Karen Brown of Just Get It Done Quilts: Why There’s Room for Every Quilter- Ep. 221
26 Oct 2026
01:25:29
Quilting isn't just about making a beautiful quilt. It's about finding your people, learning something new, and giving yourself permission to enjoy the process, mistakes and all!
This week on Not Your Granny’s Quilt Show, I’m chatting with *Karen Brown of Just Get It Done Quilts, one of the most recognizable educators in the online quilting community. @JustGetitDoneQuilts But Karen didn't start out as a master quilter. She started as a sewist looking for a creative outlet during a challenging season of life, jumped into quilting with a king-size quilt, and learned a few things the hard way. Sound familiar?
Since launching her YouTube channel, Karen has helped quilters tackle beginner mistakes, improve their accuracy, manage their fabric stashes, and discover clever sewing hacks. In our conversation, we talk about how her channel grew, what she learned along the way, and why sharing what you know is so much more rewarding than competing with other creators.
We also get into the bigger picture of quilting: why there's room for every skill level and style, how modern tools make the craft more accessible, and why quilting is absolutely not a dying art. Plus, we talk about the emotional power of handmade quilts, the connections they create, and why a quilt is so much more than a blanket. It's a little bit of love, comfort, and safety you can wrap around someone.
In this episode, we talk about: - How Karen discovered quilting during a challenging time in her life - The early quilting mistakes that taught her valuable lessons - How Just Get It Done Quilts grew from a few videos into a go-to quilting resource - Sewing hacks, stash management, accurate piecing, and learning the basics - Why you don't have to be a master quilter to enjoy the craft - How quilting tools and technology open up new creative possibilities - The importance of sharing knowledge instead of competing with other creators - Why handmade quilts are meant to be used, loved, and lived with - The generous, welcoming community that makes quilting so special
Whether you're a brand-new quilter, a seasoned maker, or someone who just loves learning from other creative people, this conversation is a reminder that there's no single right way to be a quilter. Find Karen and her quilting tutorials at Just Get It Done Quilts* on YouTube, and join us for a conversation full of practical wisdom, laughs, and appreciation for everything this craft has to offer. If you enjoy the episode, please like, subscribe, leave a review, and share it with a quilting friend. It helps more people find the show and keeps these conversations going! Mindy Brown on Art Quilts, Hand-Dyed Fabric & Making Time for Creativity - Ep. 220
19 Oct 2026
01:38:04
On this episode of Not Your Granny’s Quilt Show, I’m chatting with contemporary fiber artist Mindy Brown about her large-scale art quilts, her creative process, and the questions that keep her work evolving. Mindy builds her practice around sustained inquiry, returning to ideas and visual elements to discover what else they might become. Her work combines improvisation, bold color, and thoughtful experimentation, including the smaller “snapshots” she creates from her larger pieces.
We also talk about hand-dyed fabric and color gradients, including how Mindy’s search for just the right colors led her to create Saturation Point, her own hand-dyed fabric business. Plus, we get into the realities of balancing art with a full-time job, making dedicated studio time, and finding fulfillment in the work itself.
And because no conversation about contemporary quilting would be complete without a little quilt-show talk, we share some thoughts on exhibiting, judging, and why getting into a show should never determine the value of your art.
Mindy brings plenty of honesty, strong opinions, and thoughtful perspective to this conversation. Whether you make traditional quilts, art quilts, or something that doesn’t fit neatly into either category, there’s inspiration here to help you keep experimenting and make time for the creative work that matters to you.
In this episode:
Mindy Brown’s journey into contemporary fiber art
Large-scale art quilts and sustained inquiry
Improvisation, experimentation, and knowing when a piece is finished
Hand-dyed fabrics, color theory, and Saturation Point
Balancing a full-time career with a dedicated art practice
Quilt shows, judging, and separating artistic worth from outside validation
Making time for creativity and following through on your ideas
Find Mindy Brown and her hand-dyed fabrics through Saturation Point, and explore more of her work online.

How to Find Your Creative Voice Through Art Quilting with Deborah Boschert - Ep. 219
12 Oct 2026
01:37:31
What if quilting could be more than patterns and precise piecing? What if fabric, paint, and stitch could help you discover your own artistic voice? 🎨🧵
This week on Not Your Granny’s Quilt Show, Amanda sits down with textile artist, author, and educator Deborah Boschert to talk about art quilt collage, creative exploration, and the updated 10th anniversary edition of her book, Art Quilt Collage: A Creative Journey in Fabric, Paint, and Stitch.
Deborah shares how she moved from traditional pieced quilts to the colorful, mixed-media art quilts she’s known for today. We talk about making art more approachable, finding inspiration in everyday images, experimenting with surface design, and using her eight design guides to move past the dreaded blank page.
We also get into the importance of finding your creative voice, why you don’t need an art degree to be an artist, and how recognizing your strengths can help you make work that feels uniquely yours. Plus, Deborah shares her perspective on entering quilt shows, judging and exhibiting artwork, teaching creative workshops, and learning to appreciate quilts beyond whether they match your personal taste.
And don't miss Deborah’s two practical tips for your own creative practice: give yourself permission to clear out what no longer serves you, and make visual decisions visually. Sometimes you just have to put the fabric on the design wall and see what happens!
Whether you're curious about art quilting, ready to experiment beyond traditional quilt patterns, or simply looking for a little creative inspiration, this conversation will encourage you to explore what's possible with the materials and skills you already have.

Sara Washington Goggin: Quilts, Community & Reproductive Justice - Ep, 218
05 Oct 2026
01:46:25
This week on Not Your Granny’s Quilt Show, I’m talking with quilter and textile artist Sara Washington Goggin, the 2026/2027 Create Change resident at The Laundromat Project in Brooklyn, New York.
Sara is a video producer by day, but during the COVID shutdowns, quilting became a creative outlet and a way to stay connected with the people she loved. She began sharing pieces of her life on Instagram, and eventually her quilts started making their way into the feed. Somewhere along the way, people started calling what she was making “art.”
But Sara doesn't approach her creative practice as a productivity metric. She creates for pleasure, for connection, and for activism.
Through her residency, Sara is building a community of quilters and non-quilters who are looking for something many of us crave: a sense of belonging and safety. Her work has also become a way to respond to her own experiences and advocate for others.
After experiencing a traumatic birth, Sara knew she needed to do something. That realization led to Quilts for Reproductive Justice, a project bringing people together through sewing groups to create quilts that will be raffled to raise money in support of reproductive justice.
In this conversation, Sara and I talk about finding creativity during isolation, the difference between creating for pleasure and creating for productivity, building community through making, and what can happen when our creative practices become a way to support the causes and people we care about.
Sara is also accepting donations of clean, good-quality quilting supplies and sewing machines to support her work.
I hope this conversation encourages you to think about what creativity means in your own life. Maybe it's art. Maybe it's activism. Maybe it's community. Maybe it's simply something that makes you happy.
Maybe it can be all of those things at once.
Please enjoy this conversation with Sara Washington Goggin.
In this episode: • Sara's journey from video producer to quilter and textile artist • Discovering quilting during the COVID shutdowns • Creating for pleasure instead of productivity • The role of Instagram in building creative connection • Sara's Create Change residency with The Laundromat Project • Building community through sewing and quilting • Creativity, belonging, and creating spaces for safety • Quilts for Reproductive Justice • Using quilting and community to support reproductive justice

