A Conversation with David Cay Johnston: Time Well Spent26 Mar 202601:14:19

Steps You can Take to Restore Democracy

David Cay Johnston is a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter and a best-selling author.

He has been considered a contemporary muckraker because of his precise investigative style and the importance of the stories which he pursues.

Johnston shows neither political fear nor favor. Because of his careful analysis & research, administrations from both sides of the aisle have either made policy changes or been called to account.

He is a Professor of Practice at Rochester Institute of Technology teaching law, public policy & journalism. He is a frequent guest on multiple tv and radio programs, here and overseas.

Johnston is the co-founder of DC Report a not-for-profit service that provides reporting, information, and perspectives on the policies, politics & events that affect our everyday lives and futures.

Things to do to take back our democracy:

  1. Do NOT voluntarily submit to the tyrant
  2. Register to vote
  3. Check your voter status
  4. Get your friends/family/acquaintances to vote
  5. Get lawyers to take election week off to help

David's Refuge: "We Care for the Caregivers"18 Mar 202600:16:53

Today we are talking with Daidra Hamlin from David’s Refuge. David’s Refuge has been helping families in the Syracuse area since 2011 but has recently branched out into Rochester.

David’s Refuge was started by Warren and Brenda Pfohl after their son, David, died of Batten’s Disease, a rare, progressive disease that took his life just shy of his 21st birthday.

Instead of turning inward with their grief, the Pfohl’s decided to take the strength they saw and received from their son and turn it outward to help other parents and guardians of children with special needs and life-threatening illnesses.

David’s Refuge was created as a place where caregivers can spend a complimentary weekend in the company of others who understand their unique struggles.

Daidra was asked to talk to us today because she can speak both as a caregiver and a recipient of the benefits of Respite Weekends. Daidra and her husband have 3 wonderful boys: a set of 16 year old twins and a 5 year old. One of the twins and their youngest son have a genetic diagnosis of Ponto Cerebellar Hypoplasia (PCH) which is a neurogenetic disorder. They are non-verbal and in wheelchairs. The other twin is neuro typical.

When parents find themselves in such a challenging environment, sometimes we forget to find time for ourselves. But if we don’t take care of ourselves, we are less prepared to care for those who need us.

The Respite Weekend is the heartbeat of David’s Refuge. You can spend time at a B & B or at a hotel to recharge and refill. You are given the tools to help cope the rest of the year.

Throughout the year, David’s Refuge also has a Wellness Initiative that has offerings both in-person and virtual that is an important part of caregivers’ overall health.  It offers things like Virtual and in-person yoga and fitness classes; 1:1 nutrition counseling; Caregiver Support Groups and so much more!

To build Community, David’s Refuge offers events for the whole family, some events are just for the caregivers and the children with special needs and some events are just for caregivers – something for everyone!

To become a part of David’s Refuge there is an application process. You can find it at DavidsRefuge.Org or on David's Refuge Facebook Page.

David’s Refuge is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with strong financial health and is well regarded in the non-profit community. It works with organizations like Autism Up and The Golisano Center.

Be on the lookout for more details on ROC for Caregivers, Sept 24th at The Carlson.

“The mission of David’s Refuge is to provide respite, resource and support to parents and guardians of children with special needs or life threatening medical conditions where they will be refreshed, restored and renewed in their role as caregivers.”

If you’d like to donate to, volunteer at or contact David’s Refuge, you can do that at Davids Refuge.org.

Greater Rochester Enterprise: Marcia Sits Down with President & CEO Matt Hurlbutt06 Dec 202400:28:51

Prepare for something completely different on this episode of "On the Go with The Glenn Advantage Team!" Marcia chats with GRE's Matt Hurlbutt for a non-stop half-hour of high energy discussion about a company that is dedicated to attracting and growing businesses in the Rochester Region. GRE has had a significant role in bringing companies like fairlife, Pfisterer, AMD, UltraPhil, Geis and Edwards to the area. Additionally, GRE has helped companies already here see the benefits of expanding rather than moving on - companies like HP Hood, IDEX Health & Science, O'Connel Electric, Oxbo, General Motors Rochester Operations in Gates and Toyota Material Handling North American in Henrietta.

When asked how GRE was able to meet the needs of its clients, Matt said that GRE is "built to respond". The "request for information" that used to be due in 2 weeks is now expected in 24 hours. But, because of the positive multidisciplinary relationships GRE has built up over its 20+ year history, it can draw upon the business, academic, government, and infrastructure communities to assess the feasibility of a new project. Because, like Matt says, "Rochester is a One Degree Separation Town".

Both Marcia and Matt are from the Rochester area and they agree that Rochesterians don't brag about themselves nearly enough. This episode is another reason why they should. Enjoy!

Welcome to Marcia's conversation with Brighton's "Cheerleader in Chief" Town Supervisor Bill Moehle. In this fun and information-filled episode of On the Go with the Glenn Advantage Team you will hear about so many wonderful things Brighton has to offer, for instance:

  • With a population of about 37,000 and being a close suburb to Rochester it has easy access to the city's amenities while still having a close-knit community atmosphere.
  • Brighton hits a "sweet spot" in size that it has highly qualified, trained, professional staff at all levels, but familiar enough that people are on a first name basis

  • The area is rich with history and cultural & religious diversity,
  • The town is home to 7 town parks, 2 county parks nature trails and over 500 acres of parkland and open spaces to enjoy.

