Another August has almost passed, and the Front Porch team has wrapped up another incredible weekend at Boots and Hearts 2024. This year, Lily took charge, connecting with many of the artists who graced the stage and handling all our social media content.

Lily got Alee to rank her own music (a tough ask, like picking a favourite child!), while Shantaia shared her experiences of singing in a hockey arena. The Hunter Brothers had us laughing as they confessed the “Golden Rules” they can’t seem to follow. Nate Haller talked about everything from camping to life on the road, and Dayna Reid revealed one of the weirdest jobs she’s ever had.

We also caught up with Brian John Harwood, Alexa Goldie, Kalsey Kulyk, and more, making this year’s Boots and Hearts another one for the books.

Celebrate The Moments with Nice Horse30 Apr 202400:45:10

Send us a text

This week on the podcast we have the busiest touring band that we are aware of in Canada ... the country duo Nice Horse.

Brandi and Katie, otherwise known as Nice Horse, joined us ahead of the release of their self-titled album.

We started with talking about our morning routines ... and teetered on the edge of becoming a beverage podcast. But once we were all well caffeinated (except for Katie ... she somehow doesn't drink caffeine) we dug in to the music.

Katie and Brandi have been friends for years.

Bonded through their love for music and writing, these two exude passion and it remains the pillar in the band. This band has gone through a couple of evolutions, but it all led them to this point. The release of their album.

We hope you love this episode as much as we loved recording it.

Aaron Goodvin’s latest single “Written All Over It” is his first release of 2024. We had Aaron “On The Porch” to dive into his career so far.

Long before “Lonely Drum”, “Lucky Stars”, and “Boy Like Me”, Aaron was cutting his teeth as a songwriter. Some of his songs have been released by Luke Bryan, Cole Swindell, and Jon Pardi.

Aaron recently won two Country Music Association of Alberta (CMAB) Awards for Male Artist of the Year and Single of the Year (Country Dance). In our chat, Aaron talked about the value of the CMAB community and continuing to participate.

He also talked about investing in emerging talent. As an artist whose path wasn’t always easy, he feels it’s important to be there to support young artists, answer those questions they have, and help them navigate their careers.

We also made sure to ask Aaron his favourite colour - but you’ll have to listen to find out what that is!

Amy Hef is a pop-rock turned country artist based in Calgary, Alberta, however we learned this episode, she’s originally from Saskatchewan!

Originally a drummer, Amy tourned North America in a Christian rock band. She went to Los Angeles for music school, and wrote albums of pop rock music with her brother.

Covid sent her home to Alberta after years in the sun, where she met a manager and started to explore her roots in country music. She nods her head to the community of country music she’s been able to be part of over the last few years.

It turns out Amy is related to not only Lisa Leblanc, but Madonna?

Amy is a first time mom - to twins! She has learned that babies need you ALL THE TIME.

"I Hung Up On Aaron Pritchett" with Zach McPhee20 Feb 202400:42:37

Send us a text

Zach McPhee grew up in Kelowna, British Columbia with his eyes set on a career in hockey. He grew up in a musically inclined family, with both parents and his brother playing guitar, piano and singing. This was easily passed along to Zach.

He first started singing as therapy for a speech impediment. Teammates from his hockey team happened to notice he was pretty good, created a YouTube account and started posting videos of him singing.

After years of writing, posting cover songs, and connecting with some folks in the local music community, Zach started working on music that would become his debut EP, Bring On, which he released in 2023.

Zach was featured on our annual Artists To Watch in 2023, alongside talented emerging Canadian artists. He is also a semi-finalist in this SiriusXM's Top Of The Country Contest.

“Well, are you going to quit?” With Meghan Patrick23 Jan 202400:50:53

Meghan Patrick is an 18x CMA Ontario winner and back-to-back CCMA Female Artist Of The Year. She made her Grand Ole Opry debut and released her latest EP Greatest Show On Dirt in 2023. Her latest single “The Other Side of 25” was just released this past Friday.

We sat down with Meghan for a vulnerable conversation about her time cutting it in the music industry. From playing in a funk band to playing cover songs in bars, to landing her debut at the Grand Ole Opry, Meghan has made a career of hard work and determination.

We talked about “The Other Side Of 25” and what that truly means to her. From difficult life lessons, to being a survivor of domestic abuse, working multiple jobs to live her dream, and all of the life experiences that have gotten her to where she is today.