Jenn Marks of Sewistry NC: From Handmade Business to Modern Quilt Artist - Ep. 217
28 Sep 2026
01:21:59
What if the thing that completely changed your creative direction started with a pile of leftover triangles? Jenn Marks of Sewistry NC shares how a handmade sewing business, a pandemic, an improv quilting workshop, and some pre-cut triangles eventually led her to modern quilting and textile art.
This week on Not Your Granny’s Quilt Show, I’m talking with modern quilter, pattern designer, and sewing artist Jenn Marks of Sewistry NC. Jenn has a PhD in Sociology , a background in handmade business, and a creative journey that eventually led her to the world of modern quilting and textile art. Jenn grew up watching her mother sew clothes, curtains, and dolls, but quilts weren't really part of her family's sewing story. After leaving home following high school, Jenn's mom gifted her her first personal sewing machine and Jenn kept sewing in small ways while working her way through school and raising a toddler. She ultimately earned her PhD while 8.5 months pregnant, then spent time in the workforce before making the decision to stay home with her children. That change opened up more space for creativity. Jenn became a yoga instructor, started sewing more, and in 2013 launched a handmade business creating bags, pouches, and other sewn goods. She spent years in heavy rotation on the handmade market circuit, and by 2019, she had her most profitable year yet. Then COVID changed everything. During that time, Jenn took a whole cloth quilting workshop, learned improv quilting through Sherri Lynn Wood, and began exploring quilting in a much deeper way. After making masks during the pandemic, she found herself with a pile of pre-cut triangles. Those triangles eventually became her first quilt, and from there, Jenn dove headfirst into learning everything she could about quilts, quilting, and the broader world of textile art. Since then, Jenn has continued to develop her voice as an artist. She's an alum of the Alderwood Studio Pattern Writing Academy, has exhibited her work in multiple places, and has built a strong community of fellow quilt artists who continue to challenge, encourage, and inspire her. I love Jenn's story because it is such a great reminder that creative paths aren't always linear. Sometimes the thing you think is a side project becomes the thing that changes everything. Come hear how Jenn went from sewing handmade goods to discovering modern quilting, developing her artistic practice, and finding a creative community that keeps her moving forward. Please enjoy this conversation with Jenn Marks of Sewistry NC! In this episode: • Jenn's journey from sociology PhD to textile artist • Growing up around sewing without quilts • Building a successful handmade sewing business • How COVID changed the direction of her creative practice • Discovering whole cloth and improv quilting • The unexpected origin of Jenn's first quilt • Learning to design quilt patterns • Building community with other quilt artists • Finding your creative voice and allowing your path to evolve Explore Jenn's work and Sewistry NC at her website: https://www.sewistrync.com/

Ben Venom: Where Punk Rock, Quilting & Fine Art Collide - Ep. 216
21 Sep 2026
01:19:56
This week on Not Your Granny’s Quilt Show, I’m talking with San Francisco-based textile artist Ben Venom, whose work brings together the worlds of counterculture, music, repurposed materials, and traditional textile techniques in a way that is completely his own.
Ben grew up in the Atlanta punk rock scene of the 1990s, and while earning his MFA at the San Francisco Art Institute, he began making flags. In 2006, he saw the landmark Gee’s Bend quilt exhibition at the de Young Museum in San Francisco, an experience that changed the way he thought about textiles and opened the door to incorporating quilting into his artistic practice.
In 2008, Ben created his first quilted piece for a group exhibition in Berlin, using old punk T-shirts collected from years of seeing punk and heavy metal bands. That piece became the beginning of an ongoing exploration of what happens when materials, imagery, and histories from very different worlds are brought together.
I first discovered Ben’s work through an issue of QuiltFolk magazine, and I was immediately drawn to the juxtaposition of punk and metal imagery with silks, soft cottons, and traditional quilting techniques. There is something unexpected about seeing these materials together, and that tension is a huge part of what makes Ben’s work so compelling.
We talk about his path from the punk scene to textile art, the influence of Gee’s Bend, working with repurposed materials, and how the stories and histories held by those materials become part of the artwork itself.
Ben also shared a quote from Patti Smith that has become an important philosophy for how he approaches his life and work: build a good name, protect your work, don't compromise your values, and focus on doing good work.
That idea really stuck with me.
Ben’s work is available through his website, and he is currently teaching as an Artist in Residence at The Space Program in San Francisco. He is also creating a new body of work for a solo exhibition coming in February 2027, so definitely stay tuned for that.
In the meantime, go check out Ben’s work and prepare to see textiles, quilting, and repurposed materials from a very different perspective. https://www.benvenom.com/
Please enjoy this conversation with Ben Venom!
In this episode: • Ben’s Atlanta punk rock roots • Discovering the Gee’s Bend quilts and the impact they had on his work • His first quilted piece in 2008 • Turning punk and heavy metal T-shirts into art • The stories and histories carried by repurposed materials • The relationship between quilting, fine art, music, and counterculture • Why doing good work and building a good name matter • Ben’s upcoming solo exhibition in February 2027

The Grimoire Dark Magic Sampler: Eva Saunders on Collaboration & Creativity - Ep. 215
14 Sep 2026
01:58:15
What happens when a quilter has an idea, realizes she has talented friends, and lets everyone work their magic?
Eva Saunders of Gingerly Quilt Co. joins me to reveal the story behind The Grimoire Dark Magic Sampler, a fantasy-inspired collaborative quilt where every designer gets to shine.
My friend and returning guest Eva Saunders of Gingerly Quilt Co. is back on Not Your Granny’s Quilt Show to share the story behind her latest quilt pattern, a collaborative sampler inspired by fantasy, dark academia, and a little bit of magic.
The idea for The Grimoire came to Eva while she was recovering from her “QuiltCon Cold” and spending a lot of time immersed in the art deco-inspired world of her recent quilt patterns. She had designed a beautiful frame, but something was missing. She didn't know exactly what belonged in the middle.
Then Eva remembered something very important: she has friends.
And those friends happen to be incredibly talented quilt designers.
What began with Eva’s frame grew into a collaborative sampler featuring a collection of beautifully designed blocks, each with its own personality, that come together to create one cohesive, moody, magical quilt. In our conversation, we talk about the creative challenge of collaboration and the fine balance between creating a cohesive whole while still allowing each individual artist’s work to shine.
And yes, Eva gave me a sneak peek at the final layout MONTHS ago, so I am extremely relieved that I can finally talk about this quilt. Keeping that secret has been torture!
Get ready for the *Grimoire Dark Magic Sampler Sew-Along, October 1–31, 2026!
Patterns are available at the link below, and kits will be available through several retailers. When you purchase the pattern, you’ll also get the opportunity to unlock a bonus block by solving a riddle. Because obviously, a magical sampler needs a little mystery.
And there’s more! When you finish your own Grimoire Sampler, I’ll be offering a special discount for sending your quilt to Sweet Pea Design Company for edge-to-edge quilting. Stay tuned for all the details!
Whether you love quilting, fantasy, dark academia, Art Deco design, or just the magic that happens when creative people work together, I hope you enjoy this conversation with Eva. Please enjoy Eva Saunders of Gingerly Quilt Co.! The Grimoire Dark Magic Sampler*