  • There are 5 school districts in the Town of Brighton and the award-winning Brighton School District receives high marks for academics, administration, college prep & teachers.
  • The Development in Brighton is booming!
    • The Reserve in Brighton on Erie Canal - homes, townhomes and condominiums with multiple configurations on a property next to Erie Canal, with a dog park, fountains, ponds and a Clubhouse that has everything from a pool, to a spa, to a mini-theater, wine cellar and more!
  • Top Golf is coming to CityGate and is expected to open Summer 2025 - you don't have to be a golfer to go!
  • Aldi's grocery store will be opening soon on South Clinton near McQuaid HS
  • Brighton just received a grant to help fund the renovation of the Brighton Town Hall, including an update to the HVAC system using geothermal technology & affording better accessibility.
  • The town also received a grant to renovate the community pool at the Town Hall, replace the existing playground adjacent to the pool to make it more accessible, and install a new splash pad for all to enjoy.

Discovering Penfield with Supervisor Jeff Leenhouts20 May 202400:20:00

In today's episode Marcia welcomes Penfield Supervisor Jeff Leenhouts. Did you know that Penfield has been ranked the second best place to live  for quality of life and one of the top 50 places to live in the US? It's really no wonder, since the area is rich with walking trails, athletic fields, museums, open air parks and beaches. The area is served by both the Penfield and Webster school districts and the children benefit greatly from the libraries and hands-on cultural opportunities that add to their learning and in-depth study. The job market is increasing, the average salary in Penfield is above the median state average and the overall cost of living is better than the US average. Crime rate is down and the housing market is very strong. There are multiple development projects that will enhance the Penfield area: Shadow Pines, originally a 212 acre golf course that was acquired by the town now has areas for hiking, orienteering, cross-country skiing, bird watching, and disc golf. Pickleball courts are being build. The Clark House is being rehabilitated and The Lodge is being added to it so the town can have another place for larger gatherings, parties, and weddings. There are mixed use properties being built at Routes 250 & 286 called The Arbors at Penfield, and Penfield Heights is being built across from the YMCA. The summer is a very busy social season for Penfield! On Monday May 27th is the Memorial Day Ceremony of Remembrance, On June 2nd at Dayton's Corner school House is the Pie Social and Fundraiser, Saturday June 29th is the Town of Penfield Independence Day Celebration and all summer long there are concerts to go to. To get more details about all of these go to Penfield.org and look under Events and Performances Tab. Penfield.org is also a great place to contact Supervisor Leehouts should you have any questions for him.

Immigration Law: A Fact-Finding Mission with Richard Link From JustCause12 Feb 202600:37:57

In this episode we look at Immigration. Our goal was to inform our followers about the law and provide helpful information for those seeking guidance.

Richard Link is a staff attorney with JustCause who specializes in Immigration Law. JustCause is an organization of attorneys that serves the low income population pro bono. They handle immigration cases, family law, wills & trusts, and housing/tenant issues.   JustCauseNY.org

On Jan. 30, 2026 Gov. Hochul introduced the "Local Cops, Local Crimes Act" to stop ICE from co-opting local law enforcement. Local & state police will continue to work with Federal law enforcement in criminal investigations.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office  does not ask about immigration status when people report crimes or seek assistance, so that both victims and witnesses can feel safe when they interact with law enforcement.

Different kinds of status:

  • US Citizen: you cannot be deported, you have full rights & responsibilities
  • Permanent Resident (aka Green Card holders): grants permanent residency, it is a pathway to citizenship after 3-5 years, you cannot vote & you can be deported if you commit certain crimes.
  • Refugee/Asylee: the person has a well-founded fear of persecution on the basis of race, religion, nationality, member of social or political group if returned to the home country, and the person is not a safety risk to the US.
  • Visa: Allows temporary entry for a specific purpose and is valid for a limited period of time. Does not to lead to citizenship.

Immigration is complicated. People don't understand what ICE/CBP can/cannot do.

  • If you're walking down the street and you "think" you may be stopped and asked about your status, have your papers on you at all times. DO NOT have a picture of it on your phone! Then ICE could take your phone.
  • If you are at a protest, intentionally - or if you happen to come across an incident by accident, you have the right to film it. BUT DO NOT interfere with the authorities! Don't "offer proof" that you have filmed the incident - that's like offering them your phone, which they can take.
  • NEVER ask someone their status. Ignorance is bliss if you are asked about someone else.
  • If ICE comes to your home, UNLESS they have a JUDICIAL WARRANT SIGNED BY A JUDGE you do not need to open any doors no matter what they say. Make them slide the paper under the door or put it against a window. You are protected by the 4th Amendment.
  • IF you get detained get a lawyer, you have a far better chance of success!
  • To help immigrants, work with local churches & organizations who already have systems in place.

Today we have primarily focused on Immigration law because of its relevancy, but please remember that JustCause does pro bono work for low income families in regard to family law, wills & trusts, and tenant issues.

"We are Public Servants not Politicians" Meet Webster Town Supervisor Alex Scialdone23 Jan 202600:20:07

He is very transparent and wants to encourage the rest of his team to be that way as well.

  • The small margin of victory meant that every “little” thing he did – every hand he shook, door he knocked on, event he attended had a significant impact.
  • The common theme he heard when out in the community was Communication. There is a great deal of fear of overdevelopment. Webster residents don’t understand why things are being done the way they are
  • People receive their information from different websites, news channels, platforms, social media sites and his people have to do better to make sure they are in front of the public. They are public servants, not politicians.

