Embracing Recovery as a Journey, not a Struggle...10 Apr 202300:46:49

In this podcast episode, Sean Dustin interviews Jack Allen Levine, an addiction specialist, author, and serial entrepreneur. Sean introduces Jack and highlights his success in various businesses. Jack shares his story and mentions that he had a middle-class upbringing with loving parents. At 16, he started smoking and went on to use drugs such as pot, Quaaludes, cocaine, and Percocet. Jack reveals that his addiction didn't lead him to prison, but some of his choices and decisions could have. Despite his struggles with addiction, Jack managed to graduate from Syracuse University and build a successful career in advertising. Jack has embraced the recovery lifestyle and sees it as a journey and adventure, rather than a struggle. He emphasizes the importance of plugging into the recovery lifestyle and having sober friends, and compares addiction recovery to being traded to a different team. He acknowledges that there are emotions that he now feels that he used to mask with drugs, but overall, he feels that his new life is so much better than his old life of addiction. He advises people struggling with addiction not to make promises they may not be able to keep, but instead let their actions speak for them. Jack is also involved with Louisiana Addiction Research Center, which is studying psychedelics as a potential treatment for addiction. He hopes that psychedelics can be a cure for addiction, but acknowledges that it's a long road and that not everyone will be able to afford a trip guide. Moreover, he questions whether it's really a one-time or two-time treatment, or if it's a continuous treatment for the rest of a person's life, in which case it may replace one drug with another. However, Levine believes that if medically assisted treatment such as Suboxone or other treatments keep people alive and able to seek help for their addiction, it's better than having them dead from overdosing. At the end of the day, the most important question is whether a person wants help. Levine believes that there are seven ways out of drug addiction and alcohol addiction, and that there's hope for everybody who wants to recover. Jack and Sean move into a discussion on how mistakes and relapses are not the end of the world in recovery. Levine points out that we should look at our hearts and strive for a gold standard, but not beat ourselves up over mistakes. Instead, we should take it as an opportunity to reassess and see what is not working in our recovery program. Levine stresses the importance of following the recipe for recovery and trusting the advice of people who have been sober for a long time. He emphasizes the need for surrender, which is a sign that someone is ready for recovery, and to follow the advice of those who have been there before. The conversation ends with the idea that the people we may not initially like are usually the ones who will help us the most.

#108 A Conversation With Adam & Debra From "Debra Gets Red Pilled Podcast"...23 Feb 202100:54:57
Adam went down the rabbit hole a long time ago. Debra has been blinded by the mainstream media and the Democratic Party. Join this mother in law/son duo on their uncomfortable quest for the truth.  * In this episode I'm having a conversation with an unusual podcast duo from the "Debra Gets Red Pilled Podcast". Debra is Adam's mother in-law and she is from an affluent part of the San Francisco Bay Area that leans left. * Adam is an alternative media consumer and publisher that has alternative perspectives and subject matter experts on his show to expose Debra to another side of the narrative. * It's a great show! I was a guest on their show back in mid December of 2020. I really love the dynamic of the two hosts. The subject matter of the episodes is engaging as well as the authenticity of the content and hosts is refreshing. Debra's willingness to hear a different side and listen to non MSM ideas gives me hope for the left leaning Boomers out there. * * You can find the "Debra Get's Red Pilled Podcast" here: * Twitter: https://twitter.com/DebraGetsPilled * YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCW8rgh2tbJUevi761MVKskQ * iTunes: https://podcasts.apple.com/.../debra-gets.../id1529830406 * Spotify:
#107 David Didn't Let His Circumstances Define How His Life Turned Out...22 Feb 202100:50:14
In this episode I have invited one of my fellow Toastmasters to join me on the show to share a comeback story with you. The first time I heard David's story was in his icebreaker speech at one of our meetings and one of his first assignments as a Toastmaster. * David's story was so compelling to me because it told a story that was similar to my own. A young man making bad decisions that have consequences. Some of the choices led to jail and some of them led to homelessness. * Ultimately there was a point in his life when the circumstances didn't direct his choices. His choices started directing his outcomes which led to who he is today. A successful real estate investor, a licensed CA real estate agent, a husband, and a father. * * Here is a short bio: * My story is one of many that you hear so well. I was first arrested at 13, went to jail at age 15. I dropped out of high school, started running the streets, and was a teenage father. I always thought that was the only life for me. Bottom of the barrel. A few years ago things started to change when I made the decision to change. I am now a real estate entrepreneur who invests in emerging markets across the country. I am a licensed CA realtor and started investing in real estate in 2016 by renovating properties and reselling them for a profit. I would like to tell my story to let people know that any dream is possible. You have to believe and accept it with full conviction. Whatever the mind can conceive it can achieve. * * Please Help Support My Vision Here: * If you like what I'm doing and creating and have been wondering how you can get involved and help support my vision. #106 Paul Kratsas sentenced To Life W/O Parole In 1992 For A Non-Violent Drug Conspiracy Charge...18 Feb 202100:49:53
In this episode I will be talking to Paul Kratsas about his story that starts in 1990 when a drug deal went bad. Paul's last drug deal ended in him being shot in the face, robbed, car jacked, and being arrested in the hospital as the perpetrator of a crime. * Paul was sentenced to life with out the possibility of parole for one count of conspiracy to sell 5 kilos of cocaine even though there were never any drugs present at the scene of the instant offense, or anywhere else for that matter. * Paul refused to take a plea deal and went to trial and and lost. He was punished with a life sentence that the judge didn't want to give him, but his hands were tied. In 1994 when the crime bill was passed it doubled the mandatory minimums for drug offenders and took the judges discretion away from them in sentencing. * On February 5, 2021 Paul received a compassionate release from federal prison due to the first step act that was a bipartisan criminal justice bill that was signed into law by President Trump in December of 2018. Below is the section of the law that pertained to Paul. * Title IV makes a variety of sentencing reforms. Section 401 amends the Controlled Substance Act (21 U.S.C. § 801 et seq.) to constrain the application of sentencing enhancements for defendants with prior drug felony convictions by redefining “serious drug felony” and “serious violent felony,” to reduce the mandatory minimum sentence for a second violation from 20 years to 15 years, and to reduce the mandatory minimum sentence for a third violation from life to 25 years. It makes similar revisions to the Controlled Substance Import and Export Act at 21 U.S.C. § 960(b). * * Please sign these petitions: * Petition for release:
#105 Abusive Relationships: There is ALWAYS a Way Out!15 Feb 202100:50:56

