at Whispering Canyon Cafe
Jen added her favorite: “I love Mama Melrose’s. I know it is a Disney Olive Garden, but I like it!!”
Chrissy said: “Space 220, Topalinos, and eventually I’d like to get Chris and Billy to want to try Mori’s”
Sandi chimed in with her favorite: “Liberty Tree Tavern … quiet and good food. We have lunch reservations. The other fav is Kona Cafe…good food and better coffee and the wait staff are always nice.”
Stephanie said “Boathouse brunch at Disney Springs, it’s the best!”
Cindy added her input: “The Rose and Crown for dinner to have a view of Harmonious. The California Grill.”
“While the rights and privileges of youth today are far greater than ever before, in entertainment as in other sides of their home and public life, it is still the parents who, in the main, decide what their growing youngsters may see on the screen. So it is the parents and other adult guardians of children’s welfare we must satisfy.” – Walt Disney

Planning a Solo Trip
Hey everyone, I’m Mike, she’s Sophie, that’s Brenda, and and he’s Grogu, and we’re On the Road with Mickey! This is episode 117 for April 11, 2022, and today our feature topic is Planning for a Solo Trip. Today we are joined by my friend Cindy from MonorailsandMagic.com. Grab your favorite beverage, sit back, and relax, and tell us in the comments below what you think! Here’s the rundown of what we talked about:
Cheddar from the Big Cheese
Sophie: In the Good News/Bad News Category – The premiere date for Obi-Wan Kenobi has been changed from Wednesday, May 25 to Friday, May 27, 2022. The good news, though, is that the premiere will feature the first TWO episodes! I think that’s worth the wait for two days.
Brenda: Starting April 18th, Character Meet and Greets – including hugs and autographs – will be returning to Disney locations! We’re talking Disneyland, Walt Disney World, Disney Cruise Line, and Aulani here! For openers it will be at select locations only but throughout the spring and summer more locations will be opening up.
Mike: Coming in July, the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival will be returning to Walt Disney World! The dates are July 14 – November 19, so there is plenty of time to enjoy this great festival. There will be more than 25 Global Marketplaces located throughout Epcot, and the Eat to the Beat Concert Series will be going on as well.
We are excited to introduce my good friend Cindy from MonorailsandMagic.com and her Facebook Group Disney Fun at Home. Cindy and I were part of the Magical Blogorail back in the day, so we’ve been friends for quite some time. Today, we are going to talk about planning a solo trip, as well as make sure that everyone understands some of the changes at Disney due to the pandemic. Welcome to the podcast, Cindy!
Benefits of Traveling to Walt Disney World Alone:
You get to do exactly what you want to do without having to worry about anyone else’s needs or wants. That is extremely difficult if you are visiting with other people, especially children.
You can approach the parks at your own pace. If you want to be there rope drop to closing, you can. If you want to sleep in and take your time, you can do that too. It is entirely up to you.
You are always a “single rider.” Not just on the rides that offer that feature. It’s not unusual to get your own row on a ride or even your own vehicle when it’s not very busy.
It is much easier to navigate through the crowds alone.
Things to Consider Before Booking:
This varies greatly, depending on your home situation.
If you are single or have no children, then it is much easier to plan.
If you do have children, you need to consider how much of a disruption your being gone will be and then work around that.
Solo Trips Are Not for Everyone:
If you are really uncomfortable doing things at home alone (shopping, eating out, etc.), then you may not enjoy a solo trip to Walt Disney World.
If experiencing things at the parks without your loved ones would make you sad, you may not enjoy this type of trip.
“Fantasy, if it’s really convincing, can’t become dated, for the simple reason that it represents a flight into a dimension that lies beyond the reaches of time.” – Walt Disney

That would keep you from adventuring into other fields. It’s silly to build a wall around your interests.” – Walt Disney