Quilt Historian Tara Miller on the Stories Hidden in Quilts - Ep. 214
07 Sep 2026
02:07:07
What if the quilts we make today become the history someone studies 100 years from now?
Quilt historian Tara Miller joins me to talk about the stories, people, women’s history, and cultural context hidden inside the quilts we’ve inherited. From her work curating The American Quilt: Cloth and Commerce to her journey from technical writing to studying quilt history, this conversation might make you look at quilts a little differently.
Before dedicating herself to quilt history, Tara spent 22 years in the corporate world as a technical writer in the software industry. Along the way, she discovered a deeper passion for understanding quilts not just as objects, but as a way to explore women’s history, culture, creativity, commerce, and everyday life.
Tara first began developing her appreciation for the historical side of quilting through books. In 2018, she joined the American Quilt Study Group, diving even deeper into the study and preservation of quilt history. She also credits a long list of incredible mentors who helped her develop a deep appreciation for textiles and their significance in our past, present, and future.
We talk about what drew Tara to quilt history, what we can learn by looking closely at the textiles that came before us, the importance of preserving these stories, and why understanding the past can change the way we look at the quilts being made today.
Whether you're a quilter, textile lover, history nerd, or simply curious about the stories hidden in the things people make, I hope this conversation inspires you to take a closer look at the quilts around you. Because every quilt has a story. And sometimes, the history is just as fascinating as the quilt itself.
*In this episode: • Tara’s journey from technical writer to quilt historian • Curating The American Quilt: Cloth and Commerce* at the Bowers Museum • How books opened the door to quilt history • The American Quilt Study Group and the study of quilt history • The importance of mentors and preserving textile knowledge • Quilts, women’s history, and the stories held in textiles • Why understanding quilt history can deepen our creative practice today

Meagan Guite on Sewing, Community, Creativity & Finding Your Way Forward - Ep. 213
24 Aug 2026
01:39:45
This week on Not Your Granny's Quilt Show, I'm welcoming back a returning friend, Meagan Guite!
Meagan is the Project Coordinator at Ruby Star Society, where she gets a behind-the-scenes look at how fabric collections come to life. From the early conversations and collaborations to the conception of new fabric lines and the final launch, Meagan gets to be part of the process that brings some of our favorite fabrics into the world.
She also plays a hands-on role in deciding how new collections are presented and showcased when they launch, giving her a unique perspective on the business, creativity, and relationships behind the fabric we love.
But Meagan's story has changed since we last talked.
After being diagnosed with breast cancer, Meagan stepped back from sharing parts of her creative process. In some ways, sharing more would have meant acknowledging something she wasn't quite ready to accept: that she had cancer.
Thankfully, early detection meant that her treatment was successful. Now, Meagan is on the road to healing and looking toward the future with a renewed passion for sewing, quilting, and the community that surrounds them.
Being changed by the experience has given Meagan a new perspective on what she wants from her creative life. She's brimming with ideas and excitement about building meaningful relationships within the quilting industry, starting with local quilt shops and the people who make those communities so special.
This year, Meagan is holding onto one word: peace.
We talk about what it means to find peace in creativity, to reconnect with sewing after a difficult season, and to embrace the humanness of making things with our hands.
In this episode, we talk about:
The behind-the-scenes process of creating fabric collections
Meagan's role at Ruby Star Society
The collaboration and relationships behind fabric design
Returning to sewing with a renewed sense of excitement
Finding your way back to creativity after a difficult season
Building meaningful relationships within the quilting community
Supporting local quilt shops
The importance of giving yourself space to heal and change
Finding peace through sewing and quilting
I'm so happy to welcome Meagan back to the show and to hear her talk about where she's been, where she's going, and what she's excited about next.
Please enjoy the return of my friend, Meagan Guite!

Architect Turned Quilt Artist | Luke Haynes on Quilting, Public Art & Coach Bags - Ep. 211
27 Jul 2026
01:26:15
This week on Not Your Granny's Quilt Show, I'm joined by Luke Haynes, also known as Entropies, an architect turned quilt artist whose bold, large-scale work has redefined what quilts can be.
Long before quilting became his career, Luke was a maker. He learned to knit and crochet at a young age, attended an arts high school, and was always drawn to creating with his hands. While still a student, he chose fabric as the medium for an artistic portrait project, discovering a love for reclaimed textiles and the endless possibilities hidden within them.
After earning a degree in architecture, Luke entered the profession but soon realized he wasn't in a place where he could fully express his creativity or make the impact he envisioned. Nearly 20 years ago, he made the leap to become a full-time quilt artist, combining his architectural perspective with quilting to create striking works that blur the line between fine art and traditional craft.
Today, Luke is known for his large-scale portrait quilts, public art installations, and innovative use of reclaimed and vintage fabrics. His work invites viewers to reconsider what quilting can be and where quilts belong.
In this episode, we talk about:
Transitioning from architecture to full-time quilt art
Creating large-scale portrait quilts
Working with reclaimed and vintage textiles
Public art installations and community spaces
The intersection of architecture and quilting
Building a career as a professional textile artist
We also discuss Luke's exciting collaboration with Coach. Using vintage and thrifted quilts and textiles, Luke created entirely new quilted fabrics that became a collection of Coach handbags, introducing quilting craftsmanship to an entirely new audience.
If you're attending the Festival of Quilts, be sure to visit Luke's exhibition, Portraits in Fabric, in the Textile Galleries.
Whether you're interested in modern quilting, textile art, architecture, sustainability, or creative careers, this conversation is packed with inspiration.

Teresa Duryea Wong on Japanese Quilts, Quilt History & Free Motion Quilting - Ep. 210
13 Jul 2026
01:21:17
A trip to Japan completely changed the way Teresa Duryea Wong understood quilting. That journey became the foundation for years of research, writing, and preserving quilt history.
This week on Not Your Granny's Quilt Show, I'm joined by Teresa Duryea Wong of Third Floor Quilts, an award-winning quilt historian, author, and educator whose passion for quilting has led her around the world.
Teresa is the author of seven books on quilting, textile history, and design, with an eighth book, Old Quilts Made New: Finishing Antique Designs with Free Motion Quilting, releasing in September 2026.
Before becoming one of quilting's most respected writers, Teresa spent many years in the corporate world as a professional writer, traveling extensively for work. When it came time to choose the next chapter of her life, she followed two lifelong passions: quilting and writing.
Teresa learned to sew as a child because making clothing was simply the practical thing to do. Quilting, however, came later. It was a close friend who introduced her to quilting as an adult, and she quickly fell in love with the craft.
Living in the Houston area meant annual trips to the International Quilt Festival, where one style of quilting captured her imagination above all others: Japanese quilts. Their balance, precision, thoughtful composition, and beautiful fabrics inspired Teresa to learn more.
In 2014, she traveled to Japan to study the country's rich quilting traditions firsthand. That journey deepened her appreciation for how quilting was embraced, adapted, and transformed within Japanese culture, eventually inspiring several of her books and years of research.
In this episode, we talk about:
Teresa's journey from corporate writer to quilt author
The history and artistry of Japanese quilting
Researching quilting traditions around the world
Writing books about quilting and textile history
Free motion quilting antique quilt designs
Why understanding quilt history enriches modern quilting
Her upcoming book, "Old Quilts Made New"
Whether you love quilt history, free motion quilting, antique quilts, or Japanese textiles, Teresa's passion for preserving and sharing quilting knowledge shines through every story she tells.

