220: What All Men Need // Interview With Eric Conn01 Aug 202300:51:06

Eric Conn has a degree in sports journalism. He attended seminary in Louisville, KY and has worked for over a decade in the firearms and outdoor media industry as a journalist. He served as a pastor for several years in a small western town, chief of staff at a conservative media company, editor in chief at Gun Digest Magazine and various other managing editor roles at Guns and Ammo Publications and the NRA’s Shooting Illustrated. He is the husband to one lovely wife and the proud father to three strapping young sons. When he’s not podcasting at the King’s Hall and Hard Man Podcast, he’s probably in the back country chasing elk, mule deer, or bear somewhere in the uncharted territory of the west.

Eric is one of the pastors at Refuge Church in Ogden, Utah. He started the Hard Men Podcast because he was really looking for ways pastorally to help men with the issues we are facing. He’s realized, like many people in our culture, that there’s a real problem with sexuality in general. He speaks on how to present a Biblical answer, but that is also robust, has teeth and is really useful for today’s world.

Eric speaks to masculinity, families and culture so well. One of the things he highlights is men need a brotherhood of friends. Something you see in our world a lot, is that adult men don’t have friends. Men need to be surrounded by other Godly men who can help them in their walk with Christ.

Listen today as Eric shares some practical insights and advice on ways to pinpoint the problem with masculinity and how to help solve it.

218: Our Different Experiences Growing Up In A Family Of 11 Kids: Pregnancy, Postpartum, Motherhood18 Jul 202301:07:55

Today we have a very fun episode for you! I have seven incredible sisters and today I’m here with two of them. These two are currently pregnant with me. Karaline is in her first trimester and Kyla is in her second trimester and I’m wrapping up my third trimester any day now. I thought it would be fun timing, because who knows when this will happen again, and talk about pregnancy, postpartum, big families, having a lot of kids and our vision for family size.

Kyla is 27 and lives in Lexington, Kentucky with her husband Adam. They have two children, ages 3 and 1 1/2 and currently 16 weeks pregnant. They have been married just under 5 years. She is a stay at home mom and also manages and runs Now That I’m A Mother Health.

Karaline is 22 and lives in Eagle, Idaho (just outside of Boise) with her husband Austin. They have a 9 month old baby girl and currently 8 weeks pregnant. They have been married almost 2 years. She is a stay at home mom and also has a home based business with Monat. She loves homemaking and organizing her house. Clean spaces are her thing.

Listen today so you can get a different perspective/response than just mine to some of these questions:
- Did you want a big family growing up? What were your husbands thoughts about it?
- What has been the hardest part for pregnancy, labor and postpartum? Anything catch you off guard?
- What are you most worried about regarding potentially having a lot of kids?
- Karaline, what was the hardest thing about being the middle child?
- How do you feel Mama prepared you for keeping a house and raising children?
- How do you practically do all the things in a day? Take care of kids, spend time with your husband, run a successful home based business, hospitality, etc.
- Have you ever felt unfulfilled in motherhood or like you’ve lost yourself?

Karaline’s quote - “Don’t live a life out of motivation, but out of commitment”

217: Are We Raising Our Daughter To Be A Career Woman Or A Housewife?11 Jul 202301:15:51

Today on the podcast we are answering a listener question: Are you raising your daughter to become a career woman or a homemaker & wife? We thought that it was an interesting question because we have seen this exact same question asked to multiple different people that we follow online and it’s been interesting to hear their responses.

One gal said specifically that she was not raising her daughter to be either and she could be whatever she wants to be. We thought if you don’t have the target in mind, then you’re going to miss it every time. We do think we should have objective goals for our daughters. Today we will be talking about how to navigate that in the 21st century when there are so many career opportunities and obviously being a wife and mother is a big blessing.

The problem is, is that something or somebody or multiples things/bodies are going to be shaping our daughter’s worldview and shaping them into something. If we’re not proactive in doing that as parents, then again, somebody is. It is of the utmost importance that we take the responsibility seriously as parents in being the prominent voice. We don’t want to be the only voice. We want to find other resources and people that can speak into our children’s lives too.

When it comes to our daughters and equipping them, we want them to grow in capabilities and tactics to be able to add value in any situation that they might find themself in. We also need to speak highly of being a wife and mother to our daughters, just like God does, because the voice against them is so loud. When you look at the narrative in the news, media, songs, all sorts of art and entertainment, education, etc, it has this strong narrative that does not promote being a Godly wife and mother. God thinks and esteems so highly of them. As parents, we need to be extremely vocal in advocating and speaking well of those things and equipping our daughters to thrive in any situation!

216: Helping Your Children Engage with Their Faith; Talking about the LGBT Movement w/ Dr. Sean McDowell04 Jul 202301:00:58

Dr. Sean McDowell is a gifted communicator with a passion for equipping the church, and in particular, young people to make the case for the Christian faith. Sean still teaches one high school Bible class, which helps give him exceptional insight into the prevailing culture so he can impart his observations poignantly to fellow educators, pastors, and parents alike. In 2008, he received the Educator of the Year award for San Juan Capistrano, California. The Association of Christian Schools International awarded Exemplary Status to his apologetics training. Sean is listed among the top 100 apologists. He earned a Ph.D. in Apologetics and Worldview Studies from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in 2014.