00:00 Sean introduces(the wrong way) author, speaker, podcaster, performer, creativity coach, and second-time guest on The Nowhere to go but Up Podcast, Adrienne MacIain. Sean calls himself a d*** and Adrienne jokingly calls the whole world a d***. She explains the premise of her book and how it took 20 years to write. Self-victimization, a personal account of an abusive marriage, and helping people out of difficult situations are the main themes of her book. “No matter how far you’ve gone down a wrong road, turn back”. Sean is amazed that Adrienne has been to West Africa and she explains a little bit about her experiences with their hospitable culture. She continues that every culture has its upsides and downsides and where she visited, they don’t treat their women particularly well. She elaborates on the unfair and unbalanced dynamic of men and women there.

*

06:50 During her visit to Africa, Adrienne felt like she had to do “crazy things” in order to get by, giving her an enormous amount of empathy for these victimized women. She was able to get out of her abusive situation, but most of the time these women are already stuck from childhood. She further explains the physical and mental abuse they’re afflicted with. Adrienne spreads awareness about the people who think they can’t leave abusive relationships because of the Coronavirus. She lets people know that no situation is impossible and there are people and places that can help.

*

11:35 Sean speaks on a man’s tendency to be jealous and manipulative, driving them to control their partner’s friendships, make certain people off-limits, and threaten them with consequences. Adrienne gives an anecdote from her book; she was shocked to have witnessed a friend get hit in the face with a brick by their husband. American culture is tied in and how patriarchy and rape culture are normalized to a bizarre extent. Sean reiterates rumors of sexual deviancy with current and future presidents and how we’re forced to choose between the lesser of two predators.

*

16:15 Adrienne elaborates on the cycle of generational trauma that gets passed on with spousal abuse and reflects upon a horrific memory from childhood of her parents fighting. She wants to set the example for her daughter to never see her get disrespected so that precedent can be instilled in her as she grows up. Sean admits to having a past of being verbally abusive and states that mental and emotional abuse can be worse than physical abuse. Adrienne adds to that by touching on gaslighting, violence, and living in a constant state of fear.

*

20:25 Sean talks about his last girlfriend, how he would see his own abusive actions similarly depicted in movies they’d watch together and wondered if she was connecting the dots. He breaks down, in layman's terms, how explosive arguments play out and that he was the one that felt he had to end the relationship because of himself. Adrienne points out that “it takes two to tango” but we ultimately are responsible for controlling our own behaviors. She also details confrontations with her ex-husband and the peculiar way in which he would react in certain situations. Sean compares a specific thing he did to the “NBA flop.”

*

24:40 Sean admits the guilt he has felt knowing his past abusive tendencies were only continuing the patterns that he witnessed as a child growing up. He emphasizes how the importance of childhood is immensely undervalued and ages 0-13 are the most pivotal times to set a good example as a parent. “You’re raising f***ed up kids that are just going to create more f***ery in society.” According to Adrienne, the best examples that you can set

#99 Childhood Trauma | Depression | Anxiety | Empowering Women | Kayla Matsoukas02 Feb 202101:02:53
Kayla's Bio: * My story isn't exactly pretty, or glamourous, just real and raw! I was a young parent who let my childhood trauma consume me (who hasn't at some point) and I ended up hitting my rock bottom. I was severely depressed/anxious, did a lot of drinking and drugs, very unhappy and feeling like life happened to me. After a whole week of thinking about suicide I listened to a podcast(over and over) and it truly changed my life. after that I started taking my life back and taking Action. I became a happier, healthier, less depressed /anxious, mompreneur who truly believes life happens FOR us, not to us! * * From letting my past define me and really learning that I control me and taking my life back, I now help others take ACTION of their life! I provide them with tools and resources to do this and become the best version of themselves. For the longest time I let my depression and anxiety take complete control over my life, not getting out of bed, not sleeping or sleeping too much, not showering or showering all the time, you name it I did it (including drinking and drugs -when I didn't have my daughter there). With all those negative thoughts that came along with depression/anxiety, I never understood that other people don't think about suicide. I actually thought we all thought about it. I also never realized how powerful our mind truly is until I started studying the brain. The more I studied the more I changed my life and I just knew I had to help more people, that is when I created Action Coaching. I am an empowerment coach who helps others create the confidence they need to become the best version of themselves by recognizing those negative underlying beliefs and retraining the brain on how to make new healthy lifelong habits. I focus my coaching on routines, and daily habits while working with other coaches to be able to help in all areas of life! * * Action coaching led me to join a second business venture to help others even more. I am a co-founder in the Women Rise Collective with my best friend Jody. We help empower other women to RISE together. We have a private online community where others share their stories in a judgment free place of safety and share all the incredible things we have to offer to help each other grow. #98 Brother's Suicide | Adolescent Sexual Abuse | Mental Health | Virtual Reality30 Jan 202101:07:02
In this episode I am having a conversation with Nate Glover. I met Nate when I posted in a Facebook group that I belong to for a virtual reality poker game that I play. I wanted to record an episode while playing poker. That idea didn't really work, but Nate started listening to my show and reached out and asked to be a guest. Below is a little bit about Nate and why he reached out. * In 2006, I lost my brother Jason to suicide. He was 19 years old. He suffered from paranoid schizophrenia that stemmed from him being sexually assaulted by a family member when he was 15. * Everyone knows someone that is struggling with depression, but they often don't know what to do or what to say to help them. * I feel it is important to recognize that mental anguish is no different that a physical ailment, such as cancer. * I'm proud of how I got through some incredibly difficult times, and how I've learned from them. I feel more prepared as a parent, and as a friend to anyone who is struggling with depression. It is one of my life goals as a Humanist to use what I've learned in life to help others. * Nate's Blog: https://nateglover.blogspot.com/ * Nate's Twitter: https://twitter.com/TheApostateNate
#97 Wrongful Conviction|2009 Illegal Foreclosures |Corruption |Cover Up |Dr. Carmen Johnson Ph.D.28 Jan 202101:15:19
For the past five years, Carmen R. Johnson, Ph.D., has been fighting for exoneration by judges and the courts. She has gone all the way to the Supreme Court with no remedy and she is now back in the appellate court, continuing to seek justice as of August 24, 2020. Carmen stated, “Even though I am still fighting in their courts, I do not see a remedy for me. I understand the difference between exoneration and a pardon. Based on Article 72, I am asking the President to look into my case and grant me a full pardon. Only the courts can decide to exonerate me and I have no faith in that system. I am not asking for forgiveness, however, I am asking the President of the United States for justice, by way of a full pardon.” * For over twenty years, Carmen had been a successful businesswoman in Maryland. She ran a for-profit business that offered credit restoration, debt negotiations, household budgeting, preparation for bankruptcy and did loans by paying off people’s debts. She reported these loans and services to the credit agencies. The non-profit taught financial literacy to the youth. She sat on countless organization boards. With one role as housing chair of the Maryland State Conference, NAACP. Carmen was investigating foreclosures that ravaged through the black community after the financial crisis of 2009. In her campaigns, she requested a moratorium on those illegal foreclosures and she even drafted bills involving lost notes. She received countless phone calls from power brokers in Maryland to stop this narrative. She was ordered to announce publicly that there were no illegal foreclosures in Maryland and she refused. * In March of 2011, her home and businesses were raided. However, when she talked to the prosecutor, she was told that no laws, statutes, or codes were broken and she was relieved. In July of 2014, men with guns appeared at her home in the early morning. They seized all her tax paid assets and called them “substitute assets.” They told her that she was not cooperating and they took her to jail. She was indicted on 24 counts of mortgage, bank, and wire fraud along with 14 other people. She only recognized 2 Real Estate Agents and she had not seen them in over 7 years. She did business with mostly real estate agents, mortgage companies, and major banks for years by offering their clients services and paying off their debts. Carmen was a victim as those banks, mortgage, and title companies were, but they were not implemented, not even the real estate companies those 2 realtors worked for. Her attorneys tried to use coercion, force, and intimidation to obtain compliance with the 3rd Assistant State’s Attorney to take a PLEA. Even after suffering a nervous breakdown, Carmen refused to take a PLEA. *
#96 Research and Cartel Discussion with Duke Scholar, Ruxandra Popavici, Ph.D26 Jan 202100:45:20

Ruxandra's Bio:

*

Rux is currently a postdoctoral researcher at Purdue University. She has conducted research with farmers in Mexico, the Peruvian Andes, and the United states. She specifically looked at how climate change affects farming practices, and at what factors motivate people to adopt environmentally-friendly behaviors and technologies. In this episode, she shares the challenges she overcame during her PhD, and how these challenges made her a better researcher.   * 00:00 Sean introduces Ruxandra Popavici, a Duke scholar, and they open with a discussion about the challenges of working in this new, virtual world in the field of education. With this new concept of working remotely, worry is expressed for current and future generations learning in disconnected, isolated environments. She also explains the process of meeting with a professor playing the role of an advisor who mentors students trying to acquire their PhD.

*

03:00 Ruxandra expresses the crisis she faced in the midst of trying to get her PhD and the confusion and lack of motivation she battled to complete her work. The committee of advisors that were her oversight sensed her struggles and deemed her inadequate for the program. She felt that the more she kept trying, the more her work was rejected, and some professors displayed a bizarre amount of disinterest in helping her or even communicating with her at all. She felt that her world was crumbling apart because she was told her work was never good enough, while going through a separation with her ex-husband at the same time.

*

06:30 She is a social scientist, and at Duke she traveled the world researching and interviewing forest owners. She recounts evaluating government programs that were attempting to conserve forests in Mexico. Ruxandra adds that emphasizing creativity in certain research fields can be a catch-22 when there's only so much you can do to set your work apart from similar studies already done in the past. She does however come up with something original enough to earn her dissertation.

*

11:10 Sean makes an inquiry about conflicts of interest, government grants in the medical field, patenting new discoveries, and that tax-payers are the ones funding the research. He uses Dr. Fauci and Bill Gates as prime examples of influence when it comes to Covid vaccines. Ruxandra gives valuable advice about publishing, the pressure it can cause, and outdated research that eventually becomes obsolete. Sean shares his frustration with two students in the Social Justice Field who fabricated a mockery of a story and ended up getting published in a legitimate journal, after publicly stating the whole thing was a joke.

*

17:10 Ruxandra reveals the lack of incentive editors receieve when they review papers and how regular people with no credentials can be chosen for this job. She also reflects on how she went from a well-reknowned student to hitting rock bottom and offers tips to listeners. People won't take you seriously unless you have a clear vision about what you're doing. She replays many instances early on when she lacked focus, made some wrong decisions, and how she fine-tuned her brain towards success.

*

25:00 For the conservation of nature in Mexico, are government programs operating alone more effective than a government partnering with a non-profit organization? Ruxandra elaborates on this topic in-depth, sequentially earning her her PhD. Sean ties in the cartel and avocado farming. Ruxandra portrays the great lengths of precaution she had to take in order to perform her work whilst steering clear of the cartel.

*

31:20 Sean lightheartedly jokes about how sheltered he is and the only thing he's experienced is prison. He recalls a close friend who went through a similar dangerous situation as Ruxandra. El Chapo gets referenced and as a result of hi

#95 I Survived Schizophrenia, Jail, Homelessness, & A Suicide Attempt...22 Jan 202100:59:00
In this episode I am going to talk to Justin Hughes about where he was in his life at one time. Having to overcome homelessness, being locked up, being diagnosed schizophrenic, and ultimately attempting to take his own life. * Fortunately Justin made it through that dark period in his life and can share the story of how he persevered and overcame those obstacles to become a business owner and pulled himself out of that hole and created a stable life for himself. * I believe that it is extremely important to broadcast and share these stories especially in the fragile and tumultuous times we are facing as a population across the world right now. There are plenty of people that are struggling with mental health, incarcerated/ formerly incarcerated, homeless/ or facing homelessness due to the current condition that our country finds itself in with regards to the Pandemic. * Justin's Bio: * "Justin Hughes is the illegitimate son of a high school cheerleader and a rodeo bronco buster. Dealt bad card after bad card in life, he played the hand he was dealt; severe persistent mental illness, abusive upbringing, addiction in the family, and abject poverty, and became the go-to guy for creating business sales opportunities. Now a successful entrepreneur, Justin Hughes is proof that no circumstance is unbeatable." * * If you like the streaming platform that I am using called StreamYard use the link below to sign up with and receive a $10 credit for signing up. I will get a credit as well and that of course will help the show. * Facebook Live-stream:

#91 Being Married to an Alcoholic and the Struggles that come With It...13 Jan 202100:50:05

00:00 Introducing Denise Bernardini, wife of a man with alcoholism. Sean explains the afflictions of both sides of addiction: the addict and the ones affected by their behavior. Denise explains the feelings of blaming her spouse for all their marital woes and coming to terms with the fact that sometimes both parties play a role in the problem. She celebrates her now, ex-husband's, achievement of long-term sobriety and their post-divorce relationship.

*

08:40 Sean elaborates on the glimpses you have of the person you fell in love with that can give you glimpses of hope, only to have destructive cycles repeated. Denise explains dealing with a gaslighting husband whilst trying to cope with death in the family and feeling bound to this man when she discovers she is pregnant.

*

13:00 Manipulation, blackmail and the complete unconsciousness of a spiraling alcoholic is depicted. To try and escape the weight of their burden on your life can sometimes feel like a frivolous task and Denise recounts her daunting journey to find a way out of what can seem like an endless maze of abuse. Property battles, paying rent, insurance and other struggles only add extreme stress to this type of situation, especially while trying to support children emotionally and financially.

*

18:00 Denise finds redemption when she relocates her family, goes to school, earns a degree, and finds stability for herself and her children. Her parents wholeheartedly step in and give her the emotional support she needs. She expresses the guilt and hopelessness of trying to hide her ex-husband’s alcoholism for 14 years. Her unrelenting love for her kids is what kept her driven and motivated. Sean weighs in on staying or leaving in an abusive relationship, considering the debilitating effect it can have on children.

*

27:15 Denise teaches Sean the difference between a trailer and an RV and her vehicular struggles that she faced with her ex-husband. She states you cannot be anyone’s mommy in a relationship and at a certain point the endgame becomes damage control. Sean quote, “I’m gonna love the demons outta ya!”

*

32:05 Denise takes her kids to see their father for the first time after a certain level of harassment but maintains their distance and declares shared custody could never be a possibility. Sean relates his addiction history and personally he chose to distance himself from people he cared about that he could potentially hurt. He recounts past relationships he had with people in active addiction and emphasizes the disbelief that takes place when you see good people fall so far into an abyss. Denise expresses her empathy and extreme sadness she has for addicts and alcoholics but can never come to intellectually understand it. Sean talks about his experiences in Vegas and how it “chewed him up and spit him out”, as well as his relationship with a Higher Power.

*

42:20 Denise reminisces about her experiences with an Evangelical College while getting her doctorate degree and the judgement she faced there in relation to her divorce. She talks about zealots in all religions and the oppression it can create in people’s lives. So I reached out to Angela since I am located in Northern California, and I was able to set up this live interview.

#89 Brian Choi Talks About Social Anxiety & Building Confidence07 Jan 202101:01:15

Highlights:

*

3:15 Sean points out the shortcomings of western medicine and its tendency to only mask symptoms. The title of “social anxiety” and the stigmas attached to it can negatively impact one's mentality further, creating an even greater disadvantage.

*

27:00 “If your mind is on it, you will progress through it.” Michael highlights the importance in building a circle of trust/support system and the costly luxury of paying for a life coach. Even if you are desperate for help, always stay vigilant when people are trying to deceive you or take your money. He explains why statistical data and proof is most important to him when seeking help from a professional. How much does Tony Robbins charge for his services? The answer is shocking!

*

00:00 Introducing Brian Choi

*

01:40 Brian speaks on social anxiety and how its origins were deeply rooted into his high school experience. “The thought of approaching someone and having a conversation with them can feel crippling”. Fear of rejection only perpetuates the fear. Sean briefly touches on online interaction, dating, and getting to know people virtually.

*

06:10 Overcoming pressure of first impressions, getting out of your own way, defeating self-doubt and talking to pretty women are discussed. There are genetic implications with social anxiety and we’re all hard-wired to experience it to a certain degree.

*

09:00 Brian mentions the severity of social conditioning and the negative emotions of inferiority that are embedded in us at a young age. Drawbacks with socialization could potentially be a life-long struggle and usually requires seeking out help. Brian urges listeners to help introverts in structuring a positive reality around them. The phrase “crabs in a bucket” is correlated to unhealthy social environments as it relates to social anxiety. Sean reveals he is a crabbing connoisseur. The pervasiveness of cultural expectations, especially in Korean culture, and the pressures that come with it are pointed out. Sean shows familiarity with K-Pop, explains his perspective odds of sleeping with a woman, and puts it into a business philosophy. “Don’t be cheesy”.

*

15:00 How do you add value to social interactions with women? Authenticity is key and social media’s contradictory highlight reels only showcase achievements, but suppress failures. The importance of experiencing mistakes first-hand and translating them into later success is emphasized.

*

20:20 Everyone struggles with social anxiety and realizing you’re not alone is part of the battle. If you’re having difficulties would you rather hear motivational stories or see concrete evidence of success? Sean ties in fighting addiction with social anxiety and how the effects on your thought processes can be similar. For both, it is imperative that you set your intentions, persevere through inevitable hardships until you see results, and convert what you learn into a lifestyle.