Fairlife Update: They are continuing to work apace to be compliant with Webster Town code, weekly meetings with the town and everyone seems pleased with the progress.

McAlpin Manufacturing Facility on Hard Road near Rt. 104: Further traffic study has been requested but congestion fears have been allayed: 1) the shifts stop and start during off-peak hours; 2) they will only be receiving 3-4 deliveries per day.  An unintentional acre of land was clear cut, but 54 additional trees will be planted to help regrow that area.

Property Re-evaluation: The re-evaluation provides an equitable re-distribution of property taxes. The tax levy has not gone up significantly and we are still within the standard rate of increase most, but not all, homes will not see any change in their level of taxes.

Alex Scialdone also spends his time volunteering at several non-profit organizations in Webster.

Webster Comfort Care Home – provides hospice at no cost to the family to live out the last 3 months of life in comfort and dignity. Runs entirely on donations by volunteers.

Trillium Health: Care for All, Care for Now, Care for the Future30 Dec 202500:44:56

In this episode Marcia interviews Trillium Health President & CEO Jason Barnecut-Kearns. Trillium is a Rochester-based healthcare provider unlike most others in the area. There are several things that set Trillium apart from other healthcare providers: TrilliumHealth.org

-       Community Health Center where everyone is welcome regardless of their ability to pay.

-      They are accepting new patients!

-       Sliding fee scales means people only pay what they can afford

-       No one is turned away because of inability to pay

-       Trillium offers its patients a welcoming, safe and stigma-free environment

-       “One stop shop”: offering the convenience of multiple services in one spot helps reduce barriers to care and supports that care model of treating the whole person: doctors, pharmacy, lab, food pantry, all in one place.

-       All offices have plenty of free parking, most are on a bus route

-       Trillium is a Federally Qualified Health Center

-      Some of Trillium's Services: Primary Care, GYN & Peds, Sexual Health, Treatment for Substance Use Disorder, Behavioral Health, Harm Reduction, Pharmacy, Food Pantry, Care Management, Transportation, Housing, Insurance Navigation and more!

-      Trillium began in the 1980's as an HIV clinic, but, in 2013 it became Trillium Health with a broader reach to offer care and supportive services to EVERYONE in the community. HIV and LGBTQ+ health are still part of their key services, but they also serve anyone in the community who can benefit from their services, regardless of their ability to pay.

-     Their Blog is packed full of information! (Go to TrilliumHealth.org, under "about us").

-      "Think about what the community needs and respond to that."  -Dr. Bill Valenti, co-founder, Trillium Health

    • Embracing modular homes as an alternative to traditional stick builds. This program has been successful in the City of Rochester and Palmyra in Wayne County.
    • Ensuring fair taxation of affordable homes. This program enables municipalities to apply a discount to the fair market assessment of single-family homes sold by non-profit housing developers to low-income families. The bill protects local control by allowing municipalities to opt-out if they do not wish to implement the discount.

Meet Kevin Berry, Candidate for Penfield Town Supervisor28 Sep 202500:25:17

November 4, 2025 is Election Day and it's an important day to have your voice heard.

Kevin is a current member of the Penfield Town Council. He is Chair of the Public Safety Committee and Town Board Liaison to the EECC, Friends of Dayton Corners School House, Historic Preservation Board and Zoning Board of Appeals.

His passions are his family (adoptive father to two sons and grandfather to three spirited granddaughters!) and commitment to public service.

  • over 30 years of experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities
  • currently is VP of Programs and Services at The Arc Wayne
  •  an advocate for people facing barriers to employment like disabilities or past involvement with the criminal justice system
  • BA in Political Science from SUNY Cortland and MA in Communication from SUNY Brockport
  • The Platform that Kevin is running on believes that:
    • Penfield's government must be transparent, inclusive of every voice and work for everyone.
    • We are committed to well-planned development that preserves our town's character and strengthens -- rather than strains -- our community.
    • Prioritizing safe streets and well-maintained infrastructure for all.
  • The residents of Penfield need to feel heard, need to be heard and the Supervisor needs to be the one to listen.
  • Development needs to be smart, not just constantly pushing forward. Infrastructure needs to be in place. Penfield needs to recognize not only its own value, but also its relationship to the larger community.
  • There should be communication between the Supervisor and the Board; respect for the process, the Board, and the people who elected them.
  • If elected, Kevin will seek people out to be involved in meetings, not simply passively invite them.
  • For all of this and MUCH more on Kevin Berry, please listen or watch the podcast!

Golf: The Sport of a Lifetime!29 Aug 202500:26:30

In today's episode Marcia interviews PGA Teaching Professional and long-time friend Chris DeVincentis. Chris has worked as a PGA Teaching Professional in the Rochester area for the past 45 years, working at Shadow Pines and Eagle Vale Golf Clubs before currently working at Big Oak Driving Range and Golf Shop in Penfield.

Marcia sat down with Chris to discuss the why the game of golf has become a "hole new ball game!" [HA!]