In April 2000, Sean married his high school sweetheart, Stephanie. They have three children and live in San Juan Capistrano, California. Sean played college basketball at Biola University and was the captain his senior year on a team that went 30-7.

Listen today as Dr. Sean McDowell shares (among other topics) that if you want to pass on your faith to your kids, the effective way to do that and data shows, you have to:
1. Model your faith to your kids. If you don’t model it, it doesn’t matter what you say.
2. Build close, warm, intimate relationship with your kids.
3. Engage them in spiritual, natural conversations, not lectures.
Always look for ways to ask questions and engage them. Affirm that asking questions are great and welcome in the Christian fold.

215: How We Maintain, Grow, and Create Friendships As Parents of Young Children27 Jun 202301:00:14

Do we have friends outside of our family? Do we have church friends? Do we have community? If so, how do we allocate our time accordingly with friends and family? How do we protect our home, but still be a part of the community? Is there some hospitality linked in there?

We have gotten these questions more and more since we have spoken on family. We are clearly advocates of family time. Our interaction with family, whether that be immediate family outside our home, in-laws, our children, and each other, are the highlights and the things that we choose to talk about on this channel. It might sound a little cloistered or people wonder how do we have friendships outside of those familial bonds. We thought it would be fun to share and go through a week/month and share the things that keep us engaged with our church community and local friends and how that looks like in the midst of our every day life.

Our church has facilitated a lot of relational growth for us. I think there is a biblical obligation to the local church body. We are supposed to be there for one another, but I also think there needs to be wisdom for each individual and what that looks like for them, their capacity and bandwidth for their home. It’s about tending first to your primary commitments. You need to look first and foremost to your marriage and to the well-being of your children.

We love everything we get to do right now. Our families get to visit and we are grateful for that. People are coming through town all the time. We get to stay in touch and have fun with them. We go on roadtrips to visit them as well. Our week in and week out friendships are so great! We are richly blessed by the friends in our life right now. God is really really gracious in that area.

Lisa Bass is a mom of 7 (expecting #8 in July) who shares wholesome from scratch recipes, natural living, handmade projects and her simple life in their 1860s farmhouse. Blogging is her family’s full-time gig. She has a podcast called Simple Farmhouse Life where she shares the same thing, but in audio form what she shares on her blog and YouTube channel, Farmhouse on Boone. After the pandemic, she was known for her sourdough. She also does DIY, family recipes, sewing, and is a homeschool mom.

213: Why Gentle Parenting Is Unbiblical13 Jun 202301:11:46

Here we are once again tackling one of those topics that I think at one point we said we never wanted to talk about. We don’t want to talk about parenting from a “here’s how you do it" perspective because our oldest is six and if our children ever listen to this one day, they know that we were imperfect parents. We love them very much and we want to get better and better at this. That said, there are some things that are very, very wrong in our opinion about gentle parenting.

While we are called to be gentle in parenting as Christians, subscribing to the gentle parenting philosophy is not something that we should be pursuing. Biblical parenting is gentle, but gentle parenting is not biblical. The Bible says man is born into sin. As parents, it is our job to make our children aware of their sin and their need for a Savior. It is also our job to train them up in the nurture and admonition of Him.

These are God’s children. They are given to us to steward. When we are going to an expert and philosophy that is completely godless, it is not going to be neutral. We cannot expect it to be anti-god. Satan wants to take our kids. They are the next generation. He wants to take their hearts and eliminate the authority that God has placed in their lives as a protection, guidance and support to them. There is an agenda behind this and it’s not neutral.

Punishment is love and love is punishment when it is done in an appropriate and loving way. The most valuable gift a child can receive is a parent's love, time and support. Setting boundaries, having clear expectations and consequences, being able to share the Gospel with our children as often as we can, being as consistent as we can as parents in love and not in anger is so important. We need to go to God’s Word and His Scripture and continue to learn.

We pray that the Lord speaks to some of your through this and He continues to grow us as parents!

- Ephesians 6:1-3 - “Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise; That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.”
- Proverbs 22:6 - “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”
- Jeremiah 17:9-10 - “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? I the Lord search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.”
- Hebrews 12:11 - “Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.”
- Proverbs 22:15 - “Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.”
- Proverbs 29:17 - “Correct thy son, and he shall give thee rest; yea, he shall give delight unto thy soul.”
- Proverbs 29:15 - “The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame.”
- Proverbs 13:24 - “He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.”
- Proverbs 3:11-12 - “My son, despise not the chastening of the Lord; neither be weary of his correction: For whom the Lord loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.”
- Leviticus 5:17 - “And if a soul sin, and commit any of these things which are forbidden to be done by the commandments of the Lord; though he wist it not, yet is he guilty, and shall bear his iniquity.”
- Job 5:17 - “Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth: therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty:

212: Exposing Our Kids To Evil, Celibacy, Parenting Teens, with Skyler Kressin06 Jun 202301:03:57

I thoroughly enjoyed the interview you are about to listen to with Skyler Kressin. Skylar is local to this community and has become a friend of mine. He really is an example of somebody living out Christian values and it going noticed. I just noticed Skylar a couple years back when we were working together in the same co-working space. I noticed him bringing his kids to work with him and how he handled himself differently. From that point forward, I wanted to get to know and talk to him. Of course, I’ve been able to do that since then so I was really grateful he was willing to take the time and come on the podcast and share some of his story with you. I got so many insights from this conversation and I know you will too!