She also shared her dedication to supporting survivors of domestic violence and her first philanthropy initiative she hosted in Nashville in partnership with the local YWCA.

Overcoming Shyness, Default, And His Fourth Album with Dallas Smith31 Oct 202300:44:02

Send us a text

Somehow we blinked and we’re at the season finale for Season 2 of On The Porch with Front Porch Music.

We’re so excited to have multi-CCMA award winning country artist Dallas Smith.

Dallas dove into music after overcoming his fear of singing in front of people. Within a year, he went from jamming in the garage with his band (Default) to having a record deal and hitting the road as a frontman.

Dallas grew up with two very musical parents, recalling his house filled with Reba, k.d. Lang, Martina McBryde, The Judds, Brooks and Dunn, Alan Jackson, and Vince Gill. While he was into the Beatles and Led Zeppelin, he credits his mom’s favourite music even in influencing Default’s music.

Dallas shared a lot about his journey and relationship with the music business, getting involved through management and Local Hay Records, and investing time in mentoring emerging artists.

Dallas shared the “country record?” text that set off his solo career, and the organic experience of finding his way into Canadian country music.

We also dive into his self-titled fourth studio album, Dallas Smith.

Genevieve Fisher first serenaded people at the tender age of two years old, when she sang “You Are My Sunshine” at the Ilderton fair. What would ensue as she grew up was a natural affinity for the stage and a passion for performance.

After over a decade in the world of Canadian country music, we sat down with Genevieve to talk about her journey.

RELATED: Genevieve was recently our Women in Country Spotlight artist ...

We dove into the world of radio and radio tours, writing music and finding inspiration at different stages of life, and her new single “Best Thing About The Rain”.

We even had a special appearance from Genevieve’s son, Harrison. She talked about how defining success has changed so much after having her son and the importance of making him proud.

The American Idol Circus with Brayden King16 May 202300:44:21

Send us a text

We're back with another episode of On The Porch with Front Porch Music. This week we had a chat with Brayden King.

He's a relative newcomer to the country music scene, but the last few months have been an absolute whirlwind for him. He joined us on the heels of competing on the biggest music competition shows - American Idol.

He made it to the top 55 of the competition and shared what that experience was like. We spent a lot of time talking about American Idol and the magic of everything you don't see behind the scenes.

Brayden joined us for a chat while he was taking a well deserved vacation. He was really forthcoming about what his experience as an artist has been like. From joining the music scene as a solo artist a couple years ago, to getting a DM from an American Idol casting director.

He has a new song out “Bad Night To Be A Beer” and it's a great new song that you're going to want to save to your playlists. He is set to make a splash on the scene and we can't wait to see where his career takes him.

Enjoy our chat with Brayden King!

Mark Ledlin is an athlete and an artist and he’s impeccable at both.

Starting his music career with an audition for The Voice Germany, Ledlin has now been named as one of the eight semi-finalists for SiriusXM’s 2023 Top of the Country contest in partnership with the CCMA. He was also one of our Artists to Watch in 2023.

From his missing tooth to breaking into the country music scene through TikTok, we had a lot to talk to Mark about!

RELATED: Have a listen to his debut single "Drink About Me" ...

We had Mark On The Porch to chat about these things, along with what it’s like growing up with sisters, how he manages creating music from Germany, and Boots and Hearts. If you don’t remember the Boots and Hearts takeover, he did the hot girl walk.

RELATED: He joined us after his performance at the Boots & Hearts Emerging Artist Showcase ...

We also ran through to talk about how he feels about playing at Sunfest Music Festival. But as a hockey player and a musician he’s been pretty busy, so we asked what he does to simply wind down and be in the moment!

Hailey Benedict is celebrating three CMAB Award wins just this past weekend along with successfully hosting the 2023 CMAB Awards show alongside Jojo Mason.

In March, Hailey was named one of the eight semi-finalists for the 2023 Top of the Country contest presented by SiriusXM in partnership with the CCMA. She also just recently arrived home from her first Canada-wide tour supporting Aaron Goodvin.

It’s safe to say 2023 is off to a hot start for Hailey Benedict, which also means, we had lots to catch up on!

We had Hailey On The Porch to chat about all of these things, along with her TikTok endeavors (have you seen her Thunderstruck challenge), being accepted into both Belmont and Berklee universities, and deciding to pursue music full time. We talked about Taylor Swift; a staple in Hailey’s music collection and lifestyle really.