*

34:55 Michael elaborates on the two choices he believes you have when seeking mentorship and weighs the elements of time and money. He also explains the paradigm of money and happiness. Sean discusses his podcasting and business experiences with adversity, setting priorities, maintaining an appropriate workload, and all of the hidden intricacies you only uncover after you start.

*

44:00 Sean reveals his time management strategies, distinguishing between hobbies and passions, adversity you face when mastering your craft, and all the hard work that goes unnoticed. He also spotlights the idealization of profiting off your passion and touches on different business personality types.

#83 David Durocher|The Other Side Academy|Shaina Boe|Behavioral Change|Therapeutic Community13 Dec 202001:16:21

In this episode Shaina Boe and myself talk to David Durocher Who is the Executive Director at The Other Side Academy in Salt Lake City, Utah. Shaina had sent me a link to a TEDx talk that David had done. I was so moved and inspired by what I had just watched, that within 40 minutes of watching it I had found and made contact with David. This episode is the result of or 1st conversation over the phone.

*

After we ended this recording David invited Shaina and myself up to The Other Side Academy to see for ourselves first hand how the program works. We took him up on his offer. Shaina flew up from Florida and I drove up from the San Francisco Bay Area. I arrived first and wasn't sure what to expect. When I pulled up David was waiting outside to greet me and showed me to one of the two guest rooms that he had prepared for our stay.

*

For the next two days we were immersed into the daily functions of TOSA. We ate meals with the students. We were allowed to walk freely and talk to the students ask questions about the program and basically participate as if we were residents there.

*

We were given a tour of the social enterprises that fund the program. TOSA is 100% self funded by the moving company and the thrift stores that are run by the students and overseen by the staff that were former students that graduated and decided to stay on to help give back to the program that saved their lives and taught them how to be productive members of society and no longer a risk to public safety.

*

Here is the thing, this program is a minimum of a 2.5 year commitment if you are accepted. The cost to come here is ZERO dollars to the student, the taxpayers, the city, the county, and the state. The only requirement is a sincere desire to change your life and the behaviors that got you there. I can say that what we witnessed there was amazing!!! I have never felt that amount of warmth, and love from people that I had just met. It's really hard for me to put into words how touched I was. I was often holding back tears from how overwhelming the positive energy I was surrounded with.

*

About TOSA

*

The Other Side Academy is a 2-year self-sustaining residential life-skills and vocational training program for women and men in long-term criminal behavior, drug addiction and homelessness. Students pay nothing to attend. * We are unique in 3 ways. * 1. Peer run. We don’t rely on professionals to ‘cure’ or ‘heal’ us. We use peer accountability in a highly structured family environment. Both students and staff come from the same background. * 2. Self-funded. We’re self-sufficient, generating the revenue we need to cover all of our operational expenses. Running social enterprises is the therapeutic context and vocational training that helps students succeed after graduation.

#82 Suicidal Thoughts|Abusive Father|Parenting|Empowerment Coaching|Kip Brooks03 Dec 202000:58:02

“If there’s really a higher power up there that loves us like I hear; I won’t wake up tomorrow.” This is a prayer my guest, Kip Brooks, said when he was eight years old. Kip joins me today to discuss his life, from feeling suicidal at age eight to becoming a coach with his wife and everything in between.

*

Kip tells me about his childhood with an abusive, alcoholic father, which shaped his perception of what a man should be, along with relationship dynamics. He also discusses his early alcohol consumption, drug use, and stories from school. We then talk about how all of this feeds into his current life as a parent and a coach.
*
Kip currently has a mini course out to help understand where baggage comes from. Him and his wife teach empowerment coaching and have a training academy together. Below You will find a link to a free gift from Kip to you.

*

Kip's Bio:

*

Kip Brooks is a certified Trainer and Master Practitioner of Neuro-Linguistic Programming and holds certificates in Leadership Development, Neuroscience, Root Cause Release, and Hypnosis. He is a best selling author, certified international Speaker, and an Empowerment and Breakthrough Coach and co-founder of Brooks Empowerment Academy along with his wife Marina Brooks. *

Kip has been featured on Entrepreneurs on Fire and was involved in the movie rendition of Think and Grow Rich, the Legacy. Out of 10,000 possible picks, he was chosen as part of a team of 250 coaches brought in by the President of Paraguay to teach transformational and heartfelt leadership to many leaders throughout the nation in a movement called Transformation Paraguay.

*

Things weren't always so great for him though. He had his first thoughts of suicide at eight-years-old. He began drinking regularly and taking prescription antidepressants at age 15. After over a decade of mental and emotional anguish and various drug use and multiple suicide attempts, he finally had enough. He quit cold-turkey and went looking for a better way, refusing to believe that depression was "just who he is." As his children came into the world, they only fueled his desire for a better life, a better way. Then, after the passing of his daughter in 2010, he refused to live in vain anymore and vowed to leave the world a better place because he was here, not because he left it.

*

He's been homeless and heartbroken but instead of being bitter, it's only made him better.

*

At 14-years-old, staring down the barrel of a gun he made a promise that if he ever found a way out of the darkness and live in the light then he would spend his life helping others do the same and now, he's' doing just that.

#80 The Mosiac|Wisdom|Shift Perspectives|Stories Help Heal|Daniel Bruce Levin28 Nov 202001:09:32

“One change of perspective changes everything,” this is what my guest today, Daniel Levin told me. Daniel is the author of The Mosaic, a book about the idea that where someone is at any given moment isn’t where they are at in their life.

*

Daniel discusses changes about troubles from when he grew up to now, seeing JFK in his neighborhood as an innocent child, and how losing both of his parents - two years apart, on the same day - affected his entire life. He also tells me wonderful stories about meeting and listening to people, and about communicating with his developmentally disabled daughter.

*

Daniel Levin can be found on danielbrucelevin.com and themosaiconline.com. His book, The Mosaic can be purchased through his website or on Amazon. Daniel hosts his own podcast, The Mosaic Podcast, which is available on The Mosaic website. He hopes listeners of the show will read the book and contact him.

