Welcome to S1 E4 with author, creator, gambler, and collector Jeffrey Magid.

I recently met Jeff as his Instagram videos popped up on my phone. I was impressed not only with how generous he came across, but also how unusual it was for a collector to be so open. I knew we'd have a great conversation and I was right!

In this episode we discuss how reciprocity and friendship inform Jeff's collecting. He tells us about all the mistakes he's made as a collector, and he shares some truly mindblowing stories of experiences accumulated along his collecting journey. You can follow him on instagram and on tiktok.

Collecting art saved my life with author and educator Alvin Hall

Saison 1 · Épisode 3

lundi 3 mars 2025 • Durée 55:02

Send us a text

Welcome to S1 E3 with collector Alvin Hall.

Alvin and I have been friends for almost 20 years. He bought work from my gallery right when we opened and we've stayed in touch ever since. He's a collector but he's also a celebrated educator, TV presenter, and author. He has a gift for conveying the essence of collecting art in a way that is highly compelling and crystal clear.

In this episode we discuss the thrill of falling in love with art for the first time, how one's understanding of art evolves over time, meeting artists, asking for discounts, plus some hot tips on where to hang your most recent purchase, and how to ameliorate art viewing when you can't physically see art in person.

Alvin Hall is an award-winning television and radio broadcaster, author, and renowned financial educator. His 10-episode podcast series, Driving the Green Book, was the winner of the inaugural Ambie Award for Best History podcast (2021) and winner for New York Festivals Gold Award as the Best Narrative Documentary Podcast (2021). His numerous radio programs include Alvin Hall’s Other America (BBC World Service), Diane Arbus: Intimate Portraits (BBC Radio 4, winner of New York Festivals Finalist Award),The Tulsa Tragedy That Shamed America (BBC Radio 4), The Green Book (BBC Radio 4), and Jay-Z: From Brooklyn to the Board Room (BBC Radio 4, winner of the Wincott Award for financial and business journalism). For five years on BBC2 television, he hosted the highly rated and award-winning series, Your Money or Your Life, on which he offered both practical and psychological advice about personal finance. His children’s book, Show Me the Money (Dorling Kindersley) has been published in several foreign language editions. His most recent book, Driving the Green Book (Amistad) was a winner of the 2024 Honors Award for Nonfiction from the Black Caucus of the American Library Association. He is currently producing his first feature-length documentary on the iconic Lorraine Motel. He is chair of MoMA’s Black Arts Council and co-chair of the Bowdoin College Museum of Art, as well as being a board member of the New York City AIDS Memorial and The Conversation US.

Separating price and value with art market journalist Marion Manecker

Saison 1 · Épisode 2

I am thrilled to share this conversation with journalist Marion Manecker. We discuss how the art market is really a distribution market. Marion suggests dumping the idea that the most expensive art is the best art. He also shares his clarifying ideas about speculators, alchemy, and about the real flex that underlies all art purchases.

A longtime art world columnist and auction house insider, Marion Maneker is the founder of Artelligence, a leading source of information on the global arts market. He was formerly the president of ARTnews, a publisher at HarperCollins, and features editor at New York magazine. He currently writes Wall Power, the daily art market email for Puck.

Understanding today's wild art market with journalist and author Georgina Adam

Saison 1 · Épisode 1

Send us a text

Join me as I chat with the incomparable journalist and author, Georgina Adam.

This episode explores the evolving dynamics of the art market, focusing on the misconceptions surrounding art as merely an investment. We discuss the roles of galleries, auction houses, and the overall impact of economic and geopolitical factors on art appreciation and valuation.

• Discussion of various models and analogues for the art market

• Why is the current art market lethargic, or floppy?

• The growing trend of viewing art as a mere investment

• The state of art galleries today - their challenges and opportunities

• How auctions have grown, and how they are driving the market

• Art fairs as galleries’ way to compete with auction houses

• How to understand artists careers over time, as journey-driven

• Emphasis on the accessibility of art experiences for all

Georgina Adam has written about the art market and the arts in general for over 30 years, starting in Paris where she studied Islamic art at the Ecole du Louvre. After that she lived in London before spending five years in Japan, where she wrote on a freelance basis for a number of arts publications – The Art Newspaper, The Asian Art Newspaper, Art and Auction and Artnews - as well as Nikkei publishing.

She was art market editor at The Art Newspaper in London on her return from Tokyo, and remains art market editor-at-large for that publication. She wrote the art market column for the Financial Times for eight years and continues to contribute collector profiles to the newspaper. She is currently working on a new book.

Be sure to check out my two favorite books of Georgina's:
