We're both big sci-fi nerds, so when the option came up to review one of the most influential science-fiction movies of all time, we had to pick it. 'Forbidden Planet' from 1956 is a goldmine of firsts for fans of the genre. Its hand in basically creating the style of sci-fi that we love today cannot be disputed. Plus, it stars the one and only Leslie Nielsen, alongside Walter Pidgeon, Anne Francis, and Robby the Robot.

We're halfway through the 50s and you know what that means... It's time for another bonus battle! We've taken two giant monster movies from 1955 and put them head to head to see which comes out on top. We've got a massive tarantula on the loose in 'Tarantula', but maybe the real monsters were the humans who made it along the way, and we've got an angry octopus in 'It Came From Beneath the Sea', but maybe the real villains in that film are the boring human characters. It's 1954 and we're covering our second Jules Verne adaptation of the year... '20,000 Leagues Under the Sea'. It stars Kirk Douglas and James Mason, is directed by Richard Fleischer, and is produced by Walt Disney himself. It was the most expensive Hollywood film to date when it came out and proved to studios that pumping millions into movies is a very safe business model that won't cause studios to go bankrupt in the late 60s (or the present day). Also, it's got a giant squid in it!
