| #038: The Overlooked Link Between Mouth Breathing, Sleep, Anxiety & Brain Fog | Dr Mary Bourke | 02 Sep 2026 | 00:56:31 | |
Could the Way You Breathe Be Driving Anxiety & Brain Fog? What if another supplement, diet or health protocol isn't the first place you need to look? What if something as automatic as how you breathe, chew and swallow could be influencing your sleep, nervous system and how you feel during the day? In this episode of Nutrition Gateway, I sit down with Dr Mary Bourke, an experienced chiropractor with more than 30 years in clinical practice and a special interest in orofacial growth, development and function. Mary is a certified Sacro Occipital Technique practitioner and craniopath, as well as CEO of Myo Munchee, continuing the pioneering work begun by her father, Australian dentist Dr Kevin Bourke, almost 60 years ago. And this conversation completely changed the way I think about the mouth. We explore the connection between mouth breathing, nervous system regulation, sleep quality, anxiety and brain fog, particularly for women moving through their 40s, perimenopause and beyond. Mary explains why we are designed to breathe through the nose, what can happen when mouth breathing becomes habitual, and why symptoms such as waking with a dry mouth, snoring, grinding your teeth, jaw tension, morning headaches and never quite feeling refreshed could be clues worth investigating. We also dive into something I had never considered before: the role of the tongue and swallowing. Mary explains how tongue position, swallowing and nasal breathing interact with the muscles of the upper airway and nervous system, and why the simple act of chewing may be far more important to lifelong health than most of us realise. In this episode, we discuss:
For the woman over 35 who feels as though she is doing all the things for her health but is still waking tired, battling brain fog, feeling anxious or wondering why her body doesn't feel as resilient as it once did, this conversation offers a completely different place to become curious. Because sometimes improving our health isn't about adding more. Sometimes it's about rediscovering the foundational things the human body was designed to do. Breathe. Chew. Swallow. Sleep. Move. Nourish. And perhaps start paying attention to what your mouth has been trying to tell you. About Dr Mary Bourke Dr Mary Bourke is an experienced chiropractor with more than 30 years in clinical practice and a special interest in orofacial growth, development and function. She is a certified Sacro Occipital Technique practitioner and craniopath and brings a distinctive hands-on perspective to health and development, particularly the role of oral function, breathing and chewing. Mary is CEO of Myo Munchee and co-creator of Handbook for the Human, an educational resource designed to help parents understand early human development through interconnected foundations including sleep, movement, nutrition, play, connection, feeding, breathing and early oral function.

| #037: Could Your Gut Be Driving Your Anxiety? The Science of the Endocannabinoid System | Nikki Freeburn | 29 Jul 2026 | 01:03:54 | |
What if your anxiety and brain fog weren't a mindset problem at all? Today I'm joined by Nikki Freeburn, founder of Institute Botanica in Newcastle and a pioneer in therapeutic plants, biofermentation and natural medicine. If you've been feeling anxious, overwhelmed, mentally foggy or like you've tried everything to get your health back on track, this conversation will open your eyes to an entirely different way of understanding your body. Nikki shares how our modern approach to health has become fragmented, why so many people are left confused by endless supplements and conflicting advice, and why restoring the body's natural communication systems may be one of the missing pieces in healing. We explore the fascinating role of the endocannabinoid system, why gut health influences everything from mood to mental clarity, and how therapeutic plants and biofermentation may help support the body's natural ability to find balance again. This is a conversation about curiosity over fear, simplicity over overwhelm, and learning to listen to the incredible wisdom your body already holds. In this episode we discuss: • Why anxiety and brain fog are often signs the body is out of balance rather than "broken" • The hidden role of the endocannabinoid system in regulating mood, inflammation, stress and overall health • Why gut health and the microbiome play such an important role in mental wellbeing • How therapeutic plants can support the body's own healing processes • Why biofermentation is creating so much excitement in the natural health world • The difference between chasing symptoms and supporting the body's natural intelligence • Practical first steps for women who feel overwhelmed, exhausted and disconnected from themselves About Nikki Freeburn Nikki Freeburn is inspired by natural lore and is the founder of Institute Botanica, a wellness education centre based in Newcastle, Australia. For more than 16 years, Nikki has developed innovative therapeutic applications using medicinal plants, botanical formulations and biofermentation. Her work combines traditional plant wisdom with modern scientific understanding to help people restore balance, vitality and resilience through nature. Together, Sally-Anne and Rebecca explore the often-unspoken connection between stress, nervous system safety, pleasure, intimacy and relationship disconnection. This conversation gently unpacks why so many high-achieving women can feel overwhelmed, touched out, anxious or disconnected from their desire, especially when they are carrying the mental load of family, work, relationships and everyday life. In this episode of Nutrition Gateway, Sally-Anne is joined by Dr. Irmarie Badenhorst, a chiropractor at Terrace Chiropractic in Raymond Terrace, who brings both clinical insight and personal experience to the conversation. After living with chronic lower back pain for over a decade and facing the possibility of surgery, Irmarie discovered chiropractic care and experienced first-hand how powerful the body’s natural healing capacity can be when it has the right support. Together, Sally-Anne and Dr. Irmarie explore the powerful connection between the spine, posture, nervous system regulation, pain, anxiety, digestion, sleep, headaches, and brain fog. For high-achieving women over 35 who feel foggy, anxious, tense, inflamed, exhausted, or disconnected from their body, this conversation opens up a different way to understand symptoms. Instead of seeing headaches, jaw tension, poor sleep, digestive changes, pain or emotional overwhelm as separate issues, Dr. Irmarie explains how they may all be nervous system clues. In this episode, you’ll learn:
Dr. Irmarie also shares why she is passionate about helping people understand their body, listen to their symptoms, and support long-term health through simple, consistent care. This is a powerful episode for women who know their body is trying to tell them something but have not yet connected the dots between stress, posture, nervous system function, and physical symptoms. Listen now to discover how chiropractic care may support your body's ability to move better, feel stronger, and restore balance. The episode is drawn from Sally-Anne’s conversation with Dr. Irmarie, where they discuss the autonomic nervous system, fight-or-flight, rest-and-digest, posture, women’s recovery after 35, and the difference between symptom relief and deeper repair. What happens when a man stops drifting, gets clear on who he is, and starts leading from a grounded, God-given identity? In this episode of Nutrition Gateway, I’m joined by Dusty Lapp- husband, father, minister, mentor, coach, and former professional bullfighter - celebrating his new book Kingdom Men: Rise, Lead, Finish. Dusty unpacks why sonship comes before striving, why identity is the first battlefield for men, and how vision (or lack of it) shapes marriage, family, health, and legacy. Dusty also shares encouragement for wives carrying too much; and why prayer and honour can become catalysts for change. Identifying within yourself that you are a Gray Area Drinker is a powerful yet overwhelming realisation. Jolene Park has walked this path in 2014 when she recognised her unhealthy habits with alcohol and stopped drinking, forever. Despite not being deemed to hit rock bottom, there was a truth within herself that she was drinking too much. Jolene believes when it comes to alcoholism, physiology first, then psychology second, determining nutritional deficiencies and depletions of nutrients such as B6, magnesium, low neurotransmitters, microbiome dysregulation (as this is the home for neurotransmitters). We need to apply the neuroscience with the up-to-date physiology with the craving alcohol or sugar craving brain. The body is depleted. | #014: Parental Strategist Shares the Nurtured Heart Approach with Lillian Reekie | 01 Feb 2023 | 01:08:59
“It was really dysfunctional. Our home just felt like I just wanted to cry everyday because our youngest son was pushing all the buttons. I was his favorite toy which is a nurtured heart terminology so I got most of the flack. He pushed all of my buttons and I pushed all of his buttons purely because we didn't know what we didn't know that we were parenting upside down so badly. ” Lillian Reekie
In this episode, Lillian Reekie's Nurtured Heart Approach (NHA) educator shares he passion for education and how her career in childhood education morphed through her parenting journey. Lillian’s son went to 5 different childcare centers due to oppositional behavior and complaints. Lillian authored a book on food additives and was known as the supermarket detective. “A guide to making your home a happier and healthier environment”. How Lillian and Andrew recognized that they were parenting totally incorrectly after watching a VHS tucked into the back of a bookshelf by Frank: How to Handle the Revolting Child. 99.97% of parents are parenting upside down, they have all the love in their hearts the best parent they can be, however, we bring into our relationships generational stress and trauma. We are our children's favorite toys, they are seeking connection and know what button to press. The three stands of the nurtured heart approach are: Absolutely No, Absolutely Yes, and Absolutely Clear. Our portfolio of not being good enough, and always getting in trouble, means that this is the self-talk we carry through life, in our adult relationships, in our career choices, with Nurtured Heart Approach we build our child's inner wealth and portfolio of beliefs.