The Thing About Moving To Nashville, with Alee21 Mar 202300:48:44

Send us a text

Alee first popped onto the country music scene with singles like “Only The Strong Survive”, “Don’t Say You Love Me”, and “Moonshine”. Earning multiple CCMA and CMAB nominations, along with multiple Top 20 singles are just some of the highlights of Alee’s career.

We sat down with Alee to recap some of her finest moments, including door-knocking on radio programmer’s doors with her CDs (teaching us the fine line between persistence and harassment), working construction, and finally deciding to make the move to Nashville.

Alee is a classically trained pianist who didn’t pick up the guitar until a little later. She talked about songwriting on both instruments and finding her home at the piano.

Alee’s newest single “Love Songs” has an interesting story behind its inspiration. She told the story for TikTok of how she was playing “When You Say Nothing At All” and mid-song a woman interrupted and said she would pay her to stop playing.

Why did she do that?

You’ll have to tune into the episode where she tells us the full story.

Steven Lee Olsen has become one of Nashville's most consistent and sought after songwriters. But he also puts on a hell of a show as a solo artist too.

We had the best time chatting with SLO and getting to know him more. We talked about what it feels like to have stars like Keith Urban recording his music, and how it felt when he watched "Blue Ain't Your Color" climb the charts.

He has been on tour with Old Dominion, and we talked about how it felt to perform in his hometown on such a huge tour. We look back at that night and what it meant to look out and see his city show up for him on that stage.

On this week’s episode of our podcast, we spoke with one of the greatest storytellers in country music. Dani Strong joined us for our longest, but most open, honest and funny conversations we’ve had.

Dani has had a very interesting, and unusual journey to success in the country music industry. Getting her start with the trombone, moving to rock music, then finally settling in to the world of country music, Dani has seen it all.

We talked about the Calgary Stampede, helping younger artists, starting her own company, and how she had a song stolen … like, actually … someone took her song (AND VOICE) and pretended it was theirs.

RELATED: Have a listen to her single “Slow Down” …

We spoke with Dani for over an hour, but we could have spoken for hours more. She’s one of the easiest artists to talk to.

We really hope you enjoy this episode as much as we enjoyed recording it.

This week we have a bit of a different episode for you. We were one of the sponsors for the 2022 Boots & Hearts Emerging Artist Showcase so we thought it would be fun and different to record an episode from the festival.

Jenna sat down for a quick chat with some of the Emerging Artist Showcase finalists after their performances.

Owen Riegling ended taking home the title of official Emerging Artist at this year's festival, but at the time of recording, we only knew that Owen and Taylor-Rae were selected as the two finalists competing for the official title.

Jenna sat down with Owen Riegling, Amber-Jo Bowman, Mark Ledlin, ANNIKA, and Taylor-Rae. We recorded this backstage at the festival, so you can hear some background noise, so you'll have to listen a little hard for some of the chats. Sorry about that!

Enjoy Jenna's chat with these 5 fantastic artists.

Weeding The Garden with Brian John Harwood23 Aug 202200:48:48

This week On The Porch with Front Porch Music we have Canadian country artist Brian John Harwood.

Brian John Harwood is no stranger to the world of Canadian country music. He has made a name for himself as both a solo artist and as one half of the duo Kansas Stone.

We talked a lot about food. We learned that he was a chef, he has an addiction to TimBiebs, and makes one hell of a Caesar.

We didn't only talk about food though.

We had a great conversation that ran the gamut. How he got started in music, got past his shy nature, his artistic expression, and what an artist's life is like as both a solo artist and as part of a duo.

It doesn't get much more real than Brian John Harwood. So please, enjoy our conversation with Canadian country artist Brian John Harwood.

Hillbilly Accents, Boots & Hearts, and Tinfoil Hats with Riley Taylor09 Aug 202200:43:50

This week we have the 2021 Boots & Hearts Emerging Artist Showcase winner Riley Taylor joining us On The Porch with Front Porch Music.

Last year, Riley won the biggest competition in Canada. Since that time, he has been laying the foundation to have a huge debut in the world of Country music. The time has finally come for his debut single to be released.

He has released "Good Things" and it came at the perfect time.

When Riley was announced as a finalist in the 2021 Boots & Hearts Emerging Artist Showcase, he was completely unknown by anyone outside of his hometown. He hadn't released any music, didn't have a website, and barely had any social media presence. So we were all excited to hear what he was all about.

From the moment he got on that stage, it was clear that he was the one to watch.