Meet Brent McGee! Sculptural Quilter | Fiber Artist | 3D Quilt Art - Ep. 209
29 Jun 2026
02:14:03
This week on Not Your Granny's Quilt Show, I'm joined by Brent McGee, a textile artist whose creative journey has taken him from the stage to the sewing studio.
Before quilting became his calling, Brent lived a life immersed in the performing arts. A professionally trained musician, he performed in musical theater and spent several years entertaining audiences in a New York City piano bar. Creativity was always part of his life, thanks to a family that encouraged artistic expression.
Everything changed during the 2020 lockdowns.
Taking an unexpected break from live performance, Brent's sister commissioned him to create a textile art piece for her new home. The satisfaction of completing that project awakened something new. What began as a single commission quickly became an artistic obsession fueled by curiosity, experimentation, and a desire to explore the possibilities of fiber.
Brent's early work explored hand-dyed fabrics and intricate hand quilting, culminating in his award-winning piece Intertidal Invertebrates. But instead of settling into a style, he challenged himself once again.
Today, Brent primarily works with unbleached muslin and wool batting, creating sculptural textile art that embraces the natural qualities of the materials. Rather than forcing the fabric into a preconceived design, Brent listens to what the fabric wants to become. Through that process, he has found a deeper connection between creativity, intuition, and spirituality.
In this episode, we talk about:
Transitioning from professional musician to textile artist
Finding a new creative path during the 2020 lockdowns
Hand quilting and sculptural textile art
Working with unbleached muslin and wool batting
Letting materials guide the creative process
Curiosity, experimentation, and artistic growth
Creativity as a spiritual practice
We also discuss Brent's piece Apollo and Python, which has been accepted into Quilt Visions at the Visions Museum of Textile Art. The exhibition runs from October 24, 2026 through January 16, 2027.
If you love contemporary quilting, textile art, hand quilting, or conversations about creativity and artistic growth, this episode is for you.

Carolina Oneto on Color Theory, Quilt Art, and Finding Your Creative Voice - Ep. 208
22 Jun 2026
01:05:04
This week on Not Your Granny's Quilt Show, I'm joined by Carolina Oneto, an internationally recognized quilt artist, teacher, and soon-to-be author whose work beautifully blends color, design, and artistic expression.
Born in Chile, Carolina's path to quilting was anything but traditional. Like many quilters, she began her professional life in engineering, working in the field for several years and teaching at her alma mater before ultimately pursuing quilting full time.
As Carolina developed her quilting skills, she sought out opportunities to learn from respected artists throughout South America, including mentors in Argentina and Brazil. A pivotal moment came when she studied color interaction and color theory with Lucia Stacchetti. That experience transformed the way Carolina viewed her work and helped her shift from seeing quilting as a craft to embracing it as an art form.
Today, Carolina creates award-winning quilts, teaches online and in-person classes around the world, and exhibits her work internationally. Her quilts are known for their striking use of color, movement, and thoughtful design, inspiring quilters to think differently about their own creative process.
In this episode, we talk about:
Transitioning from engineering to professional quilting
The role of color theory in quilt design
Studying with influential quilt artists in South America
Viewing quilts as art
Teaching quilting around the world
Finding and developing your artistic voice
Carolina's upcoming book project
We also discuss the evolution of Carolina's work and how continuing education, experimentation, and curiosity have shaped her creative journey.
If you're interested in color, quilt design, textile art, or hearing how artists develop their unique perspective, this episode is one you won't want to miss.

What Your Longarm Quilter Wishes Every Quilter Knew | Longarm Quilting Tips - Ep. 207
15 Jun 2026
00:40:06
This week on Not Your Granny’s Quilt Show, the guest is... me!
When I'm not behind the microphone, I'm running my longarm quilting business, Sweet Pea Design Company, helping quilters finish their projects and bring their quilt tops to life.
In this episode, I'm sharing my updated guide to preparing a quilt for longarm quilting. While I've covered some of these topics before, it felt like the perfect time to revisit the process, answer common questions, and explain the reasoning behind many of the requests longarm quilters make.
Whether you're sending your very first quilt to a longarmer or you're a seasoned quilter looking for a refresher, this episode covers practical tips to help your quilting experience go smoothly.
We'll talk about:
How to prepare your quilt top for longarm quilting
Backing fabric requirements and common mistakes
Choosing the right batting for your project
Different batting options and how they affect the finished quilt
How to select a pantograph design
Why longarm quilters have specific preparation requirements
Building a successful relationship with your longarm quilter
Every longarm quilter has their own preferences and process, but these tips are based on years of experience and my commitment to delivering the best possible results for every quilt that comes through my studio.
Most importantly, I hope this episode helps demystify the longarm quilting process and encourages quilters to communicate openly with their longarmer. The relationship you build with the person finishing your quilt can make all the difference.
Have questions after listening? Reach out! I'm always happy to help fellow quilters better understand the longarm quilting process.
Thank you for listening, watching, and supporting Not Your Granny's Quilt Show. I appreciate every one of you.