Skyler and his high school sweetheart that he married 17 years ago, have 6 children whom they homeschool. He is the founder and CEO of Archer Strategic Advisors, a specialized CPA firm offering high value tax accounting advisory services resulting in unmatched performance. He is a director for the society for American Civic renewal and knows more about GK Chesterton than anyone I’ve ever met.

211: Q&A: Circumcision, Skipping Sabbath, Sibling Room Sharing30 May 202300:56:28

Today we get to answer more of your questions. Oftentimes, these episodes turn into our favorite episodes! We get to hear what you’re thinking, some of the concepts you’re throwing around your household and the conversations you’re having with your spouse and then we get to have those conversations here in real time.

If you follow us on Instagram and have any questions you would like us to answer, put them in the Q&A box that is in our stories on Mondays!

Listen along today as we answer these ten questions:

1. What are your thoughts on circumcision?
2. How has your home life changed since decreasing your online work?
3. How do you manage gift givers? We have so many toys and clothes gifted to us and both sides are overwhelmingly gift heavy. What do your parents and family get for your kids?
4. Do you ever get tired of trying to be so intentional?
5. How do you balance it all? I find myself implementing and then failing. Do you guys ever relax? What do you do to relax? It seems like you’re always so productive all the time.
6. How do you practice more self-discipline?
7. Do you worry about boys and girls sharing their rooms together? How to navigate that?
8. Do you think the public sees you as you see yourself? And to what extent?
9. How do you handle Sabbath when you plan to travel? Any guilt if you can’t take it?
10. Do you feel pressure to bounce back quickly after having each baby physically?

210: Should Parents Respect Their Children? Parenting Girls and Boys Differently: Interview with Dr. Emerson Eggerichs 23 May 202301:06:07

Dr. Emerson Eggerichs is an internationally known public speaker on the topic of marriage, parenting, communication and more. Based on over three decades of counseling as well as scientific and biblical research, Dr. Eggerichs developed the Love and Respect Marriage Conference which he presents to live audiences around the country. This dynamic and life-changing conference is impacting the world, resulting in the healing and restoration of countless relationships.

Dr. Eggerichs has authored several books, including the national bestseller Love and Respect, which is a New York Times bestseller, Platinum and Book of the Year award winner, and sold over 2 million copies. Emerson and his wife Sarah live in Grand Rapids, MI and have three adult children. He is the Founder and President of Love and Respect Ministries.

Emerson has blessed Katie and I in a tremendous way. The term love and respect is a common part of Christian vernacular all of a sudden now. It’s a household term in Christian marriages. It’s impacted countless homes. Ephesians 5:33 - “Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.” is the verse that the Love and Respect message is based off. I hope that listening to this interview today will bring as much value to your life like it did mine!

209: Controversial Christian Leaders Who Have Influenced Us // The Pearls, Vision Forum, Bill Gothard, Beth Moore, Mark Driscoll16 May 202301:09:22

Today we’re sharing with you the most influential preachers and Bible teachers in our lives. Some of these may be controversial…ok, maybe all of them…just a warning :)

To list off a few that we discuss:
- Dave Hunt - Shield of Faith ministries
- Douglas Phillips - Vision Forum
- Bill Gothard/ATI/IBLT
- Michael & Debbie Pearl - No Greater Joy
- Lifeway Bible studies
- Mark Driscoll - Mars Hill Church
- John Piper
- Nancy Campell
- Francis Chan
- Voddie Baucham
- The Bible Project podcast- Phylicia Masonheimer
- Canon Press

Overall, we want to be able to draw from a wide variety of resources and tools when it comes to educating our children, of course in Scripture and also growing up in the culture and practical things. Our parents did such wise job!. They didn’t elevate man. They elevated God’s Word. We took everything back to Scripture. We never thought a man, leader, pastor or church was infallible. God is keeping us and He’s the only one keeping us. We never had an idolization of a certain person and watched them fall from grace and thought our world was rocked.

The Lord is so gracious and faithful! So many people have spoken into our lives. These are the big ones that you are going to know about. Obviously there are a lot of individuals that don’t have big ministries or aren’t easy to pin down on paper exactly what they believe. God has been so gracious to bring in different teaching and wisdom to be able to compare and think “I used to think that and now I think this.” It’s all a part of our walk. It’s all about growing in our faith. Some of these teachers we don’t agree with now, but the foundation of their teaching has really helped us to understand teaching that we have come under later in life. It can make you aware of things that you might not have been aware of before or to prove to be a helpful comparison.