| #013: Reset, Recharge and Reprogram your body and mind with Global Feel Better Institute Retreats with Jackie Bowker | 25 Jan 2023 | 00:26:54 | |
“Our gut drives our behaviors, we are barely human, we have 20,000 human genes, which is 2/3rds of the amount of genes as a flea which has 30,000. We have 40,000 species of bacteria, 2 million genes, our bacteria, fungi, protozoa, parasites covers all of our body, they are even finding bacteria in our breath now, it controls our thoughts, our heart beating, our lungs, the way we walk, blink, so we have to look after our gut” Jackie Bowker In this episode, Jackie shares how she fused her learnings to become a mind, gut and nutrition expert and CEO of the Global Feel Better Institute. Jackie shares how after discovering Psyh-K (energy psychology), then in a conversation with Dr. Bruce Lipton on her podcast Feel Better Now she found a missing link in healing that ‘Our thoughts become our reality”. Jackie then fused functional nutrition and Phsh-K to reprogram the body using both the mind and the gut. Our neurotransmitters most of them are made in our gut lining, for every message the brain sends to the gut, 9 messages are sent back from the gut to the brain. Serotonin and dopamine are made in the gut lining. Common health roadblocks Jackie sees in her practice: 2. What is going on in your gut; 3. Take one step in front of the other (find your primary care team) Global Feel Better Institute started health retreats in 2022 and supports participants to remove the layers they wish to need to achieve their goals in a compact environment where they are able to focus on themselves. The collective energy of the group was very powerful. The retreats are for you if you are looking for a rapid transformation to reset and reprogram and neutralise limiting beliefs and self-sabotaging behaviors in a short space of time. | #012: Fermenting is Fun with Tim McNeilly | 17 Jan 2023 | 00:50:51
“It sort of introduced me to the whole concept of food combining and the fact that what we are putting in our bodies actually affects how we operate and how we live and how we feel and how, you know, just everything. You know, you talk about the gut-brain link and. All our emotions and you know, a lot of hormones are produced in the gut and it's just like a matter of just taking small steps and working in a direction and not having any desired or specific outcome, but just trying stuff on and seeing if it works. If it works, great, keep going that way if it doesn't try something else Just start on your healing journey” -Tim McNeilly In this episode, Tim helps to reeducate health-conscious people about fermenting, while all the way making it FUN. Certain strains of bacteria are missing from our diet that are paramount to our health and wellbeing. Fermented foods support this reinoculation of the gut to support wellbeing. Start slowly and navigate a fermented food that is right for your body. Meads, tonics, sauerkrauts, kefir, villi – all part of Tim’s toolkit in his training on how to ferment and how this has taken him from craving foods that don’t support him versus foods that nourish him moving consciously to another place. Humans have evolved to support the bacteria, not the other way around. The structure of modern medicine has lost its focus and its been sidetracked away from western or eastern medicine. | #011: Neurology – How a Human body works with Robert Sher | 10 Jan 2023 | 01:01:34
"The symptoms are really your body's way of telling you something's not working properly. It doesn't really matter what the symptoms are. It is just saying the Nervous system can't talk. It doesn't have English. So it's the language of the nervous system is actually to give you symptoms saying I'm not functioning as well as I could. And then when you get more symptoms, it's really just saying, “Hello, you're not listening to me.” So, it starts screaming." - Rob Sher In this episode, I speak to Robert Sher about Neural plasticity the creation of Neurological Networks – a process which creates new pathways in the body to restore health. We talk about where the nervous system does not adapt correctly, this is where illness or symptoms begin. Literally a feedback system of the body which then needs to be interpreted. We cover off that not all muscle testing is the same, and Rob’s system for muscle testing is fascinating as it enables powerful detailed outcomes based on the specificity and percentage outcomes that he asks for. We chat about dysfunctional breathing and the role this is playing in Human Health. Rob is a humble genius in this field and explains so effortlessly, how easy it is to bring the body into balance by understanding the framework of networks within the body. Highlights & Resources:

| #010: Finding more capacity with Spinal Flow with Sue Penfold | 03 Jan 2023 | 00:39:09 | |
“My ideal client is somebody who is ready for that level of connection, ready to make the changes that need to be made for them to support their health, and ready to connect within, because if you are not ready for that, you are not really ready for spinal flow, as that is what spinal flow is all about, it's about developing that connection within your body, trusting your body, trusting that we do have this innate intelligence, this life force energy, and it's all about bringing us back into balance, bringing us back into homeostasis, our body is working really hard to bring us back into homeostasis, sometimes it needs to form some protective mechanisms to support us, to keep us alive today that throws us out of balance, it's like the foundations of nutritional therapy, bring the foundations into balance and you bring the body into balance, bring the spinal flow gateways into balance, and you bring the body into balance” Sue Penfold In this episode, we speak to Sue Penfold about how she pivoted to Spinal Flow after recognising that we have everything within us to heal. In the clinic, Sue monitors the wave through inhalation and exhalation whilst her clients undertake spinal flow. Imagine a therapy that engages your innate intelligence to flow like a wave throughout your spine and body. One that allows you to connect within while experiencing the gentle release of stress, pain, and trauma. These layers are peeled back one at a time, at the exact perfect moment, when your body is ready to let them go. While receiving this incredibly gentle technique, your body relaxes and the mind quietens. You drop down into a deep parasympathetic state where your own healing potential, as an energy force, flows intelligently. At that moment it knows precisely what your highest priority needs to be addressed. It could be a pain, chemical toxicity, or stored trauma. You may feel an emotion arise. One that is trapped and possibly holding you back or causing pain. You feel it, acknowledge it, release it and it is gone. There is no need to analyse, discuss or even know where it came from. All you need to do is express it and let go. This is the experience of the Spinal flow technique. Every session is unique as all humans are unique. But everyone that experiences the spinal flow technique say the same thing. They are more relaxed, and more at ease with less stress, pain, and tension. With the surprising bonus of feeling more empowered and self-assured. The spinal Flow technique is a modality developed and founded by an Australian Chiropractor, Dr. Carli Axford. It is based on the principles of chiropractic care, the science of the nervous system, the philosophy of our body’s innate intelligence with the ability to self heal, and the art of touch. | #009: Regenerative Agriculture and Human Health with Mike Parish | 27 Dec 2022 | 00:55:32
“State and Transition - your landscape is in a certain state, and that state is being created by the management that has gone on in that land. So all the weeds and all the diseases and pests that are on that land are basically coming there because you've created a state through management they thrive. So when you change your management, it transitions to a state that those things don't like, and so they move out of that system. And so that's how I related that then to human health. When I did my human health talks, I basically said this is exactly the same as a human body as you would when you're working with a landscape” Mike Parish. In this episode, we speak about Mike's history in conventional agricultural and animal management practices where he identified that they were treating the symptoms experienced, but not the actual cause. These pursuits felt relentless and as an observer in the 60’s his father used 6 chemicals, however in Mike's career, this grew to 40 chemicals being used. This is where Mike recognized ‘Things were wrong’ and the advice sought from experts was conflicting. Mike shares his decision-making philosophy on how to create happiness in your life which is how he decided to manage farming holistically. These principles have enabled him to be successful in his life. Multi-species farming supports soil health, which in turn creates a symbiotic system creating more carbon in the soil when managed properly. | #006: Nutrient density & resilience derives from pastural diversity with Rob Lennon at Gundooee Organics | 07 Dec 2022 | 00:32:39