Steph Skardal on QuiltCon 2027, Modern Quilting, and the Quilty Solid App - Ep. 206
01 Jun 2026
01:36:40
This week on Not Your Granny’s Quilt Show, I’m joined by Steph Skardal, quilter, fiber artist, software engineer, and the featured artist for QuiltCon 2027. Steph’s work has been exhibited in quilt shows and featured in books and magazines, earning recognition for her innovative approach to quilting and textile art.
Whether she is designing quilts, experimenting with color, or exploring new artistic concepts, Steph is always pushing the boundaries of what quilting can be. By day, Steph works as a software engineer, and that analytical mindset led her to create Quilty Solid, a free app designed to help quilters make more confident fabric and color choices. The tool allows users to explore and compare solid fabric collections from multiple manufacturers, making it easier to visualize color combinations before cutting into fabric.
In this episode, we talk about:
Preparing for her featured artist exhibit at QuiltCon 2027
The intersection of technology and quilting
Using color intentionally in quilt design
Developing the Quilty Solid app
Creativity, experimentation, and artistic growth
Pushing boundaries in modern quilting
Steph also shares insights into her recent work and the creative process behind building a cohesive body of quilts for a major exhibition. We discuss how her perspective as both an engineer and artist influences her design decisions and why she is passionate about creating tools that help quilters spend less time second-guessing fabric choices and more time making.
We also chat about her recently announced color palette for the Windham Fabric Challenge and what excites her about the future of quilting and textile art. If you love modern quilting, color theory, quilt design, technology, or seeing artists challenge expectations, this episode is for you. Meet Marion Keller! of Carrefour: European Quilt Show - Ep. 205
25 May 2026
01:30:25
This week on Not Your Granny’s Quilt Show, I’m joined by Marion Keller, the Lead Artistic Program Designer for Carrefour European Patchwork Meeting, one of the most unique and internationally celebrated quilt events in the world.
Marion never expected to work in the quilting industry or spend her days surrounded by quilts and textile art, but after six years with Carrefour, she considers herself an honorary member of the quilting community.
In this episode, Marion shares the story behind the show and explains why the breathtaking valley of Alsace creates the perfect setting for this immersive four-day quilting and textile arts experience.
We also dive into the fascinating history of the event. The original 1995 symposium in Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines commemorated the 300th anniversary of the Amish movement. Because Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines is considered the birthplace of the Amish faith, the gathering brought together historians, descendants of Anabaptist communities, textile enthusiasts, and artists from around the world. That symposium eventually evolved into the internationally recognized Carrefour quilt show.
What makes Carrefour so distinctive is its curatorial approach. Rather than displaying individual quilts from many makers in one shared exhibit, invited textile artists present cohesive bodies of work that transform each venue into a complete artistic experience.
The exhibitions are spread throughout four villages in the valley, creating an unforgettable mix of quilting, textile art, history, architecture, and culture.
In this episode, we talk about:
The history of Carrefour European Patchwork Meeting
Quilt exhibitions in Alsace, France
Textile art and curatorial design
The connection between Amish history and quilting
International quilting communities
Creating immersive artistic experiences through quilts

This week on Not Your Granny’s Quilt Show, I’m joined by Kenneth D. King, couture designer, author, educator, and lifelong maker whose work spans custom fashion, doll couture, and museum exhibitions.
Kenneth is the author of Doll Couture and Doll Couture: Red Carpet, two books that showcase his extraordinary talent for designing and constructing high-fashion garments for dolls. He also teaches at the Fashion Institute of Technology and has created custom couture pieces worn by Elton John.
Yes, that iconic hat from the 1987 Diet Coke commercial launch? Kenneth designed it.
Kenneth’s love of dolls and fashion began in childhood. Growing up in rural Oklahoma, he quietly used fabric scraps from his mother’s sewing to create clothing for dolls he inherited from his sister. What began as a private creative outlet eventually became an internationally recognized career.
In 1980, Kenneth moved to San Francisco, where he built his design business before relocating to New York City in 2005.
In this episode, we talk about:
Kenneth’s journey from rural Oklahoma to the world of couture fashion
Designing custom pieces for Elton John
Teaching couture sewing techniques at FIT
Writing the Doll Couture books
The artistry and technical skill behind doll fashion
Creativity, identity, and following your artistic vision
We also talk about Kenneth’s glamorous “assistant,” Lola, along with Crazy Bella, two dolls who have become stars in their own right. Lola will be featured in the Dressing Dolls exhibit at the Museum at FIT from September 2026 through January 2027.
If you love sewing, couture, doll fashion, and stories about creative lives, this episode is not to be missed.

Meet Tawnee Kinnebrew! Owner of Wyldwood Creative! - Ep. 203
11 May 2026
01:48:36
This week on Not Your Granny’s Quilt Show, I’m joined by Tawnee Kinnebrew, owner of Wyldwood Creative, a modern quilt shop and sewing community built on creativity, connection, and the belief that making should feel welcoming and inspiring.
Tawnee has always been creative and credits the women who raised her with instilling a simple but powerful mindset: “How hard can it be?”
That attitude shaped her path. After considering fashion design school, Tawnee decided to trust her instincts and made her first quilt, a story she shares in this episode that will sound familiar to many quilters.
Before opening her shop, Tawnee worked in a demanding sales career that kept her away from friends and family during important moments. Realizing she wanted a different life, she left her job, ran the numbers, and turned her dream of opening a quilt shop into reality.
Wyldwood Creative opened in October 2019 with a vision to create a quilt and sewing store rooted in community and core values. Just months later, the challenges of 2020 forced a rapid pivot to online sales and social media. Tawnee adapted quickly, built meaningful relationships with customers, and continued growing the business.
As the shop expanded, Tawnee assembled a team of like-minded creatives who help make Wyldwood Creative the warm and welcoming space it is today.
Today, Wyldwood Creative offers quilting fabric, sewing notions, patterns, classes, and workshops designed to support makers at every stage.
If you love quilt shops, quilting business stories, and conversations about creativity and community, this episode is for you.

04 May 2026
01:18:15
This week on Not Your Granny’s Quilt Show, I’m joined by Sarah Ruiz, a former NASA scientist turned quilt pattern designer, tech editor, and quilting educator.
Yes, we are talking actual rocket science.
Sarah grew up creative and made her first quilt in the early 2000s using t shirts from running events. After some time away from sewing, she found her way back through a beginner sewing class making pillowcases at Joann Fabrics. From there, her quilting journey took off.
Today, Sarah is known for her quilt patterns, technical expertise, and teaching through lectures and workshops that help quilters build skills and confidence.
In this episode, we talk about:
Transitioning from a career in science to the quilting industry
Writing quilt patterns and working as a tech editor
Learning quilting as a beginner and returning to the craft
Quilt design inspiration and process
The intersection of quilting and STEM
We also dive into Sarah’s Quarter Moon Quilt, which was being featured across multiple new fabric lines during the Artemis II mission around the moon. Sarah shares her connection to the mission, and we fully nerd out about space, quilting, and the significance of this moment in history.

Meet Emile Ennis Jr.! - Ep. 201
27 Apr 2026
01:33:41
This week on Not Your Granny’s Quilt Show, I’m joined by Emile Ennis Jr., a TV host, content creator, and crocheter who is bringing joy, visibility, and personality into the fiber arts space. Emile first learned to crochet from his grandmother, but after her passing, he stepped away from it for a time.
In 2020, he picked up his crochet hook again as a way to reconnect with his grief, his creativity, and the memory of his grandma. What started as something deeply personal has grown into something much bigger.
In the summer of 2025, Emile casually included crochet in a social media post, and the response was immediate. People were drawn not just to the craft, but to the energy, confidence, and presence he brings to it.
Now, he shares crochet content regularly, blending fiber arts with humor, psychology, and his signature clack fan.
In this episode, we talk about:
Learning to crochet and reconnecting with creativity through grief
Representation and visibility in crochet and fiber arts
Building a social media presence as a creative
The unexpected power of sharing your craft online
Finding joy, confidence, and community through making
And yes, we talk about the clack fans.
Emile has designed a line of bold, fun fans that are as expressive as his content, perfect for making a statement or just staying cool. If you are looking for inspiration, creativity, and a reminder that there is space for you in the fiber arts world exactly as you are, this episode is for you.