*

Danny's Bio:

*

Levin walked away from an opportunity to run a billion dollar business, tohitchhike around the world to find happiness and inner peace. He studied in aseminary five years and left one day before becoming a Rabbi and he has livedas a Monk in a monastery for 10 years. As Director of Business Development, he
grew Hay House from $3,000,000 a year in sales to $100,000,000 a year in revenue.

*
Levin is rare blend of businessman and mystic who sees what others do not see.It has been this one quality more than any other that has thrown him into some ofthe most exclusive boardrooms to help companies innovate new ways of findingsolutions when the old ways stop working.

*
He is the author of The Mosaic, a life changing fable that invites people to listeto those others do not hear and to see the situations in their life differently. Tolearn more about Daniel Levin, please go to: www.DanielBruceLevin.com

#79 Prison|Drug Abuse|Triggers|Turning Points|Joe Martinez18 Nov 202001:17:16

Today on the podcast I welcome someone right up my wheelhouse, Joe Martinez. Joe joins me to discuss his gripping life story. From growing up a latchkey kid in San Antonio, Texas, to getting a twenty year sentence for a liquor store break-in, to finally quitting crime and getting clean for his family.

*

Joe also talks to me about his childhood, crimes he committed, shock probation, his turning points in life, major health issues from drug use, and parenting using his life decisions as teaching moments.

*

Joe Martinez is the host of his own podcast, The Talk From Cell Block, where he talks to current and formerly incarcerated people to give them back their voice.

*

Joe's Bio:

*

A man with a year of college (tried to major in English. I got bored)

I had my first run in with the law at the age of 10, and it never stopped. Rarely having to confront consequences for my petty to grand larceny crimes, I never understood the consequences of committing a crime and getting caught and being found guilty, until I was 17, when I took a guilty plea for a burglary and was given a 20 year sentence for it. After that, it was in and out of jail through out my life leading into my late 30’s. Now, I use the time on my hands to try to help expose the justice system for all the corruption that fills the court rooms in the united states, state and federal level.

#191 "Surviving the System: Strategies and Lessons Learned" Thomas FreeMe... Recorded 4-19-202120 Jan 202300:58:58

Hey guys, welcome back to my podcast! Today, I have a special guest, Thomas FreeMe, and we're gonna be talking about some heavy stuff. We're gonna be discussing the criminal justice system and how it affects people's lives.  We talk about how the system is set up to keep people in rather than rehabilitate them. We also talk about how the system targets certain communities and how that contributes to mass incarceration.

We delve deeper into the topic of how perceptions and societal stereotypes affect how people are treated in the criminal justice system. Thomas shares his own personal story of how he was caught up in the hip hop craze as a teenager and how that led to him being accepted into a certain community, but ultimately being viewed as a mockery.

We discuss the lack of investigating that happens within the system and how it just helps to build bigger cases and put people away for longer periods of time. We also touch on the topic of conspiracy and how it's used to put people away for things they may not have even done.  Finally, we talk about the mentalities that people adopt while in the system and how it's often a survival tactic. We also briefly mention Thomas's organization, the Coming Home Coalition, which aims to help men transition back into society after being released from prison.

Overall, it was a heavy but important conversation that I think everyone should hear.  Thanks for tuning in!

#78 Air Force Veteran|Entrepreneur|Tiger King|Burning The Boat12 Nov 202001:16:28

Sean catches up with Air Force veteran and entrepreneur Andrew Turner, who shares the story of how he rose through the ranks of the landscaping game, making it all the way to HGTV.

*

They also get into a variety of topics that many of us have considered since the pandemic flung us into self-isolation. With the newfound free time that accompanies the indefinite closing of public spaces, come conversations about career advancement, the
importance of gratitude, effective ways to silence the world’s madness, and personal development in the face of frightening rates of depression and suicide.

*

How do you meet new people when you can’t be close to people? How do you set sail again when you’ve burned your boat? And how the hell has Carole Baskin dodged conviction all this time?

#77 Wrongful Conviction|Broward County|Innocent Man|HELP!!!|Free Charles Miller07 Nov 202000:57:07
Charles Miller has not had a taste of freedom for over 21 years. He resides in the Taylor Correctional Institution in Taylor County Florida. Charles was charged with murder and sentenced to life without the possibility of parole. * The case documents prove that no murder weapon (gun) was brought into evidence and that the shell casings found around the murder scene do not in any way link Charles to the murder weapon. Through DNA testing, the blood evidence found at the scene belong exclusively to the victim. Out of 38 fingerprints, not one was a match to Charles. * Still, those who testified were incarcerated individuals who received adjusted sentences. Charles Miller left behind the love of his life, Michele Rorie, who still stands by his innocence along with 7 others who can vouch for his alibi. Michele was 4 months pregnant when he was taken from her and their unborn baby. * This family deserves to reunite! #76 Superman1 & 2|Acromegaly|Heavyweight Boxer|Family Legacy|Jack O'Halloran05 Nov 202001:08:30

Our conversation today is something that is both inspirational and powerful, thanks to our guest, Jack O’Halloran. Jack bravely shares his story on how his career on-screen and as a fighter, who’s career ended due to acromegaly, causing depression and eventually alcoholism. Even more bravely, he criticizes the government and the politicians, saying every day there’s taxpayer’s money misused for activities that most Americans wouldn't approve of. He sure knows a lot of secrets, too, including a conspiracy behind Obama’s presidency.

*

Jack talked about his book, Family Legacy. He said this book aims to tell the truth about what happened in America. It is about the political conspiracy driven by Mafia. It is Jack O’Halloran’s fictionalized life, the system he was exposed to as he was growing up, and his relationship with Albert Anastasia and the Gambino family.

*

Jack O’Halloran is known as Irish Jack in the boxing ring. He is also a former actor who has appeared in the movies, Superman II and King Kong. He is now a novelist and Family Legacy is his first book.

#75 Censorship|Act of 1871|Trump|Hijacked Movements|Bill Gates|Truth Seeker Mel K.31 Oct 202001:17:47

Today’s packed episode of Nowhere To Go But Up features someone I know from the YouTube show Union of the Unwanted, Mel K. She joins me to discuss many interesting topics, connecting the dots between them all.