On this episode, we talked about what that whirlwind of a process was like for him. How as a shy person he found himself through music.

We spoke to Riley earlier this year.

This week we have Canadian country artist Mallory Johnson joining us On The Porch with Front Porch Music.

Mallory has had a big year so far. She was one of the top 8 finalists for Sirius XMs Top Of The Country contest, and just recently has been seeing big success with her single "Marriage" climbing the charts.

RELATED: Mallory was one of our Women in Canadian Country Spotlights ...

Mallory Johnson comes from a very musical family, growing up around celtic and country music, and touring through North America and Scotland with her family’s celtic band. She was just 11 years old when she recalls recording albums, lugging gear, and traveling in a van to play.

She took lessons and partook in musical theater, and while she never had the voice for it, theater taught her a lot about performing.

Now living in Nashville, we had the chance to catch up and talk about her new single, her fake wedding, and where her musical talent comes from.

Have a listen to our chat with Mallory Johnson.

The Salt Water Cowboy with Ben Chase09 Jul 202400:45:40

Send us a text

Ben Chase gambled on his career from a young age - literally. Growing up with Ben Chase gambled on his career from a young age - literally. Growing up with his grandfather’s influence and support of his family, the East Coaster packed his hockey bag at eighteen bound for the land of Canadian cowboys.

Working on what would become the first half of his debut album, gigging around the Prairies, and hitting the jackpot at the casino, Ben earned his stage legs. Three years in Alberta, and Ben was off to Nashville to surround himself with the best in the business.

Ben’s debut album “That Was Then, This Is Now” was released earlier this year, featuring streaming successes like “All Over It” (his first single release ever), “In My Truck Girl” and “Saltwater Cowboy”. We talked about Ben’s evolution as an artist over the course of the 20-song album. We also talked about what’s to come.

Ben just played Cavendish Beach Music Festival and made a special appearance at the Calgary Stampede.

His latest single “Somebody’s Summer” is out now - with a brand new single right around the corner! Listen to the episode to find out what that song will be!

Peace, Love & What’s in the Shaunavon Water with Hunter Brothers28 Jun 202200:45:12

Hunter Brothers are a busy band of …literal brothers, who are known for their incredible harmonies.

Growing up in Shaunavon, Saskatchewan, Ty, Dusty, JJ, Luke, and Brock know a thing or two about playing hockey, hard work on the farm, and country music.

We had all five brothers On The Porch where we chatted about growing up in rural Saskatchewan, how they got into music together, and their newest single, “Peace Love & Country Music”.

The brothers also chatted about where each of their strengths lie and how often Ty loses his wallet and passport – spoiler. It happens a lot! His wife had to get him a tracking tile for his wallet.

We also talked about some of the antics they get up to on the farm. If you happen to look up said antics, do not try any of it at home.

This week On The Porch, we had a great chat with country artist from Alberta, Devin Cooper.

This was a great conversation! It was so great to get to know Devin a little more.

He's had a big year so far ... He was part of the Project Wild program in 2022, nominated for a CMAB, and released his album "Good Things". We talked to him all about it.

In this episode, we had a lot of technical difficulties. Jenna and Logan had microphone troubles, but Devin sounded great! We thought about not releasing this episode, but the conversation was so good that we just had to!

So please excuse the audio quality, and help us welcome Devin Cooper to the Front Porch.

Crocs and Socks with Nate Haller31 May 202200:40:17

Send us a text

Nate Haller broke out into the country music scene in March 2021 with his debut single “Lightning In a Bottle”.  After playing guitar for The Reklaws and Kira Isabella, Nate Haller traded in his fedora for a ball cap and stepped into the spotlight.

In our chat with Nate, we talked about a lot more than just slinging guitar and his Nate Hall to Haller evolution.

If you’ve had a chance to connect with Nate Haller, you’ll know he doesn’t take himself too seriously. That’s why he suited up as “Chip Wreck” on The Reklaws’ Winter’s a Beach Tour.

He shared a little more about his new single, “Ain’t Like Me”, which for him is about how he and his girlfriend ended up together. He blew her away wearing a wine-stained tank top and crocs and socks.

Jenna and Nate reminisced on the high school days; they didn’t go to school together, but Nate did tour the local high schools and play for students at lunch hour. Did Jenna really throw a pop can at him? You’ll have to listen to the episode to find out.

We also played a round of “This Or That”, which included us making him choose between his best buddies Callum Maudsley and Stu Walker. Listen to the episode to see who he chose!