The one thing we can point to as being the rock is God’s faithfulness and the infallibility of God’s Word. We want that to be our reference point. When we are reading Christian literature, we want to have God’s Word on our heart and mind and that be the standard. Every single one of these people that we have listed off have one thing in common - they are fallen, just like all of us! It makes you so grateful for the Word of God.

208: finally talking about this . . .modesty09 May 202301:06:50

It’s only May, but summer weather has officially started for us…and skin is out! It seemed like a good time to talk about modesty. It’s something Katie really wanted to avoid talking about for a long time, but she felt really at peace now doing this episode. We’re excited to share with you guys our thoughts on this topic!

Immodesty is distracting. It’s loud either in attitude, dress or deed. When something is loud, it’s not longer giving glory to God. It’s stopping right here with me saying “look, this is my body, focus on that instead of the bigger picture of being here to glorify Christ.” It’s not always the amount of skin being shown. It can be the way the skin is being shown.

The two things we can say with confidence on this discussion of modesty, that we feel like Scripture speaks to, are:

#1 - We should have a heart to desire it. God desires it. We should be growing and maturing in this area. It shouldn’t be how much can we get away with, but more so how do we glorify God? Ultimately, we were created to glorify Him. I Corinthians 10:31 - “Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.” What is our main motivation when we are putting on these clothes and going out in public?

#2 - A man’s perspective has to come into play and into the modesty conversation. Not any man, but a father or husband who loves the Lord and is surrendered to Him. We feel like that is a big piece of the modesty conversation that is missing. Ephesian 5:23 - “ For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.”

I Corinthians 6:19-20 - “What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s."

We hope that after listening to this podcast you look at modesty as a virtue that you want to pursue after throughout the duration of your Christian walk!

Dr. Matt Angove, ND received his medical training at Bastyr University - the premier medical school for natural health training and one of only four fully accredited naturopathic doctorate schools. He did his undergraduate studies at Oral Robert’s University, where he received a Bachelor of Science in Health & Exercise Science with pre-medicine emphasis.

That is why Dr. Matt encourages people to make small, incremental changes to their life routine so that they can enjoy the wave of momentum that comes with consistent victories. The compounding of consistent victories in our life routine is what he calls health accumulation.

205: Succeeding In Family and Business, Living Off Grid With Young Adults with Peter van Stralen from Epic Family Road Trip18 Apr 202301:06:27

For nearly three decades, Peter van Stralen has succeeded in creating remarkable experiences for his employees and customers through his principles of C.A.R.E. leadership. He is a visionary leader that energizes and inspires audiences with his C.A.R.E Leadership keynote, imparting the tools and ideas curated from his business success. In 2015, he and his family embarked full-time on an Epic Family Road Trip that continues today, setting off across North America to work hard, have fun together, and make a difference in the world through caring for others. They are currently living off grid on an island in Ontario, Canada. It is so fun the way they are doing life!

They call themselves a business family. They don’t have a family business; they are a business family. A family business is something that is outside of you, but if you’re a business family, you’re all involved in some way. It’s not such a drain on the family when you feel like you are a business family. It’s a mindset shift. They kept the C.A.R.E model for their travels. They try to leave the people they met and the places they visit a little bit better than they found them.

Listen as Peter shares bits and pieces of his story and what he and his family have done on the road these past eight years. It is nothing short of epic! They really inspire me because they are the perfect example of thinking outside the box when it comes to creating systems and a lifestyle that conducive to a healthy family.

204: Battling Discontentment in Parenting // Practical Ways to Thrive as a SAHM11 Apr 202301:08:51

Today we are going to be talking about battling discontentment in motherhood, more specifically with stay-at-home motherhood. I think a lot of mothers can struggle with this, but especially stay-at-home moms. We will also be touching on discontentment in parenting in general and some mindsets and thoughts around that.

Katie’s natural bent was not one of wanting to rear children and nurture them in the home and be somebody that was pouring into their household. That is now the true desire of her heart. Finding fulfillment in motherhood for Katie started as a conviction that it was worth learning to love and worth learning to do well. That included home management as well as emotional, personal, and time management, hospitality and all the things that go into being a mother.

Having the role in our home as a father or mother is unequivocally the most glorious position we can have on earth. There is no other title that we could ever attain, pursue or desire here on earth that is to be more honored than father and mother.

If we don’t have incredible godly sister’s in Christ that are building us up and saying that our role and what we are doing is valuable and we have people in our life that are telling us that we are making ourself small choosing to stay home, then we need to bring in outside resources. We need to be reading books and listening to podcasts that affirm what we are doing. First and foremost we need to be in God’s Word. That is the ultimate affirmation that you are not wasting your time and energy. There is nothing out there that is going to fulfill you more than you finding fulfillment right where God has you right now. That is something that is so clear and we don’t need to question. If we have children in our home then we are in the center of God’s will when we are mothering those children!