“Resilience is derived diversity” Certified Organic perennial pasture raised beef is the future of protein. Gundooee Organics is the Delicious produce awards 2021 State Winner and in this episode, we will learn how to farm more than organic adopting regenerative principals for ultimate nutrient density. Rob Lennon is a cattle farmer that produces soil microbes which create a living soil that grows deep rooted native perennial pastures that the cattle eat. Rob breeds second cross wagyu angus certified organic for almost two decades. The wagyu becomes flavorsome due to the perennial pastures which Rob has supported to enable animal feed diversity for maximum nutrient density. Plant availability, plant palatability, nutrient density and plant digestibility as a cattle farmer leads to resilience. Gundooee Organics is all about education, what to ask the table staff, counter staff at the butcher, or online, he is passionate about educating people as to ‘why they should be paying more for their food’’. Food is not simply a gut fill. In order to get living soil back, and what Rob loves about organics, is understanding systems and passively and patiently working with them and watching them develop and you create an environment for what you want in a positive way rather than killing what you don't want in a negative way. And it's a function for life as well. It's a lot more positive way to live, generally, to be doing more positive things. Highlights & Resources:

Luke and Pia Winder from Tathra Place are farming in a way like no other in NSW. Luke has created an Eco system within his 100 acres that includes rotating the animals aggressively to make use of perennial pasture growth and allows them to take advantage of pathogenic clashing between species, so no pharmaceutical inputs. Quail, duck, chickens, pigs, and lamb – all moved frequently to enable them to regenerate the soils. Where is our food coming from? Do you know who is growing your food?? We all have relationships with our bankers, lawyer, dentist, etc, do you know your farmers?

| #003: Self Regulate with Organ Meats: Lauren Stewart | 16 Nov 2022 | 00:28:09 | |
Lauren Stewart shares how she became an advocate for Organ Meats and how she stumbled into this space through her own health adversity. Laurens's health road started initially with looking at how she felt with food, then what she was putting on and, in her body, including the investigation of ingredients in pre-packaged foods. With a variety of different dietary solutions she explored, that worked initially, until it didn’t. Lauren shares how we are the only species in the world that has confusion about what we should be eating each day. When Lauren came off oral contraception after regularly consuming this for 14-ish years straight she experienced 9 months of amenorrhea (period absence) alongside cystic acne, anxiety and hair loss and digestive complaints. With no break or time off this prescription, admitting that she did not understand what the pill’s role was, and how long she had shut off her ovulation for such a long period of time. After starting to consume organ meats, brains, bone marrow, liver, tongue, thymus, heart, and kidney – within about 6 weeks her period returned, skin cleared up, 90 days her cycle was regular (every 26-28 days), hair regrowth with curls, which she continued for a year with continual benefit. We talk about the tools Lauren used as part of her healing road alongside Nose to Tail Nourishment. When looking at also what she was putting on her body, in her body, and in her environment. Could it really be as simple as ‘just food’. | #002: Mould and our home toxins and Leading a Low Tox Life with Alexx Stuart | 09 Nov 2022 | 00:39:59
By true definition Alexx is a coach, creating change one family at a time. In this episode we explore her traumatic symptoms experienced with mould illness and how she learnt to retrain her nervous system to deal with the PTSD of this health crisis. I met Alexx Stuart at Jo Whitton’s cooking retreat in the northern tablelands 5 years ago, Alexx was presenting as a guest speaker and her subsequent guidance has been catalytic on my healing road for my awareness of the planet, my awareness of what I'm putting on my body, how a lot of the ingredients in beauty and laundry products affect our entire hormonal system. Alex’s online programs speak to how to slowly make changes in your home, she makes recommendations on alternative brands you can slowly swap out, one room at a time. At 28 years old Alexx after not having her menstrual cycle for a few years, she was told by the GP that she had potential early onset menopause and PCOS.