  • During the pandemic, golf was one of the few activities groups of people could engage in safely because it was outdoors and people were spread out
  • People who had quit playing are coming back and people who had never played are learning
  • Schools in increasing numbers are adding JV and Varsity golf teams
  • Technology around the sport has changed so drastically that it truly can be anyone's game now. Clubs are lighter and more efficient. You can walk the course and carry your clubs, or you can drive around the course in a cart, or now you can walk the course and use a remote controlled electric golf cart!
  • The benefits to playing golf are physical, mental and emotional
  • Golf is a game you can play with others or simply against yourself if you want
  • Golf is an incredibly philanthropic sport. Golfers are generous with their time and money for a myriad of causes.
  • Considering the number of golf courses we have in the Rochester area and the size of the city, per capita we have some of the best golf in the country! Some people may think we get "short changed" because of our weather, but Big Oak found a way around that:
    • Big Oak has Toptracer which is a simulator that can put you on any one of 10 of the best courses on earth. You can play a game at Pebble Beach while watching a Bills game and having a beverage from the bar at Big Oak.
    • Big Oak has 4 dedicated professional golfing instructors with decades of experience and knowledge that can help you with your game and assist in any purchases you need from the Pro Shop.
    • Big Oak has a driving range, lessons, a golf shop, club fitting and club repair
    • Big Oak runs multiple leagues year round
  • A final thought from Chris DeVincentis, PGA Teaching Professional at Big Oak Driving Range and Golf Shop in Penfield, "You can age through football, or basketball or hockey because they are contact sports, but golf, being less of a contact sport, is the sport of a lifetime."

What to do When Disaster Strikes Your Home: An Interview with a Property Restoration Specialist04 Jun 202500:30:38

What do you do when you have a house fire? How do you handle a kitchen pipe with a slow leak that has gone undetected for weeks? Where do you turn when the 100 year old tree decides to join you in your family room - through the roof?

Today we are talking to someone who spends his life helping homeowners rebuild their lives after disaster strikes. Marcia will be talking to Ben Cook, Vice-President of Struck & Sons Property Restoration Specialists in East Rochester.

  • They will talk about general guidelines to follow in an emergency
  • Homeowner's Insurance - what to know
  • How to select a restoration company after disaster has struck
    • First select a mitigation/remediation company to deal with the immediate aftermath of the emergency
    • After the immediate phase of the emergency has been dealt with, then start to work to restore your home
  • The restoration process
  • Making a plan before disaster strikes so that if the unimaginable happens life is a little bit easier

Ben's Eight Great Preparedness Questions:

1. Smoke Detectors: do you have them and are they in working order?

2. Escape Routes: have you created them and do any require supplemental assistance like rope ladders from second story windows?

3. Is there an accessible egress from your basement?

4. Have you discussed the Safety Plan with all members of the family?

5. Is there a plan in the event of a sump pump failure?

6. Your Homeowner's Insurance: Is it up-to-date? Do you have a Replacement Cost Policy or an Actual Cost Policy? Do you know how to contact your insurance company in an emergency? When is the last time you've taken pictures of your home - not the people in it, but the actual house!

7. Is there asbestos in your home?

8. In the event of an emergency, are you financially prepared?

A Primer in Real Estate: Marcia Sits Down with Jim Yockel from GRAR02 Jan 202500:42:14

Today we are in for a treat! Between Marcia and her guest, they have over 5 decades of real estate experience to share! Today Marcia sits down with Jim Yockel, CEO of the Greater Rochester Association of Realtors (GRAR). The GRAR supports brokers & agents as they help the community in an era of ever-changing needs. GRAR promotes professionalism among REALTORS, providing its own school where, as a benefit of their membership, the agents can get all the licensing requirements they need. The organization also provides tech support to the agents as well as MLS services and the forms associated with it. In the event of a problem during a showing, your REALTOR can call GRAR for assistance.

  • GRAR also supports Re-Imagine ROC Housing which is working to promote solutions to the housing crisis in the area. Monroe County is 18,000 housing units short of what it needs to house its population. Large corporations are coming in and buying up large blocks of urban single dwelling homes then turning around  and renting them out. That, in turn, leaves a gap of affordable housing for first-time home buyers. GRAR is working to come up with creative solutions like working with government officials to create pathways for tiny homes, or Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) or re-purposing abandoned properties like malls.
  • REALTORS Charitable Foundation makes grants to non-profit organizations whose mission supports wider access to home ownership. This program slowed down during COVID but is ramping back up again.
  • The Monroe County Vacant & Abandoned Property Task Force - there are many rules and regulations that can make it difficult for a property NOT to become a "zombie property" and simply sit and decay. This group tries to lessen the red tape and either get the owners to claim the property or release the property so it can be re-purposed or purchased.
  • The GRAR Advocacy Group is a conduit for conversation. It's a legislative liaison program that works behind the scenes. Its effective approach is more one-on-one and low-key.
  • The NAR Settlement - A Primer with 2 Professionals! This part of the podcast is a must listen! Communication is key and it is not as scary as you think.

A Conversation with Evan Dawson: We are Still More Alike than Different19 Apr 202600:55:03

"Connections with Evan Dawson" every weekday, noon - 2pm on WXXI-FM 105.9, WXXI-AM 1370 in Rochester and WEO 89.5FM in Geneva.

Evan is originally from the Cleveland, Ohio area. Growing up, he wanted to be the play-by-play guy for the Cleveland Cavaliers, but life has a way of intervening. After recovering from a health crisis, his interests began to change. A multi-talented and wonderful teacher created a broadcast studio in the school, which afforded Evan the opportunity to do high school play-by-play sports which lead to Dawson interviewing everyone from the mayor to the local congressman. From those experiences he decided broadcasting may be his path in life.

The scope of his podcast is comprehensive. There are no restrictions on what is covered. He has a great team to work with.

The calls on the show aren’t screened, but callers can’t be disrespectful of the guests. He appreciates fiery calls and emails, as long as they are respectful.

“Connections” attracts an audience of all ages – from teens to seniors, which is one of the reasons its varied programming is so successful.

Artificial Intelligence and technology are double-edged swords. "Connections" is a great way to get acclimated to the ROC area due to the diversity of coverage.

A political discussion of “left”, “right” and “center” and how the topics of the war in the Middle East and the behavior of ICE is shaping the conversation. It is not impossible for people to change their minds about something. And, you can have productive relationships with people with whom you disagree.

The Sinclair Broadcast Group operates WHAM (ABC) and WUHF (FOX), 2 pushes conservative, political viewpoints into the news and mandates “must-run” content that forced local anchors to read scripts that promoted fear-mongering crime stories. While such tactics are tacky and grotesque, they should not be confused with the people who work at the stations who are talented, ethical and hard-working.

Evan is an award-winning published author! He has written Summer in a Glass: The Coming Age of Winemaking in the Finger Lakes. It chronicles the transformation of New York’s Finger Lakes into a world-class wine region. It won the 2012 Louis Roederer Award for international Book of the Year.

Evan is a baseball fan; he also coaches his son’s team. His first memory of baseball was his Dad taking him and his twin brother on a trip to Cincinnati and Chicago to Riverfront Stadium, Wrigley Field and Kominsky Park in one trip. His Dad was his first baseball coach. His favorite team is the Cleveland Guardians.

Final Thought: our neighbors are not online caricatures; they are human beings. These days we tend not to know our neighbor two doors down from us, but whether they look like us, or vote like us, we are more alike than different.

Diana Kastenbaum: I Have the Knowledge, Wisdom & Experience to Start on Day One for NY2420 Jun 202601:05:07

Diana Kastenbaum lives in Batavia in Genesee County. For 25 years she owned a small IT Tech Company that worked with law firms. She returned home where her family owned a tool & die casting business and became the CEO. Her mission was to bring the company up to date and create a legacy plan so when the company was eventually sold, the vendors, customers and the employees who had faithfully worked with the company for years would continue to have jobs & accounts. While there she wore many hats: truck driver, purchasing agent, improvised sitter, healthcare manager, etc.

Her father, a veteran, and her husband both became ill around the same time. She became very familiar navigating both healthcare systems and greatly admires those who provided the care.  Crossroads House

Diana has one daughter of whom she is very proud!

Not to disparage Claudia Tenney, but she is not accessible to her constituents. Last year, right after Sackets Harbor, Diana formed Concerned Citizens of NY24 with Scott Comegys. It was created because people wanted to talk about all the deportations & executive orders. Tenney was invited to several Town Halls and available for none. Diana visited that (Sackets Harbor) farm afterwards and spoke to the owners at length. ‘I like to go myself and find out what’s happening in the district.’

Regarding the current immigration policy, Diana says this district is huge, encompassing 14 counties, so what happens in Niagara may not happen in Jefferson. There are many issues in this red, gerrymandered district. "The NY24 Representative must be facile, adaptive and be willing to travel!" Even if all the democrats came out [to vote] we couldn’t win. Hopefully the non-affiliated will come on board. Winning will not be possible without republicans. Many may stay home, but hopefully they are so disgusted with what is happening that they come out and vote.

Farming is the economic driver in NY24. There are orchards, vineyards, crop farmers and dairy farmers that go all through this district. Diana has been on a farm tour throughout. Most of the owners are republican. She’s sitting down with them for 2 ½ hours or more and asking questions.

The farmers are very upset with the tariffs. The farmers are paying tariffs on new machinery AND they are also paying tariffs on parts for existing equipment. The input costs just on equipment is huge. Getting fertilizer for the smaller farms has been difficult with the issues in Iran.  The cost of off road diesel fuel has gone up too.

Deportations – ICE has come in and taken the farm’s workers – the farmers are very concerned because the workers are like family to them. The farmers are the stewards of the land. Their succession plan is their family, something Diana can relate to.

The other thing affecting the farmers is the reduction of their markets. Programs like USAID and SNAP have been eliminated or severely curtailed. These were supplemental income that farmers had, but now those markets are gone.

NY24 is also right near Cornell Land Grant Institution.  Many of NY’s farmers have gone to school and gotten their degrees in the Agriculture Department. With federal funding being taken away from institutions like Cornell, research is not progressing and the next new molecule is left undiscovered.

Showing up and talking to the farmers, being familiar with their struggles, hearing what the people of NY24 have to say and marching with them in protests may be reasons people will vote for Kastenbaum over Claudia Tenney.

What farmers are looking for their representative to do once on The Hill: 1-Be on the Agricultural Committee; 2-Be on the Appropriations Committee; 3-Have an Advisory Board that can reach out to NY24 Constituents and stay current with the district’s needs and keep the dialog open

Diana is not against ICE as it was originally created, in the Department of Immigration and Naturalization Services under the Department of Homeland Security, with vetted agents who have been trained to do their job. There must be better training, absolutely no masks, and judicial warrants must be in place. The unqualified agents need to go. The brutality needs to stop. It needs to return to its original intent and correct some things that weren’t done right the first time.

Kastenbaum fears that if they start picking up migrants, what’s to say they don’t start picking up someone who is Muslim or Jewish or autistic, or gay or lesbian or trans? When do we say it’s enough? So, it’s important that we stand up and fight against this kind of authoritarianism and make sure it does not happen here.