*

Mel tells me about the manufacturing of Covid and how Bill Gates helped to plan the current global pandemic we face. She also talks about how the UN and WHO are allowed to be the only voices on the topic, and how they’re playing against President Donald Trump. I get a lesson on the Act of 1871, and how it radically changed our country. Mel discusses Jeffery Epstein and how hatred for Trump is tied to the Epstein investigation.

*

Other topics include Trump vs. UN, Trump working to save the country from being hijacked, the fake constitution, working at E! and the Kardashian impact, BLM and Antifa being used by Dems, and getting into alternative media.

*

Mel's Bio:

Mel is a Graduate of NYU Film Dramatic Writing Program, as well as holding a BA from NYU in Broadcast Journalism. # 74 The Brave Journal|Corporate World|Imposter Syndrome|Bravery|Vanessa McDonald29 Oct 202000:41:56

Joining me today is coach and author, Vanessa McDonald. Vanessa spent seventeen years working in corporate, starting in communication as an intern and working her way up the ladder. At the top, her learning and growth stopped which led her to leave and follow her own passions. This got her to write “The Brave Journal,” a journal which allows the user to plan for effective goals. Vanessa tells me about her background in corporate, why she left, the origins of the journal, and why imposter syndrome shelved the idea for a few months.

*

We also discuss becoming a coach in a crowded market, where she lives, healthcare in Canada, and how things will change coming out of our new normal.

*

Vanessa's Bio:

*

After 17 years in corporate, I radically changed my life & career to follow my passion and help others follow theirs too. Even though times are scary, I know that with the right mindset and by taking courageous action, there is a bright future ahead for many who are feeling frightened right now. The Brave Journal is a practical guide of the steps that I took to transition out of a 9-5 and become an entrepreneur. I now coach to help others do the same.

#73 The Con|2008 Financial Crisis|Docuseries|True Crime|Eric Vaughan & Cindy Castro DiRusso24 Oct 202000:57:29

On today’s show I welcome two people who worked on a series I find fascinating, The Con. Director Eric Vaughn and producer Cindy Castro DiRusso join me to discuss the docuseries itself, along with the subject it covers, the 2008 financial crisis. We delve deep into the production of the show including how HBO’s The Jinx influenced production, why recreation was necessary, and why it made sense to simplify the message for the audience.

*

We also discuss Cindy’s connection to the financial regulation world, the Obama administration's shortcomings, Hollywood assumptions, the COVID economy, MMT, being too big to fail, not launching on larger streaming platforms, and lessons from the crisis and the series.

*

Eric Vaughn is the director of The Con, an in-depth docuseries investigating the 2008 financial crisis. It is available to stream on thecon.tv, with the first episode streaming for free. Eric has 65 to 70% of The Con season 2 ready if there is enough support for season one, so be sure to buy this season.

*

Cindy Castro DiRusso is a producer and casting director, who did both for The Con. She is also the casting director and producer on the upcoming dark comedy, Worst. Christmas. Ever. It is available for pre-order now on iTunes, and releases on VOD platforms on November 3rd.

#72 Spike Cohen|Libertarian Party|Third Party|End The Duopoly| Are We Really Free19 Oct 202000:36:55

I bring Spike Cohen on the show today to talk about more politics with us, as it will be my first time voting ever. This is the 2nd stop on my mission to figure out which 3rd party I fit into. Spike shared what the Libertarian Party can offer. It is based on the belief that we do best as people when we are the free to create and thrive as a species. He describes the government system as something that dictates how to live our lives and that system is the reason why we are facing problems like increasing police brutality and the pandemic being worst in the United States.

*

The Libertarian Party sees the current system as abusive where government officials are not held accountable for their actions. It aims to dismantle that power so that the freedom and the money that has been stolen are put back where they belong, in the hands of the American people.

Jeremy “Spike” Cohen is a political activist, and an entrepreneur. He is the Libertarian Party’s nominee for VP serving as Jo Jorgensen's running mate.

Show Notes Written By:

CJ Padilla

#71 Author|Former CPA|Millennial Career Coach|Michael Patrick Lewis17 Oct 202001:12:46

Get ready to enjoy some good conversation with your host Sean Dustin and today’s guest Michael Patrick Lewis. This light and informative listen includes topics about becoming an author, career transitions highlighting the Accounting/CPA and Marketing industries. The swarming mess around American politics at our federal and state levels of governments. And of course, no conversation these days goes without poking on aspects of the pandemic. Many eye opening concerns are weighed in regards to pre and post COVID-19 with suspicions of what’s plagued following.

*

Michael, is the author of the book “Vulnerable Career Switcher”. https://www.amazon.com/Vulnerable-Career-Switcher-Individuals-Persistence/dp/173424321X

*

He offers practical tips on how to get your pen to paper by micro managing time segments instead of the traditional thinking; “maybe.. someday, the time will magically come in”.

*

Humm, can’t help but think of random quarantines. Hope someone took advantage of the time to create their version of a masterpiece.

*

Sean and Michael have a few relatable laughs about accountability and how to stop being our own biggest excuses. Michael’s big time tip explains how important his less than an hour commute was key to his success. Daily train trips commuting between New Jersey and Manhattan gave him the undistracted, quiet opportunities needed to put his thoughts onto paper. Creating an indexed timeline for his book that helped him stay focused.  He was able to gradually generate realistic goals and deadlines instead of pre setting expectations. This fluid process helped balance time with his family, social and work activities.

*

Michael also suggests an additional resource to any one attentive and interested in learning more.

https://dorieclark.com/entrepreneurialyou/

*

Michael offers practical ideas for additional books or offsets from original publishing’s that make a lot of sense. The two continued on about social media platforms; their pros and cons, book sales, ease of self publishing and other avenues related.

*

Ending with highlighting the probability of managing multiple streams of revenue until the new career becomes sustainable. Michael pleasantly continues with helpful tips learned through his writing experience.