Hey everyone, I’m Mike, she’s Sophie, that’s Brenda, and and he’s Grogu, and we’re On the Road with Mickey! This is episode 114 for March 21, 2022, and today our feature topic is the Your Favorite Areas at Each Park! Each park at Walt Disney World has a different name for their specific areas. Some are called lands, some are neighborhoods, and so on. This week, we are looking at your favorite area in each park. Grab your favorite beverage, sit back, and relax, and tell us in the comments below what you think! Here’s the rundown of what we talked about:
Cheddar from the Big Cheese
Brenda: Disney announced recently that they are going to be making some changes to the Boardwalk area. The Boardwalk Inn is getting a reimagined lobby, and out on the Boardwalk itself, the Boardwalk Bakery will become a new sandwich shop. Also, The Cake Bake Shop by Gwendolyn Rogers, a new table-service restaurant and bakery, is set to open in 2023.
Sophie: More Star Wars news: we have been geeking out on Obi-Wan Kenobi trailers and YouTube videos. The series premieres May 25th, and everything about it really makes me ready for it to start!
Mike: The Starlight Safari Tour over at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge is set to return April 22nd! This 1 hour tour through the savanna areas of the Lodge costs $89 and you will be able to see up to 30 animal species with your night-vision goggles.
Lands, Pavilions, Neighborhoods, the names go on and on. Today we are taking a look at our favorite “areas”, for lack of a better term, in each of the parks.
Magic Kingdom:
Brenda: Liberty Square
Sophie: Liberty Square
Mike: Main Street, U.S.A.
Epcot:
Brenda: France Pavilion
Sophie: Japan AND Morocco AND France Pavilions
Mike: Mexico Pavilion
Hollywood Studios:
Brenda: Sunset Boulevard
Sophie: Sunset Boulevard
Mike: Galaxy’s Edge
Animal Kingdom:
Brenda: Pandora
Sophie: Discovery Island
Mike: Asia
Listener Feedback:
Cindy has these areas as her favorites: Let’s see… Epcot: World Showcase. MK: Tomorrowland at night. I’m honestly not sure about during the day. AK: Pandora. HS: It’s not one particular area, but I love the older areas.
Chrissy says these are her favorites: Magic Kingdom favorite part is Fantasyland due to the Beauty and Beast additions. Epcot: World Showcase and Living Sea Hollywood Studios: Galaxy Edge AK: Pandora
Pam includes several of her favorites: Great question! MK: Liberty Square. Epcot: The Living Seas and the World Showcase crawl. HS: Echo lake area. Looking forward to seeing Galaxy Edge this trip. AK: Africa. Safari, Gorillas, Festival of the Lion King show, and Tusker House breakfast. DS: original Pleasure Island Adventurers Club and Comedy Club.
Chris adds his favorites: For me, the magic kingdom was always Adventureland because Tortuga Tavern was my favorite hangout when sorcerer Mickey card game was happening – lots of good memories began there including the idea of Billy’s closet of magic. In Hollywood Studios it’s Galaxy’s Edge. In Animal Kingdom it’s Pandora and in Epcot the World Showcase for America where the concert series happens. Saw Rick Springfield and Foreigners Journey recently there and it was awesome!!!
“Today, modern ways have reached into nearly every corner of the globe. Yet in many lands, old and colorful customs continue, unchanged by time, undisturbed by the march of progress. As the past slips slowly but certainly into the future, these traditions of yesterday may soon be lost forever in all the tomorrows yet to come.” – Walt Disney

“Leadership implies a strong faith or belief in something. It may be a cause, an institution, a political or business operation in which a man takes active direction by virtue of his faith and self-assurance. And, of course, leadership means a group, large or small, which is willing to entrust such authority to a man – or a woman – in judgment, wisdom, personal appeal, and proven competence.”- Walt Disney

“The one thing I learned from Disneyland was to control the environment. Without that we get blamed for the things that someone else does. When they come here they are coming because of an integrity that we’ve established over the years, and they drive for hundreds of miles and the little hotels on the fringe would jump their rates three times. I’ve seen it happen and I just can’t take it because, I mean, it reflects on us. I just feel a responsibility to the public when I go into this thing that we must control that, and when they come into this so-called world, that we will take the blame for what goes on.” – Walt Disney