203: Technology and Teens // Biblical Parenting with Jodi Mockabee of The Whole & Healthy Family04 Apr 202300:54:21

Jodi Mockabee is a photographer, writer, blogger, speaker and homeschooling mother of five (ages currently ranging from 11-17) living in the Black Hills of South Dakota. She has a passion for health, wellness, parenting, and homemaking, She is super passionate about parenting and raising her children to love the Lord, as well as raising children that are enjoyable to be around.

The idea behind her book (“The Whole & Healthy Family”) was wanting to do parenting well and really thrive in it. She knew she wasn’t ready to write it until she had some success stories. She wanted to be able to look back and say “we made it through these early years (that I like to refer back to as the trenches) and this is what worked and this is what didn’t" and just be able to share a bit of that now. She also writes curriculum for creative and artistic learning in a homeschool environment.

Listen today as Jodi talks about health in the home, parenting teens, our relationship with technology, building and balancing family culture and navigating smartphones with children in the home. Jodi and her husband, Jason, are being so proactive and intentional in how they are handling their teen relationships and parenting them. They have a lifestyle that is inspiring! It shows the power that can come when you’re intentional in every little aspect of your life. There isn’t a detail that is too small to fixate on when it comes to your family and the operations of the home.

202: Baby #5 Gender Reveal // Pregnancy And Postpartum Q&A28 Mar 202300:50:52

We didn’t find out the gender for our first three babies until they were born. Our 4th was the first one we found out during an ultrasound, which was anticlimactic and lame, to be honest. We weren’t sure what we wanted to do with this pregnancy, so we had them put the gender in an envelope.

We decided during today’s episode if we were going to open the envelope with the gender inside or wait again until the baby is born. We also answered questions our followers from Instagram asked us. Listen along as we answer these 13 questions:

1. What are your plans for feeding your family after you give birth? Frozen meals, easy cooked meals, etc?
2. What are your plans for help during the 6-8 weeks postpartum?
3. Does this pregnancy resemble more like your boy or girl pregnancies?
4. Do you get junk food cravings? What do you typically eat during pregnancy?
5. How has your pelvic floor held up through all the pregnancies? Do you have management or help tips?
6. Do you have mood swings because of hormonal imbalance? Do the vitamins you take help with hormonal and moods swings?
7. Homebirth or hospital?
8. How are you making sure you eat enough, but not too much?
9. Are you nervous or have any fear about labor and deliver? How do you overcome that? 10. How far apart will this one be from your youngest?
11. Any advice for first time parents from pregnancy to birth to postpartum?
12. How do you manage motherhood and your career?
13. Do you feel like you have a new perspective on carrying this baby after your loss?

201: Equipping Our Kids To Defend Their Faith And Engage With Deconstructionism with Alisa Childers21 Mar 202301:02:07

Alisa Childers is an American singer and songwriter. She’s best known right now for being an Apologist. Prior to becoming known as an Apologist, she was known for being a singer in the all-female Christian band ZOEgirl. She experienced a period of profound doubt about her faith in her mid-thirties. She felt uncertainty and didn’t know where to find answers to her questions, or if answers existed at all. She began to investigate her faith intellectually by taking seminary classes and reading everything she could get her hands on. This began her journey from unreasoned doubt into a vibrant, rational, and informed faith.

She has written a couple books that have been extremely impactful in mine and my family’s life, as well as thousands of others. The first one she wrote was called “Another Gospel” where describes the journey she took over several years as she wrestled with questions that struck at the core of the Christian faith and found the truth. This book is very powerful! Her most recent book,“Live Your Truth & Other Lies,” goes through things we say as Christians that are not true and how that affects our life.

If you want to hear ongoing Bible teaching, if you’re interested in the historicity of the Bible and the doctrines of the Christian faith, listen to her on her podcast “Alisa Childers Podcast.” She’s able to network and interview with many experts in different aspects of the Christian faith. She herself is an expert! I highly recommend following her on any of her platforms.

199: What Our Parents Taught Us About Sex and What We're Teaching Our Kids07 Mar 202301:06:11

Today we are talking about how we plan to talk to our children about sex and how we’ve already talked to them about it. This is going to include a brief history of how our parents talked to us about it. We feel we have so much to learn about this and don’t want to run away from the scariness or daunting aspect of this conversation. We want to lean into it and embrace the role that we have in our children’s life especially in this area. Hopefully we can encourage you to do the same with your children.

As a parent, especially with something as crucial as God’s sexual design, you want to be the first one in line to talk to them about this. When you are the first one to tell your child about something, that shapes their perception of the truth and then they compare everything else they hear to that truth that you shared with them first. As parents, we want to be the first ones to share God’s standard for sex and sexuality. Everything else can then be seen in that light, rather than picking up a bunch of ideas here or there and comparing them. We live in a very sexually confused world, and we don’t want our children to be confused.

We want to be the initiators of these types of conversations in our home. We want to put ourselves in the position to be the first people our kids go to for questions, embarrassing thoughts, uncomfortable thoughts or unfortunate situations they find themselves in. We are naive in this area. We’ve never done this before. This area, like any other area, we want to be surrendered and open to the Lord’s leading and open to receiving counsel. We know we do not have it all figured out and will probably have to pivot at different points in time. We need to remain unified together as husband and wife and seek the Lord on this topic, like everything else involving raising our children.