Diana agrees with Gov. Hochul’s provision in the 2027 budget that prohibits local law enforcement agencies from working with ICE agents to identify, detain and process suspected illegal aliens. She is also encouraging anyone who lives in a county in NY24 that currently does not have a resolution on the books that prohibits local law enforcement from colluding with ICE, to reach out to your County Legislators. YOUR VOICE DOES MATTER!

Kastenbaum believes term limits for Congress should be 3 terms, 6 years. Senate should be 2 terms, 12 years, no grandfather clause. She has signed a pledge for US Term Limits. Tenney did not.

Diana says the US Supreme Court used to be one of the last bastions of our balance of power. Now it’s not. There should be more than 9 Supreme Court justices, and an age limit with a retirement age in the mid-80’s.

Regarding women’s healthcare, Kastenbaum has always been for a woman’s right to choose. New York is great, but what about the people in Texas or Tennessee? What if you have a high-risk pregnancy? What if you miscarry and need further medical intervention? The difference between life and death is a matter of a few hours, sometimes minutes.

Life experience creates empathy with people and that’s what I think is lacking with candidates. You can say good things but unless you can come to the table having lived a full life and gained wisdom and experience, you’re not going to be able to serve them that well.

Please give us your thoughts on Israel and Iran – and, if you think Cuba is next:

Diana is Jewish. She believes this is a difficult question for Jewish people and that the Middle East is complicated. She is for a 2 state solution. She believes that October 7th was an atrocity and she does not support Netanyahu at all. She doesn’t support Hamas or Hezbollah, or the Muslim Brotherhood in Iran. The Palestinians and the Israelis want peace. That’s why we need a 2 state solution.

Diana is against insider trading.

She feels The Epstein files need to be released. This is an abomination.

Kastenbaum’s top goals for bettering the 24th District if she is elected all have to do with affordability: 1) Healthcare – every year prices go up and coverage goes down; 2) Tariffs make commodities higher; 3) Educational costs; 4) Energy costs

Diana was asked what makes her different from her democratic opponent (Alissa Ellman)?

Diana's Response: Ask yourself a question: You need to come to the table with some knowledge, some expertise, the wisdom, the experience to start on Day 1. Who is better suited for the job?

Alissa Ellman: Dem for NY24 "I'm Doing this Out of Desperation to Maintain the Rule of Law"19 Jun 202600:47:57

Alissa Ellman grew up in Houghton, NY. She is the youngest of 6 children.

Her first job was at Houghton College. She joined the military as a way earn money and pay for college. Alissa entered the National Guard’s Basic Training. Shortly after her return, September 11th happened and, as for so many, everything changed.  She trained for Flight Operations and her first deployment started on her 19th birthday. She did an 18 month deployment, mostly in Afghanistan, and after she came home, she was recruited as a contractor back to Afghanistan where she did airfield management and logistics. After several years, Alissa decided it was time to come home.

She settled down in Western NY, married, had 2 daughters, put herself through school and became a Special Education teacher, focusing on students with behavioral issues.

In 2018 she was diagnosed with Burn Pit Cancer, which came from being exposed to toxic elements in Afghanistan. While rare, it is very curable.

Grateful and impressed with her treatment from the VA, she decided to “give back” after she recovered. Alissa processed claims for the VA. Twenty-eight days shy of her one year anniversary she was “DOGEd” in the first round of cuts – not through any fault of her own, it was because the people in the government making the decisions were “delusional narcissists”.

Alissa started a political action group with a friend Stand Up Lockport that began with having coffee once a week which grew to 300 people showing up. A movement was born. Now Alissa Ellman is running for Congress.

1)   She wants comprehensive immigration reform. It must be simple, straightforward & affordable. She wants to start with extending visas. She wants a program where:

(a) an immigrant comes to the country for 10 years and works, stays out of trouble, pays their taxes, doesn’t rely on any type of social programs

(b) the immigrant gets the chance at citizenship, and the cost should be something affordable to a working class person

(c) one program for seasonal workers who work for farmers with crops, orchards and wineries

(d) a different program for dairy farmers who need help year-round.

2)   Farmers and the people of the NY24 are upset about tariffs and the US’s current relationship with Canada. “If I win, I would meet with farmers on a regular basis because of how important they are to the local economy.”

3)   Ellman thinks the traditionally Republican district might possibly flip this year:

a)   Since being gerrymandered, NY24 is a huge district – it takes 4 hours to get from one side to the other.

b)   This area has been a Republican stronghold, but these same voters are facing higher costs and lower profits.

c)   Tenney’s political success is simply because the democrats don’t run for local offices. The democratic voters keep showing up and there is no democrat to vote for, so why should they bother to vote in a mid-term election?

d)   The largest group of voters in NY24 are the No Party Preference, or “NOPs”. They are Independents. They don’t show up to vote because politicians don’t knock on their doors. That’s an opportunity for the Dems.

e)   Statistics have shown that if you knock on a door, regardless of party affiliation, if there is a positive interaction, there is a 65% chance of getting the vote.

f) There are more reasons to run for Congress than just to win. Ellman’s campaign helps all down-ballot races because it helps to drive voter turn-out

g) Securing votes means building relationships & infrastructure for a viable congressional campaign. Even the last 2 democrats who ran and lost helped to build both those things. “My life’s goal is not to be in politics. I’m doing this to maintain the rule of law and to help to develop a country I’m proud of and want my kids to participate in and that’s going to care about people over corporations.”

h)   If Alissa loses the primary or the general election, her plan is to encourage younger people to become involved in politics by mentoring them. As an experienced teacher she believes she is the right person to do that.