On the Road w/Mickey 222 – Remembering the Legends: The Sherman Brothers

Episode 222 – Remembering the Legends: The Sherman BrothersRemembering the Legends: The Sherman Brothers
Hey everyone, I’m Mike, she’s Sophie, that’s Brenda, and he’s Grogu, and we’re On the Road with Mickey! This is episode 222 and this week our feature topis is Remembering the Legends: The Sherman Brothers. In this episode, we are sharing our memories, favorite tidbits of information, and more about the Sherman Brothers after the passing of Richard Sherman on May 25th. Here’s what we talked about:
Cheddar from the Big Cheese:
The big story this week – and the reason for the change in topic – is the passing of Richard Sherman at the age of 95. Mr. Sherman is one of a songwriting duo – the Sherman Brothers – along with his brother Robert, that have given millions of fans enjoyable music to listen to for decades. Today, we remember two of the best Disney Legends out there, and this episode is a tribute from our hearts and yours to the Sherman family in their time of grief.
John has these favorite quick service restaurants: “Earl of Sandwich, Casey’s Corner, Pecos Bills, most of the kiosks during any of the Epcot festivals, and Columbia Harbour House. At AK love the Flaming Tree BBQ and Pizzafari maybe Restaurantosaurus. HS I like ABC Commissary, PizzeRizzo. I know this is more than 5, but wanted to list what I liked.
Chandler had this to add to the list that our friend Cheryl totally agrees with. Here’s what he wrote: “Satuli’s Cantina… Hands down a MUST go to whenever we’re in my favorite Park.”
Feature Topic: Remembering the Legends: The Sherman Brothers
Brenda:
My favorite song by the Disney Brothers is the same as for many people, “Feed the Birds.” I have some history on that if you wouldn’t mind me sharing?
Second to “Feed the Birds” is another song that has always been a huge part of the parks for me, “There’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow.”
The theme for Walt’s attraction, It’s a Small World is also one of my favorite songs by the Sherman Brothers. I have a bit of history on that one as well if I can share?
Mike:
Favorite Disney Song: Of course, I can’t just have one favorite…when it comes to the music that the Sherman Brothers created, I’m going to share two. Of course, so many like Feed the Birds (Tuppence a Bag), and I do as well. However, another song that I truly love is Let’s Go Fly a Kite. It’s a wonderful song that reminds us to not take life so seriously, to remember that amongst the work there HAS to be time for play as well, and in finding time to play, you may just notice that your troubles are left behind as well, at least for a little while. When Saving Mr. Banks came out, I came across this incredible pop-up video of this song that was performed outside the Odeon theater in London. It is such a cheerful, uplifting performance that I’ve just got to share it with you. Here’s the YouTube link and I’ll also share it in our On the Road with Mickey Facebook Group as well. Mary Poppins Lets Go Fly A Kite Fan Singalong
Incredible Memory – In 2015 we went to Disneyland for the Diamond Anniversary of Disneyland and Stephanie and Shane went with us (and baby Lindsay did also). While we were there, we were in line for Peter Pan’s Flight and Shane tapped me on the shoulder and pointed, and not five feet away was Richard Sherman walking through the park. I was so gobsmacked that I didn’t even think to take a picture, call out to him, jump out of line, or anything. Eventually I remembered to close my mouth.
Sophie:
Sophie loves the music of the Sherman Brothers; she gave some insight into the soundtrack and referenced the first song on the album “The Sherman Brothers Songbook”, which is Tall Paul, sung by Annette Funicello. That song was the first big break for the Sherman Brothers, and made it all the way to #7 on the charts!
Listener Feedback:
We did get a little bit of feedback from the listeners in the Facebook Group. Kim, Chris, Chandler, Patti, Teresa, and Kait loved that we changed the topic to a tribute. In addition, we had these two comments:
Sheila wrote: “Just like Walt Liked I love feed the birds”
Chandler wrote this tribute in the group: “No matter the interview, no matter the question, his voice was always full of joy. The stories I’ve heard from other friends who actually got to meet him make me think he wanted to be your friend from the moment he met you. That’s the kind of person I want to be.”

Update from Last Week:
We discussed the Country Bear Jamboree last week, and in it, I learned that I would be Big Al if I were a character on the show. I asked in the FB Group which character you would be, and the race is close between Trixie and, yes, you guessed it, Big Al! As of right now, though, the leader is Trixie!
Also, I asked what is on your list to do in 2022, and you responded!
Sheila said: “Festival of the Arts. I have never done it and it looks amazing.”
Ivon said: “To go on a Disney Cruise! That’s on my Disney Bucket-list.”
Pam said: “Dawn of Life, Cirque du Soleil on March 26th. (During Flower and Garden festival).”
Jenifer said: “Savi’s, the fireworks shows, and Ratatouille are this year’s hope. We did COVID Disney for our first Disney and they weren’t happening so we never did the parks in the dark. Want to do a cruise some time but…”