197: Harry Potter, Netflix, and Christian Media with Author and Screenwriter, N.D. Wilson21 Feb 202301:12:33

N. D. Wilson has authored numerous middle grade fiction books, as well as non-fiction, including "Leepike Ridge” (a children’s adventure story) and “100 Cupboards” series. He has written and been the executive producer of a Netflix children’s series called “Hello Ninja.” There are four seasons and it is highly ranked on Netflix. He has a great podcast called “Stories are Soul Food.” It is one of Elisha’s favorite podcasts!

What is a middle grade novel? It is a sweet spot for 5th and 6th graders, as well as those heading into middle school. It is all of the intelligence, none of the hormones. N. D. wanted to write stories that had concrete endings, resolve/resolutions, the good guys won, and also be able to avoid content that he didn’t want to get into naturally and realistically. These stories mark the memories of kids and who they want to be in life, who brands them as they move forward. The last summer of your childhood is where a middle grade novel can hang out. You can have that happy ending in kid’s books. A big part of why he targets this demographic is because it’s a good moment of branding the imagination as kids become young adults moving forward with really great stories. If you love Narnia, The Hobbit, and stories that mark your imagination when you are 11, 12, 13, those stories stay with you in a really great permanent way.

N.D. said that “when it comes to content, what I want is not to protect my kids from things with which they disagree. I want to equip them to disagree. I want them to have clear eyes and a vision for what is good and bad, dangerous and healthy, and thinking how would I change it and what would I do? I want them to be in the driver seat of authority. I don’t want my kids ever to consume any story of any kind like a baby bird, where they have their head back and mouth wide open. I want all of it to be active, engaged, tearing things apart and finding the good and bad. When it comes to narrative, they need to be really perceptive and picky. Pickiness meaning it takes a lot to impress them. They should develop instincts for truth, goodness and beauty and pulling those things out.”

196: When Your Spouse Doesn't Share The Same Values14 Feb 202300:58:28

Today we will be talking about things that come up in marriage that really make you realize you are on a different train of thought than your spouse. You are approaching something from a different perspective. You feel like you are in a more mature place than your spouse when it comes to spiritual or practical things or anything pertaining to life.

Some questions we’ve had people ask is - What do I do if I share this conviction and I want our home to have a lot less media in it, but my husband comes home and he turns on and watches TV? What do I do if I don’t see the value in video games, but my husband comes home and he grabs our 10 year old son to rush off to the basement and play their video games? How do I get my husband to stop drinking alcohol? How do I get my spouse to embrace this value system? Maybe you shared a value system when you first got married and now you’re off in an area and you don’t have the same vision anymore.

From personal experience, what isn’t going to work - nagging, disrespect and disapproval.

If they don’t truly share the same resolve or desire over something, you can’t force that. We all have things like this in our marriage because the Lord is leading us all in different ways. With some people, the change comes sooner and maybe He uses us to infuse that fresh perspective into our spouse’s life. As much as we are one, we have to fight for that unity as we are learning, growing and maturing at different paces all throughout life.

Prayer is the number one thing. The Lord does the work! Every big thing in our marriage up to this point, we cared so much that we really had to pray a lot. The Lord always did the work in each of our hearts. We gave each other space and loved each other with an unconditional love in the meantime. We loved each other no matter what and this differing of opinion was not going to change that. The health or joy of our marriage and home isn’t going to be changed if you don’t agree with me on this issue. We have to give whatever it is to the Lord and have Him change our heart first and be able to let go of what this ideal is in our mind. My marriage is more important than this ideal. There is so much power in prayer!

195: Things Parents Of Multiple Children Overlook07 Feb 202300:58:16

Today we’re talking about some of the biggest pitfalls around big families or families in general, as well as some warning flags that the health of your family may not really be that healthy in the long term. It may show up later if we are not in tune to some of these little stages of development or some pitfalls that we can fall into as parents or overlook when it comes to raising our children. If we see themes that are consistently showing up in families where the children aren’t talking to or resenting their parents as adults, we start to question what can we do when it comes to parenting our own children that sets us up for having a rich, encouraging relationship for life and our children not feeling like we messed them up. These are just some things that have stuck out to us.

It is extremely necessary to be vigilant as a parent day in and day out. If the Lord has given us these children to steward, He is also going to give us the grace and wisdom to be able to raise them. Once we become a parent, we are always a parent. It’s not over at 18 or when our children get married and leave the home. A parent that is always there when you need them is an incredible gift to a child at any stage of life.

We think the number one pitfall in families is ultimately parents who don’t have a humility before Christ and a dependency upon Him and think that they have all the answers. God is the only one who can guide us in this way with our kids. It’s not a program or more people would be doing it right. Parenting is a big, long and exciting journey. It’s filled with so much joy, as well as so much unknown as to what is going to happen. Being aware of these pitfalls and warnings can hopefully help you along the way to be a successful parent in the days ahead!