*

He transitions into discussions of why he chose to be a Vulnerable Career Switcher.

https://www.amazon.com/Vulnerable-Career-Switcher-Individuals-Persistence/dp/173424321X

*

His accounting career, although traditionally essential and industrially secure, was unfulfilling and non stimulating. After several years of numerical numbness in graphs and spreadsheets during his dreaded sixty to seventy hour work weeks prepping corporations for impending tax seasons, he was ready to evaluate his own mental balances. The importance of financial security blanketing his young and growing family weighed heavy on his drive for success. He had to figure out the appropriate steps for his career transition  to achieve a happier way of life for himself and family.

*

Sean and Michael touch on opinions of Artificial Intelligence, their current and future influences on the positions within some industries. The massive automation projects already on scene and speculations for future increase. Michael then talks about what drew him to Advertising and his discussion to select this industry as his second career.

*

Throughout the conversation, it’s definite as to how much our lives are being impacted by the restrictions of the COVID-19 pandemic. Increased frustration swirling around the Corona Virus and

#70 Women|Divorce|Toxic Relationships|Dysfunctionality|Fiona Eckersley15 Oct 202001:21:47

A different kind of woman empowerment. That is how I describe the episode today with Fiona Eckersley. Fiona talks about her book, Fearful to Fabulous: Unlock Your Power, Move On, and Thrive After Midlife Divorce, which she uses for her clients to help them go from feeling confused and fearful of the future to living the best of their lives.

.

Fiona also gets to talking about her own story, how she got out of a pattern where she ends up with men telling her what to do, which always leads to toxic relationships. She said that women like her, stay in those relationships thinking that they can fix it. What Fiona realized was, until she gets out of that pattern, she will not have any meaningful relationships.

.

Toxic relationships are not just toxic to the man and the woman. Their children are affected, too. They can see how the husband treats the wife and they observe that, as the method of mitigation in that kind of situation. Fiona’s son once took her down harshly because it was how her ex-husband treated her.

.

Fiona Eckersley is a confidence coach, an author, and a divorce recovery expert. She works with women in their 40’s who are struggling with the challenges of divorce and fears to move on with their lives. She uses her own experiences and her studies to help these women get on the other side. She has a second book coming out soon.

#69 Macro & Cheese|Real Progressives| MMT| Where Do I Fit Politically| Steven Grumbine11 Oct 202000:57:15

In this In this episode I asked Steven Grumbine Founder of the Real Progressives. Host of the Macro & Cheese Podcast, and MMT activist. I reached out to Steven because I haven't ever voted and wanted to know more about the Progressive movement to see if they had anything to offer me that matched any of my own ideals and thinking. I really enjoyed the conversation and the connection.

.

My next stop in the search for my identity in the current political climate is Spike Cohen the running mate of Jo Jorgensen who is representing as the Libertarian presidential candidate. In case you didn't know there are 3rd party options out there even though mainstream media won't cover them at all in collusion with the duopoly we call our current rendering of democracy. This conversation is scheduled for this week and will publish the following week.

Steven's Bio:

.

Steven D. Grumbine was a conservative Republican who revered Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, and George W. Bush. He was raised with the social belief that no one was deserving of a handout, that everyone must pull themselves up by their bootstraps. Steve’s mother and father had both finished their careers at Ma Bell, and Steve was on track to do the same, working with the company for 17 years. While working at Ma Bell, Steve continued his professional education, attaining master’s degrees in Technology Management (2007) and Business Administration (2008).
.
In 2009, despite his many years within the company, Steve was laid off due to the global financial crisis. Steve, with all his advanced professional education and experience, found himself unemployed for 18 months, and no amount of bootstrap pulling could lift him out. He experienced firsthand the struggles of no longer having secure employment with benefits, while at the same time dealing with a costly divorce, massive child support, and lapsing ability to make mortgage payments.
.
During this period of instability, Steve was introduced to Modern Monetary Theory (MMT), a new perspective that disabused him of the macroeconomic myths taught in his post-grad MBA program. He learned taxes do not fund spending at the federal level and the federal government can create as much currency as it needs up to the nation’s full productive capacity, which showed him how our government’s tolerance of unemployment was a national disgrace. Steve also learned why shameful austerity measures were allowed to continue: entrenched politicians in Congress controlled by big industry donors spreading macroeconomic lies and a public so brainwashed by those lies that they turn on one another instead of demanding more from their government.
.
This revelation started him down the path of educating the

#67 Crisis Coach|Interventionist|Speaker|Author Scott Silverman28 Sep 202001:02:13

In this episode I am talking to Scott Silverman. I was introduced to Scott by his publicist (shout out to Steve Joiner). Scott shares his story with me and we talk about recidivism, prison reform, community re-entry from incarceration, and other issues surrounding those topics.

.

I have a correction to make regarding which president appointed Judge John McBryde. I said it was Trump but he was actually appointed by Bush Senior

.

Here is more about Scott:

.

Scott's Story

I empower individuals and families to move forward past the crisis and onto the road of recovery.

As founder of Second Chance, I worked to break the cycle of substance abuse, unemployment, poverty, and homelessness for 25,000 at-risk teens and adults going through the incarceration system. Today, I lead the team at Confidential Recovery, an intensive outpatient substance abuse recovery program.

But that’s not why you want to work with me.

You want to work with me because I have been there. I’ve been through the fire and come out on the other side. Thirty years ago I was on the edge. Struggling from addiction, considering suicide, and feeling like things were unraveling. I was at rock bottom. The day after trying to kill myself, I flew home and immediately entered treatment. I lived the embarrassment, fear, and helplessness surrounding addiction. And I have come out the other side whole.

Today I get to live life on life’s terms and I get to give back. I am now 35 years sober, working to empower others on their journey. Regardless if they are a high-powered lawyer turning to opioids, an at-risk teen struggling with suicide, an abusive spouse, or a family dynamic that needs to be addressed, I get results.

Additionally, I am the CEO of Confidential Recovery an outpatient addiction program in San Diego, California. Please visit the Confidential Recovery website at https://www.confidentialrecovery.com/.