Meet Gregory Pagán-Hill aka Uncle Greg! - Ep. 197
09 Apr 2026
01:26:08
A quilter, garment upcycler, and community builder, Gregory Pagán-Hill, also known as Uncle Greg, is using sewing as a way to process grief, build connection, and create something meaningful from what already exists.
This week on Not Your Granny’s Quilt Show, I’m joined by Uncle Greg, whose journey with sewing began at a young age when his mother enlisted him and his siblings to help teach classes after school. What once felt like a chore eventually became a lifelong skill that would return to him in a deeply meaningful way.
After the loss of his brother, Gregory found his way back to quilting. The comfort of his mother’s quilts, the love of family, and a desire to live authentically led him back to the craft. Through that process, he discovered a passion for working with garments, transforming existing pieces into something new. He calls this process “editing,” and it has become a signature part of his creative voice.
Gregory also saw a need for community. In response, he created Club Corduroy, a monthly meetup in the Chicago area that offers a welcoming space for queer and allied sewists to gather, create, and connect.
Out of grief also came another meaningful project. Gregory hosts the podcast Stay Kind with Uncle Greg, where he revisits episodes of Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood and reflects on the lessons of love, kindness, and humanity that still resonate today.
This conversation is heartfelt, honest, and full of connection. Greg and I clicked immediately, and I hope you feel that same warmth as you listen.

Meet Jen Duffin of Nova Mercury Design! - Ep. 196
23 Mar 2026
01:26:29
A fiber artist, author, and creative entrepreneur, Jen Duffin turned a personal need for connection into a thriving art practice full of color, texture, and joy. This week on Not Your Granny’s Quilt Show, I’m joined by Jen of Nova Mercury Design, a Montreal-based artist whose work in frame loom weaving is as eye-catching as it is inspiring.
Jen began her creative journey in 2016 as a way to reconnect with herself while raising two young children. Starting with macramé plant hangers, she quickly found a community of people who loved her work, and Nova Mercury Design was born. As demand grew, Jen expanded her practice, experimenting with different fibers and techniques before fully embracing frame loom weaving as her primary medium.
Today, Jen creates bold, textured fiber art pieces that are full of movement and color. Her work invites you to pause, take it in, and appreciate the beauty of handmade art. Jen is also the author of The Joy of Weaving: Modern Frame Loom Projects for Beginners, a step-by-step guide designed to help beginners confidently start weaving. She also offers an online course through her website, making her approachable teaching style accessible to creatives everywhere. If you’re curious about weaving, looking to try something new, or simply want to be inspired by beautiful fiber art, this episode is for you.

Meet Angie, The Savage Stitcher! - Ep. 195
16 Mar 2026
01:20:47
A nurse, public health advocate, and embroidery designer, Angie is using stitching to build community, spark laughter, and help people express themselves.
This week on Not Your Granny’s Quilt Show, I’m chatting with Angie of The Savage Stitcher, the creator of beginner-friendly embroidery kits that focus on bold lettering, romance-novel tropes, sweary phrases, and the funny thoughts we all have but do not always say out loud.
Angie is a nurse who works in public health, and helping people is at the heart of everything she does. What started as teaching embroidery classes quickly grew into strong demand for her designs, which led to the creation of her embroidery kits and patterns. Her kits make it easy for beginners to jump in, stitch their feelings, and have a little fun along the way.
Community is also a huge part of Angie’s work. In Dayton, she helps host regular crafting events that bring people together. On the last Sunday of every month she hosts an open craft meetup, and quarterly she helps organize Crafty Cinema, where a locally owned theater screens a movie for crafters while also raising money for local organizations.
Angie also recently made her very first quilt in 2025 and is excited to keep growing her quilting skills.
If you are in the mood to stitch out your feelings while supporting a loud and proud feminist and a hot dog enthusiast, Angie’s kits can be found on Little Blue Market and on Instagram at Instagram @the_savagestitcher.
Please enjoy my conversation with Angie of The Savage Stitcher.

Meet Terrance Williams of Terrance Williams Designs! Designer | Fashion | Sustainability - Ep. 194
09 Mar 2026
01:31:29
This week on Not Your Granny’s Quilt Show, I’m joined by the incredible sewist and fabric designer Terrance Williams of Terrance Williams Designs. Terrance taught himself to sew as a kid after falling in love with fashion magazines and the drama of couture design. What started as fascination quickly turned into a creative practice that blends bold garments, thoughtful design, and a deep commitment to community. Before building his fashion brand, Terrance pursued an intense academic path. He studied Political Science in Global Studies with plans for law school, while also completing triple minors in African Studies, Asian Studies, and Women’s Studies. During college he also stayed close to his creative side through his campus Fashion Club.
Eventually Terrance realized his heart was not in law. It was in fashion.
Today Terrance is known for his flowing, dramatic garments including embroidered tulle duster cardigans, elegant caftans, dresses, and his ever popular knotted headbands. His business is also guided by strong values. Terrance only works with companies that maintain ethical environmental and human rights policies, and he donates 5 percent of his profits to environmental causes. So far his business has contributed more than $13,000 to environmental organizations. Terrance’s story is one of resilience, creativity, and building community through authenticity. His passion for fashion and human rights shines through everything he creates.
Take a look at Terrance’s beautiful work while you listen and enjoy this conversation.

QuiltCon 2026 Recap! - Ep. 193
02 Mar 2026
00:47:06
This week on Not Your Granny’s Quilt Show, I’m sharing my full recap of QuiltCon 2026 and wow, what a year it was! I’ve loved attending QuiltCon in the past, but this one felt extra special. Two quilts that I quilted were hanging in the show, and seeing my work displayed for thousands of people was completely surreal. Getting to share that moment with my husband and family made the experience even more meaningful. From powerful resistance art to the endless creativity of quilters around the world, QuiltCon reminded me that there is always room to grow, learn, and be inspired. The quilts were incredible, the fashion show brought the fun, the lectures delivered, and the best part as always was reconnecting with friends and meeting new ones along the way. I go into QuiltCon ready to learn and be entertained, and once again it did not disappoint. I’d love to hear from you. What do you do to get the most out of QuiltCon? Leave a comment or send me an email. notyourgrannysquiltshow@gmail.com Your response might be featured in an upcoming video!
Thanks for being here and enjoy the episode!

Meet Matt Harr of Harr Craft Goods! - Ep. 192
23 Feb 2026
01:29:33
This week on Not Your Granny’s Quilt Show, I’m joined by Matt Harr of Harr Craft Goods. Matt is a fourth generation quilter with a lifelong love of fabric and sewing. While building a career in dance and performing arts, his sewing skills stayed close at hand through costuming and creative problem solving. When the 2020 pandemic brought the performing arts world to a halt, Matt took a hard look at what was next and chose to pivot fully into sewing and quilting.
During that time, Matt turned to TikTok, where his sewing tutorials quickly grew into a community. At a moment when so many of us were isolated, Matt helped create an online space where quilters could learn, connect, and feel less alone. That sense of shared experience continues to shape his work today.
Now, Matt designs patterns, works at a local quilt shop, teaches workshops, and speaks at retreats and guilds. He also has a deep love for the fashion side of the quilt world, which led him to collaborate with the Modern Quilt Guild to create the very first fashion show at QuiltCon 2026. Matt hopes to keep curating and emceeing a space where quilted garments get the celebration they deserve, honoring the hours of love and labor that go into every piece.
This conversation is fun, thoughtful, and a perfect way to ease back into everyday life after QuiltCon. Please enjoy my chat with Matt Harr, and be sure to check out his work at harrcraftgoods.com and on Instagram at Instagram @harrcraftgoods.