193: First Trimester Baby #5 Q&A // Pregnancy After Miscarriage 24 Jan 202300:51:22

Today we are talking about how Katie’s pregnancy has been so far with baby #5 and answering questions that you have asked us! This pregnancy has felt different than our other ones since we had a miscarriage this past summer. It is remarkable how that really changed our perspective in regards to the preciousness of life. We have always loved our children, but we were so much more grateful for them when we saw the reality that nothing is guaranteed. Our overall childrearing experience has been so positive in every aspect that when we lost that baby this summer, it really made us have to trust God’s sovereignty in a challenging way. It gave us so much more admiration and respect for people who have been through real loss and challenging things in their life and in the midst of it, they trust the Lord in His goodness and sovereignty.

We are really excited about this fifth pregnancy and trusting that the Lord has given us this baby and we’ll see it through to completion. We’re so happy to celebrate this baby with all of you!

191: Masculine Role Models: Should Christians Listen To Joe Rogan?10 Jan 202301:03:13

Today we are talking about Christian masculinity, Godly masculinity and Godly manhood - what it should and should not look like. Is there a template we can model our lives after as men or is it vague? Is it subjective? Is it to each his own?

It wasn’t until I started having sons that I really started caring about Christian masculinity and what that looked like. As time has gone on and I’ve wanted to put my finger on what leading my sons in a Godly way should look like, it’s become more and more difficult to find role models or teaching that are both Biblically sound and practical.

We need to realize what God has for men. What is the Godly standard? I have been going to the Proverbs recently and it has been so enlightening as to what God wants men to be. It was so empowering to see God’s wisdom on display here in such practical way. All of the Proverbs are so good in regards to being a godly, masculine man, good husband, good church member, and a good father.

Men of God love instruction. They love being taught. They love being given wisdom. They love learning. They love finding knowledge and seeking it as hidden treasures. Going to the Proverbs and seeing God’s wisdom is so practical and applicable. This has been a huge blessing! I encourage you to go and start reading it today!

190: 2022 Didn't Go As Planned // What We're Changing in 2023 // Elisha's Dream Board 03 Jan 202300:52:25

Today, we look back on 2022 and also vision cast for 2023! It’s always fun to be able to look back on what God has done the past year and project where you hope His vision is for the new year.

Elisha also shares his dream board from 2022! What exactly is a dream board?? It is when you sit down and analyze your thoughts, goals, and direction you want to be going in, in the new year. You then find photos to really support and remind you of those things throughout the year, print them out and attach them to a board and place it somewhere that you will see it often.

“A man's heart deviseth his way: but the Lord directeth his steps.” Proverbs 16:9
We are called to plan our way, and also have open hands for the Lord to direct! At the end of a year/season/month, etc., before you start planning, take time to look back and reflect and acknowledge the blessings the Lord gave you and bestowed upon you. Count the wins in your life and remember His faithfulness and goodness!

He is also a successful entrepreneur. Today we talk about shepherding the flock in your home and raising them to love, know and serve Jesus.

188: Hormones, Sinful Nature, and Vices We Are Trying to Overcome13 Dec 202200:51:37

How do you determine if negative feelings are from hormone issues or a sinful nature?

When it comes to feelings, feelings are a physiological response to something. It’s an emotion. It’s in our body. We can’t necessarily control where feelings come from (ie. hunger). It’s not a sin to just feel a feeling. It’s what we do with that feeling that makes it sinful or not. Hormone issues can be a root of a feeling that’s sinful or a feeling that we have to surrender to the Lord, move past and choose not to act on or wallow in. There is a definitive line that is hard to identify for us humans as to when it crosses over to sin. Clearly we are told in the Bible that Jesus was tempted as every man’s been tempted and yet He was without sin. That makes it very clear that being tempted is not sining. It’s obviously a sin when you act out in those things though.

A defining characteristic of Christians is that we are not bondage to our bodies anymore in Christ. We’ve been set free from any captivity that our bodies had over us prior to Christ. Our old man is dead. We are new creations in Christ. We came to Christ in faith and are now no longer slaves to sin, but we are redeemed in Christ’s righteousness. We are learning and growing as Christians every day. The Bible tells us to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior. Growth is a part of being a Christian.

“A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself: but the simple pass on, and are punished.” - Proverbs 22:3

What’s one vice that you’re always praying to overcome? A scary thing a lot of Christians do is categorize various big sins like pornography, drunkenness and adultery and think that you’re good if you haven’t done those things. God’s standard is so much higher than these overt sins we like to categorize.

How do you overcome your vice? If it’s a conviction thing then you need to bring it to the Lord and know that you’re free to walk away from it. There are many things that aren’t a sin unless you make it a sin.

One things that has been helpful is being clear on what we actually want our life to look like and then being proactive and spending our time doing that instead. If you’re passionate and excited about that thing, then you won’t have the time to do those other things that were consuming your life and becoming a vice.

In our Christian walk, we should be thinking about who we are turning towards, instead of what we are turning away from. It is very easy to wallow in the sin of what we did today and the sin of the past. We have to be daily turning towards Christ. The only freedom from any vice is going to be found in Jesus Christ, in what He’s accomplished and who He is!

“Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith” - Hebrews 12:2

187: Courting Vs Dating // What We Would Do Different06 Dec 202200:43:36

What are the benefits of courting and how to talk to family members who think your child should be allowed to date?

We had a 10 month courtship (our first time around) and then a typical dating relationship later. We would not necessarily recommend courting, or at least the way we did it. We don’t want the dating model for our children though either. It’s not to say that a lot of harm can be avoided, but we think it can be so uptight and intense. It can also lead to not developing a great friendship or ground level relationship before you dive into marriage. Getting alone to have one-on-one raw, meaty conversations is a healthy part to getting to know someone before deciding to spend the rest of your life with them.

We think it’s more helpful for the guy and girl to explore a relationship together in terms of hanging out a couple times together, asking people who know them questions, asking each other questions, seeing if your personalities connect, seeing if you have fun together, and ultimately, seeing if you want to make this work in the infancy of the relationship. After you’ve done that and you think this person is worth fighting for, then bring them into the family and start putting them through the paces. I think when you put them through the paces before both people are even sure they want to pursue the relationship, it can just really muddle the emotion and be very stressful on everyone involved.

If you want to be married to someone of integrity, someone who protects, cherishes and is faithful and loyal to you, you would want there to be this open line of exhortation and discernment from the parents as soon as possible. We think courtship can be a beautiful thing, if you realize as the parent that you are the counselor and your adult child needs to make their own decisions and come to you and you don’t try to control the situation. We want to raise our children in a way that they value our opinion and discernment and be able to trust them, trust their standards and desires for a relationship and marriage.

To answer the second question, our parents would say, children don’t need to date. You date to get married. When our child is old enough, an adult and ready to get married, then that’s when they will date. When the time or person is right, then we would definitely encourage them to date. You also don’t need to answer to anyone how you parent your children. You answer to God.

To sum it all up, we aren’t bitter at courting and don’t think dating is great. We are somewhere in the middle! :)

186: Running Our Family Like A Business29 Nov 202200:50:48

Families are high above businesses and other outside ministries, but we can learn so much from how we apply ourselves to business and hopefully get convicted and come back to our home and want to put the structure and intentionality into our home and family.

However, we don’t want to cheapen what marriage or family is by comparing it to a business. Obviously the covenant of marriage is something God ordained. There is a spiritual and holy element to it that a business will never be able to recreate. We’re doing this from the perspective that family and marriage are in a league of its own when it comes to importance and significance for what God has said about it.

Each family, as a culture, will tend to value what the parents value. We’re training our kids with what we do with our time. Companies that run for generations often have had a generational view in mind when they started and the kids were able to take and make it even better, which is the prayer for our family.

185: Things We've Changed Our Minds On: Birth-Control, Alcohol, Eschatology . . .22 Nov 202200:53:30

When a listener asked us, "What is something you've changed your mind about?," it got us thinking that we've changed our mind on a handful of issues and some were pretty big. Changing your mind is a part of growing, especially if the Lord is leading you a different way. The Lord has changed our hearts on a couple things: alcohol, birth control, Christmas, justification and eschatology. We were challenged through the years to go to Scripture, listen to others opinions and determine what we believe, as well as what we think is best for our family.

180: Should Christians Celebrate Halloween? 18 Oct 202200:43:47

Against all odds we've made it through 4 years of doing the podcast without talking about Halloween. But we cracked. We caved. We succumbed. Succame? . . .The pressure got to us and we could not resist taking advantage of this seasonal opportunity to share our personal opinions and convictions on a polarizing holiday. Neither Katie or I grew up celebrating Halloween so we never needed to have a sit down conversation to go over the pros and cons and come to our own decision about Halloween. It was just never going to be a part of our home. But as our children have grown and become more curious about this autumn holiday, Katie and I have needed to crystallize then articulate our thoughts on the topic. We recon that if we can tell Leon, Lucy, Louis, and Lawrence our perspective on Halloween then we should be able to tell you guys on the podcast.

179: Setting Boundaries With In-laws And Family 11 Oct 202200:50:22

A book titled "How To Leave And Cleave" would certainly get my attention and the author, my money. Or the publisher would get the money . . .who pays the agent? Idk. All I know is that starting a life and a home together as a married couple seems to go a little deeper than bank accounts and tax benefits. No, we are not going to break down the mystery of how "two becoming one" works. But we are going to share our experience in both leaving families that have strong, distinct, and in some ways polarizing cultures and creating our own home and culture. We have the great fortune of coming from godly families with countless admirable traits. There is SO MUCH we want to emulate from our experiences growing up in big families. But more often than not, newly weds and young parents would prefer if their new family looked nothing like what they experienced growing up. In either situation, the call to "leave and cleave" and form our own home remains. And I am still waiting to be convinced otherwise that a unified home with a clear mission is more powerful than any organization or individual or the death star.

The Bible Passage Katie was trying to remember: 1st Kings 12:8  "But he forsook the counsel of the old men, which they had given him, and consulted with the young men that were grown up with him, and which stood before him"