Sophie: Over at Animal Kingdom, Lola, one of the white rhinos there, gave birth to a healthy and adorable female calf in early November, and the Disney Parks Blog released information and pictures about her recently. She is the third white rhino born at Animal Kingdom park in the past 13 months, and the 13th white rhino born at Walt Disney World Resort!
Brenda: Are you going to be at Walt Disney World anytime between December 22nd and 31st? If so, one special occurrence is that Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmastime Parade, which had only been performed during the Very Merriest After Hours Party, is now being shown twice daily at the Magic Kingdom during these days! Looks like the times are generally at Noon and 3:45PM or 3:30PM depending on the day.
Mike: An alternative to the Mears Connect service bringing guests from Orlando International Airport to Walt Disney World was just announced! It is called The Sunshine Flyer, will be starting on February 1, 2022, and the buses are themed like trains! Prices are $17 per adult, $12.50 per child each way.
Mike: Bonus cheddar! Re-opening on March 31, 2022, Disney’s All Star Sports Resort! This means that come March 31, all of the Disney resorts will be open for the first time since 2020!
“But now, looking back, I have satisfaction, even pleasure, in tracing the effects those newspaper-delivery days had on my mature life. Now I can appreciate the self-reliance, self-discipline, and self wisdom gained from those responsibilities. The sense of responsibility — yes, this I believe is the most valuable thing a boy can carry along into later life from his first job.” – Walt Disney

“If I were a fatalist, or a mystic, which I decidedly am not, it might be appropriate to say I believe in my lucky star. But I reject ‘luck’ – I feel every person creates his own ‘determinism’ by discovering his best aptitudes and following them undeviatingly.” – Walt Disney

Mike: Over at Disneyland, Mickey’s Toontown is going to be reimagined with new experiences, more play, and interactivity for young families. This will be coming to Disneyland in 2023!
Sophie: Coming to Disney+ in 2023 — Tiana, a musical series where Princess Tiana is now the Princess of Maldonia!
Dapper Days are days at the Disney parks where you can dress up in retro outfits to give tribute to a particular era. For example, dress up in clothing reminiscent of the 40s or 50s.
Why does Disney have Dapper Days?
It’s not 100% known why they do it, but I think it is a way to have a day at Disney that is a throwback to another time. Almost like a way to remember what it would have been like to visit Disneyland in 1957 and see Walt Disney himself walking down Main Street, U.S.A.
When are Dapper Days for 2021 and 2022?
Walt Disney World, Saturday, November 20, 2021 at Epcot and Sunday, November 21, 2021 at the Magic Kingdom.
Disneyland, Saturday, April 23, 2022 and Sunday, April 24, 2022.
The last Dapper Days at Disneyland happened November 14th at Disneyland Park, with the Expo being the 13th and 14th at the Disneyland Hotel.
Walt Disney World, April 30 and May 1, 2022.
For more information on the whole Dapper Day background, go to dapperday.com
“To all who come to this happy place: welcome. Disneyland is your land. Here age relives fond memories of the past…and here youth may savor the challenge and promise of the future. Disneyland is dedicated to the ideals, the dreams and the hard facts which have created America … with the hope that it will be a source of joy and inspiration to all the world.” – Walt Disney

Brenda: As you all know, Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster at Hollywood Studios has been closed for a while – well, we have a reopening date to announce: July 27th! Fans of the ride will be able to once again rock and roll!
Mike: One of the most enduring legacies of Walt is his love of animals and conservation. That’s what makes Animal Kingdom Park such a special place, because of how they are helping out endangered species. There are over 300 species of animals at Animal Kingdom park, and eight of them are endangered. They are the Painted Dog, African Elephant, Western Lowland Gorilla, Komodo Dragon, Okapi, Giant Galapagos Tortoise, Sumatran Tiger, and Vietnam Pheasant. Be on the lookout for them when you are next at Animal Kingdom!
Debbie had this excellent advice: “Using the services of a Fantastic Travel Advisor – ,choosing the right resort that best fits the needs of my family, asking Mike all the crazy questions and then setting our minds to taking everything that comes our way. There is Disney Magic everywhere. You just need to let it in.”
Cindy H. had some advice as well: “Definitely a mid-day resort break to swim or nap. Trying to go open to close is going to wipe you out.”
Chrissy from BCOM said “Sophie don’t forget the wrist cooling trick, cooling towel, frozen water bottle if you have a freezer in your room, tank tops, lots of tank tops.”
Stephanie said: “Two words. Ponchos and patience.”
Lastly, Lee said: “I like to schedule easy days so it all feels like a vacation and not a rush from ride to ride. Pool days or boat days/resort hopping can be a nice break. ”