This week on Not Your Granny’s Quilt Show, my guest is Ian Danger Capstick, host of the Art Against Empire podcast, quilter, and former political pundit.
Like many of us in the fiber arts world, Ian’s introduction to making began in his grandmother’s craft cupboard. He learned cross stitch and rug hooking, and put it all away as an adult while he worked in Canadian politics. He famously brought his cross stitching with him to work in the meantime of appearing as a political pundit on Canadian television. It was not until the 2020 lockdowns that Ian fully dove into quilting.
As his quilting skills grew alongside major shifts in his professional life, Ian created a quilted banner as part of his capstone project for the horticulture degree he completed during lockdown. That project opened the door to a deeper exploration of banners, textiles, and the long history of fabric as both a cultural and political tool. Quilted banners became a focal point as Ian studied the origins of textile traditions and the ways fabric has been politicized, controlled, and reclaimed.
Through Art Against Empire, Ian examines how textile art has been used across time as a form of power, resistance, and reform. He speaks with artists from around the world, guiding listeners through the global landscape of fiber and textiles. When people reclaim mastery of textiles, Ian believes, it becomes an act of resistance and a path toward freedom.
Ian is also doing powerful work at The NOOK alongside Zak Foster and others, creating spaces that invite thoughtful conversations, including the uncomfortable ones.
To learn more about Ian, follow him on Instagram at quiltqueerly, visit iancapstick.net, and be sure to listen to the available episodes of Art Against Empire. Please enjoy this episode.

Meet Cole Whitaker of Cole's Quilts! - Ep. 190
09 Feb 2026
01:36:59
This week on Not Your Granny’s Quilt Show, my guest is Cole Whitaker of Cole’s Quilts. Cole is an educator at Bellevue College in Washington, a quilt designer, and a custom longarmer whose work is as thoughtful as it is stunning.
Cole learned to sew at the age of five from his grandmother, planting a creative seed that stayed with him throughout his life. After high school, he channeled that creativity into the world of cosmetology, spending twenty years teaching and mentoring students. Over time, physical limitations led Cole to step away and seek answers, eventually receiving diagnoses of Ehlers Danlos Syndrome and autism. Leaning into his love of learning, Cole earned a Master of Science degree in Psychology and found a calling in supporting neurodivergent students in higher education.
Throughout all of this, quilting remained a constant. Cole did not feel at home in traditional piecing and chose instead to trust his skills and pursue his own creative vision. That leap paid off in a big way. His quilt earned Best of Show at the International Quilt Festival in Long Beach, traveled to Houston, and later won second place for Piecing at QuiltCon. The experience was life changing and showed Cole that he could thrive in education while also creating quilts that deeply resonate with others.
Today, Cole balances teaching with quilting. He designs quilt patterns, sells kits, hosts sew alongs, and provides custom longarm services. His love for the quilting community shines through in everything he does. Visit www.colesquilts.com to explore Cole’s work and learn more about Cole’s Quilts Academy. This is a powerful and inspiring conversation you will not want to miss.

Meet Charles Cameron of Felt Like Sweets! - Ep. 189
02 Feb 2026
01:03:55
This week on Not Your Granny’s Quilt Show, my guest is Charles Cameron of Felt Like Sweets. If you know him, you know his work. Charles creates striking, expressive quilts and shares his thoughtful approach to improv quilting through workshops and lectures with guilds and quilters around the world. Charles began quilting about seven years ago after discovering the work of Pie Lady Quilts. Her improv style struck a chord, so he ordered some fabric and jumped in with a stack of fat quarters and a prayer. By reverse engineering the styles that inspired him online, Charles developed his own improv methods, began designing patterns, and never looked back. Since his first quilt, Charles’s work has been featured in Quilt Folk Magazine, QuiltCon Magazine, Curated Quilts, and more. His quilts are currently on display at the National Quilt Museum through March 24, 2026, and he will also be teaching a workshop March 12 through 14, so be sure to grab your spot. Charles’s curiosity and willingness to dive in and figure things out have inspired quilters everywhere to think outside the box, explore new ideas, and trust the skills they already have. This is an energizing and encouraging conversation you will not want to miss.

Meet Tori McElwain of Hey Tori Tech & Quilting on the Side Podcast! - Ep. 188
26 Jan 2026
01:12:07
This week on Not Your Granny’s Quilt Show, I’m joined by Tori McElwain, author of Workshops Unleashed, host of the podcast Quilting on the Side, guide for the Self-Publishing Incubator, and a passionate supporter of creative entrepreneurs.
Tori learned to quilt as a young girl and has carried it with her through every season of life... college, teaching, motherhood, and multiple moves tied to her husband’s military career. Quilting has always been her constant, even as her life and priorities shifted.
When she realized that commission quilting wasn’t sustainable alongside life as a mom of two young kids, Tori made a smart pivot. She combined her deep sewing knowledge with her background in education to create tools that help makers design better workshops, teach with confidence, and build businesses that actually fit their lives.
Today, Tori offers an incredible suite of resources that empower creatives to share what they know without burning out. If you’ve ever dreamed of teaching, publishing, or growing your creative work in a sustainable way, this conversation is for you.

Meet Matt Wilding! - Ep. 185
05 Jan 2026
01:29:49
This week on Not Your Granny's Quilt Show, we welcome in the New Year with Matt Wilding! Matt is a quilt pattern designer and all around creative guy. While being sculpture studies major at university, Matt found a connection to sourdough bread and sculpture that helped him finish his studies. The sourdough saga continued for him when he started baking for neighbors and friends during the lockdowns in 2020. While healing from a serious back injury, Matt had to find a new path that didn't have quite the same physical demand as baking. Matt turned to sewing, and produced an incredible peice called "Wings of Pride". Matt's wings won in the Quilt Creations category at Festival of Quilts in Birmingham, UK. The magnificent wingspan features precision piecing and details that stop people in their tracks. Matt has since designed and produced the pattern for a fun 3D bag pattern called Tessellated Heart. The pattern is now available on his website and you can find so many fun hacks to the pattern on his instagram! Matt will be teaching a workshop for his through Crafty Monkies, so check that out! Please enjoy Matt Wilding.