4. Ellman believes that Claudia Tenney is vile and her voting record is horrendous. In her social media she is washing a veteran’s grave, but she voted against the PACT Act. Alissa calls that performative politics.

5. Regarding ICE: Stand Up Lockport was one of the first groups to encourage the local sheriff to consider the legal and financial ramifications of detaining immigrants without due process and/or cause. No screaming, no protesting, no road closures. Just a very well-written letter by an experienced immigration attorney.

6. Ellman wants to see government reform. She is in favor of term limits but is flexible about the implementation of the plan.

7. She believes there should be turnover in the Supreme Court. It should be generational. The people deserve to have appropriate representation.

8. Access to abortion is healthcare. She is 100% pro-choice.

9. Ellman is against war in nearly all circumstances. She would prefer more diplomatic solutions.

10. Release the Epstein files!

11. Top 3 things she wants to do for NY24, under the umbrella of affordability:

a) Scaling electric bills

b) Weatherization programs that are fully and federally funded for homes, rentals, & trailers

c) An extension of public school education down to 2yo

   - Screenings can be done earlier to detect potential learning issues

   - Child is with a degreed teacher rather than non-professional

12. Wants to see Universal Basic Income implemented

13. Why vote for her over Kastenbaum?

She’s a fresh face, has better policy positions, and she’s more progressive.

Congressman Joe Morelle: We Want a Government that Prioritizes Stability, Affordability & Opportunity02 Jun 202600:59:10

Congressman Morelle is a former small business owner, Monroe County Legislator, and Majority Leader of the NY State Assembly. He's served the 25th District since 2018.

He sits on 4 committees: his is the ranking member on House Administration; he serves on the all important House Appropriations Committee and is a member of the Joint Committee of Congress on the Library and joint Committee on Printing. He also supports many caucuses and task forces

Joe has co-sponsored and help to pass nearly 2000 bills and cast floor votes in support of major comprehensive legislation and was the primary sponsor of legislation combatting drugs like Fentanyl.

Joe enjoys spending time with his family, his wife, Mary Beth, of over 40 years, and their sons, Joseph and Nicholas and their wives. Joe and Mary Beth lost their daughter, Lauren, to Triple Negative Breast Cancer several years ago. She is survived by her now 2 teenage children with whom Joe and Mary Beth love spending time.

They have established a tradition of Sunday Morning Breakfast where local family members and friends gather together and Joe cooks for everyone. He even cleans up afterwards! When Lauren was in treatment for cancer, after breakfast was over the family would get out their notebooks and calendars and arrange who would be taking care of the transportation for the medical appointments that following week.

You never know what people are going through - give people a little grace - on the road, in the street, wherever you are.

There really is no way to "wean" yourself off the death of a loved one, particularly if they die suddenly. There is a finality and absoluteness to them being gone. Be empathetic to them. Be patient with YOURSELF. Reach out to them. Follow the Golden Rule: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

Morelle has proposed House Resolution 8984 to try and curtail the actions of the DHS at the Keating Federal Building. He believes these actions are necessary, in part, because of the chaos having a processing site or detention center would bring in a building that also houses municipal offices like Bankruptcy Court, Traffic Court, Code Compliance/Violation, law firms, the Social Security Administration, Senators Schumer and Gillibrand's offices and a daycare center. Additionally, if used as a detention center, it makes it far more difficult for citizens to exert their First Amendment Right to protest and free speech. His hope is to stop it before it opens.

Trump NEVER asks:

  • Is this Constitutional?
  • Is this legal?
  • Is this ethical?

The immigration process has changed over the years. You used to be able to get into the country with $20 in your pocket, a relative who was already here, and no communicable diseases. Now it takes up to 10 years to become a citizen! Immigrants that come here, for the most part, WANT to be here, they WANT to work, they WANT to follow the rules, they WANT to pay taxes, they don't want to be demonized. The evil genius of Donald Trump is that he can get people to blame each other for his poor leadership.

Morelle is a staunch supporter of women's rights in spite of this Supreme Court.

In April 2026, he launched a new task force on Anti-Corruption and Democracy Reform to take on corruption and restore trust in government. There are 4 key areas the 120th Congress wants to focus on. (The initial draft is 1000 pages long!):

  1. Stopping the Executive Branch from monetizing the Oval Office
  2. Stopping Congress, the President, Vice President and Cabinet members from stock trading and from becoming Lobbyists immediately after leaving office
  3. Reforming the Supreme Court
  4. Safeguarding the Elections

The Congressman had specific thoughts about the Supreme Court:

  • He believes there should be term limits. They should serve for 18 years, then gain "Senior status". In the event that there is an unexpected vacancy on the active court, the "Senior" member could step in during the interim so the court could proceed as usual.
  • Each of the active members should be compelled to "ride the circuit" to hear appeals cases to attempt to regain the trust of the American people.

As part of his task force work, Morelle is focusing on the upcoming elections:

  • Identifying potential threats to the elections process
  • Mitigating any threats
  • Do we have the resources to cover it?

There are networks of networks covering this all over the country. The more people know their rights, the harder it is for people to interfere in the elections. There will be midterm elections. Election administrators take their responsibilities VERY seriously.

We need a War Powers Resolution Act in regard to Iran.

In order to preserve democracy we need new rules because of what Donald Trump has done to the Presidency.

