All About Hope and Grace
Saison 1 · Épisode 42
lundi 3 mars 2025 • Durée 01:22:41
In this episode of "Now, No Opportunity Wasted," I, Angelica Ross, return to the podcast after a long hiatus, bringing with me a wealth of experience and growth. I kick off the episode with an inspiring passage from Daisaku Ikeda's "Buddhism Day by Day," emphasizing the importance of personal responsibility and confronting challenges head-on. This theme resonates deeply with my own journey and the current state of the world.
In a new segment titled "Now Make It Make Sense," I welcome former Georgia State Representative Renita Shannon to help dissect the political noise surrounding current events, particularly focusing on the ongoing Trump saga. We dive into the promises made by Trump during his campaign, particularly regarding inflation, and discuss the reality of his administration's failures. Renita and I analyze the disconnect between Trump's rhetoric and the lived experiences of everyday Americans, especially in light of rising prices for essentials like eggs and gas.
We also tackle the implications of Trump's policies, including the controversial SAVE Act, which threatens to complicate voter registration processes and disproportionately affect marginalized communities, including trans individuals and married women. Renita highlights the dangers of erasing databases that track police misconduct, emphasizing the need for accountability in law enforcement.
As the conversation unfolds, we reflect on the broader implications of these political maneuvers and the importance of community resilience. I express my commitment to fighting for our rights and the necessity of being prepared for the challenges ahead.
In the latter part of the episode, I introduce my guest, Hope Giselle, a fellow activist and leader in the movement. We discuss the complexities of navigating public spaces as Black trans women, the challenges of being perceived through societal lenses, and the importance of mutual support and grace within our community. Hope shares her experiences of showing up authentically, even in spaces that may not always feel safe, and we explore the significance of accountability and growth in our interactions with one another.
Throughout this episode, I aim to foster a sense of hope and empowerment, encouraging listeners to confront the realities of our political landscape while also nurturing our community bonds. Join us as we navigate these critical conversations and strive for a more inclusive future.
From Cardiac Arrest to Comeback with Dr. Leo Moore
Saison 1 · Épisode 41
lundi 11 novembre 2024 • Durée 01:13:42
In this episode of "No Opportunity Wasted," I had the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Leo Moore, a remarkable physician whose journey is a testament to resilience, purpose, and the power of community support. We kicked off our conversation by checking in on Dr. Moore's well-being, and he shared how his busy day of patient care and administrative work had him looking forward to our discussion.
The core theme of our podcast revolves around how individuals navigate challenges and seize opportunities throughout their lives. I expressed my belief that everyone faces obstacles, regardless of their background or appearance, and it is our responses to these challenges that define us. Dr. Moore's story exemplifies this notion, particularly as a Black man in the medical field.
Dr. Moore reflected on the strong foundation he received from his family, particularly the influence of his mother, grandmother, and aunts, all of whom worked in healthcare. He shared that he is the first doctor in his family, and his family's unwavering support nurtured his dream of becoming a physician from a young age. This support was crucial, especially when he encountered the daunting realities of medical school, including the financial burdens and the rigorous academic demands.
A pivotal moment in Dr. Moore's journey occurred when he met a Black emergency medicine physician during high school. This encounter crystallized his dream of becoming a doctor, as he finally saw someone who looked like him thriving in the profession. He emphasized the importance of representation and mentorship in shaping his aspirations.
We also discussed the significance of programs like "Minority to Majority," which provided him with opportunities to learn and grow in a predominantly white environment. Dr. Moore expressed concern over the decline of such programs and the impact this has on future generations.
As we delved deeper into his experiences, Dr. Moore candidly shared the challenges he faced as a Black physician navigating predominantly white institutions. He highlighted the importance of confidence in his training at a historically Black medical school, which equipped him to serve diverse communities effectively.
Our conversation took a poignant turn when Dr. Moore recounted his recent experience with cardiac arrest during an elective procedure. He described the harrowing moments of being in cardiac arrest for over nine minutes and the subsequent journey of recovery. Dr. Moore's resilience and commitment to his health were evident as he shared how he quickly returned to his routine, emphasizing the importance of physical fitness and mental fortitude.
We also touched on the broader implications of health disparities, particularly within the Black community, and the need for open conversations about health, trust, and misinformation. Dr. Moore passionately advocated for addressing stigma surrounding HIV and the importance of education in combating misinformation.
Towards the end of our conversation, we explored Dr. Moore's personal life, including his journey of coming out as a Black gay man. He shared the challenges he faced in a religious household and the importance of self-acceptance and authenticity. His reflections on love, spirituality, and the qualities he seeks in a partner were both insightful and inspiring.
This episode is a powerful reminder of the strength found in community, the importance of representation, and the resilience required to overcome life's challenges. Dr. Leo Moore's story is not just about his journey in medicine; it is a celebration of hope, purpose, and the unwavering belief that we can all make a difference in our lives and the lives of others.
Black Joy Through The Lens with Andre Perry
Saison 1 · Épisode 32
lundi 26 août 2024 • Durée 01:03:14
I sit down with my friend and renowned photographer, Andre Perry and dive deep into the journey of his career, exploring the unique challenges and opportunities he has faced as a Black artist in the photography industry.
We kick off the conversation by discussing Andre's impressive portfolio, which includes collaborations with major brands such as Google, Facebook, Nike, and BET. Andre shares how his passion for photography was ignited by the film "Love Jones," where he was inspired by Nia Long's character, a photographer navigating the entrepreneurial landscape of New York City. This moment marked the beginning of his journey into capturing the joy and beauty of Black lives, a theme that has become central to his work.
As we delve into Andre's career, he reflects on the importance of representation in photography and how he aims to showcase Black people in a variety of positive and relatable scenarios, rather than the pain and suffering often depicted in mainstream media. He recounts the challenges he faced early on, including the pressure from his first agency to shoot more white subjects, and how he remained steadfast in his commitment to his vision.
Throughout our discussion, Andre opens up about the mental health struggles he has encountered as an entrepreneur, particularly during the darker months of winter. He candidly shares his experiences with depression and the importance of finding ways to stay motivated, even when the going gets tough. We talk about the significance of community and support, as well as the resilience he has developed over the years.
Andre also highlights the joy of being able to hire and work with his friends, who have been with him since the beginning of his journey. This sense of camaraderie and shared success is a testament to the power of collaboration and lifting each other up in the creative space.
As we wrap up the episode, we touch on the concept of seasons—both in nature and in life—and how they reflect the ups and downs of our journeys. Andre emphasizes the importance of acknowledging our resilience and the growth that comes from overcoming challenges.
Join us for this inspiring conversation that not only celebrates Andre's achievements but also serves as a reminder of the power of pursuing one's passion and the importance of representation in the arts.