This week on Not Your Granny’s Quilt Show, I’m thrilled to welcome Bianca Springer, the creative force behind Thanks I Made Them. Sew Can You. (@thanksimadethem). Bianca has an incredible eye for transforming second-hand clothing and quilts into bold, unforgettable garments that celebrate creativity, sustainability, and skill. She’s especially known for her striking dresses made from yoyos and discarded quilt tops, breathing new life into materials with history and heart. While Bianca is deeply passionate about upcycling, she’s equally committed to teaching sewing skills so others can make, mend, and care for their own clothes with confidence. Bianca has taught workshops across the community and has even more planned in the year ahead. She’ll be teaching at QuiltCon 2026, where she’ll also have a quilt hanging in the show, and in July 2026 she’ll be leading workshops at the Estelle Center for Creative Arts. For nearly five years, Bianca wrote and drafted bag patterns for Sew News. Now she’s reclaiming ownership of those designs and re-releasing them under her own brand. Meet Russell Barratt | Textile Collage and Quilt Artist - Ep. 182
15 Dec 2025
01:26:04
This week on Not Your Granny’s Quilt Show, I’m joined by the incredibly talented UK quilt and textile collage artist Russell James Barratt. Born in Scotland and now based in London, Russell has spent the last two decades immersed in the world of fashion, costuming, and garment conceptual design. Textiles are in his DNA. His mother and grandmother both ran small sewing and knitting businesses, surrounding Russell with fibers, fabrics, and creativity from the start. His passion for upcycling and reimagining pre-loved clothing eventually led him to a professional career in fashion, where his bold, repurposed garments caught attention everywhere he went. Today, Russell brings that same sense of play, texture, and innovation to his quilting and textile collage work. Meet Joshua Dunn of Lifting and Stitching! - Ep. 181
08 Dec 2025
01:08:39
This week on Not Your Granny’s Quilt Show, I’m so excited to finally sit down with Joshua Dunn of Lifting and Stitching, a maker who blends strength, science, and stitching in the coolest way possible. Joshua and I have spent plenty of time chatting behind the scenes, bonding over vegan food, lifting weights, and all the unexpected ways our creative lives overlap. His quilting inspiration often comes from the universe itself, using stunning images of space to spark bold, movement-filled designs. His quilt Red Giant, which hung at QuiltCon 2025, is just one jaw-dropping example of his cosmic creativity. Joshua also shares an exciting project for this year’s Quiltmas Spectacular quilt-along, where he’s one of the featured block designers! His candy cane–inspired block is rooted in a sweet childhood memory of hanging candy canes on the Christmas tree with his family, sentimental and festive all at once. With even more exciting projects on the horizon and inspiration that truly reaches beyond our home planet, Joshua is a maker you’ll definitely want to keep an eye on. Check out his brand new website at www.liftingandstitching.com and follow along on Instagram at @liftingandstitching and enjoy our chat!

Meet Sarah Ruth of Ruthlessly Handmade! - Ep. 180
01 Dec 2025
01:15:42
This week I’m joined by Sarah Ruth Morris of Ruthlessly Handmade. Education researcher, quilter, and mother of two boys in Texas. Sarah’s quilts are stitched with purpose: each one is part of her ongoing practice of learning to love more deeply. Through quilt fundraisers, she has rallied makers and supporters to uplift children in need. She raised funds for Isaiah 117 House in the fall and beginning a new fundraiser benefiting The Trevor Project in spring 2026. Sarah’s heart for care and community runs through everything she creates. In recent years, quilting has also become a space for Sarah to process and express her evolving spirituality. Her art-driven quilts explore the tender, complicated emotions of deconstructing old beliefs, imagery that has resonated powerfully with many survivors who see themselves reflected in her work.
You can explore Sarah’s quilts and learn how to support upcoming fundraisers at ruthlesslyhandmade.com or follow her at @ruthlesslyhandmade on Instagram. Please enjoy this conversation!

This week on Not Your Granny’s Quilt Show, I’m honored to sit down with Hillary Goodwin (@entropyalwayswins) , the featured artist for QuiltCon 2026 and a creator whose work moves, breathes, and tells stories in every stitch. 🧵✨ Hillary is an ER doctor, and quilting has become her refuge, a place where things can be imperfect, messy, emotional, and real. Her quilts capture that energy. Her style is full of play, motion, and meaning, honoring the long lineage of quilting tradition while boldly pushing into modern expression. It’s no surprise the MQG selected Hillary as this year’s featured artist. Her body of work isn’t just visually striking, it’s deeply human. When you spend days upon days with a single piece, how could it not absorb pieces of your life, your emotions, and your story? Check out Hillary’s stunning work at entropyalwayswinsblog.com while you listen, and enjoy this beautiful conversation about art, healing, and making things that matter.

Meet Lina & Laura of Quilting With Latinas! - Ep. 177
10 Nov 2025
01:30:19
This week on Not Your Granny’s Quilt Show, I’m joined by Laura Raquel Duran and Lina Owen of Quilting With Latinas, two passionate makers who are bringing bilingual resources and cultural connection to the quilting community! Laura and Lina are the co-authors of Learn-to-Quilt: Bilingual Guide Book, a first-of-its-kind quilting resource written in both English and Spanish. After realizing how few Spanish-language materials were available, they teamed up to create a guide that’s not only educational but also celebrates their cultural roots with stories and inspiration woven throughout. Their mission to make quilting more accessible has even caught the attention of big names like Moda, Riley Blake, Bernina, and Art Gallery Fabrics, who are working with them to expand language accessibility in quilting patterns and content. Check out their beautiful tutorials and vibrant community on Instagram and YouTube at @quiltingwithlatinas , and grab a copy of Learn-to-Quilt: Bilingual Guide Book to support their incredible work! ✨

Meet John MacPhail of Art East Quilting Co.! - Ep. 175
27 Oct 2025
01:30:42
This week on Not Your Granny’s Quilt Show, I’m joined by John MacPhail of Art East Quilting Company, the creative mind behind some of the quilting world’s most charming and imaginative patterns. 🧵 John’s journey into quilting began back in university while studying Costume Design, though it took a decade (and a little help from Instagram and YouTube!) for him to rediscover his love of the craft. Within six months of making his first quilt, quilting became his full-time passion. From whimsical goats and Halloween wiener dogs to literary-inspired designs, John’s patterns celebrate joy, humor, and storytelling through fabric. His recent Anne of Green Gables collaboration with the Anne of Green Gables Society and Riley Blake brought a beloved literary icon to life in quilt form. A true creative milestone! Looking ahead, John and his team have plenty of fun projects in store, including a 2026 Sew-Along hosted by Adam Burch for Sew Place Like Home, newly reimagined for Tula Pink’s Graywork collection. Follow all the creativity and upcoming releases at www.arteastquiltingco.com and on Instagram at @arteastquiltingco

Meet Kaye Collins of Oh Kaye Quilting, The Lazy Quilters Club & HandiQuilter ! - Ep. 172
13 Oct 2025
01:06:44
This week on Not Your Granny’s Quilt Show my guest is Kaye Collins of Oh Kaye Quilting, The Lazy Quilters Club, and HandiQuilter. Kaye spent years as a high school band teacher before retiring and leaning fully into her quilting practice. A member of the Salt Lake City Modern Quilt Guild, Kaye had a fateful (and masked!) meeting during Covid with HandiQuilter’s Kim Sandberg, which opened the door for her to become a HandiQuilter educator. Now she travels across the country teaching quilters of all levels how to make the most of their machines. Kaye also founded The Lazy Quilters Club, where she shares her love for making sewing and quilting easier and more enjoyable. As she jokes, “quilters aren’t lazy...they’re some of the most innovative, creative people you’ll ever meet!” Her mantra is simple but powerful: have fun and relax! Quilting shouldn’t stress you out. Check out her work at ohkayequilting.com or find her tips and tricks on Instagram @thelazyquiltersclub Please enjoy Kaye Collins!