The Epstein Files will be released.

His goals for the 25th district are:

  1.  build more houses
  2. make it easier for people in crisis and poverty to get services
  3. government reform which helps everyone

Meet Robin Wilt - Democrat Running for the NY 25th: Advocate, Integrator, Principled28 May 202601:01:47

Meet Robin Wilt. She's running against Joe Morelle in the Democratic Primary for NY 25 Congressional seat on June 23, 2026. She is a community organizer, a self-motivator and small business owner.

She is running at this time because she believes that our current leadership is lacking and to change the things she cannot accept.

Do not let her quiet demeanor fool you - she is an extraordinary policy wonk! Politics is most definitely her "wheelhouse". It will be up to the voters to decide if they agree with her positions.

Robin believes in single-payer healthcare and is an advocate of HR676 Medicare for All Act.

She believes that public safety is about more than police. Robin says public safety is really about the social determinates of health creating safer communities. Investing in programs of social uplift leads to safer communities. Investing in educational systems, housing affordability and availability, will ultimately lead to the need for fewer police.

In this episode Robin discusses the disparity of education between the City of Rochester and what lies just beyond its borders in areas like Penfield. She describes it as "communities of want vs. communities of wealth."

The plethora of primaries can be tied to the cowardice and complicity of the Legislative Branch to the Executive Branch.

The Congressional Progressive Caucus is a leader in trying to curtail President Trump's actions in Iran, then potentially Cuba. Robin is a strong supporter of the CPC. "We have the tools, we just have the political will."

Robin shares with us her opinions on the building of the ICE detention facility in the Keating Federal Building. She points out that the building was never intended for overnight accommodations. It was meant for transfer of custody only. There continue to be questions of safety surrounding both the Social Security Office and the daycare center, both of which are housed in the Federal Building. While frequent protesting in front of the building has garnered attention to the issue, it doesn't seem to have slowed the progress. Potential impactful tactics include looking into zoning laws.

One of Robin's campaign priorities is to "lower costs and expand opportunities". She is aware of the cost of housing, groceries, healthcare & utility bills. If elected she is very committed to using her legislative power to change things in Washington. She is very aligned with the Congressional Progressive Caucus. They have put out a New Affordability Agenda that Robin supports.

Recently, Senators Bernie Sanders and Ro Khanna introduced a bill to the Senate that would affect the 938 billionaires in the US. The Make Billionaires Pay Their Fair Share Act would impose a 5% tax on them to help the 60% of Americans that are living paycheck to paycheck.

She thinks one of the best ways to help reform the Supreme Court is to impose term limits.

Robin also thinks that partisan gerrymandering is not the answer to "equal representation". Her answer is to have the House of Representatives change their currently capped number of 435 which is based on The Permanent Apportionment Act of 1929 and Congress adopted in 1941. The population of the US had nearly tripled since 1929, so it only makes sense to change how many people represent us in Congress based on the least populated state in the US (Wyoming).

She is endorsed as a Courage Candidate and if elected, on "Day 1" she will sign Articles of Impeachment against President Trump.

Robin is also a supporter of "Move to Amend" that supports overturning Citizens United. "Money is not free speech".

Robin Wilt wants a return to civility, in politics and in general. She wants a return to facts in sharing information. She says we need to govern with facts, not fear.

St. Joseph's Neighborhood Center: A Bridge Not a Barrier to a Better Life03 May 202600:35:09

Tiffany Paine–Cirrincione is the Director of Development & Communications for the St. Joseph Neighborhood Center.

SJNC provides primary & specialty care, mental health counseling, support services & referrals, healthcare access assistance, to individuals & families who are uninsured & under-insured in the greater Rochester area.

In the 1970’s the Sisters of St. Joseph were actively involved in the Catholic Worker Movement. They opened the House of Hospitality, Nazareth University, Special Touch Bakery, & The Villa of Hope, to name a few. The House of Hospitality dealt with housing & food insecurities. In the 1990’s the Sisters realized these people needed medical & mental health care assistance. So the Center was created.

Caring for the “dear neighbor without distinction” is a tenet of the Sisters of St. Joseph, and has stayed with the Center even though it became an independent non-profit in 2012.

While the SJNC does provide primary care services, they are not looking to keep patients long-term. The SJNC is meant to be a bridge from needing healthcare services to getting healthcare services.  SJNC's Care Coordinators will help with paperwork for financial aid, or to get you into a larger healthcare system, and provide referrals to community partners for housing insecurity or food stability. They can help with transportation by way of bus passes or Uber gift cards.

The best way to be seen at SJNC is to make an appointment: 585-325-5260

The SJNC is not a free clinic. The fees for services in the building are based on a sliding scale from $5 to $50.

The Center provides prescriptions like a primary care physicians office might and sends it to the patient’s preferred pharmacy, providing any available coupons to minimize cost for the patient. Whenever possible longer scripts are written to minimize inconvenience and transportation difficulties for the patient.

The Center has introduced a refreshed set of organizational values & a renewed strategic framework. A clever acronym has been created for the revitalized value system: B.R.A.V.E.

SJNC hosts events to discuss the needs of the underserved, explore opportunities for collaboration, and find new ways to better meet those needs:

Table Talk and Tastings is the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 5:30pm

Breakfast at the Center is the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 8am. Please register in advance.

The Center is getting ready to host their annual Tasting and Auction on Wednesday, June 3, 2026. Tickets are $60. Come dressed as your favorite Legend!