Updates from last week:
Boo Bash Feedback from the Group
We asked in the group if people had gone to the Boo Bash and if so, what were your thoughts about it. Here is the feedback we received:
Cindy wrote in with this feedback: “My family of 4 attended in late August. My husband and teen boys have done an after hours event but not a MNSSHP. I have. So they had no preconceived notions about what a Halloween event at Disney should be like. They are not really into parades and whatnot, so we basically went for the low wait times. If that is what you are after, then Boo Bash is worth every penny. We basically walked on everything. I think our longest wait was 15 minutes and that was for Mine Train. BUT if you love all of the parades and fireworks and stage shows that normally come with MNSSHP and you don’t really care about rides, then you will probably be disappointed.”

Brenda: The Epcot International Festival of the Arts is scheduled for January 14 – February 21, 2022! Have you ever been to the festival?
Mike: Reopening information and dates! Over at Animal Kingdom, the Tam Tam Drummers of Harambe are returning on November 7th! Over at Hollywood Studios, the Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular is returning on December 19th! Also, Disney Movie Magic is set to return in November, along with Meet Disney Junior Pals and Minnie Starring in Red Carpet Dreams!
Sophie: On October 25, in addition to that being the day that the Dedication Ceremony for Walt Disney World occurred in 1971, it was also the day that the Electrical Water Pageant at Walt Disney World premiered!
“I think of a newborn baby’s mind as a blank book. During the first years of his life much will be written on the pages. The quality of the writing, whatever it be, will affect his life profoundly. Let us multiply that single mind by millions. What is written on that enormity of youthful minds will alter the course of the world. This is how history is determined. It is self-evident to anybody who studies the history of the human race.”- Walt Disney

Halloween at Disney!
Hey everyone, I’m Mike, aka Tweedle Dum, she’s Sophie, aka Cruella, and that’s Brenda, aka Wench for a Day, and we’re On the Road with Mickey! This is Season 2, Episode 43 for October 25, 2021, and our feature topic is Halloween at Disney! Have a listen, and let us know in the comments what you think! Now, here’s the rundown of what we talked about:
Updates from last week:
Talking about Disney Genie — the Genie is out of the bottle!
We put a poll up in the group about whether people were more interested in Genie+ or the free version of Disney Genie. The winner was the Genie+! Despite the cost, more people were interested in it. Some good feedback as well:
Pam wrote in: “Good question!! Want to know which rides are available before making the decision. I feel like I am Disney Genie: planning, asking others, reorganizing when new things come out, and I enjoy doing it.”
Sandi is going to play the wait and see game — smart strategy, Sandi! “We don’t arrive til December so we’re going to wait and watch, then decide which works for us.”

Sophie: On October 16, 1923, Walt Disney and his brother Roy founded the Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio in Hollywood, California. The studio is now known as the Walt Disney Company. 98 years later, on Instagram, Disney Animation announced that the 60th animated motion picture is going to be named Encanto! Check out the video here on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tv/CVGG5QTN-CE/
Brenda: My favorite Moderate Resort has reopened! Disney’s Port Orleans Riverside, and people are loving being back there! Yehaa Bob is back performing at the River Roost, too! Also, the Candlelight Processional is back, and so will be dining packages for the show! Starting tomorrow, October 26, 2021, you can make reservations at Biergarten, Coral Reef, Garden Grill, or Rose & Crown for your meal before the show with preferred seating for the show.
“Educational films will never replace the teacher. The three R’s are basic (reading, ‘riting, ‘rithmetic), but their advancement by means of the motion-picture screen will give more people in this world an opportunity to learn. Pictures can make both teaching and learning a pleasure. And educators agree that when a student has begun to learn and like it, half their problem is solved.” – Walt Disney
